reborn au: sometimes tori should be allowed to win. as a little treat

iwa fails team 4, which is just funny. i was debating minato just promoting itachi bc he'd have the missions for it, but actually i think it'd be funnier if he went and took a formal exam in a way that somehow pre-empts deidara from doing it? idk how that could work, but i think it would be Fun if both deidara and itachi won the tournament in their exams, and for that they'd have to take them separately

(it might make more sense logistically if itachi was like "why do i care? i'm an ANBU captain. i already have the paycheck/security clearances" and then deidara solos the next exam and itachi is like ".....wait i can't let him win" and solos the NEXT one. but also i think the laws of the universe are such that itachi should advance first, because it would piss deidara off)

anyway the point is. tori applies for R&D immediately and spends all her free time slinking around & then complaining she's not allowed to do her own projects

minato after she's tried some insane manipulations to take over R&D: (squints at her) yeah, because you're a genin. just apply to be a chunin?

it's not that tori doesn't think she can't take on any task they might throw at a chunin, or that she won't pass. akatsuki had her doing missions as a civilian, okay, she can handle chaos and responsibility and the associated danger. she just never, ever picks "fight" as her first solution to a problem... and the chunin exam tournament is just a fight. there's no changing parameters or redefining your win condition to force the outcome in your favor. it's just.... a fight. which she's iffy at

*special jounin in my mind is for people who have a specialized jounin-level skill but don't qualify for a full jounin promotion, because those people need increased security clearances and shit compared to a standard chunin. it's not EXACTLY a rank between chunin and jounin because there's a lot of variation in abilities within in it... like at this point tori would basically be an average chunin in terms of combat but also capable of making up s-rank techniques on the fly

You know, I actually am reading Tree's Roots atm bc the Sisters talk had me thinking if I fell for how it was written like a naive young adult idiot and low and behold, I have so much to complain about. Apologies of the long rant in your inbox if you don't mind. ^^'

I find Moonlight's "in-universe" explanation why they can't let a tom stay past 6 moons a bunch of bullshit, however that's more on the fault of the writing than anything with her. Seriously, "We let a tom stay longer than 6 moons, and then everything went to hell. We suddenly had to deal with the hardest winter and so many died as a result" What? A singular tomcat has no effect on a literal bad coincidence! What is this malarkey??? There's bad omens sure but there's bad omens and then there's using it as a means to essentially scare Earth to leave.

It's only AFTER all that that Moonlight then gives a more grounded part of why Earth can't stay: The tom that was allowed to stay grew too dependent on the Sisters, didn't know how to take care of himself because of this dependence, and his best means to survive alone was to become a domestic cat. That in of itself wasn't bad however when you really stop and think about it.

But let's say we take it further. Toms in the Sisters need this early separation bc growing dependent on the Sisters disrupts their ability to connect with the earth itself. The Sisters are connected to the sky, since they sing for the mollies in the stars and when toms die they DO grieve but are comforted with the notion that the tomcats that die are returned to the earth where they've always belonged and are welcomed. A tom that will soon wander should be focusing on connecting with the land he will travel, and focus on connecting with the spirits that they all share. Not doing that will disrupt his ability to connect, leading him to have a harder time being able to take care of himself bc of this struggling connection, or might not be able to connect to the land at all bc he's more focused on being dependent on the sky (aka the Sisters). Or, idk, SOMETHING like that. That dependence and inability to connect due to it should be the problem, not some bad weather leading to a potentially bad omen. How do the Sisters even know what omens are? Why does every single non-clan group need to know what these things are? Anyways... take away the "we're throwing male children out bc we're evilz and bad and inferior and sexist" thing and literally have it be the "This is your coming-of-age, learn it, live it, be the man you want to be, because you will have to learn to take care of yourself and have the means to now, that means just isn't us anymore, we love you and wish you love and happiness wherever we find you again" moment it should be instead. I wish we got that..

Earth already was having a hard time seeing spirits, he was a late bloomer, and thus would struggle to take care of himself as is had Root not came about bc those spirits are what essentially guide toms to learning the ways of the world and how to survive it. Literal Spirit Guides, and Earth didn't know how to actually sit down and relax to see them. Why is the idea of him becoming a domestic cat so bad? He was already insisting on staying... who knows how long tbh? Why is being in a comfy home taken care of by humans seen as some bane for these cats? Especially since he didn't have the means to take care of himself as is. He couldn't see spirits then, why is the idea of being in safety and comfort with a human UNTIL he does so terrifying? And then when he has to leave, after getting the genuine love from his female relatives and colony-mates (seriously idk how I thought Moonlight didn't love him when this novella came out but I'm READING IT AND SHE DOES we're just put in the perspective of a tom that for some reason despite growing up in this culture just ASSUMES THE SISTERS HATES HIM??? HUH?), he doesn't even wander the entire night leaving his kitten-hood behind, complains about being alone for ONE night, just assumes the Sisters and with it his mother abandoned him and never would've missed him(??? Despite people grieving differently hello?), IMMEDIATELY goes back and follows them, and then tells his own Sister Ice when he meets her that she along with the others don't care for him, even assuming that if they caught him before that that he would get attacked and driven out? Despite the fact that in SQH when they DO meet again Moonlight doesn't do that. She's literally.... just traditional like the rest of the Sisters. That's all it is. I am one to be all "yeah fuck traditions wooo!" sure but this society literally has its head on its shoulders for the most part. It knows what it is, it knows how itself works. It's flawed like the rest but that doesn't mean its badand nothing needs to be fucked compared to the Clans. Toms and their spirits are no different from apprentices being the charges of their mentors in the long run.

It's honestly why I wish we had a perspective that WASN'T Earth/Tree if we were gonna have a Sister's perspective. I want the perspective of a Sister who has to deal with the eventual wandering of her son(s) and see how she grieves for him despite the comfort that he will be fine because he has the earth itself to guide him. I wanna see how life in the Sisters is long-term for these mollies. I would love to see how Ice, in her perspective and life post-Earth time, came to terms with the idea that she's choosing to give up everything she knew to be with her lover without separation, and comforted with the fact that The Sisters will miss her but will gladly welcome her back if things don't work out. I wanna see the perspective of a young tom that, in growing up IN THIS CULTURE, is EXCITED for his eventual wander. Literally give him the BIGGEST wanderlust, wanting to see the world and maybe even exploring outside the boundaries of the camp as a taste of what he could have and the Sisters seeing his enthusiasm and being so endeared by it. I wanna see how, within the Sisters territory, this tom sees spirits and his relationship with them early in his life and how they train these toms through this eye. Let his wander be a life full of adventure and spirit! No ties to him anymore, he is his own cat and can do whatever he wants now!

But no, Instead, we are for some reason given the ONE CAT that, despite growing up within this very group, taught their ways, and thus only knows THIS life, is completely against everything he's lived up to this point, complains CONSTANTLY about this only life being how things are despite growing up this way and not knowing how outside cats are like to have this comparison, complaining about the only traditions he knows, resents his mother literally for sending him off on his coming of age mark like Snail and Chestnut were (they were fine being sent off btw, and Stream was also not worried about his wander) and assuming she abandoned him even though every other tom his age up to this point did not hate her and also she didn't fucking abandon him oml, even assuming she doesn't love him just because he was at the age of independence for his group and so Moonlight didn't need to baby him anymore, somehow is the ONE SISTERBORNE TOM TO NOT SEE SPIRITS WHEN EVERYONE ELSE HAS BTW, and thus is literally a plot device to deem the Sisters ways bad. Earth/Tree is a plot device, plain and simple. Bc there's no way in hell one singular cat somehow knows how to act like a xenophobic clan cat expecting the only life he knows with NO OUTSIDE PERSPECTIVE to change. None. I swear I could do a better job writing a cat with a non-clan perspective than the Erins...

Earth/Tree being a late-bloomer isn't a problem in of itself, I imagine chances like that are rare as hell to where the Sisters don't have a means to work around it without that risk of dependence, but it's not impossible to think about, it's EVERYTHING ELSE about him that's so damn wrong. And what's even more frustrating is the story team (fucking website people ngl I hate them) tried to write about how in Tree's article that he was a character they had all figured out from the start and that he's so complex and interesting... no, he's an outsider tom written with a xenophobic clan cat mindset in an instance that wouldn't happen and is whiny, sexist, and other words I can't think of at the moment. Tree's Roots could've been interesting, but no, it falls into the same pitfalls all the other recent novellas got only more offending bc it's from the lens of an outsider living in an Amazonian society full of women.

I can never get behind like. the weird outrage people have at the """"misandric"""" sisters because if you think about this novella for like five seconds, the bizarre misogyny and crumbling worldbuilding becomes very evident (as you pointed).

i know the gut reaction people have for characters who change their names and resent their moms, i know why ppl are so emotionally charged by these. but i find the takes these emotions feel just...kind of fundamentally useless analysis for a lot of reasons but that's besides the point.

CN is in his room angry because LB gave a "wrong" response when asked why CN hasn't been helping. Well idk maybe if he wasn't in his room fuming while watching the news and instead went out to help the question wouldn't even have been asked.

Since when does LB need to personally call him to come help. It's always been so they each separately notice the villain and immediately transform and go fight. Sure they might leave a message to the other to get there, but they still need to transform to notice that and why would they transform if not because they saw a villain.

Maybe instead of complaining when getting called out, CN should have done his job.

And no, him not being able to get to the fight because he couldn't get out of whatever he was doing is not an excuse, it's another reason why the CN miraculous should go to someone who's schedule allowes them to go out and fight.

We’d be saying the same thing about Ladybug if it was her with the cramped schedule--oh wait, we literally already do that.

Also, salt just in general but the audacity of “hey, you haven’t needed Chat lately so did you have a fight???” which is clearly baiting for drama from a literal superhero.

Malleus, Vil, Idia, and Leona as housemates and also ✨friends✨

They make fun of Crowley together, with the exception of Malleus.

Leona and Idia choke on their drink the first time they see Malleus polishing his horn while Vil nodded in approvals.

Don't you think that if Knightfall happens in the show, the community and Reddit would explode? knowing how their opnions about Cinder and Jaune are(at least some part), though that depends if they do Knightfall right or they fuck up in the pacing or execution.

I don't think they care lol. They committed to killing Penny (which made sense) and that obviously made a lot of viewers unhappy. People who don't understand why Penny didn't die properly the first time, and why she had to die properly. All that sort of thing. It just depends what thematic thread you're interested in following. But I think one of the last asks you sent me, we had a little disagreement over whether the show is following through on its ideas, and I think I have a different approach.

I'm not going to say I'm totally right all the time lol, I'm very prepared to be wrong, and to be quite honest in the case of BB they pleasantly surprised me, for instance. I had thought it made sense, and Yang's longing for Blake was unusual, and all of the stuff with Yang and Raven plus Raven/Tai made sense for a Yang/Blake romance. Idk, I felt like it made sense but I was uncertain if they'd commit. The Raven/Tai was a big thing for me when I was considering the ship, and this was an early notion (for me) of legacy themes, of course Salem/Ozma became a realised thing in V6:E3 lol. There was all the Beauty/Beast stuff, but I was less sure exactly how much they were committing to it then. It seemed to be more internal Blake stuff.

So yeah, I always reserve caution. But on that front, there were a lot of vocal Blake/Sun shippers. It was a horrible shipwar. It was terrible. They paid little heed to it, if anything they stoked the flames lol. I do wonder to what end Cindemption being seeded for as long as it has been, and to the audience eyes' since the V7 finale (like, two separate instances, there's the Cinder vs. Winter and Penny fight, THEN Ozpin's voiceover asking if you'll forgive them/understand why they did the things they did) is supposed to be rehabilitating her fandom perception along with Cindemption.

As I've sort of said, not to be repeating myself, but I reckon they don't care about causing a ruckus. Look at the people upset about Ironwood.

I do think Knightfall is possible to do well, and good Knightfall is probably contingent on good Cindemption, and good Cindemption is contingent on continuing to write her in an interesting way. Obviously they're my two favourite characters and I currently love the direction with the two of them, so I'm not complaining. Jaune has some meaty development, and Cinder's at her highest.

Although I've got to be honest with you. I'm not a very good person. Sometimes I want to live out the smugness of being a Knightfall blog this early in the canon, see it canon, and just bask in the satisfaction. That would feel really good. But I must put away ego and not be a bad person. I'm prepared for it not to happen as much as I am, if you know what I mean. I am willing to go with the story they're telling, I would just be disappointed if they went about-turn on their themes. There are just a lot of mechanical working parts of the story pointing in favour of Knightfall that it's too hard to ignore.

When I sit down and feel sad and try to convince myself out of shipping it, like when I'm thinking about the likelihood of Jaune/Weiss, I'm still just like... but that ship makes no sense. That ship breaks everything... all of the ships so far work to the themes and patterns I'm looking at, even BB which I didn't expect to happen. BB I didn't expect to happen partly because I was unsure for obvious reasons and I wasn't sure if they'd commit to that especially with the main cast, and then also there was some genuine Blake/Sun kind of baiting going on, because that's the anime-trope romance. Weird how all the anime-trope romances have failed but the fairytale ones haven't.

Knightfall is very fairytale lol.

With that being said though... don't you think Knightfall is actually a great way to legitimise both Jaune and Cinder in the eyes of fandom? Like, think about it: it gives something really important for Jaune to do, the thing I think is probably the most important thing he could do in the story and makes perfect sense for his character, and genuine interactions with her from someone who cares and isn't getting anything out of it would humanise her? Like, in a way it almost makes sense because it seems so unlikely, because they're characters with such particular... fandom reception, which I've talked about before, on many sides. It's almost like the perfect solution to showing the audience exactly why these two are the way they are lol.

To summarise: I'm not worried about fandom opinion and I want to be right always, all the time. I hope they do it well if they do it at all. To be honest with you I always thought Knightfall would be late, and Cindemption is being set up very early and as one of the most important redemption arcs in the show. But who nose. It could be even sooner than I thought lol.

Had three mental breakdowns this week and realized i do in fact kin sherlock motherfucking holmes. this does not bode well for anything in my life mentally I've diagnosed him with so many things

Oh boy lol you want the list I think hes autistic (undisputed honestly) plus also adhd but on top of that there's the manic depression and uhhh the bpd lmao I dont even think that's it those are just. the obvious ones

But yeah man's a fucking mess and a shit person but in the same way as me so 👍

Some highlights I thought were very funny:

The last thing about sign of four I do need to address is yeah, there's the Horrific Amounts Of Racism in that one and the whiplash hearing it is just ridiculous because they seem to be so knowledgeable in all other areas and fairly... politically correct, taking sherlock's original misogyny as a purposeful character flaw, but then they just mention someone indigenous once and suddenly its all parrotting racist propaganda and just... really awful shit. There's no way I'm gonna speak for the group that just got absolutely hate crimed here but anyone can tell the author just has no clue what he's fucking talking about and it's physically painful.

And I don't know, it's just so bad it seems out of character? Doyle's making these motherfuckers say shit that honestly, Sherlock would know better about. And especially Watson. Come on, you cannot tell me watson is mentally capable of being prejudiced against someone. Please do not make him that way.

I'm not sure how to handle it specifically, or what's the proper way I should handle something like that in a media I otherwise like. Is it ok to say Doyle was clearly a piece of shit on the matter and separate those characters from his bias or is that insensitive?

I don't know, I was Not a fan of it and I'm glad to see they've at least finally shut up about the guy

But anyway yeah, uhhhh onto the short stories because I'm trying to read those before I get to the final problem

Scandal in Bohemia was a fucking ride, first of all, before we even get to Sherlock's girlboss arc we have to discuss how gay the whole situation was and how Doyle's attempt at making them less gay failed spectacularly

Like he's all "ah yes I need to marry off watson and uhhh make sherlock ummmm interact with a woman so they dont look gay" but he does it SO BADLY that it makes them look EVEN GAYER

cause i mean, even the conversation they had about watson getting married back in sign of four was gay af, but how Doyle handled things afterward was in no way straighter.

Cause you know, the man kind of wrote himself into a corner with the fact of Watson narrating these stories. So Watson has to be around to witness them, and to witness Sherlock's own thought process rather privately, so he has to be around sherlock at night, a lot. But trying to come up with a reason for that happening just... it didn't occur to Doyle. He just went. Ah yes this makes sense. And it's Watson just like Sleeping Over At Sherlock's like every other goddamn day and every time his wife leaves town and having them basically still live that cute domestic home life but they have absolutely no excuses for doing it anymore. It's quite funny

Like it was gay already the way they interacted when they officially lived together but it was like, a necessity for them. Now it's not, Watson just comes over because he goddamn wants to, and it's hilarious to me.

Motherfucker shows up for ten pages, girlbosses her way around town, and changes sherlock's entire opinion of the female gender while still keeping him gay?

LIKE NO LOL SHES NOT IN ANY WAY A LOVE INTEREST AND WATSON GOES OUT OF HIS WAY TO SPECIFY THE FACT THAT IN NO WORLD WOULD THEY HAVE BEEN ROMANTICALLY INVOLVED BECAUSE. SHERLOCK. DIDN'T DATE WOMEN.

and she just. sends a letter like "dear sherlock holmes. you're a fucking idiot and i think it's funny that you lost. nice job tho mad respect" and sherlock just SHORT CIRCUITS

the king comes back a bit later like "hey Dude where's my Photo" and sherlock's like oh yeah uhhhhhhhhhhh about that and the king is like HOW COULD IT POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN THAT GODDAMN HARD i would have dated someone more noble if she wasn't so pretty i swear im on a whole different level from her

and then. GIRLBOSSIFIED SHERLOCK HOLMES RESPONDS "from what I have seen of the lady, she seems indeed to be on a very different level from your majesty" ABSEHHESHEFHHFES ROASTED

I'm sure there is a place to complain but I'm just so tired, in some defense, they were incredibly busy, but they were making people's meds as they were picking them up so idk why my dad's was the one that got pushed like that, I went through the long ass line and picked up what I originally thought was everything, they didn't say there was anything else and they made those after I got to the pick up counter, so I go out and dad is like yah no there's supposed to be more, so I go back in, wait in another long ass line and when I get there and I tell em I'm missing scripts, they tell me to go to drop off, so I go to a separate long line and wait then tell the lady that we're missing scripts, she tells me it'll be 20 to 25 minutes of waiting, mind you it's already been an hour or so, so I'm like sure whatever I'll be over in that corner waiting, an entire hour goes by, the pharmacy is starting to empty out and they're close to closing when a different lady asks what I'm waiting for, I give her the name and his bithdate, she looks it up then goes over and starts putting it together, start to finish they spent 5 minutes... I paid and left which is when I got to the car and saw my poor dad in bad shape, so I stopped and got him Wendy's cause he finally had some meds to help him not throw up all his food and I was too exhausted to cook, man was so out of it he couldn't muster the strength to sit up to put his seat belt back on, and I didn't have the heart to nag him about it. We got home and I sorted all his meds out trying to figure out what he needed to take now and what could wait, which is when I realized they originally didn't give us the 2 most important meds so if we had just left with what they gave us he'd be double fucked. So I made little labels for him and explained he needed to drink lots of water and how to take some of his meds, and after he fell asleep on the couch I went to my room cause I have a massive headache from all of this and I still have work tomorrow. Also in case I never told you, my birthday is a curse, and the closer to the day it gets, the worse things get. Happens every year without fail. Pretty suspicious that my dad has been absolutely fine through all of covid and as soon as it's close to my birthday he's sicker than he's ever been in his entire life. I'm a plague upon my family and everyone knows it. It's literally a running "joke" that my birth was a curse because most major bad events seem to coincide with my birthday and it's been like that since the day I was born. I came outta the womb bringing chaos and misfortune and it's yet to stop. Mayhaps that's the depression and anxiety talking but ya girl got a track record. Seriously it's every year and it isn't even like 1 or 2 events, it's usually multiple events that get progressively worse the closer it gets to the date, and usually things don't start to get better for me mentally till about mid to late February. Can it just be March already, I don't think I have the strength for this year. 😭💜🐼

:\ that sounds like a nightmare, I can't believe that. I remember you telling me about the birthday curse, though! I completely understand, I honestly think my birthday's a curse too. The only time I really celebrate it when I'm by myself :| let me send you some things! I've got some Art Stuff I either need to shelve or give out, and I know you're a bit of a maximalist when it comes to decorating.

I wasn't planning on talking about this, but ever since the trailer and the summery of episode 1 came out certain people have gone into overdrive. Pretty much all the same stuff they always say. "Hope should just dump Landon, he doesn't deserve her love and devotion" 😑😑😑 and "They made Hopes whole story just be about a boy. Why does Landon/Handon get so much screen time over all the other characters?" Etc etc.

Okay look Landon is the only one who's actaully earned Hopes love and devotion. Everyone else just acts as if they're entitled to it. With how they always treat her(very unpopular opinion I know but it's true).

Hopes story has never been all about Landon. It's always been about saving everyone else, doing what's best for everyone. Even if it means sacrificing herself and what she wants/what makes her happy. Season 3 was the first season she actively put herself and what she wants first(and even then she still was doing what was best for everyone else at times). And a part of that just so happens to be Landon because she loves him and he's the one who makes her the most happy. And in 3x05 when Hope was in the therapy box was a whole give a way. That she's just tried and done always putting herself last and sacrificing what she loves(ie Landon and what else she just doesn't want to sacrifice anymore) just to save everyone else. And I honestly don't blame her for some of the things she did in s3, not excusing what she did not at all. But at the same time I don't blame her.

Now what I'm about to say might upset some people but there's two reason why Landon/Handon gets so much screen time is bc 1. Landon is a lead and at the very core of legacies is Handons story, so of course they'll be getting more screen time. And I think 3x16 was trying to drive that home of a lot of people. As well as about a 100 other that have been shown/said throughout the show.

2. The other reason why other characters don't get much screen time or even a storyline is bc more often than not is bc the writers/showrunners just don't really care all that much for those characters. One example of that is Rafael. And as much as I love his character, you can just tell the feeling wasn't the same for them. Bc he was gone for must of s2 and when he was around they made him be all about his feelings for Hope. Same thing goes for the twins. You can just tell that they didn't really want to have them in the show in first place(even Juile herself said she didn't want the twins. But things change I guess). Because they've haven't been doing anything with their characters, they've done more with Cleo's character than they have with the twins. I think the most I've seen them do with the twins was the whole dark Josie storyline. The rest of the time their storylines have been about love interests. I'm not sure if I forgot any of their other storylines bc once s3 hit I just kind of stopped paying attention to their storylines(not bc I don't like their characters but bc their stories just kind of just keep going around in circles and I really don't want to watch the same thing over and over again). And idk if in season 4 they're going to start giving the twins and other characters more screen time/ more storylines but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't.

It’s just the same old thing with the antis, can they really not think of anything else to say? But yeah, everything you said. What is it Landon has to do to earn Hope’s love and devotion? You’re so right, he treats Hope far better than any of the other characters do, unpopular opinion or not, that’s the truth. He’s not done anything that’s made him undeserving of her love. And for them to even say that after he went his whole life without being loved is horrible. And I’m so tired of them saying Hope’s storyline revolves around a boy (especially when all most of them want is for her storyline to revolve around Josie), because exactly! They must not be paying attention to the show if they don’t see that Hope’s storyline has always been about her being the hero and saving everyone. Which is why them saying that Landon is all Hope cares about and all she thinks about contradicts her actions throughout the show when she has continuously been there for everyone. And yep, to the point where she has sacrificed her own happiness with Landon for the sake of everyone else. And yes, I loved Hope’s development in s3 because she was finally putting herself and her happiness first. And that didn’t mean that she no longer cared about her friends because, like you said, she was still trying to be there for them and do what was best for them too. And exactly, Landon is the one who makes Hope happy, and I felt so bad for her in the therapy box in 3x05. That really did say it all, you could definitely tell that she’s so tired and just wants to be happy for once. And same with in 3x10, when she said “we can never just be happy,” it never seems to end for her. And I don’t blame her for what she did in s3 either. And you’ve also gotta consider that everyone had pushed her into a position where she was most desperate and left with no other options. Plus she also didn’t even think Lizzie or Josie would be in danger in 3x08, and she believed they could make it until the dark magic started to infect them and then she apologized. But what she did still ultimately ended up saving Landon from the prison world, otherwise they may never have found another way if they hadn’t created a rift.

And very true about screen time for Handon. People still refuse to believe that Landon is the male lead despite Aria’s name appearing right after Danielle’s in the credits and Julie literally saying that they casted Aria to be the leading man of Legacies when he auditioned for TO. Both Hope and Landon are the leads of the show, and yep, their story is the main story, so obviously it’s gonna get more focus. And yes, that’s been made clear throughout the show.

It does seem like the writers don’t care as much about the other characters. And I love Raf too, don’t get me started on the way they treated him. And it’s so weird because it seemed like they had bigger plans for him at the beginning. It took them a while to find Peyton, if I remember right. And I thought he and Landon were gonna be the brothers of the show, it seemed like they were setting up a love triangle of sorts with them and Hope (not that I wanted that), but then, like you said, he was hardly in s2. It’s like they scrapped any plans they had for him and didn’t know what to do with him after s1, even though there was so much potential.

And yeah, same with the twins. But idk if Julie said she didn’t want the twins on the show? I just thought having them on the show, at least as mains, wasn’t always part of the plan. They had always talked about a “Hope spinoff,” no mention of the twins. Julie had said Hope and the twins wouldn’t be friends because of the age gap. And from 5x12 of TO, I’d guess they hadn’t planned on them being mains for Legacies at that point either, otherwise they wouldn’t have made the age gap so obvious. And they had no interactions between Hope and the twins either, yet they made sure to establish a relationship between Hope and Landon in that episode. So I do feel like Handon was always part of the plan and they most likely decided to have the twins be main characters later on. And that really does show because they don’t seem to know what to do with them anymore either. True, they definitely did more with Cleo last season than the twins, and I do feel like the dark Josie storyline was the last real storyline they had. And I agree, their storylines now mostly have to do with love interests, and they do feel repetitive or just like they’re not going anywhere. And people will complain about Handon being repetitive, but look at what they do with the other characters, it’s far worse. Despite there being some repetition with Handon, like with them being separated and being put through horrible things all the time, there’s still development and progression. But with the rest of the characters, I feel like there’s hardly any progression at all. I feel like they’ve even gone backwards with some of the characters as well, especially last season. I actually thought the writing for the twins, and all the characters, was pretty good in s1. I liked all the characters and was interested in their storylines, but now, especially after s3, I’m just not interested anymore. S3 really changed my mind about some of the characters tbh, mostly because of the way they treated Landon and Hope. So idk if they’re gonna give the other characters more screen time or better storylines in s4 either. But honestly, because some of the characters have kinda been ruined for me, I’m not even sure if I’d care much if they did give them more of a storyline. I’m really just watching for Hope and Landon at this point, ngl. But hopefully, for everyone else’s sake, they can do more for the other characters next season that other fans will enjoy.

Thank you for the question. Took a while to answer. This is a really complex one and my computer keeps freezing or remotely updating when I’m about halfway through composing an explanation, so I have to start over. I’m backing up this one ffs.

So...first of all, you haven’t missed anything. It hasn’t been explained. I just said there were a lot of reasons and they unavoidably have a complicated one-sided relationship.

It’s mostly for emotional reasons that they’re focused on Damian. They have logical ones for wanting to plan their approach carefully if they have the option, and they are somewhat leery of him in terms of personal direct violence, but their kneejerk aversion to the point of steering away from a potential safe harbor/backup because they’re trying to put off a difficult confrontation is all interpersonal anxiety.

Nuhum (9) and Chihaarum (4) were banking on fleeing to Batman’s doorstep in high distress to get them in the door, because Talia liked to call Bruce sentimental and they figured even weirdo clone children can play on that, if they’re running from assassins. (Haftum thought this was a dumb idea. The others’ opinions of it varied.) But once they’d linked up with Tim, even those two admitted that the gain of having strategy help from someone who actually knew the parties involved was a better bet than ‘looking pathetic and hoping.’

As far as wanting to avoid Damian particularly...they’re his spares. One of their functions in existing at all has always been in case he needed emergency organ transplants.

In canon Talia replaced a bunch of his squishy organs and his spine on separate occasions before we found out she’d gotten into cloning him; it’s comic book medicine so the speedy recovery/lack of need for anti-rejection treatment doesn’t necessarily mean anything, but in context the meaning seems pretty clear.

There was more than one clone made, and at least one had been taken to pieces before Damian knew there were any at all.

The septuplets have an exaggerated expectation of Damian’s influence with Batman, but also he’s just been this figure in their lives as long as they can remember. He looms.

They ran because Talia had finally started coming to terms with his defection enough to start talking about selecting one of them to train up as a new heir/possibly his destined nemesis on her bad days; one of her hesitations was over whether defeating the other copies would actually prove the survivor was good enough to put up against the Real One(tm).

They know how he was brought up; they know almost nothing about Batman or why Damian chose to stay with him, and they’re cynical enough about Ra’s managerial approach to think it wouldn’t take much to make for a better offer than remaining an Heir of the House of al Ghul. So no, they don’t know he won’t try to kill them to assert his existence and/or supremacy, and they know he’s far more dangerous than they are, one for one.

This ‘verse assumes the League of Deadly Assassins is, primarily, a cult, and that like most cults a lot of the energy applied internally goes to making sure the members are primarily dependent on the organization, its norms, and its leader, for emotional validation etc. Damian and his clones all need support to deprogram, especially since they don’t have any pre-cult sense of reality to go back to; they however as mentioned in an earlier ask have very different needs, because Damian didn’t have brothers.

The cloneboys’ indoctrination went badly in large part because of their unclear status within the League. They got a blend of the lessons and ideology intended for the elites and that meant for the disposable foot soldiers, and the inconsistencies there, combined with having one another for support and reality checks (because a tendency to not see them as separate individuals meant a certain sloppiness about keeping them emotionally isolated from one another) allowed them a more realistic view of the League than Damian had even a few years older than they are. But they are still little kids, and it’s all they’ve known.

So Damian is just...an enormous figure for them. It’s like...idk...if Luke had known Anakin Skywalker was still alive and had gone bad, except Obi-Wan was 500% more a dick, and talked about Anakin around him constantly and sometimes called him by Anakin’s name by mistake. Probably it was a mistake. Who knows.

Except with somehow massively more identity issues involved, and Batman in place of the Emperor, leading to much more nuanced conversations because Bruce is just a more complex figure than Darth Sidious, especially from the respective perspectives of Talia and Obi-Wan.

And if Darth Maul kept popping in and out and annoying Obi-Wan by distracting, er, I guess Owen Lars, who is now Ra’s al Ghul, what have I done.

(Maul is Tim. Analogy-Luke has never seen Maul, but he has been complained to about him. Talia doesn’t actually have nearly Obi-Wan’s Maul issues with Tim. Should he be Dooku? Somehow not dead? And then...Dick is represented by Maul I guess? And...Jason is Ventress??? This has gotten way too complicated. In irrelevant directions. Please ignore this entire parenthetical.)

Also Leia is there. Leia represents Haftum. He gets a whole Skywalker twin to himself because he’s just so consistently pissed off.

Regardless of how badly I tormented it, I think that analogy did a much better job than any of the essays I previously attempted to convey their perspective with, so I’m letting it stand.

Except of course Damian isn’t their father, but they don’t know if he’d be willing to see them as brothers either, and they’re not all sure they want him to.

Meeting Damian is just a really alarming prospect for a lot of reasons, and they’d rather a) have time to plot how it goes and b) give as little impression of weakness to him as they can. So they would really rather not have him come to their rescue just now, if at all avoidable. Tim offered them options.

Although in reality saving them would probably have helped to put them in 13-year-old Damian’s relative good books, because one of the more heroic aspects of his character s a proprietary sort of protectiveness over small creatures he has chosen to defend. But they have no way of knowing that.

Prompt: Anything funny with a serious undertone. Nagito’s luck and self hate, idk go nuts / fluffy hurt and comfort. Nagito’s arm, Hinata’s eye, kissing- the works

Author’s notes: It isn’t as fluffy as I meant it to be….. Like I went in for prompt 1 but for whatever reason I ended up frankenstiening these together into serious stuff and hurt comfort. Then saw what I did and was like OOPS. I hope you like it regardless! I do like how it turned out~

If Komaeda had to make a list of things he hated, like a top ten, his personal qualities would probably make up all ten of them. He hated his temperament, his personality, he hated his eyes, his voice, his hair, his face, his body, his cancer, his lack of tact,and most of all, above everything else (while all in a non-specific order) was his luck. His stupid, extreme-to-the-point-of-absurdity luck. His luck had kept him from getting what he really wanted from himself.

Would saying death here sound too cliché?

He had been set, for a very long time, on the idea that dying would be the best case scenario. He’d tried, before and after being diagnosed, to do it. To kill himself. But while the want was there, his luck (which to him felt like some kind of separate entity from himself, that had its own agenda) decided that it wasn’t going to allow it. Was it good luck or bad luck that he kept failing at dying, at getting what he wanted? Komaeda would say yes, but…

Things had been better, lately. A lot better. So much better that Komaeda was waiting for the bad luck to hit. It had to eventually. He didn’t deserve what he’d gotten. Hajime Hinata.

Hinata asking him out had to be the best bit of luck he’d had in his life. He still dealt with his self deprecation and suicide ideation: Dating someone can’t suddenly cure something like that. But Hinata seemed to get it. He was careful around Komaeda, and caring and supportive and Komaeda was absolutely terrified for him. Things like this didn’t last for Nagito Komaeda. Good things in his life always ended up gone or some matter of destroyed. His dog, his parents, they were all ripped away from him. If something like that happened to Hinata….

He was torn, between riding out his good luck with Hinata (which would be extremely selfish on his part, he thought) and leaving Hinata to save him from it. If Hinata died or got hurt because of him, he’d never forgive himself. Never.

So he made his choice, resolved his tear between the two options. He didn’t want to think about the opportunity costs of the whole situation, just rip it off quick like a band-aid.

It had started with a “Hinata, we need to talk”, to which Hinata had responded with a dubious “Okay?” and a concerned look. They’d sat down, and Komaeda told him that it “wasn’t working out” (a lie) and that he “didn’t want to go out anymore” (a bigger lie). Hinata had stared at him, eyes wide, and said nothing. When Komaeda had finished talking, and he looked at Hinata, he regretted his choice.

Hinata hadn’t been crying or anything like that. If he had been, Komaeda would have been surprised. Hinata cried at movies, but tended to be more serious when it came to real life events. He was just staring at Komaeda, looking almost blankly at him. He shook his head with disbelief.

“Y-you don’t mean that, do you?” The way Hinata’s voice caught on the words had punched Komaeda in the gut. He was so shit at people, why was he like this? “Never mind, you wouldn’t have said anything if you weren’t serious. I'm… I’m glad you told me. It’s okay. I wouldn’t want you to silently suffer through it. I know you would, you don’t like upsetting people like that.”

Why was Hinata so…. So good to him? Even when he out of nowhere broke up with him, Hinata still was supportive. Even when he was obviously upset and hurt, he chose to be kind.

Why was Komaeda like this? Why did he have to hurt Hinata? He felt so bad, he didn’t want to do that!

He had grabbed at his hair, trying to backtrack. “N-no, Hinata-kun, I’m sorry, I’m just…”

“Komaeda, you shouldn’t feel like you have to be in a relationship with me-”

“It’s not that, it’s just me being stupid-”

“-You aren’t stupid-”

“- and I really love you Hinata-kun, I just don’t want….. I don’t want you to get hurt because I like you!”

Hinata had frowned. “Why would that happen?”

“The Luck! My luck! It hurts people I care about! And even then, even if I didn’t have my stupid luck, I’m a terrible person, Hinata! I don’t know if you noticed, but I’m a piece of trash!”

Hinata’s frown deepened. “No you aren’t! Having issues and being a bad person aren’t correlated! And as for your luck, I’m not scared of it….”

“I AM!” Komaeda hated that he could be brought to tears by his own mistake, and that he let his luck and his fear control his life so totally, but what else could he do? “You could end up dead, just like everyone else I loved! I’m not allowed kindness, Hajime!”

Hinata had looked terribly put off, which Komaeda later learned was for a mixture of reasons, though the main one was that Komaeda was upset enough to use his first name. That was rare and it had surprised him. “But you deserve it! You deserve kindness. Just about everyone does, and you’re in the top percentage of said people.”

Komaeda had choked out a “no!”, but was cut off by a hug from Hinata. A kiss on the cheek. Soft words of caring and love that Komaeda wanted but didn’t think were owed to him.

“Listen, I don’t care about your luck, but if you’re scared of it, I’ll be more careful. If you have a way to avoid it, I’ll do what you say to. Okay? I love you a lot, Nagito.”

And that was the end of the conversation, because Komaeda didn’t know what to say.

He just cried into Hinata’s arms.

It was better, afterwards. Komaeda, who thought Hinata couldn’t get any more sweet, noticed that Hinata started giving him random words of encouragement about things Komaeda didn’t like about himself. Snuggling became more common, as did hand holding and dumb little dates. Little actions of comfort. He suspected this began because of his comments during the discussion they had had, but he wasn’t complaining by any means. It was nice, really nice. Spending time with Hinata always brightened his day. Hinata seemed happier, too, and that in turn made Komaeda feel better. Before the discussion, Komaeda tended to try (and often succeeded) to break off that kind of stuff. But he felt more at ease, now.

On top of that, Hinata began to invest himself in the research about Luck done at Hope’s Peak Facilities. When asked, he said he had simply taken an interest in the subject, but Komaeda knew better. He knew that Hinata was doing it to report back to him and try and make him feel better about the whole issue. Komaeda was thankful, but still worried for Hinata. Just because he understood it didn’t mean he was safe from whatever wrathful god decided they really hated or really loved Komaeda. Lady Fortune was fickle, but Komaeda wondered often why she chose a trash bag like him to play with. Hinata would always reprimand him for saying stuff like that, but that didn’t really stop him.

The final remedy that Hinata was trying was doing what he had said he’d do. He listened to Komaeda to avoid possible issues. Some bad stuff happened that barely missed Hinata, but it did miss. Komaeda wasn’t sure if this was a relief or something to worry about more. For now, though, it seemed his luck had hit a spot of calm for the two of them. Equilibrium, almost.

Komaeda put all his faith into hoping that it stayed that way.

Maybe he’d be lucky.
