Time and Chase
Pairing: Five Hargreeves x Fem! OC
Author's Note: Hello and welcome. This is a major throwback but we are kicking off my TUA series of fics all the way from season one so that this story actually makes sense. Or about as much sense as it can be. I will be posting daily. *Please note that I am well aware that Elliot Page portrays Viktor, but due to season one being before his transition, that is why his character is still Vanya. I am not deadnaming him and I sincerely hope I don't come across as such. I will transition when I write season three.*
Warnings: Long post, mentions of Reginald's death, blood, violence (looking at you Diego and Luther), and cursing.

We Only See Each Other At Weddings And Funerals
~ * ~
On the first day of October, 1989, forty-three women around the world simultaneously gave birth. None of the women showed any prior signs of pregnancy. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and playboy adventurer, made it his personal mission to find and adopt as many of these children as possible.
He got seven of them.
~ * ~
March 24th, 2019
A bright blue light flashed outside the window, causing all the Hargreeves to abruptly pause their dance party. Crashes and the sound of shattering windows occurred from the crazy winds.
Luther, Diego, Allison, and Vanya Hargreeves all rushed outside into the courtyard to see what exactly was going on. A bright, blue orb was forming in the darkening, swirling clouds in the sky.
"What is it?" Vanya yelled above the howling wind.
"Don't get too close!" Allison warned.
"Yeah, no shit," Diego shot.
"Looks like some sort of temporal anomaly. Either that or a miniature black hole. One of the two!" Luther tried to make sense.
"Pretty big difference there, Paul Bunyan," Diego remarked.
Suddenly, Klaus Hargreeves came scurrying out of the house with a fire extinguisher in his grasp. "Out of the way!"
"What are you…?" Luther trailed off.
Klaus chucked the fire extinguisher at the portal with all his might and the portal just swallowed it.
"What is that gonna do?" Allison cried.
"I don't know. Do you have a better idea?"
The portal began to crackle as two figures seemed to be forming.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Everyone get behind me!" Luther instructed with authority, pushing his siblings behind him.
"Yeah, get behind us," Diego spoke up with a hint of jealousy.
"I vote for running! Come on!" Klaus exclaimed.
More electricity crackled as the two people fell out of the portal and screamed when they landed. The thunder faded, along with the clouds and the blue portal. The siblings slowly crept over as their long-lost brother, Five Hargreeves, along with a young blonde girl groaned and stumbled to their feet.
"Does anyone else see little Number Five and a random teenage girl, or is that just me?" Klaus questioned.
Five and the girl looked at one another, seeing that they were back in their thirteen year old bodies.
"Shit!" they both exclaimed in disbelief.
Five led the girl off, leaving their rather speechless siblings to process the fact that their brother returned. More or less brought a girl with him.
They fumbled after the two as Five blinked himself and the girl into the basement kitchen. The rest of his family piled onto the other side of the table. Rather hungry, Five began making some peanut butter and marshmallow sandwiches.
"What's the date?" Five questioned.
"The exact date," the girl added.
Vanya frowned. "The 24th."
"Of what?" Five prodded her onwards.
"March."
"Good."
"So, are we gonna talk about what just happened?" Luther wanted to know.
Five ignored him, still fixing his sandwich. The girl was sitting next to him, awkwardly watching him and his siblings. The others exchanged a glance, wondering who she was.
"It's been 17 years," Luther stood up.
Five scoffed. "It's been a lot longer than that." He blinked around the male to grab some peanut butter and marshmallows.
"I haven't missed that," Luther sighed as Five blinked back to the table where his sandwich awaited.
"Where'd you go?" Diego asked.
"The future. It's shit, by the way," Five replied.
"Called it!" Klaus piped up.
"I should've listened to the old man. You know, jumping through space is one thing, jumping through time is a toss of the dice," Five rambled, looking at his family.
"Nice dress," the girl complimented Klaus almost shyly.
"Oh, well, danke!" Klaus beamed.
"Wait, how did you get back?" Vanya inquired.
"In the end, I had to project our consciousnesses forward into a suspended quantum state version of ourselves that exists across every possible instance of time," Five explained.
"That makes no sense," Diego shot.
"Well, it would if you were smarter," Five shot back instantly.
"Five," the girl chided him in a warning tone as Diego sprang to his feet, though Luther held his arm out to block Diego.
"How long were you there?" Luther wanted to know.
"Forty-five years. Give or take," Five glanced at the girl and she nodded.
"So what are you saying? That you're both 58?" Luther continued.
Five eyed him. "No, our consciousnesses are 58. Apparently, our bodies are now 13 again."
"Wait, how does that even work?" Allison was confused.
"Rina kept saying the equations were off," Five handed her a sandwich. She thanked him softly. "Eh. Bet you're laughing now," he remarked.
"Rina?" Vanya echoed in confusion.
"Hmm. Guess I missed the funeral," Five picked up a newspaper, missing Vanya's question completely.
"How'd you know about that?" Luther looked at him.
"What part of the future do you not understand?" Five scoffed. "Heart failure, huh?"
"Yeah. No," Luther and Diego answered in unison.
"Hmmm," Five clicked his tongue. "Nice to see nothing's changed." He began to walk away with a sandwich in his hand.
"Uh, that's it? That's all you have to say?" Allison called after him.
"What else is there to say? The circle of life," Five left the room.
The siblings turned to the girl now.
"Okay. Who are you?" Diego crossed his arms.
"Um…I'm Karina Hargreeves," she replied nervously, slowly getting to her feet.
"Hargreeves?" they all echoed.
Five blinked into the room and to her rescue. "Karina, meet the Umbrella Academy. Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, and Vanya? Meet my wife: Karina."
"WIFE?!" they all shrieked.
"You're thirteen!" Allison cried.
"No we're not!" Five remarked.
With that, he blinked out of the room with Karina before his siblings could interrogate the two any more.
"Your siblings seem like something," Karina commented after he blinked the two into his bedroom.
"That's one way to put it," Five shifted around in his closet to find something new to wear that wasn't the suit three times his size. "Ah, shit." He pulled out an Academy uniform. He looked over at her. "You can probably just borrow something from Allison."
Karina looked down at her clothes that surprisingly weren't overly large for her body. Just a bit baggy. "No. I'll be fine."
Five just nodded before she stepped out to let him change. A few minutes later the door swung open.
"You know, our rings are probably a bit too big," he commented as he came out.
"I don't think I have an extra chain for you," Karina bit her lip.
Five paused for a moment, suddenly blinking out. She waited for him and after about five or ten minutes, he reappeared.
"Problem solved. Allison let me have them," he handed a chain to her.
They slid their rings onto the chains and slipped the necklaces on. They tucked the rings beneath their shirts.
And with that, Five blinked them downstairs to go to the funeral. Along the way, he stared up at the portrait of himself hanging above the fireplace. Karina just stood next to him before Vanya joined the room.
"Nice to know Dad didn't forget me," he commented, turning to his sister. "We read your book, by the way. Found it in a library that was still standing."
"I thought it was pretty good, all things considered," Karina added quietly.
"Yeah, definitely ballsy, giving up the family secrets. Sure that went over well," Five continued.
Vanya was looking down. "They hate me."
"Oh, there are worse things that can happen," Five pointed out.
"You mean like what happened to Ben?" Vanya eyed him.
"Was it bad?" Five wanted to know.
She nodded sadly and he was grief stricken. Karina gazed at them sadly before he glanced at her and shifted over, gently tucking her hand into the crook of his arm to guide her out into the courtyard.
His siblings, Pogo, and Grace filed out into the rainy courtyard. Karina was between Klaus and Five, with Five sharing an umbrella with her.
"Did something happen?" Grace looked around confusedly, causing everyone to glance at her in concern.
"Dad died. Remember?" Allison frowned.
"Oh. Yes, of course."
"Is Mom okay?"
"Yeah, yeah, she's fine. She just needs to rest. You know, recharge," Diego assured.
"Whenever you're ready, dear boy," Pogo told Luther, who had the urn with Sir Reginald's ashes.
Luther dumped the ashes and tried to sprinkle them around. "Probably would have been better with some wind."
"Does anyone wish to speak?" Pogo inquired, though he was met with silence. "Very well. In all regards, Sir Reginald Hargreeves made me what I am today. For that alone, I shall forever be in his debt. He was my master…and my friend, and I shall miss him very much. He leaves behind a complicated legacy."
"He was a monster," Diego bitterly cut in and Klaus gave a laugh. "He was a bad person and a worse father. The world's better off without him."
"Diego," Allison warned him.
"My name is Number Two. You know why? Because our father couldn't be bothered to give us actual names. He had Mom do it."
"Would anyone like something to eat?" Grace asked.
"No, it's okay, Mom," Vanya replied.
"Oh, okay."
"Look, you wanna pay your respects? Go ahead. But at least be honest about the kind of man he was," Diego continued, stepping forward.
"You should stop talking now," Luther spoke up coldly.
Diego whipped to face him. "You know, you of all people should be on my side here, Number One."
Klaus, Five, and Karina exchanged a glance.
"I am warning you," Luther seethed.
"After everything he did to you? He had to ship you a million miles away," Diego was taunting now.
"Diego, stop talking."
"That's how much he couldn't stand the sight of you!" Diego shouted before Luther grabbed his arm and swung at him, but Diego ducked.
The brothers began to fight now. Vanya pulled an oblivious Grace back while Klaus tried to push Five and Karina back. Five swatted his hand away, though he nudged Karina behind him.
"Boys, stop this at once!" Pogo scolded loudly.
The two ignored him, punching and hitting one another.
"Come on, big boy!" Diego shot arrogantly.
"Stop it!" Vanya exclaimed.
"Hit him! Hit him!" Klaus cheered his brothers on.
Pogo sighed and scoffed, shaking his head before leaving.
"Get off me!" Luther cried. He and Diego were still fighting it out.
"We don't have time for this," Five was disgusted, taking Karina with him before the two left the "funeral".
Later on, Klaus, Five, and Karina were in the basement kitchen. Things had been slowly calming down after the funeral, but the three of them wanted to further avoid Luther and Diego at the moment.
Currently, Five was raiding the cabinets for coffee and Karina was sipping a cup of tea he brewed for her.
"Where's Vanya?" Allison suddenly came into the room.
"Oh, she's gone," Klaus answered.
"That's unfortunate," Karina took a sip of her tea. Out of all the siblings, Vanya seemed the quietest and calmest to her.
Allison nodded. "Yeah."
"An entire square block. Forty-two bedrooms, 19 bathrooms, but not a single drop of coffee," Five complained.
"Dad hated caffeine," Allison pointed out.
"Well, he hated children, too, and he had plenty of us," Klaus laughed bitterly.
"I'm taking the car," Five announced, causing Karina to eye him.
"Where are you going?" Klaus immediately sat up.
Five eyed him narrowly. "To get a decent cup of coffee."
"Do you even know how to drive?" Allison crossed her arms.
"I know how to do everything," Five boasted and then looked at Karina. "Care to join me?"
Karina sighed. "I need to get some things first. Care to drop me off at home?"
He nodded, offering his arm for her. She smiled and took it, letting him lead her out.
Klaus and Allison watched in some astonishment.
"I feel like we should try and stop them, but then again, I also just kinda want to see what happens," Klaus commented in their wake, wondering when Five got a soft side.
Five blinked out of the house and in front of another house, terrifyingly familiar to Karina.
"Are you sure you want to be here?" Five asked her in deep concern.
Karina sighed. "I'm just getting some personal items. I'll be quick. You go on and get your coffee."
"Are you sure you want me to leave?"
"Yes. Go on, I'll be fine. You'll know where to find me later on, I hope?"
"I have an inkling. You're more than welcome to stay at the mansion with us though. After all, you are family," Five returned.
"I'll think about it."
Five sighed and nodded. He gave her forehead a quick, small, but soft kiss and blinked out. Karina looked up at the house nervously, before she climbed the steps up to her first home. She let herself inside quietly. The place was dark, cold, and empty. She sighed and quickly went into her room. She packed a suitcase of clothes and personal items before she left the house, lucky that nobody was home or knew she was home.
~ * ~
Karina liked the idea staying at the luxurious Hargreeves Mansion, but she wasn't feeling up to the partial scrutiny and partial interrogations of Five's rather intimidating siblings. So instead she sought out her second, though true home: a small, cozy living space above the bookstore and next to the storage room her mother arranged in case she needed the place. Or her mother used to own. She wasn't sure if her mother was still around, to be honest.
Five was out getting his cup of coffee, so, she suspected he'd probably either stay at the mansion to sort his family out or come find her as he told her. One of the two.
It probably deemed suspicious to see a thirteen year old, out at night, letting herself into a seemingly closed bookstore. She already knew it might raise questions if she was caught. That was why she went through the back. The front was easier to access, of course, but she didn't want to draw any unwanted attention.
Karina sighed, unlocking the door (she was shocked her seemingly outdated key still worked) and slipping inside. The smell of books, leather, pages, and stories filled the air which calmed her. Though, she also caught a whiff of something else. She shook her head, heading past the shelves and up the stairs in the back. She got to the upstairs part and unlocked the door.
Five was already sitting there, drinking a cup of coffee with a book in his hand.
"Hello there…" Karina slowly greeted. "How did you find this place?"
"I remember you telling me and showing me. Well, at least what remained of it. By the way, your store door and your apartment door were unlocked," he commented nonchalantly.
Why were you even checking them in the first place? Kind of creepy she thought.
"Since when did locks keep you out?" Karina returned, slipping inside.
"Just wanted to let you know for your own safety, dear."
"You have such a strange way of showing your care sometimes," she shut the door.
"Well, to be honest, I thought you'd be at the Academy," Five watched her slide her coat and scarf off.
"I considered it. But, I didn't want to overstay my welcome after what happened," Karina hung up her purse and keys.
"I would have made sure my family left you alone."
Karina hummed lightly as she sat down on the couch. She looked at Five and her eyebrows furrowed when she saw a bloodstain on his collar. "Is that blood?" she was concerned.
"It's nothing," Five played it off casually.
"Okay, let me ask you this. Why are you here instead of with your siblings?" Karina decided not to press him.
"Did you not see the shit show of a funeral we were at earlier?"
She sighed, bothered by the sight of blood. She went over to the medical cabinet and pulled out a little kit before going back to Five. He wordlessly rolled his sleeve up, revealing the cut where he dug out his tracker. Karina grimaced when she saw the wound, removing the bloodied cloth and starting to clean/patch him up. Five silently watched her.
"Are you going to tell me what happened?" Karina asked after she was done.
"They found me. At that restaurant. They know what we did," Five answered.
She shook her head. "I had a feeling they would catch on. I just didn't expect it to be this soon."
"Did they attack you?"
"No. I'm okay."
"It won't be too long before they'll be after the both of us. You know that."
"I'm sure we can handle it together."
Five gazed into her eyes. "I have to stop the apocalypse first. The world ends in eight days, Rina."
"We have to stop it. I know I'm ordinary, but I'm still here to help," Karina retorted.
"I know. I just can't risk seeing you hurt."
"I worked at The Commission. Same as you. I don't think avoiding getting hurt is going to be as easy as your heart desires."
"I'll take my chances," Five just held up his cup and Karina gave him a look.
"Really making yourself at home, I see," she mused.
"Got anything stronger?"
"Why, you haven't already raided my liquor cabinet?" Karina lightly mocked him.
"It was the only thing in your home that was locked."
Karina rolled her eyes, going over into the kitchen. She unlocked the cabinet and pulled out a bottle of whiskey. She poured two glasses and returned to the sofa, handing Five a glass. He gave her a nod and the two downed the drinks rather quickly.
"So what happened to you?" Karina wanted to know.
"Just a shoot out. Got a bit messy, but, I removed the tracker from my arm. That was it," he explained.
"At least you were able to get out."
"I'm still surprised they haven't gone after you yet."
"Well if they do, I'll make sure to lock the doors," Karina grabbed the glasses and got up to wash them.
Five blinked in front of her, stopping her in her steps. "I have a lead. On who or what may cause the apocalypse so we can stop it."
"I thought you said you didn't know how to stop it."
"I don't. But maybe I can start with this," he held up a prosthetic eye.
"Ugh, how long have you've been carrying that thing around in your pocket?" Karina wrinkled her nose in some disgust.
"I cleaned it when we got to The Commission. I want to find the company that made the eye."
"Okay. And?"
Five sighed in very slight irritation. "I would like you to come with me."
"Oh. You could have just said that to begin with," Karina pointed out, gliding past him to the kitchen.
God help me he thought.
"I thought you would have known."
"When you use I instead of we, of course not."
Five could be stubbornly independent. Even though the two have been together for longer than their current ages, he still struggled with verbally including Karina in his plans sometimes.
"Okay, okay. We. I get it."
Karina softly smiled and pressed a gentle kiss on his cheek.
"Wait. Where are you going?" Five called after her, watching her head to the bedroom.
"It's late? I'm tired? I was going to try to get some sleep."
"Oh. I was going to pay Vanya a visit."
"You were?" Karina glanced at the clock.
"Someone needs to know why we're here."
"And you want me to go with you?"
"If you want."
"Sure. Why not. Guess I should get to know the in-laws while I have the chance."
Five nodded, taking her hand into his arm and blinking the two out of her home and into Vanya's place. He plopped down on the sofa with Karina by his side. Soon the door unlocked and Vanya slipped in. Five turned on the lamp.
"Jesus!" Vanya jumped, not expecting to see the couple in her apartment.
"You should have locks on your windows," Five casually told her and Karina gave him a look for it.
"I live on the second floor," Vanya sighed.
"Rapists can climb."
"You are so weird," Vanya voiced what Karina was thinking. "Is that blood?" Vanya then noticed the bloodstain on his collar.
"It's nothing. Rina took care of it," he replied.
"Why are you here?" Vanya wanted to know.
Five sighed. "I've decided you're the only one I can trust out of all the siblings."
"Why me?" Vanya sat down across from them.
"Because you're ordinary," Five responded almost matter-of-factly.
Vanya winced and Karina nudged his side.
"Because you'll listen," he corrected himself.
"Okay," Vanya nodded.
"When I jumped forward and got stuck in the future, do you know what I found?" Five continued.
"No."
"Nothing. Absolutely nothing. As far as I could tell, I was the last person left alive. Until Rina came around. We never figured out what killed the human race, but…we did find something else. The date it happens. The world ends in eight days, and I have no idea how to stop it," he said.
Vanya stared at them for a moment and took a deep breath. "I'll put on a pot of coffee."

RPTL-Therapy
Tumblr media
Summary: Danielle is finally getting better
Pairing: Eventually Elliot can fem!OC
Warnings: none this chapter.
Word Count: 667 this is a short chapter, but it's a step in the right direction
This is an au. Kathy and the kids don't exist
Three months had passed since Danielle's attackers were put in jail. They had been given 20 years for their crimes with no chance of parole before then. The Army had stripped them of their rank, their pension, and given them a dishonorable discharge. Knowing they were locked away and stripped of everything made her feel more at ease.
She still hadn't moved out of Elliot's place. It wasn't that she couldn't, she had found a job and made enough to get an apartment, but she felt safer with him. Despite her attackers being locked away she still liked having him around. His presence calmed her, made her happy, and helped her feel safe. There was more she felt, but she wasn't sure she was willing to admit that yet.
In the three months they had been together she had opened up more and became better with affection. She often kissed his cheek, hugged him of her own accord, and easily accepted the attention he gave her. She looked forward to cuddling, watching movies, and having him rub her back or play with her hair. She also liked falling asleep in his arms. Nothing more than that had happened, but she did want it to. It was something she planned to talk to her therapist about at her next appointment.
Tumblr media
Danielle sat on the comfortable chair across from her therapist. She looked around the room, taking in everything as the woman pulled up her file. She liked the soft green of the walls, the beige carpet, the children's paintings on the wall, and the inspirational cat poster. She always felt at ease when she was in this room.
Dottie Monroe smiled over at Danielle. "I can see the happiness in your eyes. I take it you've been well since our last meeting."
She nodded. "I have. Things are going well. My job is great. I work in the children's wing of the hospital. Being able to make those kids smile if only for a short time warms my heart."
"That's good." Dottie leaned back a little. "And your home life? Are you still with Elliot?"
She blushed and nodded. "Yeah. We still live together."
The therapist smiled seeing the blush. "Any plans to look for your own place soon? I know you said Elliot kept the nightmares at bay. Is that still the case?"
"No, no plans to find another place. He does. I mean they're getting a little better. Able to sleep most nights even when he isn't there."
She made some notes. "Good. While having him as an anchor is good you need to be able to self sooth or find your own coping mechanisms. Which you've made progress on and I'm proud of you. So anything new in your life?"
Danielle rubbed her neck. She knew she needed to have this conversation. That she needed to get her thoughts out to someone other than herself. "Yeah. Um...it's about Elliot. I uh...noticed when we met how good looking he was. And I felt comfortable with him before anyone else. Lately I've been having dreams and thoughts."
Dottie nodded. "I'm assuming they're romantic or sexual in nature?"
She felt her cheeks heat up all the way to her ears. "Yes. I haven't told him yet. Not sure how to. It's been a long time since I really dated. Being in the army didn't give me much of a chance."
"Understandable. I don't think you need to worry. With everything you've told me about Elliot and how he's been with you there should be no reason for you to worry about it."
She spent another thirty minutes talking to her therapist about her life, nightmares, and coping mechanisms. She took some papers with things to help her and went home.
Tumblr media
Danielle noticed Elliot was home when she got there. She walked to the kitchen and saw him sitting at the table. "Hey. Can we talk?"
Elliot nodded. "Sure. What about?" He sat his coffee down.
"Well…"

revenge of the nerd // sam golbach
A/N: the inspiration behind this fic is the photo below of sam. idk what came over me when i saw them (or the first time he wore that outfit), but i immediately had a whole fic idea when he posted them. i didn’t make this a y/n insert bc… the main character is super unlikable bc she is comically a popular girl, and i highly doubt any of yall want to be put in those shoes lol but anyway please tell me what you think about this fic ! i enjoyed writing it so hopefully you enjoy reading it.
prompt: stacy doesn’t like anyone that isn’t popular, and that includes sam. but when dared to kiss him, will she give into her feelings or win the bet?|| fem OC x sam golbach
trigger warning: SMUT, cursing, drinking/partying, over-the-top popular!OC, think of teenage comedy levels of caring about popularity but set in college, sam is a “nerd”, slight dubcon… but not really??, she actually likes it but won’t admit it at first, but then gives in, so… just be aware of that if that’s something you don’t like

Tumblr media
Being popular has always been my number one priority, ever since high school. I surrounded myself with only popular people; jocks, cheerleaders, - pretty people - and have kept it that way since I was 15. Now I'm 22, about to graduate college, and I'm still popular. I joined the best sorority at my school, cheer for our elite football team, and only talk to and socialize with the coolest fraternities on our campus. The idea of being around uncool people, nerds, is so... gross to me. Do they not realize how low on the totem pole they are? Like, why would you strive to be a loser?
"This party is so fucking lame." Heather, my best friend, sighed.
I nodded. "It's because Jared won't put on the good playlist, the one with all the early 2000s hits."
"What I would do for a Missy Elliot song right now..." Heather groaned.
I rolled my eyes. "I'll go tell him."
"You know he isn't gonna change it." She called back.
"You underestimate my abilities." I winked.
I shuffled through the party, making my way over to Jared who was by the speakers. Before reaching him, I pulled my skirt up, letting it show just a little of my ass, and shifting my bra around so my breasts were up and closer to my chin.
I seductively strolled up to Jared, lightly laying a hand on his shoulder. His eyes remained on his laptop. "What's up, Stacy?"
“Hey Jared, I was just wondering if you were taking some song requests.” I asked softly.
He shook his head, finally looking up at me. “Not at the moment, no.”
I held back my distain of the music playing around us, keeping my voice sweet. “Me and Heather would really appreciate it if you could play some early 2000s songs instead of... whatever this playlist is.”
“I don't know. I haven't heard anyone complaining.” He commented.
My voice dropped, annoyed. “I have. Plus, no one is dancing. If you play, let's say, a Missy Elliot song, people would dance. Girls... would be dancing.”
He glanced up at me, his eyes narrowing for a moment. Then he scanned my body up and down. "Would you dance?"
"Absolutely." I whispered, leaning towards him.
He cleared his throat. “After this song... I’ll play some Missy.”
"Perfect. You're ama-" A loud bunch of laughs cut me off, making me look up. Around a table right near us, were the worst kind of people. The type of people that stick out the most at parties.
Nerds.
I gasped, staring at them. "Who invited them?"
“Those guys? They're cool, Stacy.” Jared responded.
I scoffed. “Highly doubt that.”
“No seriously. I met them in a business class of mine. They're chill.” He replied.
One of them glanced up in our direction, their blue eyes landing on me. He flicked his blonde hair out of his eyes, looking me up and down.
“Who's that one?” I questioned.
Jared stared up at the group. “That’s Sam. He's really dope.”
“A man wearing that colorful of a shirt and khakis can't be dope. It's impossible.” I doubted, crossing my arms.
“Stacy, being friends with people outside of sororities and fraternities won't make you become a loser. Lighten up.” He remarked.
I turned to him, smiling bitterly. “So, are you gonna play that Missy Elliot song or not?”
Jared raised his eyebrows, scrolling over to the search bar on Spotify, and changed the song to 'Work It'. A bunch of people in the party cheered and I patted Jared’s shoulder. "Thank you."
When I looked back up at the party, that Sam guy was still staring at me. But he had a weird look on his face. He looked me over again, rolled his eyes, and took a swig of his drink.
Gross.
!!!!!
"Alright, alright. Who's ready for spin the bottle?" Heather yelled.
The party had been going on for a couple hours at this point, and everyone was feeling a bit buzzed. This was Heather's go-to to keep the party going.
Everyone in the room clapped and laughed, sitting closer to each other as a glass bottle was placed on the floor.
I sat down, smiling up at Heather. I gazed around the circle, looking at who was playing with us. A couple cute guys stuck out to me. I couldn’t help but bite my lip at all the different hotties.
"Okay, Stacy. Why don't you start us off?" Heather chuckled.
"With pleasure." I sat forward, gripped the bottle and spun it fast. It went around multiple times and finally slowed down. The bottle pointed to the left of me. I looked up, hoping one of the cute guys I saw was there, but instead... it was Sam.
Fuck! I didn't even see him!
His friends around him patted his shoulder, congratulating him.
“He's cute.” Heather mentioned, raising her eyebrows at me.
“I think the fuck not. Are you sure there isn’t someone else I can kiss?” I quickly stood up to meet Sam.
“Oh no. But we're gonna give you guys a more private setting to do this in.” Heather shoved me towards the closet, Sam's friends forcing him in as well. Before I could protest, the light to the closet was turned on as the door was slammed shut.
The light thumping of the music mixed with our breathing. I let out a huge sigh and leaned against the wall, trying not to knock over the coats next to me.
"I thought this was spin the bottle, not seven minutes in heaven." Sam mumbled jokingly.
I barked back. “So you know, I will not be kissing you.”
“Hey, that's your choice. I don't mind.” He threw his hands up defensively.
I hummed, my hands resting on my hips. “I'm surprised. I would think you would give any chance to kiss a girl.”
He scrunched up his face. “...Why would you think that?”
“Have you ever even kissed a girl?” I inquired.
“Yes I have. With tongue too.” He mockingly gasped, “I've also had sex.”
“That's surprising.” I deadpanned.
He cocked his head slowly. “Is there a reason why you don't like me? You don't even know me.”
“Look, I've tried my hardest to stay as far away from people like you since I was a freshman in high school.” I stated.
“And who are people like me?” Sam puzzled.
“Losers. Nerds. Non jocks and cheerleaders. You know, people who aren't popular.” I hissed.
He held back a laugh. “Wow. People like you actually exist?”
I scowled at him. “What the hell does that mean?”
“You still care about popularity.” He answered.
I jeered. “Like you don't.”
“No. I’m not still in high school.” He snapped back.
I rolled my eyes. “Whatever...”
The silence in the closet was heavy, boring me senseless. I glanced at Sam. He seemed lost in thought for a second, and finally our eyes connected.
“The only reason you won't kiss me is because I'm a nerd?” He asked.
“Yeah. I know how guys like you kiss. It's gross and not worth it.” I retorted, leaning against the wall.
He sassed. “I thought you said you don't go near people like me.”
“Well, you gotta kiss a frog or two before you find a prince.” I explained.
He raised an eyebrow at me. “How about I dare you?”
“Dare me to what?” I glared.
Sam bit his lip, holding back a smirk. “I dare you to kiss me. If you hate it, you can go out to that party and tell everyone that I suck at kissing and that I’m a loser.”
“You already are that.” I spoke, mocking his smile.
“Yeah, but now you can announce it to everyone.” He added, getting closer, “You can embarrass me in front of all your friends… maybe then they’ll realize what a loser I am.”
I paused, humming for a second. Finally, I looked back at him, sitting up. “Humiliating you does sound like so much fun.”
“But what if you lose?” He questioned, his voice low.
I held back a snort, stepping up to him and slowly moving my hands to his shoulders. “If I lose? That’s cute.”
He grabbed my wrists before I could even touch him. “If you lose, I get the satisfaction of knowing you liked it and that I, maybe, turned you on.”
“Right, okay.” I snickered, rolling my eyes.
“I’m serious.” His voice deepened, his eyes narrowing in on my lips.
I shrugged, freeing my wrists from his surprisingly gentle grasp. “Fine. Whatever. Just kiss me so we can get this over with.”
Sam leaned in quickly, his lips connecting with mine. The kiss was soft, sweet. Something I hadn't really experienced all that much with guys. Most guys I got with were rough, which was fine, but this... was a nice change of pace.
I mean, for a nerd.
Sam lightly cupped my hips, his thumbs rubbing my skin. I drifted my hands up to his shoulders, tracing his collarbone with my fingers. His tongue glided across my bottom lip. I inhaled at the movement.
Does he really think I'm gonna let him put his tongue in my mouth?
Suddenly, I felt his one hand snake across every one of my curves as it moved up my body, his hand finally stopping to tangle his fingers into my hair. Then his other hand drifted down and smacked my ass, squeezing it firmly. I gasped against his lips and his tongue slithered into my mouth. He tasted intoxicating, like mint and vodka. As our tongues danced against each other, I pushed my body closer to him, deepening the kiss.
What the fuck am I doing?! Am I really... liking this?
No! Of course not. He's the one that needs to be humiliated, not me.
Before I could even think to pull away, he backed me up until my body was forced up against the wall, taking me by surprise. The hand in my hair pulled lightly on my locks, making me almost moan into our kiss. His other hand massaged my upper thigh, rubbing circles into my almost exposed skin. His hand dipped lower, grazing the back of my knee and bringing it to around his hip.
He pressed his body against mine, forcing my other leg to spread open further. Then suddenly, he began to grind his hips against mine. The slow thrusts made me feel dizzy for a moment, my body flushed with heat.
I must be going crazy... this feels so good.
Sam ripped his mouth away from mine, kissing across my jaw and down my neck. He found my favorite spot, under my earlobe, and began to suck and nibble on the skin. Hearing and feeling his breath so close to my ear made my stomach do cartwheels.
I bit my lip hard, trying to keep my moans from escaping. I knew I shouldn't be liking this, but I couldn't stop myself. I couldn't help but feel turned on by Sam's actions. He really knew what to do to make me wet.
My cheeks turned even more pink as I felt the dampness in my panties grow. I hadn't even realize how turned on I had become. Sam's mouth drifted even further down and kissed the tops of my breasts.
I felt his name leave my mouth in a breathy whisper. His piercing blue eyes glanced up at me for a second, an almost smirk appearing on his lips.
Oh my God, the bet! I completely forgot about it.
One of his hands rested high up on the leg that was wrapped around his waist. I could feel it inching closer and closer to my sex, the pooling heat between my legs. I didn't want him to know how wet he was making me.
“Are you turned on?” His mouth murmured against my skin.
“W-what?” I stuttered.
“I said, are you turned on?” He repeated.
“No.” I muttered breathlessly.
He pursed his lips, squinting at me. “Are you lying to me?”
I huffed, furrowing my brow. “Why would I lie?”
“Because…” His hand swiftly cupped my sex, pressing my damp panties against my clit. I shuddered out a gasp, gripping his forearms from the sudden sensation. “I think your body says otherwise.”
“That d-doesn’t mean anything.” I squeaked.
He pressed his palm against my clit, rubbing circles. “No? Do you get this wet for everybody? That’s pretty slutty if you ask me.”
My cunt throbbed at his words. “I’m not a slut.”
“I didn’t say you were. I just said that if you get this wet for any guy that grinds against you for two seconds… than you’re slutty. But I don’t think that’s true.” Sam uttered, his eyes gazing into mine.
“It’s not.” I whimpered.
“I know, baby. You’re wet because I made you feel this… good.” His lips grazed my skin as he pressed his body against mine. “Just admit it and I’ll actually touch you.”
My hips bucked against his hand, wanting more. The small circles he rubbed into my aching clit were not enough, and I could feel my pussy soaking my panties more.
I grunted, squeezing his shoulders tight. “Jesus, fine. You turn me on, Sam. Now fucking touch me!”
“Gladly.” He narrowed his eyes at me, yanking my panties down to my knees. Then he slid his hand down to my sex again and began fingering me.
I leaned my head back against the wall, my eyes rolling back in pleasure. His speed wasn’t fast enough, and I needed more than just his fingers. My hands drifted down to his pants, undoing the belt quickly.
“What are you doing? We can’t fuck in here.” He protested, pulling away from my hands.
“Yes we can.” I argued.
“We’ll get caught. Aren’t they gonna come back?” Sam puzzled.
“No. Heather usually just throws couples into every closet and bedroom that’s in this house and ends the game. She never actually times it. So, we can fuck and not get caught.” I informed, yanking him by his belt loops back into me.
“Is that what you want?” He smirked, staring me down.
I nodded my head, unzipping his pants and letting his bulge pop out.
He grabbed my hand, keeping his fingers still inside me. “Say it.”
“Say what?” I choked.
“Say what you want me to do to you.” Sam commanded.
I exhaled deeply. “Why don’t you say it first?”
He sped up his fingers, making me bit my lip hard. “Of course I want to fuck you. You knew that the moment we made eye contact a couple hours ago. But now, I need to hear you say it.”
“You already know what I want.” I whined.
“I don’t know… How can I be sure you want me to fuck you unless you say it?” He slowed his movements down to an almost stop again.
I growled, bucking my hips. “Fuck you.”
“I think one of those words is wrong.” He chuckled darkly.
I stared up at the ceiling as he closed the space, his lips running up my neck.
“Come on baby. Use that pretty mouth for me,” Sam whispered harshly. “Tell me what you want.”
“Sam, just fuck me already.” My breath hitched, the desperation dripping from my voice.
His fingers picked up their pace again, going faster than before. “Is that what you want? You want me to fuck you?”
“Yes, please.” I begged.
“You want me to make you cum around my cock?” As his fingers slid in and out, his thumb began to massage my clit.
I moaned loudly. “Oh my God, yeah!”
“Are you close?” He asked, gazing into my eyes.
“Mm-hmm.” I panted, unable to form words.
He kept his pace until suddenly he slowed his fingers down, pulling them out hastily.
“W-what are you doing?” I stammered.
“I won the bet.” He muttered, his eyes meeting mine.
My heart stopped. “The bet…”
“Yeah. Did you forget about it?” His mouth twitched, a smile almost appearing.
“No, I remember it.” I cleared my throat, wrapping my hands around his waist. “But so what? You were right. You turned me on. And now you get to fuck me. Congratulations.”
“I don’t want to fuck you.” He moved my hands off him.
“That’s a lie.” I let out a short laugh, glancing down at his hard cock.
He licked his lips, zipping his pants back up. “Yeah, it is. Actually, I don’t think you deserve to fuck me.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?” My face dropped, realizing he was serious.
“I’ve had popular girls before, and from personal experience… they aren’t that good,” he smiled smugly. “And even though you are dripping for me, you don’t deserve to cum.”
I scoffed loudly. “Fuck you!”
He shrugged, almost opening the closet door. Then he turned back to me. “Remember next time, be nice to nerds.”
Sam winked at me and brought his hand up to his mouth. He licked his fingertips, my juices still on them. My eyes widened at his action, watching as he tasted me. Then, he quickly grabbed the door handle and left me alone in the closet.
After a minute of catching my breath, I slid my panties back on, ignoring the uncomfortable sensation of the wet fabric.
Oh my God, what if he told people at the party about what happened?
I rushed out of the closet, searching quickly for Heather. She was by the beer pong table, cheering on a group of guys.
“Did Sam say anything?” I asked, tapping her arm as I reached her.
“What?” She responded.
I groaned. “Did Sam say anything when he left the closet?”
“No. He came up to me, said he had to go back to his dorm, and just left. He didn’t even say goodbye to his friends.” She admitted.
I exhaled. “Oh thank God.”
Her eyes scanned my face. “Are you okay? Your face is so red.”
“Um… yeah.” My eyes made contact with Jared across the room, “I just… need to go do something real quick.”
I walked up to him, moving past the girl that he was talking to. “Hey Jared?”
“Yeah?” He questioned.
I pushed my body up against his, pressing my lips to his ear. “I want you to take me upstairs and fuck me.”
He choked on his drink. “What?”
“Take me upstairs and fuck me.” I stated bluntly, glaring into his eyes.
He nodded his head nervously, grabbing my hand. “Uh… sure thing.”

The evening after work was stiff and cold. Everything and everyone seemed to be frozen in their spots as they attempted, with crossed arms, to hold in any form of heat that was manageable during the cold month of January that hit New York like a gust of wind; both literal and figurative. Usually after work I would have gone straight home on severely chilled nights like this, but it was a Thursday. Thursday was therapy day. I was never fond of therapy, though I suppose it did give me someone with an unbiased opinion to talk to, but I just didn’t feel like I got anything out of it which I wasn’t going to blame on my therapist. She was nothing smaller than an angel who was trying to chisel away at the layered cement wall I’d built up around myself.
You know me enough to realize that I'm not the most open person with others. It wasn’t that I didn’t find it appealing--i’m sure it would be beneficial for me to vent to my therapist or anyone willing to listen and get out my emotions instead of seeking out some sort of feeling through my body being sweaty and entangled with a near stranger, but everything felt so routine now. I wasn’t fond of therapy, but I also didn’t want to give it up because it was something I've been doing for years and it was something that i got to jot down on my calendar every other week. I didn’t want to stop seeking out intimacy with strangers because it was what I had been doing for years. Though I didn’t jot it down on a calendar, well, usually i didn’t, but i craved routine I guess you could say. I craved something that let me go through the motions, yet still gave me something to do besides sitting in my home with my thoughts to unravel on themselves.
Though, come to think of it, I hadn’t sought out anyone for sexual purposes at all this week. Seemingly normal to most, but not to me. I’m sure it was just my mind being preoccupied and busy...or maybe I'm finally cured of this ultimate craving for some sort of affection that is absent from my day to day life. The thing that struck me the most was how okay I was with that. I didn’t feel empty, I didn’t feel as though my routine had been thrown off its course or that my life didn’t have some sort of goal or purpose to fulfill. I was okay with it and had never even paid attention to the matter up until this very moment.
I didn’t let my mind get too carried away into this satisfactory feeling--after all, I had places to go.
Thankfully the cozy loft building, that my therapist was located in, was nothing more than a ten minute walk at the very very worst. The cold temperatures were perfect motivation for my legs to get some lightning speed into them as they strolled quickly down the sidewalks that were just beginning to be littered with a light layer of snow. I let out an appropriately volumed sigh as I hung up my scarf and damp hat on the coat rack set just near the door. I was expecting to see Rose, the always smilie receptionist, which I did see, but stood next to her, just on the opposite side of the desk was someone I couldn't even have fathomed I would come in contact in this space.
Neither of us said anything as we stood there, both of us fully knowing, but not quite understanding why we were seeing each other's familiar faces in a space that was usually our own and completely separate from each other’s lives. It nearly felt like one of us had found out an intimate detail about the other, quite by accident.
“Elliot?” My words came out as if I was asking a question--Was this Elliot I was seeing? Was this a familiar face? Of course I knew it was, but my mind was still attempting to fit all the pieces of the puzzle together.
A large puff of air gulped its way down his throat as his prominent Adam's apple nearly popped right out from under the tanned skin of his neck.
“Hi”, was all he managed to say as he stood there, visibly uncomfortable and looking as if I had found out something I wasn’t meant to know about.
“So uh...you see Krista--I-I mean Dr. Gordon?”
At the mention of her name Elliot lifted his eyes to mine, but quickly moved them back to some space he found safe enough to hold zoned out eye contact with.
“Yeah.”
“Oh, uh..cool!”, I spoke with a little too much excitement in my voice for the occasion, but I suppose you could call that a little nervous habit of mine.
It didn’t take Elliot but a millisecond for him to lift the dark fabric onto his head, creating several shadows along his cheeks, nose and chin as he began taking big steps towards the door I had just entered in from.
My body was still standing in the entrance so I knew Elliot would need to either ask me to move, and do so kindly, or I could think ahead and move out of the way for him. I’m sure you could guess which option I went with.
“Can you move.”
“Sure”, I quirked with a rotten grin on my face. Elliot didn’t seem too keen on buying into my teasing manor as he rolled his eyes, but still stood in his place.
“Please.”
“Please what, Elliot?”, I placed special attention to this name as it rolled off of my tongue.
Elliot shook his head, letting a tiny, you’d miss it if you blinked, grin appear before his sadly too familiar frown lines set back into his face.
“Emerson, I'm ready for you.”
I turned my head over my shoulder to see the ever pleasant face of Krista, formally known as Dr. Gordon, but she had always assured me she wanted to be on a first name basis with one another to secure some sort of comfort. I adored her.
I smiled at her as she watched curiously while me and Elliot exchanged body language that was much too uncomfortable for two people to know each other well, but also too familiar for them to be total strangers.
Without a word I moved my body out of the way, keeping my much too happy grin on my face as Elliot shook his head, but his lips were much more relaxed this time. Not a frown, not a grin--somewhere in between. I watched as he pressed his palm on the steel door handle and let his body waltz out into the cold New York night. I too made an effort to move my body in the direction I was meant to be heading in, that is until I heard a very faint, but clear “bye Emerson”.
I turned around quickly, stopping dead in my course to Krista’s office, but all I could make out was Elliot's slim shadow against the lighted sidewalk just outside the once cracked door that was now fully shut. Surely my mind could’ve made it up and that was my very first logical explanation, but there was a tiny voice that also wanted Elliot to have said my name.
Whether it was meant to be heard or just for him, I didn’t care. Though it was a simple and generic mannerism that was taught to toddlers when teaching them “please” “thank you” “hello”, and other friendly exchanges, but a simple goodbye from Elliot seemed like a lot coming from him and it elicited a reaction in me that even Krista took note of.
“Do you two know each other?”
I turned back around to the curious faced woman and  clasped my hands together in my front as I debated on how to reply—because both a yes and no would be truthful answers.
“Sort of”, I shrugged as I walked past Krista and took my normal spot on the couch, but I couldn’t help but feel the warmth beneath me.
My thoughts began to wonder as to why he was sitting on this very same couch, or rather why he needed to seek out a therapist in the first place. I knew not everyone needed a full blown reason to seek therapy. For some it was used as having a person to talk to that was guaranteed to listen and be non biased; everyone needs that. On the other hand, what if he was seeing Krista because he had a problem. Whether that be a past or present problem, I wasn’t too concerned with, I mainly was just curious as to know why.
Maybe Elliot and I weren’t so far apart from one another. We both seemed to share lifestyles that were far from identical, but also the same in the fact that we both wore masks during our day to day lives. Elliot just thought he was good at hiding his and maybe to the rest of the world the mask fit perfectly and succeeded at its job. But I too wore a mask, just a different threading weaved its way into mine.
The saying ‘creative minds think alike’ can also be the same for just about anyone who shared a common personality trait. Crazy minds can also think a like and I could tell that me and Elliot, we were both fucking insane.

Data Recovery (Elliot Alderson x fem!OC)
Pairing: Elliot Alderson x Sophia (OC) Word count: 1.2k Warnings: Weed use, lightest erotica Summary: I dreamt of you again. I’d tell you all about it, but I think you already know. I think you saw me too. Our dreams are synchronized. Or was it the reality? I can’t tell. Good things are usually not real in my life. I’m used to it. After everything, it’s hard to believe for something that wonderful to be real. But I still want it to be. Tell me you’re real. Please. part 1 part 2 part 3 part 4
Tumblr media
I don’t want to exaggerate, but today is the best I have ever felt. In a long time, at least. We bought groceries. Sophia made dinner. Is this reality? Everything else aside, I haven’t eaten homemade food in a long time. And this pasta is
“Is it good?” If this keeps happening, I’ll assume she can read my mind.
“It’s great,” maybe she really can. Who knows anymore? “Thanks.”
Mr. Robot is gone. I guess I managed to get rid of him. It’s better this way. I don’t want him here. Especially when…
About that.
“So, how exactly are you going to prove me it’s real?”
She puts her fork to the side. Her eyes linger on me for a moment.
“I—” she struggles with words. “I don’t exactly have a plan.”
Of course.
“Was it all just to prevent me from kicking you out?”
“Well, it worked, didn’t it?”
I mean... how do you call this? Sure. Great matters call for great measures. Or she is actually insane. She smiles, but the corners of her lips drop quickly when she sees my reaction.
“Listen,” she leans in and covers my hand. It twitches, but I don’t move it away. Her palm is warm. “This isn’t exactly a scientific matter. There is no technical way to prove what I’m saying. But, whatever this is, I can feel it. Every time we get closer, it intensifies. So, to check it, we need—”
“—to get close.”
“Yeah.”
“Like sex?”
Sophia tenses up and jerks her hand back. Did I take it too far?
“I—I was thinking more like sleeping in the same bed, but… yeah. Like sex.”
It got awkward. Did I make it awkward? I should probably clarify.
“If you don’t—”
“I do! I do.” Sophia lowers her gaze. She’s nervous. That makes two of us. I feel like I’m thirteen. “It’s just—you weren’t really in the mood for it then, so I—I didn’t think I should mention it. But—” she sighs and looks back at me. “I want it. And if you want it too – we can—you know—make it happen.”
Way to make it even more awkward. It’s good she removed her hand from mine. My heart is beating so fast I think every part of my body would give it away.
“Do you want to get high?”
She smiles in relief.
“Yes. Please.”
I know what you’re going to ask. Where’s my skepticism? It’s still here. Don’t worry. It’s just—it gets exhausting, okay? Easy for you to have an opinion, you’re an observer. I am the one to make decisions. I can’t trust Mr. Robot to do it, he’ll ruin everything. And at this point, dragging anyone else into this would be pointless. Stupid even. I really want this to work. I am more and more sure that Sophia isn’t lying to me or exploiting my trust. She’s just lonely. And I’m well aware of how it feels. Sitting with her, smoking, talking about nonsense, it’s nice. It’s nice to not be alone, not to be occupied with world-changing stuff or revolution planning for change. It’s nice to feel normal. It’s not permanent, nor is it long-lasting. I’m sure the Dark Army will come back. But until then… I am allowed to enjoy myself. Right?
“Wow, I haven’t done that stuff since college,” she says, coughing out the smoke.
“ Really?” I ask, taking the joint from her. “How did you survive?”
“Meds, mostly.”
“Well, it’s never too late to incorporate weed into your diet.”
“What would that be, herbal therapy?”
“Exactly.”
I make a deep puff and offer the joint to Sophia, but she smiles and shakes her head. She’s probably high already, considering the last time she smoked was like seven years ago, if not earlier. My head’s getting lighter. I take my time to examine her. She sits on the couch, her head thrown back, relaxed smile on her face. She’s so beautiful. I feel happy from her I’m doing that thing again, I know. Throwing myself onto the person the second they start acting nice towards me. But it’ so hard not to do around her. She’s magnetizing. The way she smiles, the way she sits, the way she breathes. I want to hold her.
She looks very tired, even on weed. Whatever it is on her mind, it must be exhausting. I get it. I wonder what she is thinking about. She turns her head and looks at me. I see the entire galaxy in her eyes. The way it shifts, the way it shines. It’s that sound again. The—
“Wind chimes,” she says quietly, staring into my eyes. I feel a lump in my throat. I silently nod in reply. I think if I say anything, I’ll start crying. Last time I allowed that sound to take over me, I felt out of this world. I don’t want to block it anymore. When I look into her eyes, I have this strong feeling, like I’m seeing several people at once. They all connect within her irises, merging together. My breath starts trembling the longer I maintain eye contact with her.
“I want you to be right,” I can’t speak any louder than a whisper. It’s because of weed. Or her. “I want this to be true.”
Her hand is so close to mine, I can feel its warmth. I long for it. It’s magnetizing. Sophia glances down. Our fingers touch. I can almost see the smallest bolts of lightning between our finger pads.
“So—” I stop myself, memories flashing through my mind. It’s about her. It’s all about her.
The sofa screaks. Her face is inches from mine. Have you ever anticipated a thing that hard? I can’t remember I have. My heart is pounding. In any other case, I would be a little worried.
Blossoming flowers.
Blue waves.
Icy road.
Machine guns.
Popcorn.
Woodpecker.
This dress looks so good on you.
You don’t deserve this life.
I don’t want to ruin what we have.
Who is it? Me? Or them? Are we the same? Your face is so familiar. How long have we known each other? Is it months? Years? Decades? Do you remember doing all this? Why is it when I look at you, I feel at home? Do you feel it? Are we still here? Can you still hear the cars? Or are they gone? Are we gone? Is the place changing? Or are we? Am I asleep? Recently, I dreamt of you again.
Please.
Sophie.
“Sophie.”
“Elliot.”
The way you say my name. The way your hand touches my mine. Your lips are warm against my skin, soft. Your breath is at my neck. I want you. I need you.
“Be with me.” I can’t tell what I’m thinking and what I’m saying out loud anymore.
“I am. I’m here. I’m here, Elliot.”
I want to feel your body, I want you to be closer, closer, closer.
“I’ve missed you, Elliot.”
“I’ve missed you too.”
I remember, I remember so much. It’s overwhelming. Why do I feel like I’ve waited years for this? Because I did? Touching you, kissing you, being inside you. Loving you. You. It’s always been you.
Sophie.

Warnings: Really long post, mentions of kidnapping, death, and cursing.

Run Boy Run
~ * ~
"During extreme weather conditions, a climber must possess the wisdom to determine..." the recorded voice of Herr Carlson filled the air.
A bell rang, signaling it was time for breakfast.
"…When evacuation is inevitable."
The seven Hargreeves children gathered and stood around the table, respectfully waiting for Sir Reginald Hargreeves.
"A controlled alpine descent begins with the girding of one's loins and the anchoring of the climbing rope to one's enemy, the mountain. The Dülfersitz rappel is the preferred method for descent when rope is the only available tool, but must be regarded as a last resort. Begin by looping the rope…"
Sir Reginald came in. "Sit."
Everyone assumed their seats and began eating as Herr Carlson continued talking.
"A screen anchor must be used if the rope is to be successfully retrieved from the face of the mountain. Tightly knot the ends of the rope. Once anchored, thread the doubled rope through the legs, front to back, and around the buttocks. It is of utmost importance that the rope be drawn under the gluteal muscles, not through the crevice between the gluteus. Proceed by holding the rope diagonally…"
Five, fed up with the prospect of being denied his abilities, aggressively stabbed his butter knife into the table. That caused everyone to look at him.
"Number Five?" Sir Reginald passively acknowledged the boy.
"I have a question," Five almost bit out.
"Knowledge is an admirable goal, but you know the rules. No talking during mealtimes. You are interrupting Herr Carlson," Reginald dismissed him as the record continued playing.
"I want to time travel," Five continued relentlessly, shoving his plate aside.
"No."
"But I'm ready. I've been practicing my spatial jumps, just like you said," Five pushed back from the table and stood up. He blinked from his seat to Sir Reginald's side. "See?"
However, Sir Reginald remained unfazed. "A spatial jump is trivial when compared with the unknowns of time travel. One is like sliding along the ice, the other is akin to descending blindly into the depths of the freezing water and reappearing as an acorn."
"Well, I don't get it," Five retorted coldly.
"Hence the reason you're not ready," Sir Reginald pointed out.
He glanced at Vanya, who shook her head at him. But he didn't care.
"I'm not afraid," he pushed on.
"Fear isn't the issue. The effects it might have on your body, even on your mind, are far too unpredictable. Now, I forbid you to talk about this anymore," Sir Reginald ordered.
Five was frustrated and angry now. He KNEW he could do it. Screw Sir Reginald! He was SO over it.
And with that, Five stormed out.
"Number Five! You haven't been excused! Come back here!" Sir Reginald called after him.
Five slammed the front door shut and shoved the gates open, starting to storm down the sidewalk. He looked around before jumping through time. Instantly, his surroundings became more vibrant and warm. It felt like summer to him.
"Not ready my ass," Five sneered before he jumped again.
This time, his surroundings became more blue and cold. It was definitely wintertime. He jumped once more, though this time he landed himself in a time and place he never imagined.
He halted in his steps, looking around in horror at the fire and rubble. He looked around in shock, wondering what he did. He started running back to where the remains of his home once stood.
"Vanya! Ben! Dad! Anyone!" Five called out desperately. He clenched his fists and tried to jump back in time, but his power failed and all that he was able to conjure were weak orbs of blue light. "Come on! Shit!" he cried.
He looked around hopelessly, falling to his knees in grief and regret.
~ * ~
Five years.
It's been FIVE years since Karina Valor was kidnapped from boarding school and forced to work at The Commission in their briefcase division. She was only doing this for her mother. She was only doing this for the one person in the world whom she loved and had left to hold onto.
Karina despised The Handler. She hated that The Handler not only stole her from her life, she manipulated and forced her into another life she never asked for. The Handler heard of her amazing intelligence in the world of technology and wanted to recruit her. But, when Karina never gave a clear answer, The Handler took things into her own hands. She decided to make the young girl see and understand what she was in store for.
Karina fell asleep in her dorm room and woke up in a hotel room that could pass for a historic museum. And that was when her life began to actually fall apart. Faced with accepting a contract in order to protect and save her mother, or being stranded in a timeline not her own, she grudgingly signed her ten years away. Not like she was given a fair choice.
However, The Handler seriously underestimated her. Karina found out she was put in the perfect division for her technology skills. She would work hard all day and play strategically at night: building her own personal briefcase to send her home.
After her eighteenth birthday had passed, she jumped out at the first opportunity. Little did she know of her calculation error that landed her ten days after March 24th, 2019. She landed in a complete and utter wasteland. A world destroyed and shown no mercy to whoever inhabited it. Worst of all, her briefcase had a malfunction and didn't have enough power to help her escape.
"Oh my God, what have I done? No! No no no! No! NO!" Karina screamed as she raced around. "No! Mom! Mom! Mother! Mamma!" she cried out for her. "Anyone, answer me, PLEASE!"
In a hysteric fit, she ran around trying to find a survivor.
She barely recognized her hometown. Nor did she know if she was even IN her hometown. Once she stumbled upon her beloved bookstore, she noticed the familiar hand beneath a slab of broken concrete. Though beads were missing, Karina couldn't mistaken the unique sage, brown, and ivory bracelet her mom always wore. She looked a little further to see her dead mother's face peeking out from underneath.
The cruel realization that her home and her mother were gone, sent her to her knees. She screamed and cried, wishing she had just stayed at The Commission.
Her mistake cost her her entire world.
About a block down the road, eighteen year old Five Hargreeves finished packing up the red wagon he used for luggage so he could set out for someplace better to live. His head shot up when he heard the distant sound of screams and sobs. He looked at his companion, Delores.
"Did you hear that, Delores?" he asked the mannequin with a frown.
Delores was quiet, of course.
"How can you be so sure? There's NO way someone else could have survived this shit," he continued in disbelief.
Another scream that was filled with so much pain and agony pierced the air, making Five feel desperate now. He didn't want to think he was hearing things. Delores had been a faithful friend, but he craved human contact that were more than just dead bodies.
Five began walking to the source of the commotion. He got closer, shocked to the core to see a girl around his age having a complete and utter breakdown. He felt bad for her.
"Who are you?" Five spoke up once he tentatively reached the stranger.
Karina jumped and picked up a random rock, about to throw it at him. "Who are you?! What do you want from me?!"
"Hey! Whoa! Put that down! I'm not going to hurt you unless you throw that at me. Then we're going to have a major problem," he remarked.
"I asked you a question. Who are you?" Karina was shaking now, fearful that The Commission had come after her.
"Calm down, I'm not here to hurt you. I'm Five Hargreeves. That being said, will you please put that down?"
She frowned from his odd name, but nevertheless she dropped the rock.
"Thanks. Now, I asked YOU a question. Granted the same one."
Karina swallowed hard. She wasn't ready for him to find out. After all, she just met the boy. The oddly familiar, yet tragically handsome boy.
"Hargreeves…? Wait. I recognize the surname. Y-You're with the Umbrella Academy," Karina slightly stammered out.
Five's eyes widened. "You know about us? How?"
"I was born a few months before you all. I grew up hearing about the Academy."
"I see. Nice to know that you know me. That being said, I still don't know who YOU are."
"Sorry. Um…I'm Karina Valor…" she drew out.
"Karina? Pretty name. How long have you been here?" he wanted to know.
She glanced around, biting her lip.
"If you're afraid I'll tell someone, rest assured that won't happen. Only other person here is Delores, but she is fantastic at keeping secrets," Five told her.
"Delores…?" Karina frowned.
Five pointed to the mannequin and Karina just pursed her lips. She nodded, wondering how long HE had been stuck here.
"Okay. Um…nice to meet you, Delores."
Five faintly smiled. "Now that we are all acquainted, how exactly did you get here?"
Karina released a slow breath and decided it was best to just start from the beginning. Little did they both know just how much they had in common until they were both spilling their life stories.
~ * ~
Present Day
"We survived on scraps. Canned food, cockroaches, anything we could find," Five finished their story. He chuckled bitterly.
"You know that rumor that Twinkies have an endless shelf life?" Karina spoke.
"Well, it's total bullshit," Five scoffed.
"I can't even imagine," Vanya softly returned.
"You do whatever it takes to survive, or you die. So we adapted. Whatever the world threw at us, we found a way to overcome it. Even got married after ten years of…being a couple," Five continued.
"Married in the apocalypse?" Vanya echoed.
Karina lifted a shoulder. "Five found some rings, we exchanged some made up vows, and sealed it with a kiss."
"You got anything stronger?" Five acknowledged the cup of coffee in his hand that Vanya gave him.
Karina eyed him sideways, but she rolled her eyes. Vanya got up and started pouring some glasses of whiskey before giving them to the couple. She was watching them, rather speechless. Five noticed, huffing out a breath.
"You think we're crazy," Five remarked.
"No," she stammered. "It's just…it's a lot to take in."
"Exactly what don't you understand?" Five tightly questioned, causing Karina to nudge him with a warning look.
"Why didn't you just time travel back?" Vanya wanted to know.
Five scoffed, blowing out a breath in exasperation. "Ooh, gee, wish I'd thought of that. Time travel is a crapshoot. I went into the ice and never acorn-ed. You think I didn't try everything to get back to my family and try everything to get Rina back to her mother?"
"If you both grew old there, you know, in the apocalypse, how come you two still look like kids?" Vanya questioned.
"I told you already," Five scoffed and stalked past Vanya to the bottle of liquor. "I must have got the equations wrong." He shot Karina an apologetic glance.
"I mean, Dad always used to say that…" Vanya began as he poured himself another drink. "…Time travel could mess up your mind. Well, maybe that's what's happening?" she tentatively spoke as he took a sip.
Five shook his head. "This was a mistake." He set down the glass and walked past Vanya to grab his blazer. "You're too young…too naive to understand," he talked over his sister.
"No. Five…" Vanya called after him.
"Five, wait," Karina spoke up, gently placing her hand on his shoulder before he opened the door. He stopped when he felt her presence and turned to face Vanya as she continued to talk.
"I haven't seen you in a long time, and I don't want to lose you again. And, honestly, I'd love to get to know my sister-in-law a little more," she told them. "That's all. And you know what, it's getting late, and…I have lessons early, and I need to sleep, and I'm sure you both do, too. Here. I can take the couch and you both can have the bed," she adjusted the pillow and blanket on the couch. "If you two need any snacks or a shower, feel free to get one whenever you want. We'll talk in the morning again. Okay? I promise. Night." She went past the couple to grab her things and prep the bed.
"Night," Five returned, glancing at Karina reassuringly.
Once Vanya cleared her bed, the two of them went in and tried to settle down for the night. Five was perched on the edge, looking at the eyeball thoughtfully.
"The eye again?" Karina sighed.
He looked up at her. "It's the first clue as to how to stop the apocalypse, Rina."
"I know, but you heard what Vanya said. You need sleep."
"I need answers."
"You aren't going to be of much help to yourself if you're exhausted."
Five sighed in frustration. "I know that."
"Knowing is not the same as doing," Karina remarked before she slipped into bed, turning so that her back faced him.
Five winced slightly from the motion.
Ouch he thought, but he knew deep down he probably deserved it.
He sighed and eventually put the eyeball away. He looked back to see that Karina was already asleep, which relieved him. He was glad she was getting the rest she needed. He eyed a pen and pad of paper on the bedside table and grabbed it, scribbling a note down for her to find when she woke up.
Five got up, tucking the blanket over Karina a bit more.
"See you in the morning, Rina," he kissed her forehead and quietly left the room.
Vanya was in the bathroom, giving Five the luxury of easily slipping out without being noticed.
~ * ~
The next morning, Karina woke up to an empty bed. Though she could say she was used to it in a way. She sighed, rubbing her eyes and glancing over at the clock to see the time. What she didn't expect was a written note. She snatched it and read it before she loudly groaned.
"Good Lord, Five, why are you like this?" she got up and quickly made the bed.
Breakfast would have to wait. Karina quickly grabbed a shower before she quietly ducked out, since Vanya was still asleep on the couch.
Karina rushed off to the prosthetics building and found Five waiting in the lobby, looking fresh in yet another uniform.
"I see you got my note," he spoke as she walked over.
"Yeah, well, the empty bed gave me enough of an idea," she remarked.
"Sorry. I'll sleep better after knowing we'll solve this," he returned.
He looked around impatiently before a doctor, Lance Biggs, came out and looked at them in confusion.
"Uh, can I help you two?" he paused, wondering why two teenagers were in his lobby.
Five turned around. "I need to know who this belongs to," he held up the eyeball and strolled over to him.
"Where did you get that?" Lance wanted to know.
"What do you care?" Five scoffed and Karina cleared her throat at him, seeing the almost disturbed look Lance was giving him. "I…I found it…at a playground, actually. Uh, must have just…" Five clicked tongue dramatically. "…Popped out." He smirked.
"He wants return it to its rightful owner," Karina added sweetly, stroking the back of Five's neck which he found rather soothing.
"Oh…what a thoughtful young man he is," the receptionist cooed.
"Yeah. Look up the name for me, will ya?" Five glanced at her.
"Uh, I'm sorry, but patient records are strictly confidential. That means I can't tell you…" Lance began.
"Yeah, I know what it means," Five cut him off.
"But I'll tell you what I can do. I will take the eye off your hands and return it to the owner. I'm sure he or she will be very grateful, so if I can just…" Lance pointed to it.
"Yeah, you're not touching this eye," Five hissed dangerously.
Here we go Karina thought.
"Now, you listen here, young man…" Lance started but Five aggressively grabbed him by the lapels of his coat and pulled him down to his level. Lance grunted.
"No! You listen to me, asshоlе," Five bit out through clenched teeth. "I've come a long way for this, through some shit your pea brain couldn't even comprehend, so just give me the information I need, and I'll be on my merry way. And if you call me "young man" one more time, I'm gonna put your head through that damn wall."
"Oh, dear," both Karina and the receptionist cringed.
"Call security," Lance loudly whispered to the receptionist.
"Yeah," she softly returned, quickly dialing on the phone.
Five glared at her and at Lance before roughly releasing him. He rolled his eyes and walked off.
"So sorry about that…" Karina apologized to them before hurrying after Five.
~ * ~
Vanya was still on the search for Five and quite frankly Karina as well after they left her apartment without notice, so she decided to see if they were at the Academy.
"Five? Karina?" Vanya called out. "Are you two upstairs?" She climbed the staircase and headed down the hall. "Five?" she tried again. She sighed when she got to the door and saw them. "Oh, thank God. I was worried sick about you both."
Karina was laying on the bed and Five was staring out the window.
"Sorry we left without saying goodbye," Five turned to face his sister.
"No, look, I'm the one that should be sorry. Yeah, I was dismissive, and…I…I guess I didn't know how to process what you both were saying," Vanya stepped into the room as he walked over to her. "And I still can't, to be honest."
"Maybe you were right to be dismissive," Five told her before he scoffed and sat down next to Karina. "Maybe it wasn't real after all. It felt real." He sighed. "Well…like you said, the old man did say time travel could contaminate the mind."
"Then maybe I'm not the right person for you to be talking to," Vanya returned. "Look, I used to see someone. A therapist. I could give you her information. Maybe you and Karina could see her."
"Thanks, but…I think we're just gonna get some rest," Five sighed. "It's been a long time since I've had a good sleep and I know Rina's tired of an empty bed." He glanced at her and she softly smiled in return.
"Okay," Vanya sighed and left the room.
Karina sat up as Five went over to check and make sure Vanya was gone.
From within the wardrobe, a few items clattered and Klaus suddenly stumbled out. "That's so…" He gasped. "…Touching, all that stuff about family and Dad and time and your little wifey. Wow!" He strolled into the room.
"Would you shut up? She'll hear you!" Five hissed.
"I'm moist," Klaus announced unceremoniously, causing Karina to sigh heavily.
"I told you to put on something professional," Five acknowledged Klaus's wacky choice of clothing.
"What? This is my nicest outfit," Klaus defended himself.
Five sighed in exasperation, shaking his head. "We'll raid the old man's closet." He went to help Karina to her feet and left the room with her in tow.
"Whatever. As long as I get paid," Klaus followed the pair out.
"When the job is done," Five retorted.
"Okay, but just so we're clear on the finer details," Klaus began, making Five and Karina turn to look at him. "I just gotta go into this place and pretend to be your dear old dad, correct? And Karina is your…little girlfriend?"
"Yeah. Something like that," Karina shrugged, causing Five to look at her with a scrunched up face. "Don't give me that. Saying we're married would just raise more questions, doll."
"What's our cover story?" Klaus eagerly wanted to know.
"What?" Karina eyed him.
"What are you talking about?" Five really didn't like where this was headed, knowing his brother's taste for theatrics.
"I mean, was I really young when I had you? Like, 16? Like, young and…terribly misguided?" Klaus began to ramble.
"Sure," Five feigned an eye roll.
"Your mother, that slսt," Klaus continued. "Whoever she was. We met at…the disco." Klaus chuckled and the couple slowly nodded. "Okay? Remember that." Klaus snapped his fingers. "Oh, my God, the sеx was amazing."
"What a disturbing glimpse into that thing you call a brain," Five cut in, tucking Karina's hand into the crook of his arm and leading her off.
"Don't make me put you in time-out! I haven't even started on Karina yet!" Klaus chased after them.
"Please don't!" both of them told him in unison.

All thanks to adult supervision, Five actually made it into Lance's office this time. Klaus and Karina were sitting across from Lance. Five was standing up, about ready to throw hands.
"Like I said to your son earlier, any information about the prosthetics we build is strictly confidential. Without the client's consent, I simply can't help you," Lance finished explaining.
"Well, we can't get consent if you don't give us a name," Five seethed in frustration.
"Well, that's not my problem. Sorry. Now, there's really nothing more I can do, so…" Lance was about to continue but Klaus glanced around.
"And what about my consent?" Klaus interrupted him.
"Excuse me?" Lance blinked.
"Who gave you permission…" Klaus started to fake cry, causing Five to look at him in confusion. "…To lay your hands…on my son and his girlfriend?" Klaus pointed at Five and Karina.
"What?" Lance, Five, and Karina questioned in unison.
"You heard me," Klaus remarked.
"I didn't touch your son or his girlfriend," Lance cautiously told him.
"Oh, really? Well, then how did he get that swollen lip, then, and how did she get that bruise on her cheek?" Klaus continued.
"He doesn't have a swollen-" Lance didn't get to finish before Klaus got up and hit Five across the face.
Five grunted and Klaus gave Karina an apologetic glance before slapping her. She yelped as Lance jumped and inhaled sharply.
"I want it. Name, please. Now," Klaus leaned towards Lance. Five and Karina were holding their faces, shooting glares at the séance.
"You're crazy," Lance commented.
Klaus chuckled. "You got no idea." He eyed a snow globe on his desk and picked it up. "'Peace on Earth'. That's so sweet!" He suddenly smashed the snow globe onto his forehead, making Lance jump in shock as Five and Karina leapt back, staring at him in confused horror. Klaus groaned. "God, that hurt!" he yelled.
"I'm calling secur-" Lance swept the phone up, but Klaus seized it from him with a grunt. "What are you doing?" Lance demanded.
"There's been an assault…in Mr. Bigg's office, and we need security, now. Schnell!" Klaus mockingly demanded before slamming down the receiver. He groaned painfully. "Now, here's what's gonna happen, Grant."
"It's…Lance."
"In about 60 seconds, two security guards are gonna burst through that door, and they're gonna see a whole lot of blood, and they're gonna wonder, "What the hell happened?" And we're gonna tell them that you…" Klaus began to whimper, "Beat the shit out of us." He sobbed dramatically, and then sighed, grinning. "You're gonna do great in prison, Grant. Trust me, I've been there. Little piece of chicken like you. Oh, my God, you're gonna get passed around like a-" He cleared his throat. "You're just…You're gonna do great. That's all I'm saying."
"Jesus, you are a real sick bastard," Lance drew out.
"Thank you," Klaus spit out a shard of glass, which clinked when it landed on the floor.
Five smirked triumphantly and Karina just held back an eye roll, wanting nothing more than a pack of ice for her still stinging cheek. For a guy like Klaus, she was shocked from how hard he could hit.
The three followed Lance to a file cabinet and he started to shift through the folders, pulling one out.
"Oh, that's strange," Lance frowned.
"What?" Five questioned.
"Uh, the eye. It hasn't been purchased by a client yet," Lance replied as Klaus jumped down to his side.
"What? What do you mean?" Klaus wanted to know.
"Well, uh, our logs say that the eye with that serial number…this can't be right. It hasn't even been manufactured yet," Lance looked up at Five in confusion. "Where did you get that eye?"
Five shook his head in resignation and soon the three were leaving the building.
"Well, this is not good," Five sighed.
"I was pretty good, though, right? 'Yeah. What about my consent, bitch?'" Klaus boasted with a chuckle.
"Klaus, it doesn't matter," Karina felt like she was about to experience a massive headache.
"What? What? What's the big deal with this eye, anyway?" Klaus waved it off.
"There is someone out there who's going to lose an eye in the next seven days. They're gonna bring about the end of life on this Earth as we know it," Five walked past him, taking Karina with him.
"Yeah, can I get that 20 bucks, like, now, or what?" Klaus turned to watch them.
"Your 20 bucks?" Five looked at him incredulously.
"Yeah, my 20 bucks."
"The apocalypse is coming, and all you can think about is getting high?" Five ranted.
"Well, I'm also quite hungry. Tummy's a-rumblin'," he imitated a stomach growl.
Five shook his head in disbelief. "You're useless. You're all useless!" He eyed Karina immediately. "Not you, by the way."
She just flashed him a scrunched up, slightly sarcastic smile as Five went to sit down on the steps.
"Oh, come on. You need to lighten up, old man," Klaus paused, before he suddenly realized something. "Hey, you know, I've just now realized why you're so uptight. You must be hоrny as hell!" He laughed, plopping down next to the couple. "All those years, just the two of you. It's gotta screw with your heads! Speaking of screw! Have you two ever…?"
"Continue that question and I'll make sure that snow globe wasn't the only thing smashed over your head," Karina threatened casually, causing Klaus to scoot away from her.
"Feisty little girl. How long have you two…been a thing?"
"We've been together for over 30 years," Five softly smiled.
"Thirty years? Oh, wow!" Klaus chuckled. "God, the longest I've been with someone was…I don't know, three weeks. And that's only because I was so tired of looking for a place to sleep."
Whilst Klaus was rambling, Five took Karina's hand into his arm and blinked the two out of there.
"He did make the most fantastic osso buco, though. It was…" Klaus turned to see that he was alone. "Five? Karina?"
The couple reappeared in the back of a driving taxi and the poor driver jumped with a gasp.
"Don't stop. Just keep going," Five told him as he drove past where Klaus was.
Klaus saw them and shot to his feet. "Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, what about my money?" he shouted as Five waved to him.
~ * ~
The day got much worse. It was just another night. And there was just another shoot out in which Five barely made it out alive. This time he got caught at a department store.
The Academy was almost as dark as it was outside as Five quietly made his way up the stairs. First an apocalypse to stop, now two of the best assassins were after him and he nearly got himself killed trying to rescue a friend from a store. When would it ever end?
Allison and Luther were deep in discussion when they saw their brother make his way up the stairs.
"Five? What the hell happened to you?" Allison became worried when she saw his rather depressing expression.
"Are you okay? Can we help?" Luther reached out for him, but Five coldly caught his hand.
"There's nothing you can do. There's nothing any of you can do," Five retorted, looking up at them solemnly. "Where's Rina?"
"She's asleep in your room. She was awake not too long ago, but she said she got tired of waiting for you," Allison responded softly.
Five just nodded, continuing on his way. He went upstairs and slipped into his room, looming over the horrible memories of seeing his siblings dead amidst the rubble of the apocalypse.
He sank down on the bed where Karina was peacefully asleep and he gazed down at her, gently brushing some hair out of her face.
"Hazel and Cha-Cha found me. But I won't let them get to you. I swear," he quietly told her.
He sat next to her, mindlessly playing with her hair as he once more sank into the memories of him running around, finding the bodies of his family.

Meet The Family
~ * ~
On the 12th hour of the first day of October 1989, 16 women around the world gave birth. This was unusual only in the fact that none of these women had been pregnant when the day first began. Sir Reginald Hargreeves, eccentric billionaire and adventurer, resolved to locate and adopt as many of the children as possible.
He got seven of them.
~ * ~
April 2, 2019
The Umbrella Academy were all staring at Sir Reginald Hargreeves.
"'Home'?" Sir Reginald repeated. "This isn't your home."
Allison was taken back. "What are you talking about? This is the Umbrella Academy."
"Wrong again," Sir Reginald remarked. "This…is the Sparrow Academy."
From behind them, footsteps approached and they turned around. Three women and two men all dressed in red uniforms, along with a floating cube, appeared on the landing above.
Down below, Ben Hargreeves himself made his way in, to their shock. He stared at the newcomers coldly and angrily.
"Dad, who the hell are these assholes?" he demanded.
"Shit," the Umbrella Academy collectively cursed.
"Ben," Klaus shakily drew out.
Luther stepped forward. "Is that really you?"
"And who are the weirdos on the balcony?" Diego shouted.
"They are the Sparrows. My children," Sir Reginald replied.
Energy rumbled from around, shaking the room some.
"I'm sorry. What do you mean, your children?" Five questioned suspiciously. "That's not possible, old man."
"Of course it is! I think I'd know, wouldn't I?" Sir Reginald remarked.
"Everybody else can see Ben, right?" Klaus asked as the rest of the Sparrows came downstairs.
"Cute hat, Sundance," Ben mocked him.
"They call themselves the Umbrella Academy, a group of scheming, perfidious malcontents who accosted me in the fall of 1963 when I was away on business in Dallas," Sir Reginald continued as Five and Karina eyed the briefcase still in the entry hall. "Be warned, they claim to be my spawn."
"Claim?" Allison scoffed. "Look, Five, what the hell is going on?"
"I don't know yet, but it's concerning," Five admitted.
"Is he telling the truth?" Marcus Hargreeves asked.
"Not the part about us being perfidious," Vanya replied.
"No, we're amateur-fidious, at best," Klaus cut in.
"But we are his children. Well, we are. She's his daughter-in-law," Vanya acknowledged Karina. "This is our house," she continued.
"Yeah, yeah. We, uh…we grew up here," Luther put in.
"'Yeah, we grew up here'," Alphonse Hargreeves mocked him, causing the Sparrow Academy members to snicker.
"I kind of think we would have noticed you," Sloane Hargreeves pointed out.
Luther stared at her in awe. "Hi. I'm Luther."
Sloane gave a small smile in return.
"Okay. None of you belong here," Allison shot.
"Oh! Well, then. I guess we'll just pack our bags and move out," Fei Hargreeves shot back.
Christopher the Cube spoke, which just sounded like a bunch of warbling growls. All the Sparrows chuckled.
"You slay me, Chris," Ben was still glaring at the Umbrella Academy.
Soon, Grace came in looking a bit panicked. She had a plate of cookies in her hands as everyone looked at her.
"I wasn't expecting company," she rambled with a huff. "This is the best I could do on short-" She glitched a bit. "Short…Short notice," her voice became robotic.
"Mom," Diego whispered when he saw her.
"Mom? She's a robot, you perv," Jayme Hargreeves nearly scoffed.
"It's not a robot," Diego muttered.
"Hey, don't you call him that!" Luther turned to her.
"Or what?" Ben challenged.
"Come closer and find out."
"Luther! Guys, chill!" Vanya spoke up.
"Think I'm afraid?" Ben questioned.
"Stand down, Ben," Marcus warned him.
"Look at that! She's got a voice!" Luther acknowledged Jayme.
"How about I hide that big Rubik's Cube up your ass?" Diego shot.
Everyone began bickering now.
"Enough!" Marcus yelled right as Jayme hissed and spit at Diego.
Diego suddenly got sucked into his head and Karina noticed. She nudged Diego, but he didn't budge. He seemed to be caught up in a trance, breathing heavier and sweating some. Karina glanced coldly at Jayme, who merely just blew her a kiss and a wink.
"Diego?" Karina muttered before he slowly came back around with a soft gasp. He looked at Jayme and she nodded with her eyes huge.
He quickly tried to wipe his face where Jayme's spit landed on him.
"You got 30 seconds to get out of our house," Marcus instructed.
"And if we don't?" Allison wanted to know.
"Then we'll have to settle this the old-fashioned way."
"Look, we just fought a literal army. Okay?" Vanya tried to be civil. "This doesn't need to get ugly. Let's all just calm down, and let's talk."
"Psst," Klaus whispered to Ben. "Ben-er-ino."
Ben turned to look at him judgmentally.
"You look so much better alive than you do dead. Am I right?" Klaus continued, causing the Sparrows to look at him in confusion. "Except that haircut."
"What the hell did you just say?" Ben demanded.
"Klaus, that may not be the best idea," Karina warned him.
"Come on, come on. Stop with all the hostility, Mr. Grumpy Pants," Klaus waved Ben off dismissively, going over to him. "Oh wow. Nice scar. Muy macho."
"Shut your mouth!" Ben snapped.
"You shut your mouth and just hug your brother-" Klaus threw his arms out before Ben punched him.
Klaus grunted, falling back and stumbling over his feet, tripping into the table and flailing as he rolled over it.
"Hey! What the hell? You didn't have to do that!" Luther defended his brother.
"Oh, I'm pretty sure I did!" Ben remarked.
"He did," Alphonse agreed with a nod.
"Hey! Get back!" Marcus ordered.
"Luther, hey!" Vanya shouted.
Marcus shoved Luther back and Luther swung at him. Marcus ducked, kicking Luther and sending him flying through the air. He collided with Klaus and the two crashed to the ground. The fight was on. The Sparrows went after the Umbrellas.
Five blinked over to Ben as Karina slid under, ducking to avoid a tentacle. Five started to fight as Ben alternated between the two. Ben punched Five in the side, making him shout as Karina kicked Ben back. Ben whipped around and punched her, but she caught his fist and punched him back. Ben twisted her around, wrapping his arm around her neck, but she bit his arm hard as Five blinked over and punched him. Ben yelled, releasing Karina as she shoved him away from her. Five grabbed her and blinked away.
"That's all you got?" Ben challenged as Five and Karina stumbled back.
"You're alive. That's…great," Five was breathless.
"Or possibly horrible. We're not really sure yet," Karina dove away from a tentacle.
"Is that some kind of weird smack talk?" Ben scoffed.
"It's more of an existential problem, really, Ben," Five remarked.
"Awesome. Well, here's your next problem!" Ben shot a tentacle out, grabbing Karina before she could dodge it.
"Rina!" Five shouted as he watched her sail through the air, but Ben attacked him again before he could rescue her.
Karina went crashing into the landing upstairs, thudding to the floor with a grunt. She groaned in pain, slowly getting to her feet. She barely blocked a punch from Jayme.
"Oh, you again," Jayme grabbed Karina's wrist when she was about to strike and punched her in the stomach.
"I could say the same about you," Karina dodged a kick, sweeping beneath Jayme and knocking her off her feet.
"Feisty little girl, aren't you?"
"Wouldn't exactly use that term since all you seem to be is an overly aggressive llama!"
Jayme growled, throwing Karina off of her. She tackled her to the ground. The two wrestled around a bit before Karina punched Jayme, knocking her off of her.
"What did you do to Diego earlier?" Karina questioned, punching Jayme again before she could get up.
"Would you like to know?" Jayme spit on her, letting the hallucination-inducing saliva sink into Karina's head.
Karina suddenly inhaled, looking around as the fight began to disappear around her.
"Hello? What's going on?" Karina called out, noticing that she was alone.
She slowly got to her feet as a figure began to appear in the distance.
"Karina, my love bug? Is that you?" the weak, faint voice of a woman sounded.
Karina inhaled softly. "Mom?" she glanced around.
"Karina!" the figure took form of her mother. She was on the ground, badly beaten and bruised.
"Mom, no!" Karina rushed to her side.
"Karina, sweetheart, what are you doing here? Go! It isn't safe!"
"I'm not leaving without you!"
"You should listen to your mother, little girl," the terrifying voice of her mother's ex-boyfriend taunted.
"No. No no no…" she whipped around and screamed when he lunged at her. "No! Mom, run! Get out of here! Leave us alone!" she backed away from him. "Please!" she suddenly screamed when she felt someone grab her arm. "No, let me go! Please don't hurt us again!"
"Rina! Rina! Rina, hey, calm down! Rina, my darling!" the distant voice of Five echoed to her.
Karina suddenly shot out of the hallucination, gasping and feeling tears streaming down her face. She was still at the landing of the Hargreeves Mansion. She screamed, jerking out of Five's grasp in fear.
"Hey, whoa, whoa! Rina, it's just me. It's me, Five. Calm down, my love," Five cautiously reached out for her.
"Five?" she blinked a few times to make sure he wasn't a hallucination.
He nodded. "Yes, yes, it's me. I'm here." He was bruised up badly with a nasty cut on his forehead.
She grabbed him in a huge hug, clinging to him. He hugged her back and helped her to her feet.
"What happened to you? I heard you scream and after I blinked up here, you were crying and trying to get away from thin air," he checked over her in deep concern.
"Th-That Sparrow girl. She spit on me and made me hallucinate my mother and her abusive ex," Karina swallowed hard.
"Oh God, I'm so sorry...are you okay?" he looked at her worriedly and she nodded.
"I'm fine. But we all might not be if we don't move," Karina pointed out.
"Agreed. Let's get out of here!" Five grabbed her hand and the two ran off.
Luther was in the distance talking to Sloane. Allison joined the couple as they raced down the hall.
"Luther, we're leaving!" Five shouted, leaping over him.
"Just a second-" he stammered.
"Come on! We gotta go!" Allison and Karina cried.
Luther scrambled to get up after saying goodbye to Sloane and joined the four. Fei descended down the hall after them, sending her ravens after them. The ravens screeched and sailed through the air.
"Seriously?!" Luther was exasperated.
"Move, move, move, move!" Allison and Karina exclaimed, shoving the boys off.
The ravens squawked after them. Suddenly Karina gasped.
"Five, wait! We're forgetting something!" she told him urgently.
"The briefcase!" Five halted, blinking them out.
The two reappeared in the entry hall, but the briefcase was gone from the table. He began to look around the table quickly.
"Where's the briefcase, my doll?" Karina was anxious.
Five looked at her with huge eyes. "Shit...my darling...it's gone!"
The two looked up to see Vanya on the floor in the living room, groaning in pain. All of the Sparrows were beginning to surround her.
"Vanya, get out of there!" Five shouted to her.
She began to glow as an orb of light appeared from her sternum. Five backed away and grabbed Karina, blinking them out instantly.
~ * ~
Everyone regrouped at a park nearby.
"Just gonna sit. I'm just gonna sit for a minute," Luther groaned as he lowered himself down on a bench.
"That didn't go well," Diego commented.
"No, not our best work," Five agreed flatly. Karina was by his side, comfortably resting her head on his shoulder.
"Oh, I'm cracking," Klaus popped his joints, laying on the picnic table.
Allison looked at Luther in concern. "You all right?"
"I don't know yet," he replied. "I've just never had my ass handed to me like that before. It's like…Here you go. It's your ass."
She stared at him for a moment. "Okay, I think Luther's concussed," she announced.
Klaus sat up and held up three fingers. "Luther, how many fingers?"
"Oh my God. Vanya!" Luther exclaimed when Allison acknowledged her join the family.
"Oh. Thank God you're alive," Vanya said.
"You okay?" Allison asked.
"Apparently, so is Ben," Klaus remarked dryly.
"Yeah. And he's a complete dickhead," Allison commented.
"They're all dickheads," Diego chimed in.
"Dickheads who can fight," Luther added.
"Okay, next person to say "dickhead" is getting a punch to the throat," Five shot, gently rubbing Karina's back.
"Dickhead. Dickhead. Dickhead. Dickhead," everyone else except Karina fired off.
Five rolled his eyes at them in exasperation and she laughed softly in amusement.
"Hey, did Dad tell you why he was calling them his kids?" Diego questioned.
Klaus laughed. "He sure did! You ready?" he looked around. "Dad was so repulsed by us back in Texas, that he adopted an entirely different group of children just so that he didn't have to raise us."
"That's just peak Dad," Diego scoffed.
"Isn't it?" Luther remarked.
"So he just didn't want us anymore?" Vanya questioned.
"Did he ever?" Allison shot.
"See? I told you we shouldn't have asked him for help in '63," Luther looked at Five.
"I think you're all missing the big picture here," Five began. "If Dad didn't adopt us as kids, he changed the timeline."
"So who knows what else is different now," Karina finished.
"Shouldn't you two know?" Allison asked them.
"Sorry, Allison, but it might take us more than 20 minutes and a traumatic brain injury to figure this all out," Five responded, referencing to the hallucination he saw from Jayme. "Is that okay with you?"
Unlike Diego's dance party set to "Footloose" and Karina's childhood nightmare come back to life, Five saw her in a wedding dress at the wedding both of them wished they had.
"No, actually, it's not," Allison remarked.
"Guys, look, it's fine," Vanya interjected. "We still have the Commission's briefcase, so worst case, we can just go back in time and fix it."
"Great," Klaus pointed to her.
"Okay. There are two problems with that statement. First off-" Five stood up.
"Here we go," Klaus huffed.
"Time travel is a complicated thing, people," Five said.
"Yeah, we get it. Your job is so hard. Just…what?" Diego questioned.
"And secondly…I no longer have the briefcase," Five admitted.
Allison shot to her feet, staring at him in disbelief. "Five, where the hell is the briefcase?"
Five bit his lip, wondering that himself.
Later on, everyone began to wander off in a group. People were looking at them weirdly as they passed.
"What are we doing?" Allison was exasperated.
"Ruminating," Five responded casually, slipping his hand into Karina's subconsciously.
"It is a nice day," Karina added with a small smile.
"Why is everyone staring at us?" Klaus wanted to know.
"Because we look like the damn Village People just lost a fight," Diego grabbed his hat.
"Gimme that. Hey!" Klaus nearly tackled him.
"Ow!"
"Okay, you know what? I need to go find Claire," Allison said.
"Cut it out!" Klaus exclaimed.
"I will catch up with you guys later," Allison continued.
"Hey, Allison, no. First, let's get somewhere safe, clean up those cuts, and then we'll go find her," Vanya stopped her.
Luther was looking at a huge banner with Marcus and Ben on the front.
"Man, I hate those guys. Look at 'em with their…stupid smug…" Luther was trying to get it out.
"You can do it," Klaus whispered. "You can do it."
"…S.…S…Smug…Smugness," Luther finished.
Klaus sighed. "Keep working on it, big guy. You'll land one, eventually."
"But honestly, what are we doing? We can't stand here bleeding out in this park," Allison pointed out.
"I don't know, but we better gear up fast before they come for round two, all right?" Diego added.
"What makes you think they're gonna come after us?" Vanya asked.
"Because I would."
"Yeah, we did break into their house-" Klaus started.
"Our house," Allison corrected him.
"-Bust up all their nice antiques and shit," Klaus finished.
"Yeah. I don't think the crime-fighting…super nerds are gonna let that go," Luther put in.
"Let's just think of some place off the radar where we can lie low and not draw attention," Five spoke up.
"What kind of a weird-ass place are we not gonna draw attention?" Diego pointed out.
That was when everyone looked at Klaus expectantly.
~ * ~
Klaus excitedly led everyone to a jazzy, 1920s looking hotel. They crossed the street and they all crammed inside the revolving door.
"Oh. Okay. Honestly? Okay," Allison grunted.
Hotel guests quietly and coolly watched them.
"We don't all need to be squeezed…" Allison complained.
"There were two entrances, by the way," Five dryly commented while they all finally made it inside the hotel lobby.
"Oh, Hotel Obsidian. I missed you, you slutty old dame," Klaus breathed in happily. "Absorb her. Absorb her into your bosom. You know, 'cause back in her heyday, she played host to world leaders." He turned to face the Hargreeves. "Roosevelt, Gandhi, Stalin, Gorbachev, Castro, King Olaf of Norway, one of the Kim Jongs, Tito, Dalai Lama, Elvis, and not one but two Kardashians, allegedly." He grinned happily. "Wouldn't that-where you going?" he watched Allison walk off.
"I gotta make a call," she headed towards the phones.
So Klaus continued his history spiel. "Nowadays, she's just a flophouse, a party house for those of us not looking to be judged by society's rules and norms."
"You mean, a place to hide?" Luther dryly supplied.
"Exactly!" Klaus gleamed. "It's perfect! And the best part of it is, she's gonna look after us, no questions asked. Never ever. Right?"
They looked around at the hotel guests…silently judging and questioning them. Karina frowned as she glanced around nervously. She felt like something wasn't right.
"Come on," Klaus beckoned them to follow him.
"I may have questions," Diego admitted.
"Yeah, me too," Luther agreed.
"This place is weird," Vanya commented.
Five looked over at Karina, feeling her pressed against his side. "Hey. Are you okay?"
"What?" her head shot up and she jumped ever so slightly.
"You seem scared. What's wrong?" he reached for her arm.
"I don't know. I just...this hotel is giving me a weird feeling," she tried to shake it off however.
"Oh. Do you want to leave? I can take you somewhere for a bit."
"No, no, it's fine. I'll be fine."
"Okay..."
The two followed the others, hand in hand. Everyone crowded around the front desk.
Klaus rang the bell on the counter and then gasped when he saw who was there. "Chet! Mon frère! It's so great to see you. I'd like my usual suite, por favor."
Chet wordlessly strolled over and stopped the bell. "I've never seen you before."
"See?" Klaus looked over at Luther and Diego petting the dog on the counter. "Told you. Discreet."
Karina was still pressed against Five's side. He cautiously wrapped an arm around her.
"I've got you, my love," he softly assured her.
The dog whimpered slightly.
"Please stop scaring my dog," Chet sharply requested.
Luther and Diego slowly pulled back, eyeing him coolly.
"We need some rooms, please," Vanya requested.
"Super. And how will we be paying today?" Chet put out a paper tent that said "Cash Up Front".
"Ah," Luther clicked his tongue.
"Oh," Klaus faltered.
"Fine. Empty your pockets," Luther sighed. "Come on. Something."
Klaus pulled out some condoms, Diego had a knife, Vanya had some candy, Karina had a package of gum, and Five had some…teeth.
"Condom? Put the knife away!" Luther told Diego.
"Can't exchange those for cash," Klaus muttered.
"Why do I have a hairnet?" Luther frowned and everyone eyed him. "Oh." Luther sighed. "All right." He reluctantly took his rather expensive looking watch off.
"Ooh," Klaus eyed it.
"What does this get us?" Luther handed it to Chet.
Chet inspected it for a moment before going over to the cabinet. He retrieved a couple of keys as Allison rejoined the family.
"Two rooms," Chet set the keys down. "Mazel tov."
"Awesome," Klaus whispered as he took a key.
"All right. Well, let's Brady Bunch this bitch," Allison took the other key.
They journeyed down the hall towards the stairs leading up to the elevator.
"Uh, meet back in the bar in two hours so we can make a plan," Five announced.
Diego raced past and leapt onto the stairs. "I have a plan. We attack the Sparrows, and we take back our house, and then we punch Dad a bit until he admits that we're better and he loves us more. Boom! Done! We're wasting time!"
Klaus reached his arm out to his brother. "Relax. Don't sweat it, man. Those shit birds are staying put for a while. I bet they're as wiped as we are."
"Really?" Diego looked at him as everyone got into the elevator.
"Yeah. I mean, kicking our asses looked exhausting," Klaus responded breezily.

While the boys were getting settled into their room, Allison, Vanya, and Karina were entering theirs. It was decent sized with minimal light and surprisingly three beds to accommodate.
Vanya cleared her throat. "It's not too small. It's definitely ugly." She sighed.
The three flopped onto their beds as Karina stared up at the ceiling. It felt good but weird to be home after so long.
"Last night, I was sleeping in my own bed next to my amazing husband," Allison lamented.
"I kissed Sissy goodbye a few hours ago. Give or take 50 years," Vanya returned.
"I'm glad you finally found somebody that treated you right."
"She saw me for who I really am. I'm not ready to give that up."
"I feel the same about Ray," Allison was thoughtful. "We better not have left them just to die in some superhero turf war."
"You need to go home," Vanya told her.
"Hug your daughter," Karina added encouragingly.
Allison thought for a moment before she sat up on the edge of the bed. "What if Diego's right and the Sparrows attack?" she pointed out.
"We fought the entire Commission," Karina returned.
"She's right. I mean, we can handle, what? Seven jerks in uniforms?" Vanya scoffed. "They just caught us off guard."
"Yeah," Allison glanced down.
"You should go to the airport. And get back to your real life," Vanya urged. "I would if I could."
"Same here," Karina smiled at her.
"Thank you. You're both good sisters," Allison stood up. She waved before leaving the room to go reunite with her family.

Later on that evening, Karina decided to join the guys downstairs in the lobby. They were all gathered around a high top, eating Chinese food.
Klaus watched Luther and Diego shove their food into their mouths. "You should try chewing. You might actually taste the food," he commented rather dryly.
Karina laughed softly, sitting in between Five and Klaus.
"I haven't eaten in days," Luther had his mouth full. He eyed Five, who was in a fluffy white hotel bathrobe. "What's wrong? You look happy."
"I am plenty happy," Five came back from the bar and sat back down. "Had a nap and a shvitz and hopefully now get to spend some much needed quiet time with my wife." He winked at Karina. "What does a man need?"
"Brothers who don't eat like barn animals?" Klaus shot, making Luther and Diego pause. They had noodles hanging out of their mouths.
"So I've been thinking through our little timeline snafu, and I'm pleased to report that in my professional, expert opinion, we are totally in the clear," Five announced.
"Awesome! Huh! Great," came the replies from the guys.
"Yeah. So everything's totally fine?" Luther asked.
"More or less," Five hesitated a touch as he opened his box of noodles. "I mean, there is one…small thing. It's nothing we can't manage."
Everyone glanced at him expectantly.
"So spit it out, Boomer!" Diego prodded him impatiently and Karina had to bite back a laugh.
"Fine, Diego, it's like this," Five shot him a look. "Dad didn't adopt us as babies, but those babies still existed here."
"Aww!" Klaus groaned.
"We just grew up in different places with different people," Five continued.
"So?" Diego asked.
"So where are they now?"
"Odds are, we each have identical versions of ourselves walking around out there, living completely different lives," Karina put in, understanding where Five was going with this.
Luther gasped in realization. "Our doppelgängers!"
"That's a made-up word," Klaus remarked.
"No, no! I learned all about this in Texas! Tell him about the paranoid psychosis, Five!" Luther was excited.
"Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa!" Diego spoke up. "I thought you said this wasn't a problem."
Karina glanced at Five in partial amusement and he sighed.
"Okay, yes, technically, if you're near your doppel for long, you'll go insane. So, if you see your other self-"
"Kill them. Sleep with them," Diego and Klaus cut him off simultaneously.
"Avoid them!" Five and Karina corrected them instantly.
"What is wrong with you?" Luther eyed his brothers.
"Come on. As if you wouldn't climb Luther Mountain," Klaus eyed him saucily.
"Wait. How are we supposed to guarantee we don't cross paths with ourselves?" Diego pointed out.
"Easy. We're the Benetton ad of superheroes, born all around the world until Dad brought us here, which he no longer did. Doppels probably aren't even in the same time zone as us," Five said.
"That's true," Luther nodded.
"Mm. What about…her?" Diego pointed to Karina.
"No clue. My guess is my other self is living a totally, separate life. Hopefully a good one," she replied, looking down when she realized this probably meant her mother was no longer…well…her mother.
Five looked at her sadly, figuring out where her thoughts went. He took her hand and gave it a squeeze. She squeezed it back rather glumly.
"Is everything okay?" Klaus asked her.
"Yeah. Everything's fine," Karina sighed, looking back up and attempting to seem fine.
"Would you pass the moo shu, my love?" Five requested softly to try to help keep the attention off of her and so she did.
"I don't know," Klaus began. "Doesn't it seem kind of rude that Dad unadopting us didn't change anything? I'm offended."
Diego looked back and then shoved the rest of his noodles into his mouth. "Hold up."
"I never said that, Klaus," Five remarked.
"I'll be right back," Diego got up and jogged off.
"How are we gonna know where it changed?" Klaus pointed out.
"Never mind that, Klaus. It's fine," Karina took a bite of her noodles.
"The point is, we did it. We saved the world. We stopped the apocalypse. And made it home safe in time for dinner," Five added, taking her hand and squeezing it. "So whatever Dad changed, whatever timeline we're in now? We can handle it. We won." He held up his glass.
"We won," Luther grinned.
"Yeah. All right. All right," the four clinked their glasses together in celebration.

Warnings: mentions of blood, cursing, and violence.

Man On The Moon
~ * ~
Karina finished wrapping her side and headed out the door to go find Five. She was halfway through the main room when Pogo saw her.
"Mrs. Hargreeves, this is a surprise. How are you doing, my dear?" he asked her.
Karina was a bit taken back, not used to being addressed so formally. "Me? Um…I'm all right."
"I see. Are you sure you should be walking around? You were severely injured after all."
Karina waved it off. "Later. Right now, I have a husband to track down and berate."
"Master Luther and Master Diego are currently looking for him actually."
"Did they say where they were going?"
"I believe something about trying to find his van."
Karina nodded. "I know where they are. Thank you."
"Of course. Please be careful."
Karina smiled and quickly left the mansion, heading off to the alleyway across from the prosthetic building. In the distance, she saw and heard Luther and Diego hurrying towards the van.
"This is it. He's still here. This is Five's van," Luther spoke. "Go. Go." He went to open the door, rattling the handle. He sighed.
Diego stepped forward and picked the lock, opening the door. After he opened it, the two tried to go in at the same time.
"I'm One," Luther remarked to Diego.
Diego resisted an eye roll and slid the back door open.
"Damn it," Luther grunted as he slipped inside.
"What are you two up to?" Karina went up to them, watching the two rustle around the van.
"I thought you'd be resting after last night," Diego told her.
"Rested as I can be, anyway. Have you found anything?" she leaned on the van.
"Not yet. I'm surprised to see you here instead of with him," Luther was skimming through the glove box.
"He dropped me off last night and that was the last time I saw him."
"So, even you have no clue where he is? You're his wife," Luther frowned.
Karina shrugged. "We all have secrets I suppose."
"Still can't believe he's the first brother to get hitched amongst us," Diego mumbled.
Karina sighed, deciding to help them in their search. They all looked around for a good ten minutes, still finding nothing. Diego picked up a small notebook and skimmed through it.
He whistled, catching the attention of Luther and Karina. "I know where to find Five," he held up the notebook page.
~ * ~
The three of them made their way to a library. They went inside and looked around.
"Let's split up," Luther suggested.
Diego shot him a look. "Wow. Good thinking."
The three split up and searched around the entire library, along with its multiple floors, but circled back to one another on the top floor with no luck.
"Anything?" Luther asked them.
"No," Karina bit her lip and Diego sighed.
"You wanna know why I left?" Diego stopped Luther in his tracks.
"What? What are you talking about?" he slowly came back over.
"Why I left the Academy."
"Yeah, 'cause you couldn't handle me being Number One."
Karina held back from an exasperated eye roll, wondering where the nearest escape was as she leaned on the wall.
"No. Because that's what you do when you're 17. You move out, become your own person, grow up," Diego lowly said.
"Oh, yeah. You're a real grown-up," Luther shot.
"At least I make my own decisions," Diego shot back, looking at him. "You've never had to hold down a job. Pay bills. You ever even been with a girl?"
Oh Lord, help me Karina thought in exasperation. She crossed her arms and looked up at the ceiling, shaking her head.
"I…" Luther cleared his throat almost awkwardly. "I don't know what you're talking about."
Diego gave a chuckle of disbelief. "Look, you wanna blame me, blame us for leaving…that's okay. But maybe you're asking yourself the wrong question. Maybe it's not about why we left. Maybe it's about why you stayed," he pointed out.
"I stayed because the world needed me," Luther went over to his side.
"You stayed because you couldn't let go of the way things used to be. The Academy. Dad. With Allison," Diego gave him a meaningful look. "Dad's dead. Mom too, now. We're orphans again, dude."
An elevator bell dinged and Karina began to walk off.
"And things are never gonna go back to the way they used to…be," Diego finished.
Karina heard women laughing.
"Do you ever stop talking?" Luther questioned.
"Where are his parents?" a lady asked and Karina perked up, hurrying in that direction.
"Wow, that was easy," Luther commented as they followed her.
"I'm gonna call security," a blonde walked past Karina.
Diego and Luther halted when they saw the scene. Five was on the ground, snoring, with a bottle of liquor in one hand and his other arm lazily slung around Delores. Karina scoffed as she knelt down to feel his forehead.
"Is he, um…?" Luther strung out.
"Drunk as a skunk," Diego was mildly amused.
Karina glanced up at them, curious to hear their next best course of action as the bottle slipped from Five's grasp. She just sighed, knowing they were in for a long night.
Luther scooped up Five and Delores, the three of them quietly exiting the library.
~ * ~
The alleyway was dark and damp, but, the four really had no idea where there was a safe option to go.
"Well, we can't go back to the house. It's not secure. Those psychopaths could come back at any moment," Luther pointed out.
"I don't have enough room, otherwise I would have offered," Karina softly spoke.
"My place is closer. No one will look for him there," Diego returned.
Five burped and Luther sighed. "If you vomit on me…" he warned the boy.
"You know what's funny?" Five slurred out. "Aah! I'm going through puberty." He scoffed. "Huh. Twice. And I-" He abruptly chuckled. "I drank that whole bottle, didn't I?"
"Afraid so," Karina replied flatly.
"Hiya, wifey," Five's head lulled as he gazed at her drunkenly. "That's what you do when the world you love goes bye-bye. Poof, it's gone." He flailed to take her arm. "What are you guys talkin' about?" He shifted to look at Karina. "And what happened to your pretty face?"
Diego sighed. "Two masked intruders attacked the Academy last night. They came looking for you, and if you need anything more astounding to make you listen to me, they hurt Karina pretty badly. So I need you to focus. What do they want?" he cut to the chase.
"Hazel and Cha-Cha," Five replied.
"Who?" Diego looked back at him.
"You know, I hate code names," Luther added.
"Ah, the best of the best. Except for me, of course," Five chuckled.
"The best of what?" Luther looked down at him.
"You know, Rina always said she hated when I drink. She said it made me surly…" Five rambled, trying to kiss her.
"Hey!" Diego snapped.
"Hm?" Five looked at him. "Yeah?"
"I need you to focus," Diego stopped and turned to face him. "What do this Hazel and Cha-Cha want?"
Five broke out into a snarky grin.
"We just wanna protect you," Diego continued gently.
"Protect me. I don't need your protection, Diego," Five remarked. "Do you have any idea how many people I've killed?"
"No," Diego's voice was low.
"I'm the Four frickin' Horsemen. The apocalypse is coming," Five turned in Luther's arms and vomited behind him.
Luther looked up in alarm and Diego turned away. Karina winced in disgust.
"Will you kiss me yet? I miss you," Five gazed up at her.
"After you're sober and brushed your teeth," she tried not to choke from his breath.
So with that, Diego led them off to his place to lay low for the night.
~ * ~
Diego guided everyone through the gym and into his place. Luther gently laid Five down on the bed, who was deep asleep. Karina perched next to him and she smiled when he subconsciously found her hand and clung to it. She gently brushed some fallen hair out of his peaceful face.
Diego and Luther were watching them thoughtfully.
"Funny. If I didn't know he was such a prick, I'd say he looks almost adorable in his sleep," Diego commented sarcastically.
"Well, don't worry. He'll sober up eventually," Karina returned softly.
"Be back to his normal, unpleasant self," Luther added.
"Yeah, I can't wait that long," Diego walked away a few steps. "I need to find out what his connection is with these lunatics before someone else dies. All that stuff he was saying before-" He paused when everyone heard thumping overhead.
"What do you think he meant by that?" Luther wanted to know.
Outside in the hall, the sound of footsteps approached. Luther and Diego shared a look. Diego unsheathed a knife and quietly crept to the door.
"You throw another one of those goddamn knives at me, I'm pressin' charges!" Al threatened when Diego abruptly swung open the door.
"What do you want, Al?" Diego asked.
Al stepped into the doorway. "I ain't your secretary."
"Yeah," Diego mumbled and headed down the stairs.
"Some lady called for you, said she needs your help."
"What lady?"
"I dunno. Some, uh, detective. I think she said her name was, uh, Blotch or somethin'."
"Patch?" Diego corrected and Al shrugged. He began to grin. "She needs my help."
"She needs you to meet her at that motel, a dump on Calhoun," Al informed him as he came up the stairs and looked at the note Al scribbled down. Luther slowly came over.
"When?" Diego questioned.
"About half an hour ago. Uh, said she found your brother," Al left the room.
The two boys looked at Five in confusion.
"Well, that didn't make sense," Diego commented.
"Klaus," they both drew out in realization.
"Go. I'll wait here with-" Luther stopped himself when Diego ran out and the door slammed shut. "Them," he sighed.
Karina nervously fiddled with her necklace, anxiously awaiting for Diego to return. Luther looked down at Delores in the chair and awkwardly patted her head.

The Frankel Footage
~ * ~
On April the 1st, 2019, the Earth was destroyed in a cataclysmic event.
Billions of people were wiped out in a matter of minutes.
Ironically, the seven survivors of the apocalypse were the very family members who brought it on.
~ * ~
Five leapt up from his seat and ran after Luther. Karina slowly got up, following after him.
"The hell is wrong with you, Luther? I just told you the world's gonna end in ten days," Five stopped him.
"Yeah, well, you're always saying that," he tried to leave again, but Five stopped him.
"And so far, I've been right!"
"Look, you two want to go save the world? Knock yourselves out, all right? I already got a job," Luther remarked.
"Wait, you work in this shit hole?" Five wrinkled his nose.
"Yeah. Well, my boss owns the place. I'm his body man," Luther briefly explained.
"What's that? Like a masseuse or something?" Five frowned as Karina scoffed out,"You're into politics now?"
"Okay, you two can make fun all you want, but I take good care of Mr. Ruby," Luther defended himself.
Five paused and Karina asked, "Wait, Ruby?"
"The Jack Ruby, the gangster who shot Oswald?" Five stared at Luther.
"Yeah, the one and only," Luther lifted a shoulder casually.
"Well, it finally happened. That gorilla DNA has taken over your mind," Five commented.
"Hey, watch it, all right? Jack's a good friend," Luther whispered.
"And you're Number One. Número Uno. Remember?" Five pointed out.
"There is no Number One," Luther shook his head. "Not anymore. Not in 1963. Look, I've been stranded here alone for a year. What did you expect?"
"I get it, all right?" Five sighed. "You watched Pogo die, the world exploded, and I marooned your big dumb ass in time. I'm sorry, okay?" he sighed. "But I'm asking for your help, Luther. The Umbrella Academy needs you."
He scoffed softly. "It doesn't need me. It never did."
A woman came over and said something to Luther.
"Ah, shit," Luther tried to walk past.
"Luther, wait. Listen," Five took his arm.
Luther looked at him. "You're the genius who said we should jump. Right? You're the one who got us stuck here. And Karina was the one who brought Vanya. So if there is a doomsday coming, she's probably the cause. And if I was gonna do something about it, it sure as hell is not gonna be with you two."
With that oh so reassuring remark, he left the two. Five and Karina sat at the bar, probably gaining some looks. Five definitely gained some when he slid a glass of whiskey off a passing tray.
"You do realize people are looking at us, right?" Karina eyed him.
"Does it look like I care?" he shot back.
She merely rolled her eyes as they watched Luther peel a drunk man away from Jack Ruby.
Five took a drink and set the glass down. "Dad should have left him on the moon."
Karina gave him a look, but didn't say a word.
"What? No nudge or comment in their defense to make me be nicer?" Five airily joked.
"Split second decision to stop wasting my breath on it," she sighed.
He shook his head as the two slid out of the chairs. Though Five's blazer got caught and ripped.
"Nice going. I don't think I can fix that," Karina inspected his pocket, but she frowned when she pulled out a small box with a roll of film in it. "Five? What's this?"
Five plucked it from her hand and studied it carefully. Then he remembered. Hazel slipped it into his pocket yesterday.
"Hazel. We need to get this developed as soon as possible. Come on," Five blinked them out and back to Elliot's place.
~ * ~
Karina was inspecting the photos Elliott had pinned up. "Elliot, did you develop these photos yourself?"
"Of course. Can't exactly drop that stuff off at the neighborhood Fotomat. Government has eyes everywhere," Elliot answered.
"I didn't see a darkroom," she glanced at him.
"Yeah, I converted the hallway closet."
Elliot tended to a squealing machine as Five marked out the date on the box.
He strolled over to him with the box of film. "Can you develop this?"
"Hmm?" Elliot turned and took the box, reading the back. "Huh. "Frankel Footage." Friends of yours?"
"Cousins on my robot mother's side. Can you do it or not?"
"Sure I can."
"How long?" Karina questioned.
"Well, I mean, I'm running low on acetic acid," Elliot began. "Beeker's Cameras is open today, but it's two miles away. I mean, I'd have to take the bus. On the other hand, Gibson's is only ten blocks away, but I gotta cut through the park, and there's pigeons-"
"Elliott," Five interrupted him.
"It's like five, maybe six hours."
"Attention all units, we have a code 3-15 at the Holbrook Sanitarium," a man's voice from the radio announced.
Five glanced back and then at Elliot. "The hell is a code 3-15?"
"Mmm, fugitives on the run."
"Twenty-five patients still at large. Many are considered armed and dangerous," the voice continued as Five and Karina made their way over.
"Oh, Diego," Five whispered.
"Oh, who's Diego?" Elliot joined them.
Five pursed his lips. "Imagine Batman, then aim lower," he shot.
The radio chatter continued indistinctly.
"I swear, that man will never learn. He's an idiot. Soon he's going to have all the feds after him!" Karina commented in disbelief.
Five let out a laugh, looking up in amusement.
"What are you laughing at?" she eyed him sideways.
"Oh, how I adore you, darling," he planted a kiss on her cheek. Then he looked at Elliot. "You get started on that film. We'll be back as soon as we can."
With that, Five and Karina blinked out.
~ * ~
Five and Karina reappeared in the backseat of the car Diego and Lila Pitts were hiding in.
"Then why are you doing this?" Lila asked Diego.
"Because he is an idiot," Five replied, causing Lila to jump and whip around.
"Who the hell are you two?" she questioned.
"Hi. I'm his loving brother," Five smiled and waved sarcastically.
"I'm his affectionate sister-in-law," Karina added.
"Who left me to rot in the nuthouse. Both of you," Diego was still mad about that.
"To protect you from yourself," Five retorted.
"That's quite sweet," Lila commented.
"Okay, the three of you, out!" Diego shouted.
"Lose the crazy lady and come with us. We have important business," Five turned to Diego.
"I am not going anywhere with you two," Diego fired back.
Five eyed a policeman walking past. "Okay, fine." He slid over to the window. "Officer!" he called out smugly.
"Hey!" Diego launched himself at Five, grabbing his blazer and pulling him back. "What are you doing?"
"I hear there's a reward out for you two and I'm long overdue for a honeymoon," Five retorted, causing Karina to eye him with an arched eyebrow.
Lila blinked. "He's bluffing."
Diego stared down at Five, who had a sly expression.
"He's not," Karina casually stated.
"Fine. I'll go with you two," Diego relented.
"What about me?" Lila spoke up.
Five, Diego, and Karina looked at her.
"And I'm bringing the crazy lady. Because if you can take your wife around, I can take Lila around," Diego told Five before he could object.
Five and Karina glanced at Lila warily, but decided to stay silent as to not lose Diego's compliance.
~ * ~
The four made their way up the stairs from the salesroom to Elliot's place.
However, they were met with a very panicked Elliott, aiming a shotgun at them as he came out of a room. "Where did you get the film? "The Frankel Footage." The truth this time."
"You know this lunatic?" Diego asked.
Five sighed. "New acquaintance."
"He's harmless," Karina added.
"Are you sure about that?" Lila pointed out.
"Are you or are you not an enemy of the people?" Elliot shouted.
The four paused for a second from that.
"Such an open-ended question," Diego commented.
"Really depends on the people," Five nodded in agreement.
Lila and Karina exchanged a rather confused look.
"You move one more muscle, I will blow your brains out," Elliot threatened.
"You want to take this or should I?" Diego questioned lowly.
"No, I got him," Five clenched his jaw.
"Hey, Lila…" Diego turned her to him as Five blinked out.
Five reappeared in front of Elliott, shoving his rifle up as Elliot shot at the ceiling and made glass rain down. Diego grabbed the rifle from Elliot and emptied it.
"What the hell just happened?" Lila sputtered out.
Karina sighed. "I'll go get the footage. Elliot, dear, where did you put it?" She glanced at him as he speechlessly flailed his hand. "The table? Excellent."
After securing aka tying up Elliot, Karina got a projector and Diego hung up a sheet so everyone could watch. Lila was busily painting Elliot's toenails green.
"Is it on?" the woman in the footage asked. "I don't know. What do you mean? There's an "on" button. Just-there's something over-that jigga-ma-thing, whatever."
"I hit the jigga-ma-thing," the man in the footage told her.
"Okay, well, just-give it to me. I know how to do this."
"All right, here. Here. Hurry up."
"Okay, all right, let's see…" their chatter continued on film.
"They're so cute. I love old couples. I'm always so proud of them for not murdering each other," Lila spoke casually.
Karina held back a snort from that, finding irony in her statement. She was pressed against Five's side with his arm around her waist.
"Why are we watching this?" Diego was sitting on the counter.
"Shush," Five told him.
"Yeah, I…I'm Dan Frankel. And…" the man introduced himself.
"I'm Edna Frankel," the woman's voice cut in.
"Edna Frankel," Dan echoed. "We are in Dallas, Texas, to see the president. Today's date is November 22, 1963."
That made Diego's head turn.
"Well, that's six days from now," Lila observed rather skeptically.
"Holy shit. This is it," Diego leaned forward and Elliot fidgeted some. "The grassy knoll. Kennedy's about to get shot. How do you have this?" Diego wanted to know.
"Hazel died to get us this footage. It must be the key to stopping doomsday," Five replied.
"Hazel?" Diego repeated.
"Long story," Karina responded.
"What's doomsday?" Lila piped up.
"Longer story," Five kept his eyes on the screen.
"What exactly did he say to you two?" Diego questioned.
"Well, he was killed before he could explain," Karina sighed.
"But whatever he wanted us to see, it's on this film," Five finished.
"This is very exciting," Dan continued as gunshots suddenly sounded in the film.
People began screaming.
"Oh, my God!" Dan exclaimed.
"Oswald," Diego muttered.
"The president!" Dan commented as screams continued on film.
Five exhaled when he saw an all too familiar figure. "Oh, no." He went over to the machine and rewound the film, pausing it.
He and Diego were staring at the screen in disbelief as Five moved the machine farther away.
"This can't be," he went towards the screen.
"Okay, you gonna fill me in now, boys? What the hell is this shit we're watching?" Lila watched them approach the screen closely.
"No, that's impossible," Diego said.
"Clearly, it's not," Five remarked.
"What…What is it?" Elliot asked, though his voice was muffled.
"Dad," Five and Diego breathed out in shock.
After a few moments of collective shock, the world seemed to resume orbit. Five was pacing relentlessly and Diego was perched on the table.
"Of course Dad would be involved in the assassination. I should've known," Diego muttered.
"No, you're jumping to conclusions," Five retorted.
"What else is he doing standing on the grassy knoll, holding an open black umbrella on a sunny day in Dallas the exact same moment the president gets shot?" Diego leapt to his feet and shouted.
"It doesn't look good, I admit!"
"No, he's the signalman for the whole goddamn thing."
"Easy, Diego," Five warned him.
"Seriously," Karina added, watching them closely with her arms crossed.
"No, it makes sense. This is what Hazel was obviously trying to tell you two," Diego argued. "We have to stop Dad from killing the president."
"Diego, calm down, all right?" Five sighed. "Dad was no Boy Scout, but presidential assassination? It's never been his thing."
"How would you know? You skipped out on his golden years and decided it was a grand idea to get yourself married on top of that," Diego snapped.
Five felt hurt from that. "Skipped out? You think Rina and I had it easy, Diego? We were the only two people left in that forsaken world for 45 years!" He glanced at Karina and then took a breath. "You know what? We don't have the time for this right now." He tried to compose himself again. "Dad's clearly in Dallas, right? Let's just go talk to him. Maybe he can help us fix the timeline." He paced over to Karina's side.
"Dallas is a big place. We need to find him first," Diego pointed out.
"Gee, if only we had some magical, old-timey way of finding people and their addresses," Karina sarcastically shot.
Five dug around and found an address book, dropping it on a coffee table.
"Let's start simple. His name," Five suggested.
Diego began flipping through the pages, hovering over the book. "Hargreeves…Hargreeves…Hargreeves…shit, nothing here."
"Try his company, D.S. Umbrella Manufacturing Co.," Five put out there.
Diego slowly turned to shoot him a glare. "Yeah, I know the name. Thanks." He flipped through the pages and then skimmed down the names. "Uh…holy shit. "D.S. Umbrella. Eighty-two Olive." Let's go." He began to walk away.
Five followed him. Elliott was grunting, muffled as the two strolled past him casually.
"He okay to leave here like that?" Diego questioned.
"Yeah, he's fine."
"What about the girl?"
Five and Diego looked back. Elliott was grunting loudly.
"Shit," Diego went to go find Lila.
Five sighed as he went over to Karina, who was fixing a pot of tea.
"So you and Diego are off to find Sir Reginald?" she asked, adjusting the kettle.
"Yeah," he replied.
"Am I staying or going?"
Five bit his lip. "As much as I'd love to have you with me, I don't fancy the idea of Dad meeting you right now. Or…ever."
"I figured. Besides, no offense, this sounds like something between you all and you all only," Karina returned. "Plus I can keep an eye on Elliot."
"That'll be interesting on your behalf. Besides, you deal with enough drama from the in-laws as it is. Don't want to throw the father-in-law into the mix."
"Thanks for the consideration."
"Only for you," Five then sighed. "I'll be back, I promise."
"I know you will," Karina smiled, blushing when he kissed her cheek.
"Hey, Romeo! Come on, we have a father to hunt down!" Diego shouted to him.
"I'm going to kill him someday," Five growled.
"No you won't. You better go," Karina laughed.
He shook his head and left her to go accompany his annoying brother to go find their screwed up adoptive father.

A Light Supper
~ * ~
On April the 1st, 2019, the Earth was destroyed in a cataclysmic event.
Billions of people were wiped out in a matter of minutes.
Ironically, the seven survivors of the apocalypse were the very family members who brought it on.
~ * ~
Lila was still struggling beneath Five's foot, grunting loudly and gasping.
"You've got a good nose," the Handler continued.
"You know, planting her in a psych ward, taking advantage of my simpleton brother, that was smart," Five retorted.
"Well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree," the Handler casually stated. Lila was choking softly now.
Karina and Five's heads snapped up, staring at the Handler. "She's your-" Karina began.
"Daughter. Yes," the Handler finished for her. "And she's my only one, so I'd appreciate it if your oh so beloved husband didn't crush her windpipe."
Lila gasped, grunting for air. Five hesitated for a second before he removed his foot and Lila cried out, panting as she got to her feet.
"I am so going to enjoy killing you two someday," she hissed dangerously.
Five and Karina eyed her nonchalantly.
"Lila, darling, would you give us a minute, please?" the Handler requested.
"Yes, the grown-ups need to talk," Five added smugly.
The Handler gave her a soft smile and Five was grinning sarcastically. Karina gave a little wave of her fingers as Lila rolled her eyes. She stalked off, smacking a scrap of something off a box and making it clatter loudly onto the ground.
"What is it you want?" Five asked once it was just the three of them.
"Do you like jazz, Five? Karina?" the Handler was casual.
"I'd rather lick a cheese grater," he remarked instantly.
"Aww. Jazz is like a beautiful woman," the Handler circled around them. She was studying Karina. "Take your lovely Mrs. Hargreeves. Jazz is like your wife. Complex, emotional, hard to please. She doesn't just give it to you. She makes you work for it."
"Instead of comparing my wife to a stripper in front of me; I'm really hoping that you're going somewhere with this," Five wrapped an arm around Karina, pulling her flush to his side.
"Under my leadership, the Commission would sound more like…" the Handler lowered her voice to a whisper. "Jazz." She hummed a soft jazz rhythm.
"And what about the board of directors?" Karina crossed her arms.
"Well, that's where you two come in!" the Handler bopped her on the nose and Karina swatted her hand away.
"Nope. No, it isn't!" Five automatically piped up.
"In exchange for the assassination of the board, I'm willing to get you and your family out of this timeline and back to 2019 where you belong," the Handler proposed.
"And what about World War III that's due to kick off in just a few days?" Five watched her closely.
"Once you, your wife, and your siblings are gone, that goes away."
"And the apocalypse when we get back to 2019?" Karina added.
"That too."
"I distinctly remember you telling me that that apocalypse had to happen, that it was supposed to happen," Five shot.
"Back then I was toeing the company line, but once I'm in charge…" the Handler mimicked another jazz tune. "The three of us…we can riff…" She danced around, nudging the two of them.
"Jazz," Five and Karina muttered thoughtfully.
"Exactly," the Handler grinned, going back to standing in front of them.
Five walked off, running a hand through his hair.
"What about the board of directors, hmm? I mean, nobody knows who they are," Karina pointed out.
"Correct," the Handler responded. "But once every fiscal quarter, they get together for a board meeting."
"Where?" the couple questioned at the same time.
"The question is when. They meet somewhere in the timeline but never in the same place twice. The exact location and date of these board meetings is the most closely-guarded secret in the Commission," she answered.
"But you know where it's gonna be, don't you?" Five assumed.
"Would I be any good at what I do if I didn't?"
Five and Karina exchanged a glance as he leaned back on the table. He crossed his arms and she bit her lip thoughtfully. The Handler was smiling down at them.
"We need some time to think about it," Five announced, standing up.
"Fine," the Handler watched the two walk off. "But remember, doomsday's right around the corner, and the way things are going, I'm your only option."
They scoffed softly.
"Not yet you aren't," Five spoke over his shoulder.
And with that, he blinked them out.
~ * ~
Five and Karina were standing in front of the hotel. He looked down at the two invitations they received from Sir Reginald.
"This feels like a set up," Karina commented as they went inside.
"We'll see," Five returned. He sighed. "I'm just wondering how he knew about you."
"Perhaps he caught a glimpse of us together at the consulate and has a good memory."
He sighed, pressing a button for the elevator. "I'm not too thrilled to have him meet you, no matter what decade we're in but, I suppose I was delaying the inevitable."
"I always figured we'd never formally and properly meet each other's parents," Karina blankly stared ahead.
Five grimaced from that, not missing the uncharacteristic bitterness in her unusual sharp tone. "Your mother," he very quietly began. "You miss her, don't you?"
"Of course I do. Every day," Karina replied tightly, swallowing hard to stop her tears from appearing.
He nodded wordlessly, letting his fingers lace around hers and give her hand a loving squeeze. The elevator dinged and the doors slid open. The two went in, exhaling slowly. Five pressed the button to their designated floor. The doors began to slide closed.
Just then, Diego appeared and stopped the doors. "Wait up."
Footsteps sounded from the hall and Allison came in next. "Hold it."
"Hey, everyone," Klaus came next with Vanya.
"Excuse me," Luther rounded up the group.
Five smirked triumphantly, his arm around Karina's waist. "Good. We're all here."
The elevator dinged and the doors closed. Halfway up the floors, Luther grunted softly and everyone unluckily breathed in.
"Oh…" Allison wrinkled her nose.
"Oof!" Five, Vanya, and Karina coughed.
"Luther!" Klaus scolded.
"Oh, my God," Karina almost choked.
"Sorry, I'm nervous," Luther apologized.
The elevator dinged and everyone escaped the elevator at once, muttering in disgust.
"Nasty. I'm choking! None of that," came the complaints.
They all stepped into a tiki themed lounge. Island music played softly over speakers.
"All right, when Dad gets here, I'll do the talking, okay?" Five spoke.
"Got a few questions for him myself," Diego cut in.
"Hey, we don't wanna scare him off, alright? He might be able to help us stop doomsday, get us home."
"No, Five, we need to figure out why he's planning to kill the president."
"This is a matter of life and death, you imbecile!"
"Okay, yeah, maybe you all should take turns talking," Karina suggested quickly.
"Yeah? Here, whoever has got this conch shell gets to talk," Vanya agreed, walking back to the table with the shell.
"Vanya, we don't have time for a debate, okay?" Five sighed.
"Maybe I should lead. We all know I'm a better public speaker than the rest," Allison announced boldly as she took the shell.
"Okay, Daddy's girl," Diego remarked.
"Oh, jealous, Number Two?"
"Hey, no more numbers. No more bullshit. We're Team Zero. We're all Team Zero," he went over to her.
"Uh, Diego?" Luther piped up, already sitting down at the table. "You don't have the conch."
Diego flashed a small, sarcastic smile before he grabbed the shell and threw it at the wall, shattering it.
"Classic," Allison sighed flatly.
The back door crashed open as Sir Reginald Hargreeves himself stalked in. Everyone fell silent in a heartbeat. He went over to his place at the table as everyone formally sat down.
"Not only have you burglarized my lab, set my chimp loose, conned your way into the Mexican consulate, repeatedly stalked and attacked me, but you have, on numerous occasions, called me-" he broke off as Klaus pulled back a chair and grunted softly when he plopped down next to him.
"Hey, Pop. How's it hangin'?" he casually greeted.
Sir Reginald eyed him warily. "…'Dad'. My reconnaissance tells me you're not CIA, not KGB, certainly not MI5, so…who are you?"
Everyone opened their mouths as if to speak, but no words came out as they closed their mouths respectively.
"We're your children, except one of us is your daughter-in-law," Five answered, subtly nodding his head to Karina next to him. "We're from the future. In 1989, you adopted us all and trained us to fight against the end of the world. Called us the Umbrella Academy."
"Why on earth would I adopt six-"
"Seven," Allison corrected him. "One of us isn't here."
"Dead," Diego lowly added. "One of us is dead."
"Dead, yes, but I'm here," Ben was sitting behind Klaus. "Klaus! Tell them I'm here!"
"Yeah, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba!" he shushed over him dismissively. "Enough of that now."
Sir Reginald eyed him. "Regardless, what would possess me to adopt seven ill-mannered malcontents? More or less possess you to marry one of these ill-mannered malcontents?" he glanced at Karina for that one.
"We all have special abilities," Five leaned forward defensively before she could answer.
"Special? In what sense?" Sir Reginald questioned.
"In the superpower sense," Luther responded slowly.
"Called me old-fashioned, but I'm a stickler for a pesky little thing called evidence," Sir Reginald nearly demanded and everyone shared a hesitant, exasperated look. "Show me."
"Everybody wants to see powers all of a sudden," Allison scoffed sarcastically, taking a sip of her drink.
"We're not circus animals, okay? We're not gonna bounce balls on our noses and clap our hands like seals for your amusement," Luther remarked.
Diego unsheathed a knife casually and let it fly, arching around Sir Reginald's head. It loudly thudded against a wall.
"What are you writing?" Karina noticed him scribbling something in his notebook and everyone tried to peek at the pages.
"You are zero for two, young man," Sir Reginald ignored her question.
Allison sputtered on her drink and Diego shot to his feet, about to tackle him. Five blinked out and reappeared in front of him, holding him back.
"Stop!" Five whispered harshly and Karina gave the two a warning glare.
"Now that is interesting," Sir Reginald was thoughtful.
Five sighed. "All right, uh, quick rundown. Luther: super strength. Klaus can commune with the dead. Allison can rumor anyone to do anything." He sat back down next to Karina.
"Except she never uses it," Diego fired back, sitting down as well.
"Oho, you're on a roll today," Karina commented sassily, swirling her margarita around.
"I heard a rumor you punched yourself in the face," Allison looked at Diego.
"Aah!" he yelled when his fist collided with his face. Five turned to Sir Reginald and acknowledged him with his hand.
Diego groaned and held his nose. "Damn it!"
Allison casually slurped her drink.
"And you?" Sir Reginald looked at Vanya.
"Uh, maybe we don't take Vanya for a test run," Luther immediately said.
"Oh, yeah, that's probably not a good idea," Klaus agreed, slipping down in his chair some.
"Yeah."
Vanya sat up, determined to give it a shot. "It's fine. I can handle it."
"Handle it?" Allison echoed.
"Last time you handled it, you definitely blew up the moon. No! Vanya, don't!" came the overlapping protests from Allison, Luther, and Five.
She picked up her fork and clinked it against the glass. A high-pitched tone resonated, sending fruit smashing into everyone as they jerked back in their chairs. Everyone sighed and tried to wipe themselves off.
"This is my favorite shirt," Klaus complained.
"Oops," Vanya shyly looked down with a rather satisfied smile.
"That was impressive," Luther commented.
"Look, we know that you're involved in a plot to assassinate the president," Diego got everyone back on track, standing up.
Everyone eyed him in exasperation.
"You were recently hospitalized, isn't that correct? You still appear to be suffering from delusions of grandeur and acute paranoia," Sir Reginald stared at him.
"Am I? Explain this," Diego pulled out a photograph and set it down in front of him. "That's you. That's two days from now on the grassy knoll at the exact spot the president's gonna get shot."
Sir Reginald gently took the photo and studied it. "Well…I suppose you've solved it." He put the photo down. "You've single-handedly unearthed my nefarious plot. Is that what you want to hear? You fancy yourself a do-gooder? The last good man who will save us from our descent into corruption and conspiracy? This is a fantastic delusion. The sad reality is that you're a desperate man, tragically unaware of his own insignificance, desperately clinging to his own ineffectual reasoning. More succinctly, a man in over his head."
"Y-You're wr-wrong," Diego stuttered out weakly.
Everyone was dead silent from that, hesitating to speak or move. Five noticed Karina shift in her chair and he took her hand beneath the table, squeezing it.
"Look, forget about the president," Karina got the attention off of poor Diego.
"We have a catastrophic war coming in five days," Five chimed in. "We need to figure out how to stop it."
"War? Men will always be at war with each other," Sir Reginald remarked.
"No, this isn't just some war. I'm talking about a doomsday. The end of the world."
"Well…you're the special ones, aren't you? Why don't you band together and do something about it?"
Everyone hopelessly stared at the man in disbelief and agony.
"All right. Screw it!" Ben shot up from the table he was at and launched himself into Klaus's body.
Klaus grunted and let out choked gasped, shaking violently with his arms thrown up in the air.
"Is he having a seizure?" Allison was staring at him.
"Overdosing probably," Diego muttered flatly.
"Should we do something?" Karina whispered to Five.
Klaus was shuddering and grunting, causing everyone to stare at him now.
"Klaus!" Five whispered harshly. "Now is not the time! What are you doing?!"
Klaus turned to Sir Reginald. "I'm…" he distortedly gurgled.
"Out with it, boy!" Sir Reginald demanded impatiently.
"…Ben!" Ben managed to choke out before he fell out of Klaus's body.
Klaus himself gasped, collapsing to the floor and panting. He shuddered from the aftermath.
Sir Reginald slowly turned to the others. "Well…" He gathered up his belongings. "Thank you for coming. I've seen about enough." He got to his feet and stepped over Klaus carefully.
"No, I-" Luther stopped himself. He suddenly pounded on the table and shot to his feet, ripping his shirt open to reveal his half-ape body. "Look at what you did to me. Look at it!" he shouted.
Allison choked on her drink.
"Oh, shit. Why?" Five flopped back in his chair in disgusted mortification.
Vanya looked shocked and confused as Karina just took a long drink, thinking that her in-laws were all insane.
Sir Reginald looked at Luther before turning to Five and Karina. "You in the culottes, along with the blonde clinging to your side." He pointed to them and they looked up at him. "A word, in private?" He pointed towards the bar.
Fearing the worst, Five slowly got up and helped Karina to her feet before they followed Sir Reginald to the bar. The rest of the family grudgingly filed out, leaving the three of them to freely speak in peace.
"You two seem to be the sensible ones of the bunch. Even though you speak rather out of tongue for a young girl as yourself," Sir Reginald eyed Karina evenly.
"That's because we're the oldest and she can handle her own," Five returned. "You know, technically, we're older than you right now."
"Cognac?" Sir Reginald offered.
"Just a smidge," Five replied and Karina nodded.
"The other night you quoted Homer at me. Why?"
"You forced us all to learn it as kids. In the original Greek, no less," Five explained.
The bartender poured the three their drinks and they acknowledged one another with their glasses before taking a sip.
"Mmm," Five hummed. "This world ends in five days if we don't get out of the timeline."
"Worlds end. Paleozoic, Jurassic, and so on," Sir Reginald returned.
Five instantly shook his head and put his glass down. "We can do something about this one."
"Man's greatest flaw: the illusion of control."
"We need your help. All right?" Karina put in. "You're our last sane option."
"Otherwise, we gotta make a deal that we really don't wanna make," Five admitted. "What do you know about time travel?"
"In theory?"
"In practice."
"I know it's akin to descending blindly into the depths of freezing waters and reappearing-"
"As an acorn," Five interrupted him knowingly. "Yeah."
"What transpired when you tried traveling before?"
"I botched it."
"How?"
"I jumped too far forward, got stuck in the future for 45 years in an apocalypse. Then I jumped too far backwards…except this time I brought my entire family with me," Five briefly summed up.
"Maybe your appetite is disproportionate to the size of your abilities," Sir Reginald reasoned. "Start small. Seconds, not decades."
"Seconds?" Five echoed in disbelief.
"Mmm."
"Look, no offense, but I need a bit more time for what I'm trying to accomplish."
"So much can change in a matter of seconds. One could overthrow an empire. One could fall in love, as you obviously have and might I add she is very suited for you," Sir Reginald glanced to Karina. "An acorn doesn't become an oak overnight."
"I was really hoping you had more than that," Five admitted disappointedly.
"I'm sorry I can't be of more help."
"I'm sorry, too," Five looked down. "I gave you such a hard time as a kid. I didn't know any better."
"Hmm. No skin off my teeth, old man," Sir Reginald returned and sipped some more of his drink.
Five sighed and shook his head. He and Karina grabbed their glasses, downing their whole drinks.
Lord knows they'd need it.
~ * ~
Five and Karina arrived at the green double doors of the rather fancy and elegant hotel. Five knocked and the doors dramatically swung open to reveal The Handler.
"Ah! Just in time for a nightcap!" she beamed when she saw them. She strolled off.
Five reluctantly made his way into the room and Karina waited a few seconds. She sighed, forcing herself to join his side.
The Handler stated making the three drinks as Five glanced around before closing the doors. The cocktail shaker sloshed for a moment before liquid poured. A cigarette lighter clicked open.
"To be clear," Five turned to face the Handler, who had two cocktails in her hands for the couple. "We take out the board-" He sighed. "-You get me, my wife, and my family home."
"No more doomsday, no more apocalypse. Is that correct?" Karina coldly finished.
"That's the deal," the Handler laid across the bed, looking at the two.
Five and Karina exchanged a look of resignation.
"Then we're in."
"I'm holding you to that. Because last few times your deals have been real shitty," Karina seethed.
"Feisty aren't we? Might want to save the fire for the mission," the Handler breezily advised.
Karina's jaw clenched. "Your missions are even worse."
"Oh, you hold such meaningless grudges. That was once all right? I admit, it was a bad move on my behalf, but, you got what I needed and that was that. Never had to be sent out again," the Handler returned, giving her a sharp dagger. "Besides, you're older and wiser and stronger and oh, not to mention: with someone. You won't be alone this time, Karina."
"Being older and smarter and stronger was never the problem," she quietly bit out, evenly looking at the Handler.
Five didn't like the direction this conversation was going and he wondered what exactly they were sparring about.
"It's in your past, doll. You've moved on to bigger and better things, such as this," the Handler held up a piece of paper containing the location and time of the board meeting.
Five hesitatingly plucked the paper from her fingers and the two read the address. He glanced up at the Handler blankly and heaved a breath.

The End Of Something
~ * ~
On April the 1st, 2019, the Earth was destroyed in a cataclysmic event.
Billions of people were wiped out in a matter of minutes.
Ironically, the seven survivors of the apocalypse were the very family members who brought it on.
~ * ~
All of the Hargreeves were inside Elliot's place, watching the news unfold on a TV.
"Authorities are asking for help identifying several persons of interest at Dealey Plaza at the time of the assassination. The FBI believes they may have been acting in concert with the alleged shooter, Lee Harvey Oswald. Vanya Hargreeves, wanted in connection with the deaths of several FBI agents inside the federal building at Dealey Plaza. A Cuban exile known only as Diego…" the reporter said, showing photos of each member.
"Cuban?" Diego scoffed.
"…Who recently escaped from the Holbrook Sanitarium. A bare-knuckle boxer with suspected Mafia ties who fights under the alias "King Kong." Allison Chestnut, a Negro radical responsible for instigating and organizing the recent riots at Stadtler's lunch counter. And finally, Klaus, the controversial cult leader and known tax evader. The FBI is asking the public to be on the lookout for this unidentified boy and girl, who they believe are being held hostage by the suspected terrorist network."
Five and Karina glanced at one another.
"Well, it's true. I personally feel like I'm being held hostage most days," Five agreed.
"God, I hate that photo," Diego complained.
"They're saying I instigated the riot?" Allison scoffed. "That's unbelievable."
"Look, the good news is that we restored the timeline and we stopped doomsday," Luther sighed. "So-"
"Yeah, a bunch of real goddamn heroes. We let Kennedy die," Diego cut him off.
"Yeah, and now we're officially the most wanted people in the world," Allison piped up. "The FBI is after us, the Dallas police, the Secret Service. It's only a matter of time before they hunt us down here."
"Well, where are we supposed to go?" Vanya glanced around as Klaus made his way downstairs.
"I have this yurt just outside Reykjavik," he announced. "We could totally lay low there.  Folks there are a little weird, but lovely."
"Hey, numbnuts," Five eyed him. "Hiding's not gonna make a difference here."
"The Commission will hunt us down wherever and whenever we go," Karina sighed.
"She's right. They'll never stop," Diego nodded.
That caused Five and Karina to slowly look at him in surprise.
"I'm sorry, since when are you an expert on the Commission?" Five crossed his arms defensively.
"Since I got back from there."
The two stared at him in shock. "What?"
"Yeah, they headhunted me, offered me a job. Full time with benefits, which I had to turn down," he responded.
Five couldn't hold back a forming smirk. "They headhunted you?" He scoffed. "The village idiot."
"Five! Be more sensible! Did they hurt you?" Karina looked at Diego in concern.
"I'm fine. Thanks Karina," he smiled at her and then glared at Five. "What, am I not allowed to be headhunted? Only the almighty Five needs to be in demand?"
"Diego, you're not Commission material, all right? Got an obstinate nature to ya," Five returned.
"Who do you think it was that figured out Vanya was the one that causes doomsday and stopped it? Me!"
Everyone scoffed or rolled their eyes.
"Hey!" Klaus interjected.
Diego bent down to Five's level. "That's who. I figured it all out on the Infinite Switchboard."
"You were on the Infinite Switchboard?" Five looked at him in surprise.
"Hell, yeah! I made that machine my bitch!" Diego boasted rather loudly. "Y'all need to recognize I got shit going on y'all don't even know about." He looked around.
"Oh, sorry. You've got things going on?" Allison shot.
"This isn't helpful," Luther muttered as he passed by.
"Look, I met the Résistance in their secret lair. All right? I went through orientation and I passed and I stopped doomsday," Diego remarked as Vanya went upstairs.
The others didn't notice however. They were arguing, of course.
"At least I wasn't busy playing with myself," Diego remarked.
"Can you dispense with the dick-measuring for five minutes?" Allison shot.
"Unless you can literally, 'cause Ben and I-" Klaus started.
"We don't have time for this," Luther cut him off.
"Yeah, the Feds could be here any minute," Karina added.
Allison nodded. "That's what I've been saying."
"I'm agreeing!" Luther was defensive.
Five eyed him. "Okay, calm down, Hairy-"
"Hey, it's King Kong. And I'm sick of your ass, okay?"
"Yeah, okay, you win," Diego mocked Luther.
"Guys, we need to move, okay? That is more important here. That is our only option," Luther retorted.
"We need to box those windows and stay here," Diego disagreed.
Vanya came back downstairs. "I'm leaving."
"What? To go where?" Allison stood up.
"Sissy's farm. Something's wrong with Harlan, and I need to help him," Vanya responded.
"Vanya, we need to stick together, okay? Now more than ever," Luther chimed in.
"That's why I'm telling you this. Whatever's going on with Harlan, I think I might've caused it."
"How?"
She sighed. "He drowned, and, uh, somehow I was able to bring him back to life. And now it's like we're connected."
"Wh-What does that even mean?" Luther glanced around in confusion.
"I don't know. I can't explain, but…I know that he needs my help," she sighed softly. "I need your help, too. I'm scared. And for the first time in my life, I don't wanna do it alone. I want my family by my side."
Everyone gazed at her quietly.
That was when Diego made the move. "Look, I'm sorry. We have other priorities right now."
"Diego's right. For once," Five added a bit reluctantly. "We need to make our stand here and now."
Vanya looked away, obviously let down. "Okay. I guess I'll see you when I see you." She left the room.
Karina glanced around at the siblings and shook her head. "I'm going after her," she announced.
"Rina! We can't. Not with everyone after us," Five stopped her and she turned around.
"Five, I'm sorry, but I can't just let her go off on her own like that. This probably isn't an easy decision for her either. I mean, put yourself in her shoes for a moment. Harlan's a young boy with frightening powers and you are the only one who can possibly help him control it. Wouldn't any of you want to help him and try to make things right?" Karina pointed out. Then she sighed. "Besides, either way we go, we're going down. So, I don't know about anyone else but, I might as well go down doing the right thing."
With that, she left the building as well before anyone could stop her. Vanya was in the car when Karina opened the door and slid into the front seat next to her.
"You know, my aunt and uncle used to own a farm," Karina casually began, smiling at a shocked Vanya. "I used to go horse back riding all the time when I was younger. The faster the horse went, the more I felt like I was soaring. Say, do Sissy and Harlan have any animals?"
"Karina, what are you-" Vanya was even more stunned when Klaus appeared.
"Hullo there ladies," he huffed as he slid inside next to Karina. "So, so, so…Ben, huh? Gone forever. Isn't he?"
Vanya was looking at him a bit sadly. "He traded his life for mine…while he saved the world in the process."
"Pfft," he scoffed. "Show-off. But did he…say anything about…me?"
Vanya nodded and Klaus looked intrigued.
"He wanted me to tell you that he was too scared to go to the light. It wasn't you that made him stay," she responded.
Klaus chuckled flatly. "Oh, that little shit-heel." He scoffed softly. "All these years, and I thought it was my fault that he didn't take his ticket to heaven." He laughed and then sighed when he looked down.
"Look, I'm sorry, but…you should get out, 'cause I need to-" Vanya started.
"Oh, no, I'm coming with. I can't let you and Karina face the unknown alone, right?" Klaus said as footsteps approached.
Diego and Allison slid into the backseats.
"Got room for two more?" Allison asked as the doors shut.
"What about the Commission?" Vanya looked back at them.
Diego sighed and glanced at Vanya and Karina. "Our dear sister-in-law was right. We might as well do some good before we die horribly."
"Whoo-hoo!" Klaus cheered as Karina smiled back.
"Oh!" Vanya jumped when she saw Five open the front door. "Five, you-you don't have to-"
"I know," he returned, looking at her. "You owe me one, sis." He looked at Karina and smiled softly, giving her a nod. Then he eyed Klaus. "You're taking up my seat next to my wife. Children ride in the back."
"Okay," Klaus didn't hesitate to slide over the front seat into the back row, quite literally.
Allison and Diego scrambled to make room.
"Whoa! Oh, Christ!" Allison muttered as Klaus grunted, plopping down.
Five slipped into the seat next to Karina, wrapping his arm around her. "In case you never knew this: you have a very convincing way with words, my darling."
"Good. I'm glad to hear that," she lightly joked and blushed when he kissed her cheek.
"Guys, I don't know what to say," Vanya looked at her family, touched by their support.
The trunk opened and Luther clumsily climbed in, making the car creak loudly and crunch some. The door slammed shut.
"Anyone makes a fat joke, and I'm outta here," Luther commented.
Vanya smiled and took off for the farm.
~ * ~
When they got to the farm, there was a huge snow storm swirling madly around in the sky. Energy crackled and sizzled. Lightning struck the barn.
"You think whatever's going on inside is causing the cold front?" Diego asked as everyone got out of the car.
"Well, the correlation is high," Five looked up at it.
"Sissy!" Vanya called out and the barn door opened. Sissy came racing out with a gun held high. "Sissy!" she rushed towards her.
"Get back!" Sissy yelled protectively. "All of you, just get the hell back!"
"Sissy! Hey! Hey! What's wrong?" Vanya was worried.
Sissy was panting some. "Carl."
"What did he do to you?"
"He's…He's dead," Sissy was breathing shakily now. "Harlan tossed him aside like a rag doll, same way you sent those policemen flyin'. What did you do to him?"
"No-"
"Vanya, what the hell did you do to my son?"
"Don't have time for this," Diego began to move forward.
"Where you think you're going?" Sissy aimed her gun at him.
"To help your son," he held his hand up disarmingly.
"Look, Sissy, I found my family. These are my brothers, my sister, and my sister-in-law," Vanya introduced them.
"Ma'am," Luther lifted a hand in greeting at Sissy.
"Were you lyin' to me the whole time?" Sissy questioned Vanya.
"Of course not. Look, I didn't know who I was. But I do now. And we are not the monsters that they say we are. We did not kill the president. We are not terrorists. We're not here to hurt anyone."
"Then…" Sissy paused softly. "Who are you?"
"The only one who can help Harlan," Vanya answered.
Sissy hesitated for a second before she nodded and everyone raced into the barn. Harlan was suspended in the air, jerking around and surrounded by a huge swirling surge of energy.
"Harlan?" Vanya yelled over the howling wind. "Harlan, it's Vanya!"
Harlan was gasping and twitching.
"Look, Harlan, I know you're really scared, but I can help you. I need you to listen to me, okay? Can you do that?"
Harlan continued gasping and a high-pitched tone resonated. Vanya began to glow as she went through the surge.
"Careful!" Five warned as everyone else watched anxiously.
Energy whooshed nearby, causing Klaus to go over to the door. He spotted two figures in the field in the distance.
"Uh…guys?" he spoke up. The others glanced his way.
"What?" Diego asked as he went over to his side, along with the others. "Ah, shit," he cursed.
"What, who are they?" Klaus wanted to know.
"One's the Handler, the other's Diego's girlfriend, Lila," Five answered.
"That's my ex-girlfriend," Diego corrected him instantly.
"What?" Klaus eyed him.
"You know what? Doesn't matter. They both look angry," Luther observed.
"Yeah. Our brother has that effect on people," Allison remarked.
"I'm gonna go find out what they want. You guys stay with Vanya and the kid," Five stepped out.
"I'm coming with you, too," Diego and Karina said in unison.
The three made their way out to the two.
The Handler chuckled. "I love the smell of that fresh country air, don't you, darling?" she asked Lila.
"Makes me want to vomit," Lila replied.
"What do you want?" Five got right to the point.
"To watch you and your pretty little blonde suffer," Lila seethed.
"What about me?" Diego spoke up.
"You're not even worth my wrath."
"Easy," the Handler chided. "We're here on official business."
"And what business is that?" Karina almost challenged.
"As the head of the Commission, I've decided to eliminate the criminals responsible for the assassination of the former board of directors," the Handler replied, causing Karina to exchange a look with Five.
"Yeah, right. We didn't kill the board," Diego remarked.
Five fidgeted some. "Uh, actually, Diego, that's not entirely accurate."
"You didn't tell them. Oh, Five. And Karina! I thought you would have known better to stop keeping big secrets from your family," the Handler mocked them.
"Five, Karina, what the hell did you two do?" Diego eyed them.
"What we had to to get our family home," Five replied.
"Until somebody reneged on our deal," Karina shot.
"Somebody wouldn't have reneged if somebodies could've met a simple deadline," the Handler shot back. "Alas."
"You set us up to fail," Five snapped.
"You set yourselves up to fail, friend. You and your wife and your brothers and sisters. Kinda the running theme of your little lives, isn't it?" the Handler laughed.
"Dude, I can't believe you and Karina killed the board of directors!" Diego exclaimed. "You have no idea how messed up the Commission is right now!"
That caught the Handler off-guard. "Messed up? Who's saying that?"
"Everybody. Christ, even the janitors think it's going to shit."
"That's not all they killed," Lila was shooting a death glare at Five and Karina.
"What are you talking about?" Five furrowed his brows.
"I never killed anyone," Karina added confusedly.
"Don't play dumb, you prepubescent pieces of shit."
"Enough. The point is, all of you are going to die today. Hmm?" the Handler was getting impatient now.
"Oh. Well, I don't like your chances. Seven of us, two of you," Diego challenged.
"You know, you're right. Let's change that," the Handler snapped her fingers.
Dozens upon hundreds of Commission Officers began to appear now. Diego and Five stepped back some as Five shoved Karina behind him.
"Oh, my God, Diego, why can't you just shut up for once in your life?" Karina muttered, clinging to Five's side.
The officers cocked their weapons into place. Five exhaled shakily, trying to calculate the odds of them making it out alive.
"So what do we do now?" Diego whispered.
"Well, we got two choices: fight and die now or run and die later. Either way, we're food for worms," Five replied honestly.
"Preference, doll?" Karina glanced at him.
"Wouldn't mind a few more minutes breathing air through the old windbags and spending a little more time with you, my love," he responded.
"Thanks, I'll be fine, too," Diego chimed in sarcastically.
"All right. Let's get this over with, shall we?" the Handler held up a red piece of fabric.
"Run!" Five yelled and the three fled the field.
The officers chased after them as rapid gunfire filled the air. They were ducking and avoiding the bullets as best as they could.
Diego grunted, barely missing a round. "We're not gonna make it!"
Five grabbed both him and Karina.
"What are you doing?" Diego shouted.
Suddenly they blinked out, reappearing near the house.
Diego stumbled some as Karina caught him. "Five, I think I'm gonna puke!" he exclaimed.
"No time!" Five remarked and the three raced behind the tractor, ducking for cover. Bullets struck the tractor, ricocheting off.
"You gotta blink us into the house, man!" Diego cried.
Five grabbed the two and tried to blink out, but his powers kept sputtering.
"What?!" Diego nearly shrieked.
"Shit, I'm out of fuel!" Five cursed himself out. "I'm too tired."
"Go! Both of you! I'll…I'll cover for you," Diego smacked Five.
"Diego, what are you-" Karina began.
"Go!" Diego raced out.
Five grabbed Karina's hand and yanked her to her feet as the two ran for the house. While Diego stopped most of the bullets, the two raced up the porch. Five yanked the door open and pushed Karina inside first. They slid under the table and he flung himself on top of her, shielding her. Bullets were still flying, glass was breaking, and the lights crazily flickered out.
Meanwhile outside, Vanya had joined the fight. She was flying above and sent a bright blue energy wave to take out the Commission Agents. The gunshots stopped as everyone slowly got up, wondering if this was the end and the fight was over with.
However, a glowing blue bubble encased Lila and the Handler. It dissolved as Lila reciprocated the same orb of energy as Vanya, flying up. She sent her own energy blast, sending everyone flying back. Five and Karina quickly moved from the window as Luther came crashing through the roof and into the living room.
"Luther, are you all right?" Karina asked as they hurried over to him.
"Oh, I think I swallowed my tongue," he rasped out.
"Luther, if you swallowed your tongue, you wouldn't be talking, you big moron," Five scoffed. "Come on, on your feet."
Luther groaned as he sluggishly got up with their help. "Hey, what the hell happened? What was that?"
"She must've redirected Vanya's energy wave," Karina glanced towards the window.
"Yeah, I know, but how?" Luther remarked.
Five glanced up as the chimney began to crumble. "Luther, Rina, watch out!" he shoved them out of the way as the bricks collapsed onto him and buried him.
"Five!" Karina screamed, racing over to the pile. "Five! No! Luther! Help me!" she began to panic.
"Five!" Luther began to try moving bricks.
Suddenly, Lila blinked in, chuckling when she saw them.
"What are you?" Luther slowly got to his feet as Karina scowled.
"Someone who wants to kill your brother," Lila responded coldly.
"Well, that's understandable. Diego can be a lot to handle," Luther admitted.
"Yeah, I was talking about Five."
"Him, too."
"And just for good measure, I'll just kill you too," Lila was glaring at Karina now.
Luther stepped in front of Karina. "But, unfortunately, they're family, so you're shit out of luck."
"Luther, wait!" Karina cried as he threw a punch.
Luther grunted, groaning when Lila caught his fist. He started grimacing as his leather glove creaked. "How is this possible?" he strained out and grunted.
"Gotta believe in yourself, big boy," she remarked before throwing him out of the house.
"Luther, no!" Karina cried.
"Luther!" Allison came running over to his side. "Luther!"
Lila glared back at Karina. "I'll be back for you and your pathetic excuse of a husband." She strode over to the hole in the wall. "Oi!" she caught Allison's attention. "Hi." She grinned.
Lila and Allison began to fight now as Karina went back to trying to unbury Five.
"Come on, love, where are you? I need you!" she was fighting desperately not to cry, scavenging through the pile. "Five, please, if you can hear me just say something or make a noise! Please!" she gasped when she looked up and saw Allison begin to choke. "Allison, no!" she exclaimed as Luther barely caught Allison.
Bricks began to shift as a groan came from beneath the rubble.
"Five!" Karina breathed a sigh in relief when his head slowly popped up. "Five, thank God!"
"Rina…" he coughed as she clumsily helped him to his feet.
"Lila! She-She-her powers! I-"
"Rina!" Five grabbed her by the shoulders. "I know, my love, I know. Are you okay, did she hurt you?"
Karina shook her head and he wiped her eyes gently.
"Okay. Let's go," he nodded, kissing her forehead comfortingly. He went over to the hole. "You looking for us?" he caught Lila's attention.
Lila saw him and scowled. "You little turd."
"Let's dance," Five blinked out.
The two blinked inside as Five caught Lila's fist and Karina ducked to avoid being kicked. Lila punched her back and she caught her other hand, shoving her back. Five threw another punch but Lila blinked to behind him. He whipped around and grunted when her fist collided with his face. He staggered back as Karina kicked Lila across the face and dodged a punch, kneeing her in the stomach.
"For the bloody Head of the Briefcase Division-" Lila punched Karina, shoving her into the nearest, standing wall. "You are remarkably good."
"What can I say, I had a good teacher," Karina spat, not forgetting how rather unfairly ruthless the Handler made her training sessions.
Five blinked in front of Lila but she punched him again and blinked out, reappearing on the counter. He inhaled sharply.
"Careful, now, or you are going to tire yourself out," she advised him mockingly.
"How are you doing this?" Five was breathless.
"Oh, anything that you can do, I can do better," Lila grabbed a nearby skillet and blinked out.
Five blinked out with Karina at the same time.
~ * ~
The three reappeared in the barn. Five saw Lila about to throw the skillet, so he blinked out with Karina. Lila turned and when they reappeared, she threw it. It hit Five clean in the head, causing him to shout and fall to the ground.
"Five!" Karina cried, whipping around to face Lila and punched her.
She staggered back, hitting her in the side. Karina yelped in pain, grabbing her hand and twisting it back.
"You little shit!" Lila blinked away and Karina stumbled some. Lila reappeared, tackling her to the ground and punching her.
Karina shouted, noticing her vision blur ever so slightly and her head start to pound relentlessly. Lila ended up kicking her in the ribs, causing Karina to curse loudly. She groaned in pain, clutching her stomach and curling up some. Before Five could make a move, Lila quickly put her foot on his throat, though he caught it just in time and struggled to stop her.
"Doesn't feel so good, does it?" Lila mocked him.
"Lila-" Karina wheezed out some.
"Oh, shut your mouth!"
"Eat shit and die!" Five choked out.
Lila cried out as he threw her off of him and she landed with a shout. Five groaned as he got up and he gently helped Karina to her feet.
"Come on. What are you waiting for? Let's finish this thing," Five readied himself, watching her angrily.
"No," she breathlessly whispered and sniffled some. "This isn't gonna be quick. For either of you. You two are going to suffer for what you did."
Five scoffed. "Lady, I got no idea what you're talkin' about."
"I never did anything to you," Karina added.
"Ronnie and Anita Gill," Lila spoke.
"Mean nothing to us," Five countered.
"1993, East London. You hog-tied them and you shot them in the head," Lila said to Five and looked at Karina next. "You, built the briefcase that sent him there. Guilty by association. If you hadn't made that bloody device, they would still be alive!"
Five paused, exchanging a look of realization with Karina. "The flower merchants," Five drew out quietly.
"They were your parents," Karina followed in a hollow voice.
"And they never did anything to anyone. They didn't deserve to die like that!"
Five remembered now. "You're right, all right? I killed them. But I killed a lot of people over the years. It was all just a job. All right?"
"And I didn't know anything about the mission. I made the briefcase because it was my job. All I knew was the time and the location. Not who," Karina added reasonably.
"What we did was never personal," Five finished.
Lila laughed bitterly. "'Never personal,' my ass. Yeah, I've killed. It's always, always personal."
"That's why you're not cut out to be an assassin."
"Bet your life on that?" Lila challenged, pulling out a dagger.
"You wanna blame someone? Blame the Handler, all right? She faked the kill order," Five told her, pushing Karina behind him protectively.
"Bullshit," Lila spat. "I saw the kill order and the briefcase instructions. AJ Carmichael ordered it, and you both carried it out."
"Lila, listen to what we're telling you, all right? The Handler gave Five the kill order and she gave me the briefcase blueprints," Karina tried to stay calm.
"She came on the job, which she'd never done before," Five continued. "You're Commission. You know execs never go on jobs, but that day in London, she was there. Ask yourself why."
"Stop trying to muddy the waters," Lila hissed.
"I never realized what she was up to at the time, but…now it all makes sense."
"What?"
"She never cared about your parents-" Five began and Karina chimed in in realization when he said, "She was looking for you."
"Why?" Lila barely made out in a whisper.
Diego suddenly came into the barn with the others. "'Cause you're one of us. The Handler stole you, Lila. Just like our asshоlе father took all of us."
"No. It's not the same thing," Lila argued.
"You're right. Because he didn't have our parents murdered," Diego tried to keep her calm. "Listen to me, Lila. You were born October 1, 1989, the same day as all of us."
"Stay back!" Lila yelled at the others started to surround her and everyone backed away.
"Hey! Hey, stop! Wait. Wait. Hey! Lila? Lila, stop," Diego ordered.
"I trusted you. I got you a job, I even introduced you to my mother, and then you took off on me," Lila accused.
"Because I needed to save the world!" Diego interrupted her. "She's using you, Lila. The Handler."
"You're wrong. She raised me. She loves me," Lila fought.
"Yeah, you know what? Love shouldn't have to hurt this much," Luther spoke up.
Lila looked at him and then mockingly gagged.
Luther frowned. "All right, I tried."
"He's right. We have to kill her," Five went near Lila.
"Hey! Five!" Diego shouted to him.
"Five, stop, just wait a minute," Karina caught his arm.
"I got it," Diego reassured his brother and then looked back at Lila. "Hey, Lila. Truth? She's dangerous. And you're scared of what she'll do with all that new power. That's why you dragged me to the Commission. Because I know what it's like to love dangerous people." He was gazing at her now. "Difference is…" He glanced around at his family. "They love me back."
"Shut up," Lila quietly choked out, holding her knife up at him.
"The only thing she loves is power. Now, the minute she can't use you, she will turn on you, and deep down, I know you know that."
"You don't know me, Diego."
"Don't I?" he was standing in front of her now, looking down at her and she was gazing up at him through watery eyes. "I know that we can be your family…if you just let us."
Lila glanced around at the Hargreeves surrounding her. The moment was ruined however when an automatic gunfire went off, shooting everyone down as Lila dove out of the way.
"Diego, no," Lila choked out as she rushed to his side.
The Handler glanced around triumphantly and strolled into the barn. Lila was sniffling over Diego's body.
"Aww," the Handler almost mocked.
Lila sat back on her knees blankly. "It's true, what Five and Karina said, isn't it?"
"Darling, I need to know that we can get past this, be a happy family again. Hmm?"
Lila looked at her, slowly standing up. "They're my real family." She went over to stand in front of the Handler. "Do you even love me?"
The Handler merely gazed at her and just when Lila was about to stab her, the Handler shot her down as well.
"Que será, será," the Handler hummed over her. Soft, pained gasps made her turn and look to see who remained: Five. "Oh, good. You're still alive." The Handler walked over to his side. "Lucky you. You got to see how this all played out."
The Handler raised her gun to kill him, but another gunshot rang out. The Handler gasped sharply and fell to the ground, dead.
Five felt the agonizing pain of several bullets slowly taking his life away. Every breath got harder to inhale and every blink made his eyelids heavier. His siblings were already dead, surrounding him. And Axel was looming over Five, the head of his gun pointing down at him.
If talking wasn't feeling like a heavy burden, Five would have dared him to pull the trigger. His mind was racing enough, wondering if this was the end of the Umbrella Academy. If this was truly where all his efforts and plans on ending apocalypses and saving his family landed him.
Five swallowed a lump in his throat as his eyes flicked to his left. And that's where he saw her.
Karina.
Five wanted to believe she was just asleep. She was just resting. He knew better. Losing his family was one thing. Losing his significant other was another.
He looked back up at Axel, feeling energy from his determination and desperation to save his family build within him. Familiar blue light began to form in his hands. Voices and memories of his siblings echoed in the back of his mind.
"This doesn't have to mean the end. We can use my ability to time travel," Five told his siblings in 2019, in the opera house.
"You got us stuck here in the first place," Luther accused him when he was at the bar.
He remembered himself and Karina fall through the portal between 1963 and 2019.
"Start small. Seconds, not decades," Sir Reginald Hargreeves himself, advised.
"You were always eager for more. More and more. Insatiable, really. Use that hunger to save the world," Karina told him when they were planning on escaping The Commission.
Five could slowly hear her now over all the other voices. And he clung to that.
"If you go, so do I. We're in this together. We vowed to do things together," her voice continued to echo.
"I'm right here. I'm not leaving you, I promise."
"I trust you more than anyone."
"I believe in you."
"Show me how we're good. Because, I think we could do some good."
"Home became a person and not a place anymore when I met you."
"Let's go save the world, my darling."
Five was desperately grappling onto those memories. Latching onto anything that kept him grounded, because in truth, Karina kept him grounded. He saw the events around him in an almost rewind motion. The Handler's death reversed, his siblings deaths reversed, Karina's death reversed, and everything reversed.
Five felt himself running back through time, literally. He got to the other side of the barn where he cut off his powers. Everyone was alive again.
Diego was standing in front of Lila, looking down at her and she was gazing up at him through watery eyes. "I know that we can be your family…if you just let us."
The moment that the Handler appeared, Five grabbed her gun and pointed it at her. She gasped, slowly holding her hands up in surrender.
"It's true, isn't it?" Lila asked her. "What Five and Karina said."
The Handler looked away, wondering how to overpower the group.
"Answer me!" Lila snapped. "Is it true?"
"Well-" the Handler began but Axel appeared from behind and shot her down.
She grunted softly and fell to the ground, dead. Everyone was horrified as Lila eyed the lone briefcase. She lunged for it.
Luther gasped. "The case!"
"No!" Diego tackled him and they landed with a grunt.
Luther groaned as Lila blinked out with the briefcase. Five cocked his weapon, looking at Axel closely. Everyone evenly watched Axel before Five held his hand up and dropped the gun.
"Enough," Five spoke.
Axel glanced around the room. "Enough," he returned in Swedish, tossing his gun and leaving the barn.
"I almost had her. Why the hell did you stop me?" Luther glared at Diego.
"Because…I love her," Diego strained out a smile as they got to their feet.
"Who the hell was that guy?" Klaus pointed to where Axel left.
"Vanya! Help!" Sissy's voice cried.
Vanya gasped. "Harlan!" she raced out.
Everyone exchanged a glance and then raced down to where they were.
"Sissy?" Vanya called out.
Harlan was cowering on the ground, surrounded by yet another swirling surge of energy.
"Harlan? Harlan! Whatever it is I gave you, I can take it back, okay?" Vanya joined him as everyone outside watched anxiously. "We just, we need to stop this."
Harlan whimpered softly. Vanya put her hands on the boy and energy began whooshing. Soon a bright orb of blue and a small wave rippled through the air, breaking through the surge and ending it. Vanya gasped, falling back. She was panting as she looked at Harlan, who was back to normal now. He looked at Sissy.
She gasped softly and raced over to her son. "Oh, baby. Oh, baby. Oh!" she hugged him tightly, sobbing gratefully.
Vanya looked up at her family with a smile.
A familiar whoosh sounded outside and Diego, Five, and Karina went to see who it was. Luckily, it was only Herb and Dot.
"Herb. Dot," Five greeted when they met in the middle.
"Hi," Dot greeted as Herb chuckled.
"Sup, Herbie?" Diego exchanged a high five/slap/fist bump greeting.
"Hey! My man," Herb chuckled.
"All good?" Diego asked.
"Good to see you guys," Karina smiled.
Dot lit up. "Karina! Good to see you, my dear." She hugged her tightly.
"If it isn't the always lovely Mrs.," Herb shook her hand next. "I haven't seen you in a while."
"Hi Herb. It has been some time," Karina smiled as Five wrapped his arm around her waist, pressing a gentle kiss into her hair.
Herb blew out some air and sighed. "I can't believe it. Is she…?"
"Really dead this time?" Five finished.
"Oh, yeah," Diego confirmed.
"Oh," Herb whispered.
"Now that the Handler's gone, what happens at Commission?" Karina inquired curiously.
Herb hesitated to answer.
"Just tell them!" Dot urged him.
"Eh-" Herb relented. "Well…we need to elect a new board of directors. But, until then, I, um…I've been voted in as acting chairperson."
Dot squealed softly and clapped happily.
"No shit. Congrats, Herbie," Diego told him as Five and Karina smiled from the news. "That's huge!"
"I'm so goddamn nervous!" Herb admitted.
"You'll do fine," Five reassured him warmly.
"Oh, thank you."
"Herb, we need a favor," Five continued.
"Oh, sure, anything."
"A briefcase. Get back home, where we belong."
Herb glanced around at the field. "Take your pick."

Later that night while everyone was saying their goodbyes and making last minute checks to know that everything would be set right, Five found Karina sitting off near a tree.
"Peaceful isn't it?" he asked, sitting down beside her.
Karina nodded, looking down at her necklace. She was fiddling with it thoughtfully.
"Hey," Five took her hand, stopping her. He looked at her. "What's going through that pretty head of yours?"
She sighed. "Nothing. It's nothing."
"It looks like something to me. You know you can tell me anything, right?"
"It'll probably sound insane," Karina scoffed under her breath.
"Insane?" Five repeated. "My darling, you managed to rally up my siblings in a matter of minutes when it has taken me hours or days. Believe me, you are the most sane person out there."
"Jealous, are we?" she eyed him teasingly.
He laughed airily. "No. Impressed. And proud. Besides, it proves my point. If they don't listen to me, at least they listen to you."
"I think I was a little too harsh," she admitted.
"Harsh? That was the nicest, "suck it up assholes", speech we've ever gotten. You rightfully put us in our place and look where it got us. We won," Five smiled.
Karina softly smiled back and looked down again.
"Rina," he tilted her chin up to face him. "Tell me what's troubling you."
Karina sighed. "It's Lila and her situation with the Handler. You know, I always wondered why she kept me as a kid. And now I seriously want to know why. I didn't have any powers. I wasn't made of magic. I'm just…me. Ordinary, local me. I didn't have anything special to offer. So, why did she take me from the one thing I ever knew as family?"
Five looked at her sadly. He bit his lip. Here he was, always used to having the answers. But this one? Unfortunately he didn't. And that hurt immensely, because he knew deep down Karina craved to have that answer.
"Oh, my love, I wish I knew," he sighed softly. "I'm sorry."
Karina nodded blankly. "Me, too."
"You know, if you want to see the better side of it…we would have never met," he tried to cheer her up. "I wouldn't have found you."
"I know. I am grateful to have you," Karina smiled at him.
"As am I," he pulled her into him in a tight, loving embrace. "And I never want to lose you. Ever."
She relaxed into his arms, feeling him kiss her forehead. She wondered and worried why exactly he said that, but, she didn't linger on it.
Of course she had no idea she died and he rewound time after seeing her dead body next to him.
"Hey! Lovebirds! Let's get out of here!" Diego called to the couple.
Five grinned, getting to his feet and helping Karina up to hers. He gave her forehead another kiss, making her laugh before he blinked them over. Everyone huddled up as Luther exhaled.
"Everyone ready?" Five looked around.
"Let's do it, yeah," Luther nodded.
"Okay."
They all took one another's shoulders.
"Wait!" Klaus exclaimed. He hurried over to grab a cowboy hat hanging from the porch railing.
"Fifty bucks if we leave him here," Diego whispered to Five and Five shot him a look.
Klaus ran back to the others and nodded. Everyone braced themselves as Five activated the briefcase. It clicked open and with a bright blue flash, took all of the Hargreeves out of 1963, Dallas.
~ * ~
April 2, 2019
They all reappeared in the entry hall of the Hargreeves Mansion. Everyone gasped, stumbling back.
Allison sighed, panting as she looked around.
"Oh, good God," Luther choked out.
They were all panting and groaning.
"Wh-What day is it?" Klaus wanted to know.
Five grabbed a newspaper from the table. "April 2, 2019. Day after the apocalypse," he announced.
"Wait, so we stopped it," Allison said.
"My God, it's over?" Vanya was elated from that.
"Did we…actually succeed at something?" Klaus whimpered.
"That's incredible!" Karina exclaimed.
Everyone laughed triumphantly.
"Oh!" Klaus cried happily.
"All right!" Luther cheered.
"I don't know about you guys, but I need a drink," Klaus announced.
Luther nodded. "Yes. In fact, I need several."
"I'm in. I'm in," Diego and Vanya echoed.
"I should go find Claire," Allison spoke up.
"Oh, come on, one drink," Luther took her over to them.
"No…" she sighed and ran some to catch up with the others.
Klaus began making the drinks as the others wandered into the living room. Diego slowly made his way to the fireplace, though he was eyeing it in confusion.
"Why is there a painting of Ben over the mantelpiece?” he asked.
Everyone stared up at the portrait in confusion.
"I knew you'd show up eventually," a hauntingly familiar male voice to their left sounded.
The Hargreeves whipped around to see a very alive Sir Reginald Hargreeves standing at the other fireplace.
"Dad," Diego recognized him softly.
Everyone stared at Dad in disbelief and caution.
"You're alive," Luther followed.
"Why shouldn't I be?"
"Yeah. Y-Yeah, you're right. I'm…I'm just happy that we're home and…together again," Luther corrected himself.
The silhouettes of five people, along with a floating red cube appeared on the landing above.
Down below, Ben Hargreeves himself made his way in, to their shock. He stared at the newcomers coldly and angrily.
"Dad, who the hell are these assholes?" he demanded.
"Shit," the Umbrella Academy collectively cursed.

Step {Back} In Time
Pairing: Five Hargreeves x Fem! OC
Author's Note: Hello and welcome. This is my season two fic (and sequel to Time and Chase). I will be posting daily. *Please note that I am well aware that Elliot Page portrays Viktor, but due to season two being before his transition, that is why his character is still Vanya. I am not deadnaming him and I sincerely hope I don't come across as such. I will transition when I write season three.*
Warnings: cursing.

The Seven Stages
~ * ~
On April the 1st, 2019, the Earth was destroyed in a cataclysmic event.
Billions of people were wiped out in a matter of minutes.
Ironically, the seven survivors of the apocalypse were the very family members who brought it on.

Five was pacing around wildly, Klaus was still on the ground, Luther was near the dumpster, and Karina was leaning against the wall with her arms crossed.
"Now what?" Luther questioned.
"Now nothing, Luther, all right? Make your peace with God," Five responded.
"What? What about Allison and Vanya?"
"Screw them both, all right? They should have been here!"
Klaus groaned. "What about Diego? He's quite a responsible young man, no?"
Five kicked at the dumpster with a frustrated noise, sighing.
"Something must've happened to them. Otherwise, they would have been here," Karina pointed out.
"Screw Diego, all right? Screw everybody!" Five pretty much yelled. "I was better off on my own with Rina in the apocalypse!"
"Five!" she scolded him.
"Come on," Luther eyed him.
"You know what, Luther? It's every sibling for himself now. How 'bout that?" Five commented.
"Five…" Karina drew out before he threw the door to Elliot's place open and slammed it shut behind him.
Klaus sighed and whimpered, "Did Five just get meaner?"
"Klaus, go check on Allison, okay? Make sure she's okay. Find the others and we'll meet back here. We'll handle Five," Luther instructed, glancing at Karina.
With that, the two of them went inside and found him going upstairs.
"Hey! Five, doomsday is still coming. We gotta think of a new plan," Luther chased after him.
"Don't you get it, Luther? It's over, all right? We're already dead!" Five retorted.
"Then where are you going?"
"I'm going to do the unthinkable."
"The hell is that supposed to mean?" Karina questioned.
Five sighed. "I was really hoping it wouldn't come to this." He went through another door, taking Karina with him.
"Come to what, Five?" Luther echoed as Five shut the door in his face. "Five. Karina!" He heard the door lock. "Five! Come to what? Five!"

Luther was asleep on the couch as Five and Karina slipped into the kitchen. Five opened the fridge, softly rattling it in the process.
Luther stirred from his sleep. "Five?" he grunted, clumsily getting to his feet. "Shit," he muttered, going over into the kitchen. "Five? Five, what…" He paused, seeing him chug down a huge container of water. "You okay?"
Five gulped down the rest and gasped heavily, putting the container away. "I'm gonna need to be hydrated." He sighed, closing the door.
"Hydrated?" Luther repeated, watching Karina hand a bottle of baby powder to Five. "What's with the baby powder?"
"It'll help with the itching," Karina replied casually.
"What itching? There's itching? What the hell is going on here?" Luther fired off, before realization hit him. "You do have a plan."
Five exhaled sharply. "Well, it's a desperation move, but…since our brain-dead siblings are incapable of meeting a simple deadline, we got no choice."
"No choice about what?" Luther frowned.
"We have to find ourselves," Five flicked his watch open and then shut it after checking the time. "We just arrived in Dallas fifteen minutes ago."
"Should I be worried about you two?"
"Luther, if you recall, I was sent to 1963 on a job by the Commission to make sure the president was assassinated. And I brought Rina with me," Five explained.
"Oh! So, wait, your old selves are out there," Luther understood.
"Precisely," Karina nodded.
"What, just walking around Dallas?"
"Walking around Dallas with a briefcase that can get us home," Five answered.
"Oh, my God. Five, Karina, you're both geniuses!" Luther beamed.
"However, there are three significant problems with this plan," Karina interjected.
"Problem number one: I am a trained assassin, arguably the most dangerous assassin in the space-time continuum. If I know me, I'm not going to react kindly to bumping into myself," Five started the explanation. "Problem number two: Rina appears later on at the site of the assassination so, she'll be there, too-"
"-Although we both agreed that I stay as far away as possible-" Karina cut in.
"But she is still coming with me…unless otherwise," Five finished. "Problem number three, and this is the real fly in the ointment here: you're not supposed to exist in close proximity to yourself in the same timeline."
"The side effects can be disastrous," she agreed.
"Side effects? What sort of side effects?" Luther frowned.
"Well, according to Commission Handbook Chapter 27, subsection 3b, the seven stages in paradox psychosis are…" Five began to count them off, "Stage one: denial, two: itching, three: extreme thirst and urination, four: excessive gas, five: acute paranoia, six: uncontrolled perspiration, and seven: homicidal rage."
"Homicidal rage?" Luther repeated.
"Yeah," Karina sighed.
Luther grimaced. "Jeez, I don't know. This maybe isn't such a good idea."
"It's a Hail Mary. But what choice do we got, Luther?" Five asked him.
"I don't know, you already seem a bit squirrelly if I'm being honest."
"Look, Luther, I'm gonna need you to help us get through this one, all right?" Five took him by the shoulders. "We…We need a spotter."
"A spotter?"
"Yeah," Karina nodded.
"What is that? Like, a wingman?" Luther was confused.
"In case the paradox psychosis gets too severe, I need you to help me stay on task, all right? And I need you to make sure that Rina doesn't get too close," Five looked at him. "So, whatever happens, whatever I say, we need to get that briefcase. Okay?"
"Okay."
"Okay. Luther, come on," Five took off.
"Right," Luther muttered.

The three arrived at a bar where they could find older Five. Five peered through the entrance as the other two slipped in.
"Well, there I am," Five saw older him at the bar.
"Why don't we just grab the briefcase and run?" Luther suggested.
"Luther, I would never let that happen. We're trained to guard these briefcases with our lives and plus, not going to lie, if I came back to the briefcase division without a briefcase, Rina would kill me," Five responded.
"A bit of an outlandish accusation there, doll, but yeah," Karina agreed, leaning on the door with her arms crossed.
"Right," Luther slowly nodded.
"Plus, it's the inherent paradox where this gets tricky," Five continued. "I'm endangering my existence just being in the room with myself."
"Huh? What do you mean?"
"Luther, try to keep up," Five huffed.
"If old Five and I don't travel back to 2019 like we're supposed to, the whole thing unravels itself. We cease to exist. You got it?" Karina explained simply.
"I get you," Luther replied.
"So our best chance is to talk with him, to reason with him," Five said next. "He'll understand. Trust me. I know myself better than, uh…better than I know myself." He suddenly scratched the back of his neck.
"Oh, here we go," Karina muttered as Luther pointed to him, "You just itched your neck. That's stage two of paradox psychosis!"
"No, I didn't. I didn't itch my neck," Five shot down.
"Denial is stage one," Luther and Karina remarked in unison.
"I am fine, okay? Let's stay on task, shall we?" Five was about to walk off, but Luther stopped him.
"Wait!"
"What?" Five eyed him.
"Maybe I should go first," Luther suggested.
Five furrowed his brows. "Why?"
"Well, you'll most likely freak him out," Karina caught on. "Bumping into your own tiny doppelgänger?"
Luther nodded. "He will lose his shit. Just let me break the ice."
"Okay. Okay," Five breathed deeply.
Luther exhaled slowly and went over to older Five. Younger Five watched them closely, alternating between fidgeting with Karina's hand or pacing around.
"Relax, things are going to be okay," Karina calmed him down.
"You know, last time we thought that, the world was ending. Twice. Twice? Three times? You know what, I can't keep count anymore."
"I'm just going to blame this on the psychosis," she muttered.
Just then, Luther glanced over at younger Five and he took a breath, revealing himself. Karina subtly peeked around, seeing the two Fives staring at one another.
"Hey there, stranger," Five said.
Everyone was now awkwardly sitting around the table. Both Fives were staring one another down intensely. Luther and Karina were on either side, watching them closely.
Luther sighed. "Well…this is nice, isn't it? The four of us, together like this."
"No," both Fives and Karina answered.
"Somebody explain to me how it is I'm having a pint of Guinness with my younger self and my younger self's wife," adult Five said.
"Older, actually. I'm you, just 14 days older," younger Five corrected him tensely.
"I have pubic hair smarter than you," adult Five retorted. "How's that possible?"
"I can explain," younger Five started the summary. "You see, one hour from now, on the grassy knoll, before the president is killed, you and Rina break your contract with the Commission. We already know you're both thinking about it. All those years in the apocalypse, we never stopped worrying about our families."
"Well, today, you two are going to do something about it," Karina continued. "Today, you are going to attempt to time travel forward to 2019."
Younger Five jumped back in. "However, you are going to screw up the jump and end up in this twip of a body, trapped forever, small, pubescent. Same goes with Rina, because you screwed her up, too."
"Okay," adult Five suddenly passed out a bit of gas. "Even if I was to believe you and once Rina knows about this, what are we supposed to do about it, not jump?"
Younger Five shook his head. "No, no. We need you to jump. If you two don't jump, we cease to exist. What we need from you is to jump correctly."
"I'm listening," adult Five was deeply intrigued now.
"The first time through, I got the calculation wrong. That's how we ended up in these bodies. But now, I know the correct calculation."
"What is it?"
"I'll be glad to tell you…in exchange for that briefcase you're holding under the table," younger Five pointed to it.
"Yeah, yeah, so you and Karina go back to 2019, as planned, but this time with the right math, so you remain a full-grown man and Karina remains a full-grown woman," Luther summed up.
"In exchange, we get that briefcase that you no longer need," Karina continued.
"Timeline restored, paradox resolved. Everyone goes on existing happily ever after," younger Five finished.
"That's quite a bit to take in," adult Five admitted.
"What do you think?" younger Five questioned.
Adult Five thought for a moment. "I think…I need to piss." He got up and took the briefcase with him to the bathroom.
Younger Five and Karina watched him leave.
"Oh," Luther glanced at his brother. "Well, besides the flop sweat, I think that went pretty well, am I right?" He started dabbing sweat away.
"No, no, there's something…" Five waved him away. "Something doesn't feel right about this."
"What…What do you mean?" Luther glanced at him.
"I don't trust him," Five responded.
"But he's you."
"Exactly," Five and Karina answered.
Luther glanced at the two and got up.
"Whoa, where are you going?" Five asked.
"To talk to him," Luther shrugged casually and took off.
Karina sighed, taking a sip of her drink. "You think that's going to work?"
"I'm going to make it work," Five returned.
"Well, good luck with that," she glanced at him. "Are you sure you don't want me there when we get to the…next place?"
"Yeah. I'll be fine."
She merely hummed in thought, wiping some more sweat off his face. "I guess you're right. One person under psychosis is enough."
"I'm fine."
"Whatever you say, doll."
Soon, Luther and adult Five returned. The two looked at them expectantly.
"We good?" younger Five eyed his adult self.
"We're good," Luther grinned.
"You got a deal," adult Five stated. "We gotta hurry. Kennedy's en route. Less than an hour until showtime."
"Why are you so anxious to get going all of a sudden?" younger Five stood up, staring daggers at him.
"Relax. You're getting paranoid," older Five scoffed as they both twitched some.
"Oh, am I?" younger Five challenged as they both passed gas.
"Okay, let's roll," Karina cut them off, exhaling and leading the way out.
