hi, your hair looks fucking amazing. can I ask you for advice? my head’s currently shaved and I’ve thought about growing the top out like yours, but stopped because the between stage made me look like I had a hedgehog on top of my head. any tips for styling between shaved and your length?

omg thank you!! i'm very flattered! as someone who has been going through it and several times in my life has done the 'lesbian going through it' coping mechanism (shaving my head and growing it back out) i have a lot of experience with the awkward middle stages.

if you're worried about styling while you're growing your undercut out, you can always just grow everything out and wait until it's all a decent length and then trim the sides back down and set the lines of your undercut. i don't know how fast your hair grows, but if it's anything like mine after a month or so you'll have enough to work with and can safely grab a clippers and cut the sides.

however, if you want to start keeping the sides short early and guide your hair through the middle stages, i'll give you my tips.

i'm very lucky to have a relatively thick head of hair, and i keep my hair healthy and strong. but that means my hairs are heavy and crowded, and any vertical styling is a constant battle with gravity. it's very easy for my hair, especially when it's short, to do what you called the 'hedgehog' thing (very accurate) and splay out at all angles, even at its current length. so i've developed a haircare routine that helps with this problem.

i work a very sweaty and messy job, and like to exercise on my own time, so i find myself showering every day, if not twice a day. as a result, i don't use shampoo every time as it will dry my hair out. instead, i use shampoo maybe once every couple weeks, if that. with every shower, i wash my hair and scrub through with water thoroughly to keep my scalp healthy. when i get out of the shower, i dry my hair like 75% and then apply a leave-in moisturizer (Revive, from Lush) and let air dry. once my hair is about 90% dry (not full dry but you can't feel the moisturizer if you run your fingers through it), i apply a small amount of hair gel. i typically use GOT2B ultra glued, but i use a very small amount, typically a bead the size of a pea on my fingertips. i work that in to all of the hair to strengthen the body of my hairs and to give them some structure. the goal isn't to thickly apply the gel to any specific spot to like, gel back the hair or anything. the gel is meant to be applied evenly throughout the top part like the moisturizer. i let the gel dry and then work my fingers through my hair to break some of the rigidity of the gel casting. now that the hair is treated, it's time to style it. i use Axe Messy Look styling paste. i know, but it works. medium hold, low shine. just a little bit worked through my hair gives it a lot of verticality and structure and it stays how i want it to look. your mileage may vary, but finding a hair care routine that works for you will help keep your hair healthy and keep it from splaying out as it grows into the length you want. this will also help you style it the way you want when it reaches full length.

additionally, as you grow out the top part of your undercut, you may want to taper the sides, instead of the sharp short cut up to the sides. this might make the transition less stark and prevent your hair from splaying out in the hedgehog effect. but either way, the early stages don't last very long and i recommend sticking with it. you'll get where you want to be before long.

I was wondering, what are some random Genesis headcanons you have? they can be about anything to do with our favorite dramatic asshole (affectionate) and include other characters like Sephiroth, Angeal and Zack

I'm always up for some new headcanons for our resident trashlord!

Genesis is smallest of the trio, as well as the least built overall. And while he is by no means short or scrawny, it drives him nuts that the others tower over him so easily. But he supposes it isn't all bad. He LOVES standing on tiptoes to glare into Sephiroth's face, and he'd be lying if he said he hasn't jumped onto Angeal's back for a patronizing piggyback ride or two.

Genesis is actually rather talented at knitting and sewing. Angeal may be your go-to laundry guy, but Genesis is immaculate when it comes to patching up uniforms and dispersing much-needed winter socks. He gets embarrassed when you bring it up though.

Gen is the most educated of the three and knows several languages! He is always the group translator on missions.

Genesis and Sephiroth might have a rivalry/sexual tension/unresolved mutual infatuation thing going on, but they absolutely LOVE competing with each other over increasingly stupid non-consequential matters. Whatever petty dispute they can find, they'll seize the opportunity. Races. Staring contests. Endurance trials. Eating contests. Literally the dumbest little adventures. Usually, no one gets hurt. Usually.

Gen's half sister is Aerith I am making this official canon in the Altoverse. Gast is officially his biological father. Bam. It's done.

Seph and Gen have been playing the same chess match for three years running now. As in the same game but each move is like every three months. It's sort of at a stalemate right now because Genesis is losing and REFUSES to make a bad play. Hence, no progress. Every now and then Angeal will sneak over to the board and rearrange some of the pieces just to fuck with them.

Genesis is the most musically talented. He can play guitar, flute, and piano.

Genesis hates camping. He HATES getting dirty and grubby out in the great outdoors. He's a man who values proper haircare and a proper skin routine! And whenever the trio is out enjoying the lovely view by the fire, there's always a circle of mosquitoes that specifically target Genesis. A literal cloud. He's delightfully miserable.

Genesis loves pretending to be overly dramatic to get attention. Dramatic poses. Grief filled soliloquies. Sprawled all over your desk because life is filled with SO MUCH WOE and you're not paying attention to him! So he'll just have to DIE I guess.

Post CC Genesis often looks back on his actions and has no idea why he said/did the things he did. It makes no sense to him. He was jealous, yes. Vengeful, yes. But to hurt both his friends like that... that's not him. He'd never...

Post CC Gen emulates a lot of Sephiroth and Angeal into his personality, vowing to live for both of them. He does his best to be more mature and there is a more serious sense of wisdom there. Even the occasional bit of snarky humor and mischief that the old Genesis exhibited. But more than anything, Genesis is lonely and tired. New connections don't fill the void. New goals can't take back the past. He wants to be a true hero and he'll keep fighting for that cause. But he never wanted to do it alone. Not like this.

Vil appreciates just about everything about you. Realistic with an optimistic attitude, opinionated, honest and individualistic? He took some time to observe you at first, and after getting to know you better, fell head over heels. It was rather embarrassing for him, having to keep himself in check around you. It wouldn't do to have the rest of his dorm members notice his glances towards you and fleeting touches to your hair to "fix it properly".

Vil is big on self-improvement himself, so he appreciates that quality of yours most of all. You both can lift each other up! On that note, he would advice you to think your words through before speaking to avoid tripping over your words. Short pauses to think are better than having to backtrack in his opinion. He cares for you and wants you to be able to express yourself well.

He'd be curious about your writing and drawings, wanting to see what you're working on but only if you let him. He's not very good at telling when someone is uncomfortable, but he'd never want to upset you on purpose. If you do let him see your work, he'll give you his honest critique, but make sure to find at least a few things to compliment. That gives him an idea actually. He'd love to pamper you with spa sessions and skincare. He'd normally do these things by himself, but its better to do them with you. He'd like to experiment with makeup on you too. The answers are created by me for the main character of the sci-fi story I've stopped writing (🙄) I'm hoping it'll give me inspiration to keep going.

What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)

They don't drink alcohol anymore. When they were younger, they would drink pretty much anything put in front of them, and on special occasions they will have (maybe) one or two drinks, but otherwise they don't drink. If they go to a bar/restaurant with someone, they will always let them order first so that the person they're with can order what they want (alcoholic or otherwise) before they put in their soft drink order. Their go to soft drink order is "Kon-ban-wah" which is an artificially produced pineapple soda.

What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)

Their grooming routine is so lax as to be almost non-existent. Haircare is their priority as they figure you can get away with a lot so long as the most noticeable part of you (I.e. your hair) as clean and tidy. But even that is more making sure it's neat than actual "grooming".

What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)

Their cybernetics were fairly pricy. They own them outright, except the skillplug jack ("A discreet head-mounted plug port allows use of an intellectual skillplug for a skill requiring minimal physical ability, up to level-1. Once slotted, a skillplug takes fifteen minutes to boot up and integrate properly." - Cities Without Number, p. 73) they are 25 months into a 36-month contract that forces a 2-minute unskippable ad played directly onto their eyes (also cybernetic) every time they use it. Consequently, they try to avoid using it.

Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)

There's a long scar down the back of their head, the consequence of an errant wire snapping. It cut the skin right up but left no lasting damage. Their hair is long to cover it.

What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)

This is a tricky one. They don't cry often. Not because they're bottling feelings up etc. They just...don't. But at the same time, they do cry at emotional films and other well-written media. So the last time would have been when watching something particularly stirring as opposed to being under emotional distress.

Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)

Oldest child by over a decade. Sibling is the favourite. Not antagonistic towards them, but they don't really talk. They live on opposite sides of the station, not out of animosity, that's just where they happen to be right now.

Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)

Their shoes are stylish, but more importantly comfortable. Their mother always said to spend money on their shoes and beds because if you're not using one you're using the other. They're brown boots that provide proper arch support. They're pretty hard on their shoes so this pair is pretty worn thin.

Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)

Quinn's bunk is very untidy (in contrast to Calliope's) the bed is almost never made and there's usually pyjamas bundled up within the covers. There are a few pictures plastered along the walls, mainly pictures of nice views or fanart that they've printed themselves and hastily stuck to the walls of her bunk.

What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)

They're a big fan of the 'people's' holidays. Things like Labour Day, that were won in protests for workers' rights. These protests were a long time ago (because of the way the guilds operate, most of the workers have decent rights) but they're still more appreciative of them than "Founder's Day".

What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

Along with their cybernetics (that they can't help but take with them) they always have their watch (which stores a tiny PC and uses their eyes as an output display) and their notebook. The notebook is an input for the watch. It looks like an actual notebook (with paper pages etc) but it stores everything written in it digitally, and blank pages in it can be used to display things from the watch.

Their name's Quinn Taylor FYI. But that's a name I regularly use in works in progress so absolutely subject to change.

Making Change

If it were easy it wouldn't be change.

Ok, that's it for being deep. But what if all the complications of "change" are a result of generational trauma?

I know, I know, just another #millennial not wanting to take responsibility for their own life... #projectingmuchboomer but think about it for another minute.

How many times have you told your parents that something was "difficult to do" like math or science and got told "oh, I never got it in school either". The resulting train of thought is "oh so its genetic, we are both bad at XYZ".

But what if that just cemented a mental block that causes the triggered gut response of "I can't do that"?

As I got older, I found that there was math and science I was good at and that made sense to my brain that wasn't taught in my school.

There is also the physical aspects of generational trauma.

I'm going to hazard a guess that at some point in your life something you do or don't like about you physical appearance and attributes, has been credited to a relation of some kind.

Gods know that my aunt has told me enough times that I "look like her" that the thought of getting back into healthy weight seems impossible.

Those thoughts, coupled with chronic stress and fatigue makes it seem like EVERYTHING is working against me. Like the universe itself is part of the plot. I couldn't get the "I can't do it" thought spiral out of my head. So I decided I needed to get back into my Craft.

I've been a practicing witch since I was about 12 years old. I come from a christian household, but that has changed over the years. We were raised Spanish-Roman catholic-- iykyk-- but now, I'm open pagan, my sister is atheist, my mom and dad are agnostic(mom more so than dad), and my Friendboy is self religious.

When I tell you this house is peaceful and the vibes are immaculate.

As adults who are owning their truths, myself and my parents and sister have never been closer. Now we aren't having to hide pieces of ourselves from each other its amazing the relationships you can have with family.

And I have lost weight from when I moved back into my parent's house. I was less than 10 pounds away from 300, which is the heaviest I've ever been. I'm currently at 262, still high but less than were I was. I want to be in "onderland", like 190 or so. And before you go "that's too high, women of short stature need to be XXX" EVERY BODY IS DIFFERENT.

And I have high testosterone and back when I worked out, male muscle density.

Sooooo I know that my body now, at 5ft3in and 262, I wear a size 14/16 pant, which I've been told "can't be right" and if I start working out, I tone up quickly.

I just haven't been able to find the motivation.

The voices in my brain can be cruel and tell me there is not point to try. But recently, with the Lionsgate portal, I felt a shift inside.

I want to be the very best version of who I can be now. Not who I was or who I used to want to be. I need to see clearly where I am now and do the work needed to become the best that I can be.

So that meant change. And change is hard. But here are the changes I've started making: *Putting my phone away by 1030pm and lights off by 11 *Waking up by 630 to let my brain wake up slowly instead of waking up late and stressed *Sorting and taking supplements and figuring out what makes my body feel better *Making our bed in the AM, no particular time just aiming for before noon (I work from home) *Better haircare and working to find a routine that works for me *Finding a skincare routine with products I like, I prefer minimal ingredients and as natural as possible *Remembering that "SELF CARE" is not a waste of time and that not only is it good for my mental and physical health, its good for my spirit *SHADOW WORK IS NOT JUST IMPORTANT BUT NECESSARY

This is just the start of the changes I'm making for the better, more will be added as I make process.

Do you have any mundane hcs about Guts/Griffith/Griffguts? Like, what's their favorite food, if there's anything they like to do besides fighting, if there was a spot they liked to meet when they were friends, stuff like that. Personally I like to think that Griffith loves reading even for non-practical reasons, especially epic poetry/novels and heroic romances (maybe he even sleeps with a copy of Berserk's version of The Iliad under his pillow à la Alexander the Great lol).

I agree with you about Griffith lol, I always imagine him as a bit of a nerd lowkey. Actually to be specific, I headcanon him as a chronic insomniac who gets most of his reading done at night by candle light or whatever. I feel like he's the type who wants something to focus on because he doesn't like his mind wandering while trying to fall asleep, so he stays up til he's exhausted and gets like, a few hours of sleep a night for a few nights in a row then goes to bed early and gets 10 to make up for it.

So there's one mundane headcanon I guess.

Idk I don't tend to really think of details like favourite foods and stuff lol, I'm not a very creative person so all my headcanons are like, specifically extrapolating from canon. But I might have a few that sort of fit this ask.

I know I heard this somewhere else but I really like the headcanon that the shift in how Miura drew Griffith's hair, the way it got more wavy later on in the Golden Age basically, is because Griffith got access to haircare products lol.

I think Guts cooked a lot. I imagine them out in a camp somewhere, you'd probably have one person cooking for a group a lot, yk not particularly organized but if someone's making a pot of something their friends all share it, and I like to think Guts was often the one throwing meals together, bc iirc he cooked for him and Gambino when he was a kid. (And relatedly but not relevant to the ask, I also think Casca never was and couldn't really cook to save her life.)

Griffith could also cook but never really had to.

I also headcanon Griffith as a terrible singer. If the Hawks ever sang marching songs or folk songs around a campfire while Judeau played the lute or whatever, he'd just smile and listen.

I think during after-battle parties, which the Hawks threw all the time, Guts and Griffith had a predictable routine of getting 4-5 drinks in and leaving the main group to go sit and talk together, and have definitely fallen asleep on each other.

lol I think the only time we've ever seen Guts doing something fun just to pass the time is when he was gambling with the Raiders shortly before the Doldrey battle. Plus he knows a lot about them, as we see in the Campfire of Dreams monologue. So I think Guts probably hung out with them a lot more than we get to see, maybe more often than he hung out with the other Hawk captains, besides Griffith.

But given the choice I think he'd always choose to hang out with Griffith instead, and he has chronic watching-the-door syndrome when Griffith's not around because he always lowkey wants to see him. Classic crush behaviour.

Also wrt favourite food, I don't have any ideas for Guts but I'd like to think that Griffith's is something really peasant-y, rather than anything fancy he gets as a nobleman. Like idk, rabbit stew his mom used to make or something. Idk anything about medieval food, but I love everything that sort of belies Griffith's image amongst the nobles and connects him to his core humanity.
