Iris
Steven Grant X Reader
Summary: You and Steven go on a date and dance to a favorite song on yours.
Thank you to @ahookedheroespureheart for the idea!
This is kinda a song fic, it goes through the song Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls, but if you are familiar with my other song fics like Some Nights or And so it Goes this one isn't STRICTED tied to the song. The song exists in the fic, it's not a vessel for which the fic exists in.
Anyway, here's Wonderwa- I mean Iris
How did you get here?
When Steven asked you out, you were nervous as hell. He was cute, of course, he was hot, actually. But he was a bit… odd. Not that you minded odd, necessarily. Hell, you were odd. But a girl’s gotta be careful. Steven was often late, looking disheveled and muttering, he could be seen talking to himself and would stare off into space. But the thing is… he was always kind. No matter how he looked like he might shatter if you touched him and no matter how it seemed he hadn’t slept in days, he greeted you with a smile and a hello. He greeted everyone like that. That’s what really endeared him to you and made you say yes to the date. Anyone can be nice to the person they have a crush on or are trying to fuck. Steven was just… kind. If he talked to himself a bit? Well, maybe you could live with that.
One dinner, one shared dessert and 2 drinks later, you found yourself walking alone in a park in the dark with a man you barely knew. It was your idea, of course. Steven would never dare to suggest such a thing, he was far too aware of people's comfort levels for this. No, this was your idea. The night was warm and clear and perfect. Steven was perfect. You were doing laps around the park together and before you knew it, you felt like you had known him your whole life.
“Man, it’s been forever since I went to a concert. I always meant to but between the blip and covid and it seems nowhere is safe anymore, it’s probably been years.” You had talked about everything and anything, and now you were discussing your favorite music.
Steven was holding your hand “That’s too bad, you said you enjoy them so much… Maybe we could go sometime? I mean- uh-” He stopped the walk briefly “Well, I don’t want to assume there will be a second date… but…” he nodded down to the hand holding and raised his eyebrows.
You giggled and turned away “Yeah, I’d like another date, if you do.” You looked up at him hopefully.
Steven looked borderline bewildered, but he was smiling. “If I do? I would like nothing more in the world, darling.”
You blushed and grinned, wanting to turn away but his gaze was captivating. He looked at you so adoringly. “Another date it is. And yes, I’d love to go to a concert with you.”
He looked relieved, and continued walking. “Do you remember what the last show you went to was?”
You thought for a moment. “I think it was The Goo Goo Dolls. Yeah, definitely the Goo Goo Dolls. It was great, their music is just beautiful, romantic and gutting.”
“I can’t say I know much about music. I don’t know if I know them”
You squeezed his hand reassuringly. Steven knew a lot about a lot of things, but pop culture was not one of them. You knew he felt awkward when he was missing gaps of information. “I think you’d know their music if you heard one of their bigger songs, they were on the radio a lot 10-20 years ago.”
Steven stopped “Can you… can you maybe show me one?”
You smiled broadly. He was always so interested in your interests. “Yeah, I’ll show you the one that’s probably the most famous, Iris. This song live was incredible. They did that thing in the second verse where they cut the music and stop singing” You were fishing through your purse to find your phone “and it’s just the crowd carrying the line… they did that with the part ‘And you bleed just know you’re alive’ and you just feel like you just feel like you’re a part of something, you know?” You found it, pulling up the youtube app.
“I don’t, actually… but I look forward to you showing me” He smiled hopefully, as if you would reject him at any moment.
“I can’t wait. Here it is.” You start the song, and the familiar guitar already warms your heart.
Steven held his hand out for your phone. You didn’t know why he wanted it, but you gave it to him; he turned it all the way up and put it inside his pocket.
And I'd give up forever to touch you
'Cause I know that you feel me somehow
“May I have this dance?” He bowed and held out his hand.
You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now
You curtsied, awestruck at the perfect moment he had curated for you. “Always” you took his hand and he pulled you close into his arms.
And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
And sooner or later, it's over
I just don't wanna miss you tonight
You hadn’t noticed the clouds rolling in, you had been too distracted by the perfect evening. You never wanted this to end. Your hands rested on his chest, while one of his wrapped your shoulder and the other was chastely on your hip.
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
How did Steven get here?
Marc thought he was crazy to ask you out when he only found out about Marc so recently, but he just couldn’t take the wait anymore. He had wanted you for so long, and here you were in his arms, as beautiful as he could imagine a person being. Something about you said that you could take him for all he was.
And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
Yeah, you bleed just to know, you're alive
How was everything going so perfectly? He couldn’t believe that you were here, in a park, dancing to a beautiful song beneath the stars. Oh. No more stars. Well that was alright. Everything was still perfect. He prayed to whatever god was out there that everything would work out.
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
You tried your best to imprint everything into your memory. How firm his chest was, the smell of his skin, his chin resting on your shoulder. You wrapped your arms around him, hoping he wouldn’t slip away. You wouldn’t let it happen. You couldn’t.
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
Steven heard the rumble of thunder. He looked for a shelter, but it was already too late. The rain started. You held tightly onto him, dancing as the rain covered the two of you
When the guitar solo started, Steven took your hand “Over here, love” He took off running, pulling you behind him as you both grinned and giggled like lovestruck teenager as the instrumental picked up. You entered the gazebo as the song’s climax slowed. He took your face in his. “You are so beautiful, so, so beautiful.”
You looked into his large brown eyes, was it possible to be in love so fast?
When the chorus picked up again, for the final time, his mouth practically crashed into yours.
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am
He kissed with a passion, like it was a hello and a goodbye all at once. It was like he was attempting to memorize every inch of you; his tongue exoploring your willing mouth, his hands roaming your body. You returned the favor, pushing him up against the wall of the gazebo and rediscovered his chest for the second time tonight. In an uncharacteristic move, he grabbed your hips and turned you so that you were against the wall, asserting his dominance. You moaned, your chest rising against his as he pressed into you. He took your hands in his and pinned them above your head with one hand, his free hand still holding you, pressed flush against him.
When the kiss finally broke, your hands were still above your head, practically holding you up. Your body felt like jelly, you had never been this flushed, this turned on, from a kiss. He had never even touched anywhere private, and already you felt wet enough for him. Christ, the things he could do with his mouth. You couldn’t help but wonder… But when you opened your eyes, Steven was looking at you like you had hung the stars in the sky.
He gently let your hands drop, sprinkling little kisses along your face and neck. “I guess we know what our song is.”
You took his hair in your fingers, pulling him towards you. “Kiss me like that again, pretty boy.”
