Rereading/catching upon Black Butler after a long time. It strikes me that about half of the arcs (maybe more) feature Sebastian coming up with a plan that allows him to dress his Master up in a costume or disguise. Damn, their relationship is so deliciously twisted.

And you know, I can respect that, both as a choice of the author, and as an interesting character trait for Sebastian. Seeing that actually makes me appreciate him even more.

For me, he’s always been this enigmatic smiling hot guy—kind of the archetypal one (looking at you Diablo). Without any of his own kind to compare him against, he’s so much larger than life that it’s hard to get a sense of who he is other than “incredibly hot perfect butler who is also a demon that makes codependent mutual corruption the sexiest sin”

And I mean he is that and that’s a lot

But I can see a personality under the gags and smiles and seductions, and that’s pretty thrilling.

When I was younger and DOTC first came out I thought Bumble was one of those super fluffy cats that if you got wet they lost 80% of their body weight and I was furious about how they were shaming her for her coat. Now I'm just furious cause Bumble deserved better.

You know, now that you sorta mention it, anon, I'm starting to realize that you'll often see plus-sized characters in Warriors often portrayed as being fluffy as a stand-in for being fat/chubby

dude private catholic school was weird. i saw Godspell in 3rd grade and sometimes instead of having religion class a teacher would just put on Sister Act or the Blind Side. our parish monsignor would make catholic versions of broadway songs and create every possible opportunity for us to sing them during the homily. there was an ongoing debate about whether or not we should be allowed to say "hell" or "damn". i got detention for breaking uniform too many times for having socks that were too short. our sex ed class was one day and we watched an animated movie on VHS where the teen protagonists explicitly die because they were drinking and fooling around in a car on a cliff.

I feel like if you have a good, well-socialized idea of what "being mean" is, then you shouldn't be mean.

But.... if you were emotionally abused or traumatized as a child, or hell even just ended up with a shitty customer service job for too long or had particularly manipulative loved ones— you probably don't have a good idea of what "being mean" is.

You may think the following things are either "mean" or otherwise bad/rude, etc:

saying no to anything in any context,

setting boundaries,

expressing needs or wants,

taking up as much space or resources as you need

And my friends... those things are NOT mean in and of themselves! They are necessary, healthy, albeit sometimes uncomfortable things to do. Any good therapist will tell you this, however, and that doesn't mean it's easy to accept

So... maybe its okay to be a little mean sometimes! Maybe you SHOULD tell someone no if you feel that they arent deserving, or if they wouldn't do the same for you! Maybe you SHOULD tell people when and where they can touch you, even if it's close friends and family. They have no right to make you feel like you have no say, right? If they think it's "mean" then they have the wrong idea about personal autonomy!

Basically: If you believe making other people feel bad on purpose is mean, then you shouldnt be mean.

If you believe basic self-respect or -preservation is mean, you absolutely can and should be a little bit mean sometimes. It doesn't make you a bad person

Thinking about how all of my postcanon verses for Corinth 01 are inherently tragic (for him) because he's right back where he started, doing his duty, only now he's also a nightmare that had to be dragged back home; a nightmare that conspired against Dream, tried to have him killed; a nightmare that helped ensure his imprisonment and in doing so caused severe damage to the Dreaming and the Waking. Probably not well-liked! And he doesn't usually give a shit about whether he's liked or not as long as he's feared, but god, after so long in the Waking, where he found people (serial killers) just like him, people who listened to and followed him, people who craved his attention and approval... Oof.

And the fact that like. For my Corinth, being ignored or dismissed is the worst experience for him. That one quote from Silver in Bl.ack Sa.ils: You will account for me. He demands recognition, respect; he wants power but more than that he wants what power gives him. He doesn't want Dream's affection, or anyone's, but he wants to be seen: he can't stand being ignored, can't stand the idea that anyone can overlook his existence or think him unremarkable and undeserving of their attention.

It's arrogance, plain and simple--this is a serial killer who eats people's eyes and has no care for the consequences of his actions beyond what it gets him--but to him, it isn't. To him, he's being treated unjustly; to him, the conditions of his continued existence aren't fair, and he misses the freedom of the Waking and the sensory pleasures and distractions that opened so easily to him there.

It's also very easy for him to think that he might be able to escape again unnoticed--or at the very least, that trying to do so will force Dream to listen to him.

I'm sure I've said this before but imagine if BlackStar was written to be really incompetent (At least I don't think he was originally written like that. My memory is fuzzy with him) at doing his leader duties. Like imagine they played off of the idea that he's a follower, not a leader. He's weak-willed and easily swayed and depended only on RussetFur, his deputy, to help him make decisions. To an extremely unhealthy amount too. But also I don't want RussetFur to be written to be the quote on quote "only brain cell" of the two. No no, that's boring as shit and fucking stupid.

Back on my Danny & Ras frienemies/rivals/maybe-lovers-nobody-can-tell-their-signals-are-very-mixed train.

See, Danny has gone through time a lot. Often. It comes with being Clockwork’s charge-son-thing and honestly he finds it fun. And several times he’s used this time travelling to get some training in. Enter Ras, stage left, also a teen at the time and also learning swordsmanship from the same person.

And they… utterly despise each other. They would kill the other for an apple slice, if the other one would die! But also, only they can kill the other, as it is obviously their right!

And well, they keep running into each other. It has been a hundred years, surely the other would die by now? But of course their rival would live through utter spite. Probably to spite them specifically.

The amount of times they have ended up sparring- trying to kill each other or not- the moment they see the other is actually ridiculous. But time is also passing. And… Danny understands, not having another to talk about things people are forgetting, or have already forgotten.

How they ended up actually talking without a murder attempt was a long story that included a demon, a dragon, a pair of fae, some bandits, and a lot of alcohol, but it happened. And then it happens again. And again, and now it’s just kind of normal to share a drink after their spars, talking about things that no longer exist, and things they miss.

Sure Danny can go back in time again, but he knows better than to do it willy nilly. He’s matured, he’s been an adult for a hundred years now, he knows there’s consequences for messing with time, even with Clockwork’s blessings.

The first time they got married was technically for an undercover assassination. Well, Ras was there to assassinate someone, Danny was there to grab an artifact that should Not be in the realm of the living. And they got divorced after, it was fine.

They just, also got married again when they met a few years later, for another job. And… okay, so maybe they have gotten married over a dozen times now and only divorced like half of those times. Half of those were for the bit or while drunk!

And even if technically they’re married or shared a bed, it’s not like they're exclusive! As Ras’ daughters’ existences attest to (adopted in one case or not). They don’t exactly have a label for their relationship, despite others asking for one or trying to put a name to it themselves.

Now Danny knows Ras isn’t exactly a good dude, or at least on the side of ‘good’ as he’s a literal assassin. But he also knows that good? Bad? Rather relative. He had gotten labeled as a villain when he was just trying to help all that time ago after all, and really who was he to tell someone else how to live their life?

Which brings him to now, where he’s run into his old frienemy-rival and his youngest daughter. Who has a braindead teenager and a small toddler. Which is fine, really- but also, Talia dear, why are you using a brain dead teenager to guard your three year old son?

Okay, Talia dear, Ras (Derogatory), why are you using your brain dead son and grandson to guard your younger son and grandson? Do you not have the Pits, which you were soo proud about Ras? Yes, he will spar with you, but for Realms’ sake, heal, what’s his name? Ah yes, go heal Jason and he’ll actually stick around for a few years, deal? Good.
