Looking at a picture of my crocheted blanket next to the sketch that I made.
They really do look similar.

Foundationless string pieced border: how-to
Tumblr media
Step 1: cut some strips of fabric 2x+1” as wide as your desired border width. I wanted a 2.5” border strip (which will become a 2” border with seam allowance) so I cut 6” strips. Then use your rotary cutter to wonky cut them into strings. The more wonky you cut them, the more interesting the finished border, but if the angle is too steep it becomes hard to truly improv because you won’t get a straight border.
Tumblr media
Randomly sew 12-14 of these strings together, first in pairs, then in 4s and so on. The only rule I followed was to put thin ends against thick ends so each piece ended up a rough rectangle rather than a bigger triangle. Press the seams to one side with your iron:

Wonky, but not too wonky. When I place my 6” ruler on you can see that 5” fits neatly in the middle:

Trim off the excess from each side to make a straight 5” wide rectangle:

Cut the rectangle in half to make two border strips:

To join the strips you will probably have to square the ends of each or you won’t get a straight line. To do this simply use the right angle of the ruler to trim each end and sew together:
Tumblr media
Then join them! If you make several string rectangles at once you can alternate so it looks really random. You may have to re-press the seams on the back once your border strip is done.
I learned this technique from the books of Gwen Marston, in particular her inspiring Liberated String Quilts, which you should definitely check out of the library, it totally opened my eyes to all these techniques I had never even considered. Also check out Freddy and Gwen Collaborate Again for more wild ideas.

Most of the stuff I work on at my alterations job is suits, but today I did a prom dress for the daughter of an acquaintance, and everyone else at the prom is going to be soooooo jealous of the 40 cm deep pockets I added.

I get my media recommendations the old fashioned way: by watching someone I follow on here go on an unhinged reblog spree of media related content until I eventually decide to go "alright, what's all this then"

Hey not to put you on blast or anything but I’m a long way from delicate in any sense. I’m tall for a woman, broad shoulders, big hands (so big I had to buy a vintage wedding ring as modern rings look comical on my paws). This kind of woven work looks complicated but it’s just running stitch (over under over under in a straight line) over a pre-printed design with some surface weaving on top. Anyone can do embroidery. You don’t even have to be a woman to do it, shockingly.

3/4 of the way through the weaving step of this kuguri-sashi sampler. It’s so satisfying and genuinely relaxing, and because there’s no fitting to do or pattern to follow (besides what’s right in front of you) it’s so portable and easy. 10/10 idk what to do with this when I’m done.

we do not talk enough about how you get hit front and back by being a jew and supporting Palestine. For a recipe that i want to make during Shabbat I have to scroll through a jewish recipe blog and cringe at the I Stand With Israel posts and then go back.
so a bunch of jewish spaces aren't safe anymore or are landmines. then you're forced to go someplace else. then there's tumblr with the people who think Jews=Zionist.
like oh, you're jewish? they immediately think you support the idf or something and praise genocide or something. your family barely survived a genocide that wasn't even like more than three generations ago and its being used as some sort of crutch to israel's moral defense when israel does NOT give a fuck about holocaust survivors at all except for their pr...
like damn bro im just trying to live my life and cook normally. Palestine has my entire heart. but like the pipeline from Palestine advocacy to accidental antisemitism to purposeful antisemitism is so 😭😭. man. i just wanna say guys jewish people aren't your enemies. the goal is to stop genocide not make the nazis proud of you or something

Tiffany couldn't quite work out how Miss Level got paid. Certainly the basket she carried filled up more than it emptied. They'd walk past a cottage and a woman would come scurrying out with a fresh-baked loaf or a jar of pickles, even though Miss Level hadn't stopped there. But they'd spend an hour somewhere else, stitching up the leg of a farmer who'd been careless with an axe, and get a cup of tea and a stale biscuit.
It didn't seem fair.
“Oh, it evens out,” said Miss Level, as they walked on through the woods.
“You do what you can. People give what they can, when they can. Old Slapwick there, with the leg, he's as mean as a cat, but there'll be a big cut of beef on my doorstep before the week's end, you can bet on it. His wife will see to it. And pretty soon people will be killing their pigs for the winter, and I'll get more brawn, ham, bacon and sausages turning up than a family could eat in a year.”
“You do? What do you do with all that food?”
“Store it,” said Miss Level.
“But you-”
“I store it in other people. It's amazing what you can store in other people.” Miss Level laughed at Tiffany's expression. “I mean, I take what I don't need round to those who don't have a pig, or who're going through a bad patch, or who don't have anyone to remember them.”
“But that means they'll owe you a favour!”
“Right! And so it just keeps on going round. It all works out.”
“I bet some people are too mean to pay-”
“Not pay,” said Miss Level, severely. “A witch never expects payment and never asks for it and just hopes she never needs to. But, sadly, you are right.”
“And then what happens?"
“What do you mean?”
“You stop helping them, do you?”
“Oh, no,” said Miss Level, genuinely shocked. “You can't not help people just because they're stupid or forgetful or unpleasant. Everyone's poor round here. If I don't help them, who will?”

All the chairs are in the house but the table even in pieces is too heavy for me to lift so it shall remain here in the car until Frankie is feeling better 🥲
Currently on a quest for a larger dining room table so I can iron better. Updates to follow.
