So, let's say George Lucas was more self aware producing/directing the prequels and hired you to reign him in/keep him on track. How would the prequels be different?

What a fucking FUN question. :D I've been chewing over this in my inbox for a couple days.

Honestly you couldn't pay me enough to write for Star Wars, and that's not just because I'd be fired on my second day for making it so gay. I think there absolutely are problems in the prequels, but I also think no matter what films they made, it was going to be a difficult tango of trying to keep an existing fanbase happy while attracting new ones, doing the old story homage but also not just retreading stale territory, and the fact that an entire generation came up with headcanons for what the Clone Wars or young Obi-Wan or Vader was like in that era, and no matter what you do, someone was going to be disappointed.

I also have a ton of sympathy for Star Wars writers in general - I see stories like Mike Chen who wrote the Brotherhood novel having to get the book together in three months over 11 drafts or the Rebels writers working unpaid nights and weekends to try to land the story they loved decently because they weren't given enough time or money. I don't know what it's like to write or create content for Lucasfilm, but I can't help but think of Warren Fu, who created the iconic General Grievous design for Lucas, later drawing himself as Sifo-Dyas being drained of blood to create Grievous. The metaphor he chose there is, um, interesting, to say the least, and I wonder how it reflects on his time at Lucasfilm. I see these anecdotes all the time of writers and creators working incredibly hard for little money or recognition and then their passion project gets changed or sidelined by the powers that be within the franchise.

ANYWAY THAT SAID HERE'S HOW I'D FIX THE PREQUELS- I think it's really a matter of redrafting what's there because so much of it is really good and has great potential. I just rewatched the Phantom Menace, so that's on my mind. Yeah, I remember being little enough that Jar Jar Binks was funny to me - I love Ahmed Best - but having just rewatched it, Jar Jar gets a ton of screentime and that could be better balanced. AND oofa-doofa, the racist accents/stereotypes. Cut cut cut. Rework.

Otherwise, I think there's a tendency - and some of it was the popular movie tropes at the time the films were going out - to rely on Idiot Plot. OOPS, Anakin didn't mean to go to the big space battle!!! He just won the day on accident!! To a lesser degree, many other characters make it through the movie by just sort of guessing and lucking their way into it as a narrative choice. Just going by the fact that the films need to be about the good guys losing because it's a prequel for a saga with no Jedi, I'd like a little bit more agency for them. More moments of saying "yes, I want to do this" and less "wow, what the hell is going on?!"

The other big change I'd make is give Obi-Wan a much larger role in the Phantom Menace, and Padme a bigger part in both AotC and especially RotS. (Actually, she really kicks ass in TPM. That moment where she shoots through the window and the duel of the fates music swells? Ascension guns!! I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about it.) I think Anakin is the most sympathetic when he's seen through the eyes of characters who love him and vouch for him. And Obi-Wan is honestly barely in TPM - it's all Qui-Gon, who I love, but I could see the film being really successful through him as our perspective/focus character instead. The way that Luke Skywalker takes us with him on this adventure and shows us the story. Obi-Wan could do that very effectively. And as much as the prequels are about Anakin's fall, they're also ultimately a story of Obi-Wan's survival.

And I'd cut Count Dooku, for no reason other than I don't like how weird I got about that guy.

I have so many problems with Strange New Worlds, but fundamentally I'd like it so much better if it wasn't about yhe USS Enterprise NCC-1701. It is forever cut-off by the knees by this idiotic choice to make it a prequel—for all that Discovery failed to achieve, its smartest idea was if you HAD to make it a TOS-era prequel, you set it on a ship never mentioned before, with a crew never mentioned before, and even its lead—nominally the sister of a famous TOS-era character—at least came from a prior tradition of never-heretofore mentioned spare Spock siblings. The show was free to fly around and tell its own stories, and as for the handful of canon characters it did have—at least in its most-ambitious-but-messy first season—they were peripheral enough that so long as they didn't kick the bucket they'd make their future character rendezvous fairly intact as characters.

But SNW is struck down by a fatal case of prequelitis. 'We've made Nurse Chapel so dynamic and three dimensional now' yeah sure but in doing so you've also made it really weird that Nurse Chapel eventually 'evolves' into a glorified background extra eith a boring fiancee. 'We've fleshed out Doctor M'Benga!' Okay, so that he can… later agree to a demotion and be replaced by Doctor McCoy as CMO for some reason? They've done the stupid Star Wars thing, in which the entire galaxy is only five feet wide and contains the same eight people, who all know each-other. What was Uhura's career before the Enterprise? She didn't have one: she apparently spent her entire Starfleet career aboard the ship, plagued with the same Muppet Baby Syndrome that her alt-unvierse counterpart got in the Kelvinverse. Other Starfleet officers lead diverse lives: it's a plot point that Riker's career was so damaged by the fact that he spent seven years about the D that if it hadn't been for the Dominion war wiping-out half of Starfleet's officer corp ,he'd never have made captain. Good officers move around. But SNW is doing an Abrams: everyone ends up on the Enterprise and then just... stay there. Forever. (They're probably going to bring Chekov back as a cadet too so that he's placed to meet Khan in the bathroom later and thus Screenrant can write an article about how we've finally fixed that 'plot hole' that doesn't fucking matter.) There's no reason to waste these actors in such a manner. Everyone who isn't Spock and Kirk (and sometimes McCoy) on TOS fairly infamously never got a damn thing to do. When they were filming the TOS movies most of the Bridge Crew did a couple of days of filming out of a month and a half long shoot because Uhura's only role was to do some reaction shots. So why make a prequel about people these characters clearly are not: Jess Bush can't be playing Nurse Chapel because Nurse Chapel is boring. Celia Rose Gooding can't be playing Uhura: Nichelle Nichols almost quit the series because of how little Uhura ever said or did. Who are these dynamic people and what kind of story arc emerge from them becoming one-dimensional? Even pike isn't freed from this: they beat us over the head, over and over, that he cannot escape his canon fate: he is doomed to live-through The Menagerie and get all melty. Why? WHY? I don't get it. They could be free of the weight of having to connect with TOS, but they keep doubling down and its that, more than anything—more than even the hair-pulling too-contemporary dialogue—that makes SNW so frustrating.

The tiny apartment was dimly lit, as expected when the clock was nearing one a.m. But Casey had an anatomy exam to prepare for, and sleep was a luxury not afforded to the second-year med school student. As her eyelids became heavy, Jessica went into action. With a flip of a switch, the overhead fluorescent blubs blared, ripping Casey from the soothing haze she had been slipping into.

“Hey!” She protested.

“Hey, nothing!” Jess snapped back. “I’m not staying up with you for my health. We’re here to get you prepped for your exam tomorrow. Now sit up!”

Her commanding voice was a bit intimidating. If medicine didn’t work out for Jess, Casey was confident her girlfriend could have an impressive career as a drill sergeant. Still, she was too familiar with her softer side to take her commands seriously.

“No,” she protested wearily. “I’m too tired.”

Jess let out an exasperated sigh, but one look at Casey’s crooked smile and she was reduced to a marshmallow again.

“How about this,” the doe-eyed redhead smiled. “Answer one more question correctly, and we’ll call it a night.”

“Go for it!”

Jess lifted the notebook and read: “What is the name of the process of division of a somatic cell’s nucleus into two daughter nuclei?”

Casey squirmed before belting out: “Meoisis!”

“No! It’s mitosis! You know that, Case. Meiosis refers to the production of sex cells, not somatic.”

“Well, maybe I have other things on my mind,” Casey teased.

“Yeah,” Jess smirked, “Well, I’m not giving into that until I’m confident you’ll pass. I have a minimum GPA requirement to be my girlfriend, you know.”

“Oh really,” Casey chuckled. “Well, for your information, I wasn’t thinking about that! I was thinking about food! I haven’t eaten since 4:30.”

“Casey! Why didn’t you say something! You know you shouldn’t do that.”

“It wasn’t intentional,” she yawned. “I’ve been too busy.”

“Well, let’s fix that. What can we get you to eat?”

Casey picked up her phone. “There is a pizza place down on 37th that’s open 24/7. I’ll give them a call.”

“Pizza at one a.m.!” Jess scoffed. “I think not.” She headed to the small kitchen with Casey following behind.

“You won’t find anything. I haven’t been grocery shopping.”

“I’m sure there’s something,” Jess said, displeased to find mostly empty cabinets and some unhealthy options in the fridge. “Casey....” she groaned, feeling a little better when she saw a container of steel-cut oats. “Here. You can have this.”

“I could,” Casey blushed, “But... I don’t know how to make them.”

“You don’t know how to make oatmeal?” Jess’s brown eyes bulged. “It’s basically boiling!”

“Yeah, and burning. When I do it, it typically includes burning.”

Unsure if she was more amused or horrified by the reply, Jess brushed Casey’s golden locks aside and kissed her forehead to conceal both.

“I’ll tell you what. I’ll make you oatmeal, and we’ll study a few more questions. Then, we should really get some sleep.”

“All right,” Casey smiled, pulling Jess into a tight hug. “Thank you.”

“But, as soon as you pass this anatomy exam, we’re going grocery shopping, and I’m teaching you how to cook.”

“Jess, when it comes to anatomy, I’m a quick study – but cooking... that’s another animal.”

“Don’t worry, I know what I’m dealing with. We’ll start small. Grilled cheese for dinner tomorrow?”

“As long as you don’t mind burnt grilled cheese,” Casey grinned.

“Not on my watch,” Jess chuckled. “You’re lucky you’re so damned cute, MacTavish!”

Honest question but why do you think CC should've stuck to the pre-TLH stories rather than treat them as broad strokes? I feel like that'd be incredibly limiting. I get that COT was disappointing but that's because it was messy in general. I don't think sticking to the short stories would fix its issues at all.

I mean, I don't see it as limiting?? because generally speaking if an author wrote something & then published it, you would expect anything written & published in that series/universe afterwards would follow that established canon. like you would expect a sequel to follow the canon of the original, and in my opinion its the same principle here.

I do understand that a lot of time has passed since the Midnight Heir, and some things change. but my issue is more that so much changed, characters started to become unrecognisable (James and Grace mostly). For example, Jesse's death is described differently in The Midnight Heir, and it's said he died at 16, not 17 like it is in TLH. I don't really have any strong opinions about that changing; it's relatively minor & doesn't really change much. Similarly, it's hinted James might be an alcoholic, and somewhere along the line that's obviously been changed to Matthew having problems with alcohol. Again, its minor & does still appear in some capacity in the main series. I'm okay with that.

My issue more arises from things like Grace explicitly being a warrior in TMH, a very good one at that and loyal to Tatiana. Or James' self destructive behaviours and general personality in TMH (very snarky and cruel for funnies). Both are very major things that TMH establishes, and probably two of the biggest takeaways from the short story. Yet, neither of these characterisations are followed through with in the main series. It feels more like James and Grace are two completely new characters then their TMH counterparts. (I am my mother's blade & my father was cursed whereas I? I'm damned are probably the two most well-known TMH quotes and they sum up Grace & James pretty well)

The Midnight Heir was also published as it's own book outside of the Bane Chronicles. It was written and presented as being important to The Last Hours... and then it wasn't.

Also there's definitely a difference between stuff CC published on tumblr/twitter/etc and actually published content. Stuff that she said would happen on tumblr in 2018 that didn't end up happening is disappointing, but I get that. Things change, and I can see trying to follow all of that as incredibly limiting for an author. But a fully published short story is a totally different matter. because they're canon! Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy is pretty much required reading after finishing TMI & before starting TDA, so many important things happen in it (like Simon becoming a shadowhunter & parabatai with Clary for example).

obviously a lot of freedom comes from writing a book/series from scratch with no expectations, but TLH was never going to have that freedom; it's the sequel series to a prequel series 😭. That presents certain challenges, sure, but sometimes the best art comes from limitations & working with them. at least in my experience lmao.

It might be hard to believe, but I actually enjoyed ChoT for what it was (I know I complain about it a lot 😭😭). Like I couldn't put it down, and ended up rating it 4.5 stars on storygraph. My issues are more about TLH as a whole, and missed opportunities/potential that could have made to series better. wistful thinking mostly.

same anon as before but thank u for the interesting response! and i’m sorry in advance for this long venting lol, but honestly i’m just really frustrated because i think fence could be as popular and mainstream as projects like check please or heartstopper if 1) there was good marketing for it, 2) if the releasing of the issues wasn’t so puzzling, and 3) if the storyline was progressing in a natural way.

rise makes no sense in context of the novels at all and im just? if they were going to have tie-in novels they should have been used to progress character and relationship development, not create an alternate world that’s never going to be addressed. even putting aside gross mischaracterization the novels literally cannot be canon so they’re just published for? no good reason i can see? they could have prequels (seiji and jesse or harvard and aiden pre-series) or been about the team bonding/getting better at fencing, or focused on side characters that won’t get as much focus in the comics (eugene! if he’s mostly being side-lined in the comics the novels could have been his time to shine instead of him being even more sidelined. or even bobby and dante or kally and tanner). there’s definitely a lot of characters in the comics and if it was getting overwhelming the novels could have picked up that slack but they didn’t so their purpose mystifies me — there was also clearly no reason to have nicholas and seiji as pov characters in those books because srb (and i do adore all srb’s other work so this is hard for me to say) was terrible at writing them. when she was good she was good (which makes me think if there had been more editing the novels could have been better) but when she was bad she was very very bad. since she was even worse at writing eugene i guess i should be glad eugene didn’t have a pov. but seriously if the novels were mainly just haiden it could have just been haiden pov.

idk i just used to love fence so much and always noticed there was never a huge following for it, which is okay because the small fence fandom is great!! but i’ve always thought it could have had a bigger audience. there is so much promise in the first issues of fence — kings row competing against exton, the revelation of the truth about nicholas, the reactions and results from that, character development for all the main characters, relationship development for nichoji & haiden, the team actually Becoming a team & the idea of seiji nicholas and eugene being the fencing team after aiden and harvard graduate. but i feel like we’re never going to see any of that. page time is spent on things that aren’t as important instead, and then it takes ages for the next issue/volume and like you said it doesn’t feel coherent or connected to the other issues anymore. it confuses me that all the edges in fence r being sanded down and that the interesting promises in it are constantly being put off.

i’m sorry for talking about this sm i have not been successful in getting anyone into fence irl 😭 i hadn’t read rise or the novels until this month and i reread vol 1-4 before i read the new stuff and it made me very nostalgic

Hi again! lmfao dude no need to ever apologize to me for vents about Fence because I am forever pontificating about it. I agree that Fence has (or, rather, had) the potential to be really popular to a wide audience and I think you hit the nail on the head. And so much of it is just such easy fixes--like putting any effort into marketing lol or when releasing the compiled issues as volumes, giving them all distinct covers and names would have been SO helpful. Reusing the issue covers for the volumes was a mistake (and again, that's something marketing should have been all over!!). and the storyline. oh man. yeah. that ship has sailed and I've had mental breakdowns about it--but if we'd stayed true to the original concept of Fence and BOOM and Pacat put more effort into reaching a wider audience, it could have been big. Another consideration here, of course, is the content-to-hiatus ratio, which loses a ton of fans, but I maintain that if BOOM had their shit together, they could have fixed that problem too! and it's so frustrating

GOD RIGHT??? The novels came in, ruined Fence, and then aren't even actually canon because they don't actually fit in the universe??? My theory is that since Pacat is a SRB superfan, he kind of let her go overboard and realized after the novels were published and he had to move his story forward post-Disarmed that he'd fucked up giving so much freedom to her. Because they called it canon--and he still says it's '80% canon' but it couldn't have happened. So the point of the novels was basically for Pacat to read fanfiction from his favorite author of his OCs--it did nothing positive for the story, the characters, the franchise, or the fans. and LITERALLY!!! I've always thought doing a prequel for the tie-ins made more sense. Like following the fencing team with Harvard, Aiden, Kally, and Tanner would have been so fun, or focusing on Kally and Tanner or Bobby and Dante would have been fun and would have left room for actual plot progression!! It was pure selfishness on the authors' part to do the novels how they did them. And if Pacat would father fangirl over SRB than write a meaningful story, that's his right, but it still bugs me that there was clearly no thought given to the consequences of the novels. So instead of dealing with them, we ignore them and pretend that they're still '80% canon' to make ourselves feel better for our oopsie. hahaaa I have nothing nice to say about SRB or her writing. I don't think she got anything right in Fence--except for hinting Eugesse, which you know she only did because she knew it was popular in the fandom and she wanted the hype and baited us with it lmfao But! I've always had issues with her even before she touched Fence--her blatant sexism in In Other Lands was disturbing to me when I read it (shaming and looking down on feminine traits isn't Woke or Revolutionary just because you assigned those traits to men in your "badass feminist society" and had all the women be grossly sexist and predatory) so it's not just me being an asshole because she ruined my favorite thing in the world <3 But I know she's very beloved among her fans and I'm sorry that she failed you in Fence when you love her other works so much. If there was one mercy from the novels, it was the lack of a Eugene POV even if it further proves he's not really part of the team/a main character...unfortunately that's a fair trade jkdfah

I always thought Fence deserved a bigger following than it ever got--and maybe having a bigger fanbase and more money being thrown at it would have helped BOOM commit to buying enough ahead to let Pacat and Jo actually work on it consistently and put out content more regularly. It really was setting itself up to be so fun and full of tropes the gays LOVE. i mean, sports 'manga' that's actually queer? All the fun tropes with rivals and 'becoming a team'? The classic character archetypes used smartly and effectively? I genuinely think it would have appealed to all the people who love Check Please and Heartstopper and Yuri on Ice. And it still does, I guess, but I feel like if Fence gets popular now, I'd be a bit sad to see all that love centered around a version of Fence I don't like (but that is pure selfishness lmfao I fully admit it). I just so love/d all the edges and conflicts in Fence and it's sad to see them sanded down in canon and resolved of screen.

I’m kind of impressed that it’s almost half a million, but also just how much I wrote in the last two years after not writing/publishing anything at all in 2021.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Currently, Star Trek: TNG and PIC. Before that, the fandom I wrote the most for was Once Upon a Time. Everything else was just two or three fics, at least on AO3. I’ve been writing fic for decades so there are A LOT of fics and fandoms that have been lost to time. (Random shout out to Battlestar Galactica, which I wrote for back in my LiveJournal days!)

I’m going to do two sets here, because my All Years one are all OUAT fics no one cares about anymore, and I have enough fics published from this year to have a top five of 2023 so my current fandom has something to read that will make sense to them lol.

It Happened Once… - a Evil Captain Charming crackfic that honestly has way more kudos than I expected. This one for some reason sees a lot of traction still. It was originally supposed to have a just-as-cracky sequel, but I never finished it.

A Loaded God Complex - ah, Golden Queen, my guilty pleasure OUAT ship. Set in s6, this was the start of a set of one-shots that took the romantic Golden Queen that finally blossomed in that season and ran with it. Mostly involves a lot of dark power struggles masking as sex. Aptly all titled after Fall Out Boy lyrics, if I say so myself.

The Computation - a little Dragon Queen one-shot I did, short and sweet. Honestly surprised it’s on here, because it’s not my best work by any means.

peace - my Picard/Crusher fic set directly after the epilogue in the PIC s3 finale. I was pleasantly surprised by how much attention this fic has gotten. I had suspected I would end up writing a prequel, but I never thought it’d turn into the four part series that it has. I hope everyone still enjoys it.

Mastermind - the first Star Trek: TNG fic I wrote since I was a teenager watching TNG for the first time! This was entirely thanks to my friend Jess, if I’m remembering correctly? She prompted me to rewrite the season 2 episode “Manhunt” with Beverly in it instead of Pulaski, because my favorite toxic trait of Beverly’s is her jealousy.

what could’ve been, should’ve been (you) - my PIC s3 Picard/Crusher masterpiece. I got the idea for this by the end of episode two, struggled with it as the season went on, and then finally wrangled it into something that I truly love.

in the business of misery - jealous!Beverly makes a reappearance in this s4 TNG fic that fixes QPid. Because fuck Vash, okay.

trustfall - dlfshfsl this fic. If what could’ve been, should’ve been (you) is my PIC masterpiece, I think trustfall is my TNG one. I disparage it a bit by talking as if it’s shameless smut, but honestly I’m quite proud of it as a character piece as Picard and Beverly navigate a new relationship and new dynamics across 11k of words. Set in TNG s3, post-Sarek.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I try to! I genuinely appreciate comments, because I find it quite difficult to give them myself, so as a part of trying to be better I also try to respond to comments. I’m an awkward turtle, though, so I feel like I usually end up babbling about things people probably did not care about. If I don’t babble, I usually just leave a short and sweet “thanks for reading” that I hope doesn’t come across as insincere.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Probably Winter Song, a OUAT fic I actually wrote for a holiday fandom advent calendar we did back in the OQ fandom. It’s a wedding fic, and smutty as is my usual, but it’s got a heavy dose of sadness. I sort of tried to make it hopeful in the end, because ending a Christmas fic with no hope felt like I was killing Christmas.

Another OUAT fic I wrote, A Spark to Ignite, was also really angsty, now that I think about it and doesn’t involve any character death (canon or otherwise). It was supposed to have a part two that fixed it but I never wrote it.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Oooh. I’ll be polite and not take “happiest ending” to be dirty, even though I could list SO MANY fics for that. 

bound to break, my Greatest Showman AU that I wrote for Outlaw Queen (OUAT fandom, again) ends pretty cleancut happily after having some angst in the middle. And it’s technically a multi chapter fic, though it’s short lol.

I Know, I Know, I Know (I Feel the Same as You) as my Outlaw Queen college AU always makes me happy when I think about the ending.

8. Do you get hate on fic?

Not really. I’ve gotten some comments that were definitely unnecessary and mean-spirited, but nothing major. Truthfully, I’m not nearly a big enough deal to get hate.

9. Do you write smut?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Sorry, nothing against anyone who doesn’t, but writing smut is basically all I do. It’s what I was known for in my previous fandom. It’s the thing I find the easiest to write, and secretly I suffer from a lot of insecurity because I feel like it’s the only thing I actually write very well. For a bit, in the OUAT fandom, I felt a little like a smut jukebox and it was entirely my own fault. But I wrote a lot of fun things and ultimately I enjoy writing smut.

10. Do you write crossovers?

I definitely have in my distant fic writing past, but nothing recently. OUAT almost counts as a canon crossover, given the story of it.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not to my knowledge.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

No.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, not really. My great network of fic writing friends have definitely provided excellent guidance and suggestions that have been enormously helpful, and that’s the closest I’ve gotten.

14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Lol I feel like this is impossible to answer? My current hyperfixation is Picard/Crusher, and that’s a ship I’ve loved for a very, very long time. So maybe it’s that. But I’ll always hold a place in my heart for Outlaw Queen and Dragon Outlaw Queen (especially for the latter, since I wrote SO MUCH of it). Adama/Roslin is my OTP from back in my LiveJournal days that will also be special to me.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?

Funnily enough, it’s not a Star Trek one, even though that’s my current fandom. The WIP I really, really wish I had finished is Where the Burn Marks Form. I had SUCH PLANS for Dragon Outlaw Queen and Calida and got too intimidated by what I wanted to do to actually write it. Sometimes I think it’s for the best though, because I think any remaining DOQ fans might have been sad about what all was supposed to happen (though it was always supposed to have a happy ending).

16. What are your writing strengths?

Smut. Once upon a time (lol), threesomes in particular. Ironically I used to struggle a bit with writing just two people having sex after writing so much Dragon Outlaw Queen, but I find it not as difficult anymore.

Character voices. Not to brag, but something I pride myself on is getting a character’s voice right. It’s something I work very hard at, and stress a lot over, but generally feel like I succeed.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Literally anything else? You want long, detailed plotty fic? Sorry, can I interest you in a smutty one shot instead. You want something angsty? Not really my style. You want a well-plotted completely alternate universe fic? LOL please, I write fic so I don’t have to world build. Canon compliant or canon divergence or bust, baby.

I write on vibes, and I’m sure sometimes that is blatantly obvious. I have the vaguest of plans whenever I sit down to write something, and I go from there. Probably someday I should try to have actual concrete plans and not just “hmm what if i do this” vibes.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Lol okay let me piss off the entire Picard/Crusher fandom real quick: IN MY OPINION, it is annoying to write dialogue in another language unless it’s like… blatantly obvious what you’re saying. Very rarely is there a point to it, and it can be easily sidestepped by “blah blah blah,” he said in French. Basic phrases, sure. Pet names, have at it! Several sentences in another language?

Look I don’t speak French. If you put French in your fic, I’m having to pull out Google translate and heaven help me if it’s dirty talk, because now Google is translating “I want to fuck you,” to English from different languages (French, it’s French, I didn’t have this problem in my other fandoms). I wish if people were going to do that, they’d at least make a footnote (I would 100% be willing to find out how to format it) and!!! I think you can still use html to set it up so that when you hover over text, it gives you a little mouseover text where you can have the translation!!! That way I don’t have to one: try and scroll down to the end notes hoping for a translation and thus breaking my immersion as I scroll back up, or at least if it’s a footnote it’ll have an anchor taking me back to the sentence in question.

Sorry rant over, everyone please continue writing however you wish, I will deal. And honestly if you use the same French phrases enough I’ll learn them anyway, so it won’t matter in the long run. This absolutely is not a deal breaker for me when it comes to reading a fic, it’s just a pet peeve.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Um, probably Harry Potter but that is my long-forgotten days.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

trustfall as mentioned above for Star Trek: TNG. With trustfall, it was maybe the second or third fic I wrote for Star Trek (I mean, at least not counting back when I was in my early teens writing for it) and I really think it's just some of my best work? It's a smut fic, but I think there's really, really good character exploration in it. It easily could have just been a fic where Beverly soft dommes Jean-Luc and all you get is that final scene, but I think the build up really makes it worth it. idk idk I have a lot of feels for this fic lolol.

Wishes in the Dark for OUAT. My key party in Storybrooke fic!! aka my Awkward David fic. I think this is one of the best fics I've written, period, for a lot of the same reasons as above. It's 30k, it's got Dragon Outlaw Queen, but more importantly it's got David lusting after Regina and Mal and getting the chance to sleep with them with Snow's permission... and then also Robin joins in and David realizes some things about himself. There's a whoooole side quest of things that was supposed to happen after this story that I never wrote. It's also got some really tender Evil Charming, because I couldn't resist.

Connie's Epic & Awesome Baby Shower.

This was a prompt given by an anon. I love these prompts cause it really has me writing a lot. Anyways the prompt was a prequel to my previous story, showing Connie's baby shower. Side note, Jesse is quickly becoming my favorite person to write. He really allows my sassiness to come through. Anyways, Enjoy!

“Why did Connie send you with me?” Charlie asked Jesse.

The two were on their way to the airport to pick up Dwayne, Luis, Kenny and Russ. They were all flying in for Connie’s baby shower.

Julie arrived last week and was staying at Adam and Charlie’s because they have a huge kitchen.

“Because Adam is better at decorating.” Jesse reminded him.

Adam had stayed back to help Guy and Connie with the last of the decorations. Charlie loved Jesse but he also really loved Adam.

“He is not.” Charlie countered.

Jesse laughed. “Your house says different.”

“That's not fair, I let him decorate cause I chose the house.” Charlie objected.

“Uh huh and it’s not because you would cover the house in Duck colors and Hockey posters.” Jesse commented.

“Is it because he’s gay?” Charlie wondered, “Cause that’s stereotypical.”

“No it’s because he’s a cake-eater and grew up with the finer things.” Jesse argued.

“Fair point.” Charlie conceded.

“Besides, just because you’re Bi doesn’t make you any less in love with cake-eater.” Jesse teased.

“I can’t help it, he stole my heart a long time ago.” Charlie lamented

“More like checked you into the boards and took it from you.” Jesse said with a laugh.

Charlie laughed too.

“Yeah he was a punk when he was on the hawks.” Charlie agreed.

“Come to find out he is just very affected by his surroundings.” Jesse insisted, “After not being around asses, we learned he’s 100% an introvert.”

“I’m glad, it means he feels safe around us.” Charlie replied wistfully.

Jesse rolled his eyes and pushed Charlie’s shoulder softly.

“Alright loverboy, reel it in.” Jesse teased. “Your pupils are gonna turn to actual hearts if you keep lamenting about your boyfriend.”

“Sorry Jesse,” Charlie said chuckling.

“9 years together and you’re still this mushy.” Jesse observed, “You must love him.”

“I do.” Charlie replied with a smile.

“You’re worse than Connie and Guy.” Jesse deadpanned.

“How dare you.” Charlie replied, faking hurt.

Jesse laughed and shoved him as they pulled up to the airport. The pair parked and took off to find their friends.

Kenny and Luis were coming in from Miami. After graduation they agreed to move in with Luis’ mom while they figured out what they wanted to use their degrees for.

Thankfully the Mendoza’s house was huge so they had plenty of privacy and had extra space should a fellow duck need to crash.

They were very happy just being together. Kenny had taken a job teaching figure skating and Luis helped his uncle fix up cars.

Dwayne was coming in from Austin. He had recently taken a job at an all boys school. He taught math and coached hockey. In high school he had been tested for a learning disability.

It came back he had ADHD, which explained why he seemed spacy sometimes. He was able to get treatment. He excelled in math and was great with kids so the teaching job was perfect.

Russ was coming in from Los Angeles. After school he went back to help his brother take care of their dad. Russ’ dad had suffered a minor stroke their senior year.

It took all the ducks to convince Russ not to drop out and head home when the news came through. However, once he had his diploma he was booking the plane home.

Thankfully his dad was able to recover. However, Russ had gotten used to living back home and agreed when his father asked him to move back in as his caregiver.

Along with taking care of his dad, Russ started doing shows at his local comedy club. With his wit and dry humor he was a fast hit.

He can go big time but Russ prefers to travel the LA area. He has a residence in a few clubs and casinos. It keeps him close to home and he gets paid to do what he loves.

“Who is arriving first?” Charlie asked Jesse.

“Russ should be here first, then Dwayne.” Jesse explained. “Then Kenny and Luis.”

“They’re all still on time?” Charlie asked, looking over the flight screens.

“Yep, they should all be here in time for the shower.” Jesse replied.

“Perfect,” Charlie stated. “Connie will skin us if we’re late to the shower.”

Jesse laughed but nodded.

“Come on, this way to Russ’ terminal.” Jesse instructed.

Charlie followed easily. It was about 11:15 am Minnesota time. Russ’ flight should have landed at 11:10 am. So Charlie and Jesse had made it just in time to meet him.

The pair scanned the area around the departure doors. Jesse spotted Russ first.

“Hey loudmouth!” Jesse cupped his hands and yelled.

Russ laughed and spotted Jesse. Hurrying over, he pulled Jesse into a loose headlock.

Jesse laughed and pushed him off before the two shared a handshake.

“We missed you, hollywood.” Jesse confessed.

“I wish I could say the same.” Russ jokes. “Damn, it’s freezing up here, who decided to have a shower in March.”

“Russ, it’s Minnesota.” Charlie replied sarcastically, “It’s cold like 9 months out of the year.”

“Which means you had 3 months where you had suitable weather.” Russ jokes.

Jesse snorts.

“It’s not our fault Connie is due in July.” He retorted.

“No but I will still blame you.” Russ replied.

Jesse and Charlie slugged Russ softly. Russ laughed and pulled Charlie into a hug. He did miss his friends, even if he would never admit that.

“Am I the first one?” He asked as the trio moved to retrieve Russ’ bags.

“Yeah but Dwayne should get in around 11:30.” Charlie replied.

“Then Kenny and Luis should arrive at 11:45.” Jesse added.

“So you got lucky and only had to collect 4 of us?” Russ teased.

“Well Julie got in last week, she wanted to be early so she could have enough time to make the cake for the party.” Charlie explained. Russ nodded in understanding.

“And Averman insisted he go down and pick up Goldberg.” Jesse admitted. Russ winced.

“That car ride had got to be insane.” He commented.

“Yeah, we didn’t argue with him too much.” Jesse confessed, causing Russ to snort.

“And Fulton and Portman work together so they are coming together.” Charlie noted.

“How are the construction jobs treating them?” Russ asked.

“Pretty good, it’s Minnesota so they’re always needed.” Jesse explained.

Russ nodded in understanding. He hasn’t lived in Minnesota for long but he saw how the winter affected the buildings.

“Is Bombay showing up?” Russ asked hesitantly.

Jesse frowned and shook his head.

“Connie invited him but he was in the middle of training his new recruits and couldn’t come.” Jesse explained.

Russ frowned, their former coach had been around less and less as the years went on. Charlie took it the hardest. He still loved their former coach but he was definitely a touchy subject.

Russ cleared his throat to clear the air.

“So, what is the plan while we wait for the others?” He asked Charlie.

Charlie smiled. “Well we can send you to Connie’s in a taxi or you can wait here while the others arrive.”

Russ scoffed. “Do you think I’d miss the insanity that is a Hall-Conway car ride?”

Charlie rolled his eyes. “It isn’t that exciting.”

“Watching you and Jesse argue about the new NFL draft or whatever else is free entertainment.” Russ teased. “It’s a good thing Jesse is straight cause he would definitely be competition for Adam.”

Jesse scoffed and shoved his friend playfully.

“Oh shut up.” Charlie sassed.

Russ laughed and led the pair to the baggage claim. Once Russ had gotten his suitcase and was settled into the waiting area of the airport's Caribou. Jesse and Charlie hurried to their next destination.

Dwayne’s plane was arriving at the gate on the far end of the airport. So Charlie and Jesse had to sprint to make it in time. The two came to a stop in front of the terminal. Both panting heavily. Their heads shot up at a familiar southern drawl.

“Yeehaw!” Dwayne explained. “Is the Jesse Hall and Charlie Conway I see!” The cowboy smiled and sauntered over to the pair.

“Hey, Tex.” Charlie said with a smile pulling Dwayne into a hug. Among the Ducks, Dwayne definitely gave the best hugs.

Dwayne hugged back tightly causing Charlie to laugh.

“I missed you too, Dwayne.” Charlie said, his words tight due to the loss of oxygen.

“Stop hogging him, Charlie.” Jesse sniggered.

Dwayne smiled and let go of Charlie only to pull Jesse into an equally tight hug. He loved Texas but nothing beat being among his friends again.

After a moment Dwayne pulled back.

“Thanks, I think you cracked my back.” Jesse said with a smile.

Dwayne let out a chuckle. “Who is all here?”

“At the airport or in Minnesota?” Charlie questioned.

“Both.” Dwayne replied.

“Russ is here and almost everyone else is in the area.” Charlie explained. “I think Averman and Goldberg are an hour out still.”

“Who decided that pair was a good idea to travel together?” Dwayne questioned, legitimately concerned.

Jesse chuckled. “Better them than us, cowboy.”

Dwayne thought for a second and nodded.

“Let’s grab your bags and we can drop you off with Russ.” Charlie explained. “We still have to grab Kenny and Luis.”

Dwayne nodded in agreement and followed Charlie and Jesse to baggage claim. Thankfully it took less time to grab Dwayne’s luggage and get him settled.

Russ hugged the Texan and they began talking immediately. This allowed Charlie and Jesse to step away and head to their final terminal.

Thankfully this time they were early. The flight in from Miami was the least busy. Most Floridians do not want to bear the cold. So it was easy to spot Kenny and Luis.

The two men exited the terminal hand in hand. They were discussing something softly so Charlie spotted them first.

“Kenny! Luis!” He shouted, waving his hands around.

The pair looked up and smiled. They strided over to Jesse and Charlie. No once did they relinquish the other’s hand.

“Hey guys.” Kenny said with a smile. “It’s great to be back.”

Jesse smiled and pulled Kenny into a hug.

“I’m sure it’s nice to be around others that aren’t Luis.” He joked, cradling Kenny dramatically.

“Yeah I hope you’ve been taking care of our precious Kenny.” Charlie added.

Luis stared at them exasperated.

“Nice to know which one of us is the favorite.” He commented dryly.

Charlie and Jesse laughed. Charlie pulled Luis into a hug and slapped him on the back. Luis smiled and hugged back. They soon switched so Kenny could hug Charlie and Jesse could give Luis a noogie.

Luis laughed and pushed off Jesse. He took Kenny’s hand again.

“So, what’s we miss?” Kenny asked.

“Not much, Russ and Dwayne are here chilling at Caribou.” Jesse explained. “You’re the last to arrive.”

“Cool, that means we can head out right after we grab our bags.” Luis said with a smile.

“It wouldn’t be so bad to wait.” Kenny argued. “I liked the Minneapolis airport.”

“Well thankfully you will have time to take in the airport when we drop you off for your return trip.” Charlie joked.

Kenny laughed. “Fair point, shall we?”

Luis nodded and the couple followed Jesse and Charlie to retrieve their bags. After they had secured their luggage. The group made their way to retrieve the last two.

Dwayne screamed Kenny’s name and pulled the shorter boy into a hug. Spinning him before setting him down, leaving Kenny slightly disheveled but sporting a large smile. Dwayne moved on to Luis, giving him a strong hug.

“I missed you guys.” Dwayne confessed.

Although all the Ducks were like family. The newer Ducks shared a special bond with each other.

“We missed you too, Dwayne.” Luis said with a smile.

“Kenny Wu, is that a ring on your finger?” Russ hollered.

Four pairs of eyes zeroed in on Kenny’s left hand. On his ring finger sat a simple silver band with a small ruby embedded in it.

Kenny blushed and played with the ring.

“We didn’t want to take attention away from Connie.” He confessed.

The questions were immediate. Kenny could barely register who was talking.

“When did this happen?”

“Did you pick out the ring or did Luis?

“Why didn’t you call us!”

“Is it real?”

Luis turned and glared softly at Russ.

“Yes, it’s real!” He said annoyed.

“Just making sure.” Russ teased. Luis rolled his eyes.

“We didn’t want a big deal about it.” Luis explained.

“Yes, because asking someone to marry you is a common, everyday thing.” Charlie replied sarcastically.

Kenny snorted.

“Luis proposed a week ago.” Kenny recalled, “He picked out the ring and it was so close to the baby shower we wanted to wait to tell everyone.”

“Our little Kenny is growing up.” Charlie said, wiping an invisible tear.

Kenny shoved him. “Get real.”

Charlie laughed. The small group congratulated the couple. Jesse turned to conversation back to their current situation.

“Alright so Charlie parked in tower C.” He explained as the group started walking to the car. “It isn’t far, once we get the car filled up, we are heading straight to the baby shower.”

“Afterwards, we’ll drop you off at your hotels.” Charlie added.

The group nodded in understanding.

“I just hope Charlie is a better driver than Averman.” Luis teased.

“Well I haven’t died yet.” Jesse replied cheekily.

“Hey!” Charlie shouted. The group broke into laughter that lasted all the way to the car. Jesse and Charlie loaded up the trunk. While their friends picked their seats. Charlie had an SUV so the car seated them all comfortably.

Dwayne convinced Russ to sit in the far back with him. So Russ couldn’t mess with Jesse while they were driving. Luis and Kenny took the middle two seats.

Jesse and Charlie reclaimed their seats up front and Charlie started the short ride back to Connie and Guy’s.

By the time the small group had arrived back to the site of the baby shower, the place was practically covered in balloons and streamers.

Connie didn’t care for the traditional pink and blue so everything was Ducks colors. The Green, white and gold seemed the perfect for this celebration.

Adam was hanging the final banner when Charlie walked through the door.

“Should you be up there?” He asked

Adam rolled his eyes.

“I am not gonna hurt myself by putting up a banner.” He argued.

“You say that as if you aren’t the accident prone one.” Charlie said with a smile.

“Most of my injuries were not self-inflicted.” Adam retorted. “There.”

Adam pulled back and checked if the banner was straight. When he was satisfied with his work he moved to climb down the stepladder.

“You know if I wanted to be mother-henned, maybe I should be dating Casey.” Adam teased.

“My mother is too good for you.” Charlie replied, pulling Adam into his arms.

“And yet you aren’t?” Adam said with a laugh.

“No, I am just right for you.” Charlie retorted.

“You’re a sap.” Adam replied but didn’t argue when Charlie pulled him into a chaste kiss.

The pair had been together since they were 17 but every kiss still felt like their first. They always made Adam’s legs feel weak. He loved them so much.

“Alright, lovebirds.” Jesse said, nudging the pair apart. “Leave some room for jesus.”

“We are two men in a relationship.” Adam replied dryly, “Jesus was never involved.”

Jesse laughed and went into the kitchen. Julie was finishing up the food spread. Her large beautifully decorated cake was the centerpiece.

“It looks great, Jules,” Jesse said, earning a smile from Julie.

“Can you watch the cake?” She asked, “If Averman or Goldberg try to sneak a piece early I am dragging them back to New York with me and they’re on dish duties for two weeks.”

“That sounds more like a punishment for you.” Jesse remarked. Julie sighed, exasperated.

“Connie wanted the cake to be the gender reveal and I refuse to let them ruin it.” She explained.

“I will watch them.” Jesse promised.

“Thank you.” Julie replied. “Where are the others?”

“Guy wrangled Dwayne, Luis and Russ into setting up chairs.” Jesse explained, “Charlie and Adam are in the living room making heart eyes at each other and Kenny went to wake Connie.”

“I’m glad Guy was able to convince her to rest before the party.” Julie confessed. “It’s gonna take a lot out of her.”

Jesse nodded in agreement. “Do you need any help?”

Julie shook her head. “I am just about done.”

Julie put the final touches on a set of cupcakes she had baked. She smiled and set the treats down with the rest of the food.

“There, all set.” Julie said, smiling and wiping her hands on her apron.

Jesse smiled, “You do great work.”

“I know.” Julie said with a smile.

“Oh Julie, it’s beautiful.” A voice said from the door.

Jesse and Julie turned to see Kenny and Connie come into the kitchen. Connie had her hands on her small baby bump and Kenny was holding her arm.

“I agree, Jules, this is great.” Kenny said with a smile. Julie beamed at the compliments.

“It was the least I could do.” Julie replied. “You’re having the first in the next generation of Ducks.”

“Well it would have been me or you.” Connie jokes.

“Yeah well I am nowhere near wanting that.” Julie replied which caused Connie to laugh.

Julie pulls Connie and Kenny into a hug.

“You’re gonna be a great mom, Connie.” Julie stated.

“Well, it helps to have a huge support group.” Connie replied.

The trio pulled back and Julie caught sight of Kenny’s ring.

“Luis finally proposed?” She asked smartly.

Kenny blushed and Connie laughed.

“Yeah, last week, they didn’t tell us because of the shower.” She reported.

Julie laughed. “You guys aren’t good at hiding things.”

“No, the Ducks are just too observant.” Kenny argued.

“Only a few of them.” Jesse retorted. “Have to make up for the rest of us.”

The group laughed loudly. Connie held on to Kenny so she didn’t fall over.

“What’s so funny?” Guy asked entering the kitchen.

“Oh nothing, you know we can laugh at anything.” Connie reassured him.

“That is true.” Guy agreed, “Are you ready, the shower is set to start in about 5 minutes.”

Connie nodded and separated from Julie and Kenny to take Guy’s hand.

“I am ready.” She confirmed, “This is gonna be a blast.”

Guy nodded in agreement and led his wife out to the living room. Chairs had been set up in a circle around a large arm chair where Connie would sit. All the Ducks had taken their seats. Adam and Charlie sat to the right of Connie. A chair between them and Connie where Connie’s mother sat.

Next to them Luis sat, Kenny slipped into the seat next to him and took his hand. Russ, Dwayne, Portman and Fulton took up the next four seats.

Fulton and Portman had arrived shortly after Charlie and Jesse. Julie took the second seat to Connie’s left. This allowed Guy to sit next to his wife. The only two Ducks missing were Averman and Goldberg.

However, soon the sound of hollering was heard from the door as Goldberg and Averman all but crashed through the door. Connie laughed at the pair.

Goldberg came over and hugged Connie, putting a large gift in the pile at her feet. Averman waved hello and took a seat next to Luis. His eyes noted the ring, Averman wiggled his eyebrows at Luis. Luis chose to ignore this.

“Thank you all for coming.” Connie said, smiling. It was nice to be surrounded by her family again.

Guy cleared his throat. “So, we were thinking first we could open presents and then eat.” He explained. “ The Connie and I will cut the cake Julie made.”

“And if anyone touches the cake beforehand I know where the knives are.” Julie threatened, eyeing Goldberg and Averman. The pair gulped and nodded.

Connie laughed. “Alright, so which gift should I open first?”

After a short argument the group decided Connie should open Adam and Charlie’s gift first. Charlie and Adam had picked out a beautiful blue baby blanket and matching pillow. It was a light enough color that it could be used for either gender. Connie gushed over it and thanked them.

She continued on. The gifts were all lovely. Jesse had gifted her a baby’s ducks jersey. Goldberg gave her a “I have awesome uncles” shirt. Connie rolled her eyes at this but thanked him. Averman gave her a gift card to a local spa for when the baby was a little older. It was an unexpectedly generous gift.

Russ gave her a small pile of baby clothes. He wanted her to be prepared. Luis and Kenny gave her a grocery gift card. Guy appreciated that gift the most. Dwayne gave Connie a small pile of bibs, he had sewn them himself. Portman gave her a large radio for the baby's room. He also gave her a few of his favorite CDs for when the kid got older. Fulton had made Connie a large, wooden toybox and added a few toys as well. Julie’s gift was the food. Connie thanked everyone and the party moved to the kitchen to get food.

The Ducks sat and ate and caught up. Luis and Kenny took this moment to announce their engagement after some encouragement from Connie. They were met with cheers and wolf whistles. After everyone had their fill of food, Charlie helped Julie carry out the cake.

“Now, we wanted to do a gender reveal but we didn’t want anything cheesy so Julie suggested we do this cake.” Connie explained.

“So, we’re gonna cut into it and the color will reveal the gender of our baby.” Guy added.

“Ok, so cut it already.” Russ prodded.

The couple laughed and took the knife. Together they cut into the 5 layer dessert and pulled out a slice of dyed blue cake. The Ducks cheered happily and congratulated Connie and Guy.

Julie took over cutting and serving the rest of the cake. After that the party winded down. The Ducks did stay over to help clean up before taking their leave.

Guy pulled Connie close after the last guest had left and kissed his wife. It was times like this he remembered how grateful he was for her and their friends.

Do you guys remember how fucked up the Umbara arc from the Clone Wars series is? Like, General Krell was sending Anakin’s troops into battle with horrible plans, causing way more casualties than necessary. And the 501st was like “This is horrible, he’s going to get us all killed, we can’t listen to him.” And Rex was conflicted with following orders or helping his men.

And then that whole thing with Fives, Jesse, and Hardcase where they disobeyed orders and blew up the supply ship to cut off the weapons from the Umbaran capital and Hardcase sacrificed himself, so they only lost one soldier instead of many from Krell’s suicide mission? And Krell’s response was to have Fives and Jesse court-martialed and executed? Like dude. They saved so many clones and cut off supplies, helping Obi-Wan’s forces take control of the capital.

Then he decided to skip the trial and go straight to the execution, and the clones had to fire on their brothers. Except they purpisefully mussed and decided that they couldn’t really listen to/trust Krell at all anymore.

Then Krell sent the 501st out to fight the Umbarans, warning them that they would be dressed like clones. And they got into this battle, with casualties on both sides, ending when Rex saw one of their “enemies” dead on the ground, his helmet sort of off, and he saw that he was a clone, and they were shooting at another platoon. So he took his helmet off and was running through the crossfire yelling “Don’t shoot! They’re clones!” And then he took the helmet off of a clone from the platoon they were fighting to show everyone. And it turned out Krell sent them to kill each other.

So they joined together and freed Fives and Jesse, then staged a mutiny against Krell. But ge put up a good fight, having two double-bladed lightsabers and all, killing many more clones. And when they eventually caught him, they realized the Umbarans were coming back to reclaim their airbase. They decided they couldn’t risk keeping Krell alive, so they went to execute him. And Rex couldn’t do it, so the one clone who had always blindly followed Krell shot him. And it turned out Krell was a Sith sympathizer who saw the future and was going to join the Empire when it came into existence.

Like that four episode arc was so effed up, for a show only rated PG. Honestly, that rating should be higher, because in the final episode of the arc, Krell picked up a clone and snapped his spine over his knee. Plus all the killing and dark subject matter.

I know this isn’t a quote, but I just needed to rant.
