Hey everyone, long time no see! Apologies for the months of silence - but I’m back now! I needed to take a much needed step back from HOCO and focus on some other projects of mine (as well as play a ungodly amount of BG3 hehe).
On my break, I also decided to kinda tear down HOCO and rebuild it from the ground up. I wasn’t really pleased with how the story was going and I think that really contributed to the burnout I felt with the project. I still would like to include the premise of the various life stages, but may go about it in a different way than I had initially planned - things to think about more I suppose!
Anyways here’s some behind the scenes of what I’ve been up to - starting with revisiting the cast’s (+ Nico’s) main outfits and updating them :3

A/N - IDK ABOUT YALL BUT ITS COLD AS BALLS OUTSIDE MY GOSH. every winter i’m appalled at the temperature drops in the morning, the only good thing this year is that i got inspired. i actually dont use Sana’s name btw so if you wanna imagine someone else, you’re free to do so it’s none of my business, ENJOY
Getting woken up by the mattress bouncing a couple times underneath you wasn’t something you expected the night before.
Confusion levels were high, and the sheets ruffling together behind you weren’t any help. You had to open your eyes and look over your shoulder to find answers.
You still didn’t really know what to expect, but seeing your girlfriend shivering as she adjusted the blanket around her own body nearly got it off yours.
“What are you doing?” You mumbled still half asleep.
“It’s so cold.” She complained as she continued to wrap her body in whatever way she could. “Like, actually freezing it’s insane.”
You chuckled, rubbing your eyes before turning on your back. “Did you turn the heater on?”
“No, do you want me to die?”
You rolled your eyes at her drama and began to sit up in order to do it yourself. Sure, there was a possibility she wasn’t exaggerating, but that’s one more reason to do it. The love of your life will not freeze to death on your watch.
“Where are you going?” She asked with her head peeking out of the covers.
“Going to turn the heater on.” You answered, throwing the covers off yourself before leaving a kiss on her forehead.
“Okay, well hurry. I don’t want to go retrieve your frozen body in the hallway… I’m not in the mood.”
You only laughed, promising her that it would only take a couple minutes—and it did take a couple minutes, but that was two minutes too long.
She was not exaggerating at all, even the wooden floors beneath your feet felt cold to the touch. You ended up having to sprint back to your bed the way she had done a moment ago.
The sight seemed to amuse her according to the giggles that left her lips and bounced off your bedroom walls. You couldn’t ignore them, nor how they warmed you up on their own on this cold morning.
The way she opened her arms up to invite you into her blanket cocoon made you sway. You gladly jumped into it with the biggest smile, letting her coddle you as you focused on actually warming yourself up.
“Don’t laugh, that was you five minutes ago.” You said, snuggling into her side.
“So what? You should have laughed then too.” She shrugged.
You ignored her words as an idea popped in your mind. It was a little mean, and you felt a little bad about it, but the eventual reward of hearing her laugh was enough to make you proceed.
So instead of answering her, you snuck your cold hand beneath her shirt. Your fingers only grazed her skin, but it was enough to make her shriek at the temperature shock.
“Y/n!” She whined, slapping your hand away as the annoyance in her voice turned into the melodious giggles you loved so much.
“What? You can do the same.”
“It’s not fair, my hands are warm now.”
“And I need to warm up. Sounds ideal to me.” You shrugged innocently. “Although, I would like it either way…”
“This behavior will only get you on the naughty list.” She warned, reminding you of how close the year-end festivities were.
“I wouldn’t mind not getting presents.” You shrugged again before adding, “That means you’re all I need by the way.”
“Am I weak or was that good?” She wondered, making you laugh.
“That was easily my worst work, I’m sorry baby, but you’re weak.”
“Your worst work, huh?” She repeated, and you nodded. “Well your fingers have been doing a great job…”
She finally acknowledged the random shapes you gently caressed all over her side, and your heart started racing as the near future she let on allowed various ideas to bloom in your mind.
“Maybe I’ll give you a chance to redeem yourself.” She whispered, making the moment that much more intimate.
You only smiled at her suggestion. As much as the ideas were enough for your blood to rise in temperature, it was just too damn cold.
“I’m sorry, I just can’t right now. There’s no way I’m getting out of this blanket.”
“You tease. Who said you’d have to get out of it?” She pointed out, leaving soft kisses along your jawline only for you to try and get away from them.
“Come on, Y/n, can you think of a better way to warm up?”
“Yes, by cuddling you like this and going back to sleep so I can ignore it” You argued, nuzzling your face further into her neck, where she couldn’t access any of your weaknesses.
You felt her breathe in before letting it out in a heavy sigh. “You’re lucky I like you.”
“I know, that’s what I tell myself everyday.”

ive never seen someone associate numbers w personalities before (then again i literally know NO ONE else with synaesthesia lmao) but that's really interesting! all i know is that the even numbers are some form of orange/brown/yellow/red for me
i think synaesthesia is So intriguing and when i was a child i didn't even realize it was not normal to see colours for people and words until i told it to others and they were like "wait what, that's not normal" so yeah, im glad it gave you something to think about too!

•im gonna say this just to get it out the way but bc curly always felt kinda,,,,outta place????if yknow what i mean??????
•like he always felt different from everyone around him kinda
•ion wanna make like a bunch if hcs for it cause im lazy rn BUT curly was always like researching and found that he shares a lot of similarities w ppl who r autistic, but he never wanted to self diagnose himself cause he was always scared that he was overreacting and that he was wrong
•honestly it was gonna b hard for him to get an actual diagnoses cause 1) hes broke and the test r expensive 2) hes black, theres a big chance that hes gonna get misdiagnosed even IF he gets that chance to get tested, also he mask rlly well
•ok so we all know autism is a huge ass spectrum and it doesnt show up the same for everyone, so w curly i feel like hes hyposensitive and sensory seeking (idk i dont think many ppl talk about these things enough so heres da rep)
•hes always fidgety n shit and touching things and ppl just wrote that off as him just being handsy
•he has a few vocal stims from songs and videos saying them over and over, he rocks back n forth from time, he paces while listening to music, and hes always bouncing his leg and biting his lip if he has dry skin there, cracking his knuckles etc
•he also bites like a lot of things, pencils, n stuff like that, so maybe him w a sensory chee necklace???
•his hyposensitivity is part of the reason y ppl r surprised when he isnt hurt by certain things like rlly hot water n what not
•he actually doesnt get overstimulated a whole lot, like it does happen, but not a lot cause it takes quite a bit for him to actually get to that point
•if u hc darry to b autistic i feel like there would b times where they were both overstimulated and just had to sit out in a quiet room and just not say anything to each other, they dint get along oh so well but in those moments they truly understand each other
•curly tries to calm down from overstimulation by listening to loud ass music (same)
•his hyperfixation r horror movies (more specifically halloween, scream, and american psycho cause i say so) or music if u want that

I really let asks get away from me lately. I was super focused on working on that Patreon Moment. With that done I can finally think about doing other things, so here’s a new collection of answers!

There won’t be. I’m sorry if you were hoping for that! The Patreon moment is meant to be entirely optional, it’s not something that gets you extra content in the main game.
Is the new CG artist the main one now? :0 I’ve noticed theres been a difference in the art style recently. Is the old CG artist still going to make art for the game? :0
The original artist still makes CGs for the game sometimes, but he mainly focuses on character sprites.
Are you going to put the NSFW our life moment on a website other than patreon? I would love to get it but I can't use patreon atm.
I don’t know. I'm afraid we can't release the Patreon Moment on a normal game storefront because we can't mix 18+ content with our family friendly game. If there's some other place similar to Patreon where it's not the normal type of full-scale public content releases we'd consider using that, but I’m not sure if there is another site that’s better than Patreon in that regard. I'm sorry.
Out of curiosity, in all of your games so far, which characters in each were the most fun to write? They obviously don't have to be your favorite characters!

Mostly, I’ve been watching/listening to Authortube videos as of late! It’s people who talk generally about the process of how books become traditionally published and/or share their own experience as they attempt to be published. I don’t have an interest in writing normal text based books, but it’s really interesting to hear about that world. I’m listening to a video about royalties right now as I answer these asks.

I noticed a bug with the Patreon moment when it comes to what your character wears. When Jamie and Cove are kissing while my character only had dresses selected, I had both the option to remove the dress or to remove the shirt... Picking one of the options to interact with Cove, after he removed his shirt, it had Jamie remove their shirt followed by ther pants despite only having dresses picked.

I’m afraid things haven’t been changed or removed, so I think you might’ve accidentally picked the wrong things somewhere along the way and locked yourself out of being able to propose by mistake. Sometimes you meant to say you want to get married but instead you mis-click and have it so the MC isn’t thinking about marriage or something. All I can suggest is starting from the beginning of Step 3 and making sure to follow the steps listed in the FAQ. I’m sorry for that.

This is the same situation as the above. We didn’t remove things and you’re not wrong that there are sometimes those options. But there are various choices you have to make to get those options and it sounds like you accidentally missed something. If your relationship isn’t long-term, you can’t do it for example.

You get it by telling Cove about his dad offering you money to be his friend in Step 1 and Step 2. You can’t get both in one playthrough, since you can only tell Cove the truth once. I’m really glad you liked it!

Unfortunately, it’s not really something we have a plan for. We couldn’t finish the game if we tried to include every disability and have it be meaningful. It’d just be too much content to create. But if we decide to only include a few, how would we choose which disabilities get to be represented and which are left out? I don’t know. It’ll probably have to be something we don’t include as an option again, sadly. I’m sorry.

Honestly, I would like to thank Our Life for helping me come to terms with my sexuality. Before, I never would've actually thought that it was possible to like boys romantically and still be asexual. Hm, did you use the Cove creator? Maybe there’s a bug where using the creator to add bracelets doesn’t fulfill the requirement to give Cove a bracelet in Step 3.

It’s in the Soiree Moment. You have to be just friends with Cove, indifferent, or crushing but not ask Cove to the dance at all. Then while there you can find someone new to dance with. But if you bring Cove to the dance while crushing, the MC won’t wanna dance with anyone else so you can’t get the scene.
In step 2 when we go to the soiree I made my mc go alone and baxter chooses the mc to dance, i'm curious, why did he pick the mc? sorry if this has been asked before!

I’m afraid I’m not sure what you mean. Are you asking how we programmed the screen or something script related? Adding Moments like that is pretty straightforward, though. You just have buttons that open to different labels and then the scripts are essentially individual short stories/vignettes. Good luck with your VN!

OL1 has the he/him LIs, OL2 is all about other genders.
I don't want to impose on your creative plans, but a parrot could possibly make a good pet in an OL-type game? They're pretty long-lived and likely to still be thriving by the end even if the MC got them back in step 1.

I understand there are technically some animals that could theoretically live long enough to last the whole game that or we could have the MC only get a pet after some years have already passed. You can’t get Cove’s Step 3 confession scene if you have the family comfort you in the car. But that’s not the only way to date him. You can get together with him earlier in the game or later on in Step 4.
Is Mc always going to be the one walking down the aisle or could Cove do it? Also could you choose to have one of your moms walk you?
No. Cove wouldn’t want to walk down the aisle like that and the MC automatically respects that. And the MC also gets to have their preferences respected, so it’s up to you whether they want to do an aisle walk or not. You also can pick who, if anyone, walks with you.
Once step 4 is out, will you be able to go the whole game on crush/love without either of you confessing?
Yes, as long as you tell the game you don’t want to progress the relationship. Even in Step 4 it won’t force you to officially get together.

I know i’ve said this a dozen times...but Walker just keeps getting better and better and better! With every. single. episode. I loved everything about this episode so much and again! Jared live-tweeting it was the best!!! I watched this episode at 3 am lats night again help.

OK SO CRDIREZ BEAUTY EPISODE!!! YES! I loved loved loved loved the development of their friendship in this episode SO MUCH!
First scene Cordirez and them badass rangers catching bad guys together YES!!! Walker trying to find out Micki’s middle name is so cute pls.
I really enjoyed the case they worked here as well. It was both deep and emotional and that twist! YEPPPP SIGN ME UP.
THE BAR SCENE WITH WALKER AND MICKI. AGAIN THEIR FRIENDSHIP! The episode title fit so well here and I’m glad Micki and Walker have really reached a good understanding on a friend and partner level. THEY\RE THE CUTEST PLEASE I LOVE THEM.

-I love how this show is really taking the time to address the difficulties someone like Micki- A Female Latina would go through- the sexism, blatant disrespect and disregard. Micki’s character is also something that’s very well written and acted(Lindsey ily) and portrayed extremely well. One of my favorite things about Walker is how he really trusts Micki, views her as an equal, and wants to earn her trust, not demand it. It’s perfect(cordirez breakdown time). Micki is also slowly letting her fences down around him and it’s a huge and very delightful to see step. I love and adore their friendship and chemistry so much.

That last scene with Walker and his mom was so touching. Walker’s relationship with his parents is so sweet. His mom hugging him and comforting him when Walker said he missed emily so much *cries* I just wanna hold him please.
August being worried for his father’s happiness I JUST. YOU SWEET BOY. I really think messaging Twyla was a baaaaddd move though.
WALKER AND AUGUST SELFIE. The way Walker so easily just picked his son and brought him to him, made him family photographer and that scene. THE BEST.
I genuinely don’t think anything happened between Twyla and Walker. But we’ll have to see.
oKAY SO. Captain James??? It’s just an on and off thing. Do I trust him? Do i don’t? Why did he take those surveillance vids out??? I trust Liam with it and i’m glad he’s looking into it and all. Hopefully it doesn’t backfire badly. I have a very bad feeling that James had something to do with Emily’s death.
THAT STELLA AND BELLE INTERACTION. SO CUTE. Stella giving that jar of jame to try and make up and Belle being all cute and funny I love them. For a sec i was so scared Belle might yell at her but I’m very happy to see that they’re going strong despite all the circumstances- Belle’s parent’s deportation.
ALSO TREVOR IS SO HOT??? I like him and Stella they’re cute. Stella so obviously has a huge crush on him and they ride horses so well together. HHAHAHAH THAT DANCE STELLA DID WHEN HE FOLLOWED HER ON INSTA. SO RELATABLE.
The last Tricki scene mY HEART. ‘’you wanted a hero so you drew one. then you became one’’ Micki is going to be such an inspiration I love her. And the way they interacted, Trey getting a job!!! And Micki’s excitement, THEIR HUG!!! ‘’hugging is one of my superpowers’’ TREY BARNETT I LOVE YOU.
THAT LAST SCENE WHY LEAVE IT LIKE THIS. WHAT IS HAPPENING WHY DOES WALKER OR DUKE APPARENTLY HAVE TO GO BACK.
Anyways! As you can see the entire episode was so enjoyable and I loved it. The best part of this was definitely the Cordirez friendship development and i cannot wait to see where it goes from here!
Speculation/Thoughts for Episode 5:- So it’s for sure that Walker is going back undercover as Duke who’s a baseball...person? Idk he was wearing a baseball hat so :) Walker’s past is now very much mixed in with his present and I AM SCARED. What he’s doing is yet to be revealed but Tywla is coming back and that will just. mess. things. up. The scene in which Walker is yelling at August GOD SO NOT READY FOR THAT. It feels like him and his kids might go back to how they were before. I really don’t want that to happen. Also why am I expecting a major cliffhanger.
HEY BUT THERE’S SHIRTLESS WALKER AND! MICKI RIDING THAT MECHANICAL HORSE IN A BAR OR SMTH AND MORE INSIGHT INTO WHAT TREY IS DOING SO IM VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.
