rewatching early txf and seeing mulder and scully when they are so young and so enamored with each other is so heavy…they are so excited to have met each other and they are going to go through so much together…they are going to lose their entire families together. they are going to lose time and autonomy and health together. they are going to live together and die together and nearly die together and never die together. they are going to have and lose a child together, and see that loss in each other for the rest of their lives. they are going to look to each other anyway, for everything, and say things like “i’m always happy to see you” and “always happy to find a reason” even at their most distant and estranged. she doesn’t know it then, but running out into the rain after him in bellefleur will be the end of the life that she imagined for herself. she doesn’t know it then, but it will lead to the loss of her safety and her family and her career and her children. and when she does know all of those things, she says “i would do it all over again.” she says “i wouldn’t change a day.” she says “i don’t begrudge you any of those things.” she says “i want to remember how it all was.” and if she could do it all over again, she would still chase him into the rain and laugh when he said that aliens were summoning the kids to the forest and ask him where they were going next and follow to wherever the answer was. because they would rather do this life together than do any other apart.

scully and mulder's dynamic visibly changes after the onset of the season of secret sex
i've been thinking about how dd and ga deliberately played season 7 like mulder and scully were sleeping together, and i think there's solid evidence of that in the differences in how scully reacts to mulder appearing to show interest in another woman before and after the season of secret sex begins (i'm using millennium as the before/after divider bc i think that's what dd and ga decided, but this is based on my vague memory of a reddit comment about it which is how i first learned that the season of secret sex was a thing)
so overall there's an undercurrent of insecurity, borne of scully's uncertainty regarding precisely how mulder feels about her and what her place is in the hierarchy of things that are important to him in his life, that exists in the pre-millennium incidents and is glaringly absent post-millennium:
before millennium:
(i'm not gonna include phoebe/fire here bc i don't think scully's awareness of her feelings had yet risen to the point where she'd be truly jealous, i'd characterize her in that ep as largely protective of mulder and unwilling to let him deal with phoebe's games alone. it also helps that he's clearly not happy phoebe is back in his life again, unlike his much more positive reaction to diana)
war of the coprophages- the second scully finds out about bambi, she immediately hops in her car and drives up to miller's grove to join mulder, bc letting him investigate cockroaches alone was fine but god forbid he spend quality time investigating an x-file with an attractive female scientist who isn't herself- that's their thing!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
syzygy- to be fair the planetary alignment situation was exacerbating her- and mulder's- behavior here, but her jealousy of and hostility to detective white were still real, even if she would've been able to rein in her emotions better under normal circumstances.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
diana fowley arc- i think this speaks for itself, lol
alpha- this is an interesting period in their relationship: after most of the diana shit is over, but before the tension between them is fully resolved (a process which to me begins with milagro/the unnatural and ends with amor fati, but that would be its own post lol).
other than introducing himself to karin as "fox" (maybe as a way to appeal to her preference for canids lol) and thus implicitly giving her permission to call him by his first name (which she proceeds to do throughout the episode), mulder doesn't seem to show much in the way of attraction to her.
even when he touches her hand to move the mouse, he's more interested in what's on the screen than in paying attention to her:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
karin, however, is visibly affected by the contact, a fact which scully immediately notices:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
later in the car, they have this convo, the last line of which is so heavily laden with diana subtext it's not even funny:
Tumblr media
scully's reaction to karin is similar to her reaction to phoebe in that she's motivated mainly by wanting to protect mulder from his own naive, trusting nature, and from someone she believes is seeking to take advantage of it, rather than being motivated primarily by jealousy and defensiveness. she doesn't really believe that karin is a genuine threat to her relationship with mulder, but with diana still fresh in her memory she can't afford to not be vigilant. hence why she confronts karin alone later:
Tumblr media
here scully demonstrates that she somewhat empathizes with karin (mulder is also someone who challenges her, makes her feel fulfilled and happy and alive). karin's response indicates that she has correctly deduced the basis of scully's dislike/distrust of her, and also acknowledges scully is the dominant one as it relates to the territory (mulder) that they are sparring over.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
scully looks away at karin's "feminine wiles" comment, revealing the nagging insecurity about her place in mulder's life that diana's arrival exacerbated and that will continue to plague her until amor fati.
after millennium:
rush- when mulder looks back at chastity in the hallway, scully's reaction is to possessively grab mulder's sleeve and pull him away into the interrogation room:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and his response is to laugh and say "what?" like he doesn't know he belongs to her and only her.
Tumblr media
keep in mind this happens just before they interrogate tony reed, and right after they finish interrogating him this shit happens:
Tumblr media
i already made a post last week about how insanely flirty they are in this episode, but this scene!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
she's pouting and giving him big doe eyes and playing with his tie!! at work!! in public!! she feels comfortable staking her territory in such an obvious way (also playful rather than hostile) bc she's not longer insecure about her place in his life!! i can never be normal about this i'm sorry ssdfgksdgsjdkfhkjsdf
first person shooter- when mulder checks out jade blue afterglow as she's leaving, he leans so far over in such an obvious, exaggerated way, almost as if he's deliberately trying to get a rise out of scully, but all she does is raise her eyebrows at him and lean over to block his view (while smirking):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then he says he's "feeling the great need to blast the crap out of something", an almost direct quote of scully's line from their convo in the autopsy room right before they went down to the station:
Tumblr media
and her response is to SMILE at him!!
Tumblr media
pre-millennium scully would absolutely not have reacted this way in this situation. just like in rush, the insecurity that previously haunted scully whenever mulder seemed to be close to or interested in another woman is utterly absent here. they're joking and teasing and enjoying each other's company like they've always done, but there's a different dimension to it now. pre-millennium mulder would never have made a show of checking out another woman like that right in front of scully (unless a planetary alignment is affecting his behavior ofc lol), and pre-millennium scully would never have found it amusing.
(side note: people were debating on twitter a while back about whether this scene was ooc for mulder, and tbh i'm not sure what my own opinion is bc to me the whole episode has an air of... unreality? idk but it gives me similar vibes to post-modern prometheus, like maybe it's real or maybe it's just someone telling a story or it's somewhere in between, and it's also got that same unserious feel idk how else to describe it)
anyway, back to my main point, which is: dd and ga are damn good actors in the way they were able to subtly telegraph this shift in mulder and scully's dynamic. one might be able to argue that the insane flirting throughout season 7 isn't by itself evidence of the season of secret sex bc on some level they've always been like that, but to me these specific interactions provide important clues that the nature of their relationship has changed.

Going thoroughly insane over how on completely different ends Sora's and Koushirou's roles and relationships with their mothers (and in extension their parents in general) are portrayed in Adventure. And once again, it was ALL based on miscommunication:
Sora is perceived as the tradition-defying "tomboy" who is "loud" and plays football; Koushirou is perceived as the "good boy" who is always "polite and correct" and never acts spoilt or out of line. The key word here is "perceived", because we see both of them display traits in front of their peers that go beyond the "role" their parents witness (and that both of them are willingly or subconsciously displaying in front of them); Sora is actually the caring mom/big sister friend who literally and figuratively takes everyone under their wing, Koushirou is opinionated, forward and outspoken when things are dire and at stake.
Sora's mother wants her to act more like "the daughter of an ie-moto", more feminine, less out of line - at least, that is the message that reaches Sora, since her mother asks her to quit her beloved football. Her polite and aloof attitude appears to be rather cold and dismissive to Sora, which is basically what makes her rebel against the whole flower arrangement business. She feels unloved and misunderstood, as if she cannot be appreciated if she isn't "perfect" in her mother's eyes. Thus she is unable to understand that her mother may just worry about her hurting her injured leg even more. Furthermore, Sora has a very poor grasp on the fact that she herself is acting towards her friends and partner in the exact same way, albeit in a more gentle way most of the time.
Koushirou's mother wants him to be more selfish, to tell her what he dislikes and what bothers him, to stop being perfect at all times - but that is exactly what he physically cannot do, as he himself is doubting his whereabouts and simply tries to just shove all doubts and worries aside. Instead of acting "normal", he is hiding behind that barrier and mask of perfection towards his parents - and has to realize that this attitude is worrying them even more.
In the end, it all gets (mostly) resolved through them realizing that they're still loved regardless of what happened; they don't necessarily HAVE TO change, but it is up to them whether they want to or not. Meaning, their respective arcs of self-discovery have not ended yet, but the foundation for better relationships has been established here. Sora will start playing tennis (a.k.a changing her hobby) in an attempt to move towards her mother more, choosing to do so for her own sake. Koushirou will try to act more open and casual towards his parents, even though he is actively being reassured that his hobby (being into computers) is exactly what he is all about and that he doesn't have to change that.

A Rec For All The Hetalia History Nerds Out Here
Hello my fellow enthusiasts of the five minute comedy anime. I actually decided I should do even more unpaid PR for my favourite BBC4 Podcast.
Anyways, if you are a fan of Hetalia and already a history nerd/would like to get into history, do I have the thing for you:
You're Dead To Me is a Podcast for "people who don't like history, people who do like history and those who forgot to learn any at school". Each episode, the host Greg Jenner (Public Historian & "Chief Nerd to the TV show Horrible Histories") sits down with a comedian and a historical expert, to deliver nearly an hour of a funny history lesson. While you can't cite a podcast for a term paper (as my Dozent pointed out again today), it is still genuine, university lecture level knowledge! And to make sure your head won't explode from all the facts or that the academics won't get lost in ivory tower vocabulary, the class clown is there to ask clever questions and make silly jokes. So it is super factual and super accessible at the same time.
Often, you will get a glimpse at how historians work & how they access the past, too! I know the Anti-Intellectualism is rampant these days, but making academia more transparent and shed light on why certain stories haven't been in the spotlight until recently due to all kinds of bigotry is a much better start than people making shit up on tiktok.
Tomorrow (June 10th), the new series starts, but you can start to listen to the podcast right now with a backlog of over 80 Episodes!
Over 80 Episodes on what, you ask? Everything!
You want to learn about Black History? You will love the episodes on The Notting Hill Carnival, Paul Robeson, the Haitian Revolution, the Harlem Renaissance & many more!
You like your royal history, full of politicking, personal drama and intrigue? We've got The Borgias, King James IV. of Scotland, Saladin and The Mughal Empire for you!
Love the ladies, past and present? Let me introduce you to Eleanor of Aquitane, Joan of Arc, Harriet Tubman, Josephine Baker, Mary Shelley and Mary Wollstonecraft!
Sick of hearing about Western (European) history? Sure thing, find something more to your tastes with The Asante Empire, Mansa Musa, The Tang Dynasty, Genghis Khan, Ivan The Terrible or The Ancient Babylonians.
I could make so many more categories and I'd still not cover every single episode, I am sure. You're Dead To Me is avaible online, on the BBC Sounds App, Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
If you could check out the podcast & share this post/the podcast itself, it would mean a lot to me. As a history student who is currently working on getting her BA, it's immensely important for me that people learn how to recognize the past in the present. That they look around the world and see how we got here a little more clearly; that they look at remnants or depictions of the past and see its context better. If you think that sounds marvellous, if you always wanted to get into history beyond the googleable hard facts, then I invite you to start your journey here with me.
Also, the jokes are often really funny, I swear to God, there are so many bangers that live in my head rentfree.
"So I'm a Dutch-Brit?" "You're a Dutch-Brit." "So I'm Brutch -"
"I have a few silk shirts, every single one of them a mistake. I bought one of them in Italy and I don't know what I was thinking, I look flat-out divorced."
"They found 400.000 [clay] tablets, mate? That's amazing, that's more than at Glastonbury!"

thinking about pusher & plus one (and maybe paper hearts)
in pusher, modell really terrifies scully. mulder going in alone with no gun or close enough backup. in the russian roulette scene, sure, she's afraid to be shot & killed but she's also worried what that would do to mulder. she could see how hard he was fighting modell's influence/control. and that is never turned on scully. mulder is modell's opponent. and like everyone else, he underestimates their connection (he sees it and uses it against mulder but he only sees it as something he can weaponize, oh the folly) and what scully is capable of.
in plus one, mulder succumbs the moment he sees his double, whereas scully brushes it off. she was startled, but she wouldn't give them any power. but she ~does take those bread pills that supposedly protect people from the twins' game. (judy? gives them to her. i remember scully not believing the split. but judy also wanted to take out scully. and oh no i'm seeing this in a new light given ... things i know from my life. anyway)
and thinking of all the times mulder was manipulated. fire, diana, jerry, grotesque, paper hearts. she'd witnessed enough by pusher to know. she knows mulder. she's always trying to pull him back, ground him. and when he refuses, she follows without hesitation.
Tumblr media
i love the way she looks to mulder for answers when she can't rationalize it and she believes him. pulling him back again, into the light as best she can and away from this darkness they don't need to linger in. literally taking his hand, physically tethering him, reminding him of their connection. they're both okay because of each other.

Do you think that other Jedi sometimes played Revan during the Mandalorian Wars, for tactical reasons?
Because Revan – Revan’s incredible grasp of tactics and strategy, Revan’s magnetism as a leader – was the Republic’s trump card but Revan couldn’t be everywhere at once. Some battles needed to be fought without the advantage of having Revan personally in command.
Tactically, you want your enemy to be working with as little accurate information as possible – your numbers, your positioning, your equipment, whether your supreme commander is on the field or not. If the Republic could trick the Mandalorians into believing Revan was somewhere Revan was not the Mandalorians would put themselves at a disadvantage acting on the bad intel – guessing wrongly about what the Republic forces’ primary objectives were, massing more ships and troops to oppose fake!Revan drawing them away from other fronts. They could even replicate the moral boost of fighting under the Republic’s best commander by using a double.
Maybe ironically, the one Jedi I am certain never played Revan was Revan’s best friend Malak. Partly because Malak was too tall, partly because Malak was much more useful to the charade positioned with fake!Revan to sell the illusion. Malak could definitely pick Revan out, regardless of outfit, so if he was standing next to somebody dressed in the full robes and mask calling them Revan then obviously that person must be Revan.
Two likely fake!Revan candidates could have been the future Jedi Exile and – after she was exiled and re-joined the war – Arren Kae. As Revan’s former Master, Kae’s familiarity with her old student’s speech patterns, body language, and other habits made her well prepared as an impersonator. The Jedi Exile was one of Revan’s more highly ranked and skilful subordinates; the command at Malachor V was not one you would give to an untried general, even one you were planning to get rid of. Fake!Revan would need to be in overall command of the forces under them to be convincing, even with Malak there to support them, so it was an assignment which could only go to Jedi with the tactical chops to handle that.
These charades would have been aided by – and contributed to – the general uncertainty surrounding Revan’s appearance, gender, and preferred pronouns.

i apologise for the random ask, but i saw your post about the FS order and immediately questioned myself on how i'd instinctively do it! for me it's
Green -> Blue -> Red -> Vio (-> Shadow)!
Blue and Red may me interchangeable, but i'm pretty sure Green is first for me because he's the leader, as well as because he's the most similar to the original Link and the most undeniably 'loyal' to the group, if that makes sense? 👁️ (Sure, Blue and Red are just as loyal, but somehow Green feels like the unmoving boulder to me!) Vio is closest to Shadow and the opposite of Green, mostly because of his wavering loyalty (whether acted or not), and because he gives the whole expression of being a bit of a loner rather than someone who's fond of teamwork at first.
Blue and Red should probably be the other way around based on this explanation, given how Blue, especially in the beginning, liked to do things on his own and his way only, but.. somehow it's not that way. maybe just because Blue feels more present to me.. 👁️
Thanks for chiming in! It's been really interesting to hear people's thoughts on this! :D

{Met@} on 2012!Koushiro - (+onwards?)
I've had thoughts on Koushiro too, but here's the problem.
I feel I can't even talk about them "genuinely" with this fan base anymore.
When I point out to everyone else, repeatedly, over a span of 8 years, that Koushiro is a canonically adopted character, who was significant representation for the time period Koushiro's story originally aired in (the early 2000s), my points have (often) gone completely ignored. Everyone likes to 'forget' he even has a place (permanently!!) within this canon, and they can't just ~Conveniently~ write him out, even when it comes to 02 Chosen's group.
Because Koushiro was important to the 02 Chosen group too.
But you wouldn't know it from how the "wider" 02 fan base treats him.
When I point out Koushiro is from a canonically "non-normative" familial structure, I just get completely blank response, even from the so-called 'accepting' "met@" side of this fan base.
"But there's a LOT of canonically adopted characters and charas from non-normative families, nowadays! Why do you or anyone else who likes Koushiro need THIS one to stay in this series---??!?" "But we could always have NEW, better characters---!!" "I just think it's time to retire the Adventure Chosen~"
I mention into my void "I hate bio-normativity", and then I have to repeatedly explain (because people can never refer to tags for things I've already spoken on) what the concept of "bio-normativity" MEANS to people who don't even come from "non-normative" familial structures, despite the fact you're all handling (when you speak about these topics) a canonically adopted character.
I'm not biologically related to part of MY family, either.
The thing about Koushiro is, while I'm not "adopted" in the sense of going through any foster care system, Koushiro's situation is actually also a bit similar to my own - but in different ways too.
Koushiro may have lost both biological parents in the car accident, but Koushiro is distantly related to Masami's line of the Izumi family.
"Distantly" implies Masami being something like second or third cousin, but still at least from the Izumi line...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The line about 'real father' aside...) {Masami, YOU are Koushiro's 'real' father now!!}
A lot of the time, when these lines get brought up...
People begin to focus on Yoshie's line the most (yes, I still prefer to call her Yoshie, and I'm sorry, but please don't vague me about changing it) about the "original" Izumi son.
People will sometimes even create elaborate back-stories and head-canons for this "original" son, (isn't it weird how the same rarely happens for Koushiro's own self anymore, when Izumi family is discussed by non-Koushiro stans???) wondering about "what-if" scenarios where Koushiro somehow lived alongside him, and I can't deny I've thought of some similar, but...
... That's not what I think about (in a 'main' sense) when I'm handling Izumi family concepts.
Instead, I think about what Yoshie implies with these lines.
Yoshie looks and sounds extremely dejected the entire scene, up until the point the conversation begins to take a positive turn when they attempt to clarify themselves to Koushiro.
Tumblr media
The dialogue Yoshie had earlier, combined with Yoshie's expressions, and the few extra details we also got from the novel, (I'll come back to those later, sometime) implies the "timing" is convenient. The "timing" is what led to the Izumis adopting Koushiro, after the car accident that killed his biological parents.
But, yet, the Izumi family only ever adopt Koushiro. They never have another 'biological' child. This holds true according to what looks like through Tri (yes we DID see them, in Saikai), Kizuna, and even "The Beginning" (so it's not like Yoshie has a second child very late, either) Koushiro definitely remains an 'only child'.
Which begs the question, to me...
Was Yoshie able to even 'biologically' 'have children' after that point {the original Izumi son's birth} at all?
I say 'I hate bio-normativity' within this series fan base, but I can never fully explain what I mean.
"Obviously Yoshie would LOVE to have a biological child, so Koushiro could have a sibling that might even look a little like him!"
I say 'I hate bio-normativity' and I can't explain.
"Obviously Koushiro would WANT a BIOLOGICAL child that LOOKS LIKE HIM. Why would ANYONE ELSE want otherwise?? It's natural for them to want biological children that LOOK LIKE THEM!!" "Isn't it weird they WOULDN'T LOOK LIKE their parents?!??!" "--Like, I know adoption and such other concepts of non-normative families EXIST but aren't they usually a LAST resort for anyone??---"
I don't "LOOK" like a significant amount of my family members.
I never did and I never will. I never wanted to look like them. I never wanted to have 'features' similar to them.
"But how do we know you're telling the tru---"
I hate bio-normativity.
Why is it that only ever fans from "normative" familial structures can have their Opinions on Koushiro Izumi TM taken seriously by this fan base?
Why does it outright ignore fans from non-normative familial structures when we dare to talk about what "bio-normative" assumptions means for THIS, SPECIFICALLY this, character???
So, about 2012!Koushiro.
I could talk about what I think Koushiro is thinking during this timeframe.
"You know, isn't it funny that Koushiro-kun hasn't ... {dated or} considered settling down yet?"
I could talk about what I think Koushiro wants to consider during this timeframe.
"...Aren't you working too hard?"
But is there any room for genuine, deep discussions on these topics anymore, that won't get anyone immediately shouted down for having ~conflicting~ head-canons on The Epilogue TM, according to those who pride themselves on their "analysis"?
I don't think so, anymore.
But I'm posting my thoughts anyway, because it's my blog, and I'm archiving this so I can refer back to it later if I ever want to show anyone who's actually asked me politely (and not involving shouting and vagueing over conflicting head-canons on The Timeline TM) for my actual thoughts on canon progression and Koushiro's timeline.
Anyway, I hate bio-normativity.
(And also, yes, there's a difference when someone is kind, doesn't make assumptions, and is just generally sharing a head-canon that might conflict with my own thoughts stated here. There's a difference.)
{And usually what I see from this fan base? Is Not That.}
{IMGs by Me} {DO NOT Copy} {DO NOT re-post} (Please ASK to Use)
{This post is marked no rbs because I'm just putting thoughts out there more than anything, but I won't mind if someone appreciates seeing them or gleans something from this.}

Feeling utterly unhinged about Hidden Agenda rn so here's an aimless meta? linguistic meandering through the episode?? Eh, bit of both, I guess.
Disclaimer: I'm still learning Thai so feel free to correct me on anything 🙏
Part 2/4 currently doesn't have subs (watching without any subs turned out to be easier than I expected) so I don't know in how far the subs make it clear but-
Tumblr media
When Joke first comes to Zo's dorm and meets his mom, he expectedly addresses her as คุณน้า (khun naa). It's a polite way to address an aunt (specifically the younger sister of one's mom) or address a woman who could be your aunt, age-wise.
As we saw, they seemed to have bonded pretty quickly over cooking so I was delighted to hear Joke call her คุณแม่ (khun mae) already when she invites him to stay for dinner. It's a polite form of address for someone's mother - you could call your friend's mom this, a teacher might address a student's mother like that, it's a respectful way to call your partner's mom or even your own if you're that formal with your parents. Zo's mom most likely offered it to him.
Apart from this linguistic context clue, I think it was pretty obvious how grateful Zo's mom was for Joke bridging the gap and letting her know a bit about what Zo is up to these days. He doesn't seem to talk to his mom much at all but then again he keeps his feelings inside a lot anyway. It's lovely that Joke encourages him to be more open with his feelings and thoughts, not just towards Joke himself but everyone! He's really been consistently trying to get Zo to come out of his shell, experience new things, and be less passive.
Let's talk about the food Zo's mom made! (At least as much as I'm catching, with the lack of subs 🥴)
Tumblr media
It's all Southern Thai dishes, อาหารใต้ (ahaan dtai), which are generally known to be spicy hot hence Joke's suffering and sweating lol
Food pictures courtesy of this handy-dandy Wikipedia list, where you can also read up on these and other Thai dishes if you're interested!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dish Joke and Zo's mom rescue from burning to a crisp is หมูหวาน (moo wan), "sweet pork".
Next up is the curry that Zo's mom makes sure to serve Joke: It's called แกงส้ม (gaeng som), orange curry, in Southern Thailand but everywhere else it's called แกงเหลือง (gaeng lueang), yellow curry, or แกงส้มใต้ (gaeng som dtai), Southern Thai orange curry, to differentiate it from central Thai แกงส้ม (gaeng som), orange curry. The one in the picture above is made with fish.
A clearly struggling Joke says he likes Southern food, especially กุ้งผัดสะตอ (goong phat sataw), shrimp stir-fried with the "stink" beans we see being used as a punishment/challenge at the end of the episode. The picture above is of the pork variety of this dish, หมูผัดสะตอ (moo phat sataw).
I'm not actually sure what the dessert is that Zo's mom shows up with as the boys are having A Moment™. But judging from the color, I'm gonna assume it's grass jelly, เฉาก๊วย (chao guay).
Tumblr media
As for the tongue twister / pronunciation exercise - the translators did a nice job in choosing an equivalent English one but that can't stop me from sharing the Thai one hehe
ยักษ์รักลิง /yak rak ling/ = giant loves monkey
ลิงรักยักษ์ /ling rak yak/ = monkey loves giant
ลิงน่ารัก /ling naarak/ = cute monkey
ยักษ์รักลิง /yak rak ling/ = giant loves monkey
So here's how Joke ends up using it to continue to be dorky-sweet to cheer Zo up flirt:
ยักษ์รักลิงแล้ว /yak rak ling laew/ = The giant loves the monkey (already). (It's possible he says อยาก /yaak/ here, my ability to distinguish tones ain't all that, in which case it would be Want to love the monkey.)
ลิงรักยักษ์บ้างปะ /ling rak yak baang bpa/ = Does the monkey love the giant at all?
ไม่ต้องรักยักษ์ก็ได้นะ /mai dtawng rak yak gaw dai na/ = Don't have to love the giant.
แต่แค่กลับมาคุยกับยักษ์เหมือนเดิมก็พอแล้ว /dtae kae glap maa kuy gap yak meuuan deerm gaw paw laew/ = Just going back to speaking with the giant same as before is enough.
Tumblr media
I'm still in disbelief that Zo could make this smitten face at Joke yet not realize that Joke basically just confessed to him!
This show keeps on driving me crazy with how these characters look at each other, in general. There's a lot of tension, and with how JoongDunk and P'Tee have talked about this series and these characters, I'm kind of expecting that tension to resolve in

thinking tonight about how much has been written over the past 30 years about the x files' subversion of gender roles, mulder as a 90s sci-fi hero who is the more emotional and open of the two, who cries on screen regularly, who is empathetic to a fault and deeply devoted to helping the vulnerable. scully as the rational one, the science brain, the person who is taken seriously. the unique view of a relationship to the paranormal and occultism, which, from its rise in the 1940s, was originally viewed as feminine and something irrational that women were comforted by. and how all of this is true and interesting but, to me, none of it is the biggest marker of gendered experiences in their characters.
at the end of the day, their characters both respond exactly as men and women in our society do, in the ways that they respond to violence.
mulder, in his mid-20s, started at the FBI working in the violent crimes division
Tumblr media
where his profiling abilities, his way of being able to get into the mind of a killer, were revered
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it's also where, in his words, he first saw monsters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this show always deeply understood that the scariest monsters were not the vile creatures, they were violent men, and some of the most memorable villains on the show (john lee roche, luther boggs, john barnett) are resurfaced serial killers that mulder previously caught in his violent crimes days.
but mulder's background is in behavioral science, and he always wants to understand what makes someone how they are
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and his positive worldview requires him to view every act of evil as the consequence of a larger cause, as not being senseless
which is why he wants to believe that men who are killing women are only doing so out of a biological imperative to survive
Tumblr media Tumblr media
or out of a misguided attempt to SAVE them
Tumblr media
meanwhile, scully is affected by the brutalization of women on an emotional level.
she hangs back at the crime scene and the police station to compose herself, while the men she's working with march up to a woman's desecrated corpse
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
she knows that even when mulder is right, even when the killer is acting out of a biological need for survival
Tumblr media Tumblr media
that doesn't make it any better
Tumblr media
because the impact on the women that he brutalized is more than physical, it's more than biological, it's more than any rational reasoning that he might have behind why he did it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
she knows that it doesn't matter
Tumblr media
and she doesn't need to try to understand. she doesn't need to know what the killer's reasoning is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
she already knows why men brutalize women
Tumblr media
she's experienced it, she doesn't need to study it.

1, 2, 8, 14 for Hikari Yagami! (lol I just like the Yagami siblings a whole lot)
[ask meme list]
(It's OK, i like them too!!)
1- My first impression of them
Like i mentioned before, in previous memes/challenges, 02 was the very first official entrance to the franchise -- even if i had watched a few episodes of Adv'99 before, but only when i got interested in 02 and it was about to be starting to be aired in Brazil (in 2001).
Vague memories of Hikari -- or, Kari, since i'm here talking about the BR dub this time -- is that she was a strong mysterious lady but very gentle and soft. As I watched 02 I really liked her, and was cheering for Davis (BR dub Davis is just like Daisuke, except with a Carioca accent) to get a chance to show how devoted he was.
I also had a strong attachment to Nefertimon and Tailmon as a kid too, Tailmon was my favorite digimon before V-mon appeared and stole my heart 🤣
Anyway, I love Hikari so much. Since I watched 02 with the JP cast/and fansubs, and i love how she's very able to manipulate people in order to get what she wants lol (yes, she's self-aware of this, of how she can control Daisuke and this is the group's advantage somehow lol)
2- When I think I truly started to like them (or dislike them, if you've sent me a character I don't like)
I think watching 02 with friends on our 02 rewatch party lockdown 2020 was when i truly started to like Hikari, and to apologize to her and to Takeru about my bad perception of their characters & portrayals there...
Also, MAO is fantastic as Hikari in Kizuna's Drama CD, and the BP Kizuna's character songs. But I also love her OG VA, Araki Kae and she will be forever associated with the kid Hikari-chan for me.
8- Your favorite outfit of them
I like a ton of outfits for Hikari-chan!! But mostly 02 and Kizuna ones! But lately i'm in love with her design for the new movie. I wanna dress like Hikari-chan!!
Tumblr media
Isn't she cute as an adult lady? 😊🥰
14- Best storyline they had
I'm still thinking 02 is the best of Hikari's potential explored and developed. You can notice the biggest difference in her in the Kizuna drama CD, in which she's able to voice her own needs and desires more often.
But if anything... 02 ep 31 is the best Hikari-chan episode ever.
I highly recommend reading Shiha's metas about Hikari-chan. Because they also helped me to see what i didn't before, and she also worded a ton of things i've noticed before but never got courage or skill enough to say it aloud.

For now, have a picture of Kae bebe as thanks. I stole it from the family photo book.

Cloying: In the Event of Love
I just finished In the Event of Love by Courtney Kae. I have some thoughts...
Tumblr media
Here there be spoilers!
Ah, it’s that time of year. Mariah Carey blaring from the radio. Peppermint drinks. And, of course, cheesy romances.
“City girl returns home after a scandal, runs a charity event...a wholesome small-town occasion. It’s Hallmark-level perfection.”
This is an actual line from Courtney Kae’s festive feel-good novel In the Event of Love. At least it’s self-aware.
The novel is narrated by Morgan Ross, the aforementioned city girl, who has in fact returned to her hometown in the wake of a professional scandal. Once there, Morgan is voluntold by her former friend Ben that most of their old crowd is still in town. Including Rachel Reed, Morgan’s ex-girlfriend and owner of a local christmas tree farm. Said farm--and the rest of the town’s businesses--are being preyed on by Christy Vaughn: the evil ex-girlfriend of Morgan’s dad. What follows is pretty rote. Morgan takes up the challenge to help save the tree farm by organizing a fundraiser, the whole town gets in on it rather than see Evil Christy succeed in buying up their town and turn it into a soulless corporate shell, and Morgan both wins the day and gets her girl.
In full honesty, as much as a I love anything holiday themed, this is not a book I would have chosen for myself (my book club did). Here’s the thing: cheesy christmas romances work best as movies. Because you can enjoy them in a ninety minute sugary burst, like drinking a mug of rich hot chocolate with all the fixings. But trying to read the same thing in three hundred pages? That’s more like trying to drink the whole pot of cocoa by yourself. It’s cloying, and you leave feeling sick enough to swear off it forever.
The characters, while sweet, are pretty one-dimensional. And the ones we do know best are least interesting. (Where was the Ben and Adam love story? At this point, I want another book just so I can get the dish on the characters I actually wanted more about.) The plot felt predictable to the point of plodding through it. And, frankly, the novel veers out of tongue-in-cheek into just cringy meta: “I love that she doesn’t hide her book. Romance novels should be flaunted with pride...The author, Becca Rae, is a name I don’t recognize. The cover features snow-capped mountains and a couple who should probably be wearing warmer clothing, and I’d like to live in it, thanks.” It’s like a fourth wall break, but like: not funny.
At the risk of sounding like an absolute grinch, I’m not sure I like Morgan’s arc. I know what I’m supposed to feel. I’m supposed to be so glad that Morgan and Rachel end up together, that Morgan chooses love over success. ‘Villain’ Christy says “Family...always felt like a business transaction. You can understand wanting to prove yourself, can’t you?” And Morgan can “finally see her for who she is. Insecure, trying to figure herself out in a world that expects her to know who she is already, that constantly demands she prove herself.” Morgan has that same hunger to achieve. The woman we meet at the beginning of the novel is determined to earn a promotion to run a whole office herself. Part of her agenda in agreeing to run the fundraiser is to recover enough from her slip-up to secure it.
But, as she spends more and more time being wrapped up in the comforts of home, Morgan finds herself getting swept away. “Every day spent up here makes Los Angeles and the dreams it holds seem farther and farther away, new dreams easing closer to my heart...I don’t know how I’m ever going to choose, or if moving back here could even be an option.” The message is that it has to be a choice, that she has to sacrifice what’s been painted as a huge part of her character. To be clear: there’s nothing wrong with wanting to live in a smaller town or not hinging your personal value on professional success. I’m actually one of those people. I don’t get career obsession. To me, work is just work. But Morgan’s really passionate about her career, and I respect that. So when I see her wondering “Could I have had a whole community of family-like friends if I stuck around? ...Could I still have that now?” My heart breaks for her. It feels like she’s so desperate for human connection that she’s willing to give up everything she’s earned and become to revert back to some high school version of herself.
And it didn’t have to be that way. Morgan was honest about being a city girl, was talking about commuting and making things work even long distance with Rachel. And when Morgan gets that New York promotion, she immediately tells Rachel and offers to try and figure out ways to make it work. To which, Rachel immediately shuts down and freaks out that Morgan is once again leaving her (even though it bears observing that part of their story was Rachel shutting down and refusing to talk things out with Morgan the first time they broke up when Morgan first moved away). Rachel tells Morgan “I’ll never ask you or anyone to stay for me again. It has to be your choice, or there will always be a part of me that hates myself for asking.” And when Morgan doesn’t immediately leap to burn up this big opportunity she got to unequivocally choose staying in little Fern Falls with Rachel, Morgan is dumped and vilified.
But what did she do wrong? Rachel seems to have no growth here. She could be less insecure, could examine whether staying in the same little town is really the best way, could see if there’s any compromise here. Nope. Of course it’s Morgan who has to give up everything, change her career to something that will keep her local, and essentially give up everything she built in order to accommodate this romanticization of her past.
I wish instead of following the pattern that we’d been given the gift of surprise. What if they tried long distance? What if Rachel moved away? What if Christy won the battle for Fern Falls, but that’s ok because they all needed to be untethered from the traumas of their pasts? Instead, Morgan is the one who has to cut off an entire part of her character, make herself smaller, in order to fit with Rachel. Frankly, if Rachel were a man and this were a straight couple? We’d be outraged, or at least resigned.
Considering how many romcoms I’ve read, it may seem odd that I’m taking this one so hard to task. But I think the problem I’m having is that I appreciate queer romcoms that undercut expectations with some kind of subversion. Maybe it’s that the characters have emotional depth and growth. Maybe it’s that the expected script veers off in an unanticipated direction. Maybe it’s that expected gender roles are reversed or abolished. Or something entirely different. But that’s what this book was begging for: subversion of expectations. That would have been the refreshing palate cleanser this book needed. Instead, we’re left with something predictable: saccharine to the point of sickening, another cloying christmas romcom.
