“Okay, you know this is actually really stupid.” You complain, curled up in the backseat of Carole’s car. “Everyone else wants to sleep together, why can’t we?”
“You know how the guys are,” Ice huffs from the other end of the phone. “They’re turning it into a competition.”
“Yeah, and who’s idea was it?” You scoff. “Maverick’s. He’s single and an asshole, he doesn’t have any stake in the game, of course he would propose something like this.”
Something like this being, for your autumn break trip to a cabin, sleeping arrangements are all girls together, and all boys together. Despite the fact, that the trip is made up of some of the soccer team, and their girlfriends. Mav even thought it would be funny to have whoever caves first, buy everyone dinner on the last night.
You sigh loudly, ignoring Carole’s chuckle from the driver’s seat. Her and Goose finally got their shit together, and they’ve been happily dating since summer.
“And of course you won’t crack, because you love to win.” You whine pitifully, more to yourself than your boyfriend. “I’ll see you when we get there.”
You hang up and shove your phone into your purse, leaning your head against the window, watching a flurry of orange as you pass a multitude of trees.
Not much more time passes before you’re pulling up at the cabin, clearly the last ones there, if the amount of cars shoved into the dirt driveway, is anything to go by.
Ice, Goose, and Slider are quick to come out and help with the bags in the back of Carole’s trunk.
“Hiya honey,” Goose greets, before dipping Carole in a dramatic kiss. You turn to see Ice, and pout, before falling into his arms.
“Hey baby,” He murmurs, pressing a kiss at your hairline.
“Icey,” You whine. “Missed you.”
“Pretty girl.” He coos. “I missed you too.”
Following a week of mid-terms, you’d barely gotten to see your boyfriend. Both of you had stacked schedules with exams and papers, and Ice had a big game right before break began. You were looking forward to a long weekend with him, snuggled into his arms while you sleep, the way you hadn’t been able to.
His arms squeeze easily around your waist, and he lifts you a bit until you can’t help but smile. You fist your hands in the material of his sweatshirt.
“Was lookin’ forward to sleeping with you this weekend.” You tell him quietly. “I didn’t sleep well last week.”
“I know, me too.” He says, lips at your temple. “I’m sorry angel.”
“Not your fault your friends are stupid.”
He chuckles, squeezing you one more time before setting you down. He grabs your duffel bag and purse, waiting for you to shut your car door, before heading inside.
“Carole and I are sharing a room, I think,” You frown. “That’s what Marcy said in the group chat.” Marcy, Slider’s girlfriend, was also very upset about the sleeping arrangements, had coordinated which room everyone is staying in. Your boyfriend nods and continues in, before stopping at a room and gently setting your bags down.
You notice two beds, neither much bigger than a twin, but still an upgrade from the college dorm bed Ice had snuck in, to share with you countless times the previous year.
“Look baby,” You whine. “We could totally fit in here, you always cuddle up anyway.”
“I know, sweet girl,” He soothes with a kiss to your temple.
Carole comes in a second later, Goose rolling her suitcase while she spouts similar complaints that you had.
“Just because Mav isn’t getting any, doesn’t mean he has to ruin it for the rest of us. She huffs, crossing her arms against her chest. Goose barely bites back his snort, throwing his head back in laughter before Carole sticks a withering glare on him.
You nod in agreement, turning towards her. “That’s what I was just telling him, I mean why did anyone invite him anyway? He’s fucking annoying.”
“Okay,” Ice warns softly. “Not that I don’t currently share the sentiment, but Mav’s room is right down the hall and I’m sure he can hear us.”
You roll your eyes but oblige, leaning into him. “Are we allowed to sit together on the couch at least?”
Tumblr media
You packed everything you need for your night time routine and to sleep. Your face is washed, teeth are brushed, and now you’re scrolling on your phone, trying to chill before bed. Carole had long snuck out of your room and into Goose’s—you wish your boyfriend didn’t take everything so seriously. Goose laughed in Mav’s face when he proposed the competition—so it’s too quiet and you don’t have anyone to talk to. Right in the middle of your scroll through Tik Tok, your phone buzzes with a text.
I miss u
You smile, imagining your boyfriend curled up in his bed, missing you enough to send you text.
Come in
You respond.
Carole left. We can push the beds together :)
He sends back:
We don’t need that much room.
Less than a minute later, your door is being pushed open and your boyfriend, clad in boxers and an old crewneck is suddenly sliding in behind you, arms circling your waist.
“Missed you.” He mumbles into your neck, the tip of his nose cold against the skin.
“You’re not allowed to agree to any of Mav’s dumb bets, ever again.” You grumble. “Last time you had to bleach your hair and now this.”
“I know baby,” He coos. “No more, I promise.”

hi! can i request iceman x fem!reader where they’re on their first date and reader can’t get enough of how fine he looks and how good he smells, pls?
Dancing is the last thing you thought you'd be doing on your first date with Tom. Drinking, sure. Kissing, you could dare to dream. Sitting down at a fancy restaurant, maybe. And to his credit, you did enjoy a nice dining experience, but he'd led you into a little club afterwards. It isn't a bar, there's no reeling drunkards passed out on the dance floor. No, it's more sophisticated than that, a live band playing in the corner while couples dance together.
The music that's playing now is reminiscent of swing, and Tom is surprisingly good at the style of dance to go with it. You're taking his lead, letting him step and push and pull and twirl, all with that dazzling smile on his face.
"You're wonderful at dancing!" You marvel as he hooks a hand around your waist, pulling it flush to his own. It means you get a nose-full of his cologne, sharp and musky and something you want on your bedsheets.
"It's hard not to be when you're so wonderful to dance with," He croons, practically purring inches away from your face. His smile is almost more intoxicating than his scent, and you're lucky your knees don't give out. What your face does isn't much help, though, as it blooms into a grin so bashful that you have to duck your head to hide it from him.
"Hey," He chuckles, using his grip on your waist to maneuver you towards the side of the room, dancing coming to a halt, "That's not fair, I want to see your face."
He hooks a finger under your chin and lifts it so that his nose nearly brushes yours. You're even more sheepish now as he hums, "What is it, angel?"
"I don't know," You shrug, biting your bottom lip, "it's just- Well," You gush, "I'm having a really great time. And you're- you must be the most handsome man I've ever gone out with."
He laughs at the admission, a deep, sweet sound from his chest. You should probably feel embarrassed admitting it, but not enough to deny him the compliment, and you press on in case his grin will get any wider.
"And you smell amazing," You laugh, "letting him pull your waist closer to his, "I'm just impressed, that's all."
"Yeah? Well that's good," He muses, "'Cause you know I used this cologne to impress you. I was hoping," He bows his own head now, laughing towards his chest, "That maybe you'd put your head on my shoulder."
Your cheeks get hotter, if possible, as he continues, "Like this."
He smooths his hand up from your chin to your cheek, guiding your head to lay against his chest. It puts your nose in his collarbones and he feels your breath over his shirt. The music works with you, transitioning into a slower paced song that the dancers mirror. All of a sudden you're back on the floor, swaying in time with your head on his chest and his arms around your waist.
"So it worked?" He murmurs, carefully avoiding standing on your toes even though you're only inches apart.
"It worked," You press a quick kiss to the collar of his shirt and he feels it beneath the fabric, "I think I want to stay here forever, Tom."

Tom's eyes scanned the room as disappointment slowly filled his chest. He couldn't find you anywhere. You hadn't shown up at lunch, and you barely stayed for breakfast. During class you seemed so caught up in watch the instructors were teaching you had barely spoke a work to each other.
Hearing footsteps, he turned to see Hollywood walking past. "Hey Hollywood, you seen Y/n?"
Hollywood looked back at him and smiled a bit "Nike scheduled another training course."
"Another? They've already done two."
Slider shrugged "I know, but I saw them before they got into the jet, they looked determined to go up again."
"When did they go up?"
"About ten minutes ago, they'll probably be done any minute now."
Tom nodded in thanks as he left. He thought of how you had been acting recently, he frowned to himself. You had been doing more training courses than any other student in the last week, and taking less breaks. He had barely seen you eat anything, your smile was less bright, and your laugh quieter than normal.
He had noticed this change ever since you came back from a visit with your father. He knew your father was an Admiral, highly decorated, so he knew he expected a lot from you, what had he said that made you start working so much harder? You were already doing so much better than most. What else did he expect?
Tom only worried more when you didn't show up for dinner. He went to your room but you weren't there. And he didn't see you until later in the evening when he came to your room to find you again. All the others had gone out for the evening, and you of course, had stayed behind.
Knocking twice, he held his breath as he waited for your voice from the other side. Hearing you softly call out, he let out a small breath of relief before walking in. Seeing you sitting on your bed, he immediately felt his chest tighten. You looked exhausted, and you were still in your uniform.
You smiled at him as you set down your notebook, but your smile faded when you saw the look on his face. "What's wrong?"
He shook his head softly as he looked you over "You." You frowned in confusion and he continued "You look exhausted Y/n, what are you doing to yourself?"
He saw your face change rapidly from realization, to dejection, to anger before you shook your head softly as you stood up, throwing your notebook on your desk. "I'm fine."
He scoffed a little "Clearly not, you look like you haven't slept in days, and what is this about you doing more training courses?"
"What I'm not allowed to?"
"I didn't say that, but Jesus Y/n, you're gonna kill yourself, have you even eaten today?"
"I'm not a child Tom, don't treat me like one." You spat.
Tom let out a bewildered sigh as he turned away from you momentarily, rubbing the back of his neck. Turning towards you again he took in a deep breath "I'm not trying to treat you like a child Y/n. I'm worried, you're gonna overwork yourself to the point of no return."
He saw your face fall as you looked down at your feet "You don't get it." You met his eyes and he felt his heart twist, seeing your eyes growing misty "You don't have to over work yourself, because you are already the best. Your expectations are your own, you don't have to deal with the condescending lectures and the constant 'you could do better' from your father. You don't know what it's like to be looked at like you aren't enough." Letting out a shaky sigh you sat back down on your bed.
Tom watched you in silence for a moment before he walked over to you and knelt down in front of you.
He met your eyes and shook his head softly "I'm sorry." He whispered. Reaching up, he gently wiped his thumb under your eye, wiping away a tear that had begun to fall. "You're right, I don't have to deal with any of that. But Y/n, I'm jut worried about you. I hate seeing you like this. Taring yourself apart for someone who will never appreciate you for who you are. You are in Top Gun for a reason, you are better than most at what you do. He should be proud of you, like I am. You don't have to prove anything to anyone, even him. You are more than enough. He's the one who should do better."
You smiled softly at him as you let out a soft sigh. "I'm sorry I yelled at you, you didn't deserve that. You were right I am exhausted, and hungry." You let out a soft chuckle.
Wrapping his hand around yours he brought it to his face and pressed a kiss to the back of your hand. "Then how about this. I go get some food, bring it back here, and we eat together. We relax, talk, anything but work. And then you get some sleep. No arguments."
You smiled at him and nodded your head "I think I can do that."
He smiled "Good." As he began to stand up, he quickly pressed a kiss to your forehead. "Don't you dare open up that notebook while I'm gone."
You giggled softly "Yes Sir."

Hi!! I was wondering if I could request a fluffy one shot with iceman from top gun?? I was thinking a morning after and reader is kinda unsure of what is going to happen but Tom is super sweet and cuddly. Love your writings!!!💕💕
Morning After
Tumblr media
Summary: Worries flood your mind after your first time with Iceman. You had been told to stay away from Navy pilots after all. Luckily, Ice makes how he feels about your relationship clear.
Warnings: mentions of sex, kissing, doubts about relationship (I guess)
Word Count: 2.1k
Tumblr media
Plenty of people had warned you about the Navy pilots before moving so close to Top Gun. You were well aware of how they swept women off their feet one day only to leave them the next. Rinse and repeat. Yet, you moved anyways, into a small, one-bedroom apartment. It was cute, had a balcony that overlooked the beach, and was extremely close to the Hard Deck. That was where it all started.
Your friend introduced you to the beach-side bar one Friday night. You weren’t looking for a Navy stud to take home. You just wanted to have fun.
After a round of billiards, you retired to the bar as your friend “went to the bathroom.” As she walked away, the man in uniform she had talked to while playing pool joined her, and they exited the building instead of turning left into the bathrooms.
A beer hardly took the pain of being ditched away. What a nice introduction to the city: your friend, and ride, leaving you stranded at a bar. At least it was a short walk home.
It was then he caught your eye. Across the bar, a blonde man wearing sunglasses and intensely chewing gum inside was looking in your direction. He lifted the glasses from his eyes when he spotted you and winked once they were finally off his head. You rolled your eyes. Another pilot. How could your friend have fallen for the other man's tricks?
The man’s eyes stayed glued to you as you quickly drank your beer. The sooner the golden liquid was gone, the sooner you could walk home. You glimpsed across the bar again. The blond had disappeared. Your eyebrows scrunched in confusion as you checked around for the mystery man.
“Oh my God,” you breathed, flinching in surprise. He was right next to you, leaning against the clean bar-top. A cheeky grin spread across his face.
“Did I scare you?” he teased, his facial expression unchanging, “Or are you just that surprised at my good looks?”
“No, you surprised me, that’s all,” your cheeks began burning. There was no doubt they were now a deep pink color. You grabbed your bag and began standing, but the blond blocked your way to the door. Every time you stepped in a different direction, he followed. Eventually, you groaned and looked him straight in the eye as he stood in front of the exit door.
“Can I at least get a name?” he asked.
You sighed and brushed a strand of hair out of your face. The man was handsome with his beautiful green eyes and stunning face, you had to admit but his ego was clearly enormous. Maybe if he could keep it under control. But that would never happen. He was one of the infamous Navy pilots, after all.
“Y/N.”
“A little louder, please?” he said, bending down slightly and tilting his ear towards you.
“Y/N!” you practically shouted. The rest of the bar was too full and rowdy to hear your little scuffle. The man chuckled and resumed chewing on his piece of gum.
“I’m Iceman.”
“Ha, ha,” you said sarcastically, deciding to humor Iceman’s attempts, “What’s your real name?”
“Why? You’re not into pilots?”
You sighed for what seemed like the thousandth time in the evening, “No, I’m not. Now, tell me your real name or I’m walking out the door.”
“I’d like to see you try,” Iceman taunted. He crossed his arms but, when you didn’t move, he continued, “The name’s Tom Kazansky.”
“Great,” you stated bluntly, “Now, Tom, I would like to go home. Let me through, please.”
He begrudgingly returned his arms to his side, allowing you to walk through the exit. His voice called after you once you walked out of the building. You ignored him the first time, and the second, but the third time you turned around.
“Yes?”
“At least let me walk you home,” he appealed to you. His ego was starting to fade.
“I think I’m fine, thanks,” you replied, but you didn’t turn back around yet. You wanted to hear his response.
“C’mon. You can’t walk home alone, especially this late.” he checked his watch and then made eye contact with you again, “it’s almost eleven.”
Your eyes darted around the night. It was incredibly dark and the street lights weren’t helping. There were plenty of spaces someone could be hiding in, plenty of spaces you could be taken to...
“Fine,” you said. It was your turn to cross your arms when he paused in disbelief, “You coming?”
Iceman hurried to your side and, after casually throwing his arm around your shoulders, you began making your way back to your apartment.
To your utter surprise, the walk was nicer than you expected. The conversation flowed smoothly, although it only lasted for about ten minutes. You couldn’t help but ask about his flying escapades and he happily obliged, detailing the most daring missions he’d been on and the training he did. It didn’t occur to you that his stories may have been a tad exaggerated.
Once you were at your front door, your opinion of Iceman had practically done a complete 180. Despite his ego, he had treated you kindly even though he knew he wouldn’t be reaching third base that night.
“Thank you for walking me home,” you said, turning around in your doorway. He was standing across from you with his hands behind his back. He looked innocent outside of your door. Nothing like the man who had tempted you across the bar just twenty minutes ago.
“It was no problem,” he replied, “I’ll see you around.”
“Yeah, definitely,” you nodded, a light blush returning to your cheeks, “Good night.”
“Good night.”
You returned to the Hard Deck without your friend the next night and the next. Suddenly, it had been a week of going to the unruly bar. The reason was to see Iceman, of course, but you couldn’t admit that. At least, not yet. Each time, you played the same game of eyeing each other across the bar. Then, as soon as one of you was about to leave, the other would catch up to them and “walk them home.” It was truthfully just a stroll to your house after a couple of beers.
Several times during your walks, you found your eyes wandering up to your escort home. Man, was he hot. Thoughts drifted into your head. At first, they were innocent: what it would feel like to run your fingers through his hair, to hold his hand, to feel his lips on yours. But, whenever your dreaming would take a more explicit turn, Iceman would notice your staring and you would be interrupted.
“We can’t keep going about this,” Iceman finally said the fourteenth time (fifteenth? You weren’t sure at this point) he escorted you home. There had been plenty of unofficial bar dates where a friend insisted they drove you home instead. Those were your least favorite days, for obvious reasons.
“Going about what?” you asked innocently. This time, your hands were positioned behind your back, “What do you want to change?”
“You know what,” Iceman took a step closer to you. You could feel his breath on your skin, sending goosebumps down your spine.
“I’m not sure I do,” you teased, a surge of confidence rushing through you. You had gotten to know Tom. He wasn’t one of those Navy pilots that people gossiped about. Maybe he was in the beginning, but now.. now you were in the clear, “Why don’t you show me?”
Iceman chuckled and took another step closer. His face was hardly inches from you. He bit his lower lip sensually, his eyes darting between your mouth and eyes. Eagerness was building in your abdomen as you leaned in as well. To your past self’s dismay, you had been waiting for this.
In a moment, Iceman’s lips were crashing against yours in a desperate fever. They were just like you imagined them. Rough, but passionate, like he had been harboring the same thoughts about you that you held for him. Both of you were stumbling back into your apartment. After slamming the door behind you, Iceman wrapped his arm around your hips, picking you up and carrying you to the bedroom as your hands began tugging at his shirt.
You disconnected your lips for a second, taking a breath of air, “Are you sure about this?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?” he answered before placing his lips on your once again.
xXx
You awoke early the next morning. Faint sunshine was streaming through your window, illuminating the room in a gentle glow. Your covers were a mess. The clothes you had worn the night before were thrown haphazardly on the floor, along with some pillows. Everything seemed perfect. Too perfect.
Thoughts began flowing through your head. They were unlike the pleasant ones that filled your mind before. They were doubtful, worrying. What was going to happen now? You glanced at the man sleeping to your right. He was so peaceful and calm. What would happen when he woke up?
The words “Why wouldn’t I be?” kept returning to your mind. Was he actually unsure? What if he didn’t actually care? Were you just another one-night stand to him? You had only known him for a month or so, too. You didn’t doubt that Iceman would play the long con for a pretty face. The thought that he had done that to you made you sick.
Suddenly, you felt something tugging at your waist. Iceman’s large arms wrapped around you, pulling your body close to his. He laid his head over your shoulder and began placing small kisses along your neck.
“Good morning,” he mumbled in between lazy kisses.
You hardly heard him. You were too lost in thought to process any noise outside of your brain. Was he buttering you up to drop you like a rock not minutes later? He had probably put his clothes on already and was only still here to tell you he would never see you again.
“Good morning,” Iceman said a little louder. He stopped peppering kisses down your neck, “How’d you sleep?”
“Fine.”
“You look beautiful.”
“Thanks.”
Iceman frowned and unattached one of his hands from your waist. He propped himself up on his elbow, his other hand still laid across your stomach. You turned to lay on your back and stared at the popcorn ceiling, refusing to meet Iceman’s gaze. While your worries weren’t confirmed, you were almost certain they would be soon. You had fallen for a Navy pilot. You did what everything had instructed you not to do.
“What’s wrong?” Iceman asked, his fingers drawing circles around your stomach.
“Nothing,” you said quietly.
“You’re lying,” he stated. Iceman took his hand off your stomach and held your cheek gently, guiding your face to look at him. His eyes scanned your face for any sign of what was troubling you.
He sighed, “You know that I love you, right?”
“I bet you say that to all the girls,” you said, quietly laughing to yourself at the end.
“I definitely don’t,” he scoffed, getting off his elbow and wrapping his arms around you again. He dragged you across the bed so he was spooning you from behind, “In fact, you’re the first person I’ve said that to in a long time. What made you think that?”
“I don’t know. Everybody warned me about Navy men when I moved here and I figured you wouldn’t really care about me.”
“What? I would never treat you like... however people told you Navy pilots treated women. I don’t know what would happen to me if something bad happened to you. I- I care for you a lot, Y/N, no matter how big my ego is,” he said. You could sense the cheeky grin growing on his face.
“Oh, so you’re self-aware now?” you joked.
“Mhm,” Iceman murmured, holding you tighter than he was before. For the first time since you awoke, you realized how comfortable his arms felt around you. It was like they were perfectly built to fit your waist, “I mean it when I say I love you Y/N. I hope you love me back.”
You twisted around in his arms to face him and looked him in the eyes. They were soft, unlike the night before when they were eating you alive. You couldn’t help but smile. He loved you. He really did.
“How long can you stay until?” you asked.
“As long as you need me to.”
“Good,” you said. Before joining your lips in a slow, much-needed kiss, you added, “I love you, too, Tom.”

Would you ever consider writing about a different path Ice and Mav could take, one where they choose to leave the Navy and pursue a more open relationship and civilian life? Thinking it would be easier but maybe the sacrifice to their careers brings its own challenges?
(hi, jan 2024 me here, this was an ask that I answered when it was sent in in May 2023 & didn't post because I felt I actually answered it fictionally in the "icedad" one-shot the week after [and you can obviously see how these thoughts affected the writing of other pieces like "tremors & aftershocks"], but I still mostly agree with this take [though it's a little overgeneralizing] & I think it sums up a lot of my final "meta" modern-military-theory thoughts on ice & mav & their relationship, so im posting it now before I post the compacflt masterpoast)
see,… the thing is, i just… can’t see that happening!! i have no idea how to write that!!! Maybe i really do have a lack of imagination. But i can’t see that happening for a number of reasons. So short answer, no.
Long answer (and it’s long):
1. lame reason to start out, but it, uh, it’s canon that ice ends up at O-10 and mav ends up at O-6. not saying that im beholden to canon obviously (my mav ends up at O-7 and my ice ends up alive) but I do base my characterizations of them on the implications of the political struggles of both their careers so… taking away ice’s fourth star is basically starting from square one wrt my characterization of him. which is a lot of work. i could start from the beginning with a top gun 1986 ice who knows he’s gay—that would be a fun AU (i think other people than me have definitely done that better, though—I’m a one-trick pony). So if that’s what you mean then disregard the rest of this post. but if what you mean is a divergence from my existing work (i.e. homophobic/rank-climbing ice&mav) then… yeah, can’t see that happening, for further reasons below.
2. wrt my characterization of him: it’s based on a broad historical overview of armed service officers and the expectations of their careers. in my view, high-ranking officers aren’t after power—or maybe they started their careers wanting power, but somewhere down the line, it just becomes an expectation. if you do everything right and follow all the rules, you are expected by the institution to lead, whether you want to or not. That’s just the pipeline. at some point you start losing agency. which is what I mean when I keep saying ice doesn’t have a choice in advancing his career (besides the meta fact that this is fanfiction and canon demands that he have 4 stars lol)—high ranking military officers are continually and continually groomed for bigger and better positions; and the longer they spend in the military, the harder it is to leave that lifestyle for something else. And with ice’s canonical (and characteristically INTEGRAL, as I mentioned a week or so ago) refusal to rebel against the wishes of the navy as an institution, plus this historical expectation to lead placed upon the shoulders of excelling officers, I really do think ice is destined for four stars & nothing less, even if it gives him chronic depression. It’s his highest priority not because he wants it to be, but because…it just is. that’s how the institutionalized system of advancement in the military works. it just is. it has to be.
3. I mentioned in this post that I can’t ever see a foot in the door with them talking about their relationship unless maverick dies and is resurrected, and I feel the exact same way about them & their retirement plans. There’s a lot that ice and mav don’t talk about: the biggest one is obviously Goose’s death, the foundation of their relationship; but also their love for each other obv, what they did to rooster, AND their careers, which have to end at some point. Them talking about everything is totally inevitable, it was gonna have to happen eventually before they died, and I think one foot in the door MIGHT have been them eventually talking about retirement (someone sent in a prompt asking for this exactly & i am brainstorming it furiously) but before the Navy FORCES them to retire… i think they would studiously avoid talking about it. For a couple reasons: a) what does retiring with each other mean? living in the same house until they die together? hard to do if you’re just good friends. talking about retirement is tantamount to talking about Them. and b) what are they gonna do outside the navy? Ice has a lot of options, as I mentioned in the slider one-shot—general/flag officers are SUPER sought after in leadership/intelligentsia/management positions post service, so maybe if he were offered a crazy cool civilian position somewhere in San Diego in like the 2000s he would quit the navy for it… but what about maverick? I have no idea what a non-navy mav would do. Civilian airline pilot? Hoo boy. I think he’d hate that. I could maybe see emergency helicopter pilot, lol, or race car driver (i just watched days of thunder can you tell?) but none of the above offers the institutionalized honor the navy does (that, as a reminder, he *killed people* to obtain in the first place). I suggested his test piloting expertise would make him an attractive technical advising candidate to A&D companies like Boeing, LockMart, GD, etc. so that might be one option. But it might have been kind of a touchy subject for him before he racked up the expertise he’d need for those high-level civilian positions… the navy was kinda his only option. So they wouldn’t talk about it because it might hurt his feelings.
4. The biggest reason: again… open rebellion like rocking the boat by quitting the navy to be in an open long-term gay relationship, in upper mil brass ranks, and even retired upper mil brass ranks, just… isn’t done. And REALLY wasn’t done in the 2000s, when i think the scenario in this ask is positioned. And it’s not like “oh but whatever who cares about the navy, ice and mav are in love, they deserve to be happy no matter what, they should do what they want, fuck the navy…” no. Ice and Mav care about the navy. Clearly. Canonically. By necessity. The military requires cohesion and on some level repression of individuality & personal expression to FUNCTION, even when you’re retired. Yes, maverick certainly strains against that repression (which is why you Could spin top gun as an anti-military franchise if you were desperate enough), but he rebels through his ACTIONS (stupid plane maneuvers) not through his personal IDENTITY. his personal identity (headstrong overtly masculine white male pilot, whether gay or straight who cares) is NEVER challenged throughout the franchise (i.e. no one really challenges his masculinity specifically) & his personal identity does not POSE a challenge to the navy. Both he and ice in their outward-facing personal identities really fit in quite neatly to the navy’s overarching identity & contribute to the navy’s cohesion in a way that is favorable to both their careers and the establishment. Lack of imagination or not… i can’t see a universe in which Ice and mav would actively WANT to rock the boat and wreck the navy’s cohesion and their reputations for an open relationship and definitively rebellious personal identities, with the obvious caveat being Maverick’s death recontextualizing both their priorities (yes we’re in love AND we’ve finally proven ourselves to be ultra-capable officers regardless of our sexuality so no one has a license to judge us anymore etc.).
And also, they’re not enlisted seamen. Nor are they mediocre officers who have the luxury of fading into obscurity. Things are different when you’re that high in the ranks, and when your job publicly matters more. sorry, but even post DADT (probably until about biden’s election), an open relationship would end their careers. They might not be fired, but they’d never be promoted again. Too much of a liability getting subordinates to still respect them, from the higher-ups’ perspective, especially if there are other qualified candidates who fit the navy’s core identity better. Like—sorry. This is such a jaded oversimplification. But if you rock the boat like that (i.e. break the service’s united front to be individualistic in a way that does not match the service’s overarching identity), from the perspective of your officer peers, you simply are a bad officer. Being an open individual in a job where you are required to fit in and represent your service is not your job. You are not doing your job well. Straight-up. Even if you’re retired. I met US Army 4-star gen. David Petraeus (retired obv) in February—he led the successful-ish surge in iraq and Afghanistan in the mid-2000s—and he’s STILL a laughingstock for his disastrous affair with his biographer a decade ago, even after he retired from AD service. That’s what people remember him for, not the fact that he was one of our only successful commanders in any of our Middle East campaigns.
Tumblr media
Something like that might be one of ice and mav’s worst fears—being known for their affair/scandal instead of the institutionalized honor they’ve fought and killed for. That kind of thing just Isn’t Done. It's bad taste. You have to keep it quiet. If you’re an officer representing the service, you have to represent it well & according to the service’s preconceived identity, even in retirement. (see, for another shitty example of "not fitting in" even in retirement, Lt. gen. Mike Flynn [his whole scandal is actually kinda geopolitically relevant to my fic if you squint lol] whom everyone fucking hates)
To summarize: i hope I’m not mischaracterizing your ask when i reframe it like this—would you ever write ice and mav without the institutionalized pressure to advance in rank and conform to institutional norms?
and yes, I would (and will if you ask—it looks like this: ice & mav meet & fall in love & it’s boring and fine. end of story), but I guarantee you someone else already has. I’m all about interrogation of institutional norms here. And i think until maverick dies & comes back from the dead, there is absolutely no *REALISTIC* incentive for ice & mav to leave the navy and/or have an open relationship. Like it’s just not possible. Idk how else to say it.
#which is like the whole point of my fic right. this is exactly what im trying to say with the story as a whole#these are flawed institutions stuck in their ways and ice as an officer REPRESENTS that flawed institution stuck in its ways#until real life (maverick dying) gets in the way and makes him reevaluate his priorities#and the truth is—his 1st priority (loving maverick) is absolutely incompatible with his 2nd priority (advancing his naval career)#for the reasons listed above#so he quits!#but just because he quits doesn’t mean he doesn’t still represent the navy! that’s the curse of officership#per the slider oneshot: You can’t ever retire once you get any stars.#unfortunately in a realistic world Ice really DOES owe the navy his discretion. that’s how it works.#tom iceman kazansky#pete maverick mitchell#top gun#top gun maverick#icemav#asks#edts notes#the thing with petraeus though is that his affair was notable bc he leaked a bunch of classified info to her#so not the best example but it was still cool (in like a oh you’re a historical figure sense) to meet him so I’m bragging abt it#(see tweet I just added)#additionally: the military is changing! in this universe it would be young upstart officers like rooster/hangman who contribute#to the liberalization of military officer culture!#but that kind of change Is Not happening in the 50s-60s cadre of upper level officers. At all. Ice included.#anon let me know if this wasn’t what you meant in your ask.#& feel free to disagree/argue with me this is just my view#lol the DOD just banned drag shows in the military#^ these tags are 7 months old now

How do I say goodbye?
It was a pleasant afternoon, the hot sun made cool by the breeze blowing in off the ocean. The kind of afternoon that made you want to turn up your music to just this side of too loud and roll down all the windows as you drove, which is exactly what Ice did. He’d made up his mind to suggest dinner outside on the back deck that night when he pulled into the drive, smiling when he saw Maverick’s bike.
Spinning his car keys on a finger, Ice stepped into their small house, greeted by a gentle blast coming from the AC. Keys in the bowl, bag on the hook, shoes off, it was a well-practiced dance Ice performed with utmost grace.
“Nice day, huh Mav?” Ice called out into the suspicious quiet of the house. “Mav? How was your day?” He tried again, but still nothing. Looking around the door frame into the living room, Ice finally found the other pilot. “Mav?” Ice called out softly upon spotting him.
Stepping closer, Ice took in the sight before him. Maverick was sat on the edge of the couch, the landline held limply in his hand, eyes unseeing. As Ice neared, he could hear the quiet buzz of the deadline through the speaker of the phone. How long had Maverick been sitting there?
“Mav?” Ice knelt down and placed his hand on Maverick’s knee, ducking his head to try and look into his eyes, but Maverick only looked through him. “Pete-” It was the use of his Christian name that cause Maverick to stutter out of his stillness.
“Ice?” His voice was hoarse.
“Maverick, what happened?” Ice gently lifted the phone out of Maverick’s hands and placed it back in the receiver without looking away from him.
“I-” Maverick’s eyes were quickly beginning to gloss over, “Viper’s dead.”
Ice breathed out audibly and began to run his hand up and down Maverick’s arm. “Oh Mav, I’m…” Ice didn’t know what to say. It began to dawn on him, Maverick had been only six when his father had gone MIA. He hadn’t gotten to really mourn, he barely remembered a time when he’d had a father. Viper had been so much more than a CO to him, for all intents and purposes, Maverick had just lost the only person in his life who could come close to being a father in his eyes. Ice swallowed, “I’m sorry.” What else did you say to someone who just lost a father?
“Ice, I-” Several emotions flashed across Maverick’s face in the second he’d paused before finally his face settled in a pinch expression, his lip beginning to quiver under the tenseness. “He was like…” Maverick’s watery voice brought tears to Ice’s eyes. He hadn’t sounded like this since Goose.
“I know,” Ice pulled Maverick into his chest, wrapping his arms around his back, fingers clutching tight to Maverick’s tee. Maverick’s breath gave a tentative hitch before he collapsed into the safety of Ice’s arms and broke down with his face buried in Ice’s neck. The carpet was beginning to burn Ice’s knees, but he couldn’t find it in himself to care, any pain he might feel at that moment was surely nothing compared to what Maverick must be going through. Ice squeezed his eyes shut and turned his face to plant gentle kisses into the inky mass of Maverick’s hair, rocking them gently. Whatever Maverick needed, Ice decided, he would provide. This was a generally excepted fact any day of the week, but now more than ever, Ice resolved.

By Lacerta
On Archive of Our Own
Status: Complete; Oneshot; 3,096 words; Complete sequel
Summary: It was a suicide mission. Of course they didn't succeed on their first try. - When Maverick dies, he loops back to the morning before.
My thoughts: I love time travel and Edge of Tomorrow is low key a good movie. Still. Poor Mav.

Just a little something I wrote when I got the inspiration to do that :)
I know it doesn't quite fit with the timeline but that wasn't what I was going for, I just wanted some angst and a little bit of comfort with IceMav.
I hope you like it anyway.
Warnings: swearing
"You know, B told me what he wanted to be when he got older."
Ice said and stirred the pasta, Mav looked up from the book he was mindlessly reading in.
"Yeah?"
"Yep. He said he wanted to become a pilot just like us. He even asked me if we could recommend him, he is adorable."
Mav didn't respond, he couldn't respond.
"Promise me....not to let him fly, Pete. Please...I don't want him to end up like Nick.
Promise me, please."
"I promise..."
Ice turned away from the stove and looked at his wingman.
"Mav? What's wrong? Isn't that sweet?"
The smaller man stood up and looked at Tom, his hands shaking.
"I...We can't let that happen, Ice. I promised Carole not to let him fly."
"You...? You did what?"
The blond asked and felt stunned, anger bubbling inside of him but also a bit of pain, especially for Bradley.
"She asked me to not let him fly...She didn't want him to end up like Nick.
Please, you have to understand, Tom."
Tom shook his head in return, the dinner cooking behind him already forgotten.
"How can you just decide that for him? Do you know what you would do to him? Do you realize how much you would hurt him?"
"Thomas...I promised her...."
"But she isn't here!" Tom started to yell, tears shining in his eyes. "Carole is not here and neither is Goose! For fuck's sake! You are barely here! It is him and me...
I have to switch between father, mother, housewife, and rear admiral just because YOU CAN'T FUCKING BEHAVE!"
Ice didn't mean to yell but he couldn't keep his emotions inside any longer. All the things he has been keeping inside bursting out.
The tears are falling freely now.
"I don't want ghosts to decide what is good for my kid! I don't want ghosts to decide what he should do and what not! We are responsible...Both of us and we both decide what is good for him and he decides what is good for him!"
The brown-haired man stared at Ice with an expression full of hurt, tears are also falling down his cheeks.
"I never forced you to stay, Ice.
I never forced you to stay and take care of a child that isn't even yours."
That was a low blow that hit Iceman hard.
"Yes, you are right. I never had any obligation.
But I stayed and I still stay because I love you and I love him and if you think you can win this argument by saying I never had to stay in the first place then you are not only wrong but also an asshole."
Ice put the pasta in some colorful containers he got from his sister-in-law Becky and put them carefully into the fridge, he figured both of them wouldn't be eating anything tonight.
"I'm not going to discuss this with you any further. Take the bed, Mav.
I need to...I need to clean the kitchen."
That was an obvious lie, Mav couldn't see one single stain. The only thing Ice could clean was the pot where the pasta had cooked a couple of minutes ago.
But Mav also knew that Ice needed something to do and that if he wasn't stress-baking he needed to stress-clean.
So he started to make his way upstairs in silence but before he could reach the first step, Bradley came through the front door, eyes red and blood dripping from his elbow.
"Pa! Can you help me clean that up?" The kid's shorts were full of grass stains, Ice probably already got a heart attack from that sight, his shirt was full of already dried mud and his knees suffered also a bit but didn't bleed.
"Of course, Baby Goose. What happened?"
"We played and I stumbled and I hit the concrete instead of the grass."
Even though Bradley Bradshaw has reached the age of 8 years, Iceman's inner mother hen came out and he picked the boy up to drag him into the bathroom.
"I can do that, Ice," Pete said quietly, the blond man stayed still for a moment before shaking his head.
"No need. I'll do it, just go to bed."
And he was gone.
Maverick made his way upstairs and into their master bathroom, where he got ready for bed.
He knew he wouldn't catch one bit of sleep but the thought counts.
The pilot can hear his boys in the bathroom, talking and water running.
Mav can imagine exactly what Ice did, his lover was always gentle and caring.
He probably got rid of the blood, put a bandage around their kid's elbow, and brushed his teeth with him together.
Maverick remembers it like it was yesterday.
Bradley was still small back then, smaller than now and the three of them used to brush their teeth together every evening.
After taking care of Bradley, Ice send the boy to bed with a kiss on the forehead and went down into the kitchen.
He finally broke down there, weeping and sobbing. Today was just too much to handle.
He tried to be as quiet as possible because he knew that Bradley wasn't asleep yet but played on his Gameboy and he didn't want the kid to see him like this.
Ice's hands gripped the sponge tight while he scrubbed at the stain on the floor.
It doesn't come off.
For god's sake, why doesn't it come off?
It was driving the blond pilot insane, tears mix with the water from the sponge, and Ice scrubs so hard that he thinks the stain might come off with the wood.
He didn't stop, didn't let the soft material in his hand go until another hand grabbed his.
"Hey....love. We talked about this didn't we?"
Pete was kneeling in front of him, keeping his hands from moving.
"This is a wine stain we can't get rid of." The man finished his sentence and took the sponge.
"But it bothers me..." Tom whispers, voice full of sorrow and defeat.
"I know it does...."
The two men were sitting on the floor, leaning against the kitchen counter in silence.
"I'm sorry...You are right...." Mav says after some time and Tom freezes.
"No...I know how seriously you take promises, I should've talked differently with you about this.
I shouldn't have said those things to you."
Maverick intertwined their hands.
"Maybe but I also shouldn't have said certain things to you and I should be here with you and him.
I'm just sorry that you had to tell me how you felt in such a way. I made you yell instead of talk it out."

I pairing: college! Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky x female reader
I précis: You get drunk at a party and your lovely bf takes care of you!
I content/warnings: mentions of drinking/alcohol, mentions of being drunk, cigarette/smoking mention, college soccer player tom, college au
I word count: 1,093
I a/n: part of my college soccer ice series
Tumblr media
Much to Ice’s chagrin, the team throws or attends a party after almost every game. If it’s a win, it’s to celebrate. If it’s a loss, it’s to commiserate. He doesn’t like drinking during soccer season, so he usually plays babysitter until everyone gets home. When you first asked Ice to go out with you, it was at a party, and you were endeared with the way he watched over the other boys and made sure they all stayed safe.
Now, you’re another person that Ice watches over at the party, especially if you’re drinking.
The other boys love when you tag along to parties, because it means they get to see the softer side of Ice that he doesn’t usually show to them. It’s even better when you’re drunk, because he’s extra lovey to you, and the guys eat it up.
You’re sprawled out on Ice’s lap while he lounges on the couch. Much to his dismay, there was a frat party so that is where he’s spending his Friday night, rather than relaxing with you.
His hand moves up and down your bare leg soothingly, distracting himself until you’re ready to leave. Your skin is warm under his palm, and he revels in the way you’ve gone limp in his lap, fully comfortable with—on—him. You’ve had about one seltzer too many, and Ice makes a mental note to grab you a bottle of water when you let him up.
Your finger traces his jawline up-and-down until you get bored with that and shift in his lap. “Icey,” You whisper, leaning forward like you’re going to share a secret.
He doesn’t even get a chance to answer before you’re placing your palms on either side of his face, squishing his cheeks, and forcing his lips to pucker. You press a sloppy kiss to his mouth, before releasing his face.
“What did you need, baby?” He hums, a fond expression taking over his features.
“Nothin’.” You mumble, suddenly shy. “Just wanted to kiss you.”
He laughs, warm and deep, running his hand over your back again. “Yeah?” He wonders. “You wanna do it again?”
You nod eagerly, falling even more into him when he presents his lips. They’re warm and gentle against your own, and you giggle into his mouth, hands curling into the hair at the nape of his neck.
“You’re so pretty,” You whisper when you pull away.
“I have to tell you something.” He says, mirroring your tone. “You’re even prettier.”
A delighted shriek leaves your lips and you squish him in a hug again.
Tumblr media
One seltzer too many, turned into too many drinks entirely, in just a couple of short hours. You’d gone to the bathroom with one of your friends and came back drunker than you had been before, with a wasted Goose in tow, giggling at something you were whispering in his ear.
“Alright, I think you’ve both had enough.” Ice states, standing up briskly, and deftly slipping an arm around your side.
“You mean we’re leaving?” Goose whines, resting his head on Ice’s shoulder.
“Afraid so, bud.” Ice nods. He pulls his phone out to text his team—double checking that no one else needs a ride home—before corralling you and Goose to his car.
In anticipation of this happening, he’d parked as close to the run-down fraternity house as possible.
Ice man-handles Goose into the backseat so that he can focus fully on you. He’s bent at the waist, leaning over you to slide the seatbelt across your body. Once it’s clicked into place, he presses his lips to your temple, lingering for longer, before making his way to the driver’s seat.
He listens to you ramble on about a plethora of things, a fond smile on his face as he holds one of your hands in his.
When he pulls up to the house he shares with the other members of his soccer team, Mav is standing, propped up against the side of the house, smoking a drunk cigarette. Ice has no idea how Mav beat him home, considering he was in the middle of a keg stand when Ice left with you and Goose.
“Mav!” Goose is suddenly yelling, half of his body hanging outside the window that Ice didn’t even hear him open.
“Jesus, Goose, get back in the car!” Ice calls, using the driver door access to close the back window when Goose heaves his body back inside the car.
It’s a long journey from the car to the front door, especially with you leaning more than half of your body weight on your boyfriend, while Goose is tugging him by the hand, eager to get inside and eat a snack.
Slider is inside—and sober—and Ice breathes a sigh of relief. He would’ve liked to have been the one to stay home, but right now he’s just happy Slider can help take care of Goose and Mav, and he can worry about getting you up to bed.
“Long night?” Slider jokes, wrapping his hand around Goose’s bicep so he can lead him into the kitchen.
“C’mon Goosey, I’ve got pizza rolls for you and Mav.”
“Thanks Sli.” Ice smiles, nodding at his friend before focusing fully on you. Usually Ice loves his bedroom—the only one on the third floor of the old house—but right now he’s wishing it wasn’t so that it wouldn’t be as far for you to walk. You’ve got your arms wrapped around his torso now, head pressed into his chest.
“M’tired, Icey.” You whine. “Can we take an elevator?”
He chuckles into the top of your head. “We don’t have one, honey.” He shoves his phone into his back pocket, slings your purse into the bend of his arm, before crouching in front of you.
“Hop on, baby.”
“Really!?” You coo, with much more energy than you currently possess.
“Really.” He’s smiling but you can’t see it, and you clamber onto his back with a huff.
“Got it!” You cheer, nestling your cheek against his shoulder. He’s steady through two flights of stairs, not even quivering when he gently deposits you on his bed.
“You’re so strong,” You coo happily. “Thank you for carrying me, Icey.”
“You don’t have to thank me honey,” He smiles, full and sincere. “Always gonna take care of you.”
You giggle, reaching up to lock your arms around his neck. You grin grows impossibly big when he plasters kisses to the top of your head.
“C’mon sweet girl, let’s get you ready for bed.”

AUATRSHUKDD I <3 YOUR WRITING!!!
could I pls req ice w hurt comfort? like 4 reader?
THANKU
join top gun night!
--
You're not sure anything hurts worse than a paper cut. You think you'd rather get a bullet to the chest than the slit that currently runs up your knuckle, blood oozing out in copious amounts.
"Shit," You breathe, dropping the envelope you'd just torn open. It lands on the table with an unceremonious smack, a bill yet to be paid laying inside.
At first, Tom thinks you're just upset about the price. You'd run up the A/C more than usual this month, but it's nothing you can't handle, which is why he's especially worried when you scurry off to the bathroom.
"Babe?" He calls after you, newspaper in hand. When you don't answer and he hears the rattling of metal inside the medicine cabinet, he tosses the paper aside, steps quick on the path to the bathroom.
He finds you hunched over the sink, water running red as it flows off of your hand. His eyes widen and he rushes for a band-aid, seeing an open one on the counter.
He peels off the wax strips over the stickers, "What happened?"
"Papercut," You rasp, voice thick with displeasure as the cut burns your nerves, "And I thought the triple digits were gonna be the worst thing about that bill."
He lets out a chuckle, if only to make you feel better about the searing pain in your hand. In reality the situation is far-from-funny, and his fingers shake as he holds the bandage ready for you.
"Dry it off," He instructs, handing you the towel. His face is pinched into a slight frown and he watches you intently as you press the towel to your finger, eyes locked on the line of red that immediately reappears when the towel is gone.
"Hurry," You urge as he wraps your cut, conscious of how tight he curls the bandage around your finger. He makes sure it doesn't turn colors, but the band-aid does as your blood seeps right through the pad and trickles down your finger again.
"Damn," You breathe, but Tom beats you to the towel. He holds pressure to your wound, finally glancing up at your face when he has a secure hold on your finger.
His eyes rove your features, locking onto your own and noticing unshed tears lining them. He clicks his tongue off of the roof of his mouth, reaching up with his free hand to brush his knuckle against your waterline.
"I'm sorry, honey." He murmurs, voice soft and sweet. It's heart-warming to hear such a sappy tone from Tom, though it's not like he's ever directed anything particularly brash at you. He pulls your hand up by the grip he's got on your finger, aiming your knuckles at his face and puckering his lips to press a kiss to the peaks.
It's comforting, and diverts your attention from the pain in your finger. His grip is firm but gentle, and the dull ache left behind by the papercut ebbs away as he replaces it with butterflies in your stomach. His lips are soft, because you've told him that if they ever get too chapped, you won't kiss him. He gets teased for applying chapstick in the locker rooms but you remind him Maverick doesn't even have a girlfriend to kiss, so he shouldn't rely too heavily on the man's opinions.
As fantastic as they feel on your hand, they feel even better on your own lips. He steps closer to you in the cramped bathroom, tile biting into his bare feet with a cold chill that runs through his veins. The soft press of your lips against his restores the warmth, though, and his hand on your waist provides you with the same comfort. It's a soft, sweet, sappy kiss, and your eyes drift shut with serenity.
It's moments like this that remind you you want to marry Tom. And you will, if the little box in his dresser you'd stumbled upon only days prior meant anything. Something giddy pushes at your chest, expanding your heart until it's bursting out of your chest. It prompts you to flutter your eyes open, and a soft puff of air from your nose makes Tom do the same.
He smiles at you, close-lipped and dreamy. You peck his grin once more for good measure, and only then realize that he's still holding your papercut.
You pry the towel off of your hand, peeling the old, soiled bandage off and tossing it into the garbage. You glance down at your now-clotted cut, no longer spouting fresh blood, only caked in dried rust-colored stains.
"You cured me," You laugh softly, an exhale from your dewy lips, "If this pilot thing doesn't work out, you should be a doctor on base."
"I can't go around kissing all of my patients," He reasons with a smile, unwrapping another bandage, "Besides, I think that means I'd have to see Goose about twelve more times a day than I do now."
"You like Goose," You remind him, fondness in your chest for the jovial man, "You wouldn't mind."
"I would if I had to kiss him," Tom sticks the new bandage on with a proud pat to the seam, "Too much mustache for my taste."

"I really don't think this is what I want to be doing before my first day." You said with a sigh as you looked at the loud and clearly crowded bar in front of you.
Your friend shook you lightly by the shoulder "It's exactly what you should be doing. Half of the pilots you'll be flying with will be here."
Letting out another soft groan as they began dragged you inside, you said forceully "But we leave by eight, no later!"
"Yeah yeah I know."
You almost flinched at the mixed smell of alcohol, smoke and sweat that hit you as you entered the bar. You grimaced a bit as you saw the large bustling crowd. A mix of military personnel and locals, some mixed together, some grouped up.
You wondered if you were the only pilot not wearing their uniform. You felt a bit out of place as you slid through the crowd and sat at the bar beside your friend.
Looking around, your eyes stopped momentarily on a taller man with blonde hair. A pilot, big smile, attractive. You wondered if he was one of the pilots you'd be working with.
Looking back at the bartender as they came over, you missed the man you had just been admiring look over at you.
Iceman's eyes seemed to double take as he looked over a the bar. As he scanned you up and down, interest took hold. He had never seen you before, or the friend you were with. You smiled at the bartender and he felt an odd flutter in his chest.
Feeling a smack on his shoulder, he looked over to see Slider staring at him amused "What's got you so distracted all of a sudden?"
Iceman smirked a little as he gestured towards you "Talking to the bartender."
Slider whistled lowly "Cute. And just you're type. You gonna go talk to 'em?"
Ice shrugged his head a bit "I'm thinking about it."
That was a lie, there was no thinking about it, and no way he would let you leave this bar without at least learning your name.
--- ---
"Oh, there's Jeremy! I'm gonna go say hi, don't go anywhere!"
As your friend bounded off without waiting for a reply, you just let out a soft laugh. You knew it wouldn't take long before you were left on your own.
Seeing a figure slide into the seat your friend had just been in, you could feel the strangers eyes boring into you. You internally cursed, hoping it wasn't some drunk local hoping to get lucky.
When they didn't look away, you finally glanced over. You felt your breath hitch in your throat as your eyes locked with a pair of icy blue ones. The man you had seen earlier was now right beside you, looking down at you with a charming smile.
"Hi." He said casually.
"Hello." You smiled as you sipped at the straw in your drink.
He continued to smile as he stared at you. You almost laughed "Is there a reason you're staring at me?"
His smile widened "Yeah, because I think you're beautiful."
You felt your chest clench as you tried to repress a grin. You nodded your head, amused and surprised.
"Your friend coming back, or can I sit down?" He added on, sparing you of a response to his blunt compliment.
So he was waiting for your friend to leave? How long had he been watching you? The thought made your skin burn hot.
"I doubt I'll see them again for a while." You said with a soft laugh before you motioned your head, welcoming him to sit.
You might as well get to know at least one pilot before tomorrow.
He smiled brightly as he sat down, obviously not bothered by his proximity to you as he stayed facing you, his knee brushing your thigh.
"I'm Tom, but my call sign is Iceman." Before you could respond he added on "Uh, a call sign is basically a nickname we have as pilots."
You smiled at him as you bit down on your straw, noting the way his eyes lingered on your lips as you did this.
So he assumed you were a local. You had heard of Iceman, he was a hot shot, number one at Top Gun in the class a couple years before you. And apparently he was cocky, and a tad bit full of himself, maybe this could be fun.
"Why do they call you that?" You asked softly.
He shrugged his head a bit as he leaned on the bar, "Because I'm cool in stressful situations. Ice cold. I make no mistakes."
You hummed a bit with a small smile, watching as his eyes scanned your face again.
"What's your name?" He asked softly.
"Y/n."
Reaching out his hand he grinned "Nice to meet you Y/n."
Taking it, you shook his hand, not unaware of the fluttering in your stomach, or the heat at the tips of your ears. He was certainly charming.
You looked around a bit, feigning ignorance "So the air base must be close to here huh? A lot of pilots in here."
He nodded as he casually looked around "Yeah, this is the main bar we come to for a night out. So I'm assuming you're not from here then?" You shook your head "Well that explains why I haven't seen you before."
"Just got into town today." You added casually before you turned your head towards him a bit more "So, Iceman" you began, noting the way his lip quirked as you used his call sign "What's it like being a pilot?"
You listened to him talk for a few minutes, deciding that though he was definitley a bit full of himself, he was also charismatic, loved his job, and loved flying.
"You get along with the other pilots, or are there rivalries?" You might as well get some info before you walk into your new station blindly.
He let out a short laugh "No, we all get along. Occasionally a newbie gets transferred in, thinks they're the shit, but we humble them quickly."
You smirked at this "Got any newbies recently?"
"No, but we got a new pilot transferring in tomorrow."
"Oh? What's their call sign?" You held your breath, waiting for it.
"Apollo."
You rose your brow "Well that's an interesting name."
"Yeah, I guess Apollo is the god of prophecy or something." He said with an almost disinterested tone.
"So they can see the future?" You joked.
He let out a chuckle "That would be something. No, apparently they got a reputation for being able to see things coming before they happen. Meaning great instincts, but we'll see."
You wanted to laugh, but you held it in. "You don't believe it?"
He shrugged his head "I hear a lot of reputations about pilots, half of them are exaggerated."
You turned fully towards him now, your leg pushing his aside but still resting against each other. This clearly caught him off guard as he straightened up a bit.
You set your elbow on the bar and put your head in your hand "And what's your reputation?"
He licked his lips as he smiled "I've got a few."
Before your conversation could move forward, you saw a large man suddenly appear at Iceman's side as he slung his arm around his shoulder. Iceman was clearly annoyed at this sudden intrusion, but you looked patiently at the new man.
"Iceman, ask your new friend here if they play darts, we need two more players."
Ice looked like he was about to shoo him off, but you spoke first.
"I do."
Iceman looked over at you a bit shocked, as Slider grinned "Great."
"You play darts?" Iceman asked amused
You shrugged "I'm decent."
You watched his mind working as a small smirk played at his lips. "You down a player each team?" Iceman asked Slider.
"Yes'sir."
"Alright, how about a deal then." He said to you now.
"What kind of deal?"
"You win, I pay your tab. I win, I get a kiss."
You saw his friend repress a smile, and you smirked. "Alright, deal."
Iceman's grin grew wider as you agreed. Standing, he reached out his hand for you to shake. Taking it, you were a bit surprised as he continued to hold your hand as he led you to the dart board, where you were greeted by the other pilots with a chorus of cheers.
--- --- ---
You let out a long breath as you aimed your dart at the board. You needed three points, no more or you'd bust, giving Iceman the chance to win. As you threw your dart, you let out a disappointed groan as you barely missed your mark.
You saw Iceman smile widely as he stepped up to the board. After a moment, he threw his dart, hitting the double four, earning the perfect score he needed.
You and your teammates groaned as his team cheered. You watched as Iceman turned towards you and took a step closer, clearly proud of himself. "Looks like you owe me a kiss."
You heard snickers and teasing 'oohs' coming from the other pilots, but you ignored them. Taking a step closer you stared up at Iceman, watching as he held his breath, his eyes darting between yours and yours lips. Leaning up slowly, you smiling softly before quickly kissing his cheek.
The others around you let out laughs and groans, some clutching their chest, mocking the obvious disappointment on Iceman's face.
You grinned at him and shrugged "You never said what kind of kiss."
The man you learned was Slider came up and gripped Iceman's shoulders "Ouch. But you should have expected that."
A smile spread across Iceman's face as he looked down at you "Cute."
You smiled sweetly at him, feigning innocence, as his grin widened. Suddenly you felt an arm slip around your waist. Looking over, you saw your friend looking at you with a smile. "Sorry to interrupt, but -" they leaned in and whispered in your ear.
Your eyes found the nearest clock you saw it was nearly nine. You looked at your friend and they shrugged, their version of an apology for not getting you sooner "I didn't want to interrupt your game."
You looked at Iceman, who stared at the two of you in confusion. Part of you wanted to stay, but you knew you needed a good nights sleep. And, you wanted the finish what you started with Iceman before he learned the punchline too soon.
You reached out, straightening one of his uniform patches "Sorry Tom, looks like I gotta go, busy day tomorrow."
"Already?" He laughed, but you could see the disappointment in his face. Maybe he did really like you. You shrugged apologetically and he straightened up a bit "Will I see you again?"
You smiled "I can't see the future, but I have a feeling you will."
He frowned slightly, obviously missing your hint of who you were.
Stepping back you smiled, "See ya Tom."
You could feel his eyes on you as you and your friend left the bar. You thought for a moment as you glanced back and saw him watching you, that he would follow you. But as Slider grabbed his arm, you knew he wouldn't.
He wanted to follow you, get your number, your address, anything, but as Slider grabbed him, he looked away for a moment, only to look back and see you were gone.
"Dammit" He muttered as he quickly went after you, sliding between the groups of people that filled the bar. As he stepped outside, he saw your car driving away and cursed under his breath.
You'd come back to find him right? There was no way it was just him feeling what was between you. That electricity that sent chills up his spine. Something he had never felt before. He had to see you again.
"So, who was that? He was cute." Your friend asked as you drove off.
"Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky, a pilot at the base."
They frowned a bit "Did you not tell him who you were? He seemed like he was expecting to never see you again."
You smiled "I may have kept it a secret."
They let out a laugh "Oh, that's good. Cruel, but good."
You smiled to yourself throughout the night as you tried to imagine how he would respond when he learned who you really were. Would he find it as funny as you did? Or would he be annoyed?
You were also a bit afraid. You grew to like him throughout the night, and he seemed to like you too. But when you started to work together, would he pull away?
--- --- --- ---
Throughout the rest of the night, and next morning, you would not leave Tom's mind. He couldn't believe he didn't get your number, or even just your last name. He already planned to go back to the bar tonight, to see if you'd come back. He felt a tightness in his chest that he knew wouldn't go away until he saw you again.
As Slider nudged his arm, he looked up as the General entered, ready to debrief the group on an upcoming mission.
"Before we start, I'd like to introduce the newest member of the team, you probably know them as their call sign Apollo. Graduated top of their class in the Top Gun program, I expect you all to welcome them and make them feel at home."
Tom stared down at the pen he was twirling in his fingers, as the general spoke, not particularly interested in the newest addition to the team. But when there seemed to be a wave of motion through the pilots, and a chorus of whispering, followed by Slider hitting him in the arm, he looked up in confusion.
Following Sliders line of sight, he saw the newest pilot coming in. He felt his heart skip a beat as his breath got caught in his throat.
"Lieutenant Y/n L/n, Apollo, welcome."
You nodded at the General as you turned and looked at the group of pilots. You recognized most of them from the bar, and from their shocked faces, they recognized you. As your eyes ran through the crowd, they paused on a familiar face.
Tom stared up at you with a clear look of shock and confusion.
It felt like time stopped as he met yours eyes. And as a small smirk played at your lips he felt his heart palpitate. Sitting down in the front row, his eyes bored into the back of your head throughout the rest of the debriefing. He couldn't focus on anything else.
As he sat there, your conversations ran through his head again. The whole time, you knew what you were doing. When you met, he immediately assumed you weren't a pilot and you played along. When he remembered talking about Apollo he felt himself cringe.
Then he remembered what you said when he asked if he'd see you again "I can't see the future, but I have a feeling you will." You played him.
But he wasn't mad, he even felt a smile appear on his face as he stared at the back of your head. You did exactly what he would have done. He almost laughed, God, you were perfect.
When the debrief ended, you weren't surprised to turn around to see Tom walking straight up to you. He had small smile playing on his lips and you felt a wave of relief to see he wasn't angry.
He stopped right in front of you as his face went blank. "Y/n. Or, should I call you Apollo?"
You smiled "Either works."
Slowly, a smile spread across his face as he shook his head "You played me."
"I didn't play you, I just let you assume I was what you thought I was."
"Which was?"
"Well not a pilot obviously."
He let out a short laugh "Yeah, fair enough " He stared at you for a moment, his eyes darting around your face, and you felt those now familiar butterflies.
"So, Apollo. We gonna have a rivalry, or are we gonna be friends?" His voice slowed as he said 'friends' making you assume he was insinuating more.
You smiled slowly "I don't know Tom. You tell me."
--- --- --- ---
As you set down your now empty glass, you stood up, slapping Slider on the shoulder "I'm out." You said casually.
There was a chorus of 'boos' and complaints from your friends as you began to leave, but you just raised your hand in farewell. You had a long day, and sitting in the noisy, crowded bar was not how you wanted to spend the rest of it.
You had been at the base for over a month now, and it even started to feel like home. You got along with everyone, especially Tom. Nothing had formed between you since that first night you met, but you knew those feelings were lingering just under the surface.
Neither of you shied away from flirty comments, innuendos, or even physical touch. You were used to him slinging his arm around your shoulder, or even resting your head against him. You were friends, but something more was there, and it was obvious to both of you, and probably everyone else, but neither of you had truly acted on it.
Your eyes looked around, and landed on Tom. You thought of calling out to him, but you saw his intense gaze as he lined up a shot and decided no to bother. You would see him tomorrow, and just like every other day, you'd hope something would change.
Iceman grinned as he took his final winning shot in his game of pool. Looking over to where you had been, he felt a small tug at his heart when he saw you were gone. Looking around, he found you just in time to see you heading towards the doors. He felt a tight clench in his chest as he felt an urge to follow you.
He had been debating telling you how he felt ever since he met you, but since you started to work together, he knew it could be risky. But every day it felt worse holding it in. Every day he saw your smile, heard your laugh, he fell harder and harder. And every day he missed the chance to hold your hand, to kiss you, to hold you against him was a day of torture.
As the thought of you walking out of the bar the first night you met entered his mind, he remembered that regret he felt for having not chased after you faster. Before this thought was over, he was handing his pool cue to his friend and following after you.
Stepping out into the cool darkness, he saw you heading out of the parking lot. "Y/n!" He yelled, causing you to halt and turn around.
You watched as Tom came jogging up to you, and you felt your stomach knot.
As he stopped in front of you he smiled down at you "Let me walk you back, I hate the idea of you going alone."
You smiled, feeling warmth in your chest "I wont stop you."
Turning, you both began walking. As he walked in stride beside you, his arm brushed against yours, hands briefly touching. There was a minute of silence as you began walking down the road as both of you felt the rising tension.
Tom took a breath as he stopped walking, at the same time, he gently grabbed your arm. You stopped and turned back, seeing the intense look on his face.
"What is it?" You asked, voice almost wavering.
"I-I have something I need to tell you. Something that has been eating me up."
Frowning, you turned fully towards him, "What is it Tom?"
You shivered as he gently ran his fingers down your arm, until he hooked his hand around your own. He stared down at your hand, gently stroking it with his thumb.
Swallowing, he looked back up, meeting your eyes. He could see the concern in your gaze, and all he wanted to do was take your face in his hands and kiss you.
"I don't think it's a secret to either of us that there is something here. And that there has been since we met. But over the last month, I didn't act on it, when I should have. And every day I haven't has been torture to me. And honestly Y/n-" He let out a shaky breath as he took a small step closer, staring deep into your eyes. "I think I'm falling in love with you."
You felt your heart jump in your chest as your ears and face grew hot. How could someone so perfectly say what you had been wanting to?
A slow smile spread across your face "I think I'm okay with that."
Tom's nervous expression gave away to a bright smile, that was all you needed to say. He knew how you felt, and you knew how he felt. There was no secret about it, just one of you needed to break that silence.
Lifting his hands, he gently held your face as you stepped closer, your bodies gently touching.
His eyes darted to your lips before his smile turned into a smirk "Then how about I actually get that kiss you owe me?"
A soft giggle escaped, as you smiled coyly at him before your own eyes traced his lips. Slowly you both leaned in, locking eyes just as your lips touched. Your eyes then fluttered closed as Tom pulled your face closer as he deepened the kiss.
The deep didn't last long but it was electric, sending shivers through your body. Pulling away, you locked eyes and grinned, as he pressed his forehead against yours.
"Tell me Apollo, can you really see the future? Did you know I'd fall head over heels for you?"
You grinned happily up at him "I can't see the future, but I had a feeling you would."

Icemav - Sleepy
“Was that a yawn?” He froze like a deer in headlights, and Maverick knew he’d been caught. “No-” he protested, but Ice already had the TV remote in his hand, pointing it at the flashing screen, eyebrow raised at the shorter pilot. In an instant, the screen went black and Maverick sighed and pouted. “I’m really not tired! I promise, we can watch to the end”
Fighting with Thomas ‘Iceman’ Kazansky was never a good outcome unless you were him, so Maverick relented, stifling another yawn with the back of his hand, rolling his eyes at Ice’s smirk as the taller pushed himself off the couch, stretching, then holding out an arm for Maverick, wrapping around his shoulders and squeezing his forearm.
“Come on sleepyhead, lets get you to bed” The blonde teased, practically holding his wingman up at this point. When they got to the stairs, instead of dragging the smaller pilot, Ice bent down and picked him up, carrying him bridal-style to deposit him unceremoniously on the bed. “Scoot over” He insisted, and Maverick couldn’t say no, shuffling towards the wall so his partner could lay down. Or sit against the headboard, apparently. Maverick pushed himself up on his elbow, raising a confused eyebrow at his partner. Iceman only smiled, mouth a thin line as he patted his legs, the way someone would say sit here. Only it was lay here this time.
And so he did, gently laying his head across Ice’s thighs, slightly bewildered at it all. The feeling quickly dissipated at the feeling of his hands running through his thick, dark hair. The gentle pressure made him sigh heavily, feeling his body grow exhausted. Ice had a small, secretive smile on his face and Maverick could barely keep his consciousness enough to whisper an ‘I love you’ before he was pulled down into the depths of sleep, his partners hands still carding through his hair, a smile on his face.

Note
I just finished rereading Slider's oneshot and I loved it just as much as I always do. I was wondering if you had any thoughts on how the conversation between Ice and Cougar went at Ice's retirement ceremony. You gave us little snippets of it from Slider's point of view, but I'd love to hear more of it if you have thoughts on it you'd like to share.
this is such a kind ask. i have no idea
for the same reason there is no explicit reaction in ch 12 when ice first hears mav say i love you—i spent a good week low key trying to figure out whether a reaction was needed there—it’s such a potent powerful cocktail of so many wild & unfamiliar emotions that i don’t personally think i have the literary juice to even attempt to try to describe it
i also am allergic to writing ice or mav explicitly coming out to anyone because it gives me secondhand embarrassment for them. the idea of the commander of the pacific fleet having to psych himself up to awkwardly mumble “um i should’ve told you all this time … i think i…i think im gay” to his friend gives me the ick sorry he’s not fifteen years old. so he Could be doing the big lgbt rite of passage of emotionally apologizing and coming out to Cougar in that conversation. but he Could Also be doing the ‘im nearly sixty years old im not gonna bullshit you’ thing of simply saying: “you and I have been very shitty to each other in the past and i apologize for that in x,y,z way and you were right about me and maverick and we’re gonna make it official this summer and if you want to come we’d really love to have you & normalize diplomatic relations between us again, you’re a real great friend when you’re not being a massive fucking douche”
