Secret Sanders pieces were revealed so I can share the fic I wrote for @anders-did-nothing-wrong’s OC Eliza Hawke and Anders post battle. It’s always such a fun challenge to write other folks characters and I love a Hawke <3

Summary: Anders hates letting other people heal him, but he doesn't really have a choice when he nearly passes out on top of Hawke after a fight.

“Hey, take it easy.” Hawke barely caught Anders by the elbow as he slipped on the slick cavern floor. That wasn’t like him at all.

Usually so confident on his feet, Anders held onto her tight. “I think… oh no.” He leaned into her harder and Hawke had to brace her legs to support his lanky frame over her broad shoulders.

“What? Are you hurt?” Her eyebrows pinched together with concern. She had been too busy cutting down the bandits with her staff blade and swaths of fire to see him get injured. She didn’t even see him slow down until she was picking through the pockets of fallen men for whatever paltry coin they had. Up close, supporting his weight she could see how pale his skin looked, even in the dim light.

He planted his staff firmly in the ground to hold himself up, but sweat slicked his palm in hers and he started to tremble. A raspy breath cut its way from his chest - a wet, cut off gurgle that turned Hawke’s stomach. Death lay all around them, but an overwhelming smell of rank mold filled her nostrils as he wavered in her arms.

His eyes went unfocused and Hawke had only a breath of a moment to get her body under his before his legs gave out. "Oh -" He held tight to her shoulders and searched her face with unseeing eyes. "My arm."

He watches her go reluctantly, the soft sway of her hips, the sad sheen to her eyes before she turns. It aches, swallowing the words to call her back. His hands twitch at his sides. When she’s out of earshot, he takes it out by slamming the door. She wants him. That’s the worst thing. Her kisses would be soft and sweet, her hands gentle, her words understanding, her bed warm. She’s more than he deserves and the life he’s always wanted, dangling torturously in reach. Again and again, she forces him to hold back. He doesn’t want to. He wants to have her against the walls of the clinic, wants to hold her at night in her new Hightown bed. He wants to buy her roses, to watch her in the flickering firelight. Her fireplace or a burning building? his mind jabs. That’s why he has to stay away. That’s why he’ll only hurt her. You don’t deserve her. You’ll only hold each other back. The clinic is empty now and he sinks to the ground, letting his head fall into his hands. He wants to be the man she sees when she smiles. He doesn’t think he can be.

I know that Hawke being average and unspecial in combat is a popular headcanon but I don't feel like that makes sense for a mage Hawke, or at least for my mage Hawke who happens to be a blood mage and is able to not only resist possession but also hide the fact that he's a blood mage from most people for years.

That's not to say he has some rare, unique ability, he just worked very hard on improving over the years + he had good teachers (Malcolm, Merrill, Anders).

I'm curious if anyone else's Hawke is actually pretty great in combat.
