Audiobook woes aside, I am on a long fantasy kick right now, so if you have any secondary world fantasy recs (especially queer!) please send them my way! I just finished The Hands of the Emperor and other stuff I’ve enjoyed includes A Taste of Gold and Iron, A Strange and Stubborn Endurance, Captive Prince, A Song of Ice and Fire, and of course, the Wheel of Time series and LotR, both of which I’m currently reading and rereading

I can't be only one, right...?
Tumblr media
I wanted to finish the game and then write this post but I gave up. I put in 100 plus hours and just could not go on once I got into act three. Maybe no one will hear my pitiful cry from the void, but I must scream for the sake of my sanity.
I was completely and utterly disappointed by Baldur's Gate 3.
It had huge maps like an open world game yet I had no desire to explore the settings despite their beauty. It had hours of dialogue as an RPG would and yet I found myself skipping characters' responses. The game mechanic structure was inspired by DnD, a story-telling game dictated by some rules, lucky rolls and the extent of players' imagination, yet I was strong-armed into fighting impossibly stacked battles. A story-telling game dependent on the players’ attachment to their and their teammates' characters and yet this game lacked any kind of narrative consistency or depth of feeling.
Larian wanted to make an open world RPG, based off of DND mechanics and somehow did the worst version of all three. The studio touts that Baldur’s Gate 3 has 17,000 possible endings and 2 million words, but to what end? What did this game have to say about what happens when people rise to the challenge and become heroes despite their circumstances or fall into the dark and become the monsters they were supposed to fight? What did it suggest might happen when fate deals you a bad hand but in doing so also helps you find true friends or love with the other? Ultimately, nothing.
BG3 is so large that it ends up being incoherent. No writing or game structure decisions were made to keep the narrative tight and on theme. It urges players to choose a moral alignment, but most decisions, good or bad, seem to end up having little effect in the end. To play the game at all you have to resort to save scumming and that in turn deflates the possible impact of so many plot points of the narrative overall.
Forcing players to save scum in order to progress through the game is terrible design in general. Statistically speaking the bosses make impossible critical hits again and again. I was playing in the game’s “casual mode” and found myself struggling to get through confrontations with bosses that were at a lower level than my own. If you are reading and thinking oh well you are probably not using tactics or spells well, etc., let’s do a little experiment…
Take your d20 (https://rolladie.net/roll-a-d20-die if you don’t have one in person). In the third act of BG3 I had an AC of 13 as a sorcerer with 100 plus HP. Roll your d20 ten times or more. How many times out of ten would your character have gotten to hit mine successfully? Unless an enemy is extremely lucky it should be unlikely that an enemy could hit my character every turn they get. And even if they do they would have to roll for damage which is only a single d6, d8, d10 or d12 plus a modifier at lower levels depending on your class. Again an enemy would have to have an extremely lucky roll to hit me every turn AND deal significant damage. During an in person DnD session that is just a bad night for my character. In a video game on casual mode that is significantly suspicious.
So what you might say. You've made and enjoyed the fanart, memes and etc. You got your $61 worth of playtime. So many other people were fine with the game, what is your problem?
I love video games. They blend so many artforms and tell stories in ways never done before. It is a medium unique to our current century and when historians look back they will view video games as an insight to our culture.
It frustrates me to no end that Baldur’s Gate 3 is considered the next gold standard. Too many games have done open world and RPGs in a fantasy setting far better for Larian (Swen Vincke) to have made the design and writing choices they did with BG3. There are so many podcasts and shows that have written better stories through the DnD format. I am embarrassed for the medium as an artist and frustrated as a player. Players and the industry deserve better than to have artists, actors, engineers etc. burn themselves out creating maximalist behemoths like this game. A game that is beautiful but basically unplayable, narratively, nihilistic and incoherent.

Okay like if you agree, but….
here are 3 trends that I wish the fantasy genre would take a break from for a little while.
*Quick disclosure, this isn’t meant to feel overly negative, I mostly want to hear other people’s opinions on these trends and others!*
Hungry Games-esque “a competition with deadly stakes” plot lines. On the one hand, I get it, because like the rest of the world, I was totally enthralled by this premise when it was first introduced in the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale and later, the Hunger Games. However, at this point the idea of the main character entering into a deadly competition feels a little tired and predictable, and unlike Battle Royale and The Hunger Games, the many of the latest iterations lack the searing social commentary which made the premise so compelling. Notable Examples: Serpent and the Wings of Night, Lightlark, The Jasad Heir
Motherfucking EPIGRAPHS. You know, that line or paragraph of text which proceeds every chapter. In the fantasy genre, often it is an except from a historical or religious text from the world in which the book is set. And here’s the thing—it’s not that I hate epigraphs, or that I don’t understand their purpose. They can be an elegant way to add context to the story without burdening the main narrative with too much exposition, and they can also help the created world to feel more “lived in”. Having said that, I feel like they are starting to get way overused, and for me, they’ve gone from feeling like a cool way for the author to provide context and add meta commentary to their story to serving as a slightly less clunky vehicle of info-dumping. Like…am I supposed to be remembering the characters of this lore which I only ever hear about through these epigraphs, because I can assure you, I am not. In other instances, they can feel like an authors lack of faith in the reader, as if they are afraid we might miss the point if they don’t include an unsubtle cue as to where we ought to focus our attention at the start of every chapter. I respect the role epigraphs have played in fantasy classics like Dune and Wheel of Time, but I currently feel the number of novels employing them has become fatiguing, and I hope the trend of including them decreases, at least in the short-term. Notable examples: Fourth Wing (Empyrean Series, Swordcatcher, Furyborn (Empirium series)
A [Blank] of [Blank] and [Blank] Not much to say here other than…when are romantasy authors going to let this go?? 😮‍💨😮‍💨 While you could argue the true genesis of this title naming convention could be GRRM’s A Song of Ice of Fire, I think we can all agree that—for better or worse—it was the popularity of ACOTAR that sent this title style into the stratosphere, and at this point, it has become ubiquitous to the point of literal disorientation. To me there is nothing inherently wrong with this title style (though I would also argue there is nothing particularly gripping about it, at least not enough to warrant a trend of this size) but it basically renders all of these books—which are already of a similar vibe and style—virtually indistinguishable. As a reader on the hunt for new books to scratch that romantasy itch, it’s nearly impossible to tell the dozens of titles bearing this title apart, which means I have no sense which which ones I’ve read, which I haven’t, which caught my interest, which I started and didn’t care for, etc. I have idea how much of this is a consequence of publishers trying to capitalize on a known entity in order to make the most money and how much is just the fact that naming a book is really fucking hard, but good lord, what is it gonna take to stop this madness? Notable examples: quite literally too many to name
What do yall think? Do you agree, disagree? What are some fantasy trends you’d like to see go away/make a comeback

Solarpunk Fiction and Conflict Pt. 2
Tumblr media
Let's continue to talk about conflict in Solarpunk fiction and stories we could easily tell there. You can find part 1 here.
The second category of conflict in Solarpunk fiction I see, is conflict with the environment. Something that can happen in a very literal way or the more... traditional way.
Let's talk about the traditional ways: Environmental Catastrophies and Survival Stories.
Human vs environment has always been a staple conflict in fiction and even though the Solarpunk movement is an environmental movement... Well, us being on the side of the environment does not mean that the environment is gonna be on our side, if you get my drift.
For one you can all Roland Emerich and tell a story of an Environmental Catastrophy. You can very well have a Solarpunk world, in which the current issues from climate change have not been fixed. So either you could have scientist just deal with trying to fix those issues... or you can tell stories about the climate catastrophies going on and about the people who try to survive it - or those trying to save the survivors. Again: You can go all Roland Emerich, but just have it in front of the backdrop of a Solarpunk world.
The other classic one can be a classical Survival Story. Look, even within a Solarpunk world people might get stuck in situations, where they gotta survive. Maybe they went out there into nature on their own volition because they are scientists and get lost. Maybe they live out there and a storm cuts them off. Or maybe it is a classical case of a ship or plane wrecking out in the wild. In fact, this could be a super interesting story to be told within a Solarpunk setting, given that a person, who grew up on Solarpunk values, might have different view points - and also different technological skills. (Also, look, SciFi survival stories are fun af!)
One less traditional kind of story to be told in a Solarpunk setting and that I would love to see, is what I am going to name Species Survivalism.
Let me let out my inner geek. Because maybe this is too science for even most Science Fiction nerds. But currently there are scientists all over the world battling to keep certain species important for the environment alive - or in fact reestablish a population. And while this would be really a geeky kind of story... It definitely could make for an interesting story. Trying to fix the world in a small way, after a Solarpunk Utopia has been established.
And then there is the last way. The Studio Ghibli way, if you want to.
See, often times Solarpunk is thought only as a SciFi genre, but technically speaking there is no law saying it cannot have fantasy elements. Especially given that one of the largest influence on the genre have been Studio Ghibli movies like Laputa and Princess Mononoke.
So lastly, for this type of conflict, I present you: Nature's Willing Revenge: Yes, sure, we have established a Solarpunk society, but we kinda messed up nature before we got there. Now the nature spirits/gods have reawakened and they are pissed. Will the protagonist have to fight them or try to establish some sort of peace with them?

Dimension hopping 1
Steve ran from the window, trying to find something to fight with. Fight with...? Was he really about to take on a dragon? He heard another roar outside and yep, it seemed that way. He found a sword, which was heavier than they looked in movies. Steve gave it a few practices swings and then went for his door.
The moment he opened it though, there was his mother. Dressed in clothes more fitting the current setting and not Hawkins at all.
“Thank the stars, you’re safe.”
“What’s going on? What the hell is happening?”, Steve asked, urgency rising in his voice.
“Get dressed”, she said. “That horrid beast was driven back for now but it’ll be back. Your father is going to choose a champion to do the deed.”
Steve felt like he only understood every other word she said. He had been in Hawkins, sleeping in his living room. This had to be some weird dream then. But it all felt too lucid to be that. He understood ‘get dressed’ though. Having some guy in the room helping him into the clothing was a little...new. But part of Steve was glad for it, otherwise he’d have to figure out this stuff for himself.
Once he was decent, he was guided to the throne room where his full title was announced and he took a seat next to his father. His mother was already on the other side. Steve scanned the room, trying to find other familiar faces. Anyone who knew the kind of world-bending crap they normally went through. This was definitely out of the normal bounds of Upside Down stuff, but what else could it be?
Steve missed what was being said and only snapped his attention back when he saw Eddie standing there, in literal shining armor. His name came out of Steve’s mouth in a whisper, but his dad must have heard it because he shot a glare his way. Even in a dream, those eyes kept him glued to his seat instead of running to his boyfriend like he wanted.
“Sir knight, you have done this kingdom a great service by running the dragon from our walls today”, the king praised.
“I cannot horde the glory”, Eddie said. “I am but one man. And it took many to do the deed.”
“But the deed is not yet done. Sir Edward, I beseech you to find this creature where he lay and slay it dead. Will you accept?”
“I accept, Your Majesty.”
Steve wanted to shout at them both. They were crazy for thinking Eddie could take on a dragon. He’d seen the size of that thing! Then Eddie did this odd, barely noticeable quirk with his fingers. He tapped his index finger on top of his middle twice.
“Meet me by training grounds.”
Steve didn’t know how he knew the meaning, but he did. When the court was dismissed, Steve was able to find his way there like he’d been roaming these castle walls his whole life. He was about to walk onto the empty pitch when a hand grabbed his arm and pulled him into a darkish corner. Then a mouth was on top of his.
“Eddie”, he tried to say between the kisses. “Eddie, is that really you?”
Eddie pulled back and looked into his eyes. “It’s me. Why are you asking? I know it’s kinda dark but-”
“Eddie what the hell is going on? Where are we?”
Concerned, Eddie looked him over. “Wait? Steve? Like actual Steve?”
“Is there any other?”
“Well shit. I thought this was-”
“A dream?”
“I have this one quite often”, Eddie admitted. “But if it isn’t a dream...then we’re actually here... Is this uh, normal for you guys.”
“No”, Steve said. “Never anything like this.”
Eddie took a step back, then began to pace in the small space around them. “You know what it is like? It’s like one of the movies we just watched.”
“So instead of falling into the Upside Down, we fell into a movie?”
“Makes about as much sense as anything else. Otherwise we’re both having a shared dream and isn’t that equally weird?”
Steve nodded. It was. “So what do we do?”
“You’re asking me?”, Eddie asked with a hand to his armored chest.
“You’re the fantasy nerd. You know how this all goes.”
“Well I know how I’d make it go in my world.” If this was one of his campaigns that is. “Slaying the dragon has gotta be the climax. And typically these kinds of things do have a forbidden romance going”, he waggled his eyebrows towards Steve.
“What does that mean?”
“It means, my liege, that you shouldn’t be seen getting intimate with someone of my status, lest we invite the wrath of your father.”
“Okay. So we’re going on what do you call them? A quest?”, Steve asked.
Eddie kissed him. “I’ve been waiting for you to say those words for so long.”
------------------------
The day Eddie was sent on his quest was met with fanfare. He was the storied knight of prophecy after all. The king and queen saw him off but the prince had fallen ill that morning and couldn’t be present.
Little did anyone know, after convincing his mother of being under the weather, Prince Stephen snuck out and joined Sir Edward on his own horse, ready to set off for the dragon’s keep.
“The journey won’t be an easy one, Your Highness. But oh the songs they’ll sing of us!”, Eddie exclaimed.
“You’re having fun with this, aren’t you?”
“I have no idea what you mean”, Eddie said as he took out a lute and began to strum it.

lyrics that only a tortured poet could write
(pt 2)
i am someone who until recent events you shared your secrets with // and your location, you forgot to turn it off // and so i watch as you walk
old habits die screaming
i move through the world with a heart broken // my longing state unspoken // and i may never open up the way i did for you
you said i needed a brave man // then proceeded to play him // until i believed it too
was it hazing for a cruel fraternity? // i pledged and i still mean it
now i wanna sell my house and set fire to all my clothes // and hire a priest to come and exorcise my demons // even if i die screaming // and i hope you hear it
i hear the whispers in your eyes // i'll make you wanna think twice // you'll find that you were never not mine
pick your poison, babe, i'm poison either way
even if it's handcuffed, i'm leavin' here with you
wise men once said // "wild winds are death to the candle"
cross your thoughtless heart // only liquor anoints you // she's the albatross // she is here to destroy you
wise men once said // "one bad seed kills the garden" // "one less temptress, one less dagger to sharpen" // locked me up in towers // but i'd visit in your dreams
and when that sky rains fire on you // and you're persona non grata // i'll tell you how i've been there too // and that none of it matters
wise men once read fake news // and they believed it
spread my wings like a parachute // i'm the albatross // i swept in at the rescue
if you wanna break my cold, cold heart // just say, "i loved you the way that you were"
i changed into goddesses, villains and fools // changed plans and lovers and outfits and rules
down that passage in time back to the moment // i crashed into you, like so many wrecks do // too impaired by my youth to know what to do
could it be enough to just float in your orbit? // can we watch our phantoms like watching wild horses?
we hereby conduct this post-mortem
and so a touch that was my birthright became foreign
come one, come all // it's happening again
we learn the right steps to different dances
lost the game of chance, what are the chances?
guess who we ran into at the shops? walking in circles like she was lost // didn't you hear? they called it all off // one gasp and then: how did it end?
say it once again with feeling // how the death rattle breathing // silenced as the soul was leaving // the deflation of our dreaming // leaving me bereft and reeling // my beloved ghost and me // sitting in a tree // D-Y-I-N-G
i can't pretend like i understand ... i still don't know // how did it end?
i feel so high school every time i look at you // i wanna find you in a crowd just to hide from you
i'll drink what you think and I'm high // from smokin' your jokes all damn night // the brink of a wrinkle in time // bittersweet sixteen suddenly
are you gonna marry, kiss or kill me? // it's just a game, but really // i'm bettin' on all three for us two
i hate it here so i will go to secret gardens in my mind // people need a key to get to, the only one is mine // i read about it in a book when i was a precocious child // no mid-sized city hopes and small-town fears // i'm there most of the year 'cause i hate it here
i hate it here so i will go to lunar valleys in my mind // when they found a better planet, only the gentle survived // i dreamed about it in the dark, the night I felt like i might die
i'm lonely, but i'm good // i'm bitter, but i swear i'm fine // i'll save all my romanticism for my inner life and i'll get lost on purpose // this place made me feel worthless // lucid dreams like electricity, the current flies through me // and in my fantasies, i rise above it
everyone knows that my mother is a saintly woman // but she used to say she wished that you were dead
i wrote a thousand songs that you find uncool // i built a legacy that you can't undo // but when i count the scars, there's a moment of truth // that there wouldn't be this if there hadn't been you
and maybe you've reframed it // and in your mind, you never beat my spirit black and blue // i don't think you've changed much
a feather taken by the wind blowing // i'm afflicted by the not knowing
i look in people's windows // transfixed by rose golden glows
does it feel alright to not know me? // i'm addicted to the "if only"
i guess a lesser woman would've lost hope // a greater woman wouldn't beg // but i looked to the sky and said please
cards on thе table // mine play out like fools in a fable // oh, it was sinking in // slow is the quicksand // poison blood from the wound of the pricked hand
and i sound like an infant // feeling like the very last drops of an ink pen // a greater woman stays cool // but i howl like a wolf at the moon // and i look unstable // gathered with a coven 'round a sorceress' table // a greater woman has faith // but even statues crumble if they're made to wait // i'm so afraid i sealed my fate // no sign of soulmates // i'm just a paperweight in shades of greige // spending my last coin so someone will tell me it'll be okay
when the first stone's thrown, there's screamin' // in the streets, there's a raging riot // when it's "burn the bitch," they're shrieking // when the truth comes out, it's quiet
i was in my tower weaving nightmares // twisting all my smiles into snarls // they say, "what doesn't kill you makes you aware" // what happens if it becomes who you are?
they knew, they knew, they knew the whole time // that i was onto somethin' // the family, the pure greed, the Christian chorus line // they all said nothin' // blood's thick, but nothin' like a payroll // bet they never spared a prayer for my soul // you can mark my words that i said it first // in a mourning warning, no one heard
said you were gonna grow up // then you were gonna come find me // words from the mouths of babes // promises oceans deep// but never to keep
are you still a mind reader? // a natural scene stealer? // i've heard great things, Peter // but life was always easier on you than it was on me
we both did the best we could do // underneath the same moon // in different galaxies
and i won't confess that i waited, but i let the lamp burn
love's never lost when perspective is earned
forgive me, Peter, please know that i tried // to hold onto the days when you were mine // but the woman who sits by the window has turned out the light
and i can confirm she made // a curious child, ever reviled // by everyone except her own father // with a quite bewitching face // splendidly selfish, charmingly helpless // excellent fun 'til you get to know her
but as she was leaving it felt like breathing ... as she was leaving it felt like freedom
all her fuckin' lives flashed before her eyes // it feels like the time she fell through the ice then came out alive
and at first blush, this is fate // when it's all roses, portrait pose // Central Park Lake in tiny rowboats // what a charming Saturday // that's when she sees the littlest leaks down in the floorboards // and she just knows she must bolt
buried down deep // and out of your reach // the secret we all vowed // to keep it from you in sweetness
you got the dragonflies above your bed // you have a favorite spot on the swing set // you have no room in your dreams for regrets // (you have no idea) // the time will arrive for the cruel and the mean // you'll learn to bounce back just like your trampoline // but now we'll curtail your curiosity
i'm not a donor but i'd give you my heart if you needed it
and the years passed like scenes of a show // the professor said to write what you know // lookin' backwards might be the only way to move forward // then the actors were hitting their marks // and the slow dance was alight with the sparks // and the tears fell // in synchronicity with the score // and at last // she knew what the agony had been for
now and then i reread the manuscript // but the story isn't mine anymore

OC Questionnaire
Thank you so much for the tag, @willtheweaver!!! (here)
MY QUESTIONS WERE:
Is there anything that would make you lose trust in others?
Do you think anyone could love you?
If you could relive one day, which one would it be?
YOUR QUESTIONS ARE:
Where is your favorite place in the world?
What food do you hate the most?
Do you like watching sunsets or sunrises?
The characters answering will be Corah and Scarlet from Of Starlight and Beasts, Renn from my still-unnamed fairytale fantasy WIP, and Sam Delaways from Enchanted Illusions!
1. Is there anything that would make you lose trust in others?
Corah - Betrayal, abandonment and dishonesty are pretty far up on the list, along with unwarranted cruelty, people who like to make others feel uncomfortable, or those with a just generally jerkass attitude.
Scarlet - Finding out that person works for the King, or is too buddy-buddy with the constabulary in the city usually sets off all of my alarms all at once. I also cannot stand cowards, liars and people who cannot be trusted to hide a secret.
Renn - Hmm. I guess that being lied to or used by someone tends to be what breaks the deal, but I also lose trust in people who are too indecisive, or whom I know would choose the set laws and rules over the wellbeing of individuals.
Sam - Trust is important, alright, but it ain't more important than staying safe. I tend to give people a lot of chances before fully losing all trust in 'em. I think what would make me lose trust really fast is finding out someone is sadistic or cruel to innocent people, or discovering someone I trusted had intentionally hid something important from me.
2. Do you think anyone could love you?
Corah - ... I sure hope so? Haha. Asking the hard hitting questions, are we now? But on a serious note, I think that almost anyone who is good - or willing to become good through effort - deserves love. I strive to be a good person and help others whenever I can - I just hope this is enough...
Scarlet - Yes, absolutely! I am a delight to be around. I think. I have lots of friends, and my sister and I have a really close bond. The love for one's family is one of the most special ties in the world, and I wouldn't ask for anything more.
Renn - I think so, if they ever get to know me beyond what the rumors and scare stories of the villagers will have you believe. Most don't. I don't really care - but some days I just wish more people gave me a chance.
Sam - Yep. I have two little brothers who say that I'm their hero! While in my opinion that is very flattering on its own, I'm very thankful to have them both in my life, despite most things not going as planned. Don't know what I would do without 'em.
3. If you could relive one day, which one would it be?
Corah - The day I met Arammys. I know its two days before my whole life was thrown upside down, but that day was perfect. Not only was it the day I met my closest friend, and current boyfriend, but everything was so perfectly normal - almost like everything was going to go exactly as I expected. Turns out they didn't, but that's not the point.
Scarlet - The day I taught Nimwen how to shoot the bow and arrow, and I stole a cherry cake from a shop in town that lasted us two whole days. That was a pretty great day given our standards. I'd love to relive it.
Renn - Hmm. The days before my Dad went on the voyage that got him killed. Before I had to figure out how to survive alone away from our land and villagers with torches and pitchforks became the biggest threat to my way of life. We were happy, and I was just a little kid having the time of my life with a parent cared about me. That was great! Or used to be.
Sam - I dunno. Days are all pretty similar in Strystead - an endless grind of work, survival and learning to stay out of trouble. My happiest moments are the ones where I get to just spend free time with my little brothers without having to work myself to the bone in the factories. Those days are rare though, and will likely keep getting rarer - because the Mayor sure ain't about to pay working folk a proper salary, but that's a whole other issue.

Ask bomb
Are there any specific technologies or concepts from sci-fi books that you wish existed in the real world?
Do you consider yourself to be a picky eater?
You are given a choice to live in one of the fictional worlds where your games are set in. Which one would you choose and why?
If you were given a budget of 5000$ to upgrade your current house of tech setup, how would you spend it?
What's the most unusual item on your bedside table?
Have you read any of the IF works in chooseyourstory.com? While the forum is filled with unsavory characters, the quality of some of the works is better than most IFs found throughout the community as a whole
What's your favorite conspiracy theory, even if you don't believe it?
If you could have a conversation with your pet and they could understand you for just one minute, what would you say?
If you had a warning label, what would it say?
If aliens visited Earth and you were the first human they encountered, how would you explain our species?
What's the weirdest piece of advice you've ever received that turned out to be surprisingly useful?
What's the most absurd thing you've ever bought on impulse?
If you could have any mythical creature as a pet, which one would you choose and what would you name it?
As a french what are your thoughts on croak shoes and dad hats?
What's your favorite French expression or saying that you think the rest of the world needs to adopt?
If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance of winning a gold medal in?
😱
omg Anon...
Alright let's see
Teleportation. I hate the getting to places part of travelling. But also... Would it even work? Paris 2119 kinda gave me the ick about it at the same time.
I don't think I am. I'll eat almost anything and try new stuff when I can.
Any of the slice-of-life/like-the-real-world setting. Space is cool but it's too dangerous. Fantasy worlds don't have vaccines and medicine. It's like time travel: go in the past and you'll die of whatever disease is there, or in the future and maybe kill everyone with your bacteria (or was it the other way around? either way...). I'd rather live in a "normal" setting.
Half into a bed and mattress - the one you can bend up to read better. The rest in books and comics. If you give me the 5k in three years, I'll spend it in a gaming computer.
More unused bookmarks than books (I just have books on my bedside table).
I checked out the top rated listing on the main page a while back. Not my thing.
The Dead Internet Theory: the internet died some while back and is just populated by bots only. So we don't interact with people directly but through bots. It's a bit cuckoo. Or Nessie.
I've been told plants and rocks don't count as pets...
Volume not adjustable.
Don't bother, we're unsalvageable.
Touch grass. (go outside, take a walk, breath some fresh air)
Didn't buy, but I keep getting gifted croissant-related things: socks, kitchen towel... and more recently: the plushie. It is amazing. I love it.
The head of Mímir. I think we'd be drinking buddies. Especially if he is like in God of War.
Eh... Let people wear whatever they want.
« Quand le vin est tiré, il faut le boire. » - When the wine is drawn, you must drink it. Or finish your shit.
I am so average at shit, even then I wouldn't win any gold medal. And that's fine :)

✨Greetings!✨ I am a 25+ year old NB searching Tumblr for some long-term 23+ Discord rp partners for MxM OcxOc!! I'll try to make this brief with what my ideal partner would be! I am in EST, but I don't care what timezone you are in.
• One who is open to many different types of plots/settings and not scared of potential dark themes/explicit topics/gore/toxic themes. I want more story-driven rps rather than pure smut. My guys are switches and power (dom) bottoms. I do not write as or against submissive/uwu characters. I expect you to put in equal effort. I will not be driving a one-man ship here. If you do not want smut at all, I'm open to platonic relationships, too! No judgment here.
• If you are someone who does not enjoy in-depth storytelling, character development, plotting, gushing over OC's, dynamics of our OC's, playlists, Pinterest Boards, etc, then we will not be a good match. I need someone to match my enthusiasm. I need a communicative and active rp partner. I'd love to be able to ooc chatter about our guys and story! I personally will respond at least once a day to the rp unless I say otherwise. I'd love if you could respond at least once a week to the rp to keep the momentum going! I would love to have someone who is invested as much as I am.
• Please be literate and multi-para/up to novella (when/if the scene calls for that length)! 3rd person, past tense. Still, quality>quantity. Proper grammar and punctuation are a must. Minimum for replies will be 3 full paragraphs, unless otherwise appropriate.
• I do not write against OC's who have children. It's just not my cup of tea. Siblings are fine, as long as they're old enough to interact with the world and actually contribute something.
• My trigger is m-preg/pregnancy, in general. I do have a few NSFW squicks I will share in private. Feel free to ask about anything else! Open to most taboo topics.
• I expect you to multi-muse alongside me to keep the plot moving with a fleshed-out world!
• I do have some rough plot ideas in mind, or we can come up with something on our own together. You are free to reject any of my ideas, as I am free to reject any of yours.
• I am not a fan of historical rp's, space sci-fi, or anything super high fantasy. I have OCs that fit modern settings, dark fantasy/supernatural settings, and cyberpunk settings. Possibly a few in apocalyptic environments? (Not a fan of the zombie apocalypse though) Again, if you only stick to one setting, we will not be a good match.
• Some Tropes I like: Slow Burns, Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Enemies to Lovers, Friends w/Benefits, Friends to Lovers, Power Dynamics, Together With A Former/Current Antagonist, Living with the Villain, Supernatural Being And Their Favorite Human, Battle Couple, Nobody Thinks It Will Work...Etc.
• I use RL faceclaims and manga/anime style ones. Any race/ethnicities are welcome!
• Poly/Throuples are also welcome, if you want that! We can split the other guy(s) together, so things are even!
Also open to AU's if we have a pair(s) that really vibe together! :)
I am available to use Tupperbox, but that is not a requirement with me! We can write together whether you want to use it or not. I will adapt to what that preference is.
If you think we'd be a good fit, give this a like, and I'll reach out! We shall chit-chat via Tumblr Dms to ensure we match before I create a server for us! I can add any channels you want, along with the ones I add by default!
give a like and anon will get back to you

I have a fantasy currently about making a deal with the devil to gain something in exchange for gaining weight.
For example, making a deal to become the best guitar player in the world. I could go from little skill to master abilities, but only if I gain weight. Every pound gained means better ability playing the guitar. The devil says I can stop at any time, there's no end weight I need to reach. But if I lose weight, I will also lose a proportionate amount of ability.
So of course I don't want to lose weight, I just tell myself that I will gain enough weight to get good enough to fulfill my desires. The devil knows of course that once I get a taste of success and skill, I will want more. And there's a clear way to continue: eat. Gain weight. Instead of practicing more, I eat more. My bandmates at first wonder why I'm not practicing more, and are slightly worried about how much weight I'm gaining, but since I'm playing better than ever before, they learn to ignore it pretty quickly.
The band has more and more success the more I eat and gain weight, we have am expanding fanbase to go with my expanding waistline. I and my bandmates worry at first that my new weight will scare of fans and ruin our image, but most fans not only don't seem to care, but a lot of them think it's sexy. Fans start to send me gifts and cakes or will deliver huge meals to the stage door. I wonder if the devil set this up to, but I'm not bothered even if they did. I'm an excellent guitarist in a respected and beloved band.
My bandmates see how much attention I'm getting and decide to gain weight too to match my image. It's a lot easier for me to keep eating with company, and when everyone else makes sure there's food around as well.

💥 writeblr intro 💥
hiii folks, this is gonna be my writeblr (hopefully we’ll see how motivated i am) so i want to do a little intro!!
about me
you can call me layne, or if u want to call me icarus, that works too
queer
they/them
disabled with like a million chronic illnesses
21 yrs old
i’m a college dropout with absolutely no plan ahaha
i work as a barista and am looking for music gigs on the side (i still need to get better at the music part oops)
currently reading: Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
about my writing
i write mostly fiction/sci-fi/fantasy
almost all of my characters have powers or magic or aren’t even completely human
i like to write really cool fight scenes, i don’t care if they seem unreasonable, pretend it’s an anime idk. they have superpowers they can do anything
i like to explore the darker elements of these powers and worlds, so a lot of my work is nsfw bc of gore and stuff like that
like incorporating horror into my stories as well as just writing horror too
i write diverse characters and do the best research i can; if someone notices i’ve made a mistake or have accidentally written something insensitive, please let me know! i am always learning!
if i could draw i would make all of my works graphic novels as my choice of media, but alas, i am incapable of doing much more than staring at my tablet and getting angry when the picture doesn’t draw itself
my wips:
Generation Six
sci-fi, superpowers
a woman spends her entire life recruiting people known as Guardians to help protect the world from danger, but the biggest threat she’s ever faced is about to upend it all. not to mention the evil little shadow demon that lives in her head is constantly trying to overtake her and go on a murderous rampage. she’s a bit busy.
large cast, multiple povs
this series is on the back burner for now, i just am not sure where i want to go with it
an untitled pirate story
fantasy, magic gay pirates
the most feared pirates in the world is a crew of six people… and a magic cat? the captain is searching for the greatest treasure known to humankind, and she’d probably have it already, if they didn’t keep hitting all these roadblocks. seablocks? they’re on a boat.
small main cast
Murders of Crow Creek
western setting with supernatural/paranormal elements
a small town sheriff recruits an interesting group of people to help her solve a string of murders: a witch of the Dark Gods, a bounty hunter with a memory problem, a demon killer with a smoking problem, and a bartender with one arm and a hell of a lot of knives tucked in his boots. what’s the worst that could happen? ignore the all out war between gods that they accidentally get themselves into
small main cast
there’s ghosts, demons, angels, vampires, all sorts of supernatural beings just chillin in the wild west
personally love this one bc the main character, the sheriff, is just getting too old for this nonsense; she’s also a big time lesbian yeehaw
Kid Mother
sci-fi, post-apocalyptic
a disease has wiped out nearly the entire human population. if things weren’t already bad, this disease made it so that babies just. couldn’t be born. until one is. with the human population dwindling, and groups trying to speed up that process, our main character has to travel across the country with the first baby that’s been born in two decades so that scientists may be able to find a way to fix this entire thing. no problem.
very small cast
us vs the world trope
other info
i love answering literally any questions about my wips so pleeeeeaaaase ask away!!
i’ll probably also post any fanfics i write bc i have a lot of them, and i really need somewhere to share them oopsies
any advice about other places i can share my writing would be appreciated
please refrain from giving criticism unless it’s 1. constructive and 2. something i asked for :) sometimes i just Can Not Handle It
i do not tolerate any form of bigotry. if i see any clownery on any of my stuff, you will be blocked and reported. just don’t be an ass.
uhhh i think that’s about it? not sure what else to put in a writeblr intro, so if you made it this far, thank you so much! hopefully i will have more detailed posts about those wips up at some point before the year ends! follow if your interested, i’ll probs follow back :)

15 Questions from Mutuals
@withlovefromayre tagged me and although I feel awkward singling anyone else out to tag, I’m happy to answer these questions. Ramble incoming!
Are you named after anyone? This is very embarrassing, but in 2014 I changed my name to one of the regions of a world where a then-favourite game site was set. Five years later, when I couldn’t take the high-tension, high-drama events that site did at least twice a year or the way the site’s staff encouraged the greedy, heartless attitude of most of the other community members, I turned my back on the fandom and have regretted picking that particular name ever since. Either way, I just couldn’t live with my birth name any longer - that never felt like me, to put it mildly.
When was the last time you cried? Last week, when I had two major emotional crises in two days. Sometimes I feel so out of place on 21st century Earth that I want to sue the universe for misincarnation or something.
The second time it happened last week, my mum took me for a walk round the park across the street to help me calm down. Nothing could lift me out of the depths of despair though - until we were nearly home and she picked a dandelion and gave it to me to blow the seeds off. Getting to be a kid again for a couple of seconds helped me to smile again, and pulled me back from the brink. I’m going to buy myself a piece of jewellery with a dandelion on it, so I can remember how much it helped me.
Do you have kids? No, I acknowledge that I’m not cut out to be a parent or a partner. I do consider all nine generations of sims I’ve raised so far to be my babies, though.
Do you use sarcasm a lot? Sometimes, when I’m with someone I know won’t take it personally, like my mum. If I’m being completely honest, I can dish it out but I can’t take it.
What sports do you play/have you played? Truth be told, I’m a couch potato. Sixteen years of depression can do that to a person, though I am trying to get more active and healthy. However, I was very active as a child and I did once win a skipping rope race at my primary school sports day.
What is the first thing you notice about other people? Whether I feel comfortable around them or not. I’m autistic and I find it difficult meeting new people, but there are some people - including my regular support workers - who I’ve clicked with almost instantly. Others, I just get... spiky vibes or something from them.
Scary movies or happy endings? Definitely happy endings. I love musicals and Disney movies - and whatever I watch, it always helps for me to have a box of tissues handy.
Any special talents? I’ve been told I’m very insightful. I’m good at language creation, wordplay, worldbuilding and writing, with a particular flair for comic verse. I can also create and edit mods for Sims 2. One day I’d like to publish fantasy novels for children and young adults who might be going through rough times, to offer comfort and escapism and not hit too close to home by setting them in our world.
Where were you born? Whipps Cross Hospital in Walthamstowe, London. Apparently David Beckham was also born there. *shrugs* Whatever.
What are your hobbies? Mostly it’s Sims 2, reading about and creating various fantasy worlds, solo roleplaying, Plants vs. Zombies 2, and my mum and I are currently hyperfixating on another game app, Two Dots, which I discovered by accident. I also love being out in nature and have planted some wildflower seeds around the park near my home.
Do you have any pets? At the time of writing, I have an aquarium with six fish - one male and three female platies, one rummy nose tetra and one silvertip tetra who is easily the boss of the aquarium - and there’s an indeterminate number of amano shrimp in there too. It’s been nearly 18 months since we had to say goodbye to our elderly dog, Charlie, and I still miss him, it doesn’t feel right without a clueless lump of fur around.
How tall are you? 5′4″.
Fave subject in school? School was a living nightmare for me, but I did enjoy writing and art. I used to cry myself to sleep on nights before geography lessons though, because although I love learning about other cultures, I couldn’t bear hearing about wars and natural disasters.
Eye Colour: Dark brown.

Hellooooo hi, I'm too lazy to scroll yeah
Can you tell me a bit about your paracosm? :3
A bit? Nope, sorry, no can do, I can only tell you a metric fuck TON about my paracosm. Hope ur prepared for an infodump >:)
Sooooo uh. There’s a lot to talk abt (because I don’t know how to shut up) so let me break it up a little. Setting-wise, the story’s set in a fantasy version of Earth, where the most important difference (aside from the presence of magic) is that if someone writes a story and enough people read it, the story becomes real in a parallel dimension. I originally thought of this as a way to explain how my OCs could meet with the characters from my favorite shows/books, nowadays it’s both a mechanic that facilitates the story and (recently more frequently) the focus and source of conflict.
Because of the setting, aside from the numerous stolen characters from other media and reworked versions of said stolen characters, there’s obviously a lot of magic going around with a fuckton of places to visit and even more magical species to populate the world and wield said magic – “angels”, demons, shapeshifters, monsters, gods, you name it. Most of my paras are non-human and those who are also tend to have non-human ancestry or some kind of extra magical power (what’s the point of fantasy without fantasy, yknow?). But also, because I have a weird obsession with Organizing and Putting Things In Boxes, I have the physics of magic worked out to an absurd detail, feel free to shoot me an ask abt it if you want to be bored to death :D
Plot-wise… well. I would summarize the story, I actually HAVE a pretty decent summary, but it’s like, 100+ pages (50k+ words if I recall correctly), and I’m pretty sure tumblr would not Like That (and this version’s not even up to date), so. There used to be a lot of exploration of the world (aka me integrating my current interests into my paracosm because I can), nowadays it’s a lot more character-focused, with the plot revolving around 15-ish “main” paras and their lives. Which can be anything from “I can finally go to college and study the stuff I wanna study! Yay!” to “oh god oh fuck I’m a general in a multidimensional war and thousands are dead if I make the wrong move” so. There’s a lot of throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks. (I am a sucker for big epic fights tho so that happens a lot lol)
Thematically, I like to focus on the inner worlds of my paras and how they relate to the world around them. Each of them come from different backgrounds with different perspectives so any time I wanna explore a concept I can just pick whoever falls closest to that (like, “oh THIS one was abandoned by their family but THIS one is a stable father figure, found family trope go brrr” just to name an example). There’s a lot of hurt/comfort generally speaking, heavy on the emotional angst and, because I’m a secret whump enjoyer, there also tends to be a lot of blood. Like a lot. (Dw I always balance it out with some old-fashioned “finding peace in each other’s presence” daydreams, especially soft and cuddly.) Oh yeah and also everyone’s gay but that’s pretty much expected at this point.
Sometimes I also like to wonder about the morality of certain aspects of this universe, since the setting and world is so different from ours, but ig that’s a topic for another day haha
Anyway yeah that’s as short as I could get it 😅 it’s a bit hard to talk about my paracosm as a whole because it’s so old and as a result incredibly widespread. I do have a sideblog dedicated to it but tbh I haven’t really touched it in ages so what little info it has is probably outdated. Idk what else to say, if there’s any part you’d want me to go into greater detail feel free to ask (I know ppl mostly only care about the paras which, fair, but when it comes to talking abt my paracosm practically any topic is free for the asking lol), and sorry for the long ramble haha
Bonus doodle of one of my paras (Rowena) I did like a day ago

Thoughts On Summer Reading
Tumblr media
As someone who's on social media—specifically the book part of Instagram—a fair amount, I hear a lot about how different people read. Some read the next book they plan to read, have five more books lined up after that, and for the most part they'll get them read in that order. Others read whatever strikes their fancy whenever it strikes their fancy. I am a mood reader at heart, but one who wedges in that library book that she's had checked out for months which she DID really want to read at the time so now she better stop in the middle of her other six current reads to rush through it in time to return it tomorrow... which is exactly what I'm going to resume doing once I finish this blog post. So maybe I'm a mood reader with "obligatory books" hanging over her head.
Part of being a mood reader is the fluctuation of what I want to read each season. For the fall, witchy books like The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, Spells for Forgetting, Wild Is the Witch, and The League of Gentlewomen Witches. In the winter it was mostly science fiction by Becky Chambers. But the most talked about season in the reading community has to be summer. Summer reads, beach reads, vacation reads. Light books that you fall into and out of like a summer fling. This fits the traditional idea of summer reads that we all know and love, but the genres included in summer reading lists have expanded over the past few years. We at Island Books put together a shelf full of summer books for every reader, surrounded by sticky notes with suns and right next to our Staff Picks shelf.
Tumblr media
Last summer, all I read was romance. Intense feelings crammed into a book I could read in a day. The happy ending, the guarantee of peace and satisfaction. I picked up several fantasy books and put them down again immediately—any effort to learn about a made-up world felt like too much. This summer, rather than a specific genre, I've been catching up on my backlog. I finished the Anne of Green Gables series for the first time and found it delightful. I listened to The City of Brass and all of its sequels while traveling. I read the first two books of The Borrowers, finished the Seafire trilogy, and sped through books two and three of The Thursday Murder Club. I finally pulled out my two-year-old copy of Red, White & Royal Blue and devoured it in twenty-four hours (just in time for the release of the movie on August 11).  Although it's a completely different path than I took last summer, it's been so fun to discover these books for the first time and then discuss them with everyone who already loves them. I look forward to seeing where my mood reading takes me next summer.
Things that make a good summer read (one list does not fit all):
Not too heavy (physically); needs to be light enough to bring on vacation
Not too heavy (content-wise); needs to be light enough to read on a beach
Characters that draw you in
A plot that grips you
Romance
Intense action
...And the list goes on and on.
Bonus points for reading a book that's set on a beach...on a beach. The perfect summer read is so varied from person to person that the most important criteria is to pick up a book that interests you. I look forward to hearing about what you loved as we talk books over the counter.

I Swear P2
Tumblr media
Media IRL X high Fantasy
Character Thomas Brodie Sangster
Couple Thomas X Reader
Rating Dark + Smut
Concept the storytellers curse
Smut: Non consensual / Restrained / Groping / Fondling / Spanking
I was still unable to move, no matter what I tried I couldn’t do anything at all many staff had tried to help me but nothing ever worked. And honestly, all my attempts did was trie me and unfortunately amuse him.
“Humm you are a very cute little decoration princess” he smirked “But you’d look prettier if you smiled”
“Why would I smile? When I am being held, prisoner!”
“By yourself. I have no control over your reminisce on the floor, only you do.” He smirked having a drink “You have only yourself to blame.”
“You're enjoying this. Aren't you?”
“I cannot deny, the fact that the sweet little princess is stuck rather permanently to my throne room floor does… amuse me greatly”
“The rumours were true. You're as Vile as your father”
“As vile as my father?” he smirked
“I could be… far far worse princess.” he smirked “You’re currently utterly restrained on my floor. I could strip you off your sweet dress and force you to sit there naked. I could pour oil and set your body alight. I could have you used as a whore for my men and any others in the castle who want to fuck a princess.” He smirked “I could do many things. I think I’ve been quite merciful.”
“What are you going to do to me?”
“Well. you are to remain here until you tell the truth. I’m sure I can think of some… appropriate punishment princess” he smirked coming down from his throne “Leave us” he ordered his guards and they quickly emptied the room leaving us alone He passed around me smirking hard “You're a very beautiful princess”
“Am I” I sighed
“You are. Pray tell is the little princess still…”
“Still what?”
“A Blooming flower?”
“You pervert!” “Merely asking princess”
“Yes” I sighed
“Humm rumours were otherwise”
“Well rumours are merely rumours”
“Good.”
“Yourself”
“The answer may surprise you”
“I doubt it”
“Yes”
“What?” I asked admittedly surprised
“Still a flower. Not yet found my queen”
“She doesn’t need to be your queen for that”
“She does. In my mind.”
“You have an older mind”
“I was raised very sheltered. Barely let the spier. Not surprising my views are more…”
“You were for the bond then?”
“I was. Thought it best for our people avoid any more troubles”
“You treat the war as troubles”
“I do. But they're over now. We should move forward.” He says “I’m sure I need not to tell you of the intentions. Many believe in this time of peace the kingdoms should join as a sign of peaceful times and future thinking, and of course to prevent more… troubles. I believe it too would be beneficial. To join our kingdoms. You and I.”
“I do not”
“I see. Likely the reason for your entrapment. Well you're not going anywhere” he smirked stroking my jaw “I’m sure I have ample time to… convince you, princess”
“Or perhaps I have time to convince you”
“Strong-headed. Aren't you?”
“Once has to be. In this world”
“You are to make a spectacular queen” he smirked “But for now Just my pretty decoration. And perhaps in a few days… I’ll find more uses for you” he smirked his hand slipping down to cup my breast I tried to fight but given I was unable to move I had little fight to put up He cupped my breast gently in his hand squeezing me with his slender fingers, he gasped before holding his breath tightly his eyes squarely on my dress and his hand a groan in the back of his throat. “I’m sure I have many uses for you” He smirked before he moved back and headed out to do something else.
I remained still on the throne room floor unable to move the room around me pitch black with only a slight firelight glow from the windows I tried to rest even if I found it hard given my position. I jumped hearing the door opened behind me unable to turn and see who it was, light flooding in until a candle was set beside me.
"Good evening princess" he smirked
"Evening your grace"
"Just Thomas is fine princess" he smiled as I headed him sit on the stone behind me
“What are you doing here?”
“I couldn’t sleep. Figured I’d… come check on you”
“I’m fine. Thank you”
“Good, I was worried about you in here… all alone”
“I’m fine”
“I’m sure you are.”
“You can go back to bed now”
“I could. But, I think I’ll stay here for a little while” he smirked moving closer to me so much I could hear a growl in his voice his breath on my ear “I can’t stop thinking about you” he groans his hands quickly emerging from the darkness both taking a frim grip on my breasts pulling them unto my body squeezing them with his slender fingers He gasped the moment his hands touched me slightly shaking as he did, “fuck” He gasped under his breath “I’m sorry, Princess- you just… your so beautiful. And these Ummmm I- Ive never touched anyone like this before. I can’t help myself.” he groans as his little squeezes became more aggressive Now fully squeezing me, what began as soft tender experimenting became lustful passion, now beginning to fondle moving the weight of me in his hands all the while whining and muttering in lust behind me “They feel so good.” he groans kissing my neck in an attempt to silence himself
“Leave me alone you perv!” I complained
“Umm why should I princess? After all you are stuck her so… innocently on you knees you can’t blame a boy for taking advantage”
“Yes I can!”
“Uhh! Just let me have my fun.” He groans
“Go fuck one of your whores”
“I will. I was thinking the one trapped to my floor” he smirked moving his hands away but only to move back and tug up my dress exposing my undergraments
“Leave me alone!”
“When I’m done with you” he smirked fodling my ass stroking it and squeezing it like he had to my breasts “Uhh! Fuck. you are perfect.” he smirked slapping my ass hard
“Oww!”
“Quiet. Don’t want someone to find you like this princess” he smirked “what ever will your father think” he smirked moving one hand away to return to my breasts “when the news breaks his sweet innocent little princess was found… humm exposing herself in a dark magic ritual with the king of Morana. You’d never live that down would you princess” he smirked getting more intense “You’d be cast out, shamed, likely have to come back here on your hands and knees begging me to give you a bed for the night” he smirked “I’d obliged of course princess, being the kind king I am” he smirked now gently playing with the nipple on my breast that poked through my dress from his fondling which only made him smirk more giving me kisses and hikis as he spoke “I’d give a bed to the poor little shammed princess…. Hmmm for a price” He growled slipping his hand under my dress taking a grip of my bare breast “Uuhhh,” He moans in my ear
“Your grace!” Voices began to shout across the castle
He groaned moving away putting my dress back down “Looks like they found me out of my room” he sighed “Thats enough for one night then. Be a good girl princess. I’ll be back tomorow night” he smirked giving my cheek a kiss before taking his candle and hurrying off out the throne room.

I don’t really do New Year’s resolutions, but I have been already working towards this, so I’ll offer it up anyway: I’m trying to read more. As a kid I read almost constantly. And then I started high school and college and I didn’t have the time or energy, and got out of the habit.
But in the last couple of months, I’ve been reading more. In my current job, which I only get to work about every other weekend anyway, I sometimes have twenty or so minute of down time at a time, often multiple times a day, between calls and tours, and it’s not retail so nobody minds if I’m reading my book since I’m also fully getting my work done. So I can put books on hold online at the library, and then when they’re ready, stop by and pick them up in the morning on my way to work.
And it’s been incredible. Because I love reading. Not even just the stories themselves, and I admittedly don’t do a lot of deep analysis of themes or anything like that while I read, because I just so enjoy even the act of reading, diving into a whole new world and losing myself in it a little bit.
I’m a very quick reader and as a kid I would bike to the library with my sister and we would come home with a dozen books each, almost more than we could stand to carry in our backpacks, and then we’d go back the next week. I am quite sure that there are more books that I read in their entirety and remember absolutely no details from at all, totally and completely wiped from my mind as if they never existed, than many people have read ever. And I loved it. When my mom put her foot down and said we could only bring home eight books each, I would decide between books based on how big they were.
I’m more selective now, but I’m still a quick reader. When I pick up a book in the morning and bring it to work I almost always finish it that day. And I’ve read so many good books! I finished Becky Chambers’ Wayfarers series. I read a couple of Dara Horn novels that I really enjoyed. I absolutely devoured Mary Robinette Kowal’s Lady Astronaut books (and then received the full set for my birthday a couple of weeks ago, because I loved them so much I had to have my own). I’m two books into Rebecca Roanhorse’s Between Earth and Sky trilogy, which is fascinating, and does have such an interesting and different flavor from a lot of European fantasy that I’m sure a reader more interested in analysis than I am would be able to pin down in better words but which I’m just enjoying the ride with.
I can’t tell you how good it feels to be reading again. It’s like a return to my old self. Like coming home. So my New Year’s resolution, of sorts, is to continue that. I considered trying to say I’d read a book every week, but that’s a little too concrete for not liking resolutions, and also if I get a full time job, which I sure would like to do, and my routine changes, it’ll be harder to keep to a schedule, and it will feel more like work, which of course is not what I want.
But maybe I’ll try to keep up a list for tumblr or something. Not like reviews or anything, probably, because trying to think about talking to other people about aspects of a book takes me out of the experience (yeah, I did occasionally struggle in high school English classes, lol. I would get so caught up in reading the books that I would forget to think about discussion questions or whatever. But boy did I like reading all those books!), so, not a good resource for my newfound handful of followers, unless your criteria for book recommendations is “a tumblr user mentioned the name of it once,” but something. Not holding myself accountable exactly because again who cares about resolutions, but like, a dedicated place to share what I’m up to in that realm and keep the momentum of the enjoyment up a little bit, if that makes sense.
TL;DR, Happy New Year? ❤️
