A Most Unusual Unit
Good morning, or rather, good evening, "Nightshade". Excellent work on your last assignment. Thanks your efforts, the councilman has lived to see another day, much to the great benefit of Vale. Unfortunately, I'm afraid I have another assignment for you already. Your new target is the leader of the Spiders organization, "Little Miss" Charlotte Malachite. She is a grave threat to peace between Vale and Mistral. Your mission is to get close to her and gain any information that may be related to seditious activities.
In order to do this, you will have to marry and have a child.
Blake: (Spits out her coffee, Coughs) EXCUSE ME?!
Little Miss is a reclusive woman and is notably suspicious of others. At this point, she operates almost entirely behind the scenes. Her only public appearances of late have been her attendance at the elite private school her daughters attend. These events act as informal get-togethers for the upper crust of society and the lowest of low in the criminal underworld. You are to enroll your child at this school and gain entry to these events. However, admission deadlines are approaching fast. YOU'VE ONLY GOT ONE WEEK.
Blake: (Rips encoded-cypher paper in half) THEY EXPECT ME TO HAVE A CHILD IN SEVEN DAYS?! (People stare at her, Ahem!) Excuse me...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Blake: Listen up, little girl.
Penny: I'm Penny!
Blake: Listen up, Penny. From now on, you are my child. As far as everyone knows, however, you have always been my child. Understood?
Penny: Understood!
Blake: You will address me as "Mother," as the elites do.
Penny: Mama!
Blake: Very well.
Old Woman: What an adorable girl~.
Blake: Thank you. We're the Belladinas. We just moved in.
Penny: I'm Penny, and I have always been Mama's child!
Old Woman: Huh?
Blake: (Thinking) You don't need to say that!.
Penny: Mama, I want a silenced pistol~!
Blake: If we see one on sale.
Old Woman: What a strange family...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jaune: (Answers phone) Hello, Arc residence.
Jaune: Oh, Saph!
Saphron: (Via phone) How are you doing, baby bro?.
Jaune: Good. Everything's good. I'm still hard at work in Vale!
Saphron: Still as weird as ever. Don't make me worry about you.
Jaune: You don't have to sound so mean about it! And I am not weird!
Saphron: Jaune, when are you going to get married? You find a good lady friend yet?
Jaune: (Thinking) Not this again...
Saphron: Listen, I might be offered a big promotion here soon, but that'd mean I'd be too busy to look after you. I'm not gonna say no right off the bat, but it doesn't feel right for me to abandon you in the big city. Like I always tell ya, I'm forever grateful for you taking care of me all this time, and that's why I want to make sure you're happy.
Jaune: I know, Saph. Thank you.
Saphron: I think I know some cuties out here in Argus. Maybe I could put in a good word for you?
Jaune: Ah! N-No! You don't need to do that! A-Actually, I'm heading to a party this weekend... and I'll be bringing someone!
Saphron: A girl?!
Jaune: Uh, y-yeah, I guess that's one way to describe her. So don't worry about me, okay?
Saphron: Alright. So, who's throwing this party? One of your co-workers?
Jaune: Mm-hm!
Saphron: Great! I'll have Pyrrha give me the full details on this girlfriend of yours!
Jaune: Eh?
Saphron: No offense, Jaune, but you can be pretty naive. I just want to make sure the girl you're digging isn't just digging into you, right?
Jaune: Uh, well-
Saphron: And I'm gonna hold off on this promotion until I know you're happy!
Jaune: Y-You don't need to-
Saphron: Can't wait to hear all about her, baby bro! Ciao~! (Click)
Jaune: (Hangs up, Pacing) What do I do?!. What do I do?!. I need to find a girlfriend now!. If Saph finds out I lied, she'll think there's something wrong with me!. Then she'll never get that promotion, and Terra'll be mad at me!. Adrian will never play with me again!.
Jaune: (Phone rings, Answers) Saph, listen! About what I said earlier, I was just joking! I-
Boss: (Via phone) Having family trouble?. That's unusual for you.
Jaune: Oh! Headmistress! I'm so sorry, I was-
Boss: Good evening. I have a client for you, Rusted Knight.
Jaune: (Eyes dim)
Boss: The Glass Unicorn. Room 1220.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jaune: Excuse me.
Proprietor: Oh, hello again, Jaune! How can I help you?
Jaune: I'm going to a party tonight, so I need my slacks patched up ASAP. Er, if that's okay, of course.
Blake: (Flinches, Thinking) How did he get by without me noticing?!. Jaune... Hm... Right. Jaune Arc, 26 years old, never married, and never divorced. Parents deceased. Seven sisters, six dexeased, one surviving, couple years older. They're both ordinary civilians with nothing on their files. Maybe I'm getting sloppy-
Jaune: Um, miss? You've been staring at me since I came in here. Is there something I can help you with?
Blake: He sensed me watching him?!. How?!.
Blake: Oh, uh, no. I just thought... you were really cute. Excuse me for being rude.
Jaune: Wait, so... I'm good looking to you?
Blake: Um, yes?
Jaune: Miss-
Penny: Mama! I got measured! Huh? Who's she?
Blake: He's another customer, like us.
Jaune: (Thinking) I almost asked another man's wife on a date! I've heard stories of men being murdered for things like that. BUT THIS TIME, I'D BE THE ONE TO DO THE KILLING.
Penny: !
Jaune: No! I can't even fantasize about a thing so horrible! It's thoughts like those that'll expose me as an ASSASSIN.
Penny: (Thinking) A- A- A- A- ASSASSIN?!.
Blake: (Spy)
Jaune: (Assassin)
Penny: (Telepath, Starved for entertainment) SOOO COOOOL!.
Blake: I thought he'd make for a good fit for the husband role, but his intuition could threaten my mission.
Jaune: I thought she'd be able to pull off the girlfriend role, but I can't afford any kind of unnecessary bloodshed.
Penny: (Looks down, Covering her face) Oh, boo hoo hoo! I am so sad about Papa!
Blake: P-Penny?! What are you-?!
Penny: I just miss my papa so very, very, very much! If only he could see me in my pretty dress!
Jaune: Oh, is your husband away?
Blake: Ah... You see... My husband actually passed a few years ago. I've been working hard to support my daughter as a single mother.
Jaune: Then... Then no one could try to kill me if I asked her!.
Jaune: Um, excuse me...
Finding Penelope's finsta would be so fun 😭
She'd have taunted you, telling you she would accept you when you would find it.
The next day? You came to her desk with a gigantic smile, showing her your phone screen.
On your screen? @prettypenny222, with an adorable cat picture as the profile picture.
She gasped, eyes on yours.
'How did you do it?'
'I figured out you blocked me to add more difficulty, so I used my old tablet, and created a new account. Then, I went to Morgan's instagram, because thankfully this man's socials are always public, and I tried everything. Your name, your date of birth... Obviously that did not work.'
She was nodding along your every word, captivated by your train of thought, a small smile on her lips. You really were listening to her tips!
'So I went on Derek's followings list again, and I tried everything BAU related. This still did not work. And then, I went on his last picture, and I saw a comment calling him a " gorgeous and sexy marvel of a man" when I saw he responded with "babygirl", I knew I found you.'
'That's such a good way to proceed, I'm so proud of you!'
She gave you a big smile, taking her phone from her desk and furiously typing for a few seconds.
'I just unblocked you! You, my dear, will have access to my every thoughts and pictures.'
'That's exactly what was missing in my life, thank you, Pretty Penny.'
You gave her a small wink, going away as you accepted her friend request, the blonde watching you go away.
She would never tell you she made your quest easier on purpose, you seemed way too proud for her to do so.
RTC headcanons: Penny/Jane Doe Edition!
FOR CONTEXT! I don’t believe the Penny from RTC is Penny Lamb from Legoland, so headcanons about her will probably be skewed compared to Legoland canon :)
Penny has so many bandaids everywhere. Her arms, her nose, her legs. It’s not that she gets into a bunch of fights but she’s just so clumsy and never looks before she leaps
Penny can play the ukulele, guitar, and violin. She loves string instruments and has had a few duets with Noel
Penny wasn’t always strictly religious, but over time she found comfort in religion. She still supports people outside her religion and is genuinely kind to all
Jane Doe had around a few hours before the rest of the choir was brought to the warehouse, so she asked Karnak who she could possibly be, even trying to get any former fortune he could have given her, only to come up short
When Penny first arrived at Uranium her mothers gave her a new doll. It was a crocheted doll of herself, and although she did adore it, she preferred her parents’ vintage doll with blond curls and big black eyes
When Penny died, she had her doll tucked in her uniform, so Jane Doe, after realizing she was in limbo, found the one thing that she felt drawn to and used it as her own head
Penny is a lesbian, and had the biggest crush on Constance before they died. She also developed a crush on Ricky, but she was too shy to tell either of them
Jane Doe is a cat fanatic, something she doesn’t understand, but Penny loved all breeds of cats and that love made it to Jane
Penny will eat cheese with anything. Like her mac and cheese obsession, she just really loves cheese. The others are genuinely worried for her gut, but she assures them it’s fine (it’s not)
Jane Doe only has feelings relating to Penny’s life, no memories. As such, when she says, “No parents came” a stab of pain shot in her chest, for reasons she never understood
After Penny came back, it took her some time to remember who she was. But as Jane Doe had no recollection of her life, Penny now has no recollection of her death. She doesn’t know why the choir means so much to her if she wasn’t so close with much of them
Penny actually went up to Ricky and signed a little for him when they met. She just signed “Hi, I’m Penny!” and she and Ricky became really fast friends
Penny never understood why Noel loved old French movies, but she does enjoy watching them with him, he gets so excited and dramatic and it makes her laugh
Pen and Mischa never really interacted when they were alive. Sometimes she’d tell him some fun facts and sometimes he’d help her out with bullies, but they didn’t really have that much of a connection
Penny avoided being a subject of Ocean’s superiority complex by just doing whatever she asked, being quick to comply, so Ocean never said anything about her
Penny was bullied a lot for being adopted, but she always brushed it off with a quick-witted response and sometimes she’ll punch someone in the nose
Penny is the definition of luck. Last minute exam studying? She’ll have perfect marks in the end. Forgot something important? There’s always a chance Penny will have it or will find an easy way to get it. Lost something? Penny will look around for .98 seconds and find exactly what you’re looking for
If Pen was incredibly lucky, Janey is incredibly unlucky. As she’s the opposite of Penny, everything around her always fails and never works the way she wishes
Penny’s mothers were devastated when they learned their daughter wasn’t coming back from the fairground. They told everyone in Uranium about Penny, but no one seemed to remember her, or really care. When Penny came back, this never existed as she was surprisingly the sole survivor of the accident
Penny always regretted covering her face in pictures after she came back, because her memories with the choir were few, and any picture she saw of them with her always had her hand or an object covering her face
Jane Doe was aroace, yet felt an urge to be around Constance and Ricky. After Ricky gave her a name, Savannah, a feeling similar to friendship formed in her chest, is if she knew Ricky, as if she cared for them
For Penny’s seventeenth birthday, she had a masquerade-esqe party and asked every guest to wear a mask. The choir complied and came in masks and had a wonderful time. Penny didn’t tell anyone it was because of her hatred of seeing herself in pictures, but when she looked back on the pictures of that night, there was one where all six of the choir’s faces were revealed, including her own, laughing with them. That now is her favorite picture, and she keeps it with her forever
Penny for the RW//BY character ask! 👀
PENNY!!!!! *falls in the yamcha pose*
OTP: This is going to be so wack….. but…. Her and ilia. Why? I don’t know. They’re both cute. That’s it. That’s literally it. And freckles. Techameleon sweep.
Brotp: Her and Winter :3
NOtp: her and rubes after v8….. YIKES even if I do adore the ship before then
Thing I like about her character: everything! Her designs, her personality, her quirks and interactions with others and just… she is arguably my favorite character in the whole show. Plus, again, that V2 scene with her and ruby was a little too relatable to my own experiences…. In a good way.
What I dislike: Nothing to do with her, just whatever the absolute fuck they decided to do to her in V8. That alone is seriously one of the worst things this show has and will ever do for me.
Their best volume: V7!!!! I loved her! And her becoming a maiden was super powerful for me… I loved it. Even if V8 immediately fucked it over lol
OMG THAT LAST CHAPTER ??
I hate the fact that I predicted something for Alex 😭😭 I wanna cry and think about other fact for her and James. Please let the squad do a thing because I’m so sure that the thing is not competent and just a big incentive. I have so bad feelings about it. That make me things about some protective prompt so à thank you I guess ??
Again, I really need to put commentaries on that fic but right now it’s pure excitement because yeah ?? The chapter was amazing. I want to all hug them. And just say “You’ll still together in the future, and you do all the job you really wanted”
Alex, please we know you need to loose up a bit. But don’t lose everything and just URRRH I’m mad and not mad because I will probably be just like her. But of course he’s HIM?? For all of them you said yes to HIM!!l?? (Yes I have beef and I hold grunges against that SOB)
James my boy please speak up. You’ll deserve all the happiness and to share it with Alex. I do love his nickname. Like Mini, except he’s not that short ? It’s like 178cm ? I do believe he’s tall, not like Hotch but a bit smaller than Hotch. So big guy, big heart. Be Alex’s shiny white knight as clichée as it is.
Spencer. Be delusional. You have all the right to pretend. You’re munchkin, also need to learn how to trust and speak about your nightmare. I know it’s scary but they literally adopted you.
For JJ, please, the buttheading won’t let you happy. You wanna dance ? So go dance, cry,scream every inch of breath in your lungs. You deserve it.
Penny, she was just an adorable self. She’s totally a rainbow disguise in humans. I really like her friendship with Hotch and the one she starts with Hayley. Love her the best gal. She needs to be one of the people who have you know the really long speech during mariage ? That’s her and if they’ve bet on when Hotch and Hayley will finally be together, she won. I just know it
Emily caring about her cakes is so relatable when you grew up without really roots. The only constant is the food. So yeah I hope she has her three slices and even a fourth. And her, with Alex, the one who just encourage some chaos, but she gets really good point about livin’ the Vida loca (even if we could have avoid the things with that)
Derek’s pov is really cool too. I hope he stays in his first career choice! By the way, did he succeed to sleep through Spencer nightmares ? Because if not, that poor boy don’t have good enough sleep too
Dave having writer block, and just letting his family deciding for him about his career. He’s like super sad and somehow a bit ironic/funny. But bet, he’ll surpass himself for that assignment and he will let the other read his stuff. Did he have a Wattpad or AO3 account ??
Hotch, you also can be delusional. I KNOW YOU WERE ON THE VERGE OF TEARS BECAUSE OF CHARLIE INTENTION AND KINDNESS. He can’t deny it. He will. But he’s body language betrayed him >:). Poor boy, he was like “yeah theatre = more time with Hayley” to “Oh no I need to do actual theatre things, like singing and dancing”.
Haley darlin’ please please please HARPER THAT B’TCH NOT YOUR FRIEND!!! Let her go you don’t have to be with her. Cut of her bad vibes and toxicity 💀
I’m glad the B’s nicknames siblings could at least count on Ned and Charlie. Thank you to be really good parents and general grown up.
(Please tell me when Hotch and Haley will get married they’ll redo that scene but w/ the actual kiss)
I might rant a bit, but yeah that was a really fresh review.
I’m so glad and happy to read about your writing. I really hope that you’re somehow fine and happy. 🧡🧡
YES YES YES THESE ARE MY FAVORITE KINDS OF REVIEWS!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
Hi!! Do you have other animals or creatures you associate with/feel close to, other than bunnies?
I hope you're all stable and having some fun times with R! I'm proud of you for moving out from your parents <3
Hi!!! I love your questions and your kind words, you always manage to brighten my day and make everything a little softer 💛 thank you so much Anni
Heres some animals that are not bunnies we identify with/like a whole lot:
- 🐻 bears! Bears have always been a favorite of mine, both in big scary beastie and little soft teddy form! It’s not something I’d been able to express until my adulthood because while My Animal was Bunnies, my closest sibling’s was Bears, and therefore I could Not Have That. It became more okay because said sibling relates to other animals nowadays
Anyway, Dosy(as the oc) liking bears was always a trait of hers because shes always been like a mama bear to all the other robots. The main Dosy is named Dosybear for her protective and soft tendencies
- Birdies 🕊️ (songbirds, chickens and crows) I LOVE bird watching, and bird feeding, and supporting Birds because I love them so so much. If you ever ask me if I want to see a bird, my answer is YES! Birdy Belle got her name because she absolutely loves watching birds so much and narrating the possible bird drama to anyone who will hear it
Chickens because I have a strong affinity for farm animals and I raised chicks as a very small child and also a couple of flocks of them later in life. There is little more wonderful than petting a chicken until she tips over in your lap and you both take a nap in the sunshine. Hail, Dosy and the littles have all always loved chickens
Crows because my beloveds take the form of Corvids in my stories to watch over all the forms of me <3 R’s “evil” crow self owns the Docile and all robot parts and it feels very secure. Mal takes form of a raven to watch over Princess Rose/the Flower parts!
- cats/tigers 🐯 we were born in the year of the Tiger and my birthday makes me a Lion(Leo). I used to not like that idea at all but really embraced the identity in teenagehood when Taiga emerged. I also used to rp a tiger girl and she’ll always be close to my heart. I also just think tigers are really neat!
There has been some thought about a nonhuman part that’s a nonspeaking cat, too. I can’t tell if it’s just a side of Taiga or what, they only ever take form to pester R so yknow.. hesitant to make any claims.
I’ve also just always adored cats, both my late Penny and earlier Anika, my affectionate and pretty little ladies
- sheep 🐑 This is mostly just an OC thing, because one of my favorite lore worlds with R is our demonic sheep people and the lives they lead. I just love sheep though too, something something ancient-feeling ties to both farm animals and church themes
- wolfs 🐺 While I don’t feel hugely connected to wolves that much, we do have a couple of werewolf parts so it would be silly not to include them (Cerberus and Percy)
- Seaslugs that look like bunnies 🐠 While they are not bunnies, they may as well be. Mossballs also fall under this category but they are not bunnies or even animals at all
Also under the underwater category, we have a part who loves Angelfish, and Hidey really loves Sea Angels
- bees 🐝 I had a phase where I was just obsessed with bees and learning all about them. Same thing with frogs? I don’t really remember it and it was really hugely a Taiga hosting thing I think. I do love bees still but I don’t seek out aesthetics with them because insects are too much of a trigger for me. I do have a lot of bee-themed things though that are very cottagecore
~~
I think thats it! I feel very selfish for claiming to like so many things, but I also feel like this list is incomplete at the same time u u hmmm complicated feelings
But thank you for the ask, I hope you don’t mind my rambles!
Hiiii, this is Mondapan. I'm out looking at the fall colors. Please leave me a message and I'll call you right back.
Another episode about Battamonda! Yeah~! Still~! The surprising kinship between a wannabe royal assassin and human experimentation advocate forced into hiding as a construction worer... and a little lady who wants to be a picture book author when she grows up :)
Spoilers, I guess...
-Ahh, I see Elle-chan's graduated to apples.
-Lots and lots of autumnal flavors~!
-...all gonna be gone in a couple weeks thanks to December. Enjoy this harvest while you can, Sora. You're gonna hear Christmas music until your eardrums become swiss cheese.
-Yep. That's all five things!
-Guess Ageha has no fall plans.
-She can claim victory in the iron stomach category though.
-Creative blocks aaaaaaaaaagh
-You fool~! It must be cutting edge!
-"T... The earth???"
-So stressed not even her wife's touch can rouse her from her death.
-"NOOOOOO MY MATERIAAAALS"
-Awww, Monda-kun, you've really come a long way :) (BATTAMONDA YOU FUCKING BITCH, I WILL SWING YOU BY YOUR ANTENNAE LIKE A FUCKING MORNING STAR)
-Break time :)
-Hello, Kabaton!
-Kabaked potats....
-"Look at this idiot. So far away from his life of villainy. Bet Empress Underg forgot he even existed. ....Please let me come hooooooome! DX"
-Leeeeaves~!
-Making your move I see, Sora.
-Hello, Monda-san.
-...I have to wonder what horrible things happen in the Underg Empire for him to think in such constantly contradictory ways.
-Damn dude, you make Girinma seem stable.
-...oooooh.
-He was busted down there.
-Exactly who is Empress Underg, and for what reason does Skeebo adhere to her so hard?
-Mild working theory: Since we know virtually nothing about her aside from , it's safe to assume she's related to Elle in some way. In a familial sense, maybe, but more obviously as foils for one another. From what little we learn from her brief appearances, it can be safely assumed she's not just despotic but also, as we can infer from her absence when Battamonda took center stage as the villain, very negligent. She didn't bother to scold him once despite his constant fuck-ups, and seems to rely on Skeerhead for everything.
-Okay, this is the good shit right here.
-Ohhhhhh fuck
-It's all a part of nature, Monda. A great big circle of life, like that movie with the lions. ...the good one.
-Really struck a nerve with him.
-Dust in the wind, dear Sora. Just like Kansas said.
-Chilly
-Monda-saaaaaaan?
-Holy shit Skeerhead, you are so coldblooded.
-Mashiron!
-"If you wish to protect whatever life this fool has left, then perhaps in the next world you'll learn to burn the leaves you rake. Kyoborg, splatter them!"
-Prism...
-Oh that's good
-"I suppose five pennies in the gutter are still worth a nickel."
-The one they love, huh?
-Or rather, I suppose the one Skeebo loves.
-That's just the kind of people they are, Monda. Maybe you'll get it one day.
-Oh shush Tsubasa, this was Elle's episode. You sit yo ass down, son.
-Damn good episode this week though.
-All the autumn leaves were gorgeous, Monda and Mashiron's interactions were funny and adorable, the tease of just what the Empress is was fascinating, and Skeebo bounces back from his... frankly kinda pathetic showing last episode as a great villain again!
-...damn I want a hotdog now.
-Ohhhhhh, something big's happening next time, eh?
-Shalala, Skeebo, and a title like that? How could it not?
Gonna talk about the Yuu & Scarabia dynamic underneath the cut
I mentioned before that Yuu would have a good dynamic with Savanaclaw since I thought her personality would mesh well with those guys, and I also feel the same way about the Scarabia guys, whom I wanted to talk about here since their dorm is another favorite of mine.
For starters, Yuu absolutely adores Kalim cause he’s adorable and literal sunshine incarnate, literally one of the sweetest guys she has ever met in her entire life, which truthfully isn’t really saying much because she grew up surrounded by villianous people but still lol
Kalim is the first student Yuu interacts with at NRC because, during the ceremony, she helped him out when Grim set his butt on fire because she just couldn’t just leave the poor guy alone.
She was surprised by how kind/friendly he was toward her. Sure, she helped put the fire out, but because of the people she’s used to being around, she really wasn’t expecting much thanks.
What really caught her off guard was how bright/warm his smile was. It was something she was only used to seeing in her visions of All Might & Midoriya.
Needless to say, it didn’t take long for Kalim to become one of Yuu’s favorite people on campus. She just couldn’t help but be drawn to him since she was so unused to kind people like him who treated her like she actually mattered - like she was someone he actually enjoyed being around.
Because of how he is, Kalim takes an immediate liking to Yuu and always approaches her whenever he sees her, even if it’s just to chat for a few minutes.
Hanging out with her makes him happy since he can tell she’s happy whenever he’s around, and it’s not because of what he could do for her with his vast wealth.
Yuu just likes being around him because she likes him as a person. All she sees is Kalim, not the son of a wealthy merchant family.
Yuu doesn’t even realize how rich he is until Book 4, but even after learning it, she doesn’t care since money doesn’t matter to her. However, she does freak out anytime he tries to give her something expensive or whenever he makes a comment related to careless spending since her penny-pincher heart can’t handle it lol 😂
Kalim also likes how Yuu doesn’t mind when he’s physically affectionate with her. Rather, she welcomes the physical contact since she’s touch-starved. He doesn’t know that, but Kalim does eventually come to the sad conclusion that she doesn’t normally get that kind of affection after spending enough time with her, which just makes him wanna dote on her even more.
The Yuu & Kalim relationship is just really soft and pure. Their combined sunshine energy is powerful enough to blind anyone watching them if they’re not careful lol Jamil is completely immune though since he’s used to it haha
Another funny aspect of this relationship is I like the idea of Yuu starting to having visions about Kalim after Book 4′s events. They don’t happen all the time, but occasionally, her Quirk will show her whenever Kalim gets into trouble which leads to her warning Jamil ahead of time or her trying to get to Kalim before he does something he shouldn’t lol
This leads to Yuu experiencing just what a tough job Jamil has, so she really respects him for all the work he has to do day in and day out.
Of course, that doesn’t mean Yuu was okay with Book 4′s events. She definitely did not approve of him using his UM on her or what he had planned to do to Kalim.
Sure, she understood where Jamil was coming from after hearing the whole story, but she thought his hatred was misplaced since Kalim really didn’t deserve the brunt of it.
Which is why Yuu helped put an end to Jamil’s plan and made sure to punch him at the end of the Overblot battle lol
However, Yuu doesn’t hold a grudge against Jamil for everything that happened. She gets everything off her chest during the battle, so she just treats him normally after the Overblot and doesn’t view him in a negative light like most people would.
This surprises Jamil and makes him suspicious since he doesn’t understand why she has no issue talking to him after everything he did. Her actions just don’t make any sense.
This is why Yuu decides to tell Jamil about her past. Up until this point, she has mostly kept it a secret and hasn’t told anyone about her being a cage fighter since she didn’t want anyone to look at her with pity or treat her any differently after learning about her horrible past.
The reason Yuu picks Jamil, of all people, despite not even being super close to him, is because she sees similarities between the two of them because she basically grew up being treated like a slave/servant. Either she was being forced to fight to make money for Mumei or she was forced to do all the cooking/cleaning at home.
Before coming to TW, she didn't really have any freedom, so she could understand where Jamil was coming from in Book 4 even if she didn't completely agree with his methods since she knew Kalim was nothing like Mumei and shouldn't be receiving the full brunt of Jamil's hatred/anger.
Yuu tells Jamil about her past so he'll know that her treatment of him isn’t because she's really nice/a saint. It's because she doesn't think anyone is irredeemable. At least, she hopes they aren't. Otherwise, she's just as bad as him since she did plenty of things to survive that she regrets, so she doesn't see herself as being any better than him.
So, out of all the guys, Jamil has the most info about her past, with Leona likely being second since he's so observant and pays attention to the things she says that hint toward her past.
(As far as why Yuu is doing this, it’s because she genuinely wants to become friends with Jamil. While they didn’t have a lot of interactions prior to Book 4, Yuu still had come to like him as a person since he had helped her with her studying for her final exams, and he had never been overly rude toward her.
Plus, there was just something about the way Jamil held himself that drew Yuu’s attention to him. Something about him felt familiar, and it wasn’t until learning about his past that she realized she was seeing similiaries between the two of them because his mannerisms sometimes reminded her of how she acted around Mumei in the past.
It was while Yuu was staying at the Scarabia dorm in Book 4 that she really started to get to know Jamil. There was some apprehension on her end since her Quirk had warned her about his UM and his future Overblot after she had gotten herself trapped at the dorm.
However, despite this, it was hard for her to be completley wary of Jamil since there were moments when he’d be genuinely nice to her, like during the training in the dessert when Jamily scolded her for giving most of her water to Grim and made her drink his to keep herself hydrated while they were running.
Throughout the whole experience, Yuu would get glimpses of the different sides of Jamil, so it was hard for her to come to hate him when she found out about his true plans for Kalim.
That’s why, after getting out all those negative emotions she felt during the Overblot battle, Yuu decided that she wanted to properly befriend Jamil, so she could see what kind of person he truly was.)
Another reason Yuu felt comfortable telling Jamil about her past is because she didn’t think he would treat her any differently. She didn’t think he would give her special treatment, and she was right.
If Jamil were in her shoes, he wouldn’t want any special treatment either, just as he doesn’t want people treating him any differently after hearing all the details about his past, so he just treats her how he’d want to be treated.
However, that said, Jamil does become slightly softer toward her, not out of pity but because she becomes someone he feels truly comfortable around since she gets where he’s coming from. Sure, she hasn’t gone through everything he has, but she at least has a better idea as compared to most people.
Also, it really impacts him when he learns that he’s the only person that Yuu has fully confided in about her past. Of all the people to get trusted with that kind of information, Jamil never expected someone like him to be chosen.
Sure, it was because of the similarities between their pasts, but the fact that she still trusted him with that information after everything he had done just really threw him for a loop.
It still takes a little while for Jamil to completetly stop himself from being suspicious of Yuu when she approaches him without ill intentions, but eventually, he comes to trust in her words of wanting to become friends with him.
After spending enough time with her, a lot of which involves Yuu volunteering to help him with chores or her just taking a moment to talk to him since she wanted to hang out with him for a little bit when he’s not super busy, Jamil grows fond enough of her that he starts to look after her like he does Kalim.
Obviously, his top priority is Kalim, but if he ever notices something going on with Yuu when he has a free moment, he’ll subtlely check on her. Or if he thinks she needs a break, he’ll invite her over to the Scarabia dorm, either to cook with him or have fun with Kalim who always welcomes her visits.
One funny aspect of this relationship is that Yuu is very generous with compliments. She’s the type that if she has something nice to say about someone she typically says it and won’t get embarrassed even if it involves complimenting someone’s appearance.
So she’s often telling Jamil how much she admires his many skills/talents and has brought up many times how pretty/handsome she thinks he is.
Jamil really wishes she would stop cause he is not used to all this positive attention which can be really embarrassing since she has completely pure motives lol However, deep down, he definitely enjoys the praise; he just won’t admit it haha
Regency, Gothic, Romance, and Dragons
Tumblr media
My two reactions to this book were, in no particular order:
*giggles, flips hair, kicks feet, swoons*
And
"HOW DARE YOU CALL ME OUT THAT ACCURATELY!?"
I thought Stephanie Burgis's Scales and Sensibility was a lovely, fluffy romance book with tiny adorable lap dragons, but the sequel was somehow all that and then some and was even better! So let's talk Claws and Contrivances.
*Some minor spoilers for Scales and Sensibility below the break*
This book follows up with the dear, delightful Rose Tregarth as she lives with the Parry family at Gogodd Abbey in Wales after the tragic death of her parents prior to the events of the last book.
Unlike Elinor, who is thrust into the role of "poor relation who is barely not a servant in the eyes of the family but is functionally servant," Rose is loved and valued by her Aunt and Uncle Perry and her rambunctious cousins. Possibly the only person who doesn't see Rose as valuable is herself.
Which is absolutely ridiculous, because our girl is on a mission to single-handedly save...basically everyone in her immediate vicinity. Including the illegally smuggled baby dragons in the neighbor's gothic manor that is actively decaying into ruins.
Rose has had a "justice for all" bent for her whole life, but it has sharpened since her parent's death because somewhere in the trauma of dead parents and being forcibly separated from her sisters, Rose has decided that she is not worthy of care and that the fact that she didn't see her father blowing literally every penny the family had on a ponzi scheme in time to stop him means that her imagination and dreams are a fatal flaw on par with fratricide. And thanks to that, Rose spends half the book planning to marry her love interest off to her younger sister and trying to talk him into thinking that he doesn't care about her.
Rose. Girl. Honey, sweetie, friend. LET THE MAN LOVE YOU. HIS ASS IS SMITTEN.
The smitten ass in question belongs to one Cornelius Aubrey. Those of you who read Scales and Sensibility will recognize our boy as Benedict's grouchy scholarly friend who might miss a house burning down around him if he was buried in a good book and who is ABSOLUTELY INSISTENT that dragons are not magic. I liked Mr. Aubrey in the first book. In this book, I would take a dragon attack for the man. Aubrey is quietly steadfast, makes logic and fact two of the sexiest things ever, and is absolutely not afraid to ask Rose who is going to care for her.
Literally, this man had me screaming.
As a recovering academic, Aubrey gave me EVERYTHING that is good and idealized about academia and "for the love of the research" about scholars, and then he could back that shit up with being genuinely sweet and adorkable but with surprising quiet strength. Do I sound like I'm in love? Because I might be in love.
Now, this wouldn't be regency fantasy without our dearest darlingest dragons, and where Elinor only had Sir Jessamyn to deal with, Rose had Rhiannon, Griff, and Llewelyn to look after. We don't spend a lot of time with Llewlyn, but Rhiannon and Griff have just as much--if not more--personality as Sir Jessamyn, and I love all our little scaly friends. They all get individualized magic powers, and I actually think I prefer that to a standardized set of dragon powers, which tends to be more the thing.
I super do not want to offer any more plot spoilers for this book because I want y'all to go out and read it. Stephanie Burgis has done a phenomenal job with this book, and it is criminal that these books aren't better known.
Okay back to happy fun stuff!
Tumblr media
This moment is just so human and relatable I love it. We see James playing with his tie when his speech doesn't quiet land as he hoped it would which is considered a self soothing gesture. He's a little nervous and anxious and I imagine based off of what Penny says later in general he doesn't do great with public speaking which is such a mood. I don't know this moment is just so real and feels like a situation any of us could find ourselves in. We think a nice gesture will land and it....doesn't It's no one's fault it doesn't, James had no reason to know the girls didn't really want or need licenses anymore and the girls, understandably, have been through a lot so when the moment happens its kind of when they realize that it doesn't matter as much anymore with everything happening. No one did anything wrong or mean or anything like that. It was just one person trying to do something nice for someone, and that someone....not needing the thing anymore.
It's human and awkward and shows a side to James we never really see again and I just adore it and feel the moment within my very soul. Don't worry James, I too am very awkward if my preplanned talk gets derailed and suddenly goes in a different direction that I am not prepared to handle.
Tumblr media
Bonus Penny because she is precious and wonderful and I love her and her optimism and support. 1000000/10 friend. I want to have a friend like Penny in my life.
arthur vs eddie anon here. i am happy you like my thoughts hihi
though the eddie thoughts i mostly have from another eddie blog who has great meta for chrissie as well but i added the arthur thoughts and my own though i dont feel comfortable taking credit for the eddie side, so i wouldnt go so far and call myself galaxy brain. maybe a sun system brain haha
though here more thoughts, this time all my own: go back one generation and look at penny vs wayne. both having it hard raising an abused/traumatised kid alone while being poor, working shifts - but we see arthur gives up everything of space, his bed, all for penny. but wayne gives up the only room and the only real bed for eddie and sleeps on a fold out bed in the living-room. eddie has space to grow and find himself, his own person. arthur was suffocated from the start.
and even when the killings happen we see the contrast: arthur killed the three men and penny doesnt know hes the killer but immediately judges the killer and thus arthur. when chrissy is found dead in the munson trailer and everything points at eddie being the killer wayne knows right away eddie is innocent. -> penny doesnt know arthur enough to tell he did it while nothing points at him. wayne knows eddie so well he immediately knows eddie is not the killer even though everything points that he is.
regarding what you said about choices: penny was the one never giving arthur the choice while wayne was the one enabling eddies choices
and one other thing for the big differences. arthus is a wolf in a sheeps coat and eddie is the sheep in a wolfs coat. i found that metaphor fitting for eddie because he keeps talking about lost little sheep
thank u for listening to my little ramblings <3
I adore your thoughts!!! I was worried I'd disappointed you with my lacklustre responses but holy shit I'm just... almost excited?? No, I am excited to be discussing these characters and their differences with you! I'd always thought they had a lot of similarities and differences but I hadn't taken the time to sit down and think about it and hhhhhh this is some good food!!!😍💗
A sun system brain for SURE! There's so much good meta out there about Eddie (and all the other ST characters of course, but he gets a special mention since he's the topic of conversation) and over the years I've read some amazing Arthur takes, too!
YES YES YES omgggg ~ I agree so hard!!! Arthur gave Penny everything and for what??? He's a natural caretaker but I have to wonder how much of that is his caring nature as part of his personality, and how much of it was because he was groomed from a young age to be the man of the house (the whole pseudo-husband thing still turns my stomach🤢). Penny kept Arthur stuck in that apartment; he's a high school dropout from fifteen (I think that's tenth grade? I'm not familiar with the US education system) and clearly had to work any job he could get to support the two of them. I also wonder how dependent she actually had to be on him because he's gone long hours, working 59 - 60 hour weeks and so Penny would have been left all on her for all that time but she's usually comfy and cosy when he comes home so she must be able to do things herself. She's a victim too and what happened to her in relation to Wayne and then further on in her arc is all heart-breaking, but I wonder about the reality of it a lot. Arthur was suffocated by the woman who was meant to take good care of him and raise him (not to mention how she ended up being allowed to keep Arthur by the social work side of things given how the paperwork shows she was lobotomised and needed medications etc. etc. is sketchy as fuck too).
Whereas Wayne did everything the right way - he chose to take Eddie in, he gave him space and clearly encouraged heavily everything Eddie wanted; I have no doubt that he pulled extra shifts to make sure Eddie could afford patches, materials for his clothes and posters and the Corroded Coffin flag, to make sure Eddie could eat, and I would put real money on Wayne being the one who bought Eddie the van, too! Wayne gave everything up for his boy, his boy, and was a real parent to Eddie. Eddie flourished and thrived under Wayne's care, and indeed was protected by him a great deal. Their dynamic is one of my favourites and I write about it quite often over on my Eddie blog.
Wayne knew Eddie; trusted his boy, knew him better than anyone else in Hawkins (except Hellfire, but Hellfire didn't live with Eddie and Wayne did, so Wayne saw more of Eddie than anyone else), and defended Eddie time and again from the entire fucking town. Penny either wouldn't or couldn't defend Arthur; it's implied she's at least complicit in the abuse he suffered at the hands of her boyfriend at the time when Arthur was a child, whereas Wayne was probably the one who took Eddie in to protect him from the parental abuse he suffered (this was confirmed by Joel, the actor who played Wayne, in a recent interview which I can send you the GIFsets to if you're interested) and did everything he could to give Eddie a better life even though he was also struggling in Hawkins.
The contrast is just... heartbreaking, honestly. Can you imagine if Arthur had been taken in by someone like Wayne?😭
YOU'RE SO SO RIGHT ON THE WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING THING OMLLLL😍😍😍😍😍
Thank you thank you thank you thank you for sharing your thoughts with me oml I am having so much fun talking about two of my three loves!!! These two characters are so interesting and multi-layered and I'm thriving hhhhhh💗💗💗💗 also peep at your tag so you can find again if you want to!
Penny's Big Breakaway Review - A Swinging Pendulum - Game Informer
Penny's Big Breakaway Review - A Swinging Pendulum - Game Informer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Coming off the success of Sonic Mania, the development team behind one of the best games in Sega’s storied series is back with an all-new franchise. Much like how the studio now known as Evening Star’s previous effort was a love letter to a bygone era of platforming, Penny’s Big Breakaway is a fond tribute to the 3D platformers of the late ‘90s. Evening Star clearly knows how to design a fantastic new entry in this well-worn genre, but some important issues drag down an otherwise strong game.
As Penny, a street performer whose yo-yo is transformed by a cosmic entity, you must leap, swing, spin, and dash through more than 11 colorful, themed worlds of stages. Each world is more colorful than the last, complemented by an upbeat soundtrack full of catchy tracks to push the action forward. In moving through these levels, Penny’s Big Breakaway steps into the spotlight in a big way. With the help of her enhanced yo-yo, Penny can pull off satisfying movement-based combos. Once you master the basics, jumping into the air, swinging from her yo-yo, landing in a roll, and smoothly launching into another combo with a twirl feels fantastic. In combat, however, I struggled with accidentally sending Penny flying off a cliff since double-tapping the attack button also initiates a dash.
[embedded content]
Thankfully, combat is only a small piece of the overall pie, and from the moment the movement mechanics clicked with me to the moment I watched the credits roll, I adored building momentum as I sped through the stages. Those terrific moves are accentuated by top-tier level design. Evening Star provides players with a ton of expertly designed courses that play into Penny’s abilities. Penny’s Big Breakaway is at its best when you’re moving quickly through obstacle courses, and the levels give you plenty of opportunities to do so; even the optional side objectives often require you to complete the given task within a time limit.
I relished every twisting path that let me quickly roll through, but I also enjoyed exploring every corner I could to find the collectibles used to purchase extra-challenging bonus stages. Levels typically offer branching pathways, and I loved trying to find the best route through the stages, though the fixed camera sometimes discouraged me from poking around too much. I was also disappointed by how many times I clipped through a stage element and had to restart from a checkpoint.
Sadly, the entire experience is brought down by a problem many early 3D platformers struggled with: depth perception. By the time I beat the story mode, I had lost count of the number of times I missed a seemingly easy jump because I couldn’t tell where Penny was in relation to the platform I was trying to land on. While the obvious answer is to look at her shadow’s position on the platform, my brain constantly needed to perform the calculus of whether Penny was where she looked like she was or where the game said she was. Unfortunately, this permeates the entire experience, poisoning the well of the overall gameplay.
A smaller issue that often rears its ugly head is that of screen-crowding. One of the key elements Penny’s Big Breakaway uses to propel the player forward is a group of penguins that swarm you in a capture attempt. Each time this happens, it immediately raises the level of on-screen chaos, but it sometimes goes too far as the penguins obscure everything happening in the level. Add to that an intrusive U.I. element that pops up when you’re near a side mission, and on multiple occasions, I had to blindly perform a leap of faith and hope for the best.
It’s a shame so many problems weigh on this otherwise enjoyable adventure. Even with the screen-crowding, bugs, and depth-perception troubles, I still look back fondly on the superb level design and movement mechanics. But because of those important detractors, Penny’s Big Breakaway lands as a solid 3D platformer unable to swing to the great heights it felt destined for.
Her Second Return
Just like all of you, and especially my fellow Penny fans, I am absolutely devastated by the Volume 8 finale. I had been in quite a state these last few days, utterly heartbroken, and actually nauseous at times. It feels strange to me to be legitimately grieving a fictional character, but it’s not a bad thing to feel this way. To me, this just shows that CRWBY loves her just as much as us to have written her so well that we connect so completely with her, that it feels like we lost an actual piece of ourselves when she’s gone.
But as you can probably tell by the title, this mega post isn’t gonna be about accepting this end, not in the slightest! Today I want to share canon evidence that can point towards another return of our beloved quirky red headed cinnamon bun! I’m here to spread this hope that I and others in the Nuts & Dolts dolts Discord server have!
I have this separated into many different sections to keep these thoughts organized. With that said, here goes…
A Father’s Words:
In Episode 7 of Volume 7, ‘Worst Case Scenario’ we learn the origins of Penny’s aura, and thus her soul. We also learn that it takes more aura each time she’s brought back. This leaves open an option that could be used at a later point.
Many people theorized that Pietro could indeed revive Penny one more time, which he would absolutely do. But there also lies the possibility that someone else could donate some of theirs, I’m not sure about this as I feel like it’s akin to blood donation where compatibility matters or there's a high risk of altering her, but the possibility is definitely there.
Now, the conversation in Chapter 5 of Volume 8, ‘Amity’ that Pietro and Penny have is an important moment for both Father and Daughter. It was there to show how her death in PvP all that time ago really did have a heavy impact on him and is still affecting him to this day.
Instead of continuing to pretend that everything is A-okay, like he had done for most of Volume 7, he finally lets his true feelings about how it come out to Penny for what is quite likely the first time. Even going so far as to say "Are you asking me to go through that again?" when she offers to take the risk of trying to lift Amity with her power. He wants Penny to be able to live her life.
Tumblr media
This entire scene with Pietro established “this is what will likely happen” even if circumstances are much different now, it doesn’t negate the fact that this is a key part of Penny’s story. Scenes like these have a purpose beyond simply making an eventual death all the more heart wrenching. Her never actually getting to live her life makes those scenes basically moot. It makes them effectively pointless from narrative point of view. Unless there's more to it.
Building Relationship:
The build up between Ruby and Penny the last two volumes has been absolutely phenomenal with a definite destination in mind, and this doesn’t feel like that destination. So much of the arc of this season was to help Penny. This girl that our main protagonist absolutely adores and treasures, it would just be awful to throw all of that out for what amounts to an avoidable end. Why use so much of their precious and very limited runtime on deliberately building up this relationship only to end it abruptly, and permanently, when they’re separated?
Tumblr media
In my opinion, RT is definitely smarter now than to intentionally set up what was really looking like a budding gay relationship only to kill one of them for good. If N&D wasn't actually going in a romantic direction, why would they leave in all of the romance-adjacent stuff that they got, that's not how ‘just friends’ act. And that is not something you use such valuable time building up for absolutely no pay off whatsoever...
Representation of Hope:
At its core, RWBY has always been about hope. It’s not at the forefront the whole time, but there's been an underlying theme of hopefulness that has persisted since it began. Some describe the show as a Hopepunk, I personally find this to describe RWBY really well. This genre of storytelling is about caring for things deeply and the courage and strength it takes to do so. It’s about never submitting or accepting the way things are. Fighting for what you believe in and standing up for others. RWBY fits all of this extremely well. How does this relate to Penny? She has been shown to be a sign of hope for everyone, but especially for Ruby, the main main protagonist. A prerequisite for a Hopepunk story is the hope.
Her first death in V3 was something that fundamentally changed Ruby. For the first time in the series, we see our main character all but broken by this event. With the loss of Penny, immediately afterwards, Ruby’s hope followed. She made up for it through determination and force of will. We see it affect her multiple times throughout the journey to Volume 7. But upon her return in V7, Hope reached a high point for everyone, the sheer relief on Ruby’s face is plain to see!
In V8 chapter 5 ‘Amity’, Penny literally raises hope by lifting the arena into the sky so Ruby could spread her message. And when she falls, and Amity with her, the connection is lost and hope plummets again. From there things take a very negative turn with the hack begins to take Penny’s agency.
Tumblr media
In chapter 11 ’Risk’ is the point in the arc where everyone is reunited for the moment, so two separate hero stories are no longer a thing at that point in time. For the time being focus seemed to be shifted to care about the characters and how they’re going to solve the current problems. This is also where Ruby reaches her lowest emotional point in the season.
It’s not huge, but it’s interesting how connected this is. Before Ruby and Yang share a good cry over learning the possible fate of Summer, Yang brings up restoring optimism and hope to Ruby after the younger sister storms out of the room in frustration. This is where Penny’s scenes take up the rest of the episode. Getting Penny back in control of her own body and safe again is what makes the ending of the episode much brighter, when just 5 minutes before Ruby had been distraught and scared. This then spills over into the group coming up with the plan to use the staff, putting the main group in a much better mood. Of all the things to go right, it’s interesting that it’s Penny.
Tumblr media
Things go wrong with the plan in the end and Penny dies. I find it interesting that once again, Penny got them hopeful in their chances of doing something right. Given said plan succeeded but at the cost of Penny of all people, Penny is shown to be the beginning and end of hope for them
The highest and lowest points for hope seem to directly correlate to when Penny’s around. When she comes back again, hope will return too, just like it had before. And because she’ll likely be back for good this time, the second return will probably be close to when Ruby is nearing the complete abandonment of hope. This would be pretty par for the course of the show honestly.
A little aside, but in a sense, Penny also represents Unity. The CCT in Vale fell after her first death, knocking out global communications and the unifying connection it gave. When it was restored for the briefest moment, she was there. Her body connected so she could allow for its launch, her soul lighting the night to hold up Amity with every ounce of her strength. So of course when the Hack succeeds and she falls, she takes global comms down again with her. At a smaller scale - even at the Hack's second last attempt to control her, she draws everyone in the Schnee Manor together. At the start of the volume, Yang states the one thing that they all agree on is not surrendering Penny.
Unity seems appropriate for one whose first song and wish was for but one friend, who would go on to find so many more in the process, and permit for a moment the possibility of all Remnant becoming friends once more. Where she first died, the name of the episode devoted to her story - Amity, "friendship", from the Latin root amicus, "friend" - she almost lives and dies with the very possibility of a united Remnant. It's no wonder she's a priority target for Salem, the great divider, and it seems natural that her next restoration may very well allow the next bid to bring the world together.
The Void Screams:
Moments after Penny's death, we hear a weird scream in the void space. It was a guttural, pained, angry scream, almost like the void space itself was crying out. All the portals shuddered and flickered when it happened.
Some think that this scream was Salem returning, but that happens earlier than Penny’s death, her return is signaled with cinder's arm acting up. We know this because after the arm finished flailing uncontrollably, Cinder said triumphantly "she's back." If it were Salem screaming, it would have happened after she fixed herself, but it didn't.
Tumblr media
And I doubt Cinder would have been surprised or unsettled by it considering she was happy Salem returned not long before it. And why would a Salem scream affect the portals anyway, she has no connection to the staff or it's magic.
Another thing to consider is the fact sound is not transmitted through the portals. Otherwise, they would've heard Oscar and the rest calling for them, or the screams of the citizens of Mantle and Atlas. This lowers the possibility of that scream being from Salem even further.
The sound really seems to be coming from something else entirely within the void, and that something is not at all happy. There’s also the fact that Penny was the only person who died in the void space, everyone else was just thrown out of it like Ruby and Co. The only logical cause to me is Penny. Her body was a product (or byproduct) of the same creation magic that made the void space, her blood seems to have been a trigger.
Tumblr media
Now I can't be sure about it, but this makes me feel like Penny is almost a part of creation itself? For whatever this thing is to be so angry, that is the only explanation I can think of currently. But all of this could possibly relate to the Narnia allusion of 'the willing victim killed in a traitor's stead' that others have brought up, which will be covered next.
Narnia Parallels:
Atlas has several parallels and references to fictional places (putting aside real world ones like the United States). One of those is that of Narnia, both on the surface and on a deeper level. It is a land of winter year round, where people struggle to survive and there is a present divide between those loyal to the current Monarch and those who are not. James is a parallel to Jadis, the White Witch, a ruler whose thoughts and cares aren’t exactly centered around the actual well being of the people. The hologram table in Ironwood’s office is designed to look like stone, like the Stone Table which features prominently in the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. He has a handpicked cadre of special agents/secret police, like how Maugrim and his wolves served Jadis. Another key parallel is how Jadis’s winter sets in to oppress and kill everyone in Narnia, but the Witch provides aid and protection to her loyal followers. She has all the power to spare harm to others, and uses it only for the loyal. As soon as Mantle splits from James and Atlas, no care is taken to protect them from the cold of Solitas even though he has every ability to turn the heating grid back on. His protection is only for the loyal.
Now that the parallel is established, let's look into the details. Starting with how James plays the role of Jadis.
"I had forgotten that you are only a common boy. How should you understand reasons of State? You must learn, child, that what would be wrong for you or for any of the common people is not wrong in a great Queen such as I. The weight of the world is on our shoulders. We must be freed from all rules. Ours is a high and lonely destiny." These are the words Jadis says in the Magician’s Nephew to justify the blood civil war she and her sister had waged for rulership of Charn, before she came to Narnia. She won that war, technically, but only after the last battle had been lost and her sister had marched right up to her so that they were face to face. Jadis’s troops were dead, her followers had surrendered, and the capital was under full control of her sister. But, she still had one card, one ultimate play to win and prove the throne of Charn was rightfully her. The Deplorable Word, a piece of old magic that killed everyone and everything except for her on Charn. It was monstrous, senseless, cruel beyond measure. But it got her that hollow victory. This mindset, the disregard for the people except as tools for her own will, the ultimate ‘aoe’ destructive move that no one had even considered her using, the unwillingness to stop even when by all practical measures the war is over, is a shocking parallel to James. In many ways, he is Jadis in mindset and deed.
Then there is the shared desire for A Thing that both James and Jadis have. For James it’s the Winter Maiden and control over her. For Jadis it’s the Silver Apples from the Tree of Youth. And funnily enough, the Maiden Powers parallel the Apples quiet well. These apples grant power and a life of eternal beauty, but should not be taken or eaten on one’s own initiative. They must be given, a gift granted by another, or only suffering will come from obtaining them. "For the fruit always works — it must work — but it does not work happily for any who pluck it at their own will. If any Narnian, unbidden, had stolen an apple and planted it here to protect Narnia, it would have protected Narnia. But it would have done so by making Narnia into another strong and cruel empire like Charn, not the kindly land I mean it to be.” Jadis’s immortality, and some of her power, come from the fact that she ate an Apple of her own will after stealing her way into the garden where the Tree of Youth had been planted. She gained the eternal life she had wanted and the power along with it, but she did so by taking it and was cursed because of it. Her skin turned pale and her lips blackened as if she were a frozen corpse given life. She will be trapped in a life of misery and hate according to Aslan- oh hey Cinder, how’s having stolen the Power you always wanted working out for you? Cinder had the power she wanted, but she only got hungrier, eager to claim more and increase her might. But in her pursuit she was defeated and humiliated by Raven, had to steal her way out of Mistral, and then suffered defeat after defeat while in Atlas. Only in the end, when she didn’t keep pursuing the Maiden Power, did she get any kind of victory.
The reason these parallels to Narnia are so important is one of the most famous events of the series. The cracking of the Stone Table and the rebirth of Aslan after his death. ‘When a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor's stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backward.’ Well, the ‘Stone Table’ in James’s office has cracked, and Penny strikes me as a pretty willing victim. She has never actually committed any actual treachery or harm, as she was the Protector of Mantle, and fought for its and Atlas’s people until the very end. And because of her death, the actual traitor, Winter, who loyally served James until he had gone too far, was saved. Through Penny’s self sacrifice, Winter was saved. So now Death itself will start working backward.
(Major props to my friend @catontheweb for writing this section, I was getting nowhere with it, if they weren't there this part wouldn't exist!)
Norse Mythology:
The tree we see in the post credit scene gives off some serious Yggdrasil vibes. Also called the World Tree, it is essentially all of creation in Norse Mythology. It connects all nine realms, including the God realms of Asgard, the human realm of Midgard, and the underworld of Hel.
Tumblr media
Humans are born from the branches of Yggdrasil. The web of Wyrd is woven for every person once they're born, and their path is set from there regardless of how many times the souls cycle over. But at the end, they're destined to end up in one of the worlds, for a myriad of reasons.
I believe Penny landed closest to this giant tree. She was on the center platform in the void space, so if that space is directly above the island(?) the tree is on, it makes sense for her to fall by the center nearest to the tree. This would not only open up all kinds of possibilities for the volume in general, but it would also create options for Penny.
The whole of Yggdrasil’s representations fit well into Penny’s story. Birth, growth, death and rebirth. We can count Penny’s appearance in V7 as birth for now, her growth is all her development in leaving =the military and becoming a Maiden, her death just happened, and her rebirth would be her revival. And this is a cycle she’s gone through before.
The Norse god Odin and Yggdrasil have quite a connection. In one story, Odin cut out one of his own eyes to gain knowledge from a pool underneath Yggdrasil. The only one that fell whose eyes alone are incredibly significant to the story was Ruby. So, they could choose to have her allude to Odin by having Ruby make some kind of deal with whatever entity likely rules over this magical place. An eye for Penny’s life.
There’s another story about Odin, Yggdrasil and the pursuit of knowledge. Odin so loved knowledge, that he sacrificed himself in a quest to learn the deeper magic of runes. It was believed one could only learn the magic spells from runes in death. So, Odin hung himself on Yggdrasil for nine days as an offering, and teetered between life and death. After he mastered the last spell on the ninth night, he ritually died and all light was extinguished from the world. Odin’s death lasted until midnight, when he was reborn and light returned to the world.
This story doesn’t fit Penny perfectly, but allusions often don’t. So If she really did land near the tree, she could be another loose representation of Odin’s story here. What she did wasn’t for knowledge, but to save her friends and keep Cinder from getting the Winter Maiden power. She believed it necessary that she sacrifice herself to achieve this end. As we established, Penny represents Hope, so her death means the loss of hope. This parallels Odin’s story of his death meaning the loss of light itself. So if this theory holds up, it would make this death temporary, until her rebirth and the return of Hope with her once again.
Alternatively, Ruby has the potential of loosely representing Odin in this story as well. Odin later uses the knowledge of the runes to do many things, but the most relevant one right now is awakening the dead. Both of these stories are about making a personal sacrifice to gain something that is desired. Ruby would absolutely make such sacrifices if it meant saving Penny.
It is said that Odin lived “according to his highest will unconditionally, accepting whatever hardships arise from that pursuit, and allowing nothing, not even death, to stand between him and the attainment of his goals." This sounds like Penny's arc of accepting the WM powers. This is more just a general connection between Penny and Odin, but I found it interesting.
Side Note: I encourage anyone who’s interested to look into RWBY connections to Norse Myth, there’s a surprising amount of things that feel eerily similar to the show. Likely just coincidental, but it’s fun to think about!
(If I got any of this wrong, I sincerely apologize by the way. I researched as best I could, but I admit it could have been lacking.)
Ambrosius and the Staff:
Ruby told Ambrosius "we kinda wanna keep her around longer than that" as part of her very specific instructions. Then Penny died about ten to fifteen minutes, at the absolute most thirty minutes later in-universe. I don’t know about you, but to me that seems very short to be considered ‘longer than that’. Technically it is, but when writing a story and a character says something like that, you typically don’t just kill the character they were referring to basically right away. It makes sense for a week-by-week watch, but in a volume binge, which many viewers do, it becomes ironic how fast Penny dies after being removed from her robotic body.
The first time we see the staff of creation being used, it's to save Penny. Using the staff of creation to help Penny is a sign of how incredibly important she is.
Tumblr media
They’ve even got this entire transformation sequence for her, so it wouldn’t make sense for them to throw all that away two episodes later. In a meta context, it’s a massive waste of time and budget considering the asset creation for Penny.
Penny is a character who has already hopped bodies two times. And now we're supposed to just believe that this time it really is a final death? Just two episodes after we were explicitly told her body isn't what matters, that "Her soul is who she is" and that "the mechanical parts are just extra"? From a writing perspective, it feels strange, like your breaking a promise right after making it. And frankly, CRWBY is better than that, which makes me think this is not the actual end for her.
A possible connection between Penny, Ruby, and the Staff (thus Creation) can be seen in the intro. As Ruby is falling and being dragged down into the darkness, she is shown reaching for the staff. In the void space, Penny is the one with the relic. So with Penny having this strong connection to Creation, and the lyrics “fight for every life” playing as Ruby reaches for the staff, it’s a safe assumption to make, with the knowledge we now have, that the Staff of Creation represents Penny in this particular moment. Which could mean that V9 will be about, at least partially, fighting for Penny’s life.
Musical Hints:
In terms of music, Friend, as a song for Penny, is very dissonant from the episode itself. The song is oddly cheerful for Penny’s recent untimely death, and it overall highlights the wrong parts of death. It’s simply too happy to be a song about losing one of the most, if not the most joyous characters in the entire show. The song also abruptly ends. There’s no outro, and while this could symbolize the fact that Penny died young, it could be that the song itself is unfinished in a story sense.
What do we hear just before the song finishes, though? A progression of notes that sounds eerily similar to the last line of the opening of Volume 8. The notes for “Fight for ev’ry life” and “Who fin’lly felt alive'' share a similar melodic structure, they aren’t perfect clones of each other, but they are incredibly similar, to the point where it seems intentional. Penny may very well be the life that the opening song is fighting for. It is also worth noting that the line “Fight for every life” comes just after “Sometimes it’s worth it all to risk the fall,” which is the exact wording used for the description in the Volume 8 finale. Team RWBY risked the fall, yet, strangely the opposite of fighting for every life happened with Penny’s sacrifice. Perhaps the time to fight for every life has yet to happen, and we will see it come Volume 9.
For another thing, the lyrics for Friend are entirely centered on Penny’s feelings for Ruby, to the point where they read very much like a bittersweet love song. The music itself is incredibly cheerful, as mentioned previously, creating a mood whiplash with the end of the volume. Why would we hear a song about Penny’s feelings for Ruby, sounding like a love song, if her death is supposed to be a tragic sacrifice akin to Pyrrha’s? The song may very well be giving a clue into its future use in the show proper.
If this was meant to be a good bye song, why make it so cheerful and romantic sounding? There's only one part about her dying and even then, it's just too accepting and goes right back into cheerfulness. The song is also pretty hopeful, telling Penny's story in a fairly chronological order. And the part where she talks about sacrifice is quite pointedly followed up by one about feeling alive. It also ends with the super cheerful chorus, the word "alive" being the last... (Remember the episode title: The Final Word)
(I want to thank my friend @shadow-0f-x for writing the majority of this section! I was struggling to choose how to tackle it as I am not well versed in music theory.)
What We Didn’t See:
It is likely that Penny understood Jaune's semblance better than him and figured something out about it’s abilities in the same way that she understood Ruby's semblance better than her. She had plenty of time to observe his semblance up close as he boosted her aura to stave off the virus. Because of that intentionally timed cutaway in the finale, we don’t get to hear her explain herself after her strained “Trust me.” All of that seems really suspicious to me.
Pyrrha Parallel:
Pyrrha and Penny both sacrificed themselves to stop or stall Cinder. Jaune tried to convince the both of them to stop. With Pyrrha, he failed, while with Penny he actively helped her sacrifice herself. Doesn’t make sense for the guy who was determined not to let anyone else do what Pyrrha did, unless of course Penny assured him she’d be alright.
The Moment:
RT including the suicide hotline in the description shows that they're aware that Penny basically committed assisted suicide, seeing it as a noble sacrifice worth doing to save her friends. They're aware, and I believe they're smart enough to condemn that decision to hell and back.
The best way to do that in my opinion is to pull her back into the land of the living and let her witness first hand the consequences of throwing her life away so freely. This would show Penny how her actions affected others so maybe she could learn to truly value herself. To not think herself expendable. It would be bold and unwise to portray this choice as something good, unless it was going to be called upon later and be pointed out for how horrible it really is.
On top of this, Penny was way too content with her death, happy even. There's no way team RWBY is letting her stay content with it. It’s almost as though we're supposed to join Ruby and Co. in calling bullshit on what Penny is saying and doing because no, Penny, this is not how things are meant to work. It's as if Penny was basically saying "I want to die for my friends" because most of the volume had been about everyone else making sure she didn't die. She knows it will hurt them. She knows.
At the peak of it all, a choice like this will totally destroy Ruby. It may very well be her breaking point for Volume 9. Curiously, the moment itself is written like it’s the first choice Penny’s ever made, yet the entire Volume shows this isn’t the case. However, this is the first choice that Penny’s made solely independently and it’s rather pertinent that the choice she makes is a mistake. Outside of giving Winter the Maiden gift and saving the day temporarily, this sacrifice will not have any lasting positive effects. Jaune will be saddled with the grief of killing Penny. Ruby will have to live with losing her best friend and not being able to protect her a second time, and Winter now has the burden of the Winter Maiden abilities, making her a target of Cinder. This is a bad thing, and Penny needs to see the long term consequences.
Transfer of Power:
As we all know, colors in RWBY are really important and get a lot of focus in the show. That means the yellow we see as Penny gives Winter the Maiden Powers was intentional and likely important, no matter how insignificant it may seem. It’s possible that the transfer effect being yellow could have something to do with Jaune’s semblance. When Fria gave the power to Penny, the effect was very much blue, so this transfer should have been green since she was the one giving it this time. The weirdness of this transfer and the focus on color in RWBY really makes it look like something’s up with how that went down.
A little off topic, but Penny saying "I won't be gone, I'll be part of you." makes me think... Winter is smart, so when she gets time to think about what Penny said, maybe she'll arrive at the same question many in the audience came to; if she's literally part of Winter, can they be separated again? If Winter starts questioning that, the possibility of Penny coming back just skyrockets.
Fria actually tells Penny "I'll be gone" before giving her powers up, which is an interesting contrast to Penny telling Winter "I won't be gone". She may have gotten that line from Winter be all philosophical in V7, saying Fria was now a part of Penny, but it hits differently coming from an actual Maiden. S5o it’s possible that Maidens usually actually will be gone, but Jaune's semblance did something to change that.
This could go well with the theory that they won't need to find an aura transfer machine, or build another one, because Jaune will have a semblance evolution allowing him to do the transfer instead. It might actually be that this evolution already happened and the golden light we saw was Jaune transferring penny's aura to Winter in some way?
An observation that I find interesting is when Penny gives winter the powers, not only is the aura yellow but penny completely glows yellow too, and she obviously starts to disappear, but she doesn’t seem to fully disappear, she just glows.
Tumblr media
It's possibly a fading out effect and she does fully fade but animation makes bright light easier, and so we don't actually see her disappear because she's dead and not gone. But it does once again emphasize the color yellow here!
And the color is coming from Penny, it does go up Winter's arm a bit, but Penny is clearly the source. This transfer is so weird and I’m not really sure how to interpret it. There's just actually no reason that we are aware of to make the effect yellow here is the thing. Unless it has something to do with either Jaune or Ambrosius, or potentially a combination of both...
Jaune’s Aura:
The way we see Jaune's aura break in the finale is strange. His aura shouldn't be breaking here. It had been long enough since he was boosting Penny, he's had time to recharge, and it didn't look like it was a strain on him at all. Plus, we know he has a lot of aura, so there probably wasn't too much to recharge in the first place.
Tumblr media
He has a massive amount of aura, it has never broken before as far as I remember. Even if it has though, that doesn’t make this occurrence any less odd. It should absolutely never be a one-hit KO. We didn't see anything that would've drained it, that should not have been enough to break his aura. Unless he did something - something that would require a huge amount of aura - that we just didn't see. That amount of aura drain is far more than just an attempt at healing would do, Jaune absolutely did something with his semblance that took up almost all of his aura.
Pinocchio Allusion:
As any Penny fan knows, her character allusion is Pinocchio, the puppet who became a real boy. Penny deviates from the allusion by having always been a real girl, as Ruby is quick to point out, but she shares many story beats with her original story including multiple deaths. In the original story, Pinocchio dies from being hung by his own strings due to his poor decision making and he dies. Sounds a little familiar, does it not? This is where his tale originally ended. Readers were unsatisfied with this ending however, so the author decided to change the story by reviving Pinocchio and teaching him to be more careful.
Unlike Pinocchio making all the wrong decisions, Penny often makes the right ones, or ones she thinks is right, when concerning others. While usually a good thing, this has meant Penny almost giving herself up multiple times during V8, her last attempt being successful. This is where Penny and Pinocchio begin to share similarities again. They are both very reckless when it concerns themselves. This carelessness comes from different places, but it ends with the same result of them endangering their lives and even sometimes losing them.
In the Disney movie, Pinocchio dies by drowning after going to rescue Geppetto and washes up on the shore (like the beach in V8’s post credit scene). His father is devastated and takes him home to grieve, but as a reward for his selflessness in rescuing his father, the Blue Fairy returns and brings him back to life, as well as granting him humanity. Penny sacrificed her life as well, and it stands to reason that she should be rewarded for it, much like her allusion was.
Penny got her maiden powers from someone with blue aura and then gave her powers to someone with blue aura. So it could be that not only Ambrosius, but Fria and Winter as well represent the Blue Fairy. It could be set up for Winter helping to bring Penny back to life once more. It’s an out there theory I admit, but it’s not outright impossible either. The Blue Fairy in Pinocchio saved him three times that I know of, so RWBY having three representations does make sense.
Geppetto wished for him to live as a real boy, but it depended on what path Pinocchio took. This is very reminiscent of Penny and Pietro. Pietro wants to see her live her life, and surely with him absent in V8C14 that didn't work, despite Penny choosing. Her father did not see her happy enough to live her life, and will only be able to learn her death through others. But Pinocchio's themes were life and being alive. So the likelihood that this is not her end yet is quite high!
A Girl That Fell Through the World:
Penny could be the girl who fell through the world. The girl in the story fled the consequences of a choice. The only person who chose her ultimate fate was Penny. The others were pushed into the void, but she chose to die. The consequence of her choice is Ruby’s grief first and foremost, which Penny won’t see. The girl who fell through the world does come back though, and the world will be changed severely with Penny’s absence. Alternatively, it could also be Penny coming back to Wonderland or wherever they currently are, as long as it’s unrecognizable to her.
What Returning Brings:
Others might say another return would have no story relevant purpose, but I wholeheartedly disagree. Penny gives a profoundly youthful, joyous, and wondrous outlook on the world and story that we hadn't seen since Ruby in Volumes 1-3(not the end), Penny returning would bring a much needed levity back in after the despair they will undoubtedly be going through. While not necessarily a huge thing in most other shows, for RWBY, a show largely about keeping up hope, an ounce of such relief is a necessity.
As much as I hate saying it, Penny’s death does actually make some narrative sense because she had to pass on the Maiden powers. (They could have done this in a number of ways, and I personally think they chose rather poorly, but I digress.) Throughout this whole volume, we can see Penny seemingly being set up to join the main cast, but would have been too strong with the powers. This also accomplishes ridding her of the burden of responsibility that comes with being a Maiden and lets her obtain the freedom that’s so important to her character.
Once she returns, seeing this grief that her actions caused, particularly to Ruby, will get her to realize more that her actions can have serious repercussions. She made a choice, but that choice hurt the people she loves. She must have known that it would but I’m not sure she ever realized just how much.
I didn’t want this post to be heavy in the shipping department, so I largely left it out, but I am going to say this one thing that could have an impact. If Nuts & Dolts is on its way to being canon, which this volume makes it feel highly likely, this could be a catalyst.
It could prompt an arc for the both of them in which Penny learns to live her life fighting for her loved ones, rather than sacrificing it for them. A relationship could potentially start from there. And Ruby seeing Penny learn these things may also help her to stop doing the occasional but very dangerous and reckless things she does. Ruby witnessing Penny coming to terms with what she did to the people that care about her would actually make her stop to think “wait, is this how everyone else would feel if I got myself killed?” That would be a very important moment of character growth for her.
I’m certain there are other significant things that Penny returning can bring to the show. And there are definitely more sections I could add to this. At this point though, assuming anyone even made it this far, I think I’ve been going long enough already. So let’s just roll into the outro!
As painful and hopeless as it seems, I'm choosing to trust them with this because there is absolutely no way they didn't see backlash coming. The way this finale went makes me think that they calculated for backlash and aren’t jumping into something they don’t have a plan to recover from. Whether this trust is unfounded or not remains to be seen, but I don’t think it is currently. I do think, however, that the cause of this backlash was a major misstep. Now that it has happened though, they have a chance to do something good with it.
I know for a lot of you, trust in CRWBY has been damaged, some even irreparably so. And for those that feel this way, I don’t blame you. My trust in them took a hit too, but isn’t broken completely yet. There are many ways that they can bring her back that would make sense with the narrative, they have the ability to make it right, and after going over all of the hints and general weirdness of things many times, I think they will.
I'm feeling pretty confident now and I really didn't expect that to happen at all to be honest. But discussing and theorizing with the discord server seriously helped get my hopes back up surprisingly fast! It’s actually thanks to all of them that this gigantic post even happened! So thanks a ton my fellow Dolts! And a special thanks to!!
