Fuck JKR: How To Create A Harry Potter-Esque Aesthetic Without Any Harry Potter In It
So I saw a few posts from people mentioning that a reason people might be into Harry Potter is because of the aesthetic or atmosphere, and ya know what? I can't even argue that, because if there's one thing about HP, it's that it Sure Does Have Aesthetic And Atmosphere.
So! I'm gonna tell you how to STEAL ITS LOOK! Because:
JK Rowling considers ANY support of her work to be support of her politics.
Fan content/fan merch is still free advertisement for Rowling's work. YOU might not choose to give her money, but you can't be sure you won't pull people into the fandom who will.
Everyone should create more things that aren't tied to corporate-owned IP, period.
So. Most things in these films have an aged, antique look. You'll see a lot of brown hues, both on sets and on people's clothes. There's a lot of near-blacks (especially charcoals and walnuts) and lighter grays on the sets, especially from the third film onwards. (Wood is more often than not stained dark, while lighter hues are often provided by bricks or plaster.) The last two films use a lot of stormy blues and grays. Prisoner of Azkaban also emphasizes contrast between tones, which heightens a sense of texture. True black also appears throughout the films, such as on students' uniforms and many Death Eaters' outfits, and on the chairs in Malfoy Manor. White appears occasionally, especially on Hedwig, students' shirts, or during winter scenes, but pure white isn't otherwise really common. Paper or parchment is usually warm beige. There's also a lot of silver, gold, and brass, often appearing on things like dishware, tools, trinkets, Christmas baubles, and so forth. Bronze also comes up occasionally.
Reds, yellows, blues, and greens are pretty common throughout the films, even outside of Hogwarts, though you'll see just about every color somewhere. For example, orange is often found around the Weasleys, and orange, maroon, and purple feature in the divination classroom. Teal features prominently in Grimmauld Place (contrasted with saffron yellows).
Most colors aren't really super bright; a lot of the time they look a little faded, or like they're colored with natural dyes. If you use medieval illustrations to source your colors, or aim for earth tones and jewel tones, you'll be about right for a lot of what you see in the films. Bright colors are pretty rare; some of the brights we do see are in Honeydukes, Weasleys' Wizarding Wheezes, and certain magical effects, such as Floo fire.
A lot of light is provided by candles, torches, or fireplaces, which cast a warm yellow/orange light. Moonlight is represented by blue light in the first and second films. Blue light is also used for the Goblet of Fire and the penseive.
Another thing you gotta have in there is clutter. It should look kinda antique and give off a kind of magical or mystical atmosphere. Think books, storage jars, orreries, crystal balls, old lamps, antique clocks, vintage glassware, antique mirrors, old teapots, and little metal trinkets. (If you're trying to decorate a physical room, your stuff doesn't have to actually be antique, of course; antique-styled is fine.)
Texture is also very important, which can be represented with full or top grain leather book covers, stone walls, dents and scratches, cracks, embellishments, and embossing. Additionally, all damage and wear gives a sense of oldness to things. Stains and variegated colors also add interest. (If you're decorating a physical space, you might look into aging/distressing/antiquing techniques.)
If you want a space to look cozy, you don't really want bare or blank walls. Shelves, paintings, tapestries, and wallpaper can all help with that. Again, use brown, rather than black. Warm, yellow lighting will also help. If you lean toward blacks and cool lighting, you're going to have a colder-looking space.
Fashion in the wizarding world is extremely all over the place, ranging from stereotypical fantasy witch and wizard clothing, to pretty normal vintage clothing, to some wacky vintage-inspired looks, to the kind of fashion that would be put under the cozycore umbrella, to ordinary modern clothing. One thing that's absent is subculture fashion as we know it. (Bellatrix Lestrange does look kinda goth, but it's less a subculture thing, and more a "yeah we're putting our bad guys in fancy black stuff" thing.)
If you're trying to lean into the whole quirky/eccentric/old-fashioned kinda thing, you'll want to pass over the more modern and obviously synthetic type stuff. Also, patterns, textured fabrics, knits, mixed colors, lace, and other embellishments can add interest to outfits.
Architecture is also all over the place. Hogwarts is pretty medieval, while places like Diagon Alley give more Victorian vibe. The main thing is looking old fashioned and quaint.
To try and summarize all of that:
Browns. Lots and lots and lots of browns. Blacks and grays, too. Contrast between light and dark browns and blacks/grays.
More beige and gray than pure white; more charcoal gray and dark walnut brown than true black.
Among other colors, mostly earth tones and jewel tones. Very limited brights.
Polished metal and glass also add shininess.
Old-fashioned. Vintage. Antique.
Clutter, texture, patterns, variegation. Minimalist/clean aesthetic avoided.
Aged and distressed.
Lighting often yellow/orange due to coming from fire. Blue/teal light often coming from moonlight and certain magical light sources.
Now, here are some things we actually don't see. I'm not mentioning them to discourage you from using them if they're what you really want, but to inform you about them so you can consider whether they might throw off the vibe for you:
Green/purple/black combos.
Purple/silver/black combos. Pink/purple/teal combos.
Pink/black combos.
Orange/black combos.
Green/orange/purple combos.
Red/black combos.
Basically a lot of combos commonly associated with Halloween, witches, or vampires.
Big raw crystals. We see crystal balls now and then, but that's it.
Other natural items used as decorations - feathers, pinecones, sticks, etc. The one exception I can think of are the shells embedded in the walls of Shell Cottage.
Crushed velvet. Lots of fantasy uses this, HP films don't.
If you need inspiration, go look up medieval and renaissance diagrams and illustrations of stuff like the four elements, the zodiac, the solar system, and all that. Go look up alchemical symbols and emblems. Search up pre-WWII vintage ephemera. Go look up Victorian clipart. Look up stuff like botanical, zoological, and astronomical books and art from the 17th-19th centuries. Look up vintage wallpaper and fabric patterns. Look at vintage-style crafts. Research period architecture and fashion. Research European heraldry.
If you're wondering what exactly you're going to design around without Hogwarts and the Four Houses, here are some suggestions:
The four classical elements (earth, air, fire, and water)
The four seasons
Card suits - Tarot, French, whatever you want
Holidays - Halloween, Christmas, whatever
Fairy tales
Flowers
Mythical creatures
Bugs
Birds
Any other animals you like
Ecosystems
Your own original worldbuilding
So yeah, there ya go. You don't need to keep participating in HP to indulge in the aesthetic.
[NOTICE: Anybody who clowns on this post by making this about them and their childhood, patting themselves on the back about their chosen means of "ethical" participation, praising the fandom, or adding any other form of irrelevant bullshit is getting blocked. Also, I don't want to hear about PJO or Earthsea again for the millionth time, either.]

Synopsis:
Willow "Kinney" Rivers
I had to run.
Fleeing from Duke University was never in my mother's plans for me, but I had run out of options. I had no other choice than to break her trust. North Carolina had nothing left for me. In fact, it never had anything for my soul. I craved more. No - I needed more.
The University of Oxford was meant to be a fresh start for me as I began my Junior year. I had dreamt of Oxford for as long as I could remember, clipping out news articles that fled the US regarding England's renowned college and plastering them in my 'dreams' notebook. I had left all of my secrets behind me in the states, and this was my chance to recreate myself and become the person I was always meant to be.
However, my new roommate had other plans.
Jacob Elordi
I couldn't help myself. The moment I saw the brunette plastered on my friend's sofa, I knew she was mine. There was nothing that would stop me from taking her. Even Willow herself couldn't stop me. I needed her more than breathing, my infatuation morphing into obsession the longer she remained clueless to my presence.
I had made a promise to myself the mere second I caught a glimpse of her soft, innocent face. I would break her, rearrange her pieces, and make her need me more than she ever dreamt possible.
She will be mine no matter how long the chase is.
She will bow to me.
Even if I have to take matters into my own hands and get them bloody.
__________
> Hello everyone! I was filtering through Jacob Elordi fanfiction on AO3 and Wattpad with no luck of anything I found interesting enough with proper witting. I decided to take matters into my own hands and write one for myself and everyone else to enjoy.
> Please note this is a DARK ROMANCE that takes place in an alternate universe. Jacob is not famous and attends the University of Oxford in England along with many originally characters. And possibly Harry Styles later on because I’m a sucker.
> I am including a snippet of the prologue below so you can get a taste of my writing to see if you will enjoy it. I will be posting these on Wattpad.
> This story will be updated every Saturday.
__________
PROLOGUE
PREVIEW ONLY
Tumblr media
The door looms before me as I hold onto a box full of my personal items. The wood is a warm brown that teeters on the edge of orange. It makes me nauseous just looking at it. My stomach rolls as I reach for the black doorknob. The color of the metal clashes against the wood, causing me to inwardly cringe. It reminds me of Halloween in a not so aesthetic way. It's hideous.
The University of Oxford makes me feel nauseous in general as anxiety sinks it's nails deep into my stomach and claws it's way up my insides. As I push the door open to reveal my new living space, I stagger backwards at the smell of fresh paint and sawdust. The scent does nothing to calm my racing heartbeat as I walk through the threshold. I take a deep breath to rest my racing mind. The carpet is red and looks like blood that has been dried up for weeks. My stomach lurches again.
I'm not ready.
Leaving North Carolina was never in my mother's plans for me. As much as I'd always yearned to attend such a renowned, foreign school, she forced me to forget my dream the moment I could utter the word 'college'. She told me it would never happen, and that I had somewhere better to look forward to. My entire life bad been planned out for me before I was even born. I've never been my own person, and the thought of starting now — and what felt like a million miles away from my hometown — is nearly enough to knock me off of my feet.
I inhale shakily, my manicured fingertips drumming softly against the box in my hand as I walk into the room with a lag in my steps. I observe the room quickly, a frown gracing my lips as the same, ugly brown tone decorates the space before me. There's merely two beds on either side of the room with a desk at the foot of each one. The only other piece of furniture is the red sofa that rests between the two beds up against the wall. It looks to be a futon, and the color is nearly identical to the carpet that is glued to the floor.
I'm quick to set my cardboard container onto the table top of my desk before walking back to the hall and grabbing the very few bags of decor I had along with a carry on case. I wasn't much for packing heavily, and a fresh start was exactly what I wanted. Bringing my things from home felt like it would be a massive mistake especially since I had no other choice but to get away from that place. I didn't want to remember or relive any part of my past now that I was in England.
It seems as though I am the first one in the room. It resembles exactly what I believe an expensive asylum to look like, albeit with less tiling. The windows are articulate. They range from the floor to the ceiling but are designed in a 1930s architecture. The stone that surrounds each of the fourteen windows is weathered and cracking, giving off a medieval vibe to the otherwise mid century style. The room is very eccentric, and I can't decide if the colors are the worst thing I've ever seen or if they just remind me that I'm no longer at Duke — 'an Ivy League University of the South'.
I inhale sharply, forcing my mind into a state of relaxation as I begin to rummage through my things. I'm quick to place my fake plants along the bottom of the windowsill and on top of the provided desk. Once everything looks exactly the way I want it to, I allow myself a moment to look out the window and take in the scenery. We're at the back of the campus, in front of a wooded area that's currently bare due to the chilled air that makes it's way through Oxford.
I open the middle window, smiling as the cool air brushes into the room. The balcony that is laid out before me is just as weathered as the crowning around the windows. It's easily accessible, and I can't stop myself from picturing a warm coffee and a book accompanying me out here every morning.
As I climb back through the window, I see a flash of black at the entryway. I immediately turn to glance at the open door, instantly relaxing as I see a girl talk to another hall mate. She isn't dressed in black, but my mind plays tricks on me lately. I shake my head in annoyance at myself as I begin pulling out my soft green sheets. They're a shade between sage and pistachio, but not quite as blue. My teeth capture my bottom lip between them as I contemplate the correct color all the while covering the sheets with an oversized, white comforter.
Once my bedding looks perfect along with my white and green pillowcases, I can't help but immediately reach for a book. My clothing and school supplies can wait until tomorrow. My first class isn't until Tuesday morning, and it's currently Saturday afternoon. I release my hair from a brown claw-clip before sauntering to the sofa. I sniff the fabric that covers the seating quickly, making sure it's been clean before flopping onto it. My bare legs bend upward, swaying softly in the air as I lay my book out in front of me.
Just as I get deep into my romance novel, I feel a chill slide along my spine. As I glance up, I jump slightly. An embarrassing gasp escapes me. My quivering hand rests tenderly along my chest to cover my racing heart. I can't help the feeling of doom settling into my gut.
"Christ," I curse quietly, southern accent on full display, "you scared the shit out of me."

Here's my Star Trek Winter Gift Exchange (@startrekwintergiftexchange) for @raddocwrites! I hope you enjoy it (and sorry for posting so late)!
Their promt was: Seven & B'Elanna bonding platonically.
Here's the link on AO3 and full text is below that:
The Art of Conversation
Gen | 1.6K | No warnings | This is just a little scene set early- to mid-Season 4 of Star Trek: Voyager, when Seven has been part of the crew for a little while.
***
"One Rigellian sunrise," Neelix announced as he pushed a highball glass forward on his makeshift bar.
Two humanoid hands reached toward the drink. One was half-Klingon; one, half-Borg. Well... not Borg anymore.
"That's mine."
B'Elanna whipped her head around to face the stiffly-upright blonde in front of her. Her eyebrows shot up.
"Oh, Seven," she sounded discombobulated as she tried to correct the sternness of her speech. Her hair bobbed as she looked back at the cocktail.
"Wait, you're having a Rigellian sunrise?"
Effusions of orchids decorated the glass, as per Neelix's usual aesthetic, and enticing skewers of fruit (origin unknown) protruded from the top. The drink itself was a swirl of purple above and orange below-- a nearly deadly mix of liquors if Harry's reports could be trusted. He'd gone hard the previous night with some of the other Ensigns, on day one of Neelix's Crew Appreciation Festival. He had Beta shift this evening, and Tom had had to take a hangover draft to his room that morning just to get him vertical. B'Elanna was hoping her Klingon blood would hold her steadier than the humans.
Neelix smiled broadly from behind the mess hall counter he'd decorated with a colourful fabric table-skirt and some more flowers.
"Don't worry ladies," he interjected, "I've got another one coming right up!"
Seven of Nine eyed B'Elanna's face and body language, searching for answers.
"I was unaware that you had ordered the same drink," she offered, stiffly.
"Oh, well. Um, look," she scanned the room, hoping Seven would take the cocktail and go, "you can have this one if you like."
Seven took the proffered glass. "It looks... unlike other drinks I've had here." The flowers were intended to make it look nice, she guessed.
Neelix grinned as he shook a Boston shaker (newly-replicated and borrowed from an unwilling Tom) til beads of condensation began to appear on the stainless steel.
"That's because it's a cocktail, dear!"
"A cock...tail?" Seven looked mildly concerned.
Neelix leaned over the bar as if he had a secret to divulge. "It's a delicious mix of alcohol with fruit juice or bubbly liquids, and it puts the 'Festive' in 'Neelix's Crew Appreciation Festival'!"
He turned and scuttled to the back to fetch another highball glass.
"And," B'Elanna continued in a low voice, "it's about the only thing Neelix makes that actually tastes good."
She turned back to Seven, her eyes shining. "Don't tell him I said that."
"Here you are, a second Rigellian sunrise for our esteemed Engineering Chief! Now," he said, making a waving movement with his hands as a group of Ensigns came through the door, "go and enjoy the party, ladies! I'm going to have a lot more orders coming in very soon..."
"Well, see you!" B'Elanna called behind her with a shake of her bob. She swept past the crowd of Ensigns to find a table, greeting one or two bright eyed hopefuls as she passed by.
Seven looked at her drink. Now what was she supposed to do? Drink the drink, she guessed, but then what? What was everyone else doing? If she had been able to walk slowly enough she could have observed carefully, but the group of Ensigns were pushing into the bar and forced her out into the crowd. Out into open space.
How was it you were supposed to recognize other humans again? Human/non-human first (that was easiest), then shirt colour, hair colour, hair style, eye colour, skin tone... sometimes voice would give someone away. That's why B'Elanna was so easy to spot-- half-Klingon and that singular, shoulder-length bob. She was unmistakable.
"Give me a break. Did you follow me?"
Seven was shocked for a second. She guessed she'd been staring.
"Fine, just join my table. You look like a lost baby targ."
B'Elanna looked slightly steamed, but Tom was nowhere to be found (Seven had been warned about interrupting "dates"), so it seemed fine.
"I accept."
Seven sat, observing B'Elanna sipping from her straw. People were bustling around their table, but Seven was in her seat, like a ship in a hanger, her refuge from the crowds. Being so close to those she wasn't mind-linked with was still difficult.
She tried putting her mouth on the straw like B'Elanna had.
"It's not working."
"Huh?"
"The drink. It's broken. Yours is working."
The Chief's temper flared. "Oh for-- You're just putting your mouth on the straw, of course it's not going to work."
"Yes, that is what I'm doing," Seven remarked incredulously. This crew was so imprecise in their observations. Why could they not explain with more efficacy?
"What is it I'm expected to do?"
"Well, you just, you know..." she mimed sipping from the straw.
Seven blinked at her blankly. "I do not, regrettably. That's why I was asking for some direction."
B'Elanna practically rolled her eyes. "Um... look, why don't you just drink directly from the glass, Seven?"
She examined the glass. Removing some flowers would give her enough access to the rim. Yes. Satisfactory.
"That is satisfactory. I... thank you for your help. I am not yet accustomed to all the ways of consuming by mouth."
Her counterpart seemed to smirk.
"It sounds so great when you say it like that. Well, why not try it?"
She did.
B'Elanna reached over to slap Seven on the back as her coughing and spluttering cleared the aisle near their table.
"Maybe you should just stick to fruit juice for now. Neelix's experimental home brew is not exactly the thing you want to cut your teeth on."
"Cut my..." Seven spluttered, "...teeth?"
"It's an old earth expression. Stick to the fruit juice." Seven nodded, pushing the drink aside.
Not having anything to do, Seven looked around, trying not to closely observe B'Elanna sipping her drink.
"So how was your day?"
The redshirt passing by took half of B'Elanna's mouthful sprayed over his shirt before she regained control, hastily swallowing.
"I'm so sorry," she called after him, not bothering to wipe it off as that would obviously cause him more embarassment. It was perhaps more Klingon than human manners, but she still resisted being worn down into human ways.
"Are you well?" Seven queried B'Elanna. It seemed she was not the only one having difficulties consuming this liquid, she reasoned.
"Ah-- yes," B'Elanna responded, "What did you say just now?"
"I believe I asked you, 'How was your day?' Harry said it's a way of expressing interest in an interlocutor and a good way to begin a conversation."
B'Elanna snorted. "He said all that?"
"I paraphrased."
"Hmm," she sipped her half-empty drink, trying to decide if she was buzzed enough to take on this conversation. Ensigns were falling over after a few sips of Neelix's cocktails, but B'Elanna's constitution was proven to be made of stronger stuff.
"Well, okay. How was my day? Um... frustrating, to be honest. No one understands how important the plasma conduit cleaning is. Grunt work as it is, we need crew members that are relatively experienced to do it properly, especially with the eccentricities of design on this ship. I just can't have them continuously breaking down on--"
B'Elanna stopped short, her eyes drifting up to Seven.
"I'm sorry."
Seven looked confused. "For what?"
"I guess my day wasn't very interesting."
Seven tilted her head, "How do you mean?"
"Oh," B'Elanna shook her head, looking down at the plastic table-top, "Tom is always getting mad at me for talking about work too much. I'm supposed to talk about my 'feelings' or something."
"I was not uninterested in the topic at hand."
B'Elanna raised her head.
"Oh. Really? Usually when I talk about the plasma conduits, people run for cover." She stifled a laugh.
"I do not understand why they would run."
"The thing is," B'Elanna sighed, ignoring Seven's implied question while struggling to put her thoughts into simple terms, "usually when you talk about your day it's supposed to be an overview instead of focusing on one thing. Tom encourages me to mention positive as well as negative aspects of the day. Which I find... difficult."
She grimace-smiled. "It irritates Tom when I rant."
Seven considered for a minute. "Does Tom himself engage in this optimal behaviour you've described: 'mentioning the positive as well as negative'?"
B'Elanna blinked. "Um. Hmm. Well now that you mention it..." She frowned, trailing off.
"In fact, I found your previous topic quite intriguing. The differences between Borg ships and Voyager are extreme. Plasma conduits appear to be a supremely inefficient system but I'm interested to hear what you have to say about their care."
"Really? You are?" B'Elanna's expression was bemusement. Was this a prank? It was Seven. The woman had no concept of what a prank even was.
"Yes, as I stated previously. I am interested."
"Huh."
Seven broke B'Elanna's gaze to survey the room.
"I find your demeanour far more pleasing than that of many on this ship, with the exception of Tuvok who has excellent communication skills."
She turned back to B'Elanna.
"I find you honest, direct, and unlikely to mislead. I might say that conversation with you is quite pleasant."
B'Elanna gaped. She felt heat creep up her neck.
"W-well. Thanks I guess."
"I would like to return to the previous topic of plasma conduits," Seven stated, trying to steer the conversation back. "If you are amenable to it, of course."
B'Elanna smirked.
"Okay, you're on. But first," she slurped up the end of her drink, "we're going to do something called 'refreshing our drinks'. You better get some fruit juice you can actually stomach. Come on, back to Neelix."
"Will we not lose our hangar? I apologize, I meant table."
B'Elanna bellowed at a couple of Ensigns sneaking close to their vacated seats.
"Anyone who takes our table is on plasma conduit cleaning! Chief Engineer's orders!"
She turned back to Seven.
"Now where were we...?"

If you were in charge of overhauling Louis' aesthetic for LT3 what would you suggest?
(Clothes/shoes/hair/artwork and colours for album and adverts/ poses and expressions in photos/to smoke or not to smoke)
For Walls & Fitf we got an unsmiling Louis on the album cover looking serious. Colours were fairly muted on Walls and on Fitf tended towards goth/emo with a lot of orange and red.
In my ideal world, Louis would go back to the theatrics and be fun again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It still comes out once in a while, but he seems more stiff on stage as a solo artist than he was in 1D. In fact, he seemed to have a lot more confidence back then. Maybe it was because he didn't want to fade into the background and he had to compete with the others for attention. I don't know.
When it comes to clothing, I'd love it if he leaned more into mod style. Whenever he puts in effort, that tends to be the style he goes for. Rather than the bunched-up trackie bottoms and black tank-tops, he could stop sleeping in late and get back to this stuff:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think it suits him and it's what he likes. Louis isn't the type of guy, at least as far as anyone is aware, who is into skirts or dresses, but his clothing style (when he tries) still looks very, very camp.
I'd also suggest he get his ears pierced to add a little more flair since he doesn't really accessorize. I've always thought earrings would look nice on him.
As for hair, he's had that bowl-cut look since he was a teenager. I don't hate it. I think that also looks camp, since it isn't like those really short and boring hairstyles that most hetero men favor. But I think Louis needs someone around to style it better. Like, this is him when he doesn't style it (which makes it look... not camp):
Tumblr media
And this is him when he does style it, which does in fact look camp!:
Tumblr media
I'd also prefer he stay clean-shaven, and, if not, then groom your facial hair! Make it look neat. It's the difference between these two images:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Though he should preferably stay clean-shaven now since he's getting gray whiskers.
Next, when it comes to poses, I wish he would stop standing with his feet twenty feet apart and holding his chin up with a look of disgust. It makes him look like a sulky toddler trying to get his way. Instead he should stick to the soft poses that actually cater to women, who are his core demographic. Like these:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly, I'd love it if he did an album cover similar to the photo above where he's wearing the green sweater. It doesn't look all grungy and edgy. I don't think he should even make that type of music because it really doesn't work with his voice and who he is. I personally prefer his softer songs, like Lucky Again and Habit.
He has a high voice that is nice to listen to when he sings lightly. When I say he needs to work on his voice, I'm not saying he could ever have a powerful one. I don't think high voices are meant to be powerful. Only deep ones—both women's and men's—can be that, imo. Feel free to provide a counterexample if you have one though! He tries to scream in songs like Bigger Than Me, but it doesn't feel powerful; it feels like screeching. I'm not trying to be mean. That's just what happens when you have a high voice. Unless you're Ariana Grande and hitting unbelievable high notes, it doesn't sound pretty. Even her voice isn't something I'd describe as powerful. I'd describe it as angelic.
So, if Louis wants to be able to hit high notes, he needs to stop aiming to have a strong, powerful voice, because it will never happen. He needs to strive to have a voice like Zayn's or Ariana's, both of which hit those high notes but sound soft. High voices trying to scream just sound screechy and whiny. Deep voices like Harry's or Peter Gabriel's for example are the ones that sound powerful when belting.

Other Colours in Pink Academia
Even if your favourite colour isn’t pink, we can still be friends- pink is a state of mind. I got an ask recently about PA but make it baby blue and I was inspired to give some character inspo for other colours than pink. Also, there is no visual more fabulous than a colour-coded squad looking like studious power rangers. I tried to list as many diffrent pieces of media as possible so so of these eg Heathers might apply to more than one colour, but I just wanted to give some variety.
Red: THEEEE look has to be Heather Chandler, whose most iconic look is totally the musical with a striking red blazer, a pleated, plaid red skirt, red argyle socks, and of course, the red scrunchie. Heathers invented the Pink Academia aesthetic. Another end of the red spectrum could be Clover from Totally Spies. My first thought for a Clover outfit is that bright red shirt/blouse and pink jeans combo which I think you could academia up with a more office-ready bottom- though I will not stop anyone from recreating the spy suit either. Orange: I'm not good at orange, I'm sorry! My first thought was Lisa in the As if its your Last music video, but that's just her hair. I think a cute, simple base with an orange hairband could get the vibe across. My favourite orange-coded characters have to be the mermaids from H2o- they were my childhood. Each girl has their own colour scheme, but the mermaid tails and weird scaly bra things were an orange-gold colour, so they count! I'd recreate this with a pencil skirt and a blouse with a tie detail like a pussycat bow maybe to evoke the same details- you could also try a bustier or corset belt. Yellow: I overlooked the Clueless matching sets in my analysis, BUT NOT TODAY! It is the ideal outfit to rference for yellow, and I'll DID YOU KNOW until the end of days that it was the inspiration for Ashley B in Recess. Alternatively, the iconic yellow ball gown Belle serves is the look to end all looks and I think you could do a cute academia-style Disneybound with an off-the shoulder peasant style top and poofy yellow skirt, and some pretty rose-themed accesories. Green: Not to be on-the-nose but Elphaba from Wicked can be emulated with a striking black blouse and skirt and simple black boots. You are obligates to wear green tights or socks with this one- and Zelena from Once Upon a Time has a Wicked (pun so very intended, please appreciate me) necklace that adds so much drama to a simple all-black outfit. If you love a good supervillain, Poison Ivy serves so much potential for a floral outfit with a green base. Her most famous look is a leotard, but you can add a little bit more of a classic academia sillhouette with a white blazer to evoke a doctor's lab coat. Blue: I've already done a whole inspo set on the Abbey Mount uniform from Wild Child which can be replicated with a grey blazer and a blue plaid skirt, but for other options, there's St Trinnians with an edgier version of a similar look, or the Worst Witch, if, like me, you're trying to reconcile your happy childhood memories of Harry Potter with... uh... current climes... The Worst Witch uniforms have the added fun of personalistiion with another colour to represent your house or year group. I'm still upset at the travesty that was Fate: a Winx Saga for doing my girls dirty. for a true blue Bloom inspired look, she has a cute pleated skirt in the earlier seasons. It looks to be denim, but you could go for a plaid or houndstooth to be more rigidly Academia about it, paired with yellow and some lovehearts for contrast and a girly twist, Bloom has a tonne of good looks in the later seasons too, I'm just not as well versed because I'm old! Purple: It has to be said, Twilight Sparkle serves a Pink Academia moment with a purple pleated skirt and lace-up boots. So-Called Sci-Twi rocks a sweater vest, and the Crystal Prep uniform consists of a berry-leaning purple plaid skirt, purple socks or tights, and beryy waistcoat or blazer with each character having their own spin on the uniform. If you were a Strawberry Shortcake kid like I was (only 2003 is valid because I'm old!) then all those girls served a look. My fave is Angel Cake, and to Academia-ify her outfit, I would use a purple stripy blouse, a deeper purple blazer or jumper as a nod to the 2007 version (the only other acceptable depiction!! jk... mostly) and some kind of bow detail to go woth her hair. Also, listen, we need to bring hats back into their full power again. Neutrals: Bro, Neutrals are the base for any good dark or light academia outfits, so all of your Austen girls, all of your Secret History or Kill your Darlings kind of looks belong here. But honestly, I think mostly of Twilightcore, and if I wanted to make Bella Swan a Pink Academia Girly, I'd go for a dark green cardigan, a brown plaid skirt, and a simple white t-shirt blouse. For Bella, it would have to be flat shoes because our klutzy girl could trip on air, we do not eed to elevate her. Something more modest such as toning the outfit down with thick brown tights or a skirt with a longer hem keeps a certain degree of her style, and I think over-sizing the cardigan so you can grab the ends gives the Bella vibe.
