I’m gonna link the whole thing because I just watched this in full for the first time and it is absolutely amazing. Something that you definitey couldn’t tell just from shorter clips is how truly and utterly devastated everybody looks.
And I get it. I can’t even imagine how I would feel having known Townes all my life if it’d only been a few months since I lost him. But I don’t have to imagine it, as it’s written all over the faces of some of the best artists in the history of country music who all gathered to pay tribute to someone who was the definition of irreplaceable.
I wished they showed Susanna more - honestly she should have been on that stage with the rest of them - especially when they performed Heavenly Houseboat Blues - but just seeing her there makes me cry. As does Guy clearly trying to be stoic when he’s suffering more than almost everyone else in the room. This is all just incredibly beautiful and moving.

Song Review: Willie Nelson and Friends - “On the Road Again” and “Happy Birthday” (Live, April 30, 2023)
Just when it seems the world can’t possibly use another version of “On the Road Again,” Willie Nelson releases an “On the Road Again” the world didn’t know it needed.
Recorded April 30, 2023, at the Hollywood Bowl with a bunch of friends - the Avett Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Warren Haynes, Jamey Johnson, Lyle Lovett, the Lumineers, Lukas Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Jack Johnson, Rosanne Cash, Beck and Charley Crockett among them - and paired with “Happy Birthday,” this iteration is full of irresistible joy and wobbly harmony.
Despite the number of singers and players, Nelson, who turned 90 that day, remains in charge, singing the words strongly and coaxing yet another behind-the-beat solo from his trusty sidekick, Trigger. Everyone sings along lustily before it careens to a close and a raucous “Happy Birthday” emerges in its wake.
The cut follows Avetts’ take on “Pick up the Tempo” and Dave Matthews’ performance of “Funny How Time Slips Away” from “WIllie Nelson 90: Live at the Hollywood Bowl,” which will be released Dec. 15 in audio and video formats.
Grade card: Willie Nelson and Friends - “One the Road Again” and “Happy Birthday” (Live - 4/30/23) - A+

A night on the town
Sharon and I made the 35-mile drive to elegant Savannah Friday night where we ate seafood chowder and grilled salmon at the Crystal Beer Parlor, moseyed through the city’s lush town squares, then went to a Lyle Lovett concert at the Johnny Mercer Theatre.
Mercer - composer of American-songbook gems like “Moon River” and “Days of Wine and Roses” - is, of course, Savannah’s favorite son. He was born in Savannah in 1909 and grew up in the shadows of the live oaks.
As for Lyle Lovett ... he’s been part of our household songbook for decades. His “ Large Band” is now his “Acoustic Group” but it’s still Lyle, with his unique take on new-wave country/Western swing/Texas blue-grass ...
The beer was cold, the food was good, the show was brilliant.

Lyle Lovett & His Large Band performing "Pants Is Overrated" on Austin City Limits.

Pants Is Overrated
Singwriter: Lyle Lovett
Oh, the nighttime air was fairly breezin'
Well, it was cold but not quite freezin'
So I looked around to find my trousers
And this voice inside my head grew louder
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Yes, yes
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
I'd have never made it out that window (out the window)
If I'd even put just one leg in though
But as it was the circumstance
I gladly lost my favorite pants
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Yes, yes
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
My people from across the pond
They hail from Scotland and beyond (hey, yeah, yeah, hey)
Where sheep make wool for socks and shirts
And grown men run around in skirts
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Yes, yes
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
See the little sheepies big and fat
Standing on the hillside
Standing in the meadow
See the little sheepies big and fat
They're making me a sweater
They're making me a hat
Lord Jesus knew just what to wear (oh, yes, he did, yes, he did)
Oh, to live a life in desert air (ooh)
He walked the earth in poor man's shoes
And sang this ninth beatitude
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Yes, yes
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
And now as I sit here in my jeans
I think about what this all means
And children come into this world
Without a stitch on boy or girl
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Yes, yes
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Yes, yes
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Yes, yes
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Pants is overrated
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes
