ISTJs + Enneagram Combination Breakdown
Disclaimer: The descriptions of each type aren’t necessarily how every ISTJ with these enneagrams are going to act. I am merely describing how common traits of each enneagram type may overlap with traits of ISTJ characters.
Most Popular Enneargram:
Type 1’s
Type 1’s have a lot of traits that tend to overlap with the cognitive functions of ISTJs; the attention to detail of Si, the perfectionism of Te, heck, even the strong morals of Fi. It comes as no surprise that ISTJ’s most popular enneagram type would be type 1.
ISTJ are extremely focused on doing what’s right, whether it’s logically or emotionally. Many of them have strongly developed lower functions that help them do what’s wrong. They may be overly perfectionistic. Because of this, they can be hard on themselves when the do something wrong. Think of Imelda from Coco.
Other Popular Enneagrams:
Type 6’s
Funnily enough, while type 6 ISTJs are not as popular as type 1 ISTJs, they seem to be the type that overlaps the most in fictional characters.
Type 6’s desire, first and foremost to be safe and secure, and a lot of 6’s may do this through routine, or finding logical solutions, much like ISTJs do. They may be critical of the world around them, or they may be afraid of losing things close to them, which is often something both type 6’s and ISTJs sometimes struggle with.
ISTJ type 6’s are often the most protective people you will meet, as well some of the nicest. Both are frequently both misunderstood, both as far as typology goes, and as far as they as people are concerned. A great example of an ISTJ type 6, would be Vaggie from Hazbin Hotel or Joel from The Last of Us.
Type 5’s
Type 5’s, like type 6’s, harbor a level of distrust towards the world, but they cope with it in different ways. Instead of using their mistrust of the world to be protective of those around them, although that can still be the case for many, they learn as much about the world around them, in order to better prepare themselves.
This is actually perfect for ISTJs, as ISTJs tend to internalize information about the outside world, hence the Si. ISTJ type 5’s are often logical, curious, wanting to know everything they can about the outside world, spreading knowledge in every way they can, and can sometimes be frustrated when things don’t match the information they know.
Consider, Alex Dunphy from Modern Family.
Other Possible Types
Type 8’s
The most basic fear of type 8’s is being harmed or controlled by others. Both ISTJs and type 8’s may be skeptical of new ideas, and tend to be very practical and logical.
An ISTJ type 8 may not like being controlled or harmed, so they do everything they can to maintain control of their own lives, and their environment, maintaining the world around them by understanding it, and coming up with logical solutions to better improve it.
A good example of an ISTJ type 8, is Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games.
Type 9’s
At first glance, one would probably thing type 9 and ISTJ as a type would not have much of an overlap. I mean, ISTJ is the most common MBTI and type 9 is the most common enneagram, so there would probably be some overlap. In reality, it actually does make a lot of sense, though.
Type 9’s at their core are peacekeepers. They seek harmony with in themselves, and within other people, and struggle with putting themselves first. They also hate conflict. People don’t tend to view ISTJs in this way, due to stereotypes, but most times ISTJs do care about other people. I’d say some of the most mistyped ISTJs, are actually type 9s.
ISTJ type 9s can sometimes be assertive, and yet warm. They are logical in away that protects other people, and they use their practicality and their knowledge of the world around them to adhere to rules. ISTJ type 9s may, however, struggle with confrontation. When things no longer feel comfortable for them, or if they no longer feel like the situation matches what they used to, they may remove themselves.
A good example of an ISTJ who is also a type 9 is Elsa from Frozen.
Type 3’s
Type 3’s are ambitious, and want nothing more than success out of their lives, and what better way to get it than by having a good understanding of their environment and how to get it?
While ISTJ type 3’s have a need to be valued, they may choose to do this by applying their knowledge and understanding of the environment around them to help them achieve success. However, like all type threes, they may become disappointed in themselves if they fail. Oftentimes, they become fixated on perfecting the world around them, and learning new information to avoid disappointment others or themselves.
An example of a type 3 ISTJ would be Amity from the Owl House.
Type 4’s
I’m honestly surprised that type 4 ISTJs aren’t more common, yet here we are.
Type 4’s are often named the “individualist” and are usually introverted. They mainly seek self-discovery, and want to learn as much about themselves as they possibly can. They want to be separated from others and to seek their own identity.
Type 4 ISTJs often do this by seeking knowledge, through their Te, and perfecting their knowledge through experience and education, through their Si. They then hold onto this identity, and uphold it with their entire being.
A good example of a type 4 ISTJ is Severus Snape from Harry Potter.
Unlikely / Rare Combos
Type 7’s
Type 7’s are often described as spontaneous and sometimes undisciplined, which may go against what we think of ISTJ traits, but it is not entirely impossible to be both an ISTJ or a type 7- just unlikely.
An ISTJ may be comfortable enough with their own environment that spontaneity may not phase them as much, and they might actually quite enjoy it. Their curious nature may also be supported heavily by their Te, and they may lean into that a lot as well.
Type 2’s
In general, type 2’s are open and extroverted, usually a high Fe user… this doesn’t necessarily mean an Fi user can’t be a two- in fact, it is one of the more popular types for ESFPs. That being said, as ISTJs have low Fi, it is more unlikely that they are a type 2. Again- it isn’t impossible.
Type 2’s at their core, are helpers, they will do anything for the people around them, even sometimes at the detriment to others. Si users know how to balance their functions easily, often reaching out to help others, while still maintaining order.
