I finally published the project for my dice roll scarf that went viral last month. If you love dice games, you'll enjoy knitting this pattern.
Tumblr media
The color work in this project is determined by an algorithm, a set of rules that determine the final outcome. There isn't an exact set of instructions for this project. Instead, the knitter uses four 10-sided dice or a random number generator to pick the length of the colorwork in each row.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The result is a staggered stripe sequence along the edge of the shawl. There are trillions of unique outcomes, so no two projects turn out exactly alike. The pattern uses about 500 yards of yarn in total, but the amount of each color that you'll need is randomly determined. Before publishing, I wanted to find out the minimum and maximum amount of each color required to make the project and the probability of each outcome.
Tumblr media
The knowledge needed to calculate the yardage was a bit beyond my skill level, but my friend Mary W. Martin helped me gather this info. I used an online probability calculator to find out the probability of each unique stitch count. The results are slightly different depending on whether you use four 10-sided dice (blue) or pick a random number (yellow), but 99% of all possible results fall within a very small range.
Tumblr media
It was an interesting little tangent, but not hugely important to the actual knitting pattern. I can, however, confidently say there is a >99.9% chance that you'll need a 2nd skein of the main color. If you want to know more about the math, you should check out my project notes on Ravelry.
The thick and thin striped colorwork is created with a super simple "long stitch" technique. The pattern looks great in fluffy mohair or contrasting colors of basic wool and the instructions include some basic tips for substituting yarns or changing the gauge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finished Size: 18 x 68” (46 x 172 cm) rectangular wrap.
Yarn: Approx. 315 yards (288 m) of MC and approx. 264 yards (241 m) of CC. Yardage may vary, see notes on yardage below and yardage chart in photos.
• Main Color (2 skeins) - JMR Studio Worsted Weight Mohair, 245 yards (225 m) per 4 oz; 78% Mohair, 13% Wool, 9% Nylon.
• Contrast Color (1 skein each, both yarns held together) - JMR Studio Fingering Weight Mohair, 320 yards (293 m) per 100g; 63% Silk, 23% Kid Mohair, 11% Nylon, 3% Polyester Held with Lavender Lune Yarn Co. Suri Alpaca, 328 yards (300 m) per 50g; 74% Suri Alpaca, 26% Silk.
Yardage: The amount of each color used for this pattern fluctuates based on the random numbers used to determine the stitch pattern. MC uses approx. 233 to 315 yards (213 to 288m) and CC uses approx. 182 to 264 yards (166 to 241m). 99% of possible results fall within a much smaller range. The Yardage Chart shows the distribution of all potential yardage outcomes.
Needles: Size 8 (5 mm) straight needles, or size needed to obtain gauge. NOTE: Straight needles work best with long stitches. Circular needles with a thin cord allow the long stitches to tighten and stretch, making them harder to manipulate.
Gauge: 12 sts x 14 rows = 4 x 4” (10 x 10 cm) square in pattern.
Other Materials: 10 sided die or random number generator, stitch marker, scale, tapestry needle.
Generating numbers: In my sample, I used four ten-sided dice (D10) to choose a number between 4 and 40 sts. If you don't have dice, you can use an online app like RANDOM.org to generate your numbers. If you follow this link, you'll get a list of 63 integers between 4 and 40. NOTE: Each time you visit the link or refresh the page, the list changes. You can also just choose numbers as you knit.
Pattern is available on my website and on Ravelry.

JJK Drabble #2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tw/Warnings: Fem!Reader, Fluff, Fluff Brainrot, Domesticity, Family Man Toji, Usage of Wife and Mom, JJK Oc added
Pairing: Toji Fushiguro x Fem!Reader
Reader: Female, Usage of Wife and Mom
AU: Modern/"Toji Lives" Au
(A/N): I'm back! Well, kinda of. Long story short, dealt w/college stuff and had a health scare that kept me away from writing. Also had a mini burnout too. More is explained here!
Tumblr media
Thinking about Toji taking up crocheting and knitting because he saw how expensive yet cheaply made certain items like blankets are made. So he buys a simple set to try it out, following Youtube tutorials and watching videos for ideas. Once he masters the basics, Toji is LOCKED IN once again. Making full on hand-made blankets, scarves, hats, mittens/gloves, stuffed animals, covers/cases, bags, scrunchies, even damn rugs. Anything you ask him for, he’ll make it. This ends up being very practical to Toji because he saves so much money by just making them at home himself. It has to be the premium, natural, good quality type. Organic cotton, wool, cashmere, alpaca/llamas, silk, linen, mohair, bamboo, hemp, all of that. Tell him about polyester or something and he tells you to put that shit back. He buys the premium yarn nearby, locally, or gets them imported internationally. Gets every and any colors because he never wants to be limited when making his projects.
There was a throw blanket you wanted for the couch but it was expensive and the size was a lot smaller than you hoped. The next day, you come home to see Toji making it for you. The same color but better quality and inexpensive, and it was the size you wanted too. You were happy and amazed that he made it within a day. Living off your praise and approval, Toji just makes everything. Since he can’t get carpal tunnel or arthritis, his hands and wrists never get tired from working. Though, his posture does get bad and his back aches from being hunched over. The blanket in your bedroom with Toji? He made that shit with fucking love and care. He actually made multiple ones depending on the weather and season.
Man has even made throw pillows, regular pillows, water bottle cases, table cloths, coasters, bags, cushions, and made your own curtains. I mentioned before that everything in your home was either made, customized, or renovated by Toji. This stays TRUE because almost all the pillows and blankets in the house are his creation. The blankets and pillows that cover Megumi and Tsumiki’s beds? All Toji. Both pillows and blankets match each other and are in respective colors for the two. Megumi has one at his dorm because it gets cold over there and he hates sleeping in the cold.
If you are a stuffed animal fiend, like me, you ask Toji to make you any stuffed animal you want. Definitely make squishmallow dupes for you if you asked him. In your personal room/office, there’s a pile of stuffed animals in the corner from Toji that you pluck one from the pile and hold it while relaxing or walking around the house. The ones he loves to make are bees, dragons, whales, dolphins and dogs. And they’re so soft and huggable, you squeeze them all the time. Toji just grins to himself knowing the things he makes brings you and the kids happiness.
Toji “Anything my wife wants, my wife gets. No questions asked” Fushiguro
It’s normal for you to come home to see Toji crocheting/knitting away at something. You either find him in three places at home: the engawa in front of the courtyard and garden, the family room with the shoji doors open, or in his personal room/office. Mostly, he sits outside sitting on the engawa working away at something. It makes him work better, or so he says. Makes his own needles and hooks because of his big hands. Megumi still has his crocheted stuffed puppy when he was younger, still going strong even though it’s been worn down from love. Tsumiki has all the Sanrio characters knitted/crocheted as gifts from Toji.
Tsumiki always wears her hair up in a ponytail, Toji makes her scrunchies in her favorite designs and colors. Her favorite cardigans and pullover sweaters that keep her warm during fall and winter were made by Toji because he wanted to try making outerwear. Luckily it worked in his favor. Tsumiki asked Toji if he could make her a tote bag because she needed a bag for outings. She comes home from school one day to see three of them in different sizes. She has those cute little flower keychains on her school bag and outing bags too because she asked Papa Toji for them. The massive white and blue circle rug in her room is from Toji.
Megumi’s winter scarf, earmuffs, and hat are made by Toji too. Megumi will never admit it out loud but he appreciates that Toji made it for him. They keep him and he doesn’t feel the wind chills nipping at his face. Megumi also appreciates his dad for making his stuffed animals. I’m projecting here but Toji made a set of plush stuffed animals after his shadows. His divine dogs, all of them. Megumi keeps them on his stuffed animal net in the top corner above his bed. Megumi wears a jacket and hoodie made by Toji all year round because of how versatile they are. In general, they’re Megumi’s favorite clothes to wear too.
Thinking about asking Toji to make a present for Nobara and Yuuji on their birthdays. You asked Nobara what her favorite color and style was while Yuuji said he wanted a new hoodie. Toji makes them pretty fast and the two are in love with their gifts. Nobara is wearing her bag EVERYWHERE, and I mean, EVERYWHERE she goes. Yuuji, like Megumi, ends up loving his hoodie that you always see him wear when he’s in casual clothes. Since Nanako and Mimiko grew up with Megumi and Tsumiki, one of Nanako’s cardigans and a pair of her socks are made by Toji while Mimiko only has a random plushie Toji made for her when she was younger because Suguru had to clean the other one.
Not me thinking about how Tsumiki, Megumi, and Mayumi(JJK OC) baby blankets are handmade by Toji himself with their own individual design and patterns. Megumi and Tsumiki’s are still in good condition even though they were lovingly used by the two throughout their whole life. Their baby hats, socks, and certain outfits were all made by him. He keeps them all in individual boxes to not lose them. Gets sentimental and nostalgic that you catch him staring as he holds the small clothes in his big hands. Reminiscing about Megumi and Tsumiki being babies and small children, now realizing that they are growing up before his eyes.
God, all of it is thoroughly well knitted and crocheted that people thought you bought it from a store. “No, actually my husband made it for me. Isn’t he skillful and amazing?” Your friends and co-workers lowkey ask you if Toji is willing to take commissions for them. They’ll pay for it obviously but they want good quality home-made items Toji makes which gives you an idea. You asked Toji if he considered making orders for other people besides his family. He did think about it but he said he would get overwhelmed when receiving orders and packing them up. You asked him if dealing with the orders and packaging them would help him change his mind. So you unintentionally set up a small business with Toji. His shop consists of blankets, bags and baskets of any kind, pot holders, rugs, coverings, and pillows. It runs where one week is for receiving orders, one month is for making them, and another month to send them out. Making a spreadsheet/list for Toji to show what he needs to make. Probably gets finished with all the orders in two weeks or something.
For some reason, Toji wears eye-glasses when he knits and crochets. You don’t know why but it makes him more handsome that your brain rots/short circuits every time you see him working away. He got you all flustered and down bad it’s insane(but absolutely valid). But you don’t understand why he would need them since he already has better vision and eye-sight than 99% of the population.
“Honey, since when do you need glasses?”
“I need it so I don’t strain my eyes when working on them?”
“Can you, like, squint? You already have 20/10 vision. You don’t need glasses when you have superhuman vision, Baby.”
“Doll, just because I have good eye-sight doesn’t mean my eyes aren’t as sensitive. My eyes are still bugged by light, shit hurts and gives me headaches. Anyway, can you pass me the blue yarn in front of ya?”
Megumi and Tsumiki always see you with their Toji. You’re chilling and minding your own business with their baby sister napping away while Toji is working away at a rug because he is bored. Even though he’s been doing this since they were young, the two still can’t get over how their dad can make a king-sized blanket(start to finish) in four hours. Or when they come home from school and see Toji finishing up on a big and long green dragon, turning to Megumi and Tsumiki asking them, “Do you two think your mom would like this?” Or they could be chilling then Toji asks them to try on the projects he finished to see how they look. Tsumiki and Megumi are his main critics, you are too but you aren’t bothered by certain details to criticize Toji’s projects so he leaves it to the kids.
Mayumi(JJK OC) is chilling by Toji as he’s working away, either sleeping away or playing with her stuffed animals close within sight. Being the three year old she is, she sometimes hides underneath the unfinished blankets and pops up from under to surprise Toji. Papa Toji gives his iconic DILF chuckle that has you  GEEKING and GIGGLING like a damn school girl when you get the chance to hear it every time. He just pats her head, calling her a little rascal or princess, then resumes.
I’m projecting once again but you know those cute crochet dolls? Like the ones with the big black eyes, big head, small body, and no mouth? Toji made those of the entire family. There’s one of himself in his iconic black compression shirt, white sweatpants, and kung fu slippers. He added a little scar too where his mouth would be. Then there is your’s, all pretty and pristine with your iconic outfit. Toji getting your colors and features down to the bone. Next is Megumi and Tsumiki, literal carbon copies of their real versions. Toji said Megumi’s hair was the hardest part to make lol. Then Mayumi’s doll is later added once she’s born. The mini Fushiguro Doll set sits on the top shelf of a pristine black display case, next to the tv, in the family room.
He’s the type of guy you wouldn’t expect to be good at a skill like this then later found out he’s an absolute master and god among men. Toji doesn’t parade around craftsmanship because he knows how some guys have fragile egos. But he won’t shy away when people ask him about his work. Pulls out his phone to show people the things he made with two needles, one crochet hook, and a shit load of yarn.
Satoru, being the shitter he is, tries to tease and bully Toji about it. To which you reprimand and scold him for it. But Toji doesn’t care about dealing with his antics because it’s a practical skill and keeps him out of trouble. Then you remind Satoru that his winter scarf he always wears was made, the one you gifted him for his 18th birthday, was made by Toji at your request. Satoru never wore any scarf because he thought you made it for him. But for you to tell him Toji actually made it for him, Satoru shuts himself up and doesn’t shit on Toji anymore.
Toji loves it when his family uses/wears the things that he made. Usually wears a goofy smile or grin on his face to conceal his prideful yet satisfied self, knowing his creations are appreciated and loved by his family.

2023 Knitting Projects
This was my first official year of knitting and I had so much fun learning new techniques and skills
Tumblr media
I completed a total of 8 projects (one was a christmas present so its not in this picture). It is really incredible to me that I started this year just wanting something to do while I recovered from surgery and it turned into such an important part of my life.
Tumblr media
My first project! These shorts were surprisingly easy for a first project although I definitely made some mistakes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of these are the step by step sweater by Florence Miller. For the gray sweater I used some cable patterns from the Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible by Hitomi Shida.
Tumblr media
The Salty Days Sweater by Kutovakika (I wear this one all the time!)
Tumblr media
The Skeleton Top by Betty Maeva (with a lace panel from the Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible by Hitomi Shida)
Tumblr media
Two different Sophie Scarf by Petiteknit (the one of the left is alpaca and silk and the one on the right is wool).
Tumblr media
And finally the Columns of Valhalla Pillow by Drops Design which was knit as a christmas gift for my sibling's spouse. For some reason it looks gray in this picture (probably because I finished it late on Christmas Eve lol) but it is a denim blue color.
I really had a fun year of knitting and I already have so many future knits planned

OK full hat collection because I love my hats since they are almost all gifts. you get a long post about my hats because it's MY blog, after all. I feel like I'm still missing one or two, but this is at least my regular rotation.
top (left to right):
very dark green (looks black in this light) is one of my oldest that I've had, idk when my mom made it, like 2015 or 2016? I've worn this one a lot since I've had it for so long, it stretches out a lot when I wear it enough and then it shrinks back down when it's washed.
light blue alpaca wool hat that my grandma got for me in 2021. I've worn this one pretty casually but it's in the rotation. It's comfy and keeps me warm, that's all you need baby
blue and white striped hat, knitted by my mom a long time ago too, maybe 2018. one of my faves because it's a thinner hat so I can wear it when it's warm.
middle:
deep blue hat, the only hat that I've purchased myself, I got it a long time ago and recently unearthed it because I prefer my mom's hats.
gray/black dissolve, made by my mom I think in 2019 or 2020 I think. another one of my favorites that I wear out a lot. it's also thin, so I wear it when the weather gets warmer.
light gray, made by my mom last year! It's soft and I like it a lot, very warm and keeps the slouch that I like my hats to have.
bottom:
blue/white/brown/green stripey, also made by my mom last year, I believe. this is a freakin HAT. it keeps you warm and it's got an awesome design and colors and I love it a lot. I got a lot of mileage out of this hat this past year, it's awesome and one of my favorites.
gray worm hat, this was made by my mom in maybe 2017? this is one of the hats that I don't really wear that often, it was more of a "eh this is weird, let's try it" and I don't think I like the design that much. my mom knows, and that's how things go sometimes. I wore it out a few days ago and it looked kinda like a rasta hat and I don't really like that style. oh well, my mom still made it, so I will hold on to it!

2023 review - knitting
Here’s some of the pics of my knitting projects for the year:
Anne/Diana/Gilbert dolls (from Anne of Green Gables):
Tumblr media
These took me nearly two years to complete – I basically knit Anne twice because my knitting gauge had changed so much in that time. I have to redo Gilbert’s hair (the mohair I bought was poorly dyed and not all of it is black), but I love them so much. I knit all of the bodies and knit all of the clothes (except for the petticoats and the buttons).
Tumblr media
I added a “petticoat” of lace to her dress because her dress was so short. Her hair has already lost the curls.
Tumblr media
Aren’t those braids the sweetest? I’ve started making Kurt and Blaine dolls (from glee) and have visions of Mulder and Scully and all of the hobbits and ….
Orchid and Gold Poppins scarf:
Tumblr media
This was knit from a yummy alpaca/tencel/linen blend and it’s so soft. I love how the colors migrated over the scarf. I gave this one to my mom for Mother’s Day. I’m tempted to buy more and make one for me because it is so lovely.
Grandpa sweater:
Tumblr media
Super bulky, soft warm yarn – I’ve bought several skeins of it over the last few years when stores have gone out of business and decided to destash and make my first sweater – I used 8 skeins, plus some remnants. It knit up pretty quickly, because it was so bulky and it’s very warm. If I were to redo it, I would extend the sleeves a few more rows and shift the pockets over.
Christmas scarves:
I’ve been slowly making scarves for my Plethora girlfriends. Made again with Rasta, because it’s so soft and luxurious, and I’ve been trying out different stitches and patterns for each one.
Tumblr media
The blue and purple ones have been blocked, I just need to sew in the ends; the red one has not. I have yarn for 2 more scarves.

I finished my last travel project, my hiking hat. Sadly, I finished it yesterday, after my hiking trip. I leave for another work trip on Monday (this is the last one scheduled), so time to start something else. I'm thinking another shawl. I need to find someone to pawn these extra shawls off on, but I think that's easier than socks or sweaters.
The options are:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pink gradient Mossy Reading Shawl. Basically, use up this silly pink gradient I spun up a couple of years ago. There's about two ounces of 11 skeins in fingering/sport. Plan would be to knit the Reading Shawl but use double moss stitch and an icord edging. Pro: Pink isn't my color and I will happily pass it along. Con: Lots of knitting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Sparkly Ramble. I had small amounts of fibers in Christmas color scheme (White/Silver, Green and Red). A pot of blue dye later and I had colors I like better. Each yarn is one ply merino silk, one ply merino/alpaca (overdyed), and one ply merino/stellina (overdyed). I'm thinking of the Ramble shawl. The blue and green skeins are less than 300 yards, so I'm thinking either making a smaller shawl or alternating the purple in the garter stripes. Pro: use up stash. Con: large balls and choices.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Purple Precipice. I said I was going to make a brioche shawl with this yarn, but I love all three together. I think they'd be interesting in a Precipice, but I could save the pattern for two solids and a fractal yarn. Pros: garter. Cons: garter.

I’ve never knit 2 together before so I decided to try with these colors: Dark Grey in baby alpaca by Blue Sky Fibers and Void by Madeline Tosh in merino. Both are DK so held together they achieved worsted weight. did not get the effect I was looking for so I shall be knitting socks instead but I like the idea of two contrasting neutrals. Perhaps I will try a very light grey with the baby alpaca.

Please please can we have some soft autumn headcanons for Loustat?
As it is the season, can you share some Halloween headcanons with us please?
Louis starts wearing sweaters the moment the temperature dips below 70 F/21 C at night. He has a whole collection of medium-weight sweaters for October and November (ribbed cashmere for autumn, alpaca cable knit for winter). This is also when the the heated blanket Lestat bought him comes out, it's like a heat lamp for a lizard
Every year, they take a couple's trip to New England to look at the best fall leaves. Provincetown is their favorite for longer stays, but they had a great time in Salem. Louis loved the macabre history and Lestat loved the tourist traps
When the humidity drops, Lestat's curls get less poofy and more defined. Louis always musses them up as covertly as he can so they're fluffy again
Sometimes they put spiced cider or mulled wine to simmer on the stovetop just for the scent and warmth
Walmart and brass buttons are good, but every holiday season they go to big box stores just to stare at the seasonal items. Fall is no exception with all the brightly colored plastic masks, glittery silk leaves, different shapes and sizes of pumpkins and gourds, strange costumes, candy in shiny wrappers, and horror movie posters.
Lestat is the most festive of the two of them in terms of holiday kitsch, but Louis finds it cute so he always hires professional decorators to make Lestat's Halloween vision come to life (there's a theme every year)
Louis' Halloween guilty pleasure is slasher movies. He pretends to find them low-brow and tacky, but he's actually transfixed by the gore. He has to feed first though or the Wes Craven corn syrup blood FX make him a little nutty
His real favorite activity is handing out Halloween candy (he's determined to be The Good House) and always has more king-sized candy bars than the neighbors. He doesn't like to dress up for this part of the evening, but he always puts a little fake blood around his mouth and lets his fangs show
Lestat goes the full nine yards for the kids, alternating between full tradvamp regalia and sexy vampire slutfit. He's done normal and sexy versions of Dracula (Lugosi AND Oldman), Count Orlok, Edward Cullen, Damon Salvatore, Spike Buffy, Barnabas Collins, David Lost Boys, Count von Count, and even Bunnicula (that one was bedroom only, a Playboy bunny costume with fake blood made of carrot juice)
He has gotten plastic vampire teeth stuck on his real fangs (twice)
Lestat insists on couple's costumes for their Halloween party every year. In exchange for his cooperation, Louis is allowed to choose his preferred character of the two. Lestat always makes sure any non-hot characters are properly sexy-fied when he's done with them though. They've done Gomez and Morticia, Victor van Dort and Emily, Jack and Sally, Beetlejuice and Lydia, Chucky and Tiffany, The Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit, to name a few. And once werewolves (he thinks it's funny).

A totally all feeling project. Went by my LYS the other day for supplementing a whole different project that's still in the planning stage (aka swatching). And walked away with two balls of Tynn Peer Gynt and one ball of Alpakka Følgetråd. Did some swatching, cast on the next day. Totally unplanned, but so much fun project. Knitting it on 5.5mm needles. Cast it on 3 days ago. Making the pattern as I go. It's flying! And can we just talk about this combination of yarns? I've wanted to try it since it released and I'm loving it. Tynn Peer Gynt is now definitely up there with Finull. And as I've never been a fan of fluff, but always wanted to experiment with optical color blending like this I'm really enjoying the alpaca too.
I have about 100 meters left and then I'll do the hem with the brown contrast (that is a handspun fingering/sport.) To get a good sized cropped throw-over-a-top-when-my-shoulders-get-cold shirt.
14st/10cm is just so much fun from time to time!

Morwen, Rían and the Survival of Bëorian Traditions and Language Past Dagor Bragollach (Part One)
also known as “I wrote this when I should have been studying Myself connecting to the language of my own culture rather than fixating on fictional ones I resonate with”
I talked about clothing and language here. I will absolutely make more posts about this as it’s impossible to cover everything here
As always please feel free to ask stuff!!
Morwen and Rían were both young children when they came to Hithlum following the destruction of their home and the deaths of their families during the Dagor Bragollach. In the text, we are told very little about the effects this has on their culture, language and traditions or what ways they work to preserve them. We also have almost no information on what family members of members of their people and communities survived with them as they are the only named Bëorians who are in Hithlum at the start of the Narn.
Morwen for her part has a very bleak outlook on the survival of her culture.  “The House of Bëor has fallen,” she says bluntly in chapter one. But her pride, mentioned repeatedly in the book, seems to be linked with her Bëorian culture and identity too, and the inevitable burden of trying to preserve it
Note One: more on this topic can be found in my tag “houseless for exiles” which is my tag for the generational trauma of the house of Bëor focused mainly on Morwen but also more generally
Note Two: We have very little canonical information on either Bëorian or Hadorian Taliska or any other human languages of the first age. I talked about language here but much of this has to be speculation or headcanon. What we do know is that the Bëorian and Hadorian dialects of Taliska were distinct (though how distinct we don’t know) and that the Haladin spoke a different language
Clothing: Bëorian and Hadorian clothing has many differences due to both cultural differences and practical ones (weather and climate, etc). For example Hadorian women and girls tend to wear more dresses for both work and formal wear while Bëorian women wear more skirts and robes and dress similarly to men for farming and other manual labor. Colors and dyeing are different too. The Bëorians used more natural dyes and often used more intense colors especially for ceremonial wear. Patterns and motifs differ greatly in theme and placement upon clothing.
Both Morwen and Rían lost almost all their possessions including clothing during Dagor Bragollach. For a long time, what they wore were borrowed or donated clothes, sometimes ill fitting and often unfamiliar materials and styles. Morwen’s clothes at the time of the flight were destroyed when they were cut off to treat her injuries in Brethil which she feels significantly resentful for (and also is harsh with herself for feeling resentful)
Morwen doesn’t always have the time or resources to make clothing entirely in the Bëorian style but she often draws from it. She embroiders familiar patterns on her children’s clothes, uses the traditional colors for formal wear, scarves and other significant items, and knits hats in the style worn by Bëorian children. Many of the supplies used by her people, such as red madder root used in distinctive red dyes, were no longer available. The base materials used for textiles also differ between the people of Ladros and Hithlum. (I have a post on this with more detail but the Bëorians typically use goat and alpaca wool with occasional rabbit and Guinea fur while the Hadorians use sheeps wool and use leather from cows and horses more. Imports or trade of fibrous plants also differ)
Language
Morwen and Rían both grow up speaking Bëorian Taliska. Their parents speak this about half the time but speak Sindarin fluently as well and Morwen was taught Sindarin too starting at the age of seven.
I talked a bit about their learning Hadorian Taliska here. It was a profound change especially for Morwen who resented having to learn new words and customs
I do headcanon that Morwen teaches her children her own language and both Húrin and Aerin end up learning some of it from her. She and Rían continue to communicate almost entirely in Bëorian Taliska though Rían is more prone to mixing. Húrin and Aerin working to learn the language is something that is very important to me. Also it could potentially help later if Morwen and Aerin have a language in common that isn’t widely known or spoken. But I’m getting off topic
Language is one of the strongest areas they hold onto. Morwen especially. I think she feels the urgency more than Rían does at least in the beginning (which makes sense of course as Rían is barely more than a toddler at the time)
Obviously I can’t cover everything here! So As always please feel free to ask more either about Bëorian or Hadorian culture or the individual characters or anything else!
I think I’ll talk more about these subjects then also food and meal routine

Managed to knit a whole bunch on this baby sweater while Frankie drove us to Connecticut and back this weekend. I am using yarn scraps— two colors of merino sock wool held double with mauve alpaca/silk lace. I think it’s awfully cute, and the best possible use for flecked/speckled yarn like this.

Fresh off the needles: socks! (ft. Lulu)
26 Jan. 2024 - 31 Jan. 2024
Ravelry project page
Yarn: Schoeller+Stahl Fortissima Coloria Socka Color sock yarn in the colorway 9096 Blau Wei.
Needles: 2.75mm bamboo DPNs
Pattern: Improvised
What I binged: like 80% of the Technology Connections.
I normally wouldn't buy this yarn, as I'm team natural fibers. I thrift all of my yarn, and last year they had a ton of Debbie Bliss Alpaca Silk (on half off day!!)....mixed with other yarns and divided amongst several bags 🙄 They included two sock "kits" (two skeins of yarn each + a printed out pattern).
This week I found one of the kits in my stash. I'd recently used DPNs for the first time to knit some sweater cuffs and found that I liked them for that, so I decided to give them a go with this sock yarn since my only DPNs were the same size called for in the pattern.
Long ago I had the goal of never buying socks again, but I really struggled with knitting them on circulars and gave up. I started many, many socks but had only finished one pair, which ended up being huge.
The "pattern" was basically just a generic 60 stitch cuff-down recipe, but I prefer knitting socks toe-up, so opted to just improvise a toe-up pattern. I bumped the stitch count up to 65 stitches as I have large feet. I do wish I'd stuck with 60, as they are a little loose on me.
The yarn is self-striping and I decided that I wanted them to match, so it was interesting having to think about that. It was challenging getting the striping to work out well on the heel, but I appreciated that it made it easy to ensure they'd be the same length. I did, however, underestimate how much yarn I'd need for the bind off of the first sock and ended up binding off about 1/4 of the stitches with the white yarn. I'm trying to convince myself that it's charming so I don't have to redo it.
I spent a lot of time thinking about how they might have looked had I decided to go in a different direction with the striping, I kinda wish I had several more skeins so I could try a few variations. I do think I could squeeze some ankle socks out of the remaining yarn (a little over 40g out of 100), but I do still have the other sock kit somewhere, so I may want to combine the extra yarn from both kits.

I am here to yell about my interests!!!!! Mainly in fiber arts and textiles
I spin yarn on a wheel and drop spindles and I’m excited about any opportunity to demonstrate them. In college there was a German professor who saw me spinning at one point and asked me to do a demonstration for her German fairy tales class and it was so much fun
Flax is a really cool fiber but is a bitch to grow & it can only really be spun wet or with wet fingers so most spinners I know spin it outside in the summer bc that can get messy. I read a thinkpiece a while back about flax spinning having been part of the inspiration for sleeping beauty. Not only does flax look straw-like before spinning, but it can naturally be a golden color. Additionally, there’s speculation that instead of pricking her finger on the ‘spindle’ of a wheel (more than likely a quill or distaff, if we’re going with that), it may be that she pricked her finger on a thorn and contracted tetanus from the soil.
Wool is a ridiculously cool fiber bc it keeps you warm even if it’s wet! A lot of fishermen wear wool for that reason. The reason wool felts (and alpaca/llama, among other protein fibers from fur/hair) is bc the surface of the fibers have scales and when they’re in hot water they kinda bloom open like a pine cone; then if you agitate it, the scales get stuck together tight and it’s almost impossible to get it un-felted. It makes for stronger and more water resistant pieces.
Sometimes people use wool’s natural tendency to felt to their advantage. There’s a technique called thrumming where you knit a piece and as you’re knitting, you use a pencil-thin strand of roving for some of the stitches. It leaves a really fluffy interior of the garment (usually mittens) and as they’re worn over time the thrums get felted and your mittens get super cozy!!!
Alpaca and llama fibers are almost identical if you don’t know which is which. They’re both super warm (more so than wool) because the fibers are hollow and trap heat more easily than wool. Both drape beautifully too. The fibers don’t have the same level of elasticity compared to wool though, so often people will blend the two together to get the best of both worlds.
Silk is one of the coolest fibers imo bc it is an incredible insulator, and when it was first used in textiles (in China thousands of years ago iirc), the source of the fiber - silk worms - was a nation secret and kept super super under wraps. Most silk these days comes from India I think, and the vast majority of consumer silk is from mulberry silkworms (it has the longest strand length) but there’s at least three other types of silkworms that can be used. Also silk doesn’t just come in white - it can be green, yellow, copper, all sorts of colors. I actually have some Eri silk in a coppery color I need to spin up at some point!
Cotton can also naturally be different colors - often in greens, yellows, taupes and tans. And the cool thing about that is that it’s not dye, so the color never fades - in fact over time, the color deepens.
A lot of fibers from “plant sources” are also just…semi-synthetic. They’re basically rayon. Bamboo fiber, tencel, etc, are mostly just processed plant material that’s chemically extruded into rayon. Flax and cotton are not; flax fiber is taken from inside the chaff of the flax plant and combed down before spinning, and cotton naturally grows super fluffy, so you just need to remove the seeds before spinning. Much more environmentally friendly, and much safer to process.
There’s a type of fiber called Sea Silk that’s one of the rarest fibers in the world. It’s processed from the beards of a specific type of mussel in the Mediterranean Sea. It looks like gold, and is thought to be the inspiration for the myth of the Golden Fleece in Greek mythology. There’s only one or two people who know how to harvest and process the fiber, and because of climate change, the mussels that provide the fiber are dying out. Last I heard the elder woman who knows this cultural craft has chosen to be the last one to know it.
Hope u like fiber arts!!!!!!!
THIS IS SO COOL
i know very little about fiber arts (ive always had the vague wish to maybe try it out one day but it seems very complicated) but this is really interesting!!!!!!!! all the different fibers and textiles r so wild to me. there's so MANY of them and they are all so different from one another

Interweave Knits, Fall 2023
This issue has several cable sweaters perfect for colder weather and some oversized wraps, plus a color-work hat that is charming. The total is 4 pullovers, 3 cardigans, 3 wraps, 2 hats, 1 vest and 1 blanket.
The cover features the Mim Sweater by Debi Maige, only a 2 out of 4 for difficulty despite the slipped stitched color-work pattern. It is made in a yarn weighted only 1, Illimani Yarn Sabri which is a blend of cotton with a little bit of baby alpaca.
The grey pullover with cables and set-in sleeves is Silver Plume Pullover is my favorite sweater of this issue. It was designed by Therese Chynoweth and is a 3 out of 4 for difficulty. Its cables broaden as they move upwards, a nice way of creating more attention towards the face as well as creating more apparent width as you move from the waist to the shoulders. The yarn is Berroco Lanas Light, a fingering-weight yarn of pure wool.
Cilin Sweater in pale purple is knit in one piece with the sleeves knitted out sideways and is also a 3 out of 4 for difficulty. Vera Marcu designed it in DK weight yarn, Purl Soho Good Wool. Its ribbing which changes to cables as it moves upwards also moves the eye towards the face and broadens the upper body.
Memoir Cardigan by Evelyn Siatra in a pumpkin color also boasts cables, but not buttonholes. Since my whole purpose in donning a woolly sweater is to stay warm, and this one is made of Juniper Moon Farm Patagonia Organic Merino, I like cardigans to close all the way. One could change the front width and add buttonholes to the band, or just move to a less chilly latitude I guess ;-) The other cardigan you see in grey with buttons is a reprint, which you obtain via a QR code and a download, of the Essential Cardigan by Laura Grutzeck.
There are several interesting wraps including Revel Light Shawl by Jennifer Miller Comstock which uses several different colors of blue and green in The Fiber Seed Sprout Sock yarn, and is 2 out of 4. The pinks and purples of Stack Bond Wrap is done with a 6-row windowpane stitch and some knitting below in Manos del Uruguay Allegria a lace-weight yarn, designed by Jennifer Kent.
My favorite accessory is the Tilted Hat by Laura Barker which here uses two shades of grey in worsted weight Hazel Knits Cadence merino yarn, a 3 out of 4, but I think would be worth the effort. You can imagine a lot of nice contrasting pairs of colors for this one.
The patterns are the highlight in this issue, as the one article on yokes is a basic introduction, and then there is a bit on the fall yarns used and on new fall notions.
