The crispy pork knuckle (Schweinshaxe) is the first main dish I think of when I want German food. In Bangkok there are those ones served at faux German beer halls that doesn’t pass the mustard then there was this classic plate at long-established Bei Otto. This was a very nice, thick leg piece with superb crackling skin. And that’s the secret of this favorite dish. Many restaurants fall face down when it comes to the skin but Bei Otto aced it with the meat still tender and juicy. Served with two balls of mashed potatoes and a great gravy, with a canal view near my office, no less. A must-have food at one of the oldest standalone European restaurants in the city. The sad part of this story is the restaurant has closed down. Google Map says it’s a temporary closure but from the junk and stuff left on the premises when I tried to pay a return visit, you’d think it was a permanent thing. Don’t know if it’s a victim of relocation to an obscure, blink-and-miss-it location or COVID-19, but another one bites the dust. Ham and Cranberry Sliders #SliderSunday —inspiration by @ninjacue What a tasty way to use some of those leftovers! Cranberry sauce, slices of ham, provolone (I used what I had, which was shredded provolone /mozzarella) and some brown sugar butter brushed over the tops. These were perfectly toasted in a 350° oven for 15 minutes until the cheese was melted and gooey.
