Zelensky appears to have been a good student as a teenager. When he was sixteen, he and another female student won a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) competition in Dnipropetrovsk, the prize for which was a full scholarship to study in Israel. His father, he reports, would not allow it. While prior to the presidency he was known primary as a comedian and secondary as a writer and producer, his interest in affairs of state extends back to his childhood. At sixteen, his biggest interest was in fact international relations, and his dream was to become a diplomat. It was to this end that he studied in a specialized English school. When the time came, he considered applying to the two elite international relations schools potentially available to him then, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s MGIMO (Moscow State Institute of International Relations) and the newer Kyiv Institute of International Relations (KIMV). KIMV, he reports, was a real possibility. But at a time when admissions to elite institutions frequently required strong connections or bribes, Zelensky reports that he ultimately decided against the top schools and instead went to his hometown institution, Kryvyy Rih National University, in 1997. This was also the university at which his father was a professor, though in cybernetics rather than international relations. To hear Zelensky tell it, when he decided to got there for his higher education, his father immediately embarked on a new multi-year stint in Mongolia to avoid any appearance that he might be helping his son at university. As an undergraduate, the future president followed up on his interest in foreign relations and studied international economics and law, where he concentrated on legal science. He recalled in an interview that his first exam was on English, and the second addressed the theory of the state and law. His interest in high politics was thus not something that emerged out of the blue later. And his training in economics, state governance, and law would surely inform his biting political satire and his later diagnoses of Ukraine’s political problems. In 2000, Zelensky received his degree in law.
