so! you want to rip a fic from fanfiction dot net?
I’m sure at this point we’ve all seen the posts about FFN’s inevitable demise. Not to downplay how much that would suck, for all we riff on FFN--but people have been saying that for literal years at this point, and while I do not doubt that FFN is dying, it’s probably not going to up and vanish on us in the next week. It’s got some good time of chugging and wheezing along left yet.
But among the panic there are people asking sincere questions about what can be done to save fics from FFN in the case of the site going down and taking literal decades of fandom history with it, and I’m seeing a surprising amount of people saying that the only way to do it is to either screenshot the fics or type them out yourself because copy/paste does not work on FFN. And that is just blatantly not true. There are many ways in which you can save fics from FFN. Here are just a few:
You can copy/paste directly from the mobile site. This is probably one of the easiest methods for anyone to do. Just click on the URL of the chapter you’re reading, and change the www. to m. Hit enter and the page will reload in mobile mode. You can now copy/paste the chapter right into a word document. You will have to go chapter by chapter.
CTRL+S. Go to the fic you want to save, and hit ctrl+s. Save the damn webpage. This will keep it in the exact format of the webpage, which you could see as a pro or a con, but it will also keep the ads, which does suck. You’ll also have to go chapter by chapter with this method but it does go a lot faster than manually copy/pasting the text.
HTML to PDF. This method I’m admittedly a little less sure about, since when I used it it was like, 2013 and I was in highschool so I’m not sure how viable it still is, but--just a quick google search should find you a website that will let you save a webpage as a PDF file. I have folders and folders of fics I saved back in highschool using this method. It will again have to go chapter by chapter and just like saving the webpage will keep the format of the site intact--down to keeping the ads.
Use a fanfiction downloader. Two I’ve been using for years are FF2eBook and FicHub. You put in the link of the fic you want to download and it converts the entire thing into a file for you. Yes, the entire thing--you don’t need to manually go through chapter by chapter. By default, both sites download in epub format, though FicHub does have a few other options. I’ve never really experimented with them though because I’m personally fine with epub, and there are a million epub to pdf (or other file type) converters out there.
And there you go: a handful of ways for you to save your favourite fics before FFN goes under. Again, I don’t think it’s something to be too worried about, but the best time to do your part for fandom preservation was yesterday. The second best time is to get started right now. There is no reason to wait for FFN to be on its death bed to start saving fics. I’ve been doing this for years just so I have fics to read offline.
I’m a little too young to have been around for livejournal, but I was one of those weirdos that posted their first fics on quizilla. I remember when quizilla just...changed. And so much was lost. Looking back, almost none of what was posted on quizilla was actually good, but it was still something that someone put time and effort and passion into creating, and it was important.
There is almost no way that when FFN inevitably goes down that its entire archive will be saved. But we can do our best to save as much as we can. Stop panicking and start saving.

Alright so here's the thing. I don't own a lot in the way of super valuable or rare merchandise, but what I do have is a very particular doujinshi crossover of a very particular pair of shows.
Tumblr media
Problem 1: I have *never* seen this doujin before or since, I could not even tell you who created it.
Problem 2: *Because* of its rarity, I'm constantly torn between preserving it as-is, or dissecting it and scanning it for the greater YST and PGSM communities to enjoy a piece of shared history.
Help me out folks.

Call it being up late, but I had the realization that if Tumblr ever goes down (or goes through another purge like in 2018) then we'll potentially lose the YGO shiplists, which are all in the form of Tumblr blogs.
The end result is that I now have copies of all shiplists from DM through ARC V backed up as text documents. VRAINS, Sevens, and Go Rush will follow later hopefully.

Two Dudes Who Were in Love
From an otherwise not-favorable review of the S8 finale:
"What did work was the episode’s conclusion, which saw House and Wilson riding off together on their motorcycles. House’s relationship with Wilson was what made him likable—his vulnerability was revealed through their friendship. The last scene confirmed something that anyone who watched the show carefully would have picked up: On the surface House was about a crabby, genius, sleuth doctor but at its core the show was about two dudes who were in love."

I’m begging the Glitch Techs fandom to improve its wiki.
Save all those animatics and crew room photographs and upload them there! Take all the official renders and model sheets already posted to the wiki (potentially by an actual crew member??) and move them to their appropriate galleries! Write transcripts, expand pages with information! Web Archive and screenshot tweets and Discord messages’
If Twitter disappears and the show never continues, a resource for all that information for current and future fans to look back at is invaluable.

You know, I think Fandom in general needs to have a discussion about archival and preservation of fandom culture, art, and literature and the ethics of doing so.
We currently only have Ao3 as an all around general Archive, but with Fanfiction.Net's decline (and making it apparent that it will be closed or completely inaccessible in the future) it's been brought to my attention that works on FFN that haven't already been posted to Ao3 (or anywhere else) may be lost forever.
Tons of fanfics written by the older generations of fandom just, simply erased from existence. That just... doesn't sound right to me.
But I may be of a different mind set than most people because I've been a content creator who, by chance, happened to purge their blogs in the past. This included losing some artwork that I posted but never saved.
However, because people have reposted some of my art (without permission, I might add) I was able to find that art and save it.
While I'm still of the opinion that you very well should NOT repost artwork without permission (seriously don't do it), because I was in a position where my art was archived on the internet in a way that allowed me, the creator, to find it again when the original medium it was posted on was deleted, I can understand that side to it. It was archived, even through more malicious means, and thus preserved.
With this in mind and the potential fall of FFN on the horizon, I think that (regardless if FFN is going to close anytime soon or if this is just the internet panicking like usual) fandom needs to have a discussion about archival and preservation of fanfiction and fan content in general and come to the agreement of proper etiquette of archival projects as such. Because one day, there might be a tragic end to Ao3. Then what? Is all if that content just, gone? Eaten by the void? Several years of history down the drain and erased?
I feel like this is a discussion worth having.

So apparently KOSA (2024 edition) is getting either thrown out until next year or put into effect in six days. That was a guesstimate based on a different person saying that's when Congress is back in session and may be false.
Update that's going in the main post at the top: it has enough support to pass Congress.
It failed the last two times because people were voting against it.
This time, KOSA has traction among the pro-LGBTQ parties. Because nobody is fucking calling their bullshit and screaming from the rooftops that calling it the "Kids Online Safety Act" is misleading.
What will it passing do?
Nothing much, only prevent any education on LGBTQIA+ (it's that stupid fucking argument about us grooming kids again), shut down nearly every fandom space on the internet, and make it required for most big tech companies to have your ID.
Want to have resources for kids to discover their identity readily available? Yes? Then fucking speak up against this stupid fucking bill.
Fandom spaces like Tumblr, Twitter (? I thought the MAGA assholes liked Musk?), Tiktok, Archive Of Our Own, and any other website that hosts fanfic or fanart? Either shut down permanently, forced to uproot to a different country and down for a while (best case scenario, and they likely won't be able to send any data, and therefore fanfics, to the US), or gutted so that you only get to put G rated cishet ships on there, if any shipping at all. How to avoid that? I've already said it: Call your fucking representatives.
Want to avoid the fucking dystopic task of being legally obligated to give big tech your government issue ID? Again, cause an uproar. Call your goddamned representatives.
If they can pass this, the ripple effects could be catastrophic.
So, for fuck's sake, any Americans that can impact this stupid fucking bill and see this? Do everything in your power to shut it down because you have until February twenty sixth (26th) to send this bill back to where it belongs.
And if you can't do that? Reblog, copy my tags, and boost the signal.
Sorry not sorry for ranting, making you scroll through that, and swearing a probably excessive amount, but KOSA is a bill with a GLOBAL IMPACT being passed by ONE COUNTRY because some old people are scared of two guys with who were told they were girls kissing within five hundred miles of a child. Fuck this shit, I shouldn't have to worry about bad bills in America but I fucking do because I use the internet and would like to avoid mass censorship. Fuck this, fuck conservatives, and fuck the fact that some boomers make your country's policies.
Now, if you won't mind me, I'm going to be up until three in the morning downloading fanfiction or copying and pasting them into a a text file if I can't so I can read them by the end of the week.

I haven't had a chance to properly start reading this yet, but I just discovered the Quantum Leap Virtual Seasons fanfiction project! Very excited, especially because it looks like a lot of it has already been put into the Archive's WayBack Machine for preservation!

Fandom preservation is big important deal. And a lot has been said about the preservation of fanfiction. There are people running archives dedicated to finding and hosting lost or deleted fics. There are ficbinder out there preserving their favourite fics in hardcopy.
But what about fanart? Digital art takes more storage then text. Is anyone out there creating hardcopy of their favourite fanart or fancomics? Fanart gets posted to so many different places but where is safely archived at? How much will we lose if DeviantArt shuts down?
And don't get me started on fanvids. Most of those are on YouTube which is a nightmare for preservation. There is pretty much no accessible way to create hardcopy of fanvids. No one is transferring their fanvids onto archival film or tape.
I worry about the historical media dead zone we are creating. I worry about how much is lost each year and how little might remain in just a decade or two

Smpronpa being brought back and creators just saying “yeah lol we didn’t care it was just that guy” is so vindicating it feels like the world is healing!! Like. If you weren’t even in the smplive fandom but into mcyt at the time you probably still heard about the discourse surrounding it but it’s BACK!!! And we all love it!!!! Like we always did!!!! It was just that one guy who fucked it up!!! And caused a whole witch hunt about it!!! It may seem silly to care about this but holy shit being there in the trenches when everything happened was an experience to say the least.

The Internet Archive is under attack by corporations seeking to wrest more and more of our fair use rights, our public spaces and our communities from the public good. The Archive was recently forced into a settlement for scanning and digitizing legally purchased books. They are now facing a $325 million lawsuit for accepting donations of old 78 RPM historical music records that were digitized by volunteers. The goal is not only to stop the distribution of these works, but to create new legal precedents that make it illegal to preserve or archive for any reason. This will have a significant impact on our culture, our communities, and our future
Here is how you can help them
1. Use The Internet Archive Site
2. Save websites via "Save Page Now" browser tool
3. Become a patron to get a free "library card"
4. Curate & Upload to the Archive
5. Tell People That the Internet Archive Exists
6. Browse The Many, Many Collections
7. Take care of yourself and the people you care about
(Link will take you to a blog article that goes into these suggestions in detail)

remus' first heartbreak isn't when he's fifteen, lying in a cot in the hopsital wing while james and peter stand by the side, ears ringing while he watches lazily-bleeding scars stretch over his knuckles when he curls his fingers into a fist.
it's not when he's eighteen, knee-deep in loveless, worn-down circles of weary werewolves looking for allies, a bone-deep exhaustion sieving every bit of energy he has spare into a trickle that's barely enough to keep him afloat amid the war when rage cannot.
it's not even when he's twenty-one, reeling from the aftershock of betrayal that makes it feel like he's being ripped open from esophagus to abdomen while his friend's remains are scraped off the street.
he's eleven, waking up on the first day of his second month at hogwarts. remus watches a large, shiny owl deliver james a collection of luxurious chocolates for breakfast. watches sirius stuff a howler in a teapot before it can start on its tirade, james joining in on the attempts to silence it. watches an explosion of glitter coat peter's face when he opens a letter from home, laughing about a vindictive cousin.
remus waits, and waits and waits. never grows impatient, simply waits. and when the school year ends, keeps waiting, hands folded in his lap and chin held up straight.
remus steps into his father's office on the third day of the summer holiday's and finds a stack of mail sitting on his desk. remus leaves silently a moment later.
unbroken wax seals, remus remembers, watching his skin crackle as crimson blood seeps from his white knuckles, the colour uncanny. james says something, but he doesn't hear it. the hospital wing hums and remus exhales, slow and patient.
to be loved is to be changed, blemishes simply a bruise in the shape of love. remus' skin is riddled with scars, his mothers love seeping into him as each wipe of a dittany-soaked cloth seals his wretched wounds. james is written into the curve of his lips, peter finding space in-between the freckles on his cheeks, and sirius curled up in the sliver of space made available between his ribs and ever-beating, crackling heart.
every letter remus sends to his father in his first year is pristine and unmarred. remus never sends him one again.

OK, Hilson Tumblrinos
If you like House & Wilson, YELLING IN ALL CAPS and being silly, y'all should go enjoy the HouseWilsonLOL community on Livejournal.
WARNING: We made a ton of fun of the term "Hilson" because those were wild and crazy days on the internet when tagging was an intermittent thing.
Some of the posts were "friends-locked" (another term from the old days) so here are a couple for you to see, SPOILERS:

PS. The two actual Real Person ship names for Hugh and RSL were 1) HL/RSL and 2) Hughbert
