~ Rainbow Dee
🌈🌸Rainbow is a celestial waddle dee, she was born with insanely powerful magic. The ancients knew predicted the day she came to Popstar and are searching for her to contain her power and possibly seal her away like what they did with Sir Galacta Knight. Meta Knight won’t let that happen he will protect and keep her safe. Meta Knight, Sword, and Blade found her one night crashed landed around Orange Ocean’s Seaside. They all saw a bright strange rainbow shooting star, went out to investigate and there ya go they found Rainbow Dee and Meta Knight adopted her. Her personality is like similar to mine hehe she’s really smart, overthinks stuff at times, and energetic. Dedede loves looking after her whenever Meta is not around and the Meta-Knights as well ;w; Rainbow’s first words were Mimi cuz she tried to say Meta haha xD

DAY 5502
Jalsa, Mumbai                 Mar 10,  2023                Fri  7:58 PM
And we have lost another ..
A delightful company, a most accomplished artist and in the prime of his career ..
Satish Kaushik ..
Working with you was so inspiring .. and such a learning  ..
My prayers .. 🙏🚩
🪔 .. March 11 .. birthday of Ef Shirel Segev .. our wishes to you from this Family of the Ef here .. welcome to the 20s club .. happiness to you .. and may you have your Mother's Desi Soul .. 🎶💃🏻 .. and surpass her .. 😁 ..
Ahead of time and place .. !
And the issue with ‘ahead of time’ is often the not desired results .. come in time the others do not .. do not come in time get pasted for being late .. ahead of time is desirable, but has its hindered complications ..
Like today the day has barely finished and much of what was needed to be put has been waited upon with expectation .. if it does not come , it does not come .. the writing, if one can call that writing , is insipid and without any life  - as though it is .. 🤣 ..
But an effort shall be made ..
I do believe and have always believed, the immense talent that resides in our Ef .. in writing in aesthetic art work , in compiling visuals , just about everything ..
I never had opportunity to speak about it but it must be noted that it was ever in my mind .. and I have privately either shared or talked about it to friends and family .. in great admiration ..
The comments , the drawings , the pictures and what inspires them to present .. all in such dedicated love and admiration for me ..
For this I am truly indebted ..
I do hope that someday, I get an opportunity to be able to collectively present this to all , and give the immense credit where it is so due ..
I have at times used what they have done or written or expressed and put it within quotes to show that it is borrowed and have given an indication of the who when and where ..
Do not stop to do this .. there is a great admirer that reads and registers all and is most grateful for this sincerity ..
I shall return hopefully .. but if I do not .. rest well .. and my love ❤️

The Tiny Peeta Diaries: Nighttime-aimmyarrowshigh (ao3) Summary: Peeta, freshly five years old, lay wide awake in bed, shaking his knees and too excited to sleep. He'd stayed awake to hear the big clock at the Justice Building chime midnight -- it was his birthday today! -- but now he stayed awake because of the looming knowledge of what awaited downstairs. It was jam day at the Mellark Bakery, and Peeta wanted nothing more than rhubarb on rye. The Tiny Peeta Diaries: School Time-aimmyarrowshigh (ao3) Summary: Peeta's blue eyes widened. Two cupcakes! He should probably tell his brother, since they weren't supposed to eat the pastries themselves, but… two cupcakes! Just for him! He'd never had two cupcakes before! School really wasn't so bad after all if it meant he got two cupcakes. The Tiny Peeta Diaries: Summertime-aimmyarrowshigh (ao3) Summary: Peeta tentatively stepped out into the yard. He glanced back at the door. Then he took another step. Three steps away from the stoop. He was free. The Weather Outside Is Frightful (But The Fire Is So Delightful)-albinokittens300 (ao3) Summary: Katniss wakes up to winter and struggles. Luckily, she is not alone to face her sorrow. THG Drabbles-albinokittens300 (ao3) Summary: A place for all of my Hunger Games writing less than 500 words or so to live! All are canon compliant unless stated otherwise, and not in chronological order. Just a fun dump for all of the snippets of THG! Everlark, and lots of it. ALL chapters will have a small description of what's in it. Till Human Voices Wake Us-atetheredmind (ao3) Summary: Peeta and Katniss share a moment at the edge of the world during the Victory Tour. Time to Forgive-cd291104 (ff.net) Summary: "It's been 20 years and she still takes my breath away." One shot set after the epilogue of MockingJay so potential spoilers. It's been 20 years since the rebellion and Gale is looking for forgiveness from Peeta and Katniss. Travel Woes-albinokittens300 (ao3) Summary: A morning on a train back to District 12 for Gale and Johanna that does not go as planned. Or, alternatively: Johanna winds up sick, and Gale makes it his problem. Two-dracoisalooker76 (ao3) Summary: A few short moments with the Mellarks as they become a family of four. Set in the "Do Not Go Gentle"/"They Shall Not Break" Universe. Modern AU Oneshot With Thanks and Blessings-HGfanonezillion (ao3) Summary: The Mellarks partake in the traditions passed down to honor the dead. A Halloween/Samhain one shot.

February 14, 2020 (Valentine’s Day)
> This year, once again, I’m making chocolates after Kanato has come begging to me in tears.
> Time after time…Why do I have to do such a thing?”
> Oh well, it’s fine. Now that I’ve made the promise, I should hurry up and get started on it. I might as well challenge myself this year and make some chocolate lollies.
> Takoyaki has nothing to do with it. (@Ayato)
March 14, 2020 (White Day)
> I received some sweets from Kanato, miracles do happen after all.
> I wonder if he’s returning the favor of Valentine’s Day. I’m surprised he has this side to him.
> It’s a rare occasion, so I’ll give them a taste. I’ll hand them out to the other brothers as well.
> Could I have a minute?
> Oh dear, your expression became tense as soon as you saw me. I reached out to you, wanting to thank you for the chocolates from the other day, but did you think I was going to scold you, perhaps?
> Of course, there is plenty I want to tell you. However, that is only because I feel so strongly for you.
> Simply put, there might be times where I accidentally end up doting on you a little too much. It is embarrassing to admit, but that is just how much I love you.
April 1, 2020 (April Fools)
> For God’s sake, that man...He simply cannot act without having to show off.
> I’m talking about the eldest son of the Mukami family. He made a big deal out of it and even published a public announcement, believing their own lies are the most humorous. Showing off how cooperative his younger brothers are.
> Simply ridiculous.
> [Only today] We shall be hosting a haunted house at our manor. It is called ‘The Sakamaki House of Horrors’. The demons living at this manor shall try and lure you into a dark world of fear. Please do not hesitate to take on the challenge. For more information, click the link below. --> dialover.net. #SakamakiHouseofHorrors #AprilFools
> Please be cautious when setting foot inside the kitchen. One, two...You might hear the sound of someone counting plates. When you listen till the very end...Fufu, what comes next is a secret. #AprilFools
April 28, 2020
> The fact that a mere servant such as yourself dares trouble me is simply unacceptable.
> How could you nod off in the middle of your studies? It seems like you need to be punished.
April 29, 2020
> I wish you would at least keep quiet during the commute to school.
May 5, 2020
> Just as Subaru informed me, illegal footage of us is going around.
> Let us deal with it at once. I simply cannot look past being exposed in such a fashion.
> However, before that.
> It seems like Ayato and the others have been pulling all sorts of mischief behind my back. I shall take care of that first.
May 27, 2020
> Oh dear? What seems to be the matter? Can no longer stand? Your punishment is not over yet.
> I shall give you the same stimulus as before. It seems like you simply do not comprehend unless I teach it directly to your body after all.
> Although, I am doubtful how effective it will be on someone like you, who can find joy not only in pleasure, but in pain as well.
> What a shameless woman you are.
> You should feel ashamed of yourself. I shall not let you go, until you fix that attitude, understood?
Juy 7, 2020 (Tanabata)
> I pray that one day, we will have less bills for reparation costs to pay. #TanabataWishes
July 20, 2020
> Who is the one who swapped Kanato’s glasses with my own?
> Good grief. What a ridiculous prank.
August 29, 2020 (Birthday)
> Are you satisfied with today? Well, I can tell just by looking at your face. Good grief, how come you seem to be enjoying it more than me every year? Seems like you are in need of a punishment to teach you some composure? Fufu, let us go to my room then. Even though my birthday has ended, I shall not let you leave my side.
October 14, 2020
> Shuu, when are you finally going to wake up? (@Shuu)
> Good grief. Fine, be late for school then if that’s what you wish.
October 20, 2020 (DL x Mayla Classic)
> Do you have a minute?
> On today’s grocery run, I came across something which might suit you at an accessory store which happened to catch my attention. Us brothers shall gift it to you.
> Yes, us brothers. I decided to purchase it after sharing a photograph with the others and asking for everyone’s opinion. Will you accept it?
> I am glad to hear that. Well then, please come and get it yourself.
> Why of course. Who said we would spoil you that much? I placed it in the room where I have frequently punished you, so please go ahead.
> Now where could that be, I wonder?
October 31, 2020 (Halloween)
> You truly have a particular fondness for holidays, no? Well, this is nothing new, so I shall be so generous to keep you company. Well then, between my baked sweets and these fangs, which one do you prefer?
November 20, 2020
> Seems like we’re actually in for a peaceful day for once.
> I shall make use of this opportunity to enjoy a cup of this high-quality tea I purchased the other day.
> I suppose I shall pour her a cup later as well.
December 18, 2020
> You broke the plate because your hand cramped from the cold? Did you truly believe I would fall for such an obvious excuse? Seems like I will have to teach you a thing or two about how to handle silverware...However, before that, show me whether you’ve hurt yourself or not. Come on, your hand.
December 19, 2020
> I suppose it doesn’t hurt to take a small break on the way back from shopping every now and then. For our beverages...How about this drink? The deep blue color is very alluring, and I am especially curious about the spicy aftertaste it is said to provide. Seeing as you still like to cause me trouble, I’d dare argue a little ‘kick’* is exactly what you need at times.
-> Literally he says that he needs to give you ‘the whip’ every now and then. However, ‘muchi’ is also a way to refer to punishment in general in Japanese, coming from the idom ‘ame to muchi’ which is the Japanese equivalent of ‘carrot and stick’.
December 24, 2020 (Christmas)
> Merry Christmas. May I assist you in preparing the dinner? I assume it is uncommon for me to make such an offer, but I figured that today, it would be nice if we could do something together.

Monday 17 March 1834
6 10/.. 11 50/..
L Vc L
soft, hazyish, finish morning Fahrenheit 54°. at 7 10/.. - out at 7 1/4 - at Charles H-'s [Howarth's] and John Oates's to tell both about having cut hollies too close - breakfast with my father in 1/2 hour at 8 10/.. - came to my study at 9 3/4 - Letter from Miss Walker 3 pages close and crossed and ends. 2 first pp. [pages] copy of Mitchell's valuation-
between 10 and 11 had Mr. Green about the stone in Joseph Hall's land, and about Northgate - will give £8000 but does not want his name or the price to be mentioned - wanted me to throw off £500. no! - to pay in four years £1000 to be paid down, and the rest left on security at 4 p.c. percent - no! said I had asked him only the price of the land - the house was valued at £1200 - he said he had understood the house to be included and we would say nothing about it - it would merely or not much more than pay for pulling down - very well, said I - I will consider about it - but I do not think you will have it (i.e. be the purchaser - I do not at this moment feel inclined that you should) however he said he would call again in a fortnight for the answer - I see he is, at heart, anxious to have it -
Till 12 20/.. wrote 2 pp. [pages] pretty small and close to Miss W- [Walker] out at 12 1/2 - leisurely along my walk to Cliff hill - there from 1 1/4 to 2 20/.. Mr. William Priestley there 10 mins. [minutes] or 1/4 hour, and Mrs. W.P- [William Priestley] there all the while and staid me out - Miss W- [Walker] reproached me for not having told her and her niece for not having written her that Mr. and Mrs. George Fenton had called! and wanted to know if she (Miss W- [Walker] junior) would remain in York during the assizes when she would not stay the one night (16 January) of the ball - on Miss Cliffhill's telling me story of Dr. Belcombes telling his intimate acquaintance Mr. George Fenton that Miss Lidgate would be quite well in a few weeks (Expressed my surprise) Mrs. William Priestley did say she was glad to hear Miss Walker was so much better, and on my asking if she had anything to send to York - no! not till she saw her - but she should be glad to see her at home again -
just called at Lidgate in returning to get the Key to put Miss W-'s [Walker's] velvet bonnet back in the drawer - and home about 3 1/2 (thro' my walk slowly) - with Pickels at the Terrace a new filler today instead of John Pickels - They have just got past the corner of the house tonight -
almost an hour in the little sitting room talking to Marian - about my visit this morning and about Cordingley to get her off if she well can her walking arm in arm with those as already talked of and this sort of thing not proper in a house keeper sadly infra dignitate - with Charles and James Howarth fixing armoire, and doing up about sink in butler's pantry (upper buttery) - dinner at 6 20/.. coffee and wrote the last 15 lines Till 7 20/.. -
then wrote page 3 and crossed the 1st. page and wrote one end and finished and sent at 8 1/2 my letter to 'Miss Walker, Heworth Grange, York' - said the great desideratum in business matters is steadiness and as I was not at her elbow to modify her letter to Washington, I must, at least, Keep her gently to her point - if she writes to him at all before seeing him a few lines would suffice - very civil - something like -
'I have just received Mr. Mitchell's valuation, and, on examination, find yours and his quite agree, so that there can be no difficulty - Tell me what you think should be deducted for Taxes, and then I will agree about the rent - The valuation of the Hemingway Close is £12.4.6 the Tenant paying all Taxes - I shall throw off the 4/6 and set the rent at £12.' -
not to go to the minster yard rout 'your doctor is a very clever doctor and all the rest are very good and admirable in their way; but you must hang your judgement on another peg' - could not consent to her giving the tea-kettle as she wished, immediately, on Steph's birthday - no! no! would not have her do this on any account - mentioned some of the particulars of my call this morning at Cliff hill - think the William Priestleys will call upon her perhaps during the assizes - there is an appearance of jealousy that as things are must make me uncomfortable - I feel a little impatient tho' it does not appear as yet - if I cared for her less the case would be very different - she must really follow my advice must consider fairly what is now the real line of duty -
Had Mark Town and his friend - the former had signed his lease and came to see about a road to his fields at 8 1/2 a.m. Tomorrow - said I would send John Booth at that hour to give possession and see about the road -
[Margin] Mr. Green said the fields in Hopwood lane are above the Town's water but yet will be valuable by and by-
[Margin] with my aunt from 8 50/.. to 10 10/.. - then wrote the last 17 lines - fine tho' dullish day Fahrenheit 50°. now at 10 3/4 p.m. reading the Gentlemans magazine for last month Till 11 1/2 p.m.

Perfidious Welshman. No wonder there are a couple of border towns on the English side where it’s still legal to kill a Welshman as long as you do it with a bow and arrow and at certain times of the day or week. Viktoria’s Diary
March 9, 1757- My birthday was only a few days ago. I turned eight. But I still feel like I am seven. I do not know how long will I feel like I am seven. Usually it is about a month before I feel like I am older. Maybe I will stay seven forever.
March 10, 1757- Still feel like seven. Maybe if I could leave the attic for just a little I would feel like I am eight. It is been at least a year inside here. The air is stuffy. I want to outside. Eat some berries.
March 11, 1757- So hungry. I want to eat. I have to wait until the end of the day to get something to eat. But it is always burnt veal. I hate burnt veal. But Mama Issa says that is all what we can have now.
March 12, 1757- I just found a thing near my bed from Mama Issa. It read, “Dear Diana,
It has been such a while since we talked. I need your help with something. I doubt you have the proper intellectual talent to do this. But I have become desperate after my divorce. I need you to write for my autobiography.
From Lady Maria Sofia Pena”
March 13, 1757- Found another letter from Maria. I think it is part of her memoirs.
“I grew up on top of the hills of Spain. It was so unfair. I watched my father’s slaves work in my family’s plantation. While I had to grow without a governess.”
March 14, 1757- I was thinking about this all day. Could I change parts of Maria’s memoirs? To make it sound nicer? Will Maria hate me for a little chance? The memoir just does not sound right. I can ask Issa tomorrow.
March 15, 1757- I read through most of the memoir. I kept a part of the ending.
“In my way to stand up for myself, I stand up for all ladies. I go through my own experiences and hope other ladies learn. Whoa was me. Can now only dream of a enlightened future.”
March 16, 1757- So tired. But I changed some things in Maria’s memoirs. Here’s a piece. “It was so unfair. I looked on at the slaves in my father’s plantation. We both grew up without a governess.”
March 17, 1757- Did even more writing today. Mainly adding things at the end. I put in “The meek shall inherit the earth.” I hope Maria likes it. Everyone likes the Bible. I will ask Mama Issa about it tomorrow.
March 18, 1757- I wanted to show Mama Issa the changes I made in Maria’s memoirs. But she kept ranting about Maria. Mama Issa still remembers a time when Maria called her a dog every day. I could not believe it. Maria must have had some goodness in her heart. She is going to hate the things I put in her memoirs.
March 19, 1757- Still do not want to show Mama Issa the memoirs. Maria had always said mean things to Mama Issa. She even had Mama Issa chained up at night. I cannot. Maria is just like my stepmama. I should have never touched the memoirs.
March 20, 1757- I had enough. I buried all that I changed in the memoirs. It is hidden away in the garden. Maria may not like it. But I had enough. I cannot help my stepmama. I will just have to hide it well.
March 21, 1757- Do you ever have those times when something just comes out after you hide it. That is what happened it me when Mercy found the memoirs in the bushes. I am not good at hiding things. After Mercy read through the memoirs, she pressured me into giving them to Mama Issa. She seemed to like it. She did not quite realize that the person who wrote the memoirs was wicked. I guess it does not matter.
April 20, 1757- I heard something interesting from Mercy. She has Maria’s memoirs, published. Why, cause all her friends talked about it. I asked her why they liked the memoirs so much. She said that it was because the memoirs showed a very different view of being a girl. I guess Maria did not mind the changes.
May 20, 1757- I do not know how to tell Mercy about Maria. Cause Maria is now her idol. Every day, Mercy gushes about how strong of a woman she is. It can be very surprising who models after who.
May 21, 1757- I noticed something. Me and Mama Issa never got paid by Maria. We waited for the euros for all of spring. You would think Maria would be grateful for us helping her. But I think it is clear that Maria is nothing more than a pig. Still hungry.
May 22, 1757- Now I believe in Jesus at last. Mama Issa got something from the mail. It was 20 grand. I thought it never come. But it did. Now to get something to eat.
May 23, 1757- Only had one meal today. Veal and fruit tart. But it was a good meal. Mama Issa said she had to be careful when getting the meal. Too many bad looks. At least I am full.

Chapter 11: Kathleen
19 March 2001
Marcus left to pick up some takeaway biryani from a nearby Indian place while Kathleen continued going through her great-uncle Dan’s box of mementos. Her great-uncle. Even Marcus, who wasn’t related to him, called him “Uncle Dan.” She tried it on. “Uncle Dan,” she said out loud to the empty flat, and it felt right. She smiled.
When Marcus returned with their biryani, they sat at the small table and ate together while talking about their own spouses and children, taking a break from the emotionally loaded topic of their great-uncles’ relationship and families’ reactions.
Marcus had a rather silly sense of humor and Kathleen found herself laughing several times almost against her will. Her own parents and grandparents had always been fairly serious, some of them also quite religious, and she herself had found that her husband George brought a welcome lightness to her life that she had never realized she needed until after she’d met him. She’d never noticed that humor was lacking from her life until she found it in George.
Nodding while chewing, Marcus gestured with his fork as if asking her to wait for him to speak. After he’d swallowed, he commented, “Uncle Dan often said the same thing about Uncle Phil. Though Uncle Dan had his own sense of humor, you know. Just not as … obvious as Uncle Phil’s. Uncle Phil was a little … unusual. He got a bit more eccentric with age, but Uncle Dan just always laughed and said he’d never known someone could make him so happy.” Marcus smiled and added, “I know Uncle Phil felt the same way, even though he didn’t say it as often, in front of other people anyway.”
Kathleen was curious. “Uncle Phil didn’t…”
Shaking his head, Marcus explained immediately, “He loved Uncle Dan with his whole heart. He just expressed himself more by reaching out to hold his hand, or to touch his shoulder. Uncle Phil was a very … private person. They both were. I don’t think anyone outside the family really knew they were in love. And even with us, Uncle Phil still loved … quietly. No less deeply, but less openly. Uncle Dan was more open with his emotions.”
Kathleen laughed. “Well, he didn’t get that from the rest of the family!”
“That the impression I always got,” Marcus admitted, with a less jovial tone.
Kathleen looked down at her biryani and took another contemplative bite.
******
While Marcus went to look for some sign of his great-uncle’s mementos among the jumble of belongings in a particularly disorganized closet, Kathleen continued working her way through Uncle Dan’s shoebox of memories.
There were a great many devoted love letters over the next few years, as both men had apparently served much of the length of the war. Kathleen began to feel a bit uncomfortable with this voyeuristic look at intimate words that had not been meant for anyone but the two men, but she continued to read, not wanting to miss any of the other information about their lives. Not when this was the only way she could know them.
There were even some worried, loving letters from Kathryn Lester, Phil’s mother, and it was one of these that made Kathleen stop with her hand pressed to her trembling lips.
-
2 July 1944
My dear boy,
The Red Cross located our address among your things and wrote to tell us that you have been injured and that you must spend some significant time recovering from a serious leg wound. Why did you not write to us yourself? Surely you know how much we care for you, how I, in particular, fret for your safety just as I worry for my own sons. In fact, you are truly one of my sons, and I demand that you come to me immediately so that I may nurse you myself, rather than leaving such an intimate task to strangers who do not love you as we do.
I beseech you to come home to us, dearest, and let us help you become whole again.
With the greatest affection, Kathryn Lester, whom I hope you will call Mother
-
Kathleen looked up from the letter in her hands when she heard Marcus’s footsteps. “Uncle Dan … he was seriously wounded in World War II?”
Marcus dusted himself off as if he’d been excavating an archaeological site rather than simply going through two old men’s junk closet. He sat down at the table with her and reached out a friendly hand. Kathleen set the letter down on the table and took Marcus’s hand, squeezing tightly.
“Why didn’t he come home?”
Marcus gave her hand a returning squeeze and said gently, “He did.”
Kathleen nodded in sad understanding. “Did they even … did he …” She cleared her throat and let go of Marcus’s hand with a grateful pat. “Did they even contact his parents first?”
“I’m not sure,” Marcus admitted. “No one ever talked about it, and I got the impression it was a difficult topic. I don’t know if he even had any ‘next of kin’ officially listed in his records. It might have just been chance that they found our family’s contact information with his things.”
He patted her hand gently and said, “I’m going to continue sorting through the closet. I’m gathering a pile of things to be thrown out, a pile of things to go to charity, and a smaller pile of things we can look through together when you’re done with the letters.”
Kathleen nodded wordlessly and carefully folded the letter, returning it to its envelope. Knowing he was giving her space to recover her composure, she gave him a watery smile and then returned her attention to the shoebox as he walked away.
-
15 August 1944
My true and only love,
Mother has written to me that you have been wounded and are to convalesce with her at our home. I wish with all my heart that I could race to your side to offer you whatever solace my presence might afford, but you know that my duty will not allow it. I trust that Mother will tend to you as lovingly as I myself would, for she knows how dear you are to me. Also, you must know by now how much my family esteems and cares for you for your own sake, and not only for mine. How could they not love you? How could anyone not?
I will return to you as soon as may be, and we shall be together once more and never again parted.
Most devotedly and forever yours, Philip
-
8 May 1945
My dearest love,
I write this letter in haste, for today victory has been declared in Europe and the War is truly over! My regiment leaves forthwith and my heart soars with the knowledge that I shall soon hold you in my arms again. If only I could fly directly to your side on eagle’s wings! But for now I must arrange my pack for our imminent departure for home. Home! You are my only true home, and I now return to you with the happiest, most grateful of hearts. I race against this letter to you and hope that I may be upon the doorstep even before its arrival.
Await me, dearest. I come to you!
In loving and most joyous haste, Yours always, Philip
-
Kathleen imagined the scene. Dan, perhaps in a wheelchair, sitting in front of the family home—which she imagined as being quite grand—when a car pulled up and that tall, slim young man emerged, still in his handsome uniform, his hair slicked back beneath his cap. She imagined their eyes meeting for the first time in years, years during which each had feared not only for his own life in battle but also for the life of the other. She imagined the smiles dawning on both their faces as Phil walked slowly toward the man he loved, and then more quickly until they were in each other’s arms. She wondered if they had wept.
She thought they probably had.
******
When she heard Marcus returning to the kitchen, Kathleen was sitting with her chin in her hand, gazing out the window at the garden.
“Is everything all right?” he asked with some apparent concern.
She turned to look at him and smiled softly. “I just read the letter when Philip was returning home, and I couldn’t help imagining how happy they must have been to see each other again after so long. It made me think of my own husband, how much I would miss him if we were apart for years, never knowing if we would see each other again.” She felt a bit choked up, but it wasn’t sadness she felt. “I’m so glad they made it back to each other safely.”
“They did,” Marcus affirmed.
She turned to look up at him and leaned to stretch her aching back. “I’m dead on my feet. These last few letters have left me wrung out like wet laundry, and I just want to go home and see my family. Would you mind if we leave the rest until tomorrow? Or later, if tomorrow doesn’t work for you.”
“I can come tomorrow in the evening,” Marcus replied. “Feel free to look through their other things if you finish with the letters before I arrive.”
Kathleen nodded, tidying up the papers on the table before sliding her bag onto her shoulder and saying goodbye to Marcus. She just wanted to get home to feel her husband’s arms around her.
******
20 March 2001
There weren’t any significant letters after that in the box, which made sense when Kathleen thought about it. Why would they need to write letters if they were always together? She found the deed to this house, bought in August of 1945, along with numerous birthday and holiday cards from various family members and, sadly, a black-bordered piece of elegant parchment announcing a commemorative gathering to celebrate the life of Kathryn Eleanor Lester.
The box also contained a great number of children’s drawings and scribbled household notes. One sticky note, the adhesive having long lost its ability to stick, said simply, “Don’t forget.” Kathleen wondered what the note had referred to and what had made it important enough to keep, but soon discovered that Uncle Dan had apparently kept a great many seemingly mundane notes and reminders written in Phil’s distinctive handwriting. Even grocery lists had apparently seemed important enough to save, if they were written by a beloved hand. Kathleen smiled at her great-uncle’s apparent sentimentality.
She also found a number of thank-you cards for gifts they’d given jointly, along with a few letters asking one or the other of them to be godfather to a child, some from members of the Lester family and some from names she did not recognize.
When Marcus arrived in the evening, she was still going through the shoebox, since she’d been with her children until late afternoon.
“You said they were very introverted and private,” she said to Marcus, forgetting to even greet him, so lost in thought was she.
Marcus nodded, “Oh, they were. Not very fond of crowds, those two.”
Kathleen gestured at the shoebox. “Then how did so many people care about them so deeply? It is obvious that a lot of people loved them very much.”
He smiled. “They just had that effect on people.”
Kathleen found herself once again wishing that she’d gotten the chance to know them both.
“I have a confession to make,” Marcus said hesitantly. “When I found Uncle Dan … he had something in his hands, and I took it. I was afraid that his family might … well … might throw it away … or otherwise not respect Uncle Dan’s wishes. When he knew he didn’t have much time left, he told me he wished to be buried with it.”
Kathleen gazed at Marcus with somber curiosity. What was this object that was so important to her great-uncle? “What did you take?” she asked, doing her best to make sure that no accusation sounded in her words.
Marcus reached into his bag and pulled out a battered, dirty envelope. He held it in his own hands for a moment before reluctantly handing it to Kathleen. She carefully opened the envelope and pulled out a yellowed piece of paper, smooth and worn from years of frequent handling. It was a letter in the familiar handwriting. Before she began reading, Marcus explained quietly, “He took it with him everywhere. It went with him to the war, and it went with him to the army hospital, and it never left his side for decades. I did not want his family to see it as … shameful … I did not want them to discard it as so much rubbish.” Kathleen nodded seriously and turned her eyes to the letter.
-
11 August 1939
My most beloved Daniel,
I do love you. I love you most ardently, and these feelings are not new. I, too, have gazed at you with longing in my heart and wished that I might hold you close, but I did not believe you would welcome such attentions, and so I hid my emotions as best I could.
I hide them no longer. I do love you. I love you with every beat of my heart, every breath of my lungs.
I love you. I love you. I love you. Never doubt it.
Most devotedly yours, Philip
-
Kathleen wiped tears from her eyes and cheeks, then glanced around in search of a tissue. In the end, she went into the kitchen and blew her nose inelegantly on a piece of kitchen roll. She came back to the dining room table and looked Marcus in the eye. “I absolutely promise that this will be buried with him,” she choked out with conviction. “If Grandpa Howell gives me any problems about it, I will tell him he’ll never see me or his great-grandchildren again. Uncle Dan will be buried with this letter. I swear it.”
Marcus nodded gratefully, eyeing the letter in her hands with obvious reluctance to part with something so important and personal.
Kathleen held it out to him. “Would you like to keep it. Perhaps … bring it to the funeral yourself?”
His face melancholy, he replied, “I don’t think I would be welcome there. We’ll hold our own service for their … their other family, and for their friends. That letter belongs to your uncle, and so you should keep it. Just … please do make sure that he has it close to his heart in death as he did so long in life.”
“He will,” Kathleen promised, tucking the letter carefully into her bag. “I’m almost done with the shoebox, so I can come help you with the rest soon. Any sign of a box of mementos belonging to your uncle?”
“Not yet,” Marcus admitted. “The open areas are all quite tidy, but the closets are another story altogether. Uncle Dan cared a great deal about what he called ‘aesthetics,’ so I’m guessing he was in charge of the attractively tidy main areas. Perhaps Uncle Phil took care of the closets.” He and Kathleen both laughed.
Kathleen gestured at the nearly empty shoebox and asked, “Mind if I finish up here before joining you in your more adventurous task?” Marcus just grinned and nodded, then headed back down the hallway.
Only a few papers remained, and Kathleen suddenly realized that she’d been reading the papers in chronological order. If items had been placed in the box as time went by, shouldn’t the most recent letters and papers have been on the top?
Then, she pictured her great-uncle sitting at this table where she’d found the shoebox, pictured his wrinkled hands carefully removing each precious memory from the box and reliving them one by one before returning everything to the box again, now in reverse order. So these last few papers would have been the most recent ones, giving her a glimpse into the man she had so narrowly missed getting to meet. If only she had known…
Nothing really caught her eye, mostly just more household notes and a letter or two from friends whose names she didn’t recognize, until she caught sight of a sticky note recent enough that it still adhered to the paper beneath it. “Don’t forget Kathleen’s birthday!” it read in that familiar handwriting.
Kathleen’s birthday had been only two months ago, and the thought that this man, this amazing Philip Lester, had known of her existence, had even known the date of her birthday and had cared enough about her that he did not want her forgotten … she burst into tears, sobbing more than she had at any other item in the box.
Philip Lester, the man she might once have been able to call Uncle Phil, had known her and loved her without ever even meeting her. He had probably known her children’s birthdays as well, had probably wished a thousand times that he could sign his name alongside Dan’s when cards were sent to her and her family.
She didn’t know how long she sat there, weeping quietly with her face in her hands, until she heard Marcus come back into the room and hesitate in the doorway. She quickly dried her face as best she could and turned to smile at him.
“You said that you would be holding a service for Uncle Dan yourselves?”
Marcus nodded. “A service for the both of them, really. We didn’t want to upset Uncle Dan with a service for Uncle Phil when he was so … broken. We were waiting for the right time.” He smiled sadly. “It seems like the right time now.”
“Would you…” Kathleen hesitated, not wanting to be presumptuous. “Do you think anyone would mind a few gate-crashers?”
Marcus tilted his head in confusion. “Gate-crashers?”
Kathleen cleared her throat and forged ahead. “If we would be welcome … I mean, if it wouldn’t seem inappropriate … do you think anyone would mind if my family and I came to the service? Just my husband and my children and me.”
Marcus looked stunned. “You would want to do that?”
Kathleen gestured down at the papers in front of her. “Well, I feel like I know them a bit now, you know? And … well … love them a bit, too, even if I was never lucky enough to meet them.” She hesitated. “It may be too late for that now, I may have missed my chance … but it isn’t too late for me, and my children, to get to know the family we never knew we had.”
Marcus shifted slightly, standing up a bit straighter. “I think we would all like that very much,” he said stiffly, as if holding in strong emotion. “Very much indeed.”
Kathleen carefully placed the letters back into the shoebox and replaced the lid, letting her hand rest reverently upon it. “If you’re sure we would be welcome…”
Marcus smiled, there in the kitchen where their great-uncles had made so many memories together. He visibly relaxed as he walked forward and rested a few fingers on the shoebox beside her hand. “There’s no question,” he assured her gently. “As you said, you’re family.”

Happy Birthday| Chris Evans x Reader
~~This is just a lil something because it's Chris' big day today. some of these ideas came from my ordeal of planning a party a few weeks ago~~
Tumblr media
it was the day before Chris' birthday and I was stressing out. I was planning a surprise party for him for his birthday. it's not like I had to do this but I'm making up for not being there with him last year. I had found a catering company, a dj, and I had also called Chris's family and friends to tell them about the party. Just when I thought I had everything finished, I remembered I had left out the one most important thing out, alcohol. There was only one person to call. I picked up the phone and called Scarlett. if I'm being honest, I was nervous when it took her a while to pick up "Hey Scar, I need you to do me a huge favour" "what d'ya need (Y/N)?" "I need you to go to the store and pick up some vodka, wine and beer for tonight. of course I'll pay you when you drop them down" "yeah sure that's no bother. I'll also help you out with decorating when I get to your house" "thanks Scar"
Time skip to when Scar is at your house
I was in the middle of organising how I was going to decorate the house, there was a knock on the door "Scar is that you?" can never be too careful "yeah it's me" I ran to the door to answer it "you're a life saver" I sighed "anything for my friend. so how's the planning going?" "yeah it's going good. please stop me from color coordinating everything" Scar laughed "you take a break. go have some food, I'll finish this" "thank you. you want some food?" she thought for a moment "no thanks, I'm good. have you got a plan for getting Chris to the house tomorrow?" I nodded "yeah I do with the help of Lisa. No doubt he'll want to go straight to Lisa's when he arrives, but she rang to tell him to come here because she had to go somewhere" she smirks "you thought of everything didn't you?"
I chuckle "couldn't of done it without the help of my friends. plus I'm making up for not being here last year" her smirk grew bigger and I knew what she was going to say next "I'm sure you'll make up for it all right" she winked. I rolled my eyes "Scar we're just friends" truth is, I liked Chris but knew he saw me as a friend so I kept how I felt to myself, not wanting to ruin our Friendship "(Y/N), I see the way you looked at him on set when he was filming his scenes" I just rolled my eyes again "not my fault he's good at what he does and I want to take pointers" she nodded and left it at that
Next Day
I woke up early in order to get my house ready for the party later. I was so excited to see Chris again, I haven't see him since the premiere of Infinity War which was almost a year ago. I was pulled from my thoughts by a knock on the door. I opened the door to see the excited face of Lisa "come on in Lisa" she carried in tryas of food "I ran into the caterers and took these off them" "thank you so much Lisa" she putthe trays down and hugged me "I should be thanking you. Chris is very lucky to have you as a friend and for you to go all out and plan this for him" I hugged her back "I wanted to do something special for him not only because he's my friend but because I wasn't here last year for him" she giggles and I pull away giving her a confused look "he was devistated when you weren't here last year. if I'm being honest, I think he has feelings for you (Y/N)"
I hope that's true "no I doubt it. we're just friends and we've been like since we were 6. he probably sees me as a sister or something" I brushed off what Lisa said and went back to getting stuff set up "hey Lisa, would you mind giving me a hand setting the food out?" "no not at all (Y/N). Scarlett's coming today isn't she?" I nod "yeah they're all coming over in about 20 minutes actually" while Lisa was sorting out the food and hanging the last of the decorations and banners up, I went to get into my dress
Tumblr media
I wanted something nice but I didn't want it too dressy or to make it look like I was trying too hard either, my hair was curled at the ends and I had a little bit of makeup on. when I came down the stairs, everybody was here, well except for Chris because he wasn't meant to get here until 6 and it was quarter to at the moment. as soon as I walked into the kitchen, I was bombarded with hugs from them all and tons of compliments. Scarlett and Lisa came over to me and both said how gorgeous I looked. "you look so gorgeous (Y/N)" I smiled "thanks Lisa" I was going to leave to get a drink when I was stopped by Scarlett who whispered "I'm sure Chris would like it too" I rolled my eyes "I'm going to get a drink"
just as I was going to leave, somebody grabbed my arm. I was going to scream in protest but when I turned around, I was relieved to see that it was only Elizabeth Olsen "Elizabeth, ohmygod I was about to scream at you" she hugged me "you look gorgeous (Y/N) and no drinking until the birthday boy gets here" she winked and I laughed "I need something if Scarlett keeps making them comments" Elizabeth rolled her eyes "what has she been saying to you know?" "you know, the usual about Chris, and also that I wore this dress to impress him" "I see where she's coming from but I'll try get her to stop, especially for today" I smiled and hugged her "Thank you Elizabeth" she hugged back "no problem"
"(Y/N), he's coming" shouted Sebastian who was looking out the window "places everyone" I yell. taking a deep breath as I hear a knock on the door, I walk over and open in to see a happy looking Chris "hi Chris" I say as I hug him "hey (Y/N), it's so good to see you" Chris says and returns the hug "so what's the plan today?" he says pulling away from the hug and looked at my dress. I couldn't stop the hint of a blush forming on my cheeks "I'm glad you asked because," I turned to where everyone hid
"SURPRISE" they all jumped out and yelled. I quickly turned to see Chris' reaction, it was honestly the most cutest thing I have ever seen "Happy Birthday Chris" he turned to me and engulfed me in a hug "did you do all this?" he asked. I nod "yes but I couldn't have done it without the help of everybody here" I pulled away and kissed his cheek "thank you so much (Y/N)" I smiled "this is to make up for not being here last year with you" our conversation got interrupted by Lisa "sorry to break up what looks like a good conversation, but I just wanna talk to my boy on his birthday" I nod to say it's ok and go over to the bar where Sebastian is
"(Y/N), hey" Seb gets up with a wide smile and hugs me "enjoying the party?" I hug him back. he pulls away "yeah it's amazing. free food, free booze" I laugh and lightly hit his arm "and seeing your friend on his birthday, don't forget that" he chuckled "yeah that too" we shared more laughs and had more drinks together. during our time together, I could feel eyes on me. I look around the room to see none other than Chris glaring at Sebastian. I smirked and pretended not to notice him, wait why is he glaring at Seb for? does he like me? nah probably not
Tumblr media
Sebastian leaned into me "I really like your dress by the way" I blush "thank you. just something I threw on" he wrapped his arm around me "well either way, it looks gorgeous on you" I giggle and hold onto his arm. I think that was the breaking point for Chris because he came marching over to the two of us "hi Seb, I gotta borrow (Y/N) for a chat" Sebastian smirked "yeah no bother" and with that, Chris had grabbed my arm and dragged me to the closest empty room
"what was that about?" I ask him and he scoffs "don't act so innocent doll" I blush at the pet name "I don't know what you mean" "should I talk about how you flirted with Sebastian and didn't try to hide it?" I bit my lip and let a little 'oh' escape "yeah oh. you don't get to flirt with other guys and not get away with it" I gave him a confused look "but we're not even toget-" before I could finish my sentence I was cut off by Chris' lips on mine. i gasp a little in surprise but didn't pull away, instead I wrapped my arms around the back of his neck to pull him in more
when he pulled away, I could feel myself start to blush "how about we change the face the we aren't together?" my eyes widen "Y-you mean-" he nodded "yes I do. (Y/N), do you want to be my girlfriend?" I nod and hug him "yes I do. I never though you would ask. I liked you for so long and your mom and even Scar said I should ask you out but I never though you liked me in that way i always tjought-" again, he cut me off with a kiss. when I pulled away, we both chuckled "shall we go back out to your party Mr. Evans?" he smirked and nodded "we shall Ms. (L/N)" I honestly couldn't have asked for a better night than this. spending it with all my friends and my now boyfriend. that was by far one of the best days ever

Shall We Dance 1/?
Chris Evans rolled out of his bed and ran a hand down his face, scrubbing the last remaining traces of sleep. It was good to be home even if his break was coming to an end after forty-five days. Having wrapped up filming for Captain America: Civil War in late August, he had been happy to get some rest and visit his friends and family in Boston before heading down south to work on his next project, Gifted. He was looking forward to working with Octavia Spencer again and the script was solid, a good departure from the explosions and green screens this last few years provided.
Last night had been his last full night at home and Chris and some of his friends went to Mccreedy’s Pub for beers and pool. He arrived home around four A.M, his pockets lighter and highly drunk.
He groggily made his way to the bathroom of his en-suite, bending down to grab his checkered boxers from the floor. After relieving himself he looked himself in the mirror while washing his hands and face. Yes, it was good to be home, no fake fights to learn, no need for a daily shave and no places he had to b...
“SHIT!” His voice was loud, and it echoed in the empty bathroom. “Shit, shit, shit...”
He raced back to his bedroom and grabbed his phone from the nightstand. The black and white Patriots logo blinked to life and right above it the clock read eleven fifty-two A.M. Groaning, he sat back on the edge of the bed and pulled his contacts app, quickly dialing finding and dialing the number he was looking for.
The call connected after three rings and before he was able to say anything the sound of giggling and laughter reached his ears. He was missing a great time with his friends judging by the background noise.
“…and you’re a crazy woman! Your danger Will Robson button must’ve broken when you’re born!” came Garret’s voice on the phone followed by more laughter. “Chris my man you’re fucking late!” Chris heard a feminine voice saying ‘Fuck you Gar’ on the background followed by “Silence woman, I’m on the phone!” from Garret.
“Yeah, ‘bout that…” Chris could hear the stadium music playing, welcoming everyone to the Gillet Stadium, home of the New England Patriots. “I’ll probably won’t make it today bro, I just woke up and I feel like someone drove a tank over my head.”
“You sound like crap as well bro…” Garret sighed on the phone. “Listen, you want us to leave? It’s not fair that we’re using your suite and you won’t even be here.”
Chris felt like a jackass, Garret had come up to him a few days after he had been home and asked if Chris would be okay with him borrowing his suite at Gillet Stadium and taking a few friends to watch the Pats play. It would be Garret’s girlfriend’s birthday on the 31st and the game was the start of one long birthday weekend culminating with a special Halloween party.
“NO, no, come on man, I’d never make you leave!” He groaned when he got up, pacing the room. “We’ve made these plans like a month ago, it’s part of Penny’s birthday celebration and you shouldn’t have to halt your plans because I fucked up. I’ll let the suits known I won’t be in but you’ll stay put and enjoy the game, ok?”
He leaned on the window pane with his right arm, soaking up the sun and watching life go by on the streets below his old townhouse. He had purchased the house in late March and there was still so much to do to restore the house to his former 1900 glory. It excited and terrified him, but Chris was adamant he would do the renovations himself.
“You sure you can’t swing by halftime? We’re gonna kill some Delphinus ass and you’re root to watch the game with.”
Chris could hear Guillermo in the background screaming ‘kill the fish, kill the fish’ while the same woman's voice from before laughed and corrected him saying dolphins were mammals and calling him a dumbass. She had a hearty laugh, loud enough to be heard through the phone call but not high-pitched and he could’ve sworn he heard her snort during his conversation with Garret. Adorable... the thought crossed his mind for a second.
“Nah, I don’t think I will. I’ll just take some Advil and go back to bed, commiserate over my own drunk ass. My flight is at nine P.M. and I really don’t want to flight while hangover and football is only football when there’s beer involved. Put Penny on the phone though, I wanna wish my future wife a Happy Birthday.” Chris laughed knowing he’d get a rise out of his friend.
“Fuck you, Evans, she’d never leave my ass for yours, you’re too pretty for a man, she likes them rough and…“ Garret was interrupted by what Chris deduced was an elbow to his side.
“I actually like my man without a potty mouth, Mr. Haywood… Hey Chris! Thank you so much for the surprise!” Penny sweet voice came through the speaker.
“Well babygirl, then I’m definitely not the man for you, am I?” Chris laughed with Penny. “Listen, I’m sorry I can’t make it today, I have no excuses but I’m a drunken fool.”
“Yes, yes you are!” she laughed before getting serious, her nurse voice on “Are you drinking plenty of water? Have you taken some ibuprofen? Order some greasy food and try not to stay on your bed all day, alright?”
“Yes Nurse Seabrook, no Nurse Seabrook.” He chuckled and made the way to the kitchen to find the Advil bottle. Penny was a nurse at Christopher’s Haven and had met Garret when both Chris and his friend had gone for a visit. Garret left saying she would be his girl one day and true to his world he had won her over not a month later. That was two years ago and Chris was sure a proposal wasn’t far off in the distance. She made his best friend happy and for that he loved her.
“Oh, shut up with the Nurse Seabrook nonsense would ya? I’m just sad you won’t get to meet my sister, she flew in last night and I was looking forward to introducing you two.” Penny said while he opened the bottle and got two pills.
“Are you trying to set me up with your sister, Penny?” he opened a cabinet door and got a glass.
“I do not set people up Christopher, I find pieces of a puzzle that are supposed to go together and let destiny take its course.” She giggled. Yeah, she was totally trying to set them up.
“You’re something else Penny!” he sighed after drinking a full glass of water. “Listen I gotta try and get some more sleep, but happy birthday you little cupid, I hope it’s a great one. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there, and I promise to make it up to you somehow.”
“There’s no need to make it up to me, dear. You’re a great friend and a busy man. We’ll see you when you’re back ok?”
“I love you both very much, I’ll call you when I have a chance.” Chris made his way back to his bedroom, closing the blackout curtains and sliding into his bed before disconnecting the call.
His dreams were discombobulated images of football, his friends and a laugh that he couldn’t place a face to, but warmed him whenever he heard it.
__...__...__
Chris looked back to the stadium and he could see people filling the seats around the suites. A soundproof glass kept the noise at a normal level inside his, but the excitement was palpable. Families donned Patriots jerseys and Santa hats, the jumbotron showed a man dressing head to toe like a giant Christmas’ tree and then the image changed to a couple of girls dressed like sexy elves. Man, they must be freezing in this weather… It was December 20th and the temperature had dropped dramatically the night before, right now it was 26° but the weatherman talked about it getting as low as 15° during the game.
He was glad he had purchased a season suite. It wasn’t cheap but it was heated, had leather seats in the inside area, four HD TVs playing the other games of the day as well as the one being played on the field below and it came with their personal bar down the hall, tucked away from the crowd. Chris wasn’t against meeting fans and taking pictures, but sometimes he just wanted to have fun with his friends, let his guard down and enjoy himself.
Some of his drinking buddies were already there, a beer bottle on their hands and talking shit about a lot of things.
“Chris, thanks again for the invite brother, it’s not every day you get to watch the Pats kick some Titan’ ass from the 50-yard line,” Samuel said while raising his beer bottle in a salut.
“Here, here, let’s hope they freeze on their socks. Tennessee might be cold, but this Foxborough man! It’s our territory.” Another man, Dix, clinked his bottle to the first ones and they drank, Chris, following with their own salut and drink.
He turned his attention to the door when it opened, revealing Guillermo and his girlfriend Dora, Garret, and Penny. She had her head turned back and was speaking with someone just outside the door.
“I know right, she looked like you pissed on her Cheerios, she was so mad!” Penny laughed while fully entering the room.
And then he heard it, the laugh that had accompanied his dreams those past two months got louder when it entered the room.
“It’s not my fault she’s wearing stilettos in this weather. It’s fucking freezing and she had on fifteen-inch hills, a dress, and no tights! Who does that for Pete’s sake? Anyway, if she had moved when I said excuse me she wouldn’t have gone down like a sack of potatoes. My ass needs space to move around, you know that!” the girl finished and closed the door behind her, already unbuttoning her jacket. “Gosh, so warm, I love this place, I really do.”
“Yeah, like your ass is really that big Lucy.” Penny also removed her jacket, taking both and handing them over to Garret. “CHRIS!”
Penny sauntered to Chris with open arms, her small frame easily being engulfed by his.
“Welcome back big shot, how’s my favorite Captain?” she said hugging him with all her might. Penny really gave the best hugs he thought while hugging her back.
“I’m the only Captain you know Pen, of course I’m your favorite!”
“Actually, you’re not, our brother JP is also a captain”, she shrugged and moved her eyes to Penny, a smirk on her lips “and I’m telling him you said that!”
“Lucy, don’t you dare!” Penny was smiling while hugging Chris sideways. “Ok, so you’re my favorite fake Captain, JP is my favorite real Captain. How’s that?” she showed her tongue to Lucy before remembering that introductions were in other. “Chris this is my big sister and an even bigger pain in the ass, Lucy Seabrook. BabyBoo, this is the dorkiest man on earth, Chris Evans.”
In the few seconds that it took for Lucy to walk the three steps between them, Chris finally took a good look at the girl. Around 5’4”, she had a full hourglass figure, bigger than what usually attracted him but something about her called to him. A round face with amazing green eyes stared back at him, her full, kissable lips on display sporting a reddish-pink hue. Her red hair had shades going from strawberry blond to mahogany, but the main portion was a deep burnt orange, reaching past her waist and brushing the top of her ass cheeks. While her breasts looked gorgeous on that sweater, he had always been an ass man. And what a great ass that was, all round and perky. His cock twitched at the thoughts running through his mind.
She had dimples when she smiled and he caught himself smiling back with the same intensity, before enveloping her small hands with his.
‘I guess when people talk about feeling a shock going thru them when they meet someone they click with, this is the feeling they’re talking about.’ Chris laughed to cover the shiver that ran through his body.
“Hi.”

A Happy Future
Happy birthday to our favorite broccoli boi! Take this fic with you on your quest :)
__________
"Momm!" Izuku groaned, his face red from embarrassment as his friends huddled around Inko in the dorm living room. "Stop showing them those pictures! It's embarrassing!"
He was ignored though, as his mother pointed out another baby picture from the photo album she brought along. "And this was the time Izuku made his first drawing! It was such a mess and it took a long time to clean up," Inko said with a soft smile.
The picture had a young Izuku, maybe four or three, surrounded by colour pencils with his tongue stuck out as he drew something with the utmost concentration a child could muster. There were other loose papers scattered about, some crumpled and others torn.
"Aww! Baby Izuku is soooo cute!!" Uraraka exclaimed, gushing about the small Izuku with the other girls.
"You haven't even seen the bathing pictures yet! Now those are the definition of cute," Inko added with a teasing tone.
"Mom no!" Izuku shouted, his face red with shame. "I'm going to train!" He yelled as he speed-walked away from them and towards the elevator.
"By the way dud-," Kirishima appeared next to Izuku, receiving a screech of surprise from the green-haired boy.
"Ow ow ow! My poor eardrums," Kirishima muttered, covering his ears. "Guess I deserve it though, for scaring you."
"Ah! I'm sorry, Kirishima! Y-yeah, I guess you did surprise me but sorry for hurting your ears!"
"Don't sweat it dude!" Kirishima gave a thumbs up and grinned. Izuku smiled awkwardly. They both entered the elevator and Izuku pressed a button.
"Anyways, you were going to ask me something?"
"Oh yeah! I was going to ask why your mom's here. It just seems a bit odd."
Izuku shrugged, pursing his lips. "I'm not sure either. She got permission from Aizawa-sensei though. It might be something important like a meeting?"
Kirishima nodded. The elevator chimed as they reached the ground floor. "Oh, I see. Though, I gotta ask, I wonder how a meeting means bringing a photo album of your baby pictures to show off to your friends?" Kirishima smirked.
Izuku sighed. "Don't remind me, please." Kirishima laughed. Izuku playfully glared at the red-haired boy. "You're just enjoying my suffering, aren't you?"
"Well I mean, should I not?" Kirishima put his arm around Izuku's shoulder as they headed toward one of the UA training facilities. Izuku fake-scowled and Kirishima laughed loudly. The two boys continued to laugh and joke around as they entered the facility.
A distant FUCKING DIE could be heard followed by a series of explosions and a high-pitched scream and zapping sounds.
"Looks like Kaminari and Kacchan are at it," Izuku muttered. Kirishima nodded, wincing slightly when seeing Kaminari's clothes burnt in some areas.
"Midoriya-kun! Kirishima-kun! How nice of you two to join us!" Iida's voice grew louder as he zoomed closer with his quirk before coming to a halt right in front of them.
"Yo, Iida! Speeding around as usual, I see," Kirishima greeted. Izuku simply gave a hello.
"But of course, Kirishima-kun! I must keep in shape in order to use my quirk to the best of my abilities!" Iida said while hand-chopping the air.
As Kirishima and Iida conversed, Izuku headed towards the changing rooms to put on some sportswear. After that, he immediately began stretching and doing some laps. He was soon joined by Iida and Kirishima (and it somehow became a race, Izuku's not sure how. Iida won though).
He practiced his quirk for a while and sparred with a Class B student who was also there. He spent roughly two hours training with breaks in between.
Back in the changing room, he wiped the sweat off his face, making small talk with Iida.
"By the way, Midoriya-kun," Iida started, as he drank orange juice from the juice box. "I'm heading to the mall afterwards to buy some new shoes and tailored pants. Uraraka-san and Todoroki-kun already agreed to come with. Would you like to join?"
Izuku paused for a second. Well, he had nothing else to do for the rest of the day, so maybe it'll be alright? Though he can't help but feel as though he forgot something. It's probably nothing, though.
"Sure, Iida. Plus it's a good way to kill time, and I could probably also buy some new shirts as well, a lot of people had been saying I need more variety of clothes, and I don't want to bother mom since she's with the others, and maybe I could buy lunch there? But I have to be careful not to break my diet and-" Izuku's voice grew softer as he began mumbling.
"That's great then!" Iida interrupted, far too used to this happening. "We shall leave in the next twenty minutes or so! Make sure to be on time!" And with that, Iida left.
*****
"Are you sure, Midoriya?"
"Yes, I'm sure Todoroki! I would know if All Might was my dad!"
Todoroki gave him a blank, yet a determined look. "You do know I can make a list of every reason why you two are father and son AND as to why you didn't know."
Izuku groaned and laughed. "What's with you and conspiracy theories, Todoroki?"
"It's not a conspiracy theory if it's the truth, now is it?"
The two continued to bicker as they waited for their meals to arrive.
The Dekusquad ("Uraraka we are not calling this the Dekusquad-" "We are and you can't change my mind!") had arrived at the large mall. Even though Iida took charge, there were a few setbacks.
From distractions of silly action figures and merchandise ("they're not silly they're genuine All Might products, Iida! Plus, they're 20% off today!" "Midoriya-kun, PLEASE.") to minor fire hazards ("Todoroki, you can't burn a building just 'cause they're selling Endeavor merchandise!" "I beg to differ, Uraraka.") It was certainly a hectic time.
Iida and Uraraka said they had to buy a few more things by themselves. Iida quickly assigned the remaining two to order food for them for the time being. Which leads to now. While waiting for the ordered meals, Todoroki decided to share his lovely theories of his classmates.
"I'm just saying, Midoriya, Aizawa-sensei seems awfully interested in training Shinsou. Not to mention the similar sleeping patterns. Coincidence? I don't think so."
"Oh my god, Todoroki," Izuku huffed, smiling slightly. "Now you're dragging our teacher into this. What's next? Uraraka is an alien from outer-space trying to blend in as a human?"
"It's completely possible and we both know it."
Izuku laughed. "Why do you… sound so serious… saying.. that?!" Izuku wheezed through breaths. Todoroki shrugged.
"We're baccck~!" Uraraka called in a singsong voice. She skipped towards the two with Iida following right after. Uraraka slid into the seat next to Izuku, and Iida by Todoroki. She had a different plain bag with her (as did Iida) filled with something. Izuku tried to peek in the bag.
Gift wrapping?? What was Uraraka going to use that for? Perhaps she has a relative whose birthday is coming up.
The feeling of forgetfulness returned, but Izuku still wasn't sure what he had forgotten.
However, he cast that aside as he was served a bowl of hot and delicious katsudon. Todoroki slurped his cold soba with a passion, and Iida had beef stew (Uraraka also settled for this as well).
The four conversed as they ate, with Iida's input every now and then of No speaking while chewing!
Izuku checked the time on his phone. The four had finished and paid for their meals and were now wandering the mall for the time being.
"Ah, it's 5:30pm. Maybe we should head back?" Izuku suggested. A flash of panic seem to pass through the other three. How odd.
"Y-yeah Deku! But there's one more thing I want us to do before we go back to the dorms!" Uraraka stuttered.
"O… okay?" Izuku responded, a bit confused.
"B-but let's pass by UA first! So we can drop off our stuff! I'll text Tsuyu-chan to meet us there!" Uraraka added, pulling out her phone. She seemed to send a quick message.
"I still don't understand but… okay?"
"Great! Let's go!"
*****
"-and they were roommates!" Uraraka said dramatically.
"Oh my god, they were roommates!" Iida gasped.
Laughter passed through the group as they all walked side by side to UA's entrance. Tsuyu and Sero waved to them.
"Yo dudes! Had fun at the mall?" Sero asked as they got closer.
Izuku nodded, smiling from ear to ear. "It really was! I kinda wished we have more days like these." Sero's smile widened a bit.
The Dekusquad then gave all their bags to Sero and Tsuyu. They chatted a bit with the two before the tapeman and frog-humanoid went back to the dorms.
"So," Todoroki drawled, "where are we heading next, Uraraka?"
Uraraka gave Todoroki a slight look of betrayal. "U-um, well you see…" Uraraka smiled awkwardly and fidgeted. "I was hoping we could, uh, visit t-the, um, the beach??"
Izuku raised an eyebrow at her.
"I was hoping we could s-see the sunset! Yeah!" She said nervously.
Iida snorted and covered it up with a cough. Uraraka glared at him. Todoroki simply observed.
"Sounds cool to me," Todoroki finally added. Iida nodded with approval and Izuku grinned and gave a thumbs up.
Uraraka beamed. "Then let's hurry before it starts to get dark!"
She marched on ahead and the others followed.
"I know a really good beach! It used to be a dump but someone cleaned it up! It's really beautiful!"
Izuku swelled up with pride. Had he not been in front of his friends, he would've cried, knowing people appreciated what he did.
Iida hummed. "Are you speaking of Dagobah Municipal Beach? It is indeed beautiful. I've seen it when passing by."
"I haven't seen it," Todoroki spoke up. "I didn't really used to go out a lot so I guess I wouldn't know."
"Well, I've been there many times, since my home was close by," Izuku joined. "I still go there. It's relaxing."
The four continue to chat as they approached the beach. Just in time too.
The water glistened, reflecting the rays of the sun. The sky seemed to burst in an array of colours of orange and pink and blue and red, extending past the horizon. The illusion of the sun moving downwards into the sea that was ready to swallow it whole was like a beautiful display of artwork. The sky then flickered into darkness.
"Woah.." Todoroki muttered, gaping. Uraraka grinned widely.
Izuku smiled slightly. "It's one of those things you won't really see anywhere else."
"Very impressive, indeed," Iida said, adjusting his glasses.
The four stood in silence as the last remaining colours drained from the sky. They spoke softly with each other as they returned back to UA. Iida sent a text on the group chat that they were returning.
As they approached the dorms, Todoroki sighed. "I really can't believe you forgot, Midoriya."
Izuku blanched. "So I was forgetting something..?"
Todoroki nodded and Uraraka huffed.
So now Izuku was worried. Was it something important? But then why did they wait to the end of the day? Maybe they were expecting him to remember but he didn't for a whole day. Oh god, were they angry at him? Maybe he should apologize? But then that might make it worse and they might get angrier and it could all go so wrong-
"SURPRISE!!"
Izuku shrieked. Had he walked in without realizing?
The room was colourfully decorated with streamers and balloons. Izuku looked around questionly. The feeling of forgetfulness returned.
His mother walked up to him with a watery smile. "Happy Birthday, Izuku."
And then it clicked.
"How did I manage to forget my own BIRTHDAY??!!!"
Iida shrugged, shifting his glasses. "While it certainly helpful for us to plan this party, it was a bit hilarious seeing you trying to piece things together sometimes."
Izuku sighed. "Still, how does one forget their own birthday! The signs were there!"
"Plot convenience?" Kaminari suggested, to which Sero hushed him, as if it was a big secret.
Ashido joined in. "Well, that was then! This is NOW! And I believe it's time to PAR-TAY!!" She whooped.
"Until 10 minutes before curfew hours of course, so we can clean up," Iida added. It was questionable to say whether the rest heard, as they had joined Ashido in whooping.
Izuku was dragged about the dorms but has the time of his life. From playing board games ("I am never playing Monopoly ever again.") To the classic truth or dare ( Izuku was having a major conflict. He was dared to kiss the cutest person in the room but he couldn't decide because everyone was cute!) There never seemed to be a dull moment.
Izuku sat on the ground, watching with amusement as his friends played the hell-spawned game: Twister.
"Left foot, blue," he said, a chuckle following as he watched Mineta completely and utterly struggle, while yelling I'M AT A DISADVANTAGE HERE (the small boy is surprisingly competitive) and Jirou yelling back to SUCK IT UP, LOSER. (In the end, no one won as they all topple over each other).
"Izuku!" His mother called. He turned around to see Katsuki holding a chocolate cake (begrudgingly) and setting it down on a table. Inko lit the candles.
"Happy Birthday, nerd," Katsuki said, glaring at the boy (he was getting a lot of mixed signals. Was Kacchan being nice, or planning his execution for being dragged into doing this?).
"Kacchan," Izuku's eyes widened.
Katsuki tched and stomped away. This was somehow good enough for Izuku, as he smiled at the leaving boy.
Inko beckoned her son to sit at the table in front of the cake. Izuku stood up and went over to his mother.
"Look at you, you're all grown up now," Inko sniffed and smiled, wiping a tear from her eye. "Soon you'll be saving so many people, just like you always wanted. I'm so happy for you, Izuku!" Inko held his hand. "Just know that I'll always support you, no matter what! But I better not get anymore calls that you're breaking bones again!"
Izuku smiled, chuckling. "You don't have to worry mom. I'll make sure I don't break anything as much as possible."
Inko smiled. "I'll take your word for it. Now sit! You need to blow out the candles!" Inko ushered Izuku to sit.
His classmates surrounded him and began singing Happy Birthday to him, though at various pitches, so the song sounded like a mess.
"Make your wish!"
"Hurry hurry! I want a slice of cake already!"
"Stop rushing him Jammingway. I'm still surprised you haven't accidentally fried your brain when we played Scrabble!"
"Hey! I'm not that bad! I don't work good under pressure!"
Like little kids, they ushered the birthday boy to make his wish. Izuku thought for a moment on what he wanted to wish for.
He never really had these kind of birthday parties growing up. The last time he had one with other people was when he was four. After that, people rejected his invites and he would just spend the day hanging out with his mom.
But now, he has friends (that alone is almost enough to bring him to tears), classmates who actually want to get to know about him and hang out with him.
Izuku closed his eyes and blew out the candles.
His friends cheered and joked around and the cake was cut.
"What did you wish for, kero?" Tsuyu asked Izuku, holding her slice of cake.
Izuku grinned, "Well, that's a secret!"
Everyone munched on their cake and had an enjoyable time. There were nice, long conversations, embarrassing stories ("MOM!" "Oh Izuku, I just couldn't resist."), and other simple yet fun games.
Even so, everything must come to an end. Inko soon left and the students had to clean up and get ready to go to bed by curfew.
Izuku looked at his friends, who chatted quietly yet actively. The happy smiles on their faces made him feel warm inside. He thought back to what he wished for.
I wish for more happy moments like these. Hanging out with my friends, sparring together and becoming heroes together. Yeah, I wish for a happy future with everyone.
Izuku smiled. This will do just fine.
___________
Happy Birthday Izuku :')

Just a Crush: Ch. 30
Hello, my lovely readers. Are you ready to find out how this fic ends? On with the show…
Chapter 20: It Started Out that Way, And This is How it Ended
Davina Claire's birthday would be marked by a series of events that would change the trajectory of Kol Mikaelson's life, forever. Neither of them knew that the day they got up. Kol hoped to find some time—during Davina's birthday—to snag the girl and continue talking her out of her up-coming wedding. Too bad it looked like Lucien Castle had other plans for them both.
Leaving the room he'd been assigned to the day he arrived in London, Kol made his way down the hall and ran into Ava. "Mikaelson, you've got a job today." Her lips titled into a smirk and Kol thought little of her smirk. She tended to show a bit of cruelty when planning a new mission. Kol believed that although she did not know the men and women she was assigned to "deal with," she felt a certain glee in the activity.
"Right. Of course. We'll be back before the celebration." Kol chose to not make this into a question. He would make his own mission to complete the day's task and to return to headquarters on time.
Ava simply smirked and turned her back on him. Silence appeared at the end of the staircase. His typically stoic expression on his face. Kol inclined his head. He thought he heard the sound of Davina's laughter, coming from down the hallway and then the sound of her best friend, Josh Rouza. Josh must be here for the party.
Ava let out a loud cough. "Are you going to drag your feet the whole way?" she called to Kol.
Glancing at his, well, colleague, did not seem like the right word but it would do. "You know how I love our time together." He followed Ava out of the front door and toward a parked car. Not a company vehicle. Most of those came in a variety of colors, trying to fit, never anything too remarkable.
Silence brushed past Kol and took a seat in the front. Ava took the seat behind the wheel. With a shrug, Kol dutifully slipping into the back of the car. Looked like his partners would be taking the lead. Well, this was fine by Kol. He wished not to dirty his hands today.
The drive took them to London's East End and Kol exited the car last. Most of the people that his team picked up would not set one foot in a neighborhood like this one. However, Ava marched her heeled boots up a side staircase. Silence stood to one side. He did not look at Kol but Kol knew from prior experience that he was expected to follow Ava, with Silence right behind him.
They entered through a side door. Ava walked down a set of metal steps and drew a large door open to a loft style room. The room itself held little of note. Empty boxes. A table. Some chains. Oh, goody. But their intended target must have taken off for parts unknown because no one else was there.
"Well, it looks like we're late to the party. Too bad. I was so looking forward to watching what you planned for the poor fool." Kol turned to leave when he found Silence standing in front of the door. "I'm sorry. Am I missing something here?" Kol inquired, in a tone much more cheerful than he felt.
"Oh, no, Kol." Ava called back and Kol turned sideways, so he could eye both Silence and Ava at the same time. "You're just in time."
"Oh, so this is how Lucien decided to end our time together. No farewell message? No casual visit to tell me 'this is the end of our time together?'" Chuckling, Kol waved his hands. "Let's dance then, shall we?”

Single Dad Life (Hamilton)
Squeal to: Remember Me and He used to mine
Hamilton POV
March 8, 2009
Today was an experience day for me since it would hit the mark that Eliza abandoned me and our eight children four months ago. I must admit it was hard for me to cope with the idea of me being a single dad with such a large amount of children. It was difficult from the beginning since many men and women would often laugh or create rumors behind my back. There has been a time where I wanted to leave myself but I couldn’t. I didn’t dare to leave my children behind like my father did when I was barely ten years old. And I won’t dare traumatize my children anymore after their mother abandoned them. How could a mother like Eliza leave her family behind while only leaving a note that said  “I’m leaving” without an explanation? I continue asking myself that question until it didn’t matter to me anymore. Even my children just accepted that their mother will never come back and I know that feeling.
Anyway, I shouldn’t be getting off sidetrack. Today was one of the most experience days since Philip and Angelica decided to have a paint war during art class at school. It was a disaster when their principal call me during work. One sight of those two in the principal office, I have to stop myself from bursting out laughing. They were the colors of the rainbow from head to toes. Some of their classmates were cover in paint as well but not nearly as bad as Philip and Angelica. It was quite funny in a way in which I have to take a picture of them in the principal office in which the young man didn’t hesitate to smile while my eldest children were blushing of embarrassment.
It wasn’t easy scrubbing the paint off of them but after washing them from almost two hours, I manage to get all the paint off. I guess that’ll be the last time those two will ever do anything mischievous at school for the time being. Then again they’re Hamilton’s after all and they won’t hesitate to start another incident or memories at school again. Until then I must end this entry for the night

April 12, 2009
Whenever you needed a good five minutes nap just to take a break from your kids. Yeah, biggest mistake I’ve ever made. I forgot the most important number one rule of being a parent. When the kids are quiet, you know that they’re doing something shady. Them being quiet should've been my first clue but nope my lazy ass brain told me to sleep. And so I did but only a moment not even a minute later I see PJ, my youngest child cover in chocolate cake all over his face and clothes. I spring up off the couch and race toward the kitchen. I’ve forgotten that younger quadruplet had the day off from school and put them to nap. I know that they’re 7 years old and are too for naps but hey they’re my children!
But anyway as I soon I step into the kitchen before me was John and William eating the chocolate cake their bare hands. As for my daughter, Eliza was cover in chocolate cake all over her dress and face as well. As they saw see standing there in horror they were like a deer in the headlight before giving me those puppy eyes. I sigh in defeat before laughing a little before taking a picture of them sitting around the destroyed chocolate cake.
After washing my children and putting their clothes in the washer, I have to bake another chocolate cake and a spare one this time. I have to make sure that the children don’t get them this time. Being a single dad has it ups and down but it’s those memories that count. And this event will be one of them. Until then my friend, see you next month

I...I can’t believe it. After picking up the children from school on the way home. I got a phone call from Nevis Don’t worry we were out eating at a local McDonald. I don’t condone talking or texting on the phone while driving. Those can’t wait but another person life can’t. Speaking another living person in fact while my children were running around on the playground as I receive a call from Nevis. My home island where I grow up before coming to the United States. The people that I kept in contact with is a priest from a local church that always guides me during my high school and college year. As I answer it I recognize a voice that I thought disappears from my memory forever. It...It was my brother whom I thought died during the hurricane many years ago.
My oldest brother...James Hamilton Jr is still alive after there years. Tears were streaming down my face as I believe that he was gone from my life forever. Now, he’s alive and well but can’t come to the United States since it cost a large amount of money. I’ll be willing to help out but knowing my brother he would decline it but we’re both stubborn with each other. I thought it would be nice for my children to see their uncle at Nevis basically my home island. They get to play on the beach and see more where their father come from beside knowing that I’m from the Caribbean. After having a long but wonderful hour of having a conversation with my brother. We said our goodbyes and we love each other before hanging up.
Philip and the others were curious about why their Daddy was crying before telling them about their uncle. They were so excited knowing they’re going to see my brother in Nevis. I would be lying if I said that I didn’t miss my home country. I miss the smell of the sea and the sand between my toes. James and I always swim around the coral reef for a moment until returning back to shore. I’m glad that my dearest brother is still alive since deep within my heart I pray that he’s alive out on Earth somewhere. Now, we’ll be reunited in Nevis our home. Until then, I have to rest for the night, my dear friend.

June 12, 2009→July 20, 2009
The children and I had an excellent time in Nevis where once I saw my brother who changes a lot recently. He has gotten taller and muscular where I’m a bit muscular but still short thought which I hated though. Still, I didn’t hesitate running my brother as we hugged each other tightly. We share a few tears of our own before my children introduce themselves to him. He given me are you crazy? Look on his face when seeing all eight Hamilton’s before. Nevertheless, he loves them endlessly since he got along very well with William who hasn’t talked much since we sang our family lullaby. It was hard for him the most out of all eight children since he loved Eliza dearly. His anger issue has declined and went depress mode which worries me and made me sign him up for a therapist. Anthony Ramos is a nice young man and William really enjoy his company. It's weird how he has the same name as one of our founding father.
Still, William and James have a very strong bond where all my children were excited to stay at our old own. Turns out James has repaired the entire house himself after returning back to Nevis nearly ten years ago. Apparently, he was searching for me the entire time but had no luck until meeting up with the priest that took me him and gave James my phone number. I guess faith has brought us back together as a family. I remember the girls making a sand castle. As for James and John decided to bury William in the sand, don’t worry his head was sticking up. While James and I taught Philip how to swim around the ocean. They collected a few seashells. It was quite the entertainment when a large hermit crab pinch it claws on James' nose.
I couldnt stop laughing as James was running back and forth while trying to take the hermit crab off his nose. The kids were giving us weird looks like we’re insane but can’t say I blame them. The crab did fall off after James trip and land on the sand. Luckily, I record the whole event and took some pictures of it. Not to mention that it also reaching my youngers quadruplet birthday and so James and I decided to throw them a camp birthday celebration. They had such a great time, with all the games they made and the pinata we made for them. Last but not least is when we saw a couple of shooting stars. Just laying down on the sand watching the night sky on the beach of Nevis is truly special and memorable. Remind me and James of when Mom took us here and star gaze after our father left. Perhaps my children needed to see this after all of what happens between Eliza and us.
I’m not sure what will happen if my ex-wife does return to us but I can’t and won’t forgive her. I shouldn’t be discussing her right now. This is a happy moment for both me and my family. Whereas my brother is able to get into the United State with the help from the priest. We made a sole promise that every summer vacation we would spend our time in Nevis where the children can get away from the city and enjoy the beauty of the sea. The hometown of Nevis..our beloved home. I shall tell you more then my dear friend.

> This year, once again, I shall get my hands on every chocolate in this world.
> To reach my goal, I shall head to that place first.
> I’ve suceeded in obtaining a large amount of chocolate from the Mukami household.
> Those fools. This year again, they left it outside on a cart. It’s almost as if they are asking for me to take it off their hands.
> Well then, I’ll head home and take my time savoring these. I’m sure they’re sweet, delicious chocolates. I’m looking forward to this.

> To get back at them for the super spicy chocolates, I shall be gifting everyone marshmallows filled with plenty of this drug
> I’ll visit the source of all evil, the Mukami household first. I hope they all eat this and feel the shame of speaking the truth
> Haah…
> I’m exhausted. Hurry up and come to my side

December 24, 2020 (Christmas)

Understanding The Bible - A Practical Guide To Each Book In The Bible - Part 29
Written by: PETER KREEFT
SIX
________
The Gospel of the Holy Spirit: Acts
Christians in the first century were called “these men who have turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6). How did they do it? How can we do it again?
The Acts of the Apostles is like a mystery and adventure novel. The mystery is how twelve men who were mostly peasants and fishermen changed the world more than any other group has ever done. What was their secret? The adventure moves through life-and-death situations, black magic, real miracles, murder, shipwreck, trials, torture, stoning, prison, earthquake, encounters with angels, conspiracy, and conversion. It leaves you breathless, like an Indiana Jones movie.
Two of the three main characters are Saints Peter and Paul. Peter was the first pope, the “Rock” on which Christ promised to build His Church. Paul was like a whirlwind. He was the greatest missionary of all time. No person ever did more to Christianize the world than Paul. If we need more rocks and whirlwinds in the Church today, maybe we should go back to this book for our models.
But the main character in Acts is Jesus Christ. Acts is a continuation of Luke’s Gospel (read Lk 1:1-4; then Acts 1:1). Just as the Gospel is the story of Christ, Acts is the story of the Body of Christ, the Church.
This book brings us back to basics. It shows us what the Church most basically is: a conspiracy of love for a dying world, a spy mission into enemy-occupied territory ruled by the powers of evil, a prophet from God with the greatest news the world has ever heard, the most life-changing and most revolutionary institution that has ever existed on earth.
The Church is not just a human institution. It is not just an organization but an organism. Just as your body is not simply a bunch of cells, the Church is not simply a collection of human beings. Just as your soul is the life of your body, the Holy Spirit is the life of the Church.
Acts has been called “the Gospel of the Holy Spirit”. That’s why after Jesus’ ascension it begins with Pentecost, the birthday of the Church, the coming of the Holy Spirit. That same Spirit is the secret power that turned murderers into martyrs and sinners into saints. He planned and directed the whole plot of Acts. He empowered and inspired its human actors. The Holy Spirit is the real hero of the story. (Yes, “He”, not “it”. He’s a person, like the Father and the Son, not a “force”.)
The first part of Acts tells the story of the Church in the East, in Jerusalem and Antioch. The storyline centers on Peter, the Apostle to the Jews. The second part tells of the Church in the Roman West and centers on Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles. Together these two great saints-martyrs-evangelists-missionaries are the joint “pillars of the Church”.
Luke, the author, was Paul’s companion on his missionary journeys around the Roman world. That’s why he often uses “we” (for example, see Acts 16, 20, and 27). The action begins in Jerusalem and ends in Rome, the center of the ancient world, with Paul, a prisoner in the emperor’s household, making converts everywhere and waiting to be martyred.
How is this story of ancient times relevant to us and our world today? Our world is just as corrupt, just as hard and proud, just as violent, just as needy, as the world was then. This book gives us the pattern for turning it upside down again.
We have the same Church, the same power source (the Holy Spirit), the same good news, and the same last orders from our Lord, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28:19). No force on earth can stop us except our own laziness and lack of faith.
We need to recapture the forward-looking optimism of the apostles in Acts. After Jesus left them and ascended to Heaven, you would think they would now look back to the past, the glorious time when He had been with them. But no, they looked to the future, for the future was to be even more glorious. Jesus Himself had told them that it would be better for them if He left and sent them the Holy Spirit (Jn 16:7).
How could this be better? Wouldn’t it be better if we had Jesus still physically, humanly present? No. When He was here, His disciples still misunderstood Him. Only when He sent the Spirit could they begin the tremendous tasks narrated in this book.
Why? Because God the Father is outside us, and God the Son beside us, but God the Holy Spirit is inside us. (This is only a view of the roles of the three Persons of the Godhead; of course, there are not three Gods—one outside us, one inside us, and one beside us.)
Being inside another is maximum intimacy. Intimacy is what love aims at, and God is love. The whole Bible is the love story between God and His people, His Church. Acts begins the third and last and most intimate stage of all.
The Church is the most powerful force on earth not only because she has the highest ideal above her, but above all because she has the greatest power within her. This book shows us what that power can accomplish.
The Holy Spirit, the Church’s Power Source
Acts begins with Jesus’ ascension. But this is not the end of the story. It is the beginning. With a sense of mounting excitement, the reader turns, like the apostles, from the departing Jesus to the coming Holy Spirit.
The physical presence of Jesus wasn’t enough. If the Holy Spirit hadn’t come, Christians could never have won the world. Here is shocking evidence for that, in the form of one of the stupidest questions ever asked. After teaching His apostles for forty days the meaning of His Kingdom (1:3), Jesus gets this question: “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” (1:6). In other words, “Your kingdom is a political kingdom, a this-worldly kingdom, isn’t it? Are we finished with all this spiritual stuff now and can we get down to the ‘bottom line’ of kicking out those awful Romans and liberating our nation? That’s what you came for, right?”
Not until the Spirit came did they understand. Not until the Spirit came did they have the spiritual power to win hearts and minds. Jesus knew that. That’s why He told them not to go out to all the world and preach the Gospel, not yet (1:4-5). That would have been like trying to pull a plow with a kitten, or light up a city with a flashlight. There was a power shortage.
The Spirit is as necessary as Jesus. The Spirit is like a plug, Jesus is like electricity in the wires, and the Father is like the dynamo that generates the electricity. You need to plug into the power. Having an ideal, a blueprint, without the power to live it produces only a sense of failure, frustration, and guilt. Only God the Holy Spirit can empower us to live the life that God the Son lived and God the Father commanded.
That is the secret of the Church. That is the reason for her staying power, her enduring through centuries of persecution, her saints and martyrs, her profundity of doctrine, her infallibility and consistency throughout two thousand years. Nothing but God working inside her, not just outside her or beside her, nothing less than God the Holy Spirit as the soul of the Church, could perform this miracle in history.
Thus, this book, which is a history of the early Church, begins with Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. Just as God breathed His Spirit into Adam and turned mere “dust of the earth” into a man (Gen 2:7), so He again breathed His Spirit into a band of confused, weak human beings and turned them into the one and only thing on this earth that the gates of Hell themselves will never prevail against, the one thing we can be certain will last until the end of time: the Church, Christ’s own new Body.
You see the change the Holy Spirit makes most strikingly in Peter. Read all the passages in the four Gospels that refer to Peter, and you will see how confused and weak he is. Then read all the passages in Acts, beginning with his Pentecost sermon, that mention Peter. You see a new man, a real Rock for the first time.
His impromptu sermon on Pentecost converted three thousand people (2:41). It was so effective that after it was over, his listeners asked not, “What should we think?” but, “What should we do?” (2:37). When the great orator Cicero made a speech before the Roman senate, all the senators said, “How well he speaks!” But they remained seated. When the great general Demosthenes addressed his Greek troops, they stood up, clashed their swords upon their shields, and shouted, “Let us march!” Peter is now like Demosthenes, not Cicero.
Peter’s answer to their question, “What shall we do?” summarizes the whole Bible, all three parts of God’s plan for our redemption. First, the Old Testament prophets, culminating in John the Baptist, focus on one thing: “Repent.” Turn away from sin and back to God. Second, the Gospels show us the way to be incorporated into Christ and receive His forgiveness: “And be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” But there is a third part too: “And you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (2:38).
Then, as if he were looking over the heads of his immediate audience and down the centuries to us, he added, “For the promise [of the Holy Spirit] is to you and to your children and to all that are far off, every one whom the Lord our God calls to him”(2:39, emphasis mine).
A poor European family was immigrating to America. They had saved for years to buy the tickets. The only food they had with them for the journey was bread and cheese. After a few days, the little boy said to his father, “I can’t stand this any more. Nothing but cheese sandwiches. Please give me some money for some real food.” The father gave him his last nickel and told him to buy something in the ship’s dining room. (This was 1900.) The boy came back in two hours, fat and happy. “I had soup and steak and ice cream and pie. It was great!” “What?” the father asked. “Did you buy all that with a nickel?” “Oh, no, Dad. The food’s free. It comes with the ticket.”
The Church today is surviving on cheese sandwiches. The Holy Spirit is steak and pie. He’s part of the package deal, part of God’s plan for us. He comes with the ticket. The great things the Church accomplished in Acts can be done in our day, if we only had the power. That power is available for the asking. Read and pray Luke 11:5-13.
Peter, the First Pope, and Stephen, the first Martyr
Acts tells the dramatic story of the early Church—a Church that was very poor in material wealth and power, but very rich in spiritual wealth (full of saints and martyrs) and power (miracles).
At other times in the Church’s history, especially the Renaissance, it was just the reverse. The Church had amassed great worldly wealth but had gotten weak and corrupt. That contrast is the point of the story of a Renaissance pope who was proudly showing a saintly friend all the riches of his treasury. “See?” he said, “Peter can no longer say, ‘I have no silver or gold.’ ” “No,” replied the friend, “but neither can he say, ‘In the name of Jesus, rise and walk!’ ”
The pope and his friend were referring to the story in Acts 3. Peter and John, newly filled with the power of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, go into the temple and see a man who had been lame from birth. The man was begging for money, but instead of material wealth he found spiritual wealth in Peter, who said to him, “I have no silver or gold, but what I have, I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!”—and the man rose and walked.
The Renaissance pope said, “Peter can no longer say, ‘I have no silver or gold’ ” because the chain of popes stretches back to Peter, whom Christ appointed when He said, “On this rock I will build my church” (Mt 16:18).
But the name Peter does not seem to fit him in the Gospels. It means “rock”, but Peter is hardly “Rocky” before Pentecost. He is more like “Sandy”. Peter is weak and vacillating, misunderstanding Christ, making mistakes (like fighting with his sword in the Garden of Gethsemane), and cowardly (denying Christ three times during His trial). Naming him “Rocky” is a joke, like naming a skinny man “Fats”.
Yet in Acts Peter fulfills Jesus’ prophecy about his name. He becomes a real rock. He leads the infant Church through persecutions, uncertainties, and hard times (let’s not romanticize the early Church!), just as all his successors have done. (Only later were they called popes.)
Acts centers first on Peter. Then, beginning with chapter 9, it focuses on Paul. In both parts, we see the Church growing in the face of problems that would have destroyed any merely human institution.
Peter’s boldness in Acts contrasts strikingly with his former cowardice. He dares to say straight out to the people who called for Jesus’ crucifixion—and who might well have called for Peter’s too—“[You] killed the Author of life” (3:15). But he adds, “I know that you acted in ignorance” (3:17). When commanded by the authorities to stop preaching the Gospel, he answered, “We must obey God rather than men” (5:29), and “we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard” (4:20). His message is clear and uncompromising: “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (4:12).
Everyone wondered at Peter and the other apostles, just as they had wondered at Jesus: “Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they wondered, and they recognized that they had been with Jesus” (4:13). Everyone who met Jesus wondered at Him: His friends (whose wonder turned to worship), His enemies (whose wonder turned to bitter hatred), and those who just didn’t know what to think. The wonder of Jesus now rubs off onto the apostles.
In chapters 6 and 7, we find the story of Stephen, the first Christian martyr. Wherever Christianity is strong, there have always been martyrs; wherever there have been Christian martyrs, Christianity has been strong. “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church”, said Tertullian, a prominent thinker of the early Church.
It’s not that Christianity teaches that you should seek out martyrdom, but that whenever the world sees great Christians, it fears and hates them, as the decayed tooth hates and fears the dentist, or the cancer fears the surgeon.
Jesus promised, many times, in the Gospels, that His followers would be hated, persecuted, and martyred, just as He was (see Jn 15:18-20; 16:33; 16:2; 17:14; Lk 6:22; Mt 10:22; 24:9).
In those parts of the world in which the Church has been persecuted in this century, she has become stronger: China, Russia, Poland, former East Germany, and Czechoslovakia. But wherever being a Catholic is easy, the Church becomes weaker: France, Holland, England, former West Germany, America, Canada, and even Italy.
After fifty years of China welcoming Christian missionaries (1905—1956), there were only two million converts. But after thirty years of persecution under Mao Tse Tung, there were an estimated twenty-five million Christians in China by 1986.
The martyr Stephen does not mince words or beg for mercy. He sounds like an Old Testament prophet (see 7:51-53). Yet as he dies under the stoning of the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem, he prays, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them” (7:60), just as Jesus prayed on the Cross, “Father, forgive them” (Lk 23:34). This combination of toughness and love runs throughout the Bible, for it is what God Himself is like: neither wimpy nor nasty. The apostles are like Jesus now, for they are filled with His Spirit. This is the power that fueled the Church like a rocket ship through history.
The Conversion of Paul (Acts 9)
What happened in Acts 9 is crucial for the history of the Church and the world that it was about to convert and change. It is the conversion of Paul, the greatest Christian missionary of all time, the one who more than any other single individual after Christ was responsible for converting half the world. Most of the rest of Acts is about him, and most of the rest of the New Testament after Acts is written by him (13 or 14 epistles). This chapter tells how Saul became Paul.
God changed his name and his life. As we saw with Peter, only God can change your name, for the ancient Jews did not think of a name as a mere label given by parents, but as signifying your real, true identity, which only God can give you.
Like Abram (Abraham), Jacob (Israel), Simon (Peter), and Saul (Paul), we all are destined to have a new name if we are on the road to Heaven (see Rev 2:17). This is a name we do not yet know; only God knows it. Do you think the change that happened to Saul on earth in Acts is great? You are destined for an even greater change in Heaven.
Let’s look at Saul before his conversion first, since the rest of Acts centers on Paul after his conversion.
The first thing we learn about him is that he was present at the stoning of Stephen, the first Christian martyr (chap. 7). He watched the coats of the men who threw the stones. And he consented to his death (8:1).
The next thing we hear is that he “was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison” (8:3). The “dragging” was literal. The fact that he also put women in prison was especially cruel and unusual.
We would call this man a “religious fanatic” and “bigot” and probably dismiss him as hopelessly wicked. But that just shows how different our thinking is from God’s. God picks out this man to become an apostle, a missionary, and a saint.
Why? Because God always surprises us. Throughout the Bible, He never does the expected. He often chooses what seems foolish in the eyes of the world to shame the worldly wise (see 1 Cor 1 on this, especially v. 27). We constantly forget that God’s work does not fit human expectations.
Also, no one, however hate-filled and bigoted, is hopeless. If God can convert and save a murderer, do you think your sins are too much for him to handle?
A religious fanatic at least has passion. He’s moving in the wrong direction, but at least he’s moving. It’s easier to move a car to the right if it’s already moving to the left than if it’s not moving at all.
God never made a saint out of a wimp. He wants lovers because He is love. He does not want wrongly directed love, but he does want love, not laid-back, “cool”, blase, detached, uncaring laziness.
At the beginning of chapter 9, we find Saul “still breathing threats and murder against the disciples”. But on his way to Damascus to search for Christians to throw into prison, he is literally knocked off his high horse: “Suddenly a light from heaven flashed about him. And he fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’ And he said, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And he said, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting’ ” (9:3-5).
Saul must have been absolutely and totally dumbfounded. He had thought he was serving God and doing God’s will by persecuting Christians. He had thought Christians were the worst blasphemers in the world, because they worshipped a human being who claimed to be God. Now God—the God Saul served with misdirected passion—speaks to him and says he is persecuting Him!
When Saul humbly asked, “Who are you, Lord?” that may well have been the first time in his life he admitted a mistake. (Fanatics are not usually humble.) And what a mistake! He didn’t even know who God was—the God he worshipped and served, the God in whose name he was persecuting Christians. Saul suddenly gets an open mind. And into that opening steps Christ.
Notice the amazing fact that Jesus said to Saul that Saul was persecuting Him, even though Jesus was now ascended and in Heaven. For Saul was persecuting the Church. What a dramatic way to learn the identity of Christ and His Church!
When Paul later wrote in Ephesians 5 that Christ is the “Head” and the Church is His “Body”, he meant this just as truly as the thing between your ears is your head and the thing it is perched on top of is your body.
Jesus had said to His disciples, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it not to me” (Mt 25:45). “Truly, I say to you” is a formula for “I really mean this, don’t water this down, it’s no exaggeration.” So when we snub or exploit or abort our fellow human being, we snub or exploit or abort Jesus Christ.
Paul’s conversion did not take him out of the war he had been fighting, but it put him on the other side and changed the weapons from physical to spiritual ones and from hatred to love. Christ chose Paul to suffer for Him rather than inflict suffering (9:16). Shortly after he is converted, those who had commissioned him to kill Christians (9:2) try to kill him (9:23).
To be converted is to become more like Christ. Christ did not fight, but He did not avoid a fight either. He went right into the center of the fight—where good and evil cross—and suffered on that Cross. Now Paul is ready to follow Him. Are we?
If you were brought to trial on the charge of being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?
How Big Is Christianity? Acts 10—15
We take for granted today that Christianity is universal, for everyone. Acts 10-15 shows how this was not so obvious at first to the early Christians. Most of them were Jews. Judaism had always been a special divine revelation, for Jews only. We do not realize what a great shock it was to recognize that now, for the first time in history, the knowledge of the true God was to spread throughout the whole world.
Orthodox Jews, who believe in a real Messiah to come, do not prosyletize or send out missionaries to make converts, because their Old Testament prophets said that the knowledge of God was to “cover the earth as the waters cover the sea” only when the Messiah comes. And they do not believe that the Messiah has come yet (Jews who are not Orthodox do not usually believe in a literal Messiah, and they do not prosyletize either, but for other reasons.)
God had to teach this surprising new truth of Christianity’s worldwide destiny to the two “pillars of the Church”, Peter and Paul, in dramatic ways. He knocked Paul off his horse and shone a great light from Heaven on him to show him that Christianity was not a heretical sect but the truth for everyone (chap. 9). The fact that God would now reveal Himself to everyone, Gentiles as well as Jews, through Christ, was so shocking to Paul that he called it a great “mystery” in Ephesians 1:9-10 and 3:3-6.
God had to shatter Peter’s narrowness too. He did this by sending him a strange vision (chap. 10) of a great sheet let down from Heaven with both kosher and non-kosher animals in it, commanding him to eat them all, contrary to Jewish dietary laws. The age of the law was over; Christ had begun the age of grace.
Even though it was not easy for Peter to change his lifelong habits, he was open to God’s leading (10:28-29, 34-35; 11:17) because he had been filled with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Peter now follows where his Master leads. Ever since this first pope, the Spirit has led the popes, and through them the Church, where He wants them to go.
Catholics believe in a single, visible Church. From the beginning, the single, visible Church has had authority over all Christians. This is evident in Acts 15 with the question of whether Gentile converts had to be circumcised and made Jews before they could be baptized and made Christians (see 15:5-6, 22-30). Peter clearly assumed a leading role and was the main speaker at this first Church council. Their decision is expressed in words claiming divine, not just human authority: “It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us” (v. 28). From the beginning, there was one Church for the whole world.
Also from the beginning there were divisions and disputes within the Church. Paul and Barnabas were good men (see 11:24; 15:37-40), yet they had an angry argument and separated. Internal divisions are much harder for the Church to endure than external persecutions. Yet she endures both, for even the gates of Hell will never prevail against the Church Jesus built on the rock (Mt 16:18).
In chapter 12 King Herod kills James and imprisons Peter. But God has other plans for Peter, and no human force can confine God’s plans. An angel frees Peter from prison, just as Psalm 91:11 and Revelation 3:7-8 promise.
This same wicked King Herod is struck dead when he blasphemously accepts the title of “a god” (Acts 12:21-23), just as Ananias and Sapphira were struck dead in chapter 5 when they lied to God. The armies of the supernatural world, both good and evil, are encountered in these extraordinary incidents, breaking through into our world. Another example of this is Elymas the Sorcerer (13:8-11), whose spiritual blindness breaks out in physical blindness. These are not fanciful myths but real miracles, told in a matter-of-fact, eyewitness style.
Acts is the history of a spiritual warfare between supernatural good and evil, Christ and Antichrist, powers from Heaven and Hell. The spiritual war becomes physical when Christians are persecuted. For instance, Paul is stoned almost to death (14:19) and later imprisoned (chap. 16).
Does the Gospel produce such reactions today? Indeed it does—at least wherever the true Gospel is preached, instead of some mild, popular, watered-down part of it.
Almost no one hates or persecutes you if you preach those parts of the Gospel that are popular today, such as peace, justice, compassion, and social action. But you are often hated and rejected today if you dare to say such unpopular things as these:
  ■ that Jesus is not just one among many equal religious figures, but the only true God;
  ■ that sin, judgment, and Hell are real;
  ■ that sexual sins, like other sins, are really sins and need to be repented of and turned away from;
  ■ that Christianity is not a moral fable but a supernatural, miraculous fact; or
  ■ that there is objective truth and objective values, that people can be wrong, that “true for me” isn’t enough.
The methods of persecution have changed. They don’t stone believers today. They ostracize them socially and censor them in the media. The media (especially the movies) nearly always portray Christians as bigoted, rigid, harsh, intolerant, narrow-minded, and stupid. These are some of the stones thrown today: word-stones. But they cannot kill the truth, just as they couldn’t kill Paul. Media censorship can’t imprison the truth, just as Peter (chap. 12) and Paul and Silas (chap. 16) could not be imprisoned. When God opens doors, no one can close them.
God opened Gentile doors only after He gave the Jews the first opportunity. Wherever Paul went, he preached the Gospel first to the Jews (see Rom 1:16). Acts 13 tells how he did this at Antioch, showing how Jesus fulfilled the Jewish prophets, Jewish Scriptures, and Jewish history. A Jew who accepts Jesus as the Messiah today, just as in the first century, does not become a Gentile but a completed Jew.
But Paul’s hearers reacted with envy and tried to kill him. In the first century, Jews in authority sometimes tried to kill Christians. Once Christians became part of the power structure, they often tried to kill Jews. No one has a monopoly on evil.
It was ironic that most first-century Jews rejected Christ while many Gentiles accepted Him, for God had entrusted His most complete revelation to the Jews. They should have known God better than anyone else and recognized Christ, for “like Father, like Son” (see Jn 8:19; 5:39).
Acts 17: How Christianity Went West
Acts 17 tells us why we in the Western world know about Christ today, as much of the Orient does not. It tells the dramatic story of why Christianity went to Europe rather than Asia—an event that changed the next two thousand years of world history.
It also tells the story of the first meeting of Christianity and Greek philosophy. These were the two strongest and most long-lasting spiritual forces in the ancient world. They are the two forces that have influenced the Western world more than any other. And they are the two forces from the ancient world that met and married and made the next great era of history, the Middle Ages.
The Holy Spirit was directing history by directing the apostles. In Acts 13:2, Luke writes, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul (Paul) for the work to which I have called them.” (Notice how real and personal the Holy Spirit is. He is not just a force but a real Divine Person, who speaks and commands specifically and concretely. If the apostles had not been open and obedient to Him, God’s plan for human history would not have been fulfilled. God uses human instruments; we the Church are His hands and feet.)
In Acts 16:6, Luke writes that they had “been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia”. (“Asia” here means what was called “Asia Minor”, that is, modern Turkey.) If the apostles had insisted on their own plans instead of following the Holy Spirit, they would have gone East with the Gospel instead of West. If they had done that, Europe would probably have remained pagan, Asia rather than Europe and America would have become the Christian continent, and we would probably not be Christians today.
This didn’t happen, because Paul obeyed a dream God sent him, the “Macedonian vision”: “A vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia [northern Greece] was standing beseeching him and saying, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.’ And when he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them” (16:9-10).
So Paul worked his way down through northern Greece to Athens, the capital city and the home of Greek culture and philosophy. Here now for the first time, the two great forces of Christianity and Greek philosophy meet.
Athens was full of idols, and this “provoked” Paul (chap. 16). The whole ancient world, except for the Jews and the Christians, worshipped false gods (1dols) and many gods (polytheism). Yet even here, Paul is able to make a positive point of contact.
The reason this could happen and the reason the Gospel took root there was that some of the Athenians were genuinely seeking the truth. They were honest, open-minded, and “devout” people (see 17:11-12, 17).
So when the philosophers (17:18) asked Paul to preach to them (17:20), Paul began by praising them for being “very religious” (17:22). Though their theology was wrong and idolatrous, their hearts were honest and seeking the truth about God.
In contrast, when Paul wrote to the Christians in Corinth, Greece’s second city after Athens, he severely criticized them for their pride and arrogance, even though their theology was much more correct than the theology of the Athenian pagans.
Like Jesus, Paul gave his different audiences what each really needed. Humble and ignorant truth-seekers like the Athenians need encouragement and knowledge. Proud know-it-alls like the Corinthians need a dose of humility and even insult (see 1 Cor 1:18-3:23).
In fact, what Paul says in 1 Corinthians 3:18 is almost exactly what the wisest, best, and most famous Greek philosopher Socrates had taught four hundred years earlier: true wisdom consists in recognizing that we are not wise. Some of the philosophers Paul preached to in Athens had learned that Socratic spirit of humility and were thirsting for truth. Now finally their thirst was about to be quenched.
Socrates had been a stonecutter. He may have actually cut the very words Paul referred to in Acts 17:23 on the altar: “To an unknown god”, for he believed in one single God whom he did not claim to name or define, unlike most other Greeks, who believed in many gods, like Zeus and Athena.
Here now is the point of contact, like two wires crossing. Paul says something astonishing in 17:23: “The God you worship in ignorance, I now declare to you.” Paul says that these Socratic, God-seeking Greek pagans were already worshipping the true God just by seeking Him, even though they did not know Him.
Incidentally, this is a very strong reason for believing that pagans can be saved. As Christ promised, all who seek, find (Mt 7:8).
First Paul approves the Athenians’ initial step: admitting they did not know God and seeking Him. Then he takes them to the second step: he tells how God made Himself known to the Jews as the one supreme, perfect Creator and Father. Finally, he tells them about God incarnate, Christ the Son. It is a natural three-stage teaching that can be used as effectively with modern post-Christian pagans as it was used with ancient pre-Christian pagans by Paul.
It works because what was said by Pascal, the great seventeenth-century Christian philosopher, is true: “There are only three kinds of people: those who have sought God and found Him and now serve Him; those who neither seek Him nor find Him; and those who are busy seeking Him but have not yet found Him. The first are reasonable and happy, the second are unreasonable and unhappy, the third are reasonable but unhappy.” The Athenians were in the third class. They were reasonable and wise because they were seeking, but not yet happy because they had not yet found.
Everyone in the third class eventually gets into the first, unless Christ’s promise is a lie. But no one from the second class gets into the first. Only those who seek God, want God, and love God, find Him. We are saved by our love, not our knowledge; by our hearts being open to God. The pagan Western world was seeking God. That’s why it found God and was converted. The modern world can be reconverted too. All it has to do is seek, as honestly and humbly as the ancient Greeks, and the story of Acts can come alive again today.
