Side Dishes in Korea
Why do we get served so many each meal?
1. Background Information
Tumblr media
One of the most appealing things about eating out in Korea is the unlimited free refill on the side dishes, known as banchan.
This practice is deeply rooted in Korean history and character as a nation
2. Kimchi
Tumblr media
There are hundreds of different types of kimchi, but the signature cabbage banchan is offered at pretty much every restaurant.
Koreans have for generations been storing vegetables in pots to ferment so that they will have food available for the winter.
3. Common Banchans
Tumblr media
Other than kimchi, there are bean sprouts, cucumber vegetables, and sesame leaves pickled in soy sauce.
Some of the more luxurious Korean restaurant sever egg rolls, tteokbooki, and ganjang gejang.
4. Banchans At Restaurant
Tumblr media
Eating at a Korean restaurant is always an exercise in how to maneuver all the dishes to actually fit on the table.
It is not uncommon to receive 3 or more different banchan dishes alongside the main course that you order.
5. Homemade Banchans
Tumblr media
During a kimchi-preparation event called kimjang, a large amout of kimchi is laid out for all members of the family work on.
This practice is less common these days, but parents still like to prepare kimchi and distribute it to their children as a show of affection.
6. Why Are Banchan Unlimited?
Tumblr media
One reason is that white rice was much more expensive than kimchi and banchan during difficult times in the Korean economy.
It was too expensive for restaurants to give refills of rice, but in order to make sure you were full, they offered you a second helping of banchan.
7. How Is Banchan Served?
Tumblr media
In order to reduce operating costs, some restaurants have suggested limiting or removing the unlimited banchan options, which many Korean people weren’t happy about.
To meet in the middle, many Korean restaurants these days have adopted a self-service system in which you can eat as much as you like, but you have to approach the food station and fill your own bowls.

Let's check out some best Korean traditional food
Kimchi: The Heart and Soul of Korean Cuisine
It would be impossible to discuss Korean cuisine without discussing kimchi. This traditional Korean food has a history extending back more than 2,000 years to the Shilla Dynasty. People usually use cabbage or radishes for kimchi. All the ingredients are usually seasoned with salt, chili pepper flakes, garlic, ginger, and other herbs and spices. The end result is a dish that Koreans adore with every meal because it is sour, hot, and pungent. Due to its probiotic nature, kimchi is not only delicious but also has several health advantages.
Korean Fried Chicken: The Crispy Delight of Traditional Korean Food
Korean fried chicken recreates the classic American fast food in its own special way. Unlike its American equivalents, double-fry the chicken in vegetable oil before covering it in a sweet-spicy sauce. As a result, the inside of the meat is extremely moist. And the lightly battered skin is crispy and low in fat. Korean Fried Chicken is a famous late-night treat with beer.
Tteokbokki- Red Rice Cakes
Tteokbokki is a beloved traditional Korean food that has become a popular street food dish across the country. It features chewy rice cakes, known as tteok, cooked in a spicy sauce, creating a flavorful and satisfying meal. Tteokbokki is known for its unique combination of heat, sweetness, and umami flavors.

How to find a real restaurant I use! (feat. Google Maps)
Hello. I usually go on a trip spontaneously. Once, I decided on a date with my friend, and I decided where to go, so I remember going to Pohang by train to Daejeon Hahaha I go on a trip on the spot like this, and even if I decide where to go, I don't plan what to eat. Still, it was very rare to fail with food every time I went on a trip. These days, it's hard to find a really good restaurant because it's surrounded by advertisements and posts. My friends are still trying to find good restaurants on NAVER, so I'm going to share my tips! I usually find it through two methods. 1. Local tastes 2. Google Map Rating Consider two degrees. 1. Local tastes Of course, the restaurant recognized by locals is likely to be a good restaurant. But the problem is that I don't know any locals. So when I get in a taxi, I ask the driver... I used to ask the passers-by. (A method that I used a lot when I was 20 years old) But it's a way to use it when there's a person... There's also the pressure of talking to strangers. So I've been using the second method, Google Maps Ratings, more recently. 2. Google Map Rating If you go into Google Maps, there's a restaurant category. If you click on the restaurant category above, you can see the ratings of the nearby restaurants. Naver and Kakao map also have ratings, but.. NAVER has so many ratings for advertising and buying. (Grade Management) You can find out by searching the reviewer <<. There are advertisers who write receipt reviews or good reviews where they have never been for 1,000 won. The place where the vendors work is Naver >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> So I usually use Google Maps. I recommend that you try it on, too! I'm writing reviews to help others Haha Usually, I write down if it's really good, so the four places up there - Hyeonpung Chicken Kalguksu, Seongju Pork and Rice Soup, Golden Gopchang Makchang, and Hongriseong - were all very satisfied. More than 50 people have left reviews on my travel tips: price, service and quantity are likely to be satisfactory More than 1,000 people left reviews, which are in the late 3rd to early 4th points. Famous local restaurant, likely to eat in line. It's like this. You'll know how it feels when you try it on. 50 to 100 people used it, but a restaurant with more than 4.5 is really... It's not common. I'm sure there's a reason, so if you're around, stop by. There are very few companies that manage Google View. (If you look at the reviews, you can see these three years ago, two years ago. So, the price is often different after looking at the menu picture, so I recommend you to check the latest price on Naver after looking at the rating on Google Maps.) That was the way to find good restaurants that I use. The most memorable restaurant I've ever visited... A chef who was cooking in Tokyo came and opened a coffee shop. The curry made by the chef was so delicious that I went to the restaurant 2 hours away by word of mouth. Jjajangmyeon that I ate in Gyeongju and jjamppongtang that I ate in Daejeon. When snow crabs were sold for 100,000 won per kilo in Pohang, a small store in front of the elementary school made Mori noodle restaurant with red crabs, other clams, and seafood. Even thinking about it now, I remember finding and eating delicious restaurants all over the country well. There's a lot more than that's I'll have to post some good restaurants that left an impression on me. Check out what good restaurants there are around you! If there's a restaurant that proves that it's a local restaurant, please write it down I'll visit you later!

4. Pufferfish Soup
Tumblr media
Pufferfish has to be prepared only by licensed chefs who have received intense training to eliminate the toxin from the fish. Most restaurants offer this soup in spicy and non-spicy version. Usually, the non-spicy version is preferred for those seeking to chase their hangovers. This dish is especially popular in Busan.
5. Pork Spine Soup

This is a rich and spicy pork soup with meaty chunks of pork spine. Another name for this dish is gamjatang. This dish is a specialty in Gyeongsangnamdo Province. It is a clear soup made by boiling golden freshwater clams and simply seasoned with salt. Alothough the clams are small in size compared to other clam species but they are just as sweet and release lots of flavors to the broth.
