I think my favorite little parallel between Ascended vs Spawn Astarion has to be this little, probably even unintentional, detail in the epilogue:

I was thinking about the Chosen One, as I'm always doing, and... I realized something really disheartening.
Chosen has never won a fight while fighting for the right side.
His first fight with Alan? Right before he can teach him the lesson he deserved, he's captured and enslaved by Avast! for years. His second fight with Alan? He comes out on top this time, but it was that victory and the subsequent rampages that made the Dark Lord, his only ally, go off the deep end.
His grudge match with Dark? He's holding the advantage most of the fight, but is immediately overwhelmed when Dark puts on the wristbands. Even when he goes full bash brothers mode with Alan, the high point of their character arcs where they mutually forgive each other and work together as an incredible team, they lose to the ViraBot army. To add insult to injury, that practically nullifies his earlier win against the singular ViraBot.
The Mercs? We don't even see the fight that preceded it - we begin in media res with Chosen full-bore fleeing. His fight with Victim in the Box? What fight? That was a torture session where Victim was holding all the cards from the very beginning.
It just really has to sting. Imagine being THE strongest person in your universe 99% of the time, and one day, you look back and realize that every single time you were fighting for the right cause, you completely and utterly lost. Your only victories came when you were still a villain. You are a being created for and defined by your world-shaking strength, and you are always being overtaken by villains who are careful strategists, making concerted efforts to never give you a chance to breathe until you're worn down and defeated.
It gets hard to feel like you're living up to the name "The Chosen One".

Thinking about Pro-Hero Dynamight falling in love with a lawyer because he has to keep going into court to give witness statements.
It’s about the only thing he can tolerate when he has to take time out of his day, time that could be spent doing literally anything else other than giving evidence. Whenever he sees that you’re assigned to a case it’s as though his entire demeanour changes, instead of paying attention to the judge or the sentencing his focus is now on you across the room. Paying a little more attention whenever you start speaking to give your opening statements.
And when it’s his turn to approach the stand, he’s always a little combatative because he cherishes the way you scrunch your nose irritation whenever he tells you to repeat yourself, because you know from experience that he heard every fucking word.
You make it your mission to give everyone that can’t afford legal aid a chance at a fair trial, so you don’t discriminate who you counsel— something that irks Bakugou to no end when he finds out you’ve chosen to defend a scummy villain that he caught red-handed. Storming into your office after hours one evening— still in full hero costume and seething because he doesn’t want you to do it.

There’s something so important about Gillion - who never heals himself, who rushes into danger, who hides his wounds- facing death and realizing he isn’t unafraid as he was raised to be. He uses his magic on himself to help with the exhaustion, to keep his life intact. And still he tries to comfort Jay and Chip while he’s coherent, being realistic about his chances but refusing to make it painful. Wanting their possible last moments to be light, to be about seemingly inconsequential things, small favorites that still mean the world to him purely because they’re Chip and Jay’s favorites. And then when all is said and done, he makes a raccoon for Jay. He talks about raspberries for Chip. He uses his last saved up arcane energy to try desperately to stay awake, and it works, and it saves him in the final hour.
It’s just. There’s something about how he hasn’t had a chance to rest since the Feywild, really, truly rest. How this whole time he’s been down on himself and taking extreme risks. And now, at what might be the end of it all, he realizes he doesn’t want to die. He wants to live. And not to be able to save others, not to fulfill his destiny, not out of obligation to anyone else - but purely for himself. For all the little things. And though it’s not quite healing in the literal term, his nearly final act was spent trying to save himself - and it worked.
