First attempt at book binding my own fic, Solar Lunacy; ARC 1, Chapters 1-13. Aprox 185,343 wordcount, newer chapters not included.
I messed up and made the font size and margins smaller than the average book, so doing the actaul book will be thicker, but I had to squish the current signature sizes into this hardcover I yanked and upcycled from the thrift store. I used fabrics that I had lying around from making my Sun & Moon cosplays.
It's not perfect but it's good for a test bind! Now to actually fix the text block and make a decent hardcover. Eventually.

Today I finally finished the fanbinding project I started back in October 😅
This is a fanbind of Atlas, my favorite ever Spirk fanfiction and a loving portrait of the mote of sunlight that is AOS Jim Kirk. This fic was written by @distractedkat and can be read on AO3 (Tumblr isn’t letting me add a link on mobile.)
The text block was kettle-stitched and typeset completely from scratch in Word, and the dust jacket was designed in Canva Pro. I realized I forgot to take a picture without the dust jacket, but it’s cloth bound in a navy linen bookcloth from Amazon.
I’m really proud of how tightly this bind came out compared to my wonky first attempt! Now my partner and I can reread this amazing story in physical format for years to come 🥰

My first REALLY tiny book, a bind of Four of Swords. A sextodecimo! This lil guy is about 3" x 2 1/4" and is bound with actual cards from the miniature edition RWS deck. Because of the fun tarot imagery I'd been wanting to bind this one, but it's so short, just about 5000 words, so it had to go really little :3
Printed on pop-tone white from French, spine and sword detail done with HTV. I printed the main narrative in black and the flashbacks in blue, for visual separation, and the endpapers are of artwork done for this fic by the incredible @sandwichartistdatzu !!

So I got in to bookbinding a few months ago and finally made a collection of all my batjokes stories. Since money is tight I told myself to stick to only supplies I already owned, so while these wouldn’t be my first choice of endpapers for this material, I still think the skulls are cute. The cover art was hand foiled with a foil quill pen and took a little under 3.5 hours.
Huge shoutout to everyone in the Renegade server for lending me their opinions and advice while I designed this little chonker 🙏🏻💜

The meaning of mistletoe by Endrina, first volume of The secret language of plants. @llendrinall I have read this charming story several times. The voice of the narration, with its fairy tale reminiscence, is something I really like. Endrina is a great author, it is worth reading their novel length fics.
Typeset by Lindsey P. For those inexperienced in fandom, this story can be read for free at AO3.
What I like:
It's quite a simple binding, but something in it remind me of the old editions of my childhood. Reading it give me a special kind of joy, it's both, the comfort of this story and the childhood-like feeling this tome brings me while holding it
What I could do better:
I had problems with the guillotining of the edges, but went ahead [I had already lost a lot of material with a failed first printing]. I couldn't say what happened, but - for me - that mistake gives a Je ne sais quoi to the edition that I love. I don't know why, but when I was a child, back in the 70's, I had many books with the same feeling. The paper was a bit thicker than usual, and the edges weren't perfectly cut. I didn't realize, until I sat down to read this edition, that this binding conjures up memories of my childhood.
Special thanks: During the process, I had a severe case of printer hiccups (Or binder's brain hiccups, to be more precise) but @getfuckedblr hold my hand and helped me.
@llendrinall
[If I learned to bind, you can do it too. It's not that difficult... ok a little at first, but it is doable. Don't buy fic binds, ok? It spoils fandom's fun]

so i completed my first ever fan binding, everything from start to finish - barring writing the fic myself - and i wanted to share the results!!
the fic is the certain things we lack by @deanpendragon on ao3 (it’s an incredible fic, if you haven’t read it already, you really really really should!!)
if anyone wants to bind their own copy using the typeset i made, i’ve put a fully formatted and print-ready pdf along with some instructions for how to go about fan binding (and links to people who can explain the process better than i can) on my google drive!

So I’ve heard that printing off fanfic (with the intention to book bind it) using online services like Barnes & Noble or Lulu is unethical and potentially illegal (?) and that any service that makes a profit from you printing is the same (I.e. staples). However, my local library offers printing services—you do have to pay, though. I’m unsure if they make a profit, but considering it’s a public library, I kind of doubt it.
Can anyone tell me if using their services to print fanfic (for fanbinding) is ethical/legal? I couldn’t find any info online, and I really wanna get into fanbinding but my home printer doesn’t do double-sided printing, which is kinda necessary for book-printing.

Binding My Own Fanfiction // art upgrade
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some of you might remember my fanfiction bind and the temporary dustjacket I made, but my commission finally came in!
This was also supposed to be my submission for @tamlinweek Day 7 - Free day!
Read the fic on AO3.
Thank you @snaxk for the amazing, amazing cover!
I couldn't be happier; it's everything I wanted and more 🥹🥹🥹
I also want to thank @lucychanart and @deemsum for letting me use their art as inserts!
Your art was just so perfect for some of the key chapters in the fic!
A couple of notes for those interested in the process:
The title is actually gold, but it's hard to capture the gorgeous sheen on photo -- his eyes and earrings also are gold
I was having major, major issues with my gold pen. You can see a bit of the splatter -- this was my 2nd attempt printing. I didn't want to waste ink, paper and paint as I am binding a second copy for my best friend -- she is my beta reader, my editor and my first fan. Thoughts & prayers that my materials will AGREE with me!
I can't afford fancy dustjacket paper right now, but I did want to seal the art/gold paint. The texture you see on the photo is actually from matte-drying glue. I actually enjoy the texture a lot!!
Already that I am a chaotic crafter, I also injured myself and got blood on my materials RIP so be careful out there ya'll
The paper I used for the inserts are vellum, they are not currently glued, but I will do it for my second version.

I fell in love with the fic Liquid Gold by @sodiumazideandothertoxins (with art by many talented artists) and I kept rereading it, it's a gentle fic with the ineffables (human au) falling in love. I wanted to have a paperback copy and so it was my first personal bind. I reached out to Sodium and I also got to bind a copy for them and compiled it with a few of their shorter fics too, I highly recommend all of them!! I loved the process of choosing the style of the cover, the collaboration with them to create this book and sending it off in the mail. Thank you for this opportunity.
(also thanks for supplying the photos SodiumAzide cause I forgot to take any before sending it off)

An au fic that is near and dear to my heart, and one that spawned hundreds of thousands of words of follow-up, companion pieces, aus, and so on. AKA the one where I fixed canon by turning a major character into a zombie.
Lot of firsts on this bind -- first time using a guillotine for the edges, first time including a bookmark, and first time using heat transfer vinyl, for the lettering and bloodstains on the cover. For a first attempt, not awful; the letters came out a little raggedy but I decided to just roll with it since this is, thematically, supposed to be a bloodied and ratty relic of an apocalypse. And I FUCKING LOVE how the blood splattered page edges turned out.
Technical details under the cut.
Body text is Kozuka Mincho Pro R on French fleece white parchtone; titles are Haettenschweiler; chapter headers are Traveling Typewriter; chapter caps and Tshirt text are You Murderer BB. Blood splatters from a font called simply "splatter".
End papers are some kind of scrapbook paper from a "blood splatter" pack I found online somewhere. Bookcloth is generic BbH. Vinyl is Siser Metal HTV, cut with cricut, that I jacked up by using an iron instead of a proper heat press. Edge splatter with mix of liquitex naphol red light and FW Pearlescent black acrylic inks.
I think that's everything. Most ambitious bind I've done and one of the ones I'm happiest with in terms of overall presentation.

A Leap of Faith by Misery_C_Epicaricacy & Ynnéalay
Merlin confesses his magic, upending the trust between him and Arthur; when he goes missing from Camelot, a conflicted Arthur must reckon with his fears and prejudices as Merlin’s life is put at stake.

Fanbinding of A Leap of Faith. Process, commentary, and additional pictures under the cut ♥
First of all, thank you to all the lovely folks from the @renegadepublishing discord for enthusiastically encouraging me to fanbind my own work, though this is not entirely just-mine. This fic was co-written with the awe-inspiring @whoawhataconcept (Misery_C_Epicaricacy on AO3) and this binding is as much a love letter to her writing, her mind, and our creative collaboration as it is to my own contributions.
On: Textblock & Typesetting
I've bound a couple fics at this point, but was saving Garamond for this one because I fell in love with how these particular words look set in Garamond. The headings are done in a simplistic all-caps Calibri with expanded spacing to pay homage to how many hours editing this damn thing were spent looking at the font in question. I've also used font 'Merlin' for the front title page—which I got linked out of the @merlinbingo discord server—and Felix Titling for the interior title page.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The body is printed on EarthChoice colour cream paper, and stitched with red crochet thread.
On: Endpapers
The endpapers were a tricky one for me! They are prints of my own fanart which was not the correct aspect ratio to use as endpapers for a book printed on letter paper. This was also the first large map I created, and if I could go back, there are things I would do differently. But in the end, I decided to use it as-is because I'm proud of it. To fix the sizing issue, I up-sized the map so the width was correct for a letter-sized print, which left a border on the top and bottom of the image—this I filled in with black and red checkerboard pattern to match the banners and standards of Camelot.
Tumblr media
Originally, I wanted it printed on this textured, pearl-finish linen paper, but then the print shop I use didn't have it in a large enough size to do endpapers on and I was heartbroken. I ended up using topkote gloss paper by Oji.
On: Endbands
Hand-sewn in red and gold crochet thread. I redid these like three times to find a core I liked, and ended up doing them over tightly rolled paper.
The Dust Jacket
Tumblr media
I'm not a graphic designer, so the jacket design is simplistic. It includes a cover, back cover (with a 'praise for' section), and two inside flaps (which contain the fic summary and author bios). I took some cues from this dust jacket post. It's printed on a thicker weight of topkote paper by Oji, this time with a dull finish.
Closing Thoughts
I'm so proud of how this turned out! It's my best work yet in terms of straight-ness of the spine/cover paper, and I learned a lot about printing. Lots of firsts for me here, and I feel that every time I make a book, I improve. I've gifted this copy to my co-author, Misery. Seeing her flip through it, and seeing it on our shelf, is giving me a lot of joy today!

I am obsessed, in awe, humbled, honored, and feeling many other emotions over @serpentsnestpress gorgeous bookbinding of my fic Becoming His Mobius.
The cover! The font! The front and back inside covers being orange and green! The TVA and Loki series vibes are immaculate. It is perfect.
The attention to detail is stunning. My brain is still on overload seeing my fic in the physical form.
(I am also again laughing at how what I intended to be a “one-shot fanfic of my own fanfic” clocks in at 300 pages 😅)
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Easily one of my most treasured possessions.

I loved Here's looking at you kid when I read it, especially how the inner life of each character is developed. So when I finished reading it, I knew I had to bind it sooner or later. Seeing the fantastic job @chaoticbindery did encourage me even more. What I love: Not to mention the beautiful typesetting of @chaoticbindery I'm also happy with the monogram that includes Blaise and George's names.
What I learned: It's the first time I've done a larger, more complex design on HTV.
What I need to improve: I have to be careful not to overheat the cover: I noticed the letter H was crooked, that happened because when it was ready, I realized that not everything had transferred well, and I applied heat again, but I wasn't very careful.
Still, I like this one.
