in hindsight, maybe it was a bad idea for a married couple in college to adopt a cat.
or at least, that’s what atsumu’s been telling you for the past week now ever since you’ve impulsively brought home a kitten you found stranded in the rain.
you thought it was heroic of you, and atsumu, your loving husband, did not, but he wasn’t just about to say that to your face.
see, atsumu hates cats — absolutely resents them; they left hair everywhere and made his nose itchy — but he does love you, so he looks at his ring, and tells himself to suck it up and let you keep it home anyways.
“i think he’s cute.” you whisper, cooing over the sight of the brown haired kitten sleeping soundly on your bed.
atsumu, his arms crossed as he stands beside you, grumbles, “he took over the bed.”
and you nod, “he did it cutely.”
it’s eleven in the evening, the day just ended for the two of you after hours of horrible classes and gym time, and normally, it’d be time for you and atsumu to hit the hay and go to sleep side by side, but tonight, there’s a cat in the middle of your bed.
atsumu looks at you, standing with an unconvinced expression in the dark, his arms still crossed, “we cannot sleep on the floor.”
and you look back at him, “oh, i’m sleeping on the couch, you can sleep on the floor.”
“or you know, we can both sleep together,” he points frantically to the mattress in front the both of you, “on our bed!”
“oh, don’t you dare wake him up.” you look at atsumu, shaking your head.
and he looks back at you, “we have no place to sleep!”
“you have no place to sleep,” you remind him, a grin on your face as you throw your blanket over your shoulder, “i have the couch.”
he deadpans, “you're the worst.”
and you bring your hand up, “tell it to the ring.”
he narrows his eyes, the breeze of the cold night air making his hair on his arms raise, and he wants to yawn again — groggy and tired — and all he wants to do is fall asleep next to you.
“that's it,” atsumu shakes his head, his eyes tired and a yawn in the back of his throat, he looks at you, seriously, “the cat or me.”
and you snort.
you gape, “you're joking.”
atsumu keeps his gaze on you, his arms firmly crossed over his chest, “either the cat gets off the bed or i’m going to sleep at samu’s tonight.”
you think he’s being dramatic, and you also know for a fact that he wouldn’t drive two hours east just to prove a point, so you think it over.
a second passes, and another, and another, and the air remains quiet.
atsumu gasps, his hand on his chest in a dramatic way, and he looks at you, “you hesitated!”
and you hold back a laugh, “no! i didn't!”
“you did!” he scoffs, “you so hesitated!”
you shake your head, “i was thinking!”
and he scoffs harder, “you had to think about it!”
his hair is a mess and his face is turning red, and you find him awfully cute like this that you almost want to give in and stop with the teasing.
but atsumu is clingy, and it’s always so fun to mess with him.
“oh, but look at him,” your eyebrows furrow, laughter still intertwining with your words, but you coo anyways when you point to the sleeping cat still sprawled across your bed.
your voice softens, “he’s just a sweet boy who needs a place to sleep.”
your small moment of softness shatters as atsumu takes you by the shoulders, his movement startling you a bit as he makes you look up at him.
“i’m your sweet boy who needs a place to sleep!” he whines.
and his eyebrows furrow, his lips twitching into a scowl, “me!”
“tsumu,” your voice breaks into laughter, but you try to hold it back seeing as it only makes him even more agitated than he already is.
“i can’t believe this, you've known this cat for like a week,” he grumbles, rolling his eyes at you, and you pretend not to notice when he bites back a yawn.
he mutters, complaining, “you married me. that's a cat.”
and he settles in your embrace, deflated against your body as he mopes and whines and complains about how you so treacherously betrayed him.
you smile silently, “okay.”
he looks up at you like a wounded child, “okay what?”
he's dramatic, and clingy, and he wakes you up at 2 in the morning and asks you if you still love him because you accidentally kicked away from his embrace in your sleep — but as far as good husbands go, atsumu has always been the best in making sure you know how much he loves you.
“c’mon.” you roll your eyes, taking his hand into yours as you trail him to walk with you.
he follows behind you, “you're not actually making me go sleep at samu’s right.”
you shake your head, “we’re sleeping on the couch.”
(you were never going to let him sleep on the floor, you just wanted to see how he’d be if you teased the idea to him.
you think he’s cute — clingy, but cute.)
“oh, thank god.” atsumu breathe out a sigh of relief, his shoulders falling, and he flips himself to your back, letting his body weight completely fall on you as you walk over to the couch.
you grumble, “you’re heavy.”
and he yawns, “tell it to the ring.”
in hindsight, it might've been a bad idea for the two of you to adopt a cat — you with your classes, and him with going pro — and your husband’s also made it very clear that he didn’t like it when the cat’s around.
but even as he says that, you've seen the way atsumu’s been around the cat — how he wakes up earlier than his alarms to feed him, you've seen him let him nap on his chest, and you've certainly seen him talk to him in a stupid baby voice when he thinks you aren't watching.
so it might still be a tremendously horrible idea, but it definitely feels a lot like a family.
