I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting lately about being a black writer and the choice I made a few years ago to start writing for other black girls like myself, purposefully stating that my fics are written with a black reader or black OC or black latina reader because I had never seen that before in fanfic and wanted to make a space for us, and for myself too where that was possible.
I realized I could start writing the kinds of stories where someone with brown skin, dark skin and black features with hair like mine or my friend’s could be the main character, could be in love, and taken care and allowed to be sensitive and emotional and angry and at the center of the story for once!
At least to me, from where I was when I started posting my writing on here, I think it was just myself and a handful of other black writers that were really the first to start writing specifically for black readers, for a non white audience, because up until that point any character fic you searched for was mostly likely going to be white coded or have a white OC. I don’t think I ever really give myself much credit for it but I’m trying to get better at that so I’m going to take the space to say I’m really proud to be one of the first to do that in the fandoms I was in at that time.
Unfortunately a lot of those writers I was inspired by and was writing alongside have left or stopped writing or moved their writing elsewhere because as much as there was positive responses and people finding representation, there was also a lot of racism and harassment and just awful treatment thrown our way too.
Lately I’ve really stopped to think about how much harassment I myself experienced, how many times I had to turn my asks off from racist anons and hate I was getting, and how there was a point in time where it was frequent to see black writers or other writers of color on here dealing with racist comments.
So much of that was not okay at all, especially when I think about how nobody was really sticking up for us besides each other, it was hardly a peep from other white writers and I don’t think it was as called out as it should have been at the time which is why what my dear friend @obiknights says about that in their response here is what made me write this post because it was said so plainly and correctly! (That entire post including OP’s words is spot on and important to talk about btw so I encourage everyone to read it!!)
The writing spaces in fandom and just in general are not catered to anyone outside the white/cis box and I’m thankful it’s been a long time since I’ve had to deal with any harassment but I still see it happen and I still see how often we are ignored or given less recognition. I know that my writing receives less interaction and that less people give reading it a chance because it doesn’t cater to them as a white person and sometimes that still really frustrates me and makes me angry.
All this to say I think people, myself included need to be reminded that there’s still a lot of work to do and there’s always ways to support black writers, black queer writers and artists, human beings, on here who put so much of our love and time and energy into creating amazing stuff and we deserve to take up space too.
I’ll never stop writing about people who look like me, I love it too much, I love how rich our creativity is and frankly, out of pure spite for being told so many times my writing wasn’t realistic for having a black woman as the protagonist, I’m going to keep writing these stories forever! <3

Re, this anon: https://olderthannetfic.tumblr.com/post/719669829313953792
Yeah, well... that's the point of a bunch of internet activists: they throw the stone and hide the hand, screeching that, if you're doubting their innocence, you're an imperialist racist who should never be allowed on the internet.
Stitch, the person they're picking up a lot of their schlock from, is a master in this: they attack people, and the moment those who got attacked ask what they've done that's wrong or ask to have a one-on-one conversation with them, they shut everything down, screenshot whatever they received, block the person, and then go on Twitter whining about being a victim of racism because their words weren't listened to like the Gospel. Over and over again.
After the TOG racefaker scandal broke, I went through her blog and, just as I had expected, she too followed the same modus operandi: attack, screenshot, block, cry about being a victim of racism because people didn't let her insult them and demanded explanations about her ranting, wannabe-academic, posts.
They're not the only ones who do/did this, but these are the two examples of constant "harassment is good if I do it, but I'm the only victim and the others deserved it" cycle that come to my mind as of now.
When you're looking at End OTW Racism, you have to expect the same thing. They don't have answers, they don't want to have answers. This whole movement (horribly organized, horribly promoted, horribly everything) is nothing but a huge stroke of ego for its organizers.
You know how antis accuse others of being racist or pedophiles or whatever else because, that way, the accused cannot defend themselves? This is the same thing: if the OTW doesn't address their manifesto, then they're racist because they refuse to acknowledge it; if the OTW does address their manifesto, then they're admitting that they didn't care about racism until the moment they were called out on it and their concern regarding racism within the OTW is manufactured.
It's a win-win situation for them because, no matter how much you try, if you don't fully and absolutely agree with them, you can be branded as racist.
If you scroll through the End OTW Racism tag on Twitter, you'll see plenty of people (and especially the organizers), tweet stuff in the same vein as "I went to olderthannet's Tumblr and oof," not so subtly accusing all the people who raised valid concerns and asked valid questions of being racist.
I'm also not the first person who mentions this, but Stitch does seem to be heavily involved with the project, and even if they weren't, their words have been used to build the manifesto, and they amplified this crap through one of their Teen Vogue articles.
Now... not only Stitch is known for acting in bad faith, attacking creators of colors, branding them as Uncle Toms, purposefully making fun of them if they don't agree with them and sending their followers to attack and harass, but, just in April, they were being dragged because of another article they wrote, in which they compared writing fics about bad fictional characters to worshiping serial killers. Weeks before that, they were being dragged because their fanbase of antis discovered that their fics included incest, something that goes greatly against their preachings.
How big of a coincidence is it, that Stitch needed to have their image cleaned of all sins and suddenly a group of people drops a manifesto and hashtag about racism in fandom, founding a movement Stitch fully and absolutely agrees with and can rave about for days on end? A movement that offers very vague answers and plans, and those creators attack anyone who doesn't immediately agree with them, to the point that no questions can be ever asked about it?
Unless I'm shown actual evidence that Stitch isn't involved with this, nothing will convince me that End OTW Racism was launched for any reason that isn't to rehabilitate Stitch in the eyes of their chronically online audience.

multiple popular blogs in the iwtv fandom have a documented pattern of behavior of saying anything ranging from "could be interpreted as a bit racist but only if you're looking for it" to now literally "the real racism is actually against white people" and other alt right talking points. LOOK AT THE PATTERN.
you see the same people constantly complaining about how they keep getting called racist by black fans over and over again, and instead of asking yourself "why do so many black fans think these people are racist? could they be onto something?" you zero in on how polite they are about it and go "well, they put some naughty words after the word racist, looks like there really is a woke mob of big bad black bullies terrorizing the fandom, sounds legit!"
the thing is, something like about a year ago, i actually posted an absolute garbage take i can't believe i ever thought was acceptable, and got rightfully called out for it. i had some other white people agreeing with me, but THANK GOD someone i followed reblogged a post talking some sense. i freaked out at first of course. "someone is vagueing about me? that's not exactly what i said verbatim. i'm being misinterpreted unfairly! what if everyone finds out and starts hating me?" i got defensive, though i avoided throwing the classic huge public tantrum by simply logging off until i cooled down a little, so i managed not to draw that much attention. it's probably only because it was people that i already thought seemed really smart who were saying it, that made the voice at the back of my mind go, "what if they're right and i'm wrong?" so i really thought about it. at first i thought it was just my phrasing that was bad and if i explained it better it would be fine. but now that i've had over a year to think about it and listen and learn, i've come to realize just how stupid that was. and it's probably not the only dumb racist post i made, just the one that i saw called out. i've since deleted the whole blog so i can't check. which i admit i did in large part so other people couldn't check anymore either.
and what were the only consequences i faced? there are users that i think are really cool, and even some i was following, who have me blocked. i go :( about it for a second when i can't reblog a post. iirc like 3 anon asks i've gotten in total, only one of which was even mean at all. oh the horror, someone called me a racist bitch. i literally WAS. and even if i wasn't, so what? it made me feel a little bad, yeah. it would probably actually feel LESS bad if i thought it didn't apply. it would just be confusing and a little funny. it did apply, and it probably still does, i got a lot of shit to unlearn. in my book, me feeling bad is absolutely worth it if it brought whoever sent it even a smidgen of satisfaction. them having to witness my bullshit was undoubtedly worse.
the only reason i'm able to be as polite as i am is because as a white person this does not affect me personally. this fandom has been racist since before the show even started. if i saw popular blogs in my fandom being, say, lesbophobic for more than two years, constantly, and getting away with it, still being popular, receiving praise, and every time i said anything about it i had their followers come after me, while consoling them, i'd be pretty fucking pissed. i'd get tired of being nice so fast. and that's not even mentioning the trauma from a lifetime of racism in real life and online that black people have to deal with. i can't even imagine.
"racist" is not a goddamn slur. anyone who tries to tell you that it is has an agenda, and it's not that hard to figure out what that agenda is.
OPEN YOUR EYES AND LOOK AROUND YOU. really look. and when you see it, STAND UP AND SAY SOMETHING. i'm ashamed it's taken me this long to do that.

Tumblr media
☆ greetings! this is a blog i made on a whim to talk about a variety of things regarding the alternative fashion world (particularly japanese fashion), how people of color are seen in it, and how this view affects them. i'll most likely discuss many topics through the lens of intersectionality, a theory explaining that the multiple facets of one's identity inherently determines their life experiences. these facets include (but are not limited to) race, gender, class, and disability. most of my posts will focus on the particular intersection of racial identity, skin color, and mental illness, and how they come together in alt spaces to influence the experience of alternative people of color. there may be more correlation than you think! my goal is to create a space for people to vocalize their own struggles related to race and mental health, as well as for people to feel more comfortable discussing these issues openly and to learn from others' perspectives. i feel that there is a particular lack of openness in the j-fashion and menhera communities when it comes to discussing race-specific issues, intentional or not. i believe we can change that with some time, patience, and will to improve!
admin info, dni, and tagging system below the cut. ☆
Tumblr media
★ admin info: you can call me mela or tonin! i identify as a part of the menhera subculture. i use she/they/it, and i adore j-fashion and its history. my favorite aesthetics and styles include yumekawaii, yamikawaii, and girly! i'm also very invested in ethnic studies and race theory, which present themselves in a lot of aspects of my life. these are what i'll be using as the basis for many of my posts!
Tumblr media
★ please do not interact under any circumstances if you:
are racist, homophobic, transphobic, or ableist in any way
are a TERF or SWERF
are a nsfw/kink blog
are pro-ed, pro-sh, or generally anti-recovery
believe jirai kei/landmine-type refers to girly fashion, and/or that you can "reclaim" the term
Tumblr media
★ tagging system: along with some general tags, i'll be using personalized tags for this blog to hopefully make searching for specific kinds of posts easier! the list is as follows:
#rise and shine - the main category for my general posts discussing fashion, culture, race and/or mental health
#sunny day - any cute coords, accessories, hairstyles, and diy tips and tricks i come across
#cloudy noon - any interesting articles i've found that are related to the contents of the blog
#starry night - posts directly speaking out against, and bringing awareness to racism, ableism, and current events in the world
#sweet dreams - reassurances, affirmations, and comfort for those who need it
#tonin talks - answers for any asks i may receive. im open to asks about many things ranging from silly to serious, so go right ahead!
#misc - anything that happens to not fall into any of these categories

thanks for stopping by, and i hope you learn something new while you're here!!

A bit controversial, hope you're not angry about me bringing it up. It's just, not to be an asshole, but the fandom's (some) outcry over sexism in Tolkien's work makes me laugh as a woman myself. I understand where they are going, but like for them to point fingers at the author for being sexist, not realizing some of their opinions are straight-up borderline sexist is too funny for me. The amount of vitriol that Tolkien's female characters receive, the way they are victims of circumstances who have to make decisions but are shamed for it ten times over while the male characters are given so so much sympathy is why I laugh at popular posts/fics whining about that. They take these female characters for granted, they ask for more but can't handle the ones who are freaking nice but had to make big decisions. What do you think about it?
Honestly, the discussion of sexism in Tolkien's work is ever ongoing, but your point is very valid and it's something I've discussed with other fans.
Setting aside a discussion of any sexism of Tolkien himself (which is present, to what degree people may debate over), often we really see the fandom just recreating a slightly different flavor of sexism?
Where's that post that's like "you all ask for more evil female characters but you can't even handle a female character being impolite 1 time"? Obviously the "Tolkien fandom" is not really the monolith the name implies, but there is a level of comedy in seeing people complain that there aren't enough plot-relevant female characters (true--Curufin's wife birthed Feanor's only grandchild, and we don't even know her name? None of the Noldor wives go to Middle-earth except Elenwe who dies on the way? [And Edhellos but that's not in Silm proper iirc]) but then ALSO go and like, call Idril racist because she didn't want to fuck her creepy cousin (overlooking that Idril herself is of mixed Elven heritage; mom was a Vanya).
I think there are a LOT of instances where female characters are attacked and shamed and subject to headcanons about their selfishness and incompetence because they were put in a very difficult situation where there was no "safe" option, and that a male character in that position would have been given a LOT more grace by the fandom (look how people will bend over backwards to argue the Feanorians are not guilty of mass murder several times over).
But this isn't unique to the Tolkien fandom by ANY means--female characters get brushed aside to focus on their male peers, villainized to suit a male character's needs, and generally looked own on across fandoms. It's just particularly ironic here because of the discussion on the sexism in Tolkien's writing--which the fandom then goes ahead and recreates, sometimes worse than it is in the books. But it is something I've seen in virtually every fandom where I've spent time (Look at the way Mel Medarda is treated by the Arcane fandom; look at the way Bianca Davri is treated by the Dragon Age fandom; look at the way Skylar White was treated by the Breaking Bad fans, etc.)
However, I do think this has actually gotten better since I was younger and involved in fandom? Obviously it varies by online space and it's still an issue, but it feels like the vitriol was far more widespread when I was a young teenager. It feels like there's been a greater movement in the last several years to cut back on this kind of behavior and encourage a more positive environment for female characters...or maybe I'm just in more curated spaces now so I don't stumble upon nearly as much of it as I used to.
Anyway, anon, if you need some Tolkien blogs to follow who give female characters their due, just let me know! Happy to give some recs.

Lol, saw someone answering a long ass ask where they detailed why they dislike Max and it's honestly so funny. The only valid reason they had was Max winning, which is fair. People always hate a winner so I understand but the other reasons were funny. One reason was because "Max always makes up excuses for his fans behaviours and never calls them out". Like Lewis does? Like Charles does? Max is the only one who calls out his fan, mate. When did Lewis actually call out his cult for being misogynistic, pedophilic, abalist, *that word for shaming people for being born in a particular country, I can't remember it*, racist to Asians, Latinos, Muslims etc. When did Charles call out tifosi for calling Sophie a whore, wishing death on Max, being racist to Lewis, harassing people, making children and women feel up safe in Monza? When, when??
Another reason was because "Redbull only supports him and not anyone else". But have you considered that maybe he's just that good that everyone else looks not that good compared to him? Like Mercedes wasn't, isn't catered toward Lewis? Redbull in 2010-2013 wasn't catered towards Seb? Last night Redbull celebrated Checo's win despite Max' bad race and Max was part of it too. Unlike some team *Coughs Valtteri with Mercedes Coughs*
This was the funniest to me that "Max can never be happy for someone else when he has a bad race". There's literally a compilation of Max congratulating other after his bad race. When Charles won in Austria, Max was the happiest person in the world, even more then Charles. There were other points but I don't remember them.
And the worst thing is that they write fanfics about Max 😭 and a lot. Like their most well received works are about Max 😬. And they are a Charles and Seb fan (apart from being a member of cult lh). They dislike Max but like current and rbr era Seb, who's exactly like Max but even more unhinged. They could tolerate even love Seb when he was dominanting every race and doing that finger taunt but have problems with Max doing it? Honey pick a struggle 😪.
Sorry for the rant here. I could send it to them but they would never acknowledge this. And these are the same people who say shit like "why are you interacting with me, I'm allowed to have my own opinions" when you try to put them in their place. It all about having your own opinions until it doesn't fit your agenda. So Lando isn't allowed to want his best friend to win? Alex doesn't get to happy for Max? Seb doesn't get to say he wants Max to win? Where is the freedom of speech and thought now? Cult lh is will never respect Max because they can't get other the fact that he's simply better, and Max fans will never respect Lewis because he's a hypocrite, because of him directing unnecessary hate towards Max just cause and especially because of his fans. His fans are odd and they need to be locked away for public safety, the normal lh fans need to be protected from them. These delusion people consume f1 like it's some sort of sope opera and not a sports.
Bestie this took ages I am sorry I had college and now I am typing this on my laptop cause I absolutely agree with everything you have said!!!!
“Max always makes up excuses for his fans behaviour” that is the biggest lie they have told. Are they forgetting the fact that Max had fully called out the people in Austria who were harassing girls? Then we have Lewis who never called out the sexist posts made against Hannah, or the racist posts against Calum who got a lot of them post Zandvoort. He also never called out the racist abuse Yuki got after Zandvoort or called out the death threats that Max got last season and during Silverstone never called out the booing but he more or less expected Max to call it out when it came to him. Lewis only calls out stuff when it will benefit him, he could give less of a Fuck about sexism, racism or death threats when it comes to Red Bull drivers or members. The shit in Monza should have been called ot by all drivers, espiaclly the chants against Sophie, they were vile but the fact the media never commented on the abuse in Silverstone, and Monza but jumped on the Austria, Spa and Zandvoort bullshit when there was no issues at the latter two races, only a bullshit story about a flare being thrown at Lewis😭😂
“Red Bull only supports him” Maybe because they knew he was going to be the one to bring them a world championship? They’ve known Max since he was 15/16, they knew the talent and the faith in himself he has, he is a Red Bull driver inside and out so why would they not put their faith in him? Since 2020 there is no-one (including Lewis) who is better than Max, he is the top driver on that grid. Lewis was favoured at Merc, Bottas was called a fucking ‘wingman’ for god sake it really showed they gave a Fuck about him huh? Last season in Turkey they were basically depressed that Bottas won yet here Red Bull have been cheering on Checo, backing him all the way….yes they favour Max but they don’t throw a fit like Ferrari did at Silverstone and not go to the podium.
“Max can never be happy for someone else” I think they need to look at Monza 2020, Baku 2021, Monza 2021, Bahrain 2022, Monaco 2022 and Singapore 2022. When Max was the first to congratulate Pierre, Seb, Daniel, Checo and Charles even tho his race was shit. Max is literally proven to be the most kind hearted boy on that grid, all of his friends say that about him, never a bad word to say about him. Them writing fics about Max being this asshole until Daniel fixes him is so fucking weird….like just concentrate on your own driver since you can’t even get who Max is as a person correct.
I won’t respect Lewis for those reason….the man throws unnecessary hate to Max, never has a good word to say about him even tho Max never has a bad word to say about him but lewis will never respect a driver who is better than him, a driver who has never been in awe of him…which Max never has been.

350 Works on AO3 Check-In
I've now got 350 works on AO3, so time for another check-in.
Some background, since I have some new followers. These check-ins started because I kept on encountering fan descriptions of fandom that were stuff like, "If you ship X ship, you'll get harassed by Antis!" or "if you write dark content, you'll get harassed by puriteens!" Not exact quotes, but you get the idea.
But the thing was, these warnings weren't matching my experiences, even if I wrote the ship in question or dark content. And, sure, I was only one fan, but at that point, I had dozens of works up on AO3, and I was in a number of fandoms. So what was up with that?
As a result, I decided to start keeping track of my experiences, checking in every 25 works. The first time I got hate on a fic was a little after 200 works, in the This Is How You Lose the Time War fandom, when someone on anon told me I'd ruined my fic by making the dog in it a pit bull.
Which, okay, "Pit Bull Anti" isn't exactly the archetypal fandom menace.
Not too long after that, in the Our Flag Means Death fandom, I got a harassing anonymous Ask telling me they hoped I got shanked for being an Izzy Hands fan. (I was one of several Izzy fans that got an anon Ask like that, and OFMD remains the fandom with the most amount of harassment from Antis that I've witnessed.) This was still not quite the archetypal experience with Antis I'd seen described - the hate was about liking a character, rather than a ship - but it otherwise fit the mold of fans minding their own damn business and getting harassment from someone justifying their harassment on moral grounds. (The Anti-Izzy Anon believes that Izzy Hands as a character is racist and that Izzy fans are thus racist for liking him. And also that Izzy is abusing Ed and that liking Izzy is thus abuse-apologia.)
I've also had the experience in fandom of having people dogpiling and being shitty towards me for talking about racism. In fact, Talking About Racism is the thing that is most likely to result in me getting an aggressive and hostile response from my fellow fans, although this does not at all fit the common fandom perception as all hate being from Antis angry over ships.
Anyway, that's the backstory for these posts.
For this check in, I have nothing new to report. I haven't received any harassing asks or angry comments.
But I do want to talk a bit about why I tend to keep the scope of these posts so narrow to my experiences.
And that's because it's really hard to get a big picture grasp of fandom. I mean, I've got 350 works up on AO3. That's a lot!
AO3 as a whole now has over 12 million fan works!
I'm the Spiders Georg of fan fic writing over here, and my works are only 0.0029167% of the total works on AO3!
If someone wanted to get a big picture of fandom and answer a question like "What percentage of fandom is Antis?", "What is the age range of Antis?", or "How common is harassment in fandom from Antis?", there's a lot that would have to be taken into account.
To start, they'd have to define Anti, since the exact definition can vary depending on who you talk to. Are they only Antis if they're opposed to a ship, or does opposition to a character also apply? What about opposition to pit bulls? What if someone calls themself an Anti but doesn't harass anyone? Etc.
Then you run into all of the issues that come with surveys. What platform do you conduct your survey on? Mastodon skews older in its user base than, say, TikTok, so you'd get different results surveying one than the other. You've got issues with 'How to get the most honest answers out of people?' and 'How to account for the fact that survey results are biased towards individuals that respond to surveys?'
There are people trying to tackle those questions, and I applaud them, as they've got their work cut out for them.
But that's why, for these check in posts, I generally stick to my own personal experiences. It's a narrower scope, but it's one I can speak to with confidence.

I honestly think it’s so ironic that Mack/Sunny/Solar Pirate/Maribel Madrigal (on Telegram) swears she’s changed her “views” but is behaving EXACTLY like Trump did when held accountable. Her “spreading false narratives about me” is his “fake news.” Which, by the way - what is the false narrative about her exactly? If you willingly throw your most powerful weapon in democracy (your vote) behind a racist, transphobe and overall bigot then you are one too. Simple math. If Cowbuild’s bigoted comments outside of the Sims community from 4+ years ago are welcome evidence to question her character, why wouldn’t Sunny’s from TWO years ago be valid?
Her “I risked myself to bring this community awareness so show me that you are worth fighting for” is his “I didn’t have to run for presidency, I did this to expose the corruption in Washington for you all so now you better help me stand against the radical left media.” She isn’t even ADDRESSING the harm she’s actively causing and is going full throttle into her paywall expose to regain her credibility. She doesn’t even have the stones to do it on Tumblr lollll. She’s run to Twitter where they are UNDOUBTEDLY unaware of who she really is. She gets to control the narrative in a vacuum in a way she can no longer do her. It’s also funny that she’s including HER OWN drama as “community drama” like…how full of yourself can you be? People calling YOU out isn’t community drama.
Let me also add that she fully intended to do an expose on Black simmers and black creators specifically with the intention of “exposing” how unethical “urban creators” are. Yes, she referred to black creators and their content as urban then went on to say how she found their cc “ghetto, tacky and gangster.” The only reason that happened was because one her mods on Dollhouse Mafia checked her about it. But sure, the racism thing is a false narrative. Fuck you Mack. There are better voices and if you aren’t who people say you are, you’d step down permanently and let someone else take the reigns. Someone less stained. That white savior complex and narcissism won’t let her though.

Ask 2:
Tumblr media
(Excuse me for combining these, I'm going to have to start putting some asks together because there's a lot on the subject ahejdn)
Anyway, yikes. I agree with everything, nonny, but I want to highlight the DHM part since I had the second ask about the same thing. I had no idea about this, and obviously I have no proof other than anons. But I have heard a similar sentiment from others from DHM recently (Mack being anti-black there). That is disgusting and I'm so sorry y'all had to deal with that. I got an anon not long ago about the racial elements of the paywall issue that I still need to post, this reminded me of that. Do I think the paywall debate is something a racist could easily latch onto if they wished to have an excuse to attack certain creators without it seeming race-fueled... yes, yes I do.
Ask 3:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm so sorry, nonny. I agree, that sounds sus. The reason why I'm even more suspicious is the following ask (which i received a good bit before this one).
Ask 4:
Tumblr media
If anyone has any proof of this, please post it. If Mack truly is working both sides while playing savior (which sounds like her), it's dangerous for anyone that might trust her with their personal info. I know she got kicked out of DHM, but there's a lot of people that still trust her elsewhere. Also, the fact that most people that she seems to associate with somehow get attacked, their accounts deleted, info leaked etc is also sus. Even among friends, she always comes out on top and unscathed somehow. Interesting.

you're a hypocrite, you 'call out' racism but read a story founded by a racist, you 'call out' abuse and toxic relationships but read rc where it's full of those relationships
Ah, it appears to be one of the anons who I presume was bothering the people who worked on the It Lives Project. At least, that’s who I’m assuming it is.
Let me state right now that I do not agree with or approve of in any way what the head of the It Lives Project posted. I thought it was the stupidest, racist, most ridiculous post I had ever seen from the Choices tumblr fandom. Got it? Got it.
I have also asked numerous times which stories in RC portray toxic relationships, yet have never received any clear cut answers. I have also stated numerous times that RC is not an app I play often as I don’t have a lot of time to play it.
But we both know you don’t care for rational answers.
If you are the same anon who I assume you to be, you have harassed several writers working on the It Lives Project even though they had nothing to do with the racist post. Nothing. To. Do. With. It.
And given that some of the writers you came after were people of color who put their blood, sweat, and tears into the It Lives Project to make it as inclusive and respectful of various identities as they could?
Well, anon, let’s just say that doesn’t sit well with me.
It seems as if you’re trying to stir up drama in the fandom rather than coming from a place of actual concern, because if you really did care? You’d be leaving these blameless people alone and not targeting them for merely being associated with the racist post which, might I add, they didn’t even know about until a week ago.
The head of the It Lives Project stated that she is open to taking criticism for the insensitive post she made and has owned up to her actions. Do not go after the other people who worked on the project. Once again, they are blameless in the matter.
Take it up with her. Do not target them.
And if you are truly a person who’s coming from a place of concern, turn off anon, because if your intentions are pure, why hide behind anon asks?
But I know you won’t. You’re just interested in stirring up drama from behind a nice, anonymous computer screen and blaming people of color for another person’s racist post because that’s the most excitement your life will ever amount to.

Personal Experience [From Italia].
So, I just got back from Milan, where I stayed for a full week. Had a fantastic time. And would encourage anybody to go and visit.
There was one thing that happened whilst I was there, that I wanted to write about. It happened via my literary Tumblr blog – through the messaging system on there. Here’s what occurred:
I had been out and about in the town and had really enjoyed it. And when I got back to my hostel I wrote some stuff on my blog; a fairly simple post about how I loved the vibrant zeal of Europe. And whenever I return to the Bloc, I always think that it was just so stupid that the UK left it. That Brexit was such a naïve disaster. I mentioned that I was Scottish in the post; and also said that I wasn’t overtly nationalistic as a Scotsman or Briton: only that I admired the rich energy of Europe and hoped the United Kingdom would reconnect with the Bloc in the future.
A few hours later I saw I had some messages. From this other person, who had no profile photo, and was only called ‘Anonymous’. He’d sent me like fifteen messages. (I actually don’t know if the person was even male, but I’m guessing it was a man.)
The 15 messages were snippets of this most hideous garble. He opened by saying, “Go back to the United Kingdom you Scottish bastard! And stay there! Don’t bring Milan into your political views.” And then he was calling me a “kilt-wearing, tartan, alcoholic Scot. Get some experience, you drunk arsehole!” Alongside saying that Europe belonged to the “Nazis in Germany; and that Europe was controlled by them”.
I don’t remember the exact lines, but, man: it was just staggeringly offensive. [And also shit writing. Lols.]
Anyway. I was really surprised and it was a bit upsetting. Because I’ve never in my 30 years experienced any racist abuse for being Scottish. ^ And as I mentioned above, I originally said in the post that I wasn’t a nationalist, per se. I still love Scotland, but, umm, when I’m writing stories, novels, poems, essays, personal writing, I’m not usually wearing a kilt.
I called up my friend Henry after I’d gotten the hate mail. He was helpful about it and said he’d had similar experiences across his life. Henry is Scottish too. But he has an English accent (because his parents are English), and just because that’s how he talks. He said he got a lot of shit for being English in school, and … he’s from Scotland. That actually sounded way worse than my experience in this case.
The incident didn’t ruin my holiday by any means. I was hurt for a few hours and I posted on Tumblr again about what’d happened, and received this array of supportive messages from folks that follow me. Which cheered me up a bit.
I suppose I couldn’t understand why somebody would attack me for being Scottish. It sounded like this man, whoever he was, was basing his knowledge of Scots on the Simpsons character Groundskeeper Willie. This cartoon character is not offensive – because it’s a joke. It’s the Simpson’s writers making fun of the stereotype and is not meant to be taken seriously, and that’s what I thought about it when I grew up watching this beloved sitcom.
I’ve worked with many people from other nations across my life. And I’m often interested in their language: I try to learn their words for English words, just out of a curiosity in linguistics. And I ask them questions about what it’s like in their country.
Moreover, when I went to university, I had loads of friends who were non-UK, and they’re still my mates. From Germany, Singapore, Czechia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland, Polska, America – all sorts of places. I just liked them and got on with them. And they helped me out if I had problems, and me them.
(Just for the record: I am notoriously clumsy when it comes to trying to speak other languages. Or just plain bad, rather. For instance, there was a time when I was at a wedding in Poland. And was introduced to this woman. And I held out my hand to her and said, “Dziękuję!”, which means “Thank you.” She just blinked. It could’ve been worse: she could have laughed. And it was super embarrassing, but ultimately only funny.)
Hmm. In a tiny way I can now understand why people get so offended over racism. Of course, my thing was only small in terms of the horrors that other folks suffer across the globe.
Going back to the England thing again: my father is English, so I always found that anti-England stuff insulting as well. I love England too and many people who have influenced me were from there (William Shakespeare, John Lennon, Virginia Woolf, Charles Dickens, George Orwell, Pete Townshend, William Wordsworth, Graeme Greene … Paul Scholes. There are many). The whole point is that I adore the creative minds from England.
There was this other occasion – just as final example – where one of my mates was coy about ‘coming out’ to me as being gay. And he finally told me, shyly, after a few months. Then asked me what I thought about it. I said, “I don’t care.” And he just laughed because it was a refreshing answer.
The main conclusion is that bigotry should be eradicated through knowledge. Having a wealth of knowledge is the most crucial thing. I hope education spreads across the world.
I suppose I could’ve written this essay and posted it to that bigot who attacked me anonymously online.
But I figured a quotation was more relevant for the mood I was in at the time. So I just wrote back to him:
“I am the Walrus. Yoo goo coo choo.”
And he hasn’t responded with anything since.

you’re right about the blackpink hate, i’ve seen them say they deserve the sexism they receive cos of what they sing about or wear. i’ve asked what’s problematic about blackpink and only been told it’s because they are fatphobic or something in their lyrics but they’re really just picking on the smallest non existent things. and if you’re dragging bp calling them fatphobic then how about jungkook saying he didn’t eat for five days before a video shoot, what is that promoting. every tiny thing from bp gets hate and i do think it is in part jealously, which they might not even recognise, that these are beautiful talented women that have more of a shot with the men they desire and i think they see them as more openly sexual? (idk the word to use) than other girl groups who they hate on less. and why do they hate on other boy groups too, i don’t get it. and the olivia hate! kept calling her an industry plant even though a lot of them are older than her so should know better than to hate on a teen girl. and denying she’s a woc!
they make bts seem like the whole industry in both korea and the west is against them. you can’t even joke about them or even mildly criticise. and they’re seen as socialist kings for super vague references in music from years ago, someone said no one has done more for socialism than them lol now they’re all doing their own things, i think their mistakes are gonna be harder to hide and their fans are in for a rude awakening from the fantasies of them they’ve made in their heads. and bts is to blame too because they encourage this behaviour but i think it will backfire on them long term. again sorry for the rant but i’d get dragged on twitter for this and it’s been annoying the hell out of me lmfao
yeah exactly. i find it so odd when people act like millionaires working in the music industry could possibly be socialists just because they posted a black square once or said racism = bad </33
like they're all pretty far from being socialists and it's ok to just like them ???? i especially hate how #that fanbase acts like these 7 men can never be criticised and are the kindest people in the world whilst (the fans) simultaneously slutshame others and make racist comments in their defense like???

I am a selfshipper / yumejoshi and I am very open about this! This reflects in my works which are very OC/Canon heavy. I do not mind interacting with people who are not so feel free to interact with me either way (may it be posts, tags, dms or the askbox)! But if you do not feel comfortable with this fact, I suggest that you avoid this blog altogether since I share and post about this stuff a lot!
I love to write and talk about writing! Writing is my passion!
I experiment with my writing. While most of it is sfw and rather light hearted, I can and will write about darker themes sometimes! These posts receive a content warning however and I have a tag available in my tag list so you can filter that stuff.
I am not a single fandom blog! Though I have a primary interest which can change. My current primary interest is Ensemble Stars.

No one is racist for wanting Bucky to be captain america but we can tell a lot from a personnes reaction to Sam receiving the mantle instead. Your reaction was very racist. Maybe take a step back and reflect on that.
Or even show your post to your Black friends and ask them what they think about the way you answered. This is not an attack on you, I want you to realize how awful the things you are saying are, so you can correct it, because obsviously you don't realize it.
If you said/did something racist, apologize and never do it again and move on... don't double back and refuse to admit that you're wrong because that's how racism prospers.
Since you're the only somewhat kind message I got, I'll ask you. Without insults, quote me what I said that was racist. I did have two Black friends read the post. One before I posted it (the post with the pics) who said something to the idea of, "I think you're good. That's just an opinion, not something for anyone to cry about." And another friend read it after I got the response and he said, "Ignore them. Some people just wanna be mad." He didn't even want me to respond again and feed the fire and he was probably right.
Two friends that I know and love and trust have said that this is being blown way out of proportion. One is even in favor of Sam!Cap (though altogether he's a bigger DC fan than Marvel) and thinks my response was unoffensive and just me stating how I saw things. And one is in favor of Bucky!Cap and was the first Black friend to bring up his dissatisfaction with Sam!Cap which happened without me having ever brought it up in the first place. (He honestly brought my attention to the fact that not just white people were preferential to Bucky because before that I was scared to say anything for fear of being called racist). Both agree that I haven't said anything offensive here and I have reread my posts and I don't think I have said anything offensive. I was simply telling the OP that not everyone who opposes Sam is doing so for racist reasons. I never denied that some people are doing it for racist reasons. Of course they are. If the thing that I have said is that Marvel was pandering when they chose Sam, we can agree to disagree on that. Neither of us have proof and never will. And as I've said, anyone can be pandered to and sometimes we accept it because we like it. There's nothing inherently wrong with that either, I guess. I'm guilty of it. But it's not something to argue about when there's no hard evidence either way. It's just a feeling we both have supporting our opinions. If there is anything else, please point it out. I wanna know and I legit wanna show my friends.
And just to be clear, the only things I took real offense from the OP was the straight up "YOU ARE RACIST" because I disliked the role given to one(1) Black character (when I like both character and the actor) and the insinuation that I somehow don't have Black friends when I have more Black friends than white and it felt like a jab OP had no proof of just to invalidate us. At this point, I am of the opinion the OP was never open to a conversation on the matter and just enjoys the superiority they feel when calling others racist. Honestly, by the amount of mail I got telling me to kill myself or that they hoped I died, I'm assuming a lot of tumblr never grew out of that. I actually appreciate that your message didn't directly tell me to die, but I do think we are seeing things very differently.

Hey! Long time fan of your blog, first time sending in an ask. I got myself into a bit of a pickle recently. Someone I didn't know needed a beta. I agreed without seeing if our styles meshed. Very impulsive decision on my part and I'm now kicking myself for not doing a bit of research first. Turns out, they're a newbie. They make a lot of rookie mistakes and while I find the premise of their fic interesting, their execution needs work. I get that we're all entering the fandom at different skill levels. It's a beautiful thing. It's not bad that they're a newbie, I've worked with newbies before. The problem I'm facing is that I don't know how deep into my critique I should go. I asked them of course (as should any beta worth their salt because communication is key) and all they mentioned was that they struggle with grammar, spelling, and punctuation. This writer then talked about how negative feedback from anyone makes them cry. They also said they have traumatic past experiences with betas. Which of course made me wary of giving complicated concrit. In my experience, people like that benefit from light edits but mainly cheerleading. I don't want them to have another sour experience, I want to be helpful. A source of positivity and support. Unfortunately, they flat out asked me after I read the fic if I disliked anything, which has left me feeling confused. Surely they wouldn't want negative feedback from me if it'll make them cry? They have said multiple times if people dislike or hate their stories that they cry. They've even called themselves sensitive. I really don't want to hurt them. But idk. If they post this fic and get flamed for it, I'd feel guilty and responsible. And also like a liar because yeah there were things I could have pointed out that could have maybe spared them harassment. I guess I'm catastrophizing the situation? And heck, for all I know, I'm completely wrong and maybe my criticism is unfounded and I'm just biased. I guess I'm second guessing myself in every aspect here. I even had a panic attack over it, which seems not good? I don't know what to do. Sorry my ask is a jumbled mess but that makes sense I suppose because I feel like a mess, too.
*hugs you lots*
You're 100% correct that communication is key in the writer/beta relationship, and it seems like right now the communication is only going one way. You know what that writer wants, but they don't know how they're making you feel.
If that writer truly does have that degree of sensitivity to critique, they should also have ways of dealing with it. It's unfortunate, but they can't expect everyone else to be able to manage their emotional state. They have to do that themselves.
They asked for spelling and grammar help and you gave it to them. If they want critique on other aspects of their writing or story, that should start the conversation over again. How detailed do you want me to be? How should I phrase my opinions? Do you want suggestions for improvement or just my impressions? Should I look at plot? Characterization? Canon compliance? In-story timelines? Should I point out any stereotyping I might have noticed or anything that might be considered racist, homophobic, ableist etc.?
If they're not ready or not willing or not able to receive feedback about those things, then you're not able to provide it. If they do want that feedback, then you can work together to figure out how to get that feedback across. They probably also need to know that any criticism you're giving them is about the story, not about them.
All that said, this is taking a heavy emotional toll on you and I think it's perfectly reasonable of you to say that you don't want to go any further with your feedback because the idea that you might accidentally upset them is upsetting you. Your feelings matter in this situation too.
That's my thoughts on this situation, but I've never had to beta for someone this sensitive before. Have any of the rest of you? And if you're an author who takes feedback to heart like this, what can a beta do to make it easier to hear?
