It escalated quickly; too quickly to even process what you were doing, and what you were doing wasn’t even a good idea to begin with, but it was the only thing you could think of.

The Hellfire Club was currently in the midst of a rather heated prank war, started of course by their relentless leader himself, and you had slowly been dragged into the cruel web he had begun to weave three weeks ago.

Current WIPs/Current Ideas/Random Update

So there's a lot going on in my brain right now and I dont want to be the asshole who posts a poll after every single time I post a fic, but it has worked for me thus far. And if you know me - I have always had more fic ideas than I have had the ability to make decisions. Even before Tumblr got polls, I used to post polls all the time to help decide my next fic. It works well for me

However, I am conflicted about doing another poll because of the inherent bias of the Criminal Minds fandom.

90% of you guys are Spencer lovers, and if I put an Emily fic on the poll, I feel like it will get outvoted no matter what. But I could also be wrong about that - people could be thirsting for an Emily fic because she is lacking attention and vote it up for that reason. But I just hate the idea of people picking based on the character and not their interest in the concept/what would be written about that character

That being said, here's what we're working with:

I am actively working on the Dad Spencer fic (Dirty Laundry - I am slightly tempted to change the title? Idk). I have the beginning finished, and I would say I am about 20% done overall, which is good considering that it's going to be a longer fic. But I really want to work on something else while I am working on it

I love working on shorter smut fics while working on a long emotional fic

And here are my ideas for that:

A Spencelle x (Fem)Reader smut. (I usually default to Fem reader, but if more people want to see a GN reader fic, then I would definitely do that too.) - I had so much fun writing The Perfect Brat and I fucking love the Spenelle dynamic - I feel like it's absolutely something that I need to revisit again. I have a mental image of Spencer tied to a chair with Elle and the reader taunting him and I feel like I need to bring it to life.

The Spencer Cane Smut that was mentioned in the last poll. I compared this to my Abby fic Love From The Other Side (aka the Golf Club fic) - where Abby fucks the reader's pussy with the golf club that she used to kill Joel. Because this fic would be Spencer fucking the reader with his cane. Because the idea wormed into my brain and I need to get it out at some point 😂

I would also love to write more smut for Emily or JJ (maybe both at the same time 👀 Jemily x reader would be so iconic). I do have some drafts for them, which I could post summaries of so people could pick based on those? Idk.

My only issue with putting these ideas into a poll is that Spencer is a grossly popular character, and I feel like putting anything with him in a poll automatically skews the results. And while I love writing for him, I would like the chance to write for some of the other characters who don't get as much attention in fanfiction. So idk what to do

I am also heavily considering opening general requests for shorter things like headcanons/MLTs/reactions. But idk

I want to quit a03 and just delete all my current fanfictions, i haven’t updated any of them in months. I’m tired lol. The main reason why is I haven’t been getting a lot of interactions on my recent stuff and Ik that’s not the point of writing fanfics but idk it’s a nice from motivation. I’m an attention whore, sue me.

What i’m asking i guess is how do u stay motivated??? I have a lot of ideas for things but no drive to make them a reality.

(You probably can tell who i am from this lol but its kinda embarrassing so i wanted to keep it anon)

Oh dude I absolutely get it, for real. While we ultimately write for ourselves, a lack of engagement is REALLY discouraging! I’ve said before that I went through a REAL mental struggle writing The Webs In The Rafters specifically, and that still stands. I had a lot of super nice commenters, and that helped a lot, but it was so, so, sucky to see no engagement other than the same six people. As grateful as I was for them, I really wanted more interaction. I’d see the comment count go up, but no new kudos, and I’d feel like I was failing.

I almost dropped that fic. The only reason I didn’t was my dearest boxwinebaddie regularly doing cartwheels in the comments and messaging me about the story. Encouragement from an author you admire helps SO MUCH and I want to be that person to someone someday!!! The community of ao3 can be toxic, for sure, but it’s so kickass to see the same handful of people in someone’s comms every time you read something from a certain writer!

And man, I am absolutely an attention whore. I thrive on attention. I may be an agoraphobic asshole with no friends other than my partner irl and I may literally panic so bad that I faint when I get spoken to, but we are HUMAN!!! Validation is fucking NICE!!! Being a person sucks absolute ass and confirmation that we’re doing something right helps a lot!

The only advice I have on staying motivated: I’m just fuckin insane. And I’ve said before that the ONLY reason I started writing was bc I had an extremely specific set of tags I wanted to see. I wanted to see more style injury recovery and at the time, a lot of the style fics out there were literally just boring high school aus or Stan being suicidal and I was like helll no let’s switch it up! So I assumed my mission of renovating that ship tag. I wanted sot style h/c with an ungodly amount of comfort? I was gonna have to write it. And that expanded to all aus. I developed the OrangeJuiceVerse specifically with the message of healing as the central theme. And it means so much to me. What I’m getting at is that your work really does have to have something there that’s important to you. If it’s just all random drama with no reconciliation, it’ll be really draining on you and fall flat in your mentality surrounding it.

Another thing is: if you don’t feel like updating, DONT! It’s fanfiction. It’s something you’re putting on the Internet for free. If you aren’t 100% happy with a chapter, there is no obligation to post it! Also, if you aren’t feeling up to working on a wip, mentally or physically, you don’t have to! Come back to it when you are!

On obligation, something I struggle with is my own self imposed habit of daily updates on multichapters. I usually go really wild when I start a new au, and I’ll write for it every day. But for instance, right now, it’s been a couple since I’ve posted a new chap on In The Truly Gruesome. And I have felt some guilt about that, bc I’ve sort of garnered this reputation as someone who updates frequently on multichaps, but I haven’t been feeling so great, so writing isn’t my top priority. A couple lines here and there are what I can manage, and that’s okay! Again, it’s fanfiction. Ultimately, it matters to us as the author, the story can mean the world to us, but we shouldn’t feel obligated to update, because above all we are PEOPLE with LIVES!!!

It’s also important to remember not to treat ao3 as social media. Yes it’s kickass to form a community of like minded authors who all support each others stuff, but it isn’t something that should be expected. And I CANNOT stress enough how important it is not to feel obligated to work on something just bc someone wants you too. I’m a hypocrite, yeah, considering I had no intention of continuing my TFBW oneshot “We Did It We Are A Good Team” until I had someone commenting on my unrelated works asking for a second chapter. I don’t regret writing ch 2, btw, like im really happy with it, but I did cave under pressure to some degree. And that’s not something we should do when writing. Write for YOURSELF and (unless you’re doing an ask book or something) NO ONE ELSE!!!

That’s what I got my dude. If you feel strongly about what you’re writing, by all means write it. If you don’t, don’t feel obligated. I hope this helped!

you dont have anons on on your main so: in theme with some of your other nice anons: one of my favourite fics of all time is an unfinished fic you last updated several ago and even though its a WIP i STILL recommend it to people as one of the best pieces of writing in my fandom. if i ever make a ship reclist, it will literally be the first fic on it. i think about it all the time. ive never sent you an ask about it because im also a writer and would hate to feel pressured into going back to a wip im not feeling anymore, so like, this ask is Not That, it's more a "your WIPs, even unfinished, are crazy valuable to the people who love them, and thank you for sharing them with us". even if you never finish it, i'll still always love it. it's also nice to see your passion for writing in fandoms i'm not in, and if i ever do get into them, your ao3 will be the first place i go to for extra reading :)

I had to read this ask aloud to my friends because I was so CURIOUS which fic you were talking about and I wondered WHY you didn't specify which one it was, and they were like "Bro, they don't want to pressure you <3" WHICH IS SO SWEET AND CONSIDERATE OF YOU???

But please don't worry about that!! Hearing people think fondly work doesn't make me feel pressured at all!! If anything, receiving glowing praise of a fic I've shelved usually just makes me want to read it back (I am incurably obsessed with my own writing). Often I'm reminded of how much I enjoyed writing it, or I'll think "Wow, this still holds up!" or "Oh, this sentence could be a little stronger..." And then I'll just decide to polish it up? One of the benefits of fic posted to AO3 being a LIVE document means I can edit it whenever I want, and that freedom to embellish and gradually improve my work makes me happy to go back to it.

Sometimes I'll even realize, "You know what? The writing hurdle I ran into back then isn't even an issue now, I know exactly how to wrap this up!" or even, "Oh man, wasn't the next chapter almost finished?? I should just tidy it up and post it as a thanks to my lovely readers!"

SO PLEASE... PLEASE, PLEASE, I'M DYING OF CURIOSITY... YOU CAN'T JUST SAY THAT AND LEAVE, I HAVE /GOT/ TO KNOW WHICH FIC IT WAS...!!!!!

Just some writing musings

Around the end of last year, I made the choice to stop posting most of my WIPs. I was starting to get more and more of the "When are you going to update" type of comments. and that was really cancelling out the joy i'd get from other comments.

It's been good in some ways...

I no longer feel like a content vending machine.

I'm not as stressed about whether or not readers will like where im going with a story.

I no longer feel guilty about irl getting in the way

For the WIPs I am still posting on ( the huge Sailor Moon series sequel and the SM / HP crossover... theyre so niche that I feel like people have been reading it so long that theres not as many update requests. the folks reading that have been with me through grad school. they know i'll finish it... and they do get mammoth sized chapters so I guess that balances out...)

But I have noticed that for the wips im not posting... Out of Reach, Unbroken, Universe to Bend, the rest of the Voyager rewrites... not posting as I go hasnt changed my excitement for them but dear god, It has tanked my writing pace.

Doing monthly writeathons with other writing folks has helped me fill in that motivation gap.

So do betas when i have them, to an extent (but betaing for me is a lot of work. i hate asking that of people).

Collabs have gone really really well - it's easy to get inspired when someone else is there going back and forth feeding your creativity.

But I seriously miss the inspiration / motivation boost that came from meaty comments. fangirling-comments, analysis-comments, questioning-what-would-happen-next comments, things-that-surprised-people comments, how-emotional-a-scene-made-them-in-public comments. I loved those discussions. and they really helped spark my inspiration for whatever the next scene had to be.

I didn't receive those comments very often though. so i do have to acknowledge that when they did help me write when life was busy, it was also not something i could rely on.

Writing is fun. Finishing long stories is hard. theyre a project. theyre work. theyre time and brain power intensive. Is feels ridiculous to say my hobby is hard and i still love the hobby, but it is true.

So back to the connundrum i've been at for a while. When I am low on time/energy to be creative: how do i make writing logistically easier, lacking outside inspiration or motivation boost? (will a physical journal help? phone reminders? scheduling writing blocks has been hit or miss) Or if i cant make writing logistically easier - how do i gain that motivator / inspiration to make it worthwhile? (writeathons help. betas when i dont feel guilty for how much effort that is. do i just make a private ao3 collection for WIPs and only invite readers who like to give meaty comments. that seems silly but thats a bit where im at with this)

For other writers (fanfic or otherwise) who struggle to write when theyre busy with irl. im curious what kind of solutions you have. bc i dont see life getting less busy or brain-power-consuming...

poets garden au my beloved:

Jake looked up as the bell rang, seeing a shorter man waltz into his store. He had a mischievous glint in his eye. Jake smiled and leaned on the counter.

“Morning! What can I help you with toda-”

He was cut off when a hand slammed down on the counter, he looked down to see a twenty dollar note sticking out from underneath the man’s hand.

“How do I passive-aggressively say fuck you in flower?” Rich grinned.

Jake looked at him for a moment before he laughed. “Fuck you in flower?”

“It’s a very valid request, thank you. And don’t people, like, you know. Say things in flower language?” Rich defended.

Jake shrugged. “Used to,” he said, ducking down behind the counter as he looked through the shelves underneath. Rich leaned to peer down over the bench.

“Some people still do,” Jake continued. “It’s just not very common. But-” Jake grinned when he found what he was looking for. He stood up again, placing a notebook on the counter. He began to look through it. “B has a collection of flower talk she made up. Let’s see…”

12. Do you outline your fics? If yes, how detailed are your outlines? How far do you stray from them?

Absolutely not. Not really. I have a vague idea sometimes and just write it. There's a reason attwt, poets fic, and the fae au have not been updated in ages other than the fact i hate attwt now and that's because i never properly planned any of it out.

to be fair, poets fic is a rewrite of an older fic so in theory the plan was already there i just had to make it smoother but i deviated so far from the original plot i dont know where im going with it. and it requires me to write more poems

the bapo au is easy since its following the timeline of an existing musical. and i think im definitely going to need to plan out regicide au in detail if i want it to turn out how i can envision it

21. Do you prefer writing chaptered fics or one-shots?

one shots. i usually just write oneshots and leave it at that. sometimes thay're one shot series, like the colour pallet series which are mostly one shots about different ships and colours. or all my ramblings about deities au (which are more like drabbles)

that is mostly because I dont plan out multi chapter fics.

that makes me want ros to be my friend!! (Ive been working on magical girl ocs because of my love for the genre, i think i might have too many wip because im planning on making a small animation as well for other stuff i like.)

That's more than fair! My little sister and brother are both on the spectrum (both have been tested for it, i haven't, my little sister stims a lot and runs around, my lil brother is more on the none verbal side unless it's something he likes, like sonic, kirby or mario kart). I know i stim as well (when the stardew valley update came out i was bouncing, clapping and waving my arms excitedly) its just lovely to see such attributes in characters.

please dont feel forced to check them out! Take as much time as you need if you want to tho! (Nausicaä has some of my fav creature designs in it honestly and there are lil apple people in stardew i needle felted some before)

!!! Yay!! Take as much time as you need ill be excitedly waiting for them even if you post them 200 years later, i don't mind i just wanna see more of your lovely art!

Ive done the same before! i like trying a bunch of different ways to make designs its always a bunch of fun to experiment, id reccomend trying if you also like just making random designs as well!

Aww thank you!! He had always tried to flirt with her before (he was just terrible at it) so she knew he was interested. She let him know she had feeling back when she kissed him on the cheek after he comforted her after a hard day (it made him happy cry and laugh as he hugged her tightly).

hello, i've run into a sort of first-world problem and i'm not sure if you can help but you've posted about taglists before, and i don't know who else i could ask.

on my side blog (@dont-talk-back-to-heapass), i started a project (not writing, unfortunately- it's a picrew) and i made a taglist for people who want updates on it. problem is, it's a very popular fandom and my post got a lot more traction than i thought it would. i now have over 50 people who want to be on the taglist, but that's over tumblr's limit. what should i do?

Fortunately, you're asking the right person: I have experienced the same flattering first world problem. Unfortunately, there's no elegant solution.

As you know, the tag limit for a single post is 50 blogs. My taglist for Always the Bridesmaid was at 161 people (and was still growing) when I was still accepting people for it. Here is everything that I have tried.

Tag them across multiple reblogs

Hypothetically, let's say that you have 60 people on your taglist. One thing that you could do is tag 50 people when you initially post it, and then tag the remaining 10 people in a reblog.

If you have between 50-100 people on your taglist, this is probably the easiest option that I'd recommend because all it takes is one reblog.

But personally, I had to reblog it 4 times just for my ATB taglist alone — and that didn't include my other taglists, such as people who wanted to be tagged for all my writing — and I felt awful about clogging up people's dashes with the same post 4 times. So I continued experimenting.

Pros: + Effective, simple and easy. + Works best if you have between 50-100 people on your taglist. Cons: - If you have 100+ people on your taglist, it takes a lot of reblogging.

Staggering your multiple reblogs

Because I felt really bad for reblogging the same post multiple times, I tried staggering out my reblogs. For example, if I posted at 10AM, I'd reblog with the first part of my taglist at 11AM, second part at 2PM, so on and so forth.

Pros: + People are less likely to see the exact same post on their dash. + You get a guilt-free bump to reblog it for people who may not have seen it the first time.

Cons: - People might think that they're not on the taglist even if they are because you didn't include them in a particular taglist reblog. - You still have to reblog within a relatively short period of time. Not a problem if you have up to 100 people on your taglist, but it can be a problem if you have more than that.

Tag people in the comments

A frequently overlooked place to tag people is in the comments of your post. There's one catch: I believe the tag limit for a single comment is 5 people. (Or at least it was, last I checked. I could be wrong if it's been updated).

Pros: + It solves the problem of clogging up people's dashboards and your own blog. + In my personal experience, it seemed to be more effective at actually notifying people than taglists. Many of the people that I've tagged in my reblogged taglists have said they didn't receive the notification, but a lot more people seemed to have received the notification when I tagged them here.

Cons: - It is a lot more work to tag a large amount of people in the comments due to the smaller limit. Might be a good option if you have 55 people on your taglist (that's only 11 comments), but if you have more it's really tedious. - It inflates your note count by quite a bit.

Make a sideblog and have people turn on blog notifications

This might not be super applicable to your picrew taglist, but I wanted to make sure I included this because this is what I have currently settled on doing. I didn't feel good about everything that I've explained thus far because no matter what, it was either a pain or intrusive on people's dashes.

So I ended up making a sideblog for ATB at @always-the-bridesmaid-wip. When people ask me to put them on the taglist, I let them know that they can follow this sideblog and turn on the option to receive notifications whenever I post something here.

I post my important ABT posts on this blog @pens-swords-stuff, and reblog all the "official" ATB posts (i.e., snippets, excerpts, intros, lore, artwork, etc) that I would've used my taglist for onto this blog. I don't reblog any posts that I don't consider official, since that's how I use my taglists.

If people have turned on notifications for this blog, people should receive a notification that I've posted something onto my sideblog in a very similar manner to tagging them on my taglist.

As for effectiveness, I'm not sure yet! I haven't been super active on writeblr since I created my sideblog. I had intentions to run surveys and such about the experience but alas I got busy and lazy. I'll have to report back later once I post more.

Pros: + You don't have to actually tag anyone, it sends a notification for you automatically so it's less work. + It's less likely to get buried in someone's tumblr notifications because it sends it in a different way. + It's more reliable. Tags sometimes fail, but in my experience, this has yet to fail for me personally. + Solves the problem of having to make several reblogs or comments. + It's a lot more user-friendly. People don't have to ask to be put on taglists, nor do they need to say something to get taken off a taglist. They can follow/turn on notifications and unfollow/turn off notifications whenever they'd like without notifying anyone or having to speak up. + Solves the problem of clogging up dashes/comments.

Cons: - For this to work, you have to make a separate sideblog for your taglist-worthy posts. - It may only work for those using the mobile app? When someone I have notifications turned on for posts, it sends me an app notification, not the notifications that you check on Tumblr. There's an option to turn on notifications for a blog on the desktop version, but I'm not sure if you actually receive them without the app. - You can't see whether people have actually turned on notifications for your sideblog. (You can however, see how many followers you have. And if people follow, I guess it still has the desired effect to some extent). - Going to follow another blog, and then turn notifications on for them is a lot of active steps. You might be losing out on someone who would ask to be put on a taglist, but wouldn't go to a sideblog, follow them, and then turn on notifications for them. - It's easier to ignore a ton of notifications on Tumblr, not so easy to direct notifications on your phone. This method works well for me since I rarely ever post here so I can reassure people that they will hardly ever get notifications from here. However, if you are a frequent poster it will be more annoying to the people who have notifications turned on.

I hope my experimenting proves to be somewhat helpful for you! It is a very fortunate thing to have so many people interested in your work, and it's also probably not a very common issue that people run into. But it can be a logistical nightmare with no easy solution. Congrats on having an eager audience, I hope you're able to figure it out!

(And of course, I am incredibly thankful to every single person who has expressed an interest in being on ATB's taglist. I did a lot of experimentation because I was grateful for the attention (if a little overwhelmed) so that I could try to find the best possible solution for both the people on the taglist, and all my followers who do not want to be on the taglist).
