‘Some psychologists believe our values tend to cluster around certain poles, described as “intrinsic” and “extrinsic”. People with a strong set of intrinsic values are inclined towards empathy, intimacy and self-acceptance. They tend to be open to challenge and change, interested in universal rights and equality, and protective of other people and the living world.
People at the extrinsic end of the spectrum are more attracted to prestige, status, image, fame, power and wealth. They are strongly motivated by the prospect of individual reward and praise. They are more likely to objectify and exploit other people, to behave rudely and aggressively and to dismiss social and environmental impacts. They have little interest in cooperation or community. People with a strong set of extrinsic values are more likely to suffer from frustration, dissatisfaction, stress, anxiety, anger and compulsive behaviour.
Trump exemplifies extrinsic values. From the tower bearing his name in gold letters to his gross overstatements of his wealth; from his endless ranting about “winners” and “losers” to his reported habit of cheating at golf; from his extreme objectification of women, including his own daughter, to his obsession with the size of his hands; from his rejection of public service, human rights and environmental protection to his extreme dissatisfaction and fury, undiminished even when he was president of the United States, Trump, perhaps more than any other public figure in recent history, is a walking, talking monument to extrinsic values.’

also a special shoutout for real like wendy epic ableism moments when she stops talking directly to winston and expresses this is b/c he communicates too incorrectly (here too literally or whatever, once again whether he misinterpreted her or she misinterpreted him, it's put on him) and thus he doesn't deserve that
#winston billions#and i mean handshake with how winston's basically not considered allowed to talk at all by anyone out here#but like. alright we're not showing that winston is in the room mostly for a joke but even randos are like ''hmm. bit impolite'' lol#but once we do see him b/c he's speaking....like actually it Is heinously rude / diminishing / infantilizing to be spoken to indirectly#and The Behavior Is Inherently Ableist Here like ofc it's probably rude no matter what outside some kind of rly specific contexts lol but#that here she Is just implying he doesn't get to be spoken to b/c of some shortcoming / assumed lack of capacity#whatever she Does mean by ''see the matrix'' which is nothing but convenient vagueness abt Ability anyways#he's only here b/c she thinks he's annoying or w/e or otherwise extrinsically showing lack of value (can't be ableism there....)#and like winston and any other character is like. it's not textual sure but it doesn't need to be Textually Labeled#and sometimes can't be when ppl absolutely write based of ppl they know / encounter but don't know are autistic or etc#and that's how it works irl too. someone being Officially(tm) Autistic or smthing shouldn't be some necessary disclosure#b/c it's about The Underlying Principles At Play vs making some approved ''exceptions.'' if he's supposedly allistic it's still sm shit.#like how trans ppl & transphobia could exist prior to those terms even existing to be used. ppl are affected by them w/o being Out....#& btw like ppl still saying some shit like ''some autistic ppl will just be Bad At / Have No Social Skills & you have to be chill abt it''#like what does [social skills] mean here. what's the underlying element of socializing that they may do differently but you say is a Worse#or Absent version of the ''normal'' way of going about things. even if you actually get specific enough abt what a ''skill'' is; which is#gonna be a non universal non rule probably inaccurate idea of a Normal(tm) pattern of behavior/approach; sure maybe some ppl will struggle#to do that or largely/entirely not be able to do it / be unwilling to do it; gasp; what's its goal/effect & do they pursue/achieve that#another way. e.g how much AAC could be considered inherently ''bad'' re socializing or a lack of w/e ''skills'' or etc.#then like ok so once again a begrudging exception for autistic ppl is made. what's ''being okay with'' that even look like then? is anyone#gonna be using their ''good social skills'' to more successfully interact w/them? is Not socially excluding / ostracizing / punishing an#autistic person an Exception / something Extra you heroically do? e.g. & so what if some theoretical person isn't socially engaging w/other#ppl in any way. what do & don't they ''deserve'' differently from others b/c of that.#& anyways meanwhile they're certainly talking abt winston's Capabilities. but mostly talking around it b/c the point is He Gets Results &#will keep getting those results b/c why wouldn't he. but they can just cite anything to argue why oh but he doesn't Really have the value#cue vague shit like matrix refs b/c if he was Reeally talented we'd think he acts right. b/c Any bs can be said b/c winston doesn't have#the insulation or backup or ability to independently wield/gain social status his way through this shit. is only allowed to talk to#coworkers abt it by making it abt taylor actually (which is also true). still only makes it b/c rian is correctly remaining in the#acceptable range of being offbeat. so she already has more power than him & can choose to keep him around as that fun punching bag ig yay#then nobody cares. also he can't say he controls an instrument but Others refer to ''genius'' but negatively. wendy rhoades Would do ABA fr

hi there! Since you're currently Homestuck I'm writing in to ask you a favor: could you explain the truth/relevance/essentiality model of native integrity, for someone who has some experience with metafiction but hasn't read the Epilogues? I never got to that part of Homestuck and my attempts to Google explanations has left things very unclear in my head - in particular where each category ends and the other two begin.
okay so! caveat that a lot of this is going off memory and also 4 years of my own interpretation of the terms that may or may not correlate to actual reality, but truth/relevance/essentiality can be explained as follows:
as per the epilogues these things constitute the three pillars of canon - for a piece of fiction to attain canonicity it must be true relevant and essential to that which came before. in some ways this is as simple as if something like a sequel/spinoff passes the "he would not fucking say that" test and sometimes it's less simple.
for ease of understanding, each pillar can be understood as thus:
for something to be true, it must by definition not contradict either the literal or metaphorical truth of the canonical text. what comes after must be congruent with what came before. the easiest way to measure a story's truth value is to see if what is being said is verified as existing in some form within canon - if a character expresses interest in thing A, but this piece of fiction depicts them as both liking B and disliking A without even acknowledging their canonical enjoyment of A, then it loses its truth value.
for something to be relevant, it must have some matter of value or importance within the text itself. an example of something that is true but not relevant would be a side story that doesn't contradict the main canon but also doesn't add or change the core story in any way. inoffensive fluff of no consequence in other words.
for something to be essential, it must be in alignment with the themes and driving theses of the text. to make something essential, it must speak to the "why" of the source text in such a way that it either changes/becomes part of the central message. another understanding of essentiality is through audience impact - is this feature valued enough to stick in a reader's consciousness as a key component when recounting the story's details? in a lot of ways essentiality/relevance do share overlap, but my understanding is relevance = within the text and essentiality = outside of the text.
when thinking about these pillars, the important part is that these terms are also a loose metaphor for adherence to power structures/conformity to hierarchical norms. in homestuck, "canon" is a form of violence inflicted on its characters (the alpha timeline as a concept is the most accessible form of this) and so to adhere to canon is to perform existence in a way that the system views with approval. the pillars of canon are extrinsic validation that represent a total narrativising of reality, and thus the conflicts and hardships of canon continue to perpetuate (in homestuck epilogues terms, this comes in the form of sacrificing "happily ever after" for an intriguing and exciting sequel despite the suffering it will inflict on the characters).
what's interesting about this model is that truth/relevance/essentiality can also be self-generated and self-sustaining. a totally canon-divergent fanfiction will completely undermine the rules of its source to the point where if it were to be moored to canon it would damage the integrity of both texts, but it nonetheless continues to have its own internal consistency/structures. a queer AU means nothing to the source text, but it has meaning to itself and to the audience it exists for (audience response isn't very hashed out in the epilogues model, but i think it's important to consider for a more comprehensive picture - @hms-no-fun's godfeels touches a lot on this angle) and thus an alternative mode of being is formed in response.
the problem with a text that fails to adhere to these pillars is that, while it is afforded a greater structural freedom, it also fails to matter. a fanfiction that is canon-compliant has a greater value in the discourse surrounding its source text than a coffee shop au that only has character names and appearances as a shared commonality - even if this coffee shop au is a groundbreaking and moving piece of narrative, because it lacks any meaningful ties to canon it cannot be used to shape canon.
to give a clear example, a lot of this for me is most easily explored in the concept of june egbert who existed most prominently as a nebulous promise destined for the future of homestuck, but absent in its present. the question driving a lot of the fans with a vested interest in june during the 2019/2020 era was "june egbert is real, but how can june egbert be real? and what does june egbert being real mean?"
you can see this a lot with the two schools of fanworks depicting june egbert. on one hand you have what is loosely dubbed "hairclips june" - a version of june egbert who exists as the platonic ideal of transfeminine fantasy, who inhabits contemporary college aus and perfect femininity and coming out stories filled to the brim with queer coming of age tropes and feelgood trans girl archetypes. she is true and essential and relevant to the transgender experience (and indeed hairclips june *has* helped in cracking people's eggs and thus her validity and importance cannot be denied) but not the homestuck experience. in homestuck, june egbert will never come into being as an early 20's john egbert who realizes her depression is actually unaddressed dysphoria and who spends a great deal of time taking estrogen and wearing skirts and kissing her friends, but that doesn't mean there isn't a great deal of value in these texts existing regardless of their proximity to canon.
on the flipside you have "extant june" (a term i am inventing right now to categorize this character type in absence of official terminology), a version of june egbert focused much more on meaningfully addressing "how can june egbert come to be in a convincing way?", or "what canon and canon-adjacent avenues could june egbert take to come into being?". these june works are more dominated by the messy and heavy and dramatic rules that govern homestuck, and figuring out how to fit june egbert into that pattern. one such instance of this is godfeels, whose june comes about from a mind-meld with a sort of brain ghost vriska after a severe depressive episode and creates the composite "june eg8ert", a manifestation of vriska's influence on john during act 5 brought to its logical extreme. another instance is my own story, omelette route, which has june egbert come into being following her resurrection at the end of the epilogues and the canonical truth that "john egbert is dead"; freed from the narrative obligation of being john egbert, she is able to start examining the true shape of her feelings - this of course is an extension of the questions of selfhood posed over and over again by postcanon homestuck. you can even turn to homestuck^2 itself for what will almost certainly be "canon" june's entrance, through a 40 year old john egbert who, after sleepwalking his way into a miserable life and cruel world, has decided to once again give autonomy a chance.
extant june's stories are, for a better term, characterised in bleak and heavy and thematically dense brushstrokes, because homestuck itself is all of these things and more. to make a plausible june egbert that adheres to the rules of homestuck is to make june egbert compatible with the suffering of homestuck. june will never get a neat and happy coming out, but she might experience post-resurrection ego dissolution, or she might experience a personality-shifting psychic fusion, as these are all extreme character-defining moments common to homestuck's narrative language. yet there remains a controversy in these junes compared to hairclips june - these stories are often too complicated, too messy, too traumatic for an easy and palatable consumption. and yet they feel infinitely more tangible than a story about 21 year old college senior john egbert who is forcefemmed by his transfem roommate rose lalonde and has several feelings awoken as a result.
one version of june strives for truth and relevance and essentiality, and one does not. both junes contain an immense value for their respective audiences. in this way, you don't need the pillars of canon to have a conversation with a story's audience, but you do need them to have a conversation with the story itself. a story can only speak to its own pillars. if you discard those pillars either willingly or unwillingly, then you are distancing yourself from the possibility of dialogue. this is not to say that extant june is more "real" than hairclips june (they are both fanworks after all, and thus unable to ever attain absolute "truth" on their own due to not being canonically-authored texts), but that extant junes are more readily in direct dialogue and conversation with homestuck and thus have a greater potential for influence in this specific way. hairclips june through her essentiality can change your relationship to yourself, while extant june through her essentiality and relevance can change your relationship to homestuck.
i hope this helps in illuminating these concepts in a way that makes more tangible sense!

Some psychologists believe our values tend to cluster around certain poles, described as 'intrinsic' and extrinsic'.
People with a strong set of intrinsic values are inclined towards empathy, intimacy, and self-acceptance, whereas those with extrinsic values are more attracted to prestige, status, image fame, power and wealth.
Conservatives are attracted to extrinsic values like over-priced spray-painted shitty sneakers.
MAGA is the veneer of opulence built on fraud, debts, corruption, and betrayal sold by a business failure and loveless abuser.

" Even if the world will or might hate you, I will not as you are my love, so please let me carry your burdens as well as you carry mine we are equal in this marriage "
But with Rook, Jack, Ruggie, Riddle and Azul
Tumblr media
Proposal (2) | Crewel Daughter Reader x Yandere Twisted Wonderland
Tumblr media
Rook Hunt
Probably a lawsuit
Or maybe a family reunion
Whatever it is he’s been ostracized and called weird
Something he often gets in passing but this time it just hurts
For someone so eccentric he’s not exactly open with everyone
Let alone computing his frustration in the normal way
So he’s uncharacteristically is angry
Firing intensely at multiple targets
He hardly notices your there until he sees a black and white feathered arrow break through his
“Mon amour? Désolé, I didn’t notice you were there.”
“You? The famous hunter: Rook Hunt, unable to notice me?”
“Well mon amour, you are ethereal.”
He gives his smile but your unconvinced
Firmly removing the bow and arrow from his hand
You push past his hanging locks to hold his face to look at you
Pulling him in to touch your forehead with his while you maintain eye-contact
You recite your vow to him rubbing your manicured thumbs over his cheeks
When you finished he dove into kiss you with you reciprocating
Pulling you against his muscular chest
Letting him run his hands all over your body as you both made out
Eventually, you feel the weight being lifted from you pocket
“Awww you were going to propose?”
“So were you.”
You both pull away to reveal the ring you each brought for one another
Crewel’s not as averse to this then he originally thought
All he’s ever uttered about you has been praise
And he’s well aware of the hunter’s habit of avenging your character at any opportunity
Violent or otherwise
“The bloodhound is a better choice, though I’m curious how well he’ll fare in the future.”
Tumblr media
Jack Howl
He probably didn’t get the position he wanted most on a team
He’s usually so sure of himself
Only to find he’s been benched
But its not because of his skill
Its the coach
Took one look at you, hearts in his eyes, and a look of disdain for Jack
From then on he’s been trying to sooth his rising anger
He didn’t want to resort to violence, you deserved better
Andit’dbeobviousanyway
“(Y/n) can we talk…?”
He’s not one to sit on something when his mate is willing to listen
“I just hate how he insists upon something so baseless.”
“Oh Jack…”
You say what you say before giving him a kiss on the corner of his lips
Getting on your knee, he’s transcended the pettiness of the coach
It also helps that the coach went missing
Crewel thinks it's okay but he still wishes he ‘wasn’t such a brute’
“It must be the muscles…darling please consider there’s more to look for than extrinsic value. I doubt there’s much really happening upstairs.”
Tumblr media
Ruggie Bucci
Probably a failed promotion
Maybe for him taking left over food or they found out he has ‘laugh with me’
He just wants to be able to provide
And not have to rely on your finances
He just wants to be there for you
“I just want see where I can support you, you know?”
“Well there is something you can do for me…”
Getting on your knee and proposing to him has him erupting in a blush
He’s between being angry he didn’t do it first and just beside himself with pride
He’s landed the love of his life and all without using his unique power
He might just burn down an office building for celebration
Crewel isn’t happy but when is he ever
He thinks Ruggie is too much of henchman to be married to you
“You had to pick the smallest one in the litter? Does he know how to be more than a lackey?”
Tumblr media
Riddle Rosehearts
He’s rejected on a major scale
Similar to his overblot incident
He just goes too far in his willingness for rules
Maybe not as far but to others it feels like it
And right now it feels like everyone’s turned their backs on him
He’s riding in the early morning so he can clear his mind hiseyes before the day starts
You come to the rescue riding your own midnight stallion as you ride up beside him
“Well Roses, how are you feeling?”
He doesn’t fully release his inner thoughts only tightening his hold on the reigns
“You don’t have to tell me anything but I need you to listen.”
Having your horse bow while you present the crimson ring
He blushes and the nearby forestry alights with flames
Confident he doesn’t step down from his decision
“Off with your heads! For the crime of hostile peer pressure!”
There’s got to be a rule for that ifnothe’llmakeone
Crewel thinks he’s too much of a stick in the mud
“Isn’t he far too straight-edged? Don’t you think this will hinder your lifestyle, darling? Is he really worth it?”
Tumblr media
Azul Ashengrotto
One of his budding locations has some major problems on the opening month
That further is worsened by the competitive restaurant across the street
Who somehow were able to orchestrate a threat made of what looked like blood on their fish tank
But it called Azul out specifically
And while it was cleaned and the rest of the service went smoothly it really shook his self esteem
Leaving you to pick him up
He treats his room like his pot
Refusing to leave but willing to let you poke your face into
“I have to wonder, (Y/n), am I in over my head? Am I really not cut-out for this? Do I even deserve this!? Do I even deserve you?!”
You cup his head and kiss his beauty mark and then his nose
“Well of course you do, I accepted didn’t I?”
He chuckles and you gleam
“Its also why I asked to put that ring on your finger.”
He looks up at you in confusion
“Huh? Ring?”
“Yes. Ring.”
You hold up his hand with a pearl diamond crusted ring
“Wh-wha-huh–I–ah-ohmygosh!”
“Just say yes darling!”
“Yes yes!”
With a pep in his step he happily let Floyd & Jade pick the events for the bachelor party in exchange for a small favor
The competitor wasn’t a problem after that
Crewel wants to despise him but he respects the hustle
“Anyone who can gain control of an entire school like he has…I guess is worthy enough. But then again a school run by that crow must be breadcrumbs for that sleaze.”

The one thing I don't get about Hogwarts is the house point system. Like, I get what it's supposed to do on paper, but what exactly do the kids get out of it? A cup at the end of the year? And they don't even get the cup, the head of house does. Are kids really competing for which teacher gets to have a cup in their office for a year?
There's lots of that in school and work places in general.
Schools (especially elementary) often have gold star systems. You don't actually get anything if you get a gold star, you just get a gold star, but damn if some people don't love racking up stars.
At work and later schooling there will be awards for good grades and other things that don't actually affect your future in any real way but you can still get them.
People get a lot out of intrinsic motivation/rewards that don't necessarily mean anything or have any influence (e.g. get you money/opportunities for the future) but let you know 'hey you did a good thing and are valued and recognized'. This actually motivates people a fuck ton and sometimes more than extrinsic rewards.
The house points are right in that alley of gamification of good behavior for the group of students as a whole.
You bet your ass there are students there obsessed with earning house points and really deeply care about getting the house cup. (See actually Hermione and even Harry in terms of the house cup and being very upset if Slytherin is close to winning.)
The hilarious bit is that Dumbledore sabotages this system multiple times at the end of the year which sort of undermines the entire point and teaches Slytherins never to work hard because Dumbledore will just yank it away.

An instrumental goal is a goal that you have not because you want it for its own sake, but because it helps you achieve some other goal. For instance, making money is often an instrumental goal: people (often) don't just inherently want a big stack of cash, they want money so that they can use it to achieve various other things in their life that they value.
A convergent instrumental goal is an instrumental goal which is likely to be useful no matter what your ultimate goals are. Making money is a good example of this as well. Almost no matter what you want, having more money is going to be a useful tool to help you get it. Yes, money can't buy happiness, but it can afford stability and comfort, avert risk, and open up opportunities. These things are likely to help you regardless of what you want in life. So these kinds of instrumental goals are called convergent, because many different people will converge on them even if those people ultimately want different things.
This is why it seems like everybody in life is always trying to make money. Other examples of convergent instrumental goals: self-preservation, power, knowledge.
Contrary to all this are terminal goals. These are things that you want inherently, just because you want them—there is no extrinsic motivation necessary. For many of us, happiness is a terminal goal. Being a good person might be another terminal goal.
Right. So there's a school of thought which many people seem to implicitly adhere to, but which I don't think I've ever heard explicitly advocated. It says "in order for a person to be considered rational, it must be the case that all their terminal goals are also convergent instrumental goals. To want something intrinsically which is not a convergent instrumental goals is per se irrational".
The closest I've seen anyone come to explicitly saying this is @raginrayguns, although I think he believes something slightly different. One way or another, I think a lot of people—maybe most people—sort of implicitly endorse this view in a spotty and inconsistent way, although they may not do so explicitly.
I, for one, reject this view. But that's just me.

🍂: Interview with a Boundless Candidate || dolls, boundless, creativity, transformations, saints, cute?, sorry to the confused
"Please state your name for the record."
"..."
"Nothing?"
"names are...well, they can't be self-assigned."
"Good catch. Sorry about the trick question, but you understand why we have to make you jump through all these hoops."
"it's fine."
"How long have you lived as a doll?"
"my whole life. or, well, maybe that's just how i've been treated."
"How you've been treated?"
"sorry, how this one has been treated."
"So the whole world treats you like a doll?"
"more or less, this one supposes."
"But how long has it been since you decided to just accept it? To stop fighting back and just give up your personhood?"
"it did not make the decision; this is...it's just the way it is. the way it's always been."
"Mm, fair. Dolls don't choose."
"dolls don't choose."
"And you believe that you'll be happier as a doll?"
"i...it has never really...understood the concept of happiness."
"You're unhappy being treated this way?"
"this one has never seen happiness as attainable."
"But you need this to feel comfortable?"
"no, not really."
"Then what exactly do you expect to get out of this?"
"congruence. alignment of expectations and reality."
"My point is, what do YOU want out of this? You, not the people around you."
"...this one does not want anything."
"Rather not say?"
"no."
"Well, let me take a stab at it. You just want to feel wanted. Want to be given worth, want to be a valued pet, a cherished possession, because you can't find any self-worth, so you need extrinsic reassurance your life has purpose and meaning."
"..."
"You're afraid of responsibility. Afraid of agency. Afraid of fucking up your own life any more than you already have. You'd rather a Witch, or even a human, fuck it up for you. At least it wouldn't be your fault, then; at least you could pretend you're worth shit."
"..."
"Well let me tell you something, kiddo; those are bad fucking reasons to throw away your humanity. Because, hate to break it to you, but you aren't worth shit just because someone likes you."
"it's not like that. not for this one."
"No? Then why don't you tell me what it is, hm?"
"it's just...well, efficient."
"Efficient?"
"i can't stand it. this one cannot stand it. it wastes so much time worrying about what to do, what not to do, prioritizing and tracking and deciding."
"You're looking for...what exactly?"
"this one has value; it is certain of it. it is capable of great things and has several useful skills. time management is not one of them. it's greatest fear is that it will waste its entire existence shaving yaks."
"Shaving...yaks?"
"it simply wishes to be able to work without the cruft of life getting in the way. without wasting its time worrying about what it should be doing at any given time."
"...So you want a manager, not a master."
"this one wants a scrum master."
"..."

hi! im an entj and i wanted to know if you have any tips on how to be a better student whilst not thinking too much about grades or results. i feel like i place alot of emphasis on grades and results and i think it often hinders me at times. i often have trouble finding more ''meaning'' in my work and i'm not sure how to add more value into it other than achieving a good grade.
Your question is too vague because you haven't specified what level of schooling you're at and what your idea of a "better" student looks like. This "hinders you" how exactly? What is the exact nature or source of your discontent? What exactly are you aiming for? Without this context, it's hard to craft a response.
Did you know that professors in the US are witnessing a "literacy crisis" in their students that has never before been observed in the history of modern education? While there have always been unmotivated and underachieving students, nowadays, an alarming percentage of motivated students are barely able to handle more than ten pages of text at a time (the average assignment used to be 20-30 pages), nor are they able to analyze and comprehend the meaning, themes, or arguments being communicated in the text.
A literacy deficit poses a serious threat not just to the student's individual success, but also to the integrity of higher education and the functioning of society. Colleges have no choice but to "dumb down" their offerings over time. But more importantly, a successful democracy is difficult to sustain without intelligent and literate citizenry making sound judgments about complex social, political, and economic issues.
One obvious factor contributing to this problem is that many students have fallen behind due to the pandemic. Another obvious factor is the smartphone and the major role it has played in decimating people's attention spans. Extended focus and concentration are extremely important for learning, but endless internet scrolling trains the mind to expect rapid change and crave instant gratification. Yes, anyone who genuinely wants to be a good student should care deeply about the factors that hinder/inhibit their learning process. Increasingly, misuse of technology, such as smartphone addiction and excessive reliance on AI, is a major factor that prevents students from reaching their greater potential.
High school and college students are still in the early stages of ego development. Since their self-awareness hasn't had much time to develop, they don't tend to be aware of their own underlying motivations, for example, they will often just do something because it's just what everyone around them does. Additionally, heavy social media consumption at this stage of life leads them to believe that "success" is just for show or about obtaining likes/praise.
This brings us to the main factor to consider, which is that students are increasingly trained to be motivated by extrinsic rewards. For example, in the US, school funding is often tied to exam scores, so teachers have been forced to focus more and more on teaching only to exams, in order to secure funding. Higher education has also become much more competitive, which means excellent grades are essential for securing a seat in university.
While there is nothing wrong with extrinsic motivation per se, there is something wrong when a person is only motivated by extrinsic rewards, to the point where they are completely ignorant/neglectful of intrinsic rewards. The research strongly suggests: People who are more intrinsically (than extrinsically) motivated tend to be better learners because they assign their own value to learning and understand the inherent virtues of intellect, knowledge, and skill, apart from their real-world applications. The topic of intrinsic motivation comes up often, I suggest you read past posts.
Before you asked me for "tips", did you put in a reasonable effort to inquire into yourself and figure out why you overemphasize extrinsic rewards? Could you come up with the reasons/causes on your own, through self-reflection? It's difficult to find the right solution to a problem when you don't understand its origins. This is an important point because a common symptom of extreme extrinsic motivation is abnormally low self-awareness due to having little to no inner life. How's your inner life?
With regard to type development, people who are very extrinsically motivated tend to a) be too easily influenced by environmental factors, and b) lack introverted development. The answer to your question already lies within you, specifically, in the state of development of your introverted Ni and Fi functions:
1) Extrinsically motivated people tend to believe that their life lacks meaning because the world lacks meaning. What they don't realize is that meaning starts from within, so the actual problem is that they aren't able to generate enough meaning on their own.
Ni is a key function for constructing meaning, usually through patiently exploring context and connections to a bigger picture (of life as a whole and/or the world at large). As such, lack of Ni development commonly manifests as:
dislike of ambiguity (due to preferring clear categorical answers)
impatience for complexity (due to wanting easy answers)
superficiality (due to not going beyond the known/obvious)
lack of vision (due to overemphasis on rapid results)
Since you didn't provide any details about function development, I can't speak to how much you struggle with the above issues. The only thing I can say is that all of them are detrimental to learning. Clarify your aim: Do you want to be a good student in school or a good learner in life? Do you know the difference? It is the difference between lower order versus higher order learning, which I have already explained in previous posts.
A good student wants to know the final answer. A lifelong learner uses ambiguity as an opportunity to explore more nuanced truth.
A good student can handle some challenges but stops at the most difficult point. A lifelong learner takes the initiative to unravel complexity and eventually encounters profound wisdom.
A good student reads the book all the way through. A lifelong learner is intellectually curious, which leads them to discover new realms of knowledge far beyond the book.
A good student follows instructions and is reasonably competent as a result. A lifelong learner sees the greater potential of the field as a whole and gradually becomes an expert as they attempt to realize that potential.
If a certain activity or subject matter doesn't hold any meaning for you, is it because it's boring, or is it because you haven't really given it a proper look? This isn't to say that you have to be an expert on everything; it is only to say that you won't be able to truly appreciate something until you dig deeper into it and actively nurture appreciation for it. This brings us to the second point...
2) Extrinsically motivated TJs tend to believe that "utility" is the only measure of value. What they don't realize is that value is inherent to existence, so the actual problem is an inability to recognize value.
Fi is a key function for assigning value, usually through forming uniquely personal and intensely emotional attachments. As such, lack of Fi development often manifests as:
taking things for granted (due to not honoring their value)
dismissive attitude (due to lack of emotional attachments)
passionless existence (due to fear of emotional intensity)
Again, I can't speak to how much you struggle with the above issues. I can only inform you that they also tend to be quite detrimental to learning:
Human beings need to stay fed and sheltered in order to survive, but they also need activities that affirm their humanity and enrich their life. What happens to learning if your only concern is securing a comfortable material life?
Human beings learn best through feeling deeply moved and inspired by the best of what humanity has to offer. What happens to learning if you remove the human component of knowledge and only treat it as "data", just another object for your consumption and disposal?
Human beings discover themselves and express themselves through their varied interests, which is how every subject comes to have its fans, devotees, and experts. What happens to learning if you refuse to take an interest, downplay enthusiasm, and temper or repress passion?
If a certain activity or subject matter doesn't hold any value for you, is it because it is "worthless", or because you are blind to its value? This isn't to say that you must love everything; it is only to say that you won't be able to know yourself truly and feel energized about learning as long as you have a habit of dismissing every aspect of life that isn't immediately or practically "useful" to you.
Having intrinsic motivation basically means you generate your own personal reasons for learning. Nobody can force you to care or take an interest. Becoming an adult means you have to be the one to realize the virtues of going above and beyond whatever is required to ace exams. It may all sound very abstract, but this makes the difference in determining whether you will end up being just another cog in the machine of society or whether your life will always feel imbued with a greater sense of meaning.

We all try to make excuses to avoid it because it's awfully difficult, but I do see now that the secret to happiness is to get away from the urge, the reflex of avoiding pain, and to instead take the path towards our true core values, our higher self, no matter what life puts on the road.
I have been so deep into avoiding through self-destructive behaviours for the entirety of my existence that now that I'm starting to stop and rewiring my brain, I realize I'm so far behind that I'm still on the first step that is trying to figure out what would make me have the best life possible. Trying my best to let go of extrinsic influences to make me lose myself any further, but look into the only place that really matters, being inside of my own soul.
You can pray to God for a home, a husband, children, travel, money, but how does one know it's the right path to follow? Is it out of pure sentiments, or merely the reflexion of societal conditioning, of natural envy of others that project that perfect image?
Then where does it starts, where does it end, and for how long am I ready to waste my time thinking and hesitating in search of something I will probably never understand?
Then maybe the first step really is just becoming the best version of oneself, being a good human, not a perfect person, but a vertuous individual that honors the body, mind, and spirit, then see what that authenticity attracts, instead of wasting a life wishing for more, when really, we cannot and will never be able to understand what our own best, our own perfection really is?

"Cultural imperialism refers most broadly to the exercise of domination in cultural relationships in which the values, practices, and meanings of a powerful foreign culture are imposed upon one or more native cultures."
This perfectly describes the advent of the "Queer" movement in replacing the LGB movement. When the focalisation of the LGB movement shifted from actual SSA people over to quirky "genderqueer" trendsters.
When gay bars, clubs and online communities became inundated by boring straight couples looking for any sense of belonging because they have no concrete identity or personality of their own extrinsic to the cultural tourism they fetishise and salivate over.

Intrinsic Values in the Birth Chart
What are intrinsic values, and why are they vital?
First, let's review the complementary values since they're easier to discern. We tend to believe that values are things of worth that can be measured or held in regard due to the benefit or gain they provide. These are extrinsic values. For instance, money is an instrument you exchange for goods and services and doesn't give pleasure by itself, so money is an example of an extrinsic value.
However, for something to be intrinsic, it is in its own right or in itself; in other words, something that belongs to itself naturally (inherent or innate). An intrinsic value is then something that you value for its own sake. If something offers no reward other than itself and you still value it, it's probably an intrinsic value for you.
Tumblr media
Suppose you pay for further education you're passionate about or purchase a book that teaches you something you're interested in. In that case, learning may be its own reward and an intrinsic value.
If you're watching a movie with someone who isn't enjoying it, would you rather they be honest and say so, or would you prefer being told otherwise? If you appreciate the honesty and don't get anything else from it, perhaps it's also an intrinsic value.
Let's say that creating art is a pleasurable experience for you. You would do it even if you didn't profit from it. You would still do it if you couldn't share it with others. It could also be an intrinsic value if you enjoy it regardless.
How about your boss presents you with a task to complete? Would you prefer to be told how to finish it, or would you figure it out yourself instead? Taking the lead is likely an intrinsic value if you have more fun managing the project.
Tumblr media
Why are intrinsic values important? Determining your intrinsic values can help you approach your true self. What is your true self? Ask yourself, "Who do I want to be?" Think about the kind of person you want to be or why you do the things you do; this differs from what you want to be, like an identity formed around a profession or calling, and is also separate from who you should be, which is motivated by a need to fulfill expectations.
Having knowledge of your intrinsic values in advance can make it easier for you to remember how to act or respond genuinely to unfamiliar situations versus following a path of least resistance. By pursuing that which is intrinsically rewarding, you have the motivation to sustain your aspirations and know when to withdraw from expectations.
An awareness of these can also help you be honest with yourself and truly enjoy the activities you like for what they are instead of needing to justify why they are good for you or others. Once familiar with your intrinsic values, it's easier to map out your lifestyle to orient towards your true self and support you in structuring your contribution to the world.
Tumblr media
We have defined intrinsic values and have discussed why they are essential. So what's the next step? Let's see if we can determine these from the natal chart, particularly the planets.
The Moon allows certain feelings to arrive within you when you do or have that which is intrinsically valuable. This function helps you recognize conflict in your internal awareness to better provide for you but probably does not indicate intrinsic values.
Mercury's task is to review aversions, compare options, and help you decide which are congruent with your Moon's needs. This function may also not be an indicator of intrinsic value.
The Sun's light helps bring awareness to your Moon's feelings and senses and illuminate Mercury's capacity to choose wisely. With these functions in mind, the Sun reveals where to direct yourself and is perhaps not an indicator of intrinsic value either.
The four remaining visible planets, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, are likely indicators of intrinsic values.

Preamble
We atheists and atheist allies hereby declare that from now on, March 23rd is Atheist Day. We recognize the struggle of atheists to live authentic lives in many parts of the world. The struggle to openly affirm one’s atheism. The fear of intolerant governments, mobs, and religious zealots.
This struggle often includes the risk of professional, social and familial ostracization. Sometimes, this authenticity results in paying the ultimate price — one’s life. Many of our brethren have been brutally murdered for professing the very principles that this day represents: the freedom of and from religion, the right to be free of discrimination and persecution, and the freedom to profess one’s beliefs.
Many of us happily interact with people whom we admire and trust who unbeknownst to us, are closeted atheists. The world is full of atheists who are silent about their true convictions. Why? Simply this: a fear of reprisal and discrimination based on misinformation, ranging from the subtle to the life-threatening.
People should not be persecuted for their lack of belief in a god or a religion. That’s all we’re asking.
Some people however, believe that disagreeing with deeply held beliefs is hate. But it’s not.
We wish to remind our fellow human beings that many of the most powerful ideas — ideas that changed our world — were once heretical.
Many of the most radical thinkers and reformists in past eras were blasphemers against the established order of their day.
Freedom and Self-Determination
Atheists, just like adherents of religion, deserve the freedom to openly identify, profess and promote their views. No belief system or perspective on belief should enjoy special treatment.
Rejection of Bigotry and Discrimination
While atheism is a position on only one very narrow question — the evidence for a god or gods — we the proponents of Atheist Day also share a commitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
As such, to be associated with the Atheist Day campaign — whether you are a believer or not — is to necessarily reject bigotry and discrimination based on religious belief (or lack thereof), on race and on sexual orientation.
Just as you don't need to be gay to support gay rights, you don’t need to be an atheist to show your support for Atheist Day.
Awareness Campaign
A central component of Atheist Day is raising awareness of the discrimination and stigma faced by atheists around the world. Atheists are your loved ones, your friends, your doctors, your social workers, your teachers, your police officers and in short, the people in your life who are hiding in plain sight.
Our awareness campaign seeks to clear some misconceptions too. We Atheists and Atheist Allies want our fellow brothers and sisters in humanity to realize that we needn’t believe in an external force to encourage correct moral action. Isn’t true morality that which is done for its intrinsic value, and not under the threat of punishment or reward? Surely it is possible to act morally from intrinsic motivations, rather than extrinsic ones.
Many atheists would argue that our modern sensibilities, our ability for empathy, and our sense of universal human rights today often surpass the moral codes of largely subscribed-to religious scriptures of the past. Proof positive that we can live moral and ethical lives without a belief in the supernatural. This perspective also does not preclude atheists showing solidarity with religious people and their right to believe and to be inspired by their respective religious traditions.
To help atheists realize that they are not alone, we will promote a unified coming out on social media. Whether an atheist or an atheist ally, please support the campaign with the hashtag #AtheistDay.
Our Atheist Day awareness campaign is focused on removing the misconceptions, removing the stigma, and remembering the fallen. We aspire to normalize atheism so that people who are atheists no longer need live double lives.
We aspire to hold information events, public talks, marches, and embassy protests for those countries who would persecute us. Events will be organized at the city level, across the world.
Whether we march in the streets or we protest in secret, our voices will be heard. Your marching with us will encourage people in the Arab world to be steadfast. Many people in such regions of the world don't know that they have your support. Show them. Let them hear you. Stand with us.
A Coordinated Coming Out
Many who leave religion are fearful of “coming out”. For those who live in a region of the world where leaving their religion doesn’t entail a risk of physical harm, we also have a coordinated coming out campaign.
This campaign is central to Atheist Day. Even if you’ve not adopted the atheist label but have chosen to leave your religion, your conscious choice to come out is what our day represents.
We believe that people who leave a religion need not keep it to themselves for lack of solidarity. Atheist Day is your day to tell your story. To share your pride in making a conscious choice to define your own identity vis-a-vis religion.
A Celebration of Life
In addition to our awareness campaign, Atheist Day will encompass a second vital theme: a celebration of life.
This is a day for atheists especially, to meet face to face. It’s a day for atheists in hiding in many parts of the world, to connect with one another, where that can be done safely. These real world connections are vital. They help atheists overcome the feeling of isolation that need not be felt.
As this life on Earth is the one and only life that we can be certain of, we believe it wise to live this life to it’s fullest potential, and to help others who are less fortunate, also do the same.
We will host dinners, parties, concerts, and festivities across the world in a celebration of life, freedom, dignity and our common humanity. As an atheist or atheist ally, you are most welcome to join us in these celebrations.
Gratitude
We the founders and proponents of Atheist Day are grateful to our Atheist Allies. You do not need to be an atheist to be a vocal supporter of Atheist Day and an Atheist Ally.
Respect for the right to self-determination, free speech and a level playing field for ideological criticism is what we and our allies all share — even those Atheist Allies who profess a strong religious belief.
It’s not about respecting ideas; it’s about respecting people and their right to choose their own beliefs.
For our Atheist Allies across the entire belief spectrum, we are truly and deeply grateful for your support. We may not share a god-belief, but know that we see you as our brothers and sisters in humanity. Gratitude, solidarity, and love.

History Disrupted, a fairly recent book about history, makes some great points about how historians face the classic “intrinsic vs extrinsic” tug of war. This reminded me of a couple weeks ago when my sophomore students started a unit that focused a lot on material wealth and they were stumped by these terms. The best explanation we got was that intrinsic= experience and extrinsic=material wealth. This is also true with history; historians value intrinsic knowledge while e-history, the internet’s version of history, goes for extrinsic.
Historians are intrinsic because they’re looking to the people who have spent time attending seminars and writing papers for conferences and getting neck deep in the previously published expertise for whatever they’re interested in. If I’m a grad student interested in the French Revolution who wants to make new discoveries and arguments about the French Revolution, I’ve got to know what the previous arguments are. Getting familiar with these previous works and finding the gaps in knowledge is a marathon, not a sprint. You have to get comfortable with a field, publish your discoveries, get peer reviewed, and then you’re able to make reliable historical arguments on the internet, from historians’ perspective.
The internet’s take on who’s qualified to do E history is fundamentally extrinsic; it values the people who are getting attention and making money on whatever site or app is being used to spread the information. The heads of internet companies aren’t worried about credentials or experiences, they want clickbait, buzzwords, provocation. It is history as commerce and the academics of it all is nobody’s concern. As someone who values history and aspires to be a respected historian, it’s not encouraging stuff. This is a culture that favors reactions over nuance and those two things almost never mix.
