Just Show Up...
The singular factor under your control is your consistency in showing up, day after day. It’s not a magic solution, nor a quick fix, or a shortcut. But it’s the fundamental principle for building anything substantial.
We’re often fixated on immediate results, on instant gratification, on the allure of overnight success. We expect every piece of our work to go viral, and we’re disheartened when…

I want to plan out a bunch of content to post online (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok) for a few months before posting them all spaced out, like 2 or 3 a week. One project can stretch out to make multiple posts on each platform, so If I post twice a week for a year that is 104 posts, if I make 4 posts on each platform from one project (being generous since number of posts per project will vary) I will have to have 26 projects
If I then make 2 projects per week, it will are 13 weeks or about 3 months to get these projects done and a bit longer to make the posts and videos.
This is a very unrealistic goal

One thing I’ve noticed about people in or entering their 30s is they don’t make as many compromises anymore. If someone doesn’t meet them halfway, is not up to standard, is just not where they’re needed to be, they’re just like “ok cool” and they move on from the person. Which is not to say they’re less empathetic or understanding, but more that they have learned that time is their most prized possession and they’re not willing to make massive compromises on it. They are not obsessed w the idea of fixing someone (bc the concept of fixing a person doesn’t really exist). They simply move on to someone who is up to par. I want that. I want to always move w the awareness that time is my most priceless belonging and I can never buy it back. Ever. So I have to use it wisely

I find it kind of charming that, since most of the Hermits don't use their real names, the ones that are less familiar with him seem to tend to call him a nickname based on SmallishBeans, rather than calling him Joel. It's just charming to me because they're doing what they're used to and respecting him and his privacy the way they know how

be critical of yourself in a way that lifts you up, which means: catch yourself when you're thinking mean things about yourself / correct yourself when you're imagining what negative opinions others might have about you / encourage yourself to do better next time in a gentler and more optimistic way / never strive for more without acknowledging how far you have already come. it's okay to be nice to yourself.

there's something deeply gutting about being a writer right now. watching studio execs brag about starving people like you out of your very house just to not pay you anything above the pennies you currently make. watching some people cheer over AO3 being targeted for a DDOS attack. the complete lack of profitability of writing commissions or writing in general in transformative spaces, especially in contrast to fanart. the pivot of so many social media platforms to be video and image based near-exclusively.
I don't know. it just makes me sad to know that the hobby that kept me alive while growing up homeschooled with dial-up internet and local antenna TV... is only ever gonna be a side job with minimal engagement. I know this site is good about supporting libraries and the concept of books but, do me a favor? Reach out to a writer friend you know. Leave a comment on your last five read stories on your favorite website.
Tell us you care.
