When I went vegetarian a decade ago, I found it pretty painless to pass on most animal-based dishes. Burgers? Plant-based patties were abundant and, for the most part, delicious. Poultry? Easy: vegan chicken nuggets tasted just like the real deal. Pork? I’d never been a huge fan in the first place. My one weakness was sushi. No matter where I looked, I just couldn’t find a satisfying veggie alternative to my favorite form of seafood.
It’s only now, 10 years later, that new food science innovations could finally make the vegan, whole-cut fish of my dreams a reality. This year several alternative protein companies are launching or already offering their first crop of plant-based filets, promising to replicate the taste and texture of real fish. But why is it so hard to make a good piece of vegan salmon in the first place?
It turns out that flavor is the easy part. The rather specific taste common to fresh fish comes mostly from a combination of molecules that scientists already know how to replicate in a lab: long-chain fatty acids, such as omega-3s and omega-6s, which give fish their oily quality and taste, and volatile carbonyls, which lend a lighter, almost melonlike flavor. The real challenge of vegan fish is nailing the mouthfeel. “When the texture is enjoyable, you can take the dish in many directions,” says Guy Vaknin, a chef who heads four vegan restaurants in New York City, including Beyond Sushi. “It’s a great canvas.”
“Fish has a very special texture,” says Atze Jan van der Goot, a food process engineer at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands. Most cuts of fish actually contain several layers of short-fiber muscle, which are held together with thin bands of connective tissue and fat. Within each layer, bundles of microscopic muscle fibers are arranged like the teeth of a comb, all pointing in the same direction. It’s this structure that gives cooked fish its unique flaky quality.
But most processes for making meat substitutes aren’t designed to mimic muscle fiber. Instead they aim for a far simpler consistency: that of ground meat, which can be pressed into burger patty, sausage or nugget form. “I think a lot of meat is consumed via nugget-type products,” van der Goot says, “especially in the U.S.”
The food-processing technique that best achieves nugget texture in vegetarian meat substitutes is called extrusion. It involves grinding raw food material, such as grains, vegetable proteins and various additives, into fine particles and then forcing the resulting “dough” through a tube under high pressure. As it squeezes through this opening, the food slurry is cooked simultaneously by added steam and the heat of its own friction.
Like the Star Trek “replicator,” extruders can squirt out an astronomical range of prepackaged edibles—everything from Cheerios to cheese puffs to chewing gum relies on this process. The catch is that such products all have a similar texture, and they can’t be extruded raw. The process generates so much heat that it denatures, or unravels, most of the available protein molecules in the extruded material, rendering it somewhat shapeless. This is perfectly fine if people want to purchase a vegan crab cake. But it presents a challenge if they’re shopping for a raw fish substitute in order to re-create the experience of, say, biting into uncooked salmon crudo or searing a juicy tuna steak.
Luckily, food scientists are now finding creative new ways to re-create fish’s intricate sheets of parallel muscle fiber. One such technique is called directional freezing. This process capitalizes on the fact that ice tends to form in a certain direction—starting from the coldest point and moving outward. It also tends to adhere to itself, freezing in pure crystals of H2O. Some food researchers have applied directional freezing to blocks of gel made from edible algae. As the gel freezes, the water inside it solidifies into needlelike ice structures, creating a matrix of thousands of tiny tubes. This perforated gel makes a great scaffolding for uncooked faux fish.
That’s the strategy that New School Foods, a Canadian alternative meat start-up, is using to craft its plant-based raw salmon and tuna filets. “It’s basically like a directional sponge,” says Auke de Vries, New School Foods’ lead food materials scientist. Adjusting the size of the gel matrix or tweaking its freezing temperature can yield differently sized or shaped channels, “which is important because that’s the main driver of texture,” de Vries says.
Once the scaffolding is in place, the food science researchers can fill the channels by injecting them with whatever mixture of protein, fat and flavor they want. The options include 100 percent plant-based proteins, such as soy, pea or gluten, and—potentially—actual animal cells cultured in the lab. They can also add volatile flavor compounds that might otherwise break down in a precooked product. “We’re not married to any one ingredient,” says New School Foods founder Chris Bryson.
But there’s more than one way to skin a vegan catfish. Another method gaining traction in the alternative seafood world is 3-D printing. Revo Foods, a plant-based seafood manufacturer in Vienna, uses 3-D food printers to build smoked salmon filets from the ground up with carefully constructed layers of pea protein, algal extracts and omega-3 fatty acids.
If all of these techniques sound elaborate, it’s because they are. But the technology to make vegan meat and seafood is getting cheaper by the day, and its proponents believe the environmental benefits far outweigh the production hassle. “The impact that overfishing and harmful fishing practices have on vulnerable ocean ecosystems is very serious,” says Birgit Dekkers, a food scientist and co-founder of the Dutch plant-based meat company Rival Foods.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, overfishing and habitat destruction have depleted more than one third of global fish stocks. Not only does this wreak havoc on aquatic ecosystems, it can even contribute to global climate change by reducing the number of species available to store carbon. “The overall carbon footprint of ocean trawling is equivalent to the carbon footprint of the entire aviation industry,” Bryson says.
Persuading more people to switch to sustainable plant-based seafood isn’t going to fix climate change. But it could be a step toward ensuring that there are always plenty of fish in the sea.

🥀 randomly, he'll get very aggressive in bed. Biting you till your skin bleeds, slapping your chest and ass, degrading you with the most vilest words. Not to mention he seems to really like choking you till you almost pass out
🥀he doesn't know how to take no for an answer, he'll go scarily quiet and his eyes will turn dull. A complete contrast to how he usually is. Surely a little intimidation will make you change your mind no?
🥀 he's possessive with your time and love. If he ever notices you staring at anyone a little too long, who isn't friends or family he knows of, you bet there'll be missing person posters by the end of the week
🥀he forbids you from going into the basement. Saying it's his private nursery and you should respect his privacy, even if he doesn't respect yours

i've been reading some of your arguments for why you wouldn't be vegan and just wanted to point out that you have a lot of fallacy in your arguments. might want to do a look in there to make sure you are stating your morals/prose properly, and aren't using any arguments that can be easy to shutdown. appeal to tradition. appeal to futility and the argument that personal pleasure(taste etc) allows us to do what we want to others without consent to their bodies is a moral issue i don't think you align with but i could be mistaken. a lot of people who enjoy sex don't rape for example.
i also liked the taste of animal flesh and organs but realized my personal pleasure i got from consuming them pales when it is placed against the value of someone's life and what they have to endure for me to get that on my plate, it's easy to have a disconnect when you don't know. health, animals, earth all benefit from a plant based diet. a plant based diet can feed more people for cheaper, helping to end hunger.
you can say you cook "more vegetarian" but i implore you to continue your growth and align your actions with your morals and continue to strive for a plant based diet in the future. you don't seem like a cruel person but i could be wrong. i've been vegan for 15 years and i cook so many amazing meals and can tell you from experience you don't have to limit yourself to oatmeal. if you have time to watch/listen id implore you to check out gary yourofsky "the most important speech you will ever hear"

Okay. Do you say these same things to vegans that wear cotton? That also kills a lot of animals. Like a lot of them. It hurts entire ecosystems.
There’s no way to buy stuff in our current economy that doesn’t hurt somebody or something. I know how to cook tasty and cheap and mostly healthy meals for myself and the easiest way to do that is with pre-cut veggies, eggs, and the occasional poultry.
Yeah I’m wasting plastic. Yeah I’m eating animals. Vegans eat almonds and quinoa. Those are bad farmed at an industrial scale.
Being an omnivore is natural and I don’t feel bad about it. If you look me in the eyes and ask me if I could kill a chicken the answer is yes. I’ve done extensive research on how to do it safely, actually. If the apocalypse comes I’m raising hens for meat.
Also comparing animal agriculture to rape? Couldn’t find literally anything else to compare it to? Really?

Ashley Graves is impulsive, stubborn, cleverly stupid, and a pain in the ass.
If I had to describe dating Ashley I'd say it's like riding a roller coaster but never knowing when it'll drop.
When you first met her, you were blinded by her beauty (her tits) and decided to walk up to her for a number.
She was flustered that someone was interested in her, sure she's had people walk up to her before, but it was because they were always more interested in her brother than her.
But once she realized you were in it for her, she never let you go again.
It started with frequent house visits. She'd sleep over without asking, and just like a stray-cat that cuddles up to you, you couldn't say no.
She'd try to cook you for you! Every morning where she aserted herself into your day, you'd wake up to the wonderful smell of burning shit. When you went to your kitchen with a loving fire extinguisher in your hands, you'd see she was cooking eggs and some unidentified meat.
You'd walk up behind her and kiss the nape of her neck, never telling her you're only doing this because her hair smells like cherries and if you don't you're pretty sure you'll pass out from the smoke.
"Y/N, why is there a fire extinguisher in your hands?"
"Early Christmas."
"Liar."
Dates were fun, too! Even though you'd organize the actual dates like eating out, going to amusement parsl, carnivals, and the like, her dates would be along the lines of staying at home and cuddling. You might call it boring, but to Ashley, a perfect date would be where you're both left alone with only eachother to give company.
No one, and I mean NO ONE, would be able to see her precious Y/N except her.
And not that you minded anyways, you enjoyed spending time with Ashley, even if half that time was her being exhausting.
Speaking of which, exhausting, you ask? How is little ol' Ashley exhausting?
Be it a nice co-worker, a pleasant stranger, a funny waiter, or even that woman who works at the deli that gives you that cheap vegan processed ham with bacon bits, Ashley hated the fact you even acknowledged them.
It often became her favorite topic to annoy you with.
While cuddling on the couch (iykyk), Ashley began to look at you with intense eyes. You knew what these eyes meant. It was a warning sign that she was about to ask you something that could potentially piss you off. Of course, she didn't care about that part, all you needed to know was she was going to ask and you'd better be honest.
"N/M, do you love me?"
"Sure I do, you're my girlfriend after all."
Ashley wrapped her arms around your neck a little tighter, "So then," her face darkened, "would you ever cheat on me?"
You sighed, this line of questioning was becoming less and less of the 'would you love me if I was a worm' deal and more of the 'whose that bitch you were talking to' deal.
"No, Ashley, I wouldn't. Why would you feel the need to ask me that?"
Ashley raised her head from your chest and opened her mouth, her final statement ready to fire,
"So then why do you still look at other people if you would never cheat?" Her eyes narrowed on you.
You groaned and rubbed your temples, "Jesus Ashley, now I can't even have simple eye contact with people?"
She blew a breath of annoyance, "why would you even make eye contact?! I'm the only one you should be looking at, N/M!"
You went to push Ashley off of you, already sick of her shit.
"No! Do you even still love me?! All you do is go to work, go to school, hang out with your stupid friends, and ignore me!"
"I'm not doing this with you AGAIN, Ashley! Just because I know or talk to other people does not mean I'm screwing them! Jesus Ashley, you would think we'd be over this by now..."
Ashley pouted and blinked the tears in her eyes away, "...fine. leave me then, see if I care."
She sits up and goes to the opposite end of the couch.
"You're sitting on my feet, Ashley."
Ashley turned her head away and ignored you.
You hated it when she got her way, but you also couldn't stand to see her so upset. After all, she was only upset because she missed you.
Sighing with defeat you said softly, "I'm sorry I don't pay enough attention to you, Leyley. Life distracts me sometimes, but that doesn't mean I don't still love you. This weekend I'll cancel with my friends and we can go on a date. "
She hummed, "id rather we stay in and watch a movie."
"Which movie?" You coax your girlfriend for a smile,
"...Hypergore Splatterbrains 4," She looked at you and grinned.
"There's my pretty girl," you wrapped an arm around her waist, "alright, you happy now? Will you stop bitching about people in my life who I will NEVER cheat on you with?"
She brought a finger to her bottom lip, "Nah, maybe a kiss will convince me?"
She looked at you with a devious smirk, you sighed. "Cmere you," Ashley giggled and jumped on top of you, sharing a loving kiss.
Yeah, Ashley is exhausting.
But in a way, you're happy she's yours. You couldn't be happier, even if her cooking skills are shit, she's a tad bit possessive, and she leaves passive aggressive notes in your lunchbox when you go to work.
You love her either way.
"Hey N/M?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you love me?"
You sighed with content and wrapped your arms around her waist, "Yes Leyley, I love you. Do you love me?"

the american diet is vacuous, built around expensive staples and cheap filler. people seek out complete nutrition to the best of their ability without even consciously realizing they're doing it, which means if you're too poor to afford the shit that makes meals appropriate both in terms of calories and micronutrients, your choices are serious vitamin deficiencies or eating a thousand or more calories a day than you need.
being poor makes you fat because the alternative is death. vitamin deficiencies make you weaker, sicker, prone to injury, inflict full-spectrum degradation on the body and brain. compared to that the side effects of being overweight are pretty mild; choosing between a 4000-kcal diet which at least carries a pittance of most dietary minerals and a 2000-2500-kcal diet which does not should not be hard, and in fact the health industry tacitly or overtly encouraging the latter over the former is malpractice.
incidentally, if you want practical advice from this? if at all possible get your vitamin levels checked regularly (blood draws are usually sufficient for this) and educate yourself on which vitamin/mineral supplements are necessary and which ones are snake oil. learn the signs of common micronutrient deficiencies (D3, B12, iron, magnesium, calcium) and try to supplement them if at all possible. and learn how to store and take supplements - iron is poorly bioavailable except in heme form (usually animal-sourced, vegan heme iron is available but more expensive), D3 degrades rapidly in sunlight and needs to be kept in a UV-opaque container until you take it, etc.
a system that looks at a generation of fat kids and scary-skinny kids and prescribes discipline and surgery instead of better childhood nutrition is radically broken, possibly beyond repair.

Was like "oh sweet with discounts the simulation meat is almost as cheap as the real meat" and realized that we were pretty far off with the whole "poor people eating meat flavoured Soy Chunks while the wealthy have real meat" trope in cyberpunk. It feels like we might get animal tissue synthetic meat before vegan substitutes reach price parity with animal meat given how that's going.
I feel like a lot of that discrepancy is just demand though, like, there's no way this stuff is actually more expensive, it's not even the fancy stuff with careful synthetic flavours it's basically vegetable protein and wheat derived binders plus spices.
Factory farming fits in really well to Cyberpunk actually.

Separatist Swaps: Home Cook Youtubers
This week’s theme from @radblrthemeweeks is  Separatist Swaps (suggesting equivalent female artists/musicians/creators/etc to support as well as or instead of men)
I’ll admit I don’t read or watch TV much, but I do watch a lot of YouTube.  I added some of my favorite channels to this post in the past (X).  This will be an expanded list in no particular order.
Initially, I wanted to compare each channel to a similar male-led one, but I opted to just summarize what I think is unique about each one.
Food and Cooking
Note: I prefer vegan/plant based cooking, so I’ll specify which of these channels are exclusively vegan.
Cheap Lazy Vegan (V) Rose makes a lot of Korean food, but the ingredients are pretty easy to find at a regular grocery store.  Many of her videos feature high protein, nutritious meals that can be ready in 20 minutes or less.  I’ve also found her recipes to be shockingly simple without getting boring.
Rainbow Plant Life (V) Nisha is one of my favorite youtubers.  Her recipes are a bit more involved that Rose’s, but I’ve made several of them myself so they’re still approachable for a home cook.  Her recipes are primarily American or Indian inspired with advice for meal prep and saving time.
Pick Up Limes (V)  Sadia is a nutritionist, so her recipes tend to be wholesome and nutritious.  However, she still has a lot of recipes for comfort food and desserts.  I don’t make her recipes as often, but her videos are enjoyable.
Sierra Ann  I like her easy “recipes” (more like meal ideas), but she sometimes posts about fashion as well.  Her content is more akin to a vlog than concrete recipes or cooking tips, so I find myself watching her YT shorts more than her longform content.
Lisa Nguyen  I’ve only ever seen her YT shorts so idk if she makes longer videos or not.  She does instant ramen challenges where she tries different brands or ramen hacks.
Morgan Drinks Coffee  Morgan releases a mix of recipes and other content like appliance and coffee reviews.  She has a lot of advice for people just getting into coffee or those who want some fresh ideas.
Inga Lam  When I made the other post she was still working for Buzzfeed, but she recently decided to focus on her own channel.  I’m not sure what she has planned but she’s very creative and ambitious.
How to Cook That  Ann Reardon mostly makes baking videos, but I prefer her debunking videos.  She seems to have shifted more toward debunking dangerous videos in general, not just food related videos.
June Xie from Delish  June makes long videos creating a week’s worth of meals, often on a budget.  My main complaint about her content is that some of the food she makes is either not for everybody or uses ingredients that aren’t readily accessible, like produce from specialty shops.  However, that also means her recipes tend to be unique and interesting.  Her boyfriend also comes off as kinda rude, but he’s only there when they’re tasting the food.
Beryl Shereshewsky  People from around the world submit ways they eat a particular food, like instant ramen or onions, and Beryl makes and reviews them.  These videos are helpful when I feel stuck in a routine and want to see ingredients from a different perspective.
Alix Traeger  Alix used to work for Tasty, but now she makes content on her own channel with her girlfriend Zoya.  Zoya is Persian, so it’s been fun watching Alix try to master Persian dishes.

Girl in the Woods  I just found her channel last week, but it was too interesting to leave out.  Usually I don’t like homesteading YouTubers because they focus on the aesthetics, but I’ve actually learned a lot about off-grid living just from watching a few of her videos.
HannahLeeDuggan  She bought a property with a run-down cabin a few years back.  Before that, she was living in a van and selling handmade clothes online.  I can’t say I’ve learned much about van life or homesteading from her videos, but I haven’t given her a fair chance yet.  Last I checked, she was planning on documenting the process of fixing up and weather-proofing her cabin.
Learn Something
Answers in Progress  This channel is run by three people, two of which are women.  They answer random questions with a surprising amount of research and interviews with professionals.
The Take The Take claims to be “ the leading female-led entertainment analysis channel on TV, Movies & Pop-Culture”
Cheyenne Lin  Cheyenne focuses on feminist analysis and film analysis through a feminist lens.
Jessica Chou  She isn’t active anymore but she has some basic videos on car maintenance.
Micarah Tewers Micarah sews a combination of beautiful and insane clothes.  I’ve never tried to recreate any of her patterns but she’s so entertaining to watch.  She made fake eyelashes out of her dog’s hair and that’s not even the craziest thing she’s done on her channel.
Since this is intended to be a discussion, I’m also including a list of channels I’d like to find that are usually male dominated.
Game News and Lore I like watching lore videos for games like the Fallout series, RDR2, and TES.  So far, the only female gamers I’ve seen on YT are overly sexualized and don’t make the content I’m looking for.
Food Science There are a few channels that break down food science like Adam Ragusea and Kenji Lopez-Alt.  The closest female equivalent is How to Cook That, but it’s not quite what I’m looking for and she primarily posts baking videos.
I’ve been watching a lot of Ethan Chlebowski’s videos lately because he makes meal formulas and focuses on high protein meals.  If anyone knows who I’m talking about, I’d love to see female-run channels that make similar content.
Gardening and Homesteading  I want channels that actually teach me something new and don’t focus on pseudoscience or religion.

Old man Terry slipping lactation pills in beloved's drinks and food and relishing in the way her body changes and her breasts become heavier, fuller, sore, bigger. I think he would do it as a means to control beloved and to obviously drink from it daily, believing it has benefits or something. If it's good for a newborn, it's even better for an aging, power hungry Billionaire hellbent on quite literally latching unto and sucking dry whatever controlled and highly vetted source of health, longevity and strength he can like a vampire, and what a more fitting place for it to stem from than his very own beloved? Milk. It does a body good. A famous commercial from the 80's and 90's might come to Terry's mind as the idea occurs to him and of course the maintenance of a physique like his well into his sixth decade being alive doesn't come cheap (cheap, and not in the material sense, because Terry's more than willing to dish out cash) in fact, utilizing basic logic, it would be more and more complicated with each passing year; constant training, dedication, therapy, steam baths, devotion to the sport, very specific dietary choices. Yesterday, it was vegan screws and salads, but he so happens to find beloved's milk infinitely more appetizing, inviting and decadent to the degree he can and would induce their lactation through specific pills. Crushed in meals, crushed in beverages, crushed in a fine wine as they toast together over an intimate, romantic fine dinner for two. How very unassuming --- but he's here with an agenda. Terry Silver not only seeks rejuvenation because youth is the only thing money cant buy according to his own words, but he wants to consume in the general sense of the word. Consume beloved until they flow through his bloodstream, his organism, infused with his very bones; the things he breaks stone slabs with with such ease. The things he fights with. When he's in the midst of combat, it's like beloved's right there, alive and infused inside of his knuckles. You are what you eat, after all.
And of course, being Californian upper crust, he'd hear and see things.
He'd hear and see things for decades --- no doubt having participated too.
Celebrities eating their baby's placenta, Gwyneth Paltrow's beauty regimen that includes bee stings, Sandra Bullock's Hemorrhoid Eye Cream, Cate Blanchett's Foreskin Facials and Demi Moore's Leech Therapy. Hollywood's right next door. It would make Terry Silver's propensity for the strange and unusual almost seem commonplace; him drinking beloved's breast milk? Just another Wednesday in The Valley.
But, he cares. Of course he cares with every fiber of his being and his big, black heart. He tracks every change, every reaction, every sore and every bit of swelling surrounding beloved's body, perfectionist, control freak that he is. Their every complaint. Every bit of fluctuating transformation. Every bit of pain. Hell, he'd even bring in (a bribed off) doctor or ten to regularly check on beloved and quell any fears they might have by assuring them this is totally normal. It happens when someone's young and fertile; it is simply their concern he isn't truly surprised by because everything is going according to his plan and if he feigns anything, it's mostly innocence. But, Terry's far from innocent. This is him desiring to be one with beloved in every sense, consuming them, dominating them, wishing to take whatever he can from their youth and in equal measure, no doubt in mind it's a fetish too because the exchange simply turns him on. He is a dirty old man and he deliberately plays into it and just how very dirty and debauched he can be and that all by itself serves as a gleeful kink precisely because it's total filth. Total filth that totally amuses him. Perhaps even more so that he can expertly get beloved to actually allow him to drink from their breasts of their own volition to alleviate their pressure and pain they're feeling and have them thank him no less once it actually helps, perhaps utilizing a few well-learned massage moves of his as a gateway to everything that comes later. Oh, Terry the kindhearted saint, truly! What's best, beloved consented to everything of their own free will. Well, with some conditioning, white lies (in Terry's opinion) and slightly omitted details involved in the process, of course.
But, the ends justify the means.
Sooner or later, he'll sell the story to them in its entirety and have them agree to it regardless.
His good, perfect little calf indeed.
Not entirely out of the question he wont bottle samples and save them up behind a locked glass veneer in a specially refrigerated portion of his private wine cellar only he can drink from.

The Moral Complexity of a Meat Consumption

I said it before and I will say it again: There definitely is a subsection of the Solarpunk movement, who keeps going on about the future having to be "all vegan". In any Solarpunk space you will find some of this sort. Heck. You will also find folks in anarchist spaces, who will go: "Oh, you are an anarchist and still eat meat? So you do believe in hierarchies! Because you see yourself as higher as an animal!"
These days I am mostly ignoring those people, because I know that you really just cannot win those arguments with them.
Outside of chicken I do not really like meat. I do not like the taste or texture. But if I completely cut it out of my diet, I will get sick. Tried it several times. It did not work out. So, I cut it down to two days a week, which keeps my body in a somewhat sustainable equilibrium.
For me the issue is in how my body metabolizes certain aspects of food. But a lot of chronically ill and disabled people will have to eat meat and cannot cut it out of their diet. Maybe they cannot eat a lot of other proteins due to their allergies. Maybe there is stuff in plants that they cannot metabolize. And maybe they are autistic and literally can only eat like five different things. There are plenty of reasons people might just not get around it.
However... I also look at a lot of folks in the modern world eating cheap meat every single day, and I am shaking my head. Sure, some of them might need to eat meat daily, but let's be honest: Most people actually do not. Most people would be perfectly fine to cut down on the meat and only eat meat once or twice a week.
I personally absolutely do not see anything wrong with killing and eating animals per se. Because that is just how the world works. Some animals kill, other animals are eaten. Humans are just another animal.
What I do find issue with, however, is the industrial meat industry. The thing that makes it possible in the first place for folks to eat meat every day. Big plants where hundreds, if not thousands of animals are being kept, with only ridiculous amounts of antibiotics keeping the animals from getting too sick. With slaughtering plants that process hundreds or thousands of animals each day. That is just... Not how it should go.
I personally... since I cut down the meat in my diet, I can afford to actually just eat the free range animals that got to frolick out on the pasture for their entire life. Because frankly, yeah, it is double the price of the alternative, but... So what? For two times a week it works fine. (Also, frankly, there is less water in the meat and the meat actually has better taste and texture.)
So, you know, for me it would be totally fine if there just was no cheap meat at all and all meat was pasture frolicking animals. But even here it gets complicated of course.
Because... Well, there are poor people, who also need to eat meat for health reasons. And what are they gonna do? After all being poor makes you more likely to be disabled - and hence require stuff like that.
And it is exactly the big issue. And frankly... I honestly do not think there is any proper solution to this under capitalism. Because more than anything... capitalism sucks.

something interesting about people arguing that boycotting mcdonalds is really easy and how you don't need mcdonalds is that these are the same people that argue that being able to buy mcdonalds meals is necessary for the survival of poor people. like I regularly see people argue that their dollar menu is cheap and makes it possible for poor folk to eat 'well'. so like if that was true (which, lets be honest, the people arguing this have never been poor a day in their lives are you kidding me I couldn't afford to spend a dollar on only 6 nuggets that's not even a full meal and has limited nutritional value. I would rather spend a dollar on a pack of pasta and at least get multiple meals out of it. but that's besides the point) then trying to tell people that they are being selfish if they can't afford to eat something other than mcdonalds (again, we know that mcdonalds is not the poor persons paradise they want us to think it is but I'm using their logic) is so messed up. shaming people who (by their own arguments) cannot afford to eat anything else for not giving up their (theoretical) only source of food.
the contradiction of their world views is so confusing like they are out here arguing that vegans are classist for demanding people give up mcdonalds for the sake of others then turning around and doing the same thing. I'm all for voting with my money but unlike these people I actually apply it to all aspects of my beliefs and activism not just when it's convenient for me/my message damn.
I've been doing this for a long time but it is still quite jarring to see this play out, over the past few weeks especially. The sudden widespread acknowledgement of the power of boycott, the rapid development in understanding of what it's aims are, and the frankly miraculous sudden realisation that asking someone to boycott a brand to the extent that they're able to is not actually classist, or racist, or whatever else they've decided boycotting animal products is for the last decade of discourse.
I am also depressingly certain that as soon as the current boycotts leave the media cycle and people stop talking about them, they'll go right back to 'no ethical consumption under capitalism tho' and insisting that individual purchase decisions or collective boycotts don't make any difference.
This is something we should be used to, we have all observed the fact that people (and especially leftists) don't apply their existing logic or values to animal agriculture. So much of it really is just talk, because as soon as you ask someone to examine their own beliefs and how they themselves may be contributing to worker exploitation, animal exploitation and environmental destruction, they slip about six grades in basic comprehension and go back to spewing rhetoric that they themselves would laugh at in any other context.

I'll freely admit that industrialized animal agriculture - at least as it exists in the world today - is, quite frankly, deeply cruel. in the case of cattle in particular, it's also extraordinarily wasteful - though this is less of a concern when it comes to, say, poultry. at the same time, I think individual consumer choices have negligible impact on the meat industry as a whole; with that in mind, I rank the flavor and nutritional value of meat & seafood above whatever I might achieve by cutting them out entirely.
that being said, I tend to consider veganism kind of silly in comparison to "ovo-lacto vegetarianism." my reasoning for this is simple: have you ever stopped to really consider how fucking good eggs are? they're the perfect food. high in protein, plus a healthy but not overwhelming amount of fat. a distinctly unique yet mild flavor profile makes them a great addition to a massive variety of dishes, and that's not even touching on how useful they are for baking. they're also dirt cheap and chickens pump them out like crazy. if my life depended on it I could maybe give up meat but I absolutely could not give up meat and eggs and dairy. the very thought makes me shudder.
I did manage to cut myself down to near vegetarianism - one to three meals containing meat in a given week, usually on the lower end - for a while in college. but I pretty much did that just as a test of willpower, to see if I could commit to it. and after two years I was like "alright yeah I think that point is proven" and went back to eating Whatever (until I converted to Judaism and cut out pork, shellfish, etc). this isn't really related to the actual Merits of eating meat vs. not eating meat, I just thought it was a fun fact.
