Daddy’s Girl
Premise: A poignant moment between father and daughter after the poison attack.
Book: Open Heart Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Cassie Valentine); feat. Robert Valentine (OC) Rating/Category: Teen. Angsty Fluff. Words: 1,510
A/N: Submission for @choicesjanuary2024 day 16 prompt "relationships". I'm also using @choicesflashfics week 69, prompt 3
Tumblr media
Robert Valentine had a plan. He’d graduate from college, sail around the world and then settle down to live out the Valentine legacy of working in the family business. His father also had a plan, and it featured only two of the three items on his list.
Unable to say no to the strict man who’d raised him, Robert gave up his dream of feeling the wind in his hair on the open seas. A chance encounter in Greenwich during summer break from Wharton further altered his plans.
A year later, he was married to a woman who not only shared his love of adventure but actively encouraged his carefree side. Becoming parents hadn’t been part of the plan, at least not so soon after getting married. But fate had other ideas.
As they stared down at the two tiny humans behind the glass of the nursery at Newport Hospital, he gently hooked one arm around Olivia’s waist. The boy was restless while the girl was asleep, their hands lightly touching.
“They’re beautiful, aren’t they?” Olivia murmured, still tired, her head resting on his shoulder.
Even though they’d known Olivia was carrying multiples, seeing them was a different reality. On top of that, the twins had arrived a month early. They still hadn’t landed on names or completed the nursery in the townhouse they’d bought near his work.
“We should come up with appropriate names,” he said quietly after a while. “Can’t keep calling them Thing One and Thing Two.”
“Imagine the shock on our parents’ faces if we put that on their birth certificates,” Olivia teased, her eyes swimming with laughter.
Robert chuckled, folding his wife in his arms. Being a father would change him; it was inevitable. But he didn’t have to give up his dreams, just adjust them for two more.
Now, all these years later, Robert watched his daughter’s even breathing as she lay sleeping on the hospital bed and wished he could turn back time to when she was a baby, tucked safe and sound in his arms.
The last two days had been harrowing and emotional. The panicked call from his son in the middle of the night, the long flight to Boston from Paris, the uncertainty about Cassie’s condition, and the anger when he and Olivia were denied entrance into the hospital.
But that was all over now, he sighed in relief. His daughter was no longer on death’s door. It would take time, but he’d been assured she would recover. If he thought Cassie wouldn’t be pissed at him for doubting her precious Dr. Ramsey, Robert would’ve whisked her off to the best specialists in the world for a second opinion.
Lost in thought, he didn’t notice Cassie’s eyelids fluttering as she slowly awoke. But he heard her whimpers and the sound of sheets rustling. He was out of the chair and by her bedside seconds before her eyes drifted open.
“Hey, kiddo,” Robert smiled softly, taking her hand.
“Daddy?” Cassie said in a confused tone, her voice reed thin and somewhat raspy.
She struggled to sit up, and he placed a steadying hand on her back while pressing a control button on the guardrail to raise the bed’s head. He adjusted the pillow to support her neck and poured a glass of water when she started coughing.
“Better?”
When she nodded, Robert set the glass down on the table. He turned away to drag the visitor’s chair closer to the bed and sat down, covering her hand with his palm. They smiled at each other, matching green eyes.
“You haven’t called me kiddo since I was ten,” she commented, smiling despite the sudden discomfort under her sternum.
The machines she was hooked up to briefly beeped before settling down as the pain subsided. Robert stroked the back of her hand with his thumb.
“Old habits,” he said, taking his eyes off the flashing numbers on the monitor. “You haven’t called me Daddy since you and Max decided that word was for babies.”
“Well, I feel weak as a baby right now, so that could be the reason,” she joked, and then tears filled her eyes, dripping down her cheeks. “I was so scared I’d never see you or Mom again. ”
Robert leaned in and wiped the tears away with his fingers, shushing her the way he used to when she was five and had a nightmare.
“When I was in that room, all I could think of was the last time you took us sailing,” she continued in a watery voice. “It was just before I moved to Boston. The fresh ocean breeze tossing my hair, the taste of salt on our lips as water crashed around us. Max cursing as the unruly waves rocked the boat and almost tipped us over. Your laughter booming in the wind. That feeling of truly being alive.”
Leaving the chair, he sat on the side of the bed and folded her into his arms, mindful of the drip lines and wires.
“You are alive, Cassie honey,” he whispered over and over as sobs wracked her body, and she burrowed her face into his chest. “You’re here, safe in my arms.”
Eventually, the storm passed, and he returned to his seat. The comforting silence stretched, broken only by the beeps and hums of the machines.
“Where’s Mom?”
“At the hotel, hopefully getting some rest,” Robert explained. “She barely slept these last couple of days. Max, too. Your brother pretends to be invincible, but he was running on fumes by the time we got here.”
“Maybe if he drank coffee every now and then,” Cassie said with a wry twist of her lips.
Robert shook his head in amusement and chuckled, well familiar with his children’s opposing views on this matter and their needling of each other as a result.
“Have you seen Ethan?”
“Yes, he dropped by an hour ago to check on you,” Robert replied, hiding his disquiet at how Cassie’s eyes locked on the closed door, waiting for the other man to walk in.
He steepled his index fingers under his chin as he sprawled on the chair, stretching his legs out under the bed. “I take it you’re both still hiding your relationship?”
Robert was glad Cassie at least had the good sense to look abashed. He wasn’t happy with the turn of events, but his wife was convinced it was the real deal and they should give the couple space to work it out. Olivia’s instincts were flawless, which was the only reason he exercised restraint.
“What do you think of him?” she asked, her eyes beseeching him to understand. “You didn’t say anything during or after the weekend in Newport. I really want you to like him, Daddy.”
“He’s certainly different from Jackson or anyone else you’ve dated before,” he said neutrally. “Older, reserved, and perhaps a little austere for my carefree daughter.”
“That’s just the side he shows everyone else,” Cassie said, her voice full of conviction. “He’s different when it’s just the two of us. Granted, our relationship is still evolving, but he cares for me, deeply.”
“I know, Cassie,” Robert said, remembering the tender look in the other man’s eyes earlier. “This isn’t up for debate. But as your father, I’m allowed to be concerned. Gossip from a workplace romance is rarely kind to the woman, especially when there’s a power imbalance.”
He held up a hand when she opened her mouth to protest. “You still have two years left in your training here. All I ask is that you be careful and protect your reputation if not your heart.”
Before Cassie could respond, there was a perfunctory knock on the door, and then it swung open. Ethan Ramsey crossed the threshold and suddenly stopped, causing the nurse accompanying him to crash into his back, the tray in her hand rattling before she steadied it.
“Sorry to interrupt,” Ethan said, his brows furrowing as if sensing he’d stepped into a quagmire. “We need to draw Dr. Valentine’s blood, check her vitals and run a few tests.”
“Yes, of course,” he said, pushing the chair back and standing up. “I’ll let you get on with it while I grab a coffee and check in on Olivia.”
Robert turned to smile down at Cassie. “Why don’t I get you something to eat?”
“Well, I am feeling a bit peckish,” Cassie mused, a teasing twinkle in her eyes. “Hospital food sucks.”
“I’ll ask the chef at the hotel to whip up your favorites.” Robert leaned down and kissed her forehead. “Be good, and no more heroics.”
He nodded at Ethan, who came to stand across from him on the other side of the bed. He noted the softness in Cassie’s eyes, the concern in Ethan’s and felt like a third wheel.
As Robert left the room, he glanced at the nurse, oblivious to their situation, and hoped Cassie heeded his advice. Ethan seemed decent enough, but if he hurt Cassie…. Well, when it came to his children, all bets were off.

Talk is Cheap (2/2)
Book: Open Heart Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Sawyer Brooks) Rating: General Warning: Mentions of pregnancy Category: AU; Angst (with a happy ending) Word count: 2.7K Prompt: What would have been the outcome if Sawyer had discovered that she was pregnant whilst Ethan was in the Amazon? A/N: The theme song for this fic is “Go Get Her” by Restless Road.
Part One
Tumblr media
It took Sawyer two days and ten chewed up fingernails to work up the courage to call. And it took three unanswered calls to realize that her heart wasn’t done breaking.
“Ethan, it’s Sawyer. Please call me as soon as you get this message. I really need to talk to you.”
Ethan listened to the message several times. There were only two possible reasons for her call: something was wrong, or she wanted to talk about them. The only clue he had, her shaky and hesitant voice, was not enough to go on. Worried that weeks of strategic silence and self-inflicted loneliness would be for nothing, he determined that the safest course of action was to call his mentor. Speaking to Naveen would rule out several of the “something wrong” scenarios that were racing through his anxious mind.
Ring, ring. “Hello, Ethan. It has been a while,” Naveen answered. The two hadn’t spoken since the video call that ended with Sawyer darting away from his office in tears.
“Naveen. How are you? How have you been feeling?”
“I’m fine, son.”
“Did you have your check-up with Baz this month?”
“I did. My labs were normal.”
“Good… that’s good… uh, how’s the team?”
“They are managing quite well, and June is taking full advantage of her time at the helm,” Naveen chuckled.
“I don’t doubt it. And the interns? Have they killed anyone while I’ve been away?”
“The interns?” Ethan’s attempt at small talk was already suspicious, but asking about the interns was a dead giveaway. “Or one in particular?” Naveen pressed.
Giving up his pretense, Ethan confessed, “She left me a vague message. I was concerned that something had happened. That one of you might be sick or hurt.”
“I think it’s safe to say she’s hurt, Ethan,” Naveen challenged.
“You know that’s not what I meant. Is she okay? Has there been any more backlash from the trial? Has Nash been harassing her?”
An exasperated Naveen sighed, “I don’t know the reason for her call, Ethan. And even if I did, I would tell you to speak with her yourself. Tell me, how are you planning to work together if you’re not on speaking terms?”
“Our relationship will return to that of a strictly professional one. Working together on your case, sharing that secret… the lines got blurred and I let things go too far. It was the result of heightened stress and frequent exposure to-”
“Bullshit,” Naveen interjected.
“Excuse me?”
“You heard me. We both know if that’s all it was, you wouldn’t have bothered to call me. You wouldn’t care this much. Now, swallow your pride like that over-priced whiskey you drink and call her.”
<><><><><><><><><><>
The following day, Sawyer stood outside of Naveen’s office. “Hi Danielle, any chance the chief has some free time in the next day or two?”
“Let me check his schedule, Dr. Brooks,” the assistant answered, clicking her computer mouse.
“Sawyer? Is that you out there?” Naveen called from inside his office. “Come on in.”
Sawyer offered a thankful smile to Danielle and then stepped into Naveen’s office, closing the door behind her. “Thanks for giving me a few minutes.”
“I can always spare a few for my grand-mentee.” He gestured to one of the seats in front of his desk. “What’s on your mind, dear?”
Sawyer took a grounding breath, then proceeded. “A lot actually. I, uh…” She paused, nervously biting her bottom lip. Then as if ripping off a Band-Aid, she came right out with it. “What is the policy for taking a leave of absence? And if I did, how would that impact my fellowship?”
Naveen pursed his lips, mentally diagnosing the situation. “Well, that depends on the type of leave being requested.”
Sawyer hung her head for a moment, and when she looked up, her eyes were glassy. “Maternity leave.”
He followed her eyes when they shifted to a picture displayed on the hutch behind him, confirming his suspicion. Naveen hoped that Ethan had taken his advice last night. With a sympathetic air, he leaned forward and folded his hands. "Does he know?"
She shook her head and bit her lips, trying to prevent the spill of tears. “He hasn’t returned my calls," she finally managed.
“I’m so sorry, dear. Is there anything you need? Anything I can do for you?”
Sawyer reached for a tissue. “I just need to know what my options are.”
He nodded.
“And if it comes to it… the process for transferring my residency.”
He couldn’t help the frown on his face. “Of course.” A short while later, with a hug and another offer of support, Naveen said goodbye to Sawyer.
"Danielle, would you mind letting Dr. Cyrus know that I am running a few minutes behind?" Closing his door for privacy, he retrieved his phone from the pocket of his white lab coat.
Tumblr media
Later that night, in his tiny studio apartment in Atalaya, Peru, Ethan sat on the edge of the bed and scrolled through his phone contacts. He stared at Sawyer’s profile picture for a long while, gathering the strength to stay firm in his resolve, while also preparing for the worst. If she was sick, he would call in every favor he was owed. If she was moving on with someone new, he would hate it, but wouldn’t interfere with her happiness. If she was quitting… leaving… he would break.
With his thumb hovering over the call button, he was startled when the phone pinged. Tapping on the notification, he read the incoming lines of text and quickly realized that he had not anticipated this scenario.
Tumblr media
In her bedroom in her Boston apartment, Sawyer paced back and forth. The word “Read” appeared after the last line of her text message and she anxiously chewed on her thumbnail waiting for any kind of response. Preferably a call, but she would settle for three bouncing dots and a few lines of text. A half hour later, accepting the silence as his response, she powered off her phone and tossed it aside. Curling up in her bed, she cried herself to sleep.
In those same thirty minutes, Ethan stared at the sonogram picture and choked back tears. His knee bounced up and down nervously, carefully considering what to say and do to make things right. When he finally pushed the green call button, he immediately heard her voice on the other end of the line. “Hi there, you’ve reached Sawyer. Leave me a message.” He redialed several more times, but each time it went straight to voicemail. “Dammit!”
Ethan stood and raked his fingers through his hair in frustration. He spun around taking in his humble surroundings, considering his current obligations. “To hell with it.” After calling for a ride, he tossed his phone on the bed and began shoving his belongings into his open suitcase.
An hour later, from the backseat of a taxi, Ethan made another call. “Dr. Stehl, it’s Ethan Ramsey. I’m sorry to do this, but something has come up back home in Boston. A family emergency. I’m on my way to the airport now…”
After twenty-four hours of cramped bus rides and connecting flights, and a quick stop at home to freshen up, Ethan stood outside of Sawyer’s apartment door. Taking a deep, calming breath first, he knocked.
Elijah greeted him a half minute later. “Dr. Ramsey? I didn’t know you were back.”
“Yes, just. Is Sawyer here?”
Elijah moved backward and gestured for him to enter, assuming that Sawyer was already expecting him. It wouldn’t have been the first time she entertained Dr. Ramsey in their apartment, after all. It would also explain why she passed on going to Donahue’s with the other roommates for “Ladies Night” half-priced drinks. “She’s in her room. You remember which one, right?”
Ethan nodded. “Thank you.”
“By the way, I like the beard,” Elijah remarked, closing the door. “Maybe I should try to grow one so my patients won’t think I’m fifteen anymore.”
“Hmph,” Ethan huffed in amusement as he moved deeper into the quiet apartment.
He inhaled and exhaled slowly before gently knocking on the last door at the end of the hall, the door to Sawyer’s room. Though light emanated from underneath the door, there was no answer. He knocked again, and when she still didn’t answer, he carefully turned the doorknob and peeked inside.
Sawyer was fast asleep, hugging a pillow close to her body.
Quietly shutting the door behind him, he softly padded to the side of her bed and carefully sat on the edge. Her laptop lay open behind her. On the screen, an application for residency at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, which made Ethan’s stomach sink.
Odds were she hated him at this point. Despite the risk, he reached out to touch her. Tenderly skimming his fingers along her hairline, he brushed a few loose strands out of the way. “Sawyer,” he quietly said her name. When he repeated it, she finally began to stir and then opened her eyes.
Shocked, she bolted upright and backed away, nearly knocking her laptop to the floor. “W-what are you doing here?” she asked, trying to get her bearings.
“I came to talk. To apologize. To try to make things right.”
“Ethan, I–”
Sensing her distrust, “Please, give me a chance,” he implored. “I know I don’t deserve it, but will you please hear me out?” When she didn’t protest, he continued.
“I have been so selfish, Sawyer. When Naveen appointed you to the diagnostics team, I feared a scandal if people discovered we were together, especially with the ethics trial still fresh in people’s minds. I could never, in good conscience, put you in a position like that. You worked so hard and earned this fellowship. It’s a rare opportunity that I don’t want to get in the way of.” His eyes begged for understanding. “Please believe me when I say this… I want to be with you. So much so that I considered stepping down as team leader. Hell, I even considered resigning from the team altogether.” He ran his hand through his hair and took a deep breath. “As much as I care for you, Sawyer, I couldn’t give it up. I have spent my entire career preparing to one day fill Naveen’s shoes. It’s all I’ve ever wanted, until you. But everything between us happened so fast. It was still so new-”
“Ethan, I would never expect you to make that kind of sacrifice. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if you did,” Sawyer firmly cut in.
“I know, Rookie, and that’s why I told myself the only way forward was as colleagues, and nothing more.” He made a point of looking her in the eye. “But the problem is we’ve never just been colleagues, have we. There’s always been something more between us. I took advantage of the distance, hoping that if we cut ties for a while, the connection would fade and make it easier to leave what we had in the past.”
Sawyer shook her head in frustration.
“You don’t have to say it. I can probably guess what you’re thinking,” Ethan acknowledged.
“That you’re an idiot?” she quipped.
“Yes, and you’d be right to think so. I had convinced myself it was a solid plan. As long as we still worked together, I would still get to see and talk to my best friend without the constant worry of holding you back or jeopardizing your career.” Sawyer followed when he tipped his head to the laptop screen behind her. “Knowing how badly you wanted to be at Edenbrook, and how hard you fought for the fellowship, I hadn’t considered the possibility that you would leave. When you said you might move back to Arizona, I realized my plan backfired.”
Ethan gave her a moment to process.
“Why didn’t you call or write me back after I told you about the baby?” she demanded an answer.
"I know this will be hard to believe, but I swear I was just about to call you when I got your text. You can blame me for a lot, but you can’t blame me for the sudden shock of learning that I was going to be a father. It took me a while to catch my breath and find my words. When I finally got my shit together, I tried calling. Several times. But I kept getting your voicemail.” Ethan absent-mindedly stretched his hand toward her. “Sawyer, we both know words without action are meaningless. You mean so much to me and-”
“You have a real shitty way of showing it,” she interjected.
"And I'm here now because I want to change that. You deserve better than a phone call, and certainly more than a text message. You, Rookie, have the unnerving ability to read me like an open book. I want you to be able to look into my eyes and see the truth in my words when I tell you how I feel."
Protectively clutching her pillow to her chest, she braced herself. “And how do you feel?”
“About you?” he paused, his eyes darting between hers. “I am hopelessly in love with you, Sawyer Brooks.”
She swallowed, nervously anticipating his next words.
“How do I feel about this baby?” He sighed softly. “I’ll be honest, I never pictured myself settling down or having a family. I’ve spent the last twenty-four hours on buses and planes alone with my thoughts, and they were consumed with the idea of becoming a father. For the first time in my life, Sawyer, I could picture it… a family of my own... but only because you were with me in that dream. And I’m worried that I’ve fucked it all up.”
Overcome with emotion, Sawyer hid her face with her hands and sobbed.
“Sawyer?”
“Arrrrrgh,” she growled into her hands before lowering them. “I’m still furious with you… I’m not sure where we go from here… how to trust that you won’t walk away again.” She wiped her tears away. “But I guess we have a lot to figure out…” she said, her voice cracking, “because despite myself, I’m still in love with you, too.”
A wave of relief washed over Ethan. There was hope, even if the space between them made it feel like they were still on different continents.
“How are you feeling?” he asked, looking her over.
“I’ve had a little morning sickness, but mostly I'm exhausted.” She opened her mouth to say more but stopped herself.
“What is it?”
Her bottom lip quivered when she continued. “I’m scared to death.”
Ethan gently removed the pillow barrier and drew her near. “Come here.” He pressed a kiss to her temple and murmured, "It will be okay."
“You’ve said that before,” she mumbled into his chest.
He pulled back to look her in the eyes. “I’m sorry for letting you down before. I know that it will take time to earn back your trust. But I promise you, Sawyer, I’m here for you… for both of you. You can count on me,” he assured, his fingers twining with hers. “I will be the man... the partner… that you need me to be.”
They held onto each other in comforting silence for several minutes.
“I missed you, Asshole,” she whispered, then lifted her head to really look at him.
Ethan smiled. “I missed you, too, Rookie. Every minute of every day that I was away.”
Sawyer ran her hand over his scruffy beard, then over the soft leather of his jacket. “We’ve got ourselves a brand new Ethan Ramsey,” she assessed.
“This jacket’s been through a lot with me.”
“It suits you.”
Scratching his cheek, “And the beard?”
She studied him for a moment, then with the playful smile that he had missed so terribly, she teased, “You look like a dad.”
Seven months later…
Ethan stared in awe at the carefully wrapped bundle his wife held in her arms. The newborn’s tiny hand wrapped around the tip of his finger. Without letting go, he carefully nestled next to his wife on the hospital bed. Wrapping his arm around her shoulders, he leaned in and pressed an appreciative kiss to her temple. When he pulled back, she turned to him with a smile, soliciting another kiss but this time on her lips.
“I love you. How are you feeling?” he asked.
Before she could respond, there was a gentle knock on the door. Two older men bearing flowers, balloons, and teddy bears quietly entered. While the silver-haired man exchanged cheek kisses with Sawyer, the dark-haired man in the sweater vest moved to the other side of the bed and placed a hand on Ethan’s shoulder.
“Dad. Naveen. Let me introduce you to your grandson,” Ethan announced. “Brooks Winter Ramsey.”

The secret gift.
Synopsis: The truth behind Ethan's first Christmas with Aspen's family.
For @choicesficwriterscreations holiday event using the prompt buying a naughty present for LI and mum ends up on the line behind them.
Tumblr media
Jade and Tatum giggled once more in a hushed tone as they threw another ball of wrapping paper at Ethan who had, after a long day at work, passed out on the couch. He snored lightly and the girls took turns throwing the paper in tune with his snores.
Aspen walked in, noticing the scene before her, the girls looked at their mother for approval but on this rare occasion she gave them a glare, yet gently whispering.
"Stop it you two. He's had a difficult day and whatever he may say, he tires out. "
She nudged them back to actually begin wrapping the gifts. Since only Jonah was actually young enough for the whole Santa thing, he was already tucked in and fast asleep. The girls were on wrapping duty while Aspen put things in order in the kitchen, Ethan had done most of it when she had been out Christmas shopping and picking the girls up from the airport, who had visited her parents in Florida for Christmas break.
She gazed at the living room as she cleaned up, joining her family in the warm glow of the Christmas tree. She noticed Ethan had woken up and was entertaining the girls who were now too busy laughing.
Aspen walked in, wrapping her arms around Ethan's neck from the back as one of his hands came to rest atop hers. He looked up smiling at his wife, they shared a quick kiss before Aspen joined him on the couch.
Pulling the throw around their bodies, they stared at each other, momentarily forgetting their company.
"Dada! You were telling us about your first Christmas at Nana's. " Tatum reminded, grinning slightly.
"What about it? "
"Don't you think you forgot to mention something? Cause Nana told us quite a story. " Jade chided, throwing a furtive glance at her mother.
Ethan's eyes followed to land on his wife who seemed to have suddenly caught on, going red and flustered, she glared at Jade for broaching the subject. Curious, Ethan asked,
"What did she say? "
"Oh, a terrible mistake, a horrible run in. " Jade continued, Tatum threw herself onto the carpet, putting up a show of distress.
" Jade Ivy Ramsey!! Stop it! "
"It's the reason mom took you to Florida for Christmas. "
Ethan's head once again turned to his wife who looked a little resigned and uncomfortable as she began explaining.
"Remember how I called you to join me after I was in Tampa? It's cause my mom.... met me at the check out. "
"Yeah! Nana said you were buying Dad a present but it was a secret and Nana found out so she threatened to tell him unless he joined you for Christmas. "
"What was it, the gift? "
"Uh,... his favorite....coffee machine. He hated the hospital coffee. " She replied a little lamely, thankfully the girls didn't catch on, convinced by their mothers reply, Ethan however, was the better judge.
Soon after, they all headed to bed and Ethan finally confronted his wife.
"The coffee machine? "
"Uh yeah.. About that. " She answered sheepishly, once again her cheeks turning red at the old memory.
"Remember the Christmas special lingerie? "
"Of course I do. " Ethan replied, smirking at the various instances, which sadly ended when the flimsy cloth was unable to put up with their list filled frenzy. Suddenly, his brows drew together, confused at the change of subject.
"My mom caught me buying that. "
"You... What? " Ethan's mouth fell open, eyes flicking with horror, he continued staring mutely at his wife.
"I was in the check out line and mum happened to be behind me. I was talking to Sienna at the time, telling her how you would definitely appreciate the gift, with red being your favorite and all.. I got a little carried away.. Anyway, she firmly insisted that she simply must meet the man who would 'in so many ways ravage me' and 'make it the best Christmas Eve and morning ever. "
"No No... Penny.. She knew the whole time! "
"Since the first time she met you. At least she didn't tell the girls the whole truth, I need to have a word with her about that. "
He sat down on the bed, sighing heavily before meeting his wife's gaze.
Aspen straddled him, taking his jaw in her hand and connecting his lips to hers. Pushing him onto his elbows, she gently sucked at his pulse point, soothing it with her tongue. He moaned loudly as she moved away to pull her shirt off.
" I have always maintained you will be the death of me, Rookie. "
"Don't you dare tell me you don't like it. How about I try to find that lingerie again? "

When life has other plans (15/16)
DéJà Vu
Book: Open Heart (AU)
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC Casey Valentine
Rating: Teen
Category: Fluffy angst
Warnings: language, allusions to sexual activity, mentions of abandonment.
Word count: 1926
Summary: Despite all appearing well on the surface, recent and past events still haunt Ethan. A no holds barred discussion with an old friend gives Ethan some perspective and is able to be more open with his feelings with Casey.
Disclaimer: Characters belong to Pixelberry.
Authors note: nearly there everyone- thank you to everyone who has read this far. Hopefully the next AU will be less angsty.
🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂
Work was going well. Tobias slotted in on the team well. He was duly impressed with the skill of Casey. He was relieved that she appeared to be recovering from the effects of the attack. Most of the antidote research was going to be done out of Edenbrook and he was on that project. Moving to Edenbrook meant giving up the Stephanie Hill research but they were in very capable hands.
Things with him and Ethan were going great also. Both men had always missed their friendship but now that they were friends again, how much they had missed had become apparent.
After having their discussion with HR and Naveen, Ethan and Casey on the surface appeared to the outside world to be in a good place also. However there was still a deep wound that was starting to fester. Despite all the therapy, discussion about the abortion, even having an in depth discussion about what contraception they would use going forward and assurances from Casey that she would include Ethan in any decision making going forward, he was still haunted by the recurring dream that Casey was going to abandon him. He thought that after his mother said her final goodbye and that everything was calm the nightmare would go away but they did not. They even haunted him on days that she stayed with him. It was always worse when she was not there of course, her physical presence was the only thing that calmed him and got him back to sleep. Casey would occasionally feel him wake but he would assure her he was fine and then cuddle her, saying I love you, so much before he drifts off back to sleep. Casey knew the key points of Ethan’s chat with Louise but she always let him discuss the events and how he was truly feeling on his terms.
It had being a couple months since Louise’s departure and he was still haunted by the recurring nightmare. It had gotten to a point where Casey was very concerned about Ethan. Casey had a run of late shifts so she generally stayed at hers but when she saw Ethan, he was looking exhausted. She had seen him run on exhaustion before and that was while he was treating Naveen. This time though she could not help but feel there was something else he was hiding however whenever he was questioned as to what was the matter, he kept brushing Casey off. It was a quiet day and Casey was updating a patient chart and Ethan came up beside her. He was the worst she had seen him.
“Something is clearly up Ethan.”
“I am fine, just did not sleep well.”
“Why aren’t you sleeping well? Talk to me Ethan” said Casey, quietly but pleadingly.
“There is nothing wrong Casey. End of discussion.” He says adamantly before walking off.
Casey stood there shook. She knew Ethan was lying and she was concerned that he was not telling her for a reason. Just then Tobias saw a frustrated looking Casey.
“Valentine, what’s up?”
“Nothing to concern you Tobias.” She said before walking off. Tobias was not convinced. He had seen the beginnings of a wall go up and he had noticed the lack of sleep that he had been getting but now it was clear that whatever wall he had started was now impacting his relationship with Casey. He had never seen his friend happier than
what he had been and it saddened him. He knew he had to confront him, much like he did multiple times in medical school, he knew it would be a gamble, but it was one he had to take.
Casey was again working a late shift. Ethan was at home alone, wallowing in the prison of doubt he had created. All of a sudden there was a knock on his door. It shook Ethan out of his stupor. He got up to answer and he was surprised to see Tobias on the other side. He lets him in and offers him a scotch. Tobias accepts.
“What is up Ethan and don’t you dare start your bullshit spiel of how nothing is wrong.”
Ethan was affronted.
“Is it that obvious?” Asked Ethan
“In a word, Yes.” Stated Tobias.
“I am fine…”
“No you are not” interjected Tobias. He took a breath.
“The last time I saw you in this much denial about your feelings was medical school.”
Anger flashed in Ethan’s eyes briefly.
“We are not in medical school I know but why is this feeling so similar Tobias.”
“Because you are being the same emotionally constipated idiot.”
“So shall I expect you to be making a play for Casey huh?”
Tobias slapped him.
“I saw for months you building a war around yourself when things started to get really serious with you and Estelle. I saw and heard the anguish it caused both of you. Try as I might back then, you did not listen or if you did you lived in denial. That conversation that night was the last straw for her. She went to someone who knew what was going on and that was me. And here I am, some many years later and you are repeating the same fucking bullshit Ethan.”
“I am not…”
“Let’s recap shall we? Your girlfriend survives a bio weapon attack, things are great, you are the happiest I have seen you, then all of a sudden your world is turned upside down. Ever since then to me it looks like you have started to build a wall to protect yourself, you are in denial about how you are going and now you are pushing a woman who cares for you very much away. How am I doing?”
Ethan slams his glass down in frustration and starts to cry and then it all spills out.
Ethan told her about how when he was in the Amazon when Casey had found out she was pregnant and how she decided not to tell him, how he found out about it, the conversation he had the next morning and how she said to him that he was only helping her out of obligation. The dream he had after he first saw Louise, how things were going great and how he kept having a recurring dream of Casey abandoning him, even though they had discussed everything going forward. Tobias was stunned.
“Why have you not told Casey about these dreams? Clearly it is eating away at you and creating a problem where there should not be one?”
Ethan thinks for a minute. “I truly do not know. I am scared. Scared that she will think less of me for thinking she will abandon me, he’ll even have another abortion again without telling me…”
“Firstly, I get her not telling you, I mean I would not want to hear that over voicemail but seriously Ethan, why are you self sabotaging yourself again?”
“I am not..”
“Yes, yes you are.” Stated Tobias. “If you were not self sabotaging then Casey would know about these dreams instead of you lying to her and clearly yourself and to answer your other question, No I will not make a play for Casey.”
Ethan did not know what to think. Tobias was right of course, like he was back in medical school but it was still confronting.
“I really am an idiot aren’t I?”
“Well, yes but unlike medical school you have closure on Louise. In a way she has abandoned you again but at least she said goodbye this time, not just upping and leaving with no explanation.”
Ethan took a drink. “And you don’t think Casey will think less of me?”
“She is worried about you buddy, there is no denying that and she wants to be there for you.”
Ethan nods his head in resignation.
“Thank you Tobias.”
“I admit it was a gamble, given our history with chats like this but I am glad I took it.”
Ethan nodded. Both men enjoyed another drink before Tobias left.
Ethan knew what he had to do but it was still harrowing, admitting to the woman he loves that he was having dreams of being abandoned by her but he had to do it. He looked at her schedule. She had a day off after a run of lates. He decided that he would ask her here and take the day off so they could talk. He messaged Naveen that he would be away on that day and messaged Casey asking if she would stay with him the night before to which she agreed.
A few nights later, Ethan was in the office, nervous. He decided to stay back and bring Casey to his house. Also if he stayed at work it meant that he would not drink. Her shift came to an end and they made their way to his apartment. They made their way up and Ethan warmed up some leftovers for dinner.
They sat down and ate. Ethan could see that Casey was exhausted but he decided to come out with everything.
“You are right, I am not ok. Since Louise unceremoniously came and left again I have had a recurring dream. Of being abandoned…abandoned by you. The scenario in each abandonment is different. You go on sabbatical and do not come back, similar to circumstances to Louise leaving me, sometimes taking a child, sometimes not, you have another abortion and not tell me again…”
He starts to cry. “I know we have discussed the abortion, made plans going forward, spent plenty of time in therapy and I still can not shake the dreams.”
Casey stands up and hugs him while he lets his emotions out. It was confronting to hear that Ethan was still having these dreams and thoughts. She knew that seeing Louise had given him closure but still her declining any assistance would be upsetting. In that moment though all she did was thank him for telling her. They head to his room and make love to each other before drifting off to sleep. For the first time in several months Ethan did not have the nightmare. He awoke the next morning, rested, relieved. He cuddles into Casey and she starts to stir. She can feel how hard he is for and he and they have another sweet and slow session. Hunger eventually forces them from bed and Casey makes some pancakes for breakfast.
“I do not know what I can say that will be condescending. I know you are more of an action person, not a word person given your history but you know I will endeavour to show with my actions, not only how much I love you and mean to me but that I am not Louise and not abandon you.”
“I love you so much, I do not know what I did to deserve you.” Says Ethan.
They have a quiet day in. Fully enjoying each other and Ethan hoping that the worse of the nightmares were gone.
A week goes by and Ethan has no more nightmares and it dawns on him that even though he had been abandoned, hurt, he could rebuild and let those people back in. This realization also helped him work on his relationship with Alan. The most relieved people aside from Casey obviously was Naveen and Tobias. Ethan was also happy too and as they entered what would be Casey’s final year of residency, he was confident that he would not again butcher a future chat.
————-
Authors note 2: so one more chapter of a happy ending. It will take in key points along the final year including g the end of the residency period. Thank you for enduring thus far.

_______________
Catherine sat by the window, sipping her oatmilk latte as she read 'The Christmas Miracle'.
Keeping her book down, she stretched, looking out of the window, into the pretty white scenery. It was Christmas eve, and she was in the festive mood.
It sucked that Ethan had been called in for work for an emergency, but he'd promised he'd be back as soon as possible.
A sudden gust of wind slammed the window open. "Shit!" She exclaimed. Locking the window, she looked through the glass, rather disappointed and a bit scared to see a blizzard.
She curled up in her reading chair, her eyes darting back and forth between the window and her fireplace.
Boston winters were truly bleak.
She tried to call Ethan, but his phone was out of network service. Panicking slightly, she shot him several text messages, each of which failed to deliver. Keeping the phone down, frustrated, she walked downstairs to see how her daughter was doing.
She walked in on Claire playing a role-play with her Barbie dolls. "Hi, Claire." She said softly, taking a seat beside her four year old daughter.
"Mummy!" Claire greeted her brightly. "When is Daddy coming?" Catherine smiled slightly. "Dad will be home soon, love. Where's Pebbles and Jenner?"
"Oh, Jenner is sleeping in the kitchen. You wanna play doll? Pebbles just meowed at me twice when I showed her the dolls and ran off to the sitting room."
Catherine laughed. "I'll play."
She might have been engaged with her daughter's antics, but some part of her mind kept nagging her. Ethan had promised he would be back by two in the afternoon. It was seven in the evening. Where was he?Just then, the doorbell rang.
In anticipation, she rushed to the hall and quickly opened the door, the light in her eyes dying down as she saw it was only the mailman. "Thank you." She said, smiling blankly, as she took the parcel.
She took the parcel inside her daughter's bedroom, and examined it. It was enormous, carefully wrapped with red and green glitter paper. "Claire, baby, any guesses as to what's inside?"
Claire stared at the package. "That's huge, Mummy. Could it be a doll house?"
Catherine smiled. "It could be. It's from Grandma."
"Grandma? Is she and Grandpa not coming for Christmas? What about Uncle David and Auntie Enid? What about Grandpa Naveen and Grandpa Alan?"
Seeing her daughter get all riled up, Catherine laughed. "Everyone is coming tomorrow, baby. Relax. Now, shall we wait for Daddy to come home so we all can open the gift?"
Claire nodded impatiently. "But where is Daddy?!"
"He'll be home soon, love." Catherine assured her.
Just then, the doorbell rang. "That's probably Daddy." Catherine said, grinning as she got up to go open the door.
Sure enough, standing on the other side was Ethan, snow on his blazer covered shoulders and bag.
"Hi, love, how w-" Catherine stopper short when she saw it. "We have company?" She said lightly.
Ethan nodded. "Found this poor one shivering under a tree. I couldn't leave it like that."
Catherine gently took the puppy in her hands, allowing Claire to go outside and hug Ethan. "I'll warm up some milk for this little one."
Ethan nodded, kissing Catherine as he picked Claire up in his arms, entering the warm house. Locking the door, he carried Claire to her room, and gave a low whistle. "Hello, what's this?"
Claire smiled excitedly. "That's Grandma's gift!"
Ethan nodded. "I'll be back in a moment, baby."
He went into the kitchen, lit with a thousand candles, the kitchen table laid out with Christmas themed desserts.
Slowly approaching Catherine from behind, he hugged her, eliciting a delighted squeal.
"You look even more beautiful in candlelight."
Catherine giggled, spinning around in his arms to hug him back. "I missed you, handsome. I was worried sick when you weren't coming home."
"I missed you too. The goddamn network was inactive, so I couldn't even contact you to let you know I'd be late." He murmured, his lips brushing against her ear.
"Let me look at you." He said softly, taking a step back to admire her, effectively making her blush.
"Is that the shirt I gave you?" He asked quietly, smiling.
Catherine nodded, opening her white sweater to reveal the green shirt.
"You're so beautiful." He mumbled, picking her up.
Catherine laughed. "That's huge, coming from you, handsome."
Kissing him, she took the little puppy in her arms. "Can we keep him?"
Ethan smiled. "I was thinking of asking you that. Can we?"
Catherine nodded slowly. Ethan stroked the puppy's fur. "Name it."
Catherine smiled. "How about Jonah?"
Ethan simply looked at her.
"Well?" She asked, her smile faltering.
"Do you realise how sweet you are?" He asked quietly.
Smiling, she slipped an arm around him. "Jonah...." He murmured. The puppy cocked it's head, as if it was happy with the name as well.
Just then, Claire came running into the kitchen. "Open it." She whined.
Laughing, Catherine and Ethan accompanied Claire into her room.
"Who that?" Claire asked curiously, noticing the little puppy in Ethan's arms.
"Meet Jonah, baby. Your new friend."
Claire smiled. "Hello, Jonah! Oh, he is like Jenner!"
Catherine nodded, smiling. "Yes, baby."
Cuddling Jonah was enough for Claire to forget about the present.
Taking the parcel, Catherine opened the wrapper in one smooth, fluid movement.
The wrapping fell apart to reveal five separate boxes, with little name tags.
"Oh, Claire, look, Grandma even sent a box of chocolates!" Ethan said, smiling brightly.
Claire smiled. "Awww, they are Ferrero Rochers!! My favourite! Wait, Daddy. They stay here to see the gift! Pebbles! Jenner!" She yelled.
The two pets came bounding in, Jenner jumping onto Ethan as Pebbles curled up At Catherine's feet.
They unwrapped the parcel, to find a huge framed portrait, drawn by Catherine's mother herself,of Ethan, Catherine and Claire, Pebbles and Jenner on each side. "This is wonderful. Mum outdid herself." Ethan whispered.
Catherine looked at him, stunned.
"What?" Ethan asked in surprise.
"You called her...Mum." Catherine said quietly.
Ethan gently put the portrait down, and turned to hug Catherine. "C, you are the reason I believe in love. You are the reason I'm such a sap." He paused to chuckle softly into the crook of her neck. "You're my family, C. You, and your parents have been one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Daphne has been the mother I needed, I still need." He whispered.
Catherine smiled softly and stroked his hair, realising the magnitude of his feelings, the depth of his emotions. "Awww, Ethan, that's so sweet." She whispered.
A sudden squeak interrupted them. "Not fair, Mummy and Daddy! I want in on the love!"
Laughing, Catherine picked her four year old up. "Merry Christmas, Claire." She whispered.
"Merry Christmas..."

April OC of the Month: Olivia Hadley
Tumblr media
Please welcome April 2024's MC of the Month! Each month, we highlight one MC or OC on our Meet My MC / OC List. They are selected randomly on the Wheel of Names, and eligibility requirements can be found here. We accept MC / OC profiles on an ongoing basis. Please feel free to send yours in!
This month’s OC of the month is…
@storyofmychoices's Olivia Hadley!
More below...
In your own words, tell us what you like most about your MC / OC.
Olivia is literally sunshine. She is the most genuine and empathetic person. She constantly looks for ways to help others and make life better for those who are not as fortunate as she is. She always tries to make everyone she meets (especially children) feel special and heard/appreciated. It doesn’t matter if she knows them or not. She looks out for everyone. She is just a good person with the most beautiful heart and soul. She is so precious to me. In an ideal world, there would be a lot more Olivia’s to help us all feel special.
Do you feel your MC / OC is like you at all? How are you alike or different?
I do think Olivia and I have a lot in common. While I wish I could be as kind and empathetic as Olivia, I am still human, and I make mistakes. I try really hard to live by the principles of “leave the world a little better than you found it” (even if it’s just putting away a grocery cart someone left or picking up one piece of trash in a parking lot) and “be kind whenever possible; it is always possible” (this one is a little harder, but I try every single day to show kindness to everyone, even when I cannot show it to myself). I feel those principles also represent Olivia, she’s just better at it than me.
I also think we have similar occupations. We both wanted to be veterinarians and then learned we’d have to put animals down. Then we both switched to Pediatric Medicine. Olivia stuck with it. I decided to be a teacher because Pediatricians need to know how to deliver babies, and that’s a hard pass for me. Childbirth might be a miracle, but it’s disgusting (IMHO) lol. But we both work closely with children and try to make a positive impact on their lives. We both do whatever we can to create a safe place where children can tell us stuff they don’t know if they can share with their parents yet (questioning their sexual identity or gender). I’ve been very lucky to help several transgender elementary students feel more confident and accepted as well as work with parents to help them help their child. I’ve also worked with students with abusive home lives or their families can’t afford basic needs so I’ve gone out of my way to try to help them through anonymous donations and gift cards through the school. Anything I can do to ease even one struggle, I will do it and I think that is very much the person Olivia is. Olivia will always look out for anyone in her life.
As for differences, Olivia is a little more confident than I am. I drink far more coffee than she does. We both love plants, but she keeps them alive better than I do. I try, but I don’t always succeed, though a cactus I got as a gift from a student 3 years ago just bloomed for the first time this month, so I’m super excited for that. Maybe Olivia is finally rubbing off?
What is most important to your MC / OC? What is their motivation in life?
Olivia’s motivation is truly to make the world a better place. She knows that it’s not always easy, and there are so many struggles and so many hardships. She really wants to make a difference in the lives of those closest to her as well as in the community she serves. She knows she can’t conquer world hunger or global peace, but if she can make a difference to people around her then maybe those people can help some others and things would ripple out from there.
After she has children, her motivation splits. She’ll never stop caring about those around her or the patients she sees, but her children are her first priority.
What are their biggest pet peeves/dislikes?
Olivia doesn’t like gossip. She doesn’t like when people talk about others behind their back in a negative way. It makes her feel uncomfortable. She doesn’t like passive aggressive responses to situations. She genuinely believes that people are good, and if we all just try to have a little more empathy and understanding, the world would be a better place.
She doesn't like rudeness, pettiness, or dishonesty.
Olivia prefers order and organization, so she dislikes chaos and messy places.
If your MC / OC could change one thing - anything - what would it be?
If Olivia could change anything, she’d find a cure for childhood cancer. She takes each case to heart and watching children struggle is something that is very hard for her. She would never trade her time at Edenbrook for anything, and she feels guilty for even thinking it, but she is grateful when she opens her own practice that most of her cases become regular checkups and normal/everyday illnesses.
What is your MC / OC’s favorite quote or song?
“My favorite things in life don't cost any money. It's really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time." — Steve Jobs
“You are the sum total of everything you’ve ever seen, heard, eaten, smelled, been told, forgot - it’s all there. Everything influences each of us, and because of that, I try to make sure that my experiences are positive.” ― Maya Angelou
"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye." —Antoine de Saint-Exupery
"Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I'll try again tomorrow." — Mary Anne Radmacher
“Even miracles take a little time.” — Fairy GodMother (Cinderella)
“Happily ever after is about finding happiness within yourself and holding on to it through any storm that comes your way." —Chris Colfer
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your MC / OC?  (It can be why you created them, how they’ve inspired you, or you could write a little blurb as if it is coming from your OC - an acceptance speech. :) )
Ahhh what else to say about my precious Olivia?! She truly brings me so much joy.
If you’ve been in this fandom long enough, you’ll remember I was an Ethan romancer when OH first released. I enjoyed Ethan/MC’s dynamic. They totally reminded me of Thomas Hunt x MC. However, just before the pandemic, I wrote Bryce, thinking it was a one off thing, but as the world started to shut down, things got darker and scarier, Bryce Lahela’s sunshine and encouragement was something that resonated with me. I tried to make Olivia fit in the role of MC, but I just didn’t like the setup of MC with Bryce. So I made Olivia an original character. Taking her out of that MC role gave me so much more freedom with her and so much more freedom for telling her and Bryce’s story. I loved being able to see where each story would take them. I’m eternally grateful to Olivia (and Bryce) for helping me get through the Covid Pandemic. Having her and Bryce and their friends and family helped me have something positive and hope-filled to hold onto.
Olivia is actually really competitive. You might not see it or notice it at first, but if you’ve ever been a part of any competition with her, you’ll see she will not hold back.
Olivia has a black belt in taekwondo, even though she never talks about it. She got it in High School. She wanted to do something to challenge herself and she wasn’t participating in any team sports, though she did try to get a pingpong team started in her school but it never took off.
Olivia volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for a summer in the Dominican Republic.
Olivia has Scottish roots and has always dreamed of going to Scotland. She hasn’t gotten there yet, but one day!
Olivia is almost as lucky to have such good friends in Casey and Merida as I am to have @jerzwriter and @lilyoffandoms in my life. I can’t even begin to express how special they are to me and how I treasure their friendship.
Thank you to everyone who has ever supported Olivia. She is truly a special character who is so close to my heart. The fact that she is truly an original character and you still adore her means so much to me. I can’t say thank you enough. The amount of serotonin I get from writing and sharing her with you should be illegal, and then when anyone interacts, my heart explodes with unicorns and rainbows and all the sunshine. I’m eternally grateful for the support of Olivia, Bryce, and their little world. Thank you!!!

Pen-sive
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for this three-word ask @thosehallowedhalls: Ethan, Kaycee, pens. You have no idea how excited I was about this... I'll tell you why at the end of the fic. 😊
Book: Open Heart (Post Series) Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x Kaycee MacClennan (F!MC) Rating: Teen Words: 582 Summary: Something is missing, and Kaycee is not amused. A/N: @choicesjanuary2024 Day 17 - Rest (It's a bit of a stretch, but the poor man was resting - for a bit 😊)
Tumblr media
It had been a fairly quiet afternoon by Edenbrook standards, and Ethan was relishing the relative quiet in his office. Finally catching up on work he had put aside for a day just like today, he stopped to take a break when he felt the warm sun beaming in from the window. Sitting back in his chair, he closed his eyes to relish the peace and tranquility.
It was short-lived.
Kaycee came barrelling into the room with the force of a hurricane (and we're not talking about a category one). Slamming the door behind her, there was a fire in her eyes as she marched up to Ethan’s desk. He let out a breath; the break was nice, while it lasted.
“Yes,” he said with his best manufactured smile.
“What is this,” Kaycee spat, tossing an object that clearly offended her onto Ethan’s desk.
He picked it up and examined it as meticulously as if it were a newly admitted patient. Then, after much thought, he placed it down before him.
“It’s a pen, my dear. A Bic pen, if we’re being exact. Classic style in clear plastic barrel casing. It appears to be a ballpoint with the blue cap still intact. Is that a sufficient explanation? Or do you require more?”
Kaycee plopped into the chair with a weary sigh, rubbing her temples to release the tension.
“And, my love, what is my opinion on this variety of pens?”
“You find them to be vile and an affront to humanity. You lie awake at night, baffled over why Congress has not taken adequate steps to rid society of each and every one.”
Her lips curled upward, and that dimple Ethan loved so much appeared. She wanted to maintain the level of exaggerated fury she had burst in with, but as usual, he wore her down.
“You are insane,” she chuckled.
“I’m insane? I'm insane? Should I bring in an impartial third party to determine who the insane one is?”
“Where is my pen!” She demanded. “I was sitting with you this morning, and I had it... my baby! My beautiful Uniball Jetstream retractable pen. You know, the one that glides across the page like silk, leaving a nice bold line without one single smudge or skip. WHERE is it Ethan, and don’t lie to me... I have my ways of finding these things out.”
Ethan smiled and shook his head. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out Kaycee’s treasured writing implement and handed it to her across his desk.
“In fairness, YOU grabbed the wrong pen when you left the office this morning.  I had nothing to do with this.  I didn’t even use it, just had it in my pocket for safe keeping... I know better.”
“I was still not caffeinated!" She said defensively. "I'll cut you a little slack, but did you page me 911 telling me to get back to your office and get it right away? No.  So I still hold you accountable for making me use that... that vile excuse of a pen all morning.”
Ethan took off his glasses and pinched the bridge of his nose.  “How can I make it up to you, dear?”
“Take me to lunch?”
He smiled and stood up from his chair, tossing his car keys in his pocket as he did.
“Let’s go, and perhaps we can swing by Staples on the way back.”
“Staples? Why?”
“To get you a new box of those Uniball pens.  I can’t take this kind of stress at work.”
Beaming, she reached over and kissed him on the cheek.  “You know, you’re the best boyfriend ever!”
“Yep!” He nodded. “I certainly am.”
A/N2: OK, so you don't know this, but I am OBSESSED with pens. I am an utter pen snob, and it's not healthy. To make it worse, my boss's boss is the same way. We keep the cheap, shitty pens on our desks and "our pens" locked away so no one can get to them. If someone inadvertently takes one, we have been known to spend the morning hunting the offender down and making them pay. So the JOY this prompt brought me... you have NO idea. And now you have a peek into my variety of mental illness. lol Thank you!

Cassie Valentine was falling in love with the tall, dark, handsome man beside her. Ethan Ramsey had enthralled her from the first moment she laid eyes on him.
What about him made her heart yearn for love so powerful it conquered all? The kind poets waxed melodically about. One that lasted for a lifetime and beyond.
Light from a street lamp cut a swath through the windshield, momentarily brightening the close quarters of the front seats of Ethan’s luxury sedan. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Ethan’s fingers grip and flex around the steering wheel as he took a right turn at the intersection.
The low sound of a classical concerto drifted from the speakers. The melody was hauntingly beautiful and sad, reminiscent of the doomed romance in the opera they’d just attended. It reminded her that not everything was written in the stars.
Alessandra and Damarion weren’t the only ones condemned to a life of loneliness, never to realize their love because pride and circumstances kept them apart. Some relationships just weren’t meant to be, no matter how much one could wish otherwise.
And yet, every time she bounced back, he pulled her back down.
Before that night in Miami, she made a promise to herself to move on with her life. But the longing in his blue eyes and the ache in his gruff voice whenever he let his guard down was her undoing. And, in a single moment, with the sound of waves crashing in the background and the feel of his arms tightening around her, she fell all over again.
Tonight was no different. Cassie remembered how he held her hand during the performance, quietly comforting her when she needed it. The way he gently wiped a tear from her cheek, his breath catching at the sparks rising where skin touched skin.
No matter how much Ethan said otherwise, she knew they weren’t wrong for each other. She might have initiated the kiss in Miami and tonight, but he wasn’t immune to the attraction between them despite his denials.
“You know how complicated this is,” he said from behind her as she stared holes into the patterned wall of the private box.
Cassie turned around because hiding her emotions made her feel like a coward. His eyes pleaded with her to understand, but she couldn’t pretend anymore.
“It’s not complicated, Ethan. Not for me.”
When he raised a hand to brush a lingering tear from the corner of her eye, she leaned into it, savoring the feel of his touch. That was all it took to break through his barriers. With a curse, he pulled her into his arms. His stubble was rough against her skin, but the kiss was soft and tender.
She heard the groan deep in his throat as he closed the distance between them. His hands ran through her hair, and her arms circled around his waist. Their bodies fit together like they always were intended to become one.
And then the house lights came on, chasing away the shadows where their hunger for each other thrived, replaced by the stark light of reality.
The distance from the opera house to her apartment building was short, prolonged only by his measured adherence to the speed limit and traffic lights conspiring to keep them together for a while longer.
Cassie’s heart sank as the ride came to an end. He pulled up outside her building, the engine running as he switched the gear to park. She felt his eyes on her, the poignant silence stretching in the darkness, and wondered if he regretted the kiss tonight, just like he had all those months ago in Miami.
And she knew it would break her heart if he said the words that confirmed her worst fears. So, she wouldn’t let him, she told herself resolutely, and opened the car door.
“We are so much more than you let us be,” Cassie whispered morosely, unable to let it go as she exited the car.
A wave of longing crashed over him at hearing his innermost thoughts coming from her lips. He swallowed against the lump in his throat, frozen as denial and apprehension resurfaced. The slamming of the passenger door shook him out of his daze.
“Cassie, wait!” Ethan called out urgently, reaching to open the driver’s side door. But he was too late.
Stricken at the moment lost forever, he watched dejectedly as she jogged up the steps, stopping only to unlock the street door, and disappeared inside.
He stared into the darkness, wishing for her to return, but he knew it was pointless. He checked the rearview and side mirrors and pulled out into the light traffic on the quiet residential street.
Ethan told himself it was better this way. He was an attending. She was an intern. Unsavory gossip aside, he couldn’t be the reason she failed to become the amazing doctor he knew she had the potential to be.
When he stopped at the next red light, he inhaled deeply, and the lingering scent of her floral perfume hit his senses. For a lone second, Ethan asked himself who he was kidding. He was sinking deep, and there was no rescue in sight.
Then the light turned green, the driver behind him honked impatiently, and that solitary reflection of surrendering to what could be vanished into the darkness as if it had never been.

Never Been Kissed
Book: Open Heart, Book 2 Pairing: Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Dr. Sawyer Brooks) Rating: General Category: Fluff Word count: 1.8K Summary: Ethan helps Sawyer with one of her New Year’s resolutions. A/N: I woke up with this idea yesterday and hammered it out last night so I could post it in time for NYE. Please forgive any errors. Happy New Year!🎉🪩🍾
Events/Prompts: • Participating in CFWC Holidays 2023 • Participating in Choices Flashfics Week #66 Prompts 🫤3: “How much worse could it get?” • Participating in Choices Holidays Winter 2023
Tumblr media
Sawyer had never kissed anyone on New Year's Eve.
Every year, for as long as she could remember, she rang in the new year with her family. The tradition was due in part to the fact that it was also her father's birthday. Twelve years away at school, but she always returned home for the holidays, never missing the annual event. Even last year, her first in Boston, she was able to make it home. A trip made possible by the plane ticket Ethan had given her for Christmas, a generous thank-you gift for helping him with Naveen.
In recent years their family party grew to include significant others and their babies. Everyone had a special someone to kiss at midnight. Everyone but Sawyer.
When she broke the news to her parents that she was staying in Boston for New Years, there was disappointment on both ends of the line. A couple weeks had passed since she returned to work, and the medical leave she took to recuperate from the attack had already eaten up more time than she could afford. She couldn’t spare any more time away. Her parents were understanding, and Sawyer found a silver lining in that she finally had a special someone to kiss at midnight this year.
At least that was the case until she looked at her schedule a week later. Zaid accommodated her request for extra shifts, allowing her to make up clinic hours. But given that she worked a double on Christmas, she didn’t expect another on New Year’s Eve. She should have known better. It was one of the busiest nights of the year in the emergency department.

After a quick coffee break at Derry’s, Ethan helped Sawyer put her coat back on. He took the cream colored beanie that she pulled from her pocket and fitted it over her head. “Nice bunny tail,” he said, gently swatting the giant cotton ball sewn to the top of her knit hat.
“Watch it, Mister, or you won’t be getting any of this tail for a while,” she turned and shook her rear end at him.
Just before they headed back inside the hospital, Sawyer squeezed his hand. “Sure you don’t want to volunteer and stay for another shift?” she asked, looking up at him with a puppy dog pout.
The first time Sawyer returned to work after the attack, with her landlord in tow, it had been a complete disaster. Though things had gone better this time around, Ethan kept an eye out for any signs of distress. She had her ups and downs, and he couldn't help but worry about her. "Is everything all right?"
“Yeah, it’s fine. You don’t need to worry. I promise,” she tried to assure him, sensing his concern. “I’m just going to miss you tonight, that’s all.”
Ethan could still feel something was off, but dropped it.
🎉🪩🍾🎉🪩🍾🎉🪩🍾🎉🪩🍾
It took him twice as long to get home with New Year’s revelers heading to their festivities around town. After a light dinner, a satisfying workout, and a long, hot shower, Ethan settled on his couch. The apartment suddenly felt too quiet, too empty. He missed his girlfriend. Since Sawyer began picking up double-shifts, they had not had a lot of time alone. Sure he got to see her at work. But it wasn’t the same as curling up together on the couch and talking about their day, or kissing whenever they felt like it, or waking up in each other’s arms.
Hoping it would provide some distraction, he turned on the television and watched the local news. When the weather segment began, Ethan grew bored. He reached for a book on the coffee table, finding Sawyer’s notebook underneath. He recognized it from their DT meetings, where she took meticulous notes and sometimes doodled during their brainstorming sessions. She must have forgotten it the last time she stayed over.
The way her mind worked fascinated him. She could be discussing the differences between apples and oranges when… Click! An idea would pop into her head to check their patient for uneven skin texture, giving her the lead needed to reach a successful diagnosis.
Curious to know her thoughts about their current, undiagnosed patient, Ethan picked up the notebook and flipped through the pages. They were filled with detailed notes from each of their team meetings. Random side notes littered the margins. Tacos or burritos? He chuckled, wondering if the question was part of a diagnostic brainstorm, or if she was just hungry at the time. Turning the page to a more recent entry, he found Sawyer’s notes from a meeting he conducted last week. Ethan had attempted to inspire the team by conducting a goal-setting exercise. He asked everyone to jot down a few professional and personal goals for the new year.
Tumblr media
Several emotions washed over Ethan as he read her goals. She was cute as hell, but his heart broke a little knowing how much weight she still carried on her shoulders.
On the TV, the New Year’s Eve countdown now aired. A correspondent stood in front of a large crowd of people gathered in Times Square. “…And according to folklore, a kiss at midnight brings luck and strength to that relationship for the rest of the year. So, who will you be kissing when the clock strikes twelve?” Ethan looked down at her list again. Is that why she wanted me to stay tonight? Was that the reason she seemed so… disappointed?
A timer in the corner of the TV screen counted down the time to the famous ball drop. Forty minutes until midnight.
Ethan never paid any mind to superstitions. Thinking back to the events of the past two years, he thought to himself, “How much worse could it get?” He shuddered at the thought, bolting to his closet where he threw on a pair of jeans and a sweater, then slipped into his running shoes. He was not going to take any chances, and most importantly, he was intent on giving Sawyer whatever she desired. If she wanted a kiss at midnight, he would make it happen. Keys and jacket in hand, the door to his apartment slammed shut behind him.
Ethan stepped into the atrium and checked the clock behind the reception desk. Fifteen minutes until midnight.
He pushed through the doors of the emergency department a couple minutes later. It was eerily quiet. The calm before the storm. In about an hour, the waiting room would be packed with reckless and unfortunate party-goers. He didn’t see Sawyer anywhere, but wanting to confirm, Ethan inquired at the triage desk.
“Happy New Year, Dr. Ramsey,” the triage coordinator greeted.
“Happy New Year, Anabel. Have you seen Dr. Brooks?”
“About an hour ago? She mentioned trying to catch a quick nap before the midnight rush.”
“Thank you.”
Ethan made his way to the on-call room nearest the emergency room. When he opened the door, the beds were full of sleeping doctors, but Sawyer was not among them. After a quick peek in the cafeteria, he headed up to the Internal Medicine floor. The hallways were dim and quiet at this time of night. He checked all the obvious places. Staff lounge, empty. Resident locker room, empty. The on-call room was also empty, save for a pager that someone had left behind. Duh!
“Could you page Dr. Brooks, please?” he asked the nurse sitting behind the circular desk. Not a moment later, the pager in his hand started to vibrate.
Of course. He wondered if this was the universe mocking him for his skepticism.
Jan, the night supervisor, quietly exited the patient’s room behind him. “Hey kiddo, I thought you went home a few hours ago?” She noticed the pager in his hand. “Did someone page you?”
“Uh, no. Jan, I’m looking for Sawy- for Dr. Brooks? Have you seen her?” he asked.
“No, hon, but I’ve seen several folks making their way up to the helipad for the fireworks. Maybe she’s up there?”
Yes! She loves fireworks. Ethan looked at his wrist. Five minutes until midnight.
After thanking the nurses, he walked with purpose to the elevator bank and punched the up button. Come on, come on! Four minutes to midnight.
When he reached the seventh floor he jogged to the helipad entrance. The automatic glass doors slid open and a frigid gush of wind hit his face. With only the light of the helipad beacons, Ethan frantically scanned the gathered crowd. She’s not here. Dammit!
He checked the time again. Two minutes until midnight.
As he turned to head back inside, he noticed a large chunk of snow falling from above. It fell from a secluded section of the rooftop that few knew how to access. Naveen referred to it as “the bird’s nest.” He shared its location with Ethan, and in turn, Ethan shared it with Sawyer. It was a place they could go when they needed a minute of peace. To his surprise, he saw what appeared to be a snowball floating in midair. Wait… not a snowball. A bunny tail!
When he reached the stairwell, he glanced at his watch again. One minute until midnight.
Climbing the stairs three at a time, he quickly ascended two flights of stairs, bursting onto the ninth floor. Thankfully these hallways were lined mostly with administrative offices and were completely abandoned given the late hour. Sprinting to the end of the long hallway, Ethan pulled on a door marked “Authorized Personnel Only.” He launched himself through the dark doorway and blindly climbed another flight of stairs.
Just as his hand reached the door at the top of the staircase, he heard an explosion on the other side. Midnight.
Sawyer jumped when she heard the steel door crash against the stone exterior of the building. Turning around, she saw Ethan. Steam puffed from his mouth as he tried to catch his breath.
With the sky sparkling behind her, he grabbed the sides of her face, and crashed his lips onto hers. Once the urgency had subsided, he changed the angle and kissed her again. Deep and tender. When he pulled away to give his lungs a chance to expand, Sawyer could see the fireworks reflected in his eyes.
Tucked in his embrace, she smiled up at him. “What are you doing here?”
“Helping you keep your New Year’s resolutions.”
She looked at him confused. “Wait... how did you know about that?” She hadn’t remembered mentioning it to him, or anyone for that matter.
“You left your notebook at my apartment.” He reached into his pocket and handed her the pager. “You also left this in the on-call room.”
“Shit. Please don’t tell my boss.”
“You’ll have to silence me with another kiss,” he smirked.
“Well, if that's what it takes...” she laughed, standing on her tiptoes. She brushed her lips against his and whispered, “Happy New Year, Ethan.”
Before claiming her lips again, he whispered back, “Happy New Year, Rookie.”

Together.
Synopsis: The aftermath of the attack comes with a waterfall of feelings. But is it enough to stop pretending?
Ethan's POV
Category: Angsty fluff. I can never resist a happy ending
Tumblr media
Sunlight peeked through the blinds at the blissful couple nestled in sleeps abode. I was the first to stir, stretching as consciousness returned, slowly opening one eye, then another before opening both to stare at the back of the woman who occupied every inch of my soul.
Her body moved rhythmically, even breaths for which I was grateful, ever since the attack seeing her felt like mercy on my heart. I would have died inside had she not made it. I loved her, with every fiber of my being, I did. And I would show her just how much I did, every single moment that we spent together.
I smiled, closing my eyes and sleep lulled me back into its abode.
**********
"Ethan? Hey. " A gentle nudge against my shoulder followed by a kiss on my forehead roused me. I pulled her hand in mine.
"Penny."
"Wake up, sleepyhead. It's almost noon. "
" Perfect time to come back to bed. " I turned to my side, pulling her hand with me, her body following.
"Who are you and what have you done to my Ethan? "
"It's you Rookie, what are you doing to me? "
She giggled, sitting by my side, bending over me. Suddenly water slapped against my face, making me jerk back, my eyes flying open.
"Oh, sorry. "
Aspen moved her wet hair back over her right shoulder. I looked up to see her smile sheepishly at me, leaning down to peck my lips lightly. I held her against me, her bathrobe soft against my skin, not allowing the kiss to end. Her lips moved in a perfectly synchronized manner, tasting of honey. Needing air, we broke away.
I laid back, staring at her as she brushed my hair back, her fingers running through them, instantly relaxing me.
"Why are you looking at me like that? "
"Like what? "
"With that wierd look in your eyes. " I couldn't in that moment fathom how I had ended up finding her, how I would treasure her forever.
"I was just thinking"
"About? "
I wasn't gonna tell her just yet but she meant everything to me, how I would never hurt her again. I flipped us over so that she was under me. I hovered over her, kissing her once more.
She smirked at me.
"As much as I would like to, you have a shift. At a hospital you work at, as a doctor. " She teased.
**********
Reluctantly, I picked up my belongings and car keys, giving Penny a lingering kiss, hugging her tightly.
"Someone's all lovey dovey today. " She pecked my clothed shoulder. Ignoring her astute observation, I quickly steered the conversation in a different direction
"When are you coming in again? "
"At around 7. I have a night shift today."
Noticing my slightly deflated look, she chuckled. I bade her goodbye, walking out to another day at Edenbrook.
The day continued like always, annoying interns, diagnostic cases and a couple of hours at the clinic. It was time for my shift to end, packing up my stuff I headed out, popping into the resident quaters to greet Aspen where I was informed she wasn't in yet.
I called her but she didn't answer, which was usual, and utterly annoying. I walked out to get into my car, winding through Boston traffic when the car bluetooth pinged with Penny's name.
"Hey. Where..." Her hoarse gasp shut me up.
"Ethan. Where are you? " Her laboured breath hitched as she gasped into the receiver.
My heart clenched with fear, breaking into a cold sweat I calmed my rising anxiety.
"Darling? What's wrong? "
"I need you to come quick. "
"Hold on, I'm almost there. Just hold on. " I prayed and begged her.
********
"Rookie "
"ROOKIE" Jenner barked frantically, running towards me.
"Here." A whisper called out to me from the kitchen floor.
I knelt down by Aspen's weak form, helping her into a sitting position, supporting her weight. She had a pretty bad bruise on the side of her shoulder, already turning black and blue. Jenner stood by my side, worried at the scene before him. She looked up at me and smiled weakly, trying to put on a brave face so I wouldn't worry.
" Don't worry, I just felt dizzy and blacked out. I hit the counter on my fall." She moved her arm, wincing.
"It's probably due to the anemia. You'd warned me it was a common after effect of the toxins I was exposed to. "
" You're right. I'll drive you to the hospital and get you set up. " She nodded as I picked her up.
*********
I pulled the car into the parking space, getting my seatbelt off and ready to open the door when she stopped me.
"Wait! "
"What? " I scanned her, noticing the alarmed look in her eyes.
"You can't take me inside and somebody might see me get off from your car. Drop me at the back entrance and then go home. Your shift's done, it will be suspicious if you return five minutes after I'm here. "
"Have you lost it! I'm going nowhere. "
"But, Ethan everyone will know.. about Us. " My insides fluttered at her words.. Or one word in particular. Us. I didn't care anymore.
"Then let them. " I looked at her earnestly. The way her eyes lit up at my decision had me wishing I had done it long ago.
"Let's go in, together. " I offered.
"Okay." She pushed the seatbelt off as I opened the door for her and helped her out. I steadied her, walking her in through the hospital doors.
**********
"Dr Ramsey! Um.. You're gonna..? " Marlene startled seeing me walk into Penny's room.
"Yes Marlene, I'm gonna sit by my sick girlfriend for the entire night. "
"Of course. " Marlene smiled a genuinely happy smile, leaving as she completed her last call, ready to hand over the floor to the next nurse on duty and head home.
The hospital was in quite a stir now. Hushed whispers and shocked indiscreet looks, everyone trying their best to hide their surprise and failing. I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose, we weren't exactly parading being together, we just weren't hiding it anymore. I was tired of it.
Knowing how precious time was, knowing how much of it was already gone, not knowing how much was left, a chill ran down my spine just thinking about having regrets. This... Us it wasn't something to be kept like dirty secret. I wanted people to know I loved this woman and she deserved nothing less than that.
I sat lost in my thoughts when a small voice called out to me.
"Ethan."
"Rookie, hey, what's wrong? "
"Nothing.Could you just get the bed into a sitting position. " I turned the lever, pushing her slightly up.
"Thank you. For tonight. "
"What do you mean? "
Her eyes turned warm and glazed, she had beautiful eyes, the chocolate orbs stared at me with so much understanding, I couldn't help but fall in love all over again. Man, I had it bad.
"For showing how much this means to you. Us"
I simply kissed her forehead, words leaving me. I was done living safe. This was definitely a risk but when it came to her...She was worth every risk in the world.
