Honeyfoot had always been instant he wasn’t the child-caring sort… but fate had other plans, so it seemed. Still, Phloxkit had an insatiable appetite, and with the plains of NettleClan’s territory burned away as they were, hunting on familiar territory was near fruitless.
Still, she was fed, even if he could feel his stomach rumbling.
Tumblr media
He’d gone back to the clan’s home, of course- more in hope than expectation. It had all been ash, save for the remains of his clanmates.
He left them where they were, hoping the smoke had gotten them, rather than the heat and roaring terror.
Phloxkit could learn the truth when she was older. Perhaps they could reclaim this old camp, once prey had returned to the area, and the autumn and winter had passed.
Tumblr media
They set out days later, a series of temporary nests in the grass serving as their homes. Phlox’s little legs got tired… often, but it was forgiven especially when a stand of stones, strewn about with saplings, was found by the pair; found and found to be uninhabited, even better. The ground was warm, and the tiredness of the last few days caught up with them…
Honeyfoot didn’t even complain with Phloxkit snuggled up against his belly, pronouncing his fur most comfortable. Idly he wondered how she was avoiding overheating like this.
Trying a different format today, where I put the text on the images instead of going purely for prose … please let me know which you prefer! Or maybe if you’d want text on images only?

The blurple butterfly bush is blooming! It really is blurple, too, because there’s a magenta pink version and a dark purple version as well, so this is right in the middle. Neirin loves the color and the sweet smell of the flowers, but what he loves even more is how it attracts insects! In addition to butterflies, the candy scent attracts honey bees and bumbles. Neirin was lucky to see a couple of them, and they both had big collections of pollen sticking to their wee bee leggies. =)

@shinyhappygoth submitted: First instar? 👀
Tumblr media
A lovely chrysalis and some busy friends!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A few friends in need of ID! All but the last one were encountered in Connecticut; the last was in Maryland.
I'd say second instar on the monarch! Hello to all the bees :) First fellow is a ladybug pupa, probably an Asian lady beetle. The second is an Oriental beetle, and the last is a red-headed bush cricket :)

Buddleja davidii (Butterfly bush) and Apis mellifera (Western honey bee)
Globalisation
Whenever I’m visited by out-of-town friends in the summer, I usually take them down to the beach to get a bit of that West Coast vibe. The plant community is the very picture of globalisation because the only native plant that I see in abundance is the common horsetail (Equisetum), and that doesn’t count because horsetails are found everywhere except Antarctica.
This species of Butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii) is originally from central China and parts of Japan. It arrived in European gardens in the 1890′s and was already being declared an ‘invasive weed’ in Britain in 1922. Here it prospers on the other side of the Pacific Ocean, “duking it out” with a host of other introduced plant species.
Butterfly bush is often grown as a garden ornamental because it is attractive to butterflies. However, this particular ‘garden escapee’ is being pollinated by a honey bee. Butterflies are sensitive to habitat destruction, pesticide use and, increasingly, climate change. As local gardeners, we don’t see that many butterflies around these days but these honey bees are part of the problem too.
In 2021 the global honey market was worth 8 billion dollars with over 94 million registered bee hives world-wide. The number of hives is expected to grow another 8% in the next five years. Each bee hive can consume 250 kilos of nectar and 50 kilos of pollen a year, and this represents enormous competition to native pollinators of all kinds, especially bumblebees and butterflies. Some jurisdictions are now considering restricting the number of honey bee hives to assist conservation efforts and increase biodiversity.

a coral room
sunset (from a sky of honey)
links for those asking about why I named my series the way I did — Kate Bush’s album Aerial (and its b-side, a sky of honey) is the reason.
In this album, she expertly reveals the bittersweet mourning for a better time and the love that persists for one’s children. I just felt like it captured Bruce’s mindset so well. Also it has 9/11 references which also went well with BVS in my mind.

Currently at war with my elderly ex-stray cat, who after a few weeks of staying in her spot on the bed (bed's a double, her spot is on the bottom left) she's suddenly decided she wants to sit on or against me because I'm warm (I literally put a hot pod in her spot and a corner of the heat blanket). She cannot sleep on my side, because I have cfs and it's painful and causes cramps if she sits on me or stops me from being able to move.
AND she gets pissed at me if I move and hisses and tries to bite if I pick her up to move her!
