thinking about pusher & plus one (and maybe paper hearts)
in pusher, modell really terrifies scully. mulder going in alone with no gun or close enough backup. in the russian roulette scene, sure, she's afraid to be shot & killed but she's also worried what that would do to mulder. she could see how hard he was fighting modell's influence/control. and that is never turned on scully. mulder is modell's opponent. and like everyone else, he underestimates their connection (he sees it and uses it against mulder but he only sees it as something he can weaponize, oh the folly) and what scully is capable of.
in plus one, mulder succumbs the moment he sees his double, whereas scully brushes it off. she was startled, but she wouldn't give them any power. but she ~does take those bread pills that supposedly protect people from the twins' game. (judy? gives them to her. i remember scully not believing the split. but judy also wanted to take out scully. and oh no i'm seeing this in a new light given ... things i know from my life. anyway)
and thinking of all the times mulder was manipulated. fire, diana, jerry, grotesque, paper hearts. she'd witnessed enough by pusher to know. she knows mulder. she's always trying to pull him back, ground him. and when he refuses, she follows without hesitation.
i love the way she looks to mulder for answers when she can't rationalize it and she believes him. pulling him back again, into the light as best she can and away from this darkness they don't need to linger in. literally taking his hand, physically tethering him, reminding him of their connection. they're both okay because of each other.

scully and mulder's dynamic visibly changes after the onset of the season of secret sex
i've been thinking about how dd and ga deliberately played season 7 like mulder and scully were sleeping together, and i think there's solid evidence of that in the differences in how scully reacts to mulder appearing to show interest in another woman before and after the season of secret sex begins (i'm using millennium as the before/after divider bc i think that's what dd and ga decided, but this is based on my vague memory of a reddit comment about it which is how i first learned that the season of secret sex was a thing)
so overall there's an undercurrent of insecurity, borne of scully's uncertainty regarding precisely how mulder feels about her and what her place is in the hierarchy of things that are important to him in his life, that exists in the pre-millennium incidents and is glaringly absent post-millennium:
before millennium:
(i'm not gonna include phoebe/fire here bc i don't think scully's awareness of her feelings had yet risen to the point where she'd be truly jealous, i'd characterize her in that ep as largely protective of mulder and unwilling to let him deal with phoebe's games alone. it also helps that he's clearly not happy phoebe is back in his life again, unlike his much more positive reaction to diana)
war of the coprophages- the second scully finds out about bambi, she immediately hops in her car and drives up to miller's grove to join mulder, bc letting him investigate cockroaches alone was fine but god forbid he spend quality time investigating an x-file with an attractive female scientist who isn't herself- that's their thing!!
syzygy- to be fair the planetary alignment situation was exacerbating her- and mulder's- behavior here, but her jealousy of and hostility to detective white were still real, even if she would've been able to rein in her emotions better under normal circumstances.
diana fowley arc- i think this speaks for itself, lol
alpha- this is an interesting period in their relationship: after most of the diana shit is over, but before the tension between them is fully resolved (a process which to me begins with milagro/the unnatural and ends with amor fati, but that would be its own post lol).
other than introducing himself to karin as "fox" (maybe as a way to appeal to her preference for canids lol) and thus implicitly giving her permission to call him by his first name (which she proceeds to do throughout the episode), mulder doesn't seem to show much in the way of attraction to her.
even when he touches her hand to move the mouse, he's more interested in what's on the screen than in paying attention to her:
karin, however, is visibly affected by the contact, a fact which scully immediately notices:
later in the car, they have this convo, the last line of which is so heavily laden with diana subtext it's not even funny:
scully's reaction to karin is similar to her reaction to phoebe in that she's motivated mainly by wanting to protect mulder from his own naive, trusting nature, and from someone she believes is seeking to take advantage of it, rather than being motivated primarily by jealousy and defensiveness. she doesn't really believe that karin is a genuine threat to her relationship with mulder, but with diana still fresh in her memory she can't afford to not be vigilant. hence why she confronts karin alone later:
here scully demonstrates that she somewhat empathizes with karin (mulder is also someone who challenges her, makes her feel fulfilled and happy and alive). karin's response indicates that she has correctly deduced the basis of scully's dislike/distrust of her, and also acknowledges scully is the dominant one as it relates to the territory (mulder) that they are sparring over.
scully looks away at karin's "feminine wiles" comment, revealing the nagging insecurity about her place in mulder's life that diana's arrival exacerbated and that will continue to plague her until amor fati.
after millennium:
rush- when mulder looks back at chastity in the hallway, scully's reaction is to possessively grab mulder's sleeve and pull him away into the interrogation room:
and his response is to laugh and say "what?" like he doesn't know he belongs to her and only her.
keep in mind this happens just before they interrogate tony reed, and right after they finish interrogating him this shit happens:
i already made a post last week about how insanely flirty they are in this episode, but this scene!!
she's pouting and giving him big doe eyes and playing with his tie!! at work!! in public!! she feels comfortable staking her territory in such an obvious way (also playful rather than hostile) bc she's not longer insecure about her place in his life!! i can never be normal about this i'm sorry ssdfgksdgsjdkfhkjsdf
first person shooter- when mulder checks out jade blue afterglow as she's leaving, he leans so far over in such an obvious, exaggerated way, almost as if he's deliberately trying to get a rise out of scully, but all she does is raise her eyebrows at him and lean over to block his view (while smirking):
and then he says he's "feeling the great need to blast the crap out of something", an almost direct quote of scully's line from their convo in the autopsy room right before they went down to the station:
and her response is to SMILE at him!!
pre-millennium scully would absolutely not have reacted this way in this situation. just like in rush, the insecurity that previously haunted scully whenever mulder seemed to be close to or interested in another woman is utterly absent here. they're joking and teasing and enjoying each other's company like they've always done, but there's a different dimension to it now. pre-millennium mulder would never have made a show of checking out another woman like that right in front of scully (unless a planetary alignment is affecting his behavior ofc lol), and pre-millennium scully would never have found it amusing.
(side note: people were debating on twitter a while back about whether this scene was ooc for mulder, and tbh i'm not sure what my own opinion is bc to me the whole episode has an air of... unreality? idk but it gives me similar vibes to post-modern prometheus, like maybe it's real or maybe it's just someone telling a story or it's somewhere in between, and it's also got that same unserious feel idk how else to describe it)
anyway, back to my main point, which is: dd and ga are damn good actors in the way they were able to subtly telegraph this shift in mulder and scully's dynamic. one might be able to argue that the insane flirting throughout season 7 isn't by itself evidence of the season of secret sex bc on some level they've always been like that, but to me these specific interactions provide important clues that the nature of their relationship has changed.

I just think……. Jing Yuan is very hedonistic w you. He’s let himself be more loose in his older years, lazes about, indulges in little things he’d always denied himself in his youth. zoro and i adopt a scrawny stray dog that we find wandering the streets of a sleepy seaside town. he’s a starving, anxious little thing, likely the runt of his litter and struggling to survive; how can i do anything but convince my boyfriend that we have to take him with us? zoro feels completely out of his depth with the dog—he didn’t grow up around animals, and doesn’t feel like he’s fit to care for another creature—but our little guy ends up loving him more than he loves me (traitor).

imma be honest i still dont like lakan.
yes he was young and naïve and he made a mistake. but the mistake was so fatal that no matter his intentions i cannot say that i like him now because i know his situation. the reason he made this mistake in the first place is not because he made a genuine mistake but one that comes from his ease of mind in his status as both an aristocrat and a man. i imagine maomao's mother is younger than him but she went through so much more that she was forced to mature. his naïveté is one of a man who does not consider, does not even know to consider, that his situation is much. Much. different than that of a courtesan. his character is interesting for sure im glad he and maomao's mother are reunited but doesnt mean i think of him any more fondly than before.

Yes! It’s especially insane with Phoebe bc like the show goes out of it’s way to explicitly show how fucked up she was idk how people forget it
yep yep yep!! it's quite literally the entire point of the episode. but i still see people all the time like...calling mulder stupid for "trusting" her and making jokes about the way he behaves around her and it's just like...please don't piss me off. same exact thing with diana.
fire is one of my favorite episodes though i think it's such an interesting look at mulder's character and example of the ways that he views and interacts with people close to him
because he understands and acknowledges from the very beginning that phoebe's just there to fuck with him, that she made the trip from boston to DC to bring him in on the investigation for no reason other than knowing that it will scare him
he knows what she’s doing, and he still agrees to help her
his only concession being that scully not be involved
noting that he's not going to "put her through" phoebe's games
this is something that we've seen him do before, with his former partner jerry earlier in season one, who broke into his office and stole his work.
it's clear throughout ghost in the machine that mulder isn't comfortable working with him, but helps him anyway because jerry asked him to
and builds him up when jerry is feeling insecure
he infamously does it again with diana, always affording her the benefit of the doubt and defending her
and with his parents, consistently coming whenever they call, despite all of their lies and neglect
(side note from pulling ghost in the machine caps but his ties in this ep are soooo classic baby spooky i miss s1 soooo much)
anyway, this is the dynamic that fire circles around, and the only time in the episode that mulder pushes back against phoebe is when he cracks this joke about having a "refined technique" with women who cheat
which he apologizes for instantly, recognizing that it upset her
fire is also one of the best portrayals of the true sign of a toxic/abusive relationship: not realizing anything is wrong with it until you tell your best friend
i see criticism of this episode sometimes that interprets it as glorifying phoebe, portraying her as sexy and her behavior as righteous, but i disagree.
i don't think that you can base the episode's stance on phoebe on mulder's behavior, he's responding to her through a very warped and controlled lens. just because he views her in a positive light, doesn't mean that we should as the audience.
whereas, scully is immediately wary of phoebe and critical of her, even before knowing the context for her actions.
this shot is my favorite lmao. she is contemplating murder. she is wondering if she could get away with it.
her lil passive aggressive "bye bitch" finger wave
her "mmmmyeah sure sherlock"
her watchful eye as she hangs in the doorway while mulder and phoebe meet with the arson specialist
she literally sits at his desk in his chair and waits for him just to make this sherlock holmes joke 😭😭😭 they are BEST friends
now, this is when she finds out the true history with phoebe, and the reason behind her visit. and it's when mulder tells her that she's off the case.
and from that point, scully starts investigating the murders herself, consulting her own sources to put together her own theories
while these two do absolutely fuck all
she shows up uninvited at the event in boston, having SOLVED THE CASE HER-FUCKING-SELF
and she's the only one who gives a fuck when mulder gets hurt
while phoebe shakes hands and schmoozes at the party
sweetie pie making sure her partner gets some water and some rest
now, dana 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
after making sure mulder is okay (and getting a peek at him shirtless) she shows him the evidence that she found, telling him that she just "didn't know a whole lot about arson" so took the opportunity to do some research "for my own edification, of course" GIRLLLLL
and they identify the groundskeeper as the murderer based on the information that she gathered
the face of a woman who single-handedly solved a string of serial murders to get her best friend's bitch of an ex away from him. she is truly an inspiration to us all.
and she has 1 more sherlock holmes joke in her.
so, anyway, mulder is visibly uncomfortable around phoebe from the start, and this is something that scully picks up on immediately, even before being told any information about phoebe or her motives
and this is an ongoing theme from the very beginning, as mulder is generally unaggressive and compassionate to a fault, leaving scully feeling a responsibility to be conscious and wary of their surroundings.
scully isn't being jealous towards phoebe, just like she isn't "taking things personally" with diana. she understands this about mulder and how exploitable it is, and she's fiercely protective of both him and the kindhearted qualities that leave him vulnerable to these situations

The thought lurked in the back of his brain as he pored over his research.
It was the most persistent of his fears, the one he couldn't seem to shake. 'What if I fail? What if I can't do this?' — those thoughts he simply refused to entertain. He would bring Shadow back because he had to, because he would allow no other option. 'Could' was not in question. But 'should'...
A strand of hair fell into Vio's face, tickling as it brushed past his cheek. He swiped it away with a scowl, as if doing so could dislodge the nagging thought.
It didn't help.
Selfishness. That's what this was, at least in part.
There were plenty of good reasons to try to bring Shadow back: because it was right, because Shadow deserved a chance at a life of his own, because Shadow had been lonely, because Shadow had saved them, because Shadow hadn't deserved to be trapped permanently in the Dark World for the attempt.
But he also wanted to bring Shadow back because he missed him, and he wanted to see him again.
And it would be perfectly understandable if Shadow did not want to see him, after everything he had done.
He shoved the thought aside — even knowing that it would return again — and forcefully brought his attention back to the book in front of him. The important thing was that Shadow be given the choice.

The symbols etched around the edge of the mirror glowed to life.
It wasn't The Mirror — that had been one of the first leads Vio had tried, but the original Dark Mirror had been shattered beyond any possible repair. This was a new mirror, forged from a few of the surviving shards, from Moon Pearl dust, from over a years' worth of careful calculations. Less of a 'fountain of darkness,' as Shadow had called the original, and more of a gateway.
It's his choice if he wants to step through or not, Vio reminded himself, as he watched his reflection disappear, replaced by swirling dark fog.
For agonizingly long moments, nothing more seemed to be happening.
Just when Vio's heart was starting to sink, the fog began to swirl faster. It seemed to become denser, more concentrated. Taking on a vaguely humanoid shape.
The smoky figure moved closer, approaching the glass. It raised an arm, the vague shape of a hand pressing against the mirror's surface.
And then pressing through.
The fog coalesced as it emerged, indistinct darkness giving way to skin and sleeve — arm, shoulder, torso.
A flash of red eyes, sudden movement, and Vio only just had time to wonder if he was about to be punched, before he was wrapped in a hug.
The force of the collision had him rocking back on his heels. Shadow's arms wound around his chest, squeezing firmly, warm and solid and alive. Vio let out a choked little noise, somewhere between a gasp and a sob.
Shadow drew back — not far, but far enough to look Vio in the eyes. "Did I hold on too tightly?" he asked, brows drawn together in concern, one hand reaching up to brush strands of hair out of Vio's face.
Vio shook his head, pressing his cheek into Shadow's palm as he did so. "No," he whispered, past the lump of emotion in his throat. "Not too tightly at all."
He wrapped his own arms around Shadow in return, dropping his head to Shadow's shoulder, and let himself hold on as hard as he wanted to.
