so… since youve finished the masterpiece of pirate!au, are there any other au realms you want to conquer?
I freakin loved Not Wholly Evil and think you would just kill a hades/persephone (or any mythology au, regency au or just an ol plain fantasy world au.
I cant wait to see what you do next! It made my day when you updated the fic and i got to follow these characters. The whole world was built out and thoughtful which lent it self to so many cool nuances in the writing. I just reread and loved it even more. Thanks for sharing your gift!
thank you so much for enjoying the fic!!! i would not be able to share if there was no one there to read it after all so yeah, all the love is very much appreciated 😭
and I really loved creating this world, in general aus have always been my favourite and I do have a few in the works already (for a few months really lol).
The one I am currently trying to work on is a modern!au, that will be a bit simpler and just a cutesy one shot hopefully
but I also have 2 more elaborate "historic" aus planned that go more in the direction of Not Wholly Evil, especially as they are both apart of what I had originally planned as a 7k follower celebration. I do not know how long these fics will be until I properly start writing them, but they might be anything between a one shot or a new series. I'm also not sure which one I will write first. will probably let people vote on it once i post the modern au, but these are the premises:
REGENCY au - 1810's England - viscount's daughter!reader x stable boy!eddie. forbidden romance. think Jane Austen and Bridgerton vibes.
Wild West au - 1850's - I called it cowboy!au, but gunslinger/outlaw!Eddie is much more accurate. inspo: Back to the Future 3, but also just spaghetti westerns in general

AAAAAA The dirty dancing au so true, I don’t see Eddie as a dancer either tbh but I can’t stop thinking about Eddie being determined to do the Lift with you
HUNGRY EYES ─ E. MUNSON
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𖥻 pairing: eddie munson x reader. 𖥻 warnings: this is part of my dirty dancing!au, but can be read as a stand-alone. bad grammar. suggestiveness? not proofread.
💭 liv's thoughts: okay, so this might have turned out bigger than expected because i was SO excited to write it lmao (it's 1.4k words) so i'm posting it as a one-shot :D did i use jason as the annoying grandson? yeah i totally did (because i couldn't think of anybody else)
DO NOT INTERACT WITH THIS WORK IF YOU'RE UNDER 16.

As you emerged from the water, it wasn't difficult to notice just how exasperated Eddie looked. Lips pressed together and cheeks slightly puffed as he held back the air only to let it out in an annoyed (and loud) sigh. He feels like he might be on the verge of tears, about to cry his pent-up frustration out. Eddie is not the most patient person in the world, and even though he tries to exercise this virtue, he often finds himself failing and this was one of these unsuccessful attempts.
You don't blame him. You've been doing this for hours, after all, and even though time had passed quickly, it was still tiring. Your fingers were wrinkled and you felt your legs ache, knees buckling just by standing up straight, and you were pretty sure that there will be bruises on your hips from Eddie's vicious grip. At least the lake's water was refreshing and enough to cool your head from the frustration you felt from the failed lifting tries.
It was way simpler in your head.
"Eddie, it's fine! We almost got it!" you argue, trying to motivate him to keep going, even though you knew that he wouldn't listen to you. And he didn't. Less than a second later, his hands were going through his wet hair (that made him look like a wet dog, cute) as he let out another big sigh.
"We've been trying for ages, Y/N! I can't even hold you for longer than two seconds. You must be tired of getting so much water up your nose, by now."
Even though the statement made you let out a snicker, you couldn't help but roll your eyes at his hopelessness. You may have been doing this for quite some time now, yes, but your endless rehearsals have paid off a lot; sometimes, you couldn't even believe that Eddie went from someone who barely knew how to move their hips, and didn't have any idea of how to walk with his long legs, to fucking John Travolta in Grease.
"I mean, if you keep thinking that we won't be able to do it, we won't," you stated the obvious, with your eyebrows raised. "So I might as well leave now, since you can't hold me for more than one second apparently".
Quoting him, you started to walk away. Slowly, of course, since the water prevented you to move fast, like you wanted to… you know, for drama effect. That gave Eddie enough time to hold your arm, stopping you from going any further, and guiding you to your original spot.
Facing each other, maybe even closer now, he muttered, "It's two seconds, actually. 'm sorry, okay? I think it's just my spaghetti arms".
"Might be, yeah."
You two share a knowing smile, remembering the countless times where you called him that during dance practice, telling him over and over again that he was supposed to lock his frame and, for 'fuck's sake, straighten your posture!'. The inside reference couldn't pass by unnoticed, and his big brown eyes showed you that he was delighted to know that it didn't. The playful smile dancing on his lips just made everything better, especially when the water was reflecting just right on his face, making it look even brighter.
You moved even closer to him, wrapping your arms around his naked shoulders, hands brushing the wet hair glued to the back of his neck. Offering him an encouraging smile, you asked: "Let's try again?"
"Yeah," he confirmed with an ever bigger (and prettier) smile on his face. You could still notice that he was on edge, a bit nervous about the possibility of messing up again.
"If we don't get it, it doesn't matter, 'kay? We can always try again, Eds."
"It's fine." giving in, he bends his knees and you can only see him from the shoulders up. Yet, you feel his big hands travel from your waist to your hip, leaving a warm trail behind as he squeezes the area until he feels your bone poke his hands. Yeah, you'll definitely be sore tomorrow. You could also sense his intense eyes on your chest, that didn't leave much to the imagination if you're being honest, since you wore a white shirt and worse of all, a white bra.
"Ready?"
"Yup."
"Ok." you mutter, in a low tone. Taking a deep breath, you mentally count to three as you finally impulse yourself for him to lift you up. Your hands leave his shoulders once Eddie's hands hold you even harder and bring you above his head. With your arms and legs in the air, you feel a chilly breeze pass through you, and the water cascading off of your body and back into the lake.
"We got it!" the boy excitedly exclaims under you, and you don't even dare to look down, too afraid to ruin the moment. He seems to do the same, not wanting to glance at your reaction and let you fall again, but you could feel his arms shake slightly with the intensity of his contagious laughter. Soon, your own tummy was being squished by the rumbling motion of your giggles, but you made sure to stay looking ahead, balancing yourself.
"I think I'm gonna dive now, Munson."
"Oh, no, you won't, baby." his grip only seems to tighten now. "It's only been five seconds".
"Eight now. I think it's enough."
"Let's try fifteen."
"What? No way, I can feel your arms wobbling already."
"Yeah, we're going down now," he announces as his back falls down into the water, taking you with him. You only had time to hold your breath before diving in, face first.
"I hate you," you announce, breathless as you both emerge together. Your arms unconsciously find their way back into his shoulders, grasping his back as if your life depended on it. He didn't seem to mind and only pulled you closer, by holding your waist and practically carrying you bridal style under the water.
"I know. I think you've said that at least a million times already." Eddie answers back with his lively smile, staring closely at your face. His pretty eyelashes were wet and it seemed like he was blinking far slower than normal. You were still admiring him when he let out a big laugh that seemed to reverberate throughout the place. "Oh, man, I can't believe we did it! That felt good!"
"Yeah," you agree as he spins you around the water, creating a small swirl around you. You can feel your shirt floating with the flow, but you were more preoccupied with the way his hands held you just right. "I knew you could do it."
"You always say that."
"Because is the truth." your mouth slightly brushes his jawline, which made him look directly at you, almost as if he was in a trance. "You gotta have a bit more faith in yourself, Eds."
He only hummed in agreement, still not able to tear his eyes away from you. Everything was perfect, from the way your hands clutched themselves on his shoulders, warming them up, to how he was kneading the flesh of your thighs. It was just right… too right. So, of course, it had to be messed up by a far-away voice calling your name, which, at first, neither of you paid attention to since you were too caught up in the moment to notice any type of external disturbance. But when the screams got nearer and somehow more urgent, you just couldn't ignore them anymore.
Eddie couldn't help but look at you almost like he was begging you not to go, to stay there in his arms and spend the rest of the day with him, in the middle of that lake. And you couldn't help but notice just how pretty he looked like that: wet hair brushed back, dark eyebrows furrowed, pink lips almost forming a pout, and brown eyes staring deep into your soul, almost like a puppy that had been kicked.
"'m sorry, Eddie." your heart broke into a million pieces as the words came out of your mouth. "I see you again tomorrow, okay? We still have the cha-cha to learn."
"Okay," he whispered, still hesitant to let you go. "Same time?"
"Same time," you confirmed as you made your way to the shore, taking your shoes in your hands. Turning back, you gave him a small wave before walking off to the woods that connected the resort to the rather hidden lake.
Eddie could only wave back, watching as you made your way back to Jason Carver, the grandson of the Kellerman's resort owner.

Do you have spidervenom cuddle headcanon? (Pleasure Aftermath or just in general) Cause I’m a sucker for it
I don't have a whole lot of coherent thoughts about this so I'm just going to throw words at the wall like wet spaghetti and see what sticks! 🎉
But no in all seriousness, yes I do! Peter is a character who absolutely evolved into someone who is very touch-oriented in displaying affection. (I can't take total credit for this realization, traincat and softgrungeprophet have done some really good posts about it that made me go.. 🤔💡) This is just kind of a general headcanon for me when it comes to him but I think just as it applies for him in other relationships, so it would apply here too. It's something that just comes naturally to him.
I shamelessly nicked these from TC, please check out her Twitter or Tumblr for the literal best Peter takes ever, but the chin touch is really good:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, onto Eddie, who I think is a little more complicated... I feel it would take time for him to get to a point where he's comfortable being touched a lot by another human being. Kind of like a horse, where you should make sure they see you before you put your hand on them. At first he probably has to be the one to initiate physical contact. Given his history of being touched by another human being not going uh... well for him (looking at the repeated times he's been literally experimented on) it might be a long journey for them. And it'll probably have to be small touches at first - taking his hand, maybe a hand on his arm, before gradually moving into more. Peter pressing himself up against Eddie on the couch, hugs, an arm around his shoulder or waist, all that good stuff.
But I think eventually, like everyone else who's ever fallen in love with the insufferable, endearing asshole who is Peter Parker, he'll warm up to it. He'll start to see that is part of Peter's love language. I have a lot of feelings about Eddie learning to trust other humans touching him in general so. ;w; Yeah.
Haha everybody suffer, I present to you the one and only handholding scene:
Tumblr media
Aaaaanyways, THAT angst fest aside, let me move onto the third part of this glorious ship!
Of course I can't leave out the symbiote, the original piece of this ship that binds them together. It feels a little obvious but the symbiote is of course very touch-oriented. In a weird way, its physical affection with Peter probably has to come gradually, the way Peter's does with Eddie. Depending on when this ship is starting out in their lives, I think will depend on how slowly they need to adjust towards each other. But similarly, Peter has hurt the symbiote! So maybe they need to learn to trust each other again (or perhaps, for the first time) before they can move forward with each other.
I have a little snippet that actually calls back to a scene where Peter was washing the "alien costume", so I'll share that with you here. For a little context, Peter is currently the symbiote's host, as part of a somewhat complicated arrangement:
Eddie continued to stroke it as Peter turned on the taps for the bathroom sink, then plugging it. It was only then that he realized Peter also had a bottle of mild soap. “What are you doing?” “Uh, laundry?” Eddie frowned a little, his grip tightening on the symbiote.  “I’m kidding, Eddie. But I figure I keep sweating, symbiote or no, and I can’t be webbing up purse snatchers and robbers in an un-laundered suit.” He paused with his hands on the taps. “Un...bathed?” He finally turned them off and added some soap to the water, sudsing it up with his hands.  “It’s not dirty, Peter,” he said, a little defensively, “it expels dirt and particulate matter naturally, and-” “It didn’t complain when I did that for weeks after Battleworld!” “You thought it was a smart-technology piece of clothing!” “Just be grateful I didn’t take it to the laundromat! And, for the record, I take very good care of my suits. Do you have any idea how much time I put into them? How much red thread I have to go through? The cost of the fabric if it gets ruined or faded?” Peter gently coaxed the symbiote into the water, working his hands into its malleable flesh, meticulous as he rubbed it into the warm water. It was maybe just a hair above room temperature, given the symbiote’s dislike of heat. It slipped away from his hands with a pleased little shiver, surrendering to Peter's tender loving care.
So yeah, that's that! I guess I kind of focused more on the idea of touch in general vs. actually answering your question jdksal' but I think that before full-on cuddling they would have some work to do. Love that for them though. <3

Ephemera Week (2002)
It’s still ephemera week, and we’re still talking about John K. I said most of my piece on him in the last post, so don’t expect there to go full bore on this one, except I forgot to say he’s animation’s Jerry Lewis. His current stuff is basically Hardly Working. I will not elaborate, because I’m being mean to you0.
MARCH SPECIALS!
In March, Adult Swim advertised a run of one-off specials. A couple of them were already covered because they fell under the parameters of “Adult Swim original production”. They were Welcome to Eltingville (March 3rd) and Saddle Rash (March 24th).
Tumblr media
Day in the Life of Ranger Smith | March 10th 2002 - 11:00 PM (Originally aired on Cartoon Network in 1999)
This was one of two specials commissioned by Cartoon Network re-imagining Yogi Bear. The artist what took this assignment was John K, who I REEEAALLY skewered in last night’s post, didn’t I?
This is about Ranger Smith harassing animals and writing them up for violating park rules, basically. It’s short! I remember liking it at the time! Okay, maybe I’m going crazy here, but I distinctly remembered a part at the end where Ranger Smith is in bed and he solemnly confides in the viewer that the noises of wilderness give him nightmares and then it just ends. Did I imagine this? It does end with him in bed, but this doesn’t happen in the version on YouTube (which is from the Adult Swim airing). Huh.
Tumblr media
Boo Boo Runs Wild | March 10th 2002 - 11:15PM (Originally aired on Cartoon Network in 1999)
Boo Boo Runs Wild was another one of these stand-alone Yogi Bear John K specials. This one was 30 minutes long. The Ranger Smith short was a brief 7 minutes; I’m guessing they aired a couple Capt. Lingers or something to fill time.
This one is about Boo Boo reverting to his feral nature and causing BIIIIG problems! This special would later go on to be kind of a weird trolling thing Adult Swim would do where they aired it every Sunday for a few months, even promoting regularly. This was like 2006, I think? They’d also air it as part of April Fools. Is that Adult Swim admitting this special sorta sucks? Does it sorta suck? Again, I liked these at the time and REFUSED to actively rewatch these for this write-up. Sorry.
Tumblr media
The Jetsons: Father and Son Day/The Best Son | March 10th, 2002 11:45PM (Originally aired on CartoonNetwork.com in 2001) Our John K rock block ends with a pair of Jetsons shorts, Father and Son Day and The Best Son respectively. This is kinda the same deal as his Yogi Bear shorts, but these were exclusive for Cartoon Network’s website. I remember watching them on there. They are as bad as you’d expect late-period John K internet shorts to be, though the second short is a superior version of Spielberg’s A.I. (in that it’s shorter).
Tumblr media
Night of the Living Doo | March 17th, 2002 - 11:00PM (originally aired on Cartoon Network, 2001)
Night of the Living Doo originally aired as wraparound segments during a Halloween Scooby Doo marathon on Cartoon Network. It’s kinda like an episode of the Scooby Doo Movies, which shoehorned in a guest star each episode. Suddenly my man Dick Van Dyke be running a carnival and shit. That’s the Scooby Doo Movies. At the end of the night they played all the wraparound segments in one uninterrupted sitting, so the viewer could appreciate it as an actual full-on Scooby Doo episode. Night of the Living Doo functioned both as an extension of that series as well as a parody. The guests were Gary Coleman, David Cross, and the very cool band Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. It was all very self-deprecating and had jokes about the absurdity of Scooby Doo tropes. Well trod territory by this point, sure. But this is better than most irreverent Scooby Doo things. It didn’t hurt that I was a HUGE David Cross fan when this aired. Is this where I tell the stupid-ass story about getting mad at a message board guy for not liking David Cross? Sure. Okay, yeah. When this aired on Adult Swim a guy on Kon’s (hi Kon) message board posted something about not finding David Cross funny, shrugging that he didn’t get the hype. He cited this and his appearances in the Men in Black movies, and nothing else as proof for his lackluster comedy skills. It’s kinda like deeming Eddie Murphy as a bad comedian after watching Dr. Doolittle.
The point of this special is that David Cross is a little wooden and stilted, like in the old Scooby Doo Movies episodes. This poster revealed that he never heard David Cross’s stand-up or seen Mr. Show, explaining “I don’t watch puppet shows” A response that still baffles me to this day. Why Mr. Show isn’t a-- WHAT IS HE TALKING ABOUT? I’m not even sure if there was EVER a puppet on Mr. Show*. David wasn’t even a guest on Crank Yankers at this point! SO WHAT THE FUCK? To this day whenever mutual pals from that board get together and watch a movie or show and a puppet appears we make a joke about this guy. Good story? No? Fuck you.
Other stuff about this show: When it originally aired on Cartoon Network it was a little bit longer than the Adult Swim version. There’s a missing scene. I think it’s David trying to play an improv game with a mummy or something. At one point I had it on tape, but I’m not sure I kept it. Sorry.
*sorry to be coy here, but I do know of at least one puppet on Mr. Show, episode 204 there is brief footage of Grass Valley Greg putting on a puppet show for his staff. This CAN’T be the source of the confusion, can it? It’s literally like, 5 seconds.
MAIL BAG
This’ll teach me to skip a day cuz this really piled up. Thanks, guys. I love all the attention. It is my favorite thing.
I never really saw oblongs as something for the hot topic set. They had Invader Zim and Squee for that kind of shit. Oblongs feel like it was always directly targeting me: the shut-in comedy nerd who would appreciate will ferrell and the sklars being in a thing. Since they ended up doing the exact same show with Janeane Garofalo and David Cross a few years later it seems like that was the goal.
Yeah, I guess that also makes sense. There were a few elements that were kinda gothy but this show was mostly just Angus Oblong ahem, clowning around (puckering mouth to stifle laughter like Chris Elliott in Cabin Boy)
What are your thoughts on the other adult animation blocks of the past couple decades? Spike's notriously failed attempt. Animation Domination. Apparently Syfy has had their own going?
Spike was irredeemably bad. People think this shit is easy. Animation Domination is sorta legit, but it’s anchored by mostly crap. That ADHD thing was kinda good and underrated. Is that still going on? I wish I were more diligent about watching/recording that. Some of them bumpers were good. Also, we mustn’t forget MTV’s oddities. They were kinda the first cable network to court Adult Animation as their thing. They deserve some kind of credit for that. I’m sure they’re doing fine.
I'm having a nice big thing of spaghetti for dinner with some chicken parm? Jealous?
I’ve never had those are they good
What does Ephemera mean? Why is this happenening? Why aren't you talking about 10 Home Movies episodes in a row like a good boy.
In dude time, my friend. In dude time
What would be your Adult Swim dream come true?
Having a complete archive of Adult Swim blocks on a harddrive like Don Giller has with his Letterman archive. Even the commercials and shit. I know of a guy who was a regular taper of the entire block from night 1 but I’m not sure he kept up with it when they went nightly. I should ask him if he still has his tapes, huh?
That or they bring back the BUILD YOUR OWN DVD thing but with blu-rays and you can make your own bumps, which was a different thing they had. THEY SHOULD COMBINE THEM. And you can master it in SD if you wanna put 10 hours of stuff on a disk.
All this is archival bullshit dork shit. Real answer: Clay Croker comes back from the dead and every block is hosted by Space Ghost. That’d be it, right?
If anyone has genuine/better answers please write in with them I wanna keep this conversation going. ‘kay?
McDonalds reintroduces limited edition Adult Swim Toys. You can get them all (plus an extra to keep wrapped for collectors purposes) but you have to spend 20 dollars at McDonalds to grab them all. This is the last day of the promotion. You have to personally eat everything you buy but you can take it home. You can only buy one of each food item. What are you getting? I know the longer the mailbag message is the quicker you are inclined to give some glib remark but indulge this one for once.
Oh wow. I’m literally going to take this seriously. I’d roll in as breakfast was ending. Get myself a McChicken Biscuit and a Bacon Egg & Cheese McGriddle, hashbrowns and a Coffee. Gobble that knob on down. Wipe my mouth with a napkin. It’s lunchtime, bitch. Big Mac, Large Fries, BIG ass soda. You feel me, dude? Lemme tally up. Okay, probably need more. 20 piece nugget. Take that home cuz I’m probably gonna have to save some for dinner. That’s probably 20 bucks right there, especially if you go to the McDonalds on Burnside where all the menu items are more expensive because of the amount of security they have to hire (did you know that different McDonalds have different prices even in the same city? I didn’t until very recently). If this somehow doesn’t satisfy my price point I get a Vanilla shake and eat it anally DURING my BIG D squirt sesh, so it’ll spend as little time in my body as possible. Wait, do I get something for this? I might do this tomorrow just cuz. It sounds like a funky thing to do
Do you think you'll open an Adult Swim mueseum at some point? You seem to be the only steward of its history.
Unless I’m hired to by a large corporation, probably not. Also I don’t think I actually have much in the way of merch other than DVDs. I stopped being a DVD completist at some point around Freaknick The Musical. Oh, I never EVER bought a Robot Chicken DVD, EVER. I literally had a nightmare once that one appeared in my collection.
Hey! Please keep us abreast any time you put more of your garbage on eBay. Maybe you can put your wedding dress on there, you big girl.
Fucking sexist/trasphobic behavior.
Check out my eBay auctions I got season 18 of NCIS up there and some other things :)
The Ripping Friends blow chunks. I don't care if a rapist or the opposite of a rapist (a virgin who volunteers, lol) made it. It sucks a high hard one like when Ozzy banged the Cheiftan's Wife in that Black Sabbath TV Funhouse cartoon. Tell me more.
Tell you more?
Name one rap song you tolerate lol. You can't say anything by weird al or marky mark.
I guess I like the song the pest sings from the motion picture The Pest
Are there any good podcasts on adult swim?
The official one hosted by Matt Harrigan is good, but I’ve only bounced around on it. I don’t know if there’s any formal recap ones. I simply don’t know!
HE'S GIVING HIGH HARD ONE TO CHEIFTAN'S WIFE? UH OH!
Buddy, you are BANNED for LIFE from my MAIL BAG! You drive me CRAZY!

Two boys being totally relieved to be still alive after Neibolt Street and the ‘werewolf’ encounter! Unique scene from the book.
I am happy about the result. Especially Bill’s pose turned out satisfying.

SOFT BITCH HOURS!! Give me ALL of your thoughts on an AU where Buck and Eddie grow up together, in school, maybe separating after high school when Eddie goes to the Army and Buck trains for the SEALs; so when Eddie joins the 118, it’s not a meeting, it’s a reunion.
I lost the entire original post I made because my life hates me but here we go:
flo you are the loml.
I’m in the process of writing this Love Rosie AU, where Buck and Eddie are childhood best friends, so that’s one. But like...every AU I’ve ever read is always they were dating, or best friends, or they did the horizontal tango before Eddie joined the 118, so for you, my love...we are writing something else.
In this AU, they’re the same age.
Buck and Eddie aren’t best friends in school. They’ve just been in the same class together since 3rd grade.
In middle school, they’d done a few projects together and that’s how they become tentative friends.
Still, they’re not the type of people to hang out outside of school. They’ll nod at each other in the hallway and that’s it.
In high school, this doesn’t change much. They see each other a little more than before, because both of them play a sport for their school and both of them go to parties, but they’re still not close.
Eddie plays baseball, and Buck plays soccer. Both of show up to every sports game that they can make it to out of loyalty for their school spirit, but other than that, they're still acquaintances.
In high school, they become a little closer because of all the projects they pair up to do together.
It stems over from middle school, because they just work well together.
Buck is an average student, prefers learning at his own pace instead of studying for some curriculum. It takes their first high school project for Eddie to realize that Buck is non-traditionally intelligent, and that’s the first big realization he has that grades don’t define you. Eddie, on the other hand is more of a textbook nerd, though he still hates studying.
Through these projects, they grow a little closer, enough to talk to each other about things outside of school and homework. Buck knows about Eddie’s long-time girlfriend, and how he wants to marry her one day. In turn, Eddie knows how much Buck misses his sister, and how much he hates his brother-in-law.
Eddie tells Buck that he doesn’t want to apply to college. He doesn’t know what he wants to do, and probably will work alongside his dad, but he doesn’t want to go to college. He also confides, just once, that he’s thinking he might join the Army.
Buck tells Eddie that he wants to travel and explore, but his parents want him to go to college, so he applied.
When they graduate, they share a side-hug, and pose for a few pictures together, but after that...both of them think that they’ll never see the other again.
Buck does end up going to college for a couple of semesters, but he also spends the next few years just finding a place to belong, a purpose to go after.
He backpacks across the country with a few friends, dabbles in a few things and narrows the sheer amount of possibilities down to the fact that he wants to help someone.
He even goes to South America, exploring options there for a summer and supporting those endeavours by bartending. Finally, he decides to apply to become a SEAL, only to realize that they want machines, which Buck can’t do. So he turns to firefighting instead.
He graduates at the top of his class, completely driven by the sheer purpose and fuel the idea of firefighting gives him. When he sits down with the 118, a plateful of spaghetti waiting for him, Buck thinks he’s finally found a place where he belongs.
Eddie, on the other hand, spends the first few years after graduation working with his father, putting aside money for the life he can see with Shannon. His girlfriend is completing her degree at the local community college, and they get married a couple of weeks after she graduates.
It comes as a shock to both of them when Shannon gets pregnant. They’d just gotten married, just given the down payment on the house, they have car payments to fill...there’s no way they can support a baby right now.
Seeing no other options on how to provide for his family, Eddie enlists. The mistake that he made was that he didn’t discuss it with his wife before he signed his life away to the Army, but they didn’t have another choice.
Eddie’s right at the end of his first tour when Christopher gets diagnosed with cerebral palsy. He already knows that it doesn’t change anything about the love he has for his son, but he was already terrified to be a father before. With this diagnosis, Eddie is terrified that he can’t be the man his son needs.
And that doesn’t even include the additional costs that come with CP. Eddie and Shannon don’t want to limit what they can give their son, but money’s always been tight, and with the new therapies and hospital bills, they can’t field them all, even if they both work.
So Eddie signs up for another tour, knowing the benefits will take care of it...but he does it without discussing it with Shannon first, again. He regrets it, but he knows he’s only trying to provide for his family — even though a part of him knows that he’s also running from how terrifying real life is.
This second tour proves to be the one that breaks his and his wife’s relationship. He feels awkward, clumsy...a guest in his own home. It’s a struggle to see how much Shannon and Christopher have adapted to a life without him.
Shannon and Eddie can’t get through a single conversation without yelling at each other anymore, and between that and his nightmares, and trying to adjust to civilian life, he’s stretched to the limit.
Christopher, at six, proves to be the light that keeps him sane. He comes easily to wherever Eddie is and crawls onto his lap, snuggling in tight as he talks about whatever new hyper-fixation he’s read about. Eddie just holds him close and breathes in the unique scent of his son’s skin, forever grateful that even riddled with metal and shrapnel and trauma, he got to come home to this.
Three months after he’s home, Shannon leaves, citing that she needs time. Eddie throws himself into working whatever odd jobs he can find, sometimes three at once, all while trying to be there for Christopher. His parents prove helpful for childcare, but the way they criticize him every time he comes back to pick Chris up makes his skin feel tight.
So it’s a huge relief when he gets into the LAFD, gets through the academy, gets assigned to the 118. Finally, he can leave El Paso behind.
Or so he thought. He’s not expecting the man glaring at him from just outside the locker room, but he’d know that birthmark anywhere.
Buck was already a little annoyed at the sight of the new hotshot in their locker room, but when Bobby introduces him as Eddie Diaz, his neck snaps right back to the unfairly hot man so fast.
Eddie Diaz is a common enough name, right?
The man in the locker room is far off from the scrawny guy that Eddie used to be in school, but then again, even Buck isn’t the same guy he was.
“Buck?” Eddie grins, a smile that knocks Buck off-balance. “Man, it’s been a while, I didn’t even recognize you! How’ve you been?”
“Hi Eddie.” Buck forces a smile on his face, unsure of what to do with the genuine happiness Eddie seems to have at seeing him again, and turns towards his team. “We went to school together.”
Hen and Chim pounce at the opportunity to get to know more about Buck’s past, firing questions left and right at Eddie, who takes them all in stride. Buck isn’t quite sure what do with the complimentary flair that Eddie adds to his answer, either.
He stays quiet through all this, annoyed at how capable Eddie Diaz is, despite them being the same age. He’s irritated at how attracted he is to the man now, and he’s caught off-guard by the sudden blast-from-the-past.
Suddenly, his drive to prove himself only increases.
But he lets all of it go as they pull a grenade out of an old man’s leg, and Eddie’s complimenting him on his work under pressure before they even roll the guy away.
He realizes that Eddie’s always seen him as capable and smart — he has nothing to prove. So he accepts the hand held his way, and they agree on becoming partners again.
Only this time, it’s not a silly school project...it’s life.
Bonus for you because ily:
When Buck hears about Christopher, he pounces at the opportunity to meet him, and when they finally do, Christopher and Buck become best friends near-instantly.
And when Buck pulls out their old yearbooks to show the kid, complete with a graduation album, Eddie knows that he’s found what he’s been looking for, even if he can’t reach for it just yet.
WHEW. okay, well. I hope you like this!! :D <3 Sorry it’s such a mess, I just wasn’t sure what to write!!

Venom 2 Soundtrack List: Every Song From Let There Be Carnage
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
As anyone who has spent a minute or two on Tik Tok can tell you, songs from the Venom movie franchise have a prosperity to go viral…not entirely unlike the alien symbiote himself.
A track from legendary rapper Eminem, fittingly titled “Venom,” that was featured in the 2018 Tom Hardy film has popped up all over the Internet in recent years. Here is a particular favorite example of mine.
Yes, most of these memes have to do with filicide. Read into that what you may. Now that the long-awaited sequel to Venom is out, Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage, shouldn’t we be expecting another quality Eminem song to go along with it? The answer to that, as it turns out, is a resounding: yes!
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
On Sept. 30, the same day that Let There Be Carnage began screening in theaters, Eminem released the track “Last One Standing” featuring longtime collaborator Skylar Grey along with Polo G and Mozzy. You can give it a listen for yourself below.
So this one clearly doesn’t have the same viral potential as “Venom” but it’s a nifty little tune all the same. The inclusion of Grey’s angelic voice adds a distinct softness that is fitting for a movie that many critics agree is basically a love story between a man and the symbiote residing in him.
Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage opened on Oct. 1 in North America (with screenings starting the previous evening). It once again stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, the journalist whose body is inhabited by his Mr. Hyde-like protector Venom. Fulfilling the promise of the original film’s post-credit sequence, Woody Harrelson costars in the sequel as psychotic serial killer Cletus Kasady.
Speaking of post-credit scenes, rumor has it that Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage features a doozy of one as well…
All in all, it’s a pretty good time to be Marshall Mathers a.k.a. Eminem. The “My Name Is” artist was just announced as one of five musicians playing the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show alongside Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar. He also just opened up a restaurant in his native Detroit called “Mom’s Spaghetti”, which named after an infamous line in his hit from the 8 Mile soundtrack, “Lose Yourself.”
Just as was the case with Venom, Venom 2‘s soundtrack doesn’t feature any other pop hits of note. Instead the soundtrack, available on Spotify and the other usual spots, contains original pieces from the film’s composer Marco Beltrami. You can check that out below.
At the end of the day, not every Marvel movie soundtrack can be Guardians of the Galaxy or Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. At the same time though, neither of those movies were a cool 88 minutes long!

Reddie in the hammock 🥺
The Hammock
After what seemed like an unfinishable summer, the losers finally got a little break in their clown killing activities. Ben wanted to surprise his friends with a getaway, a place no one could reach them, not pennywise, not bowers, not anyone. Thats when he built the clubhouse. Loser’s members only! He was so proud of it and he finally got to show the losers, they were all so grateful to have a safe heaven from the outside world. They had games, comic books and a hammock. That hammock had been the subject to a couple of fights between Richie and Eddie. The smaller boy claimed that the losers agreed to 10min in the hammock per turn, however Richie claimed he never agreed to those terms.
One day, while Richie was lying in the hammock, he heard Eddie’s alarm go off. Thinking nothing of it, Richie went back to reading his comic book.
“Hey fucker! Your time in the hammock is up! It’s my turn now, get out!” Eddie yelled
Richie looked up from his comic, annoyed. “I never agreed to that Eds, I’m not moving.” He looked back down at his comic.
“Fucking hell Richie, you really don’t know how to share a place with other people huh? You’re so annoying, c’mon get up, it’s my turn!” Eddie said getting closer to Richie, his voice slightly higher in pitch.
“No.”
“UGH! You know what, fuck you I’m getting in that hammock!” Eddie said as he lightly threw himself on the hammock.
“Oh my god, Eddie! What are you doing, were going to fucking fall!” Richie shouted
“Good, fucking fall you little shit. Im staying in the hammock.” Eddie spat
“Fine!” Richie said as he started reading his comic again.
Eddie looked at Richie. He had expected more of a fight, he was ready for more of a fight. But that little shit was reading his stupid comic. He doesn't know why but he needed Richie to pay attention to him. Their bickering wasn't over.
Suddenly, Richie feels a foot hit him in the face. He knows Eddie is trying to get a rise out of him and he could not let him win. So instead, he keeps reading his comic, but he put his hand on Eddie’s leg and squeezed it, trying to make him stop. The fact that Richie hadn't looked up, only aggravated Eddie even more. He then proceeded to slip his foot under Richie’s glasses and flicked them half way across the room.
Richie just sighed, he figured this was his new normal now.
A couple of months after that summer. Eddie was at home pouring himself a glass of hot cocoa, when suddenly the phone starts ringing. He looked at the time. 9:47 pm, why would anyone be calling at this time?
“Kaspbrak residence” Eddie answered
“Eds, its me, meet me at the clubhouse in an half an hour.” Richie mumbled
“What? I can’t just-“ the line went dead.
Shit, Eddie thought. He was going to have to sneak out. Richie sounded serious and he couldn't let him down.
He went creeped up the stairs and slightly opened the door to his mother’s bedroom.
“Goodnight mommy, I’m off to bed!” Eddie said
“Who was on the phone?” She said with a concerned look.
“Oh it was Bill, he called to remind me to bring his book back.” Eddie lied
“Okay Eddie bear, goodnight.”
He quickly closed the door and headed for his room. He changed into sweatpants and a sweater and packed his fanny pack, ready for any situation. He then proceeded to slowly climb out his window and head towards the clubhouse, following little strings of tape Ben had left on trees, so the other losers wouldn't get lost. Once he got there, he could see a faint light coming from the ground. He opened the hatch and went down, slightly terrified of what awaited him. What he wasn't expecting to see was the club house illuminated with Christmas lights and Richie sitting in a sleeping bag on the hammock.
“Hiya Eds, took you long enough”. Richie let out a shaky laugh
Eddie knew something was wrong, the other boy’s tone of voice wasn't as smooth and his eyes were almost lifeless, compared to his normal, bright eyes. He quickly rushed over to his side.
“What’s wrong Richie” Eddie started looking all over, touching his arm, leg, cheek, basically looking for any sign of injury. “Are you okay, why are you crying?” Eddie’s voice was shaking.
Richie grabbed the smaller boy’s hands and held then tightly on his leg. “Im not hurt Eds, well not physically. I just got into a fight with my parents.”
“What happened” Eddie asked, unconsciously rubbing his thumb over Richie’s hand.
“Ever since last summer, I barely sleep and whenever I manage to fall asleep, I have nightmares about the stupid clown. My parents yelled at me because my grades have been going down and they want to know why. But what am I going to them tell? “Oh yeah ma, I’m sorry about that, it’s just a murderous clown tried to kill me and my friends and I haven’t been able to sleep because I’m terrified he’s going to come back and kill them.” So I played dumb and told them I didn’t know why, so they started yelling at me and i couldn't bear staying there so I called you.”
“Why me?” Eddie whispered
“Because you’re my Eddie Spaghetti!” Richie said while pinching his cheeks.
“ So what were just going to sleep on the floor?”
“No, in the hammock. You know we can both fit.” He said with a small grin.
“Okay..”
For some reason, when Richie said those words, Eddie’s heart skipped a beat. He ignored it and climbed into the hammock.
“I thought maybe you could put you head near mine. I brought some new comic books we could read together...” Richie trailed off.
“Hmm okay” Eddie changed positions and nudged himself near Richie. The boy’s had never been this close but they both felt like it was something that had needed to happen. Like they were both safe.
After reading comics for an hour or so, Richie yawned. “ Wow Eds, didn't think i would ever say this again, but I think I’m going to go sleep now.”
“Oh that’s good Richie, yeah we should just go to sleep.” Eddie started panicking, did he have to go back to their original position, on opposites sides? But before be could move, he felt arms wrap around him.
“Goodnight Eds.”
“Hmm, goodnight ‘Chee”
They both snuggled under one small sleeping bag, cuddling. Eddie head resting on Richie’s chest, falling asleep to the faint beat of his heart.
That was the first of many nights spent at the clubhouse for Richie and Eddie.
They came almost every night until their graduation, none of the other losers knew (even though, most of them suspected). It’s where they came to escape their parents, where they first confessed their love for each other (Eddie had said it first in a fit of rage against the taller boy (not exactly the way he planned it but hey, it all worked out)), where they shared their first kiss (and many other first...) it became their home. It was the place where they felt safest, where they could be themselves without having people judge their love. An escape for everyday life. Their love is built into the walls and they both know that without the clubhouse and that stupid hammock, they would not share the love they have for one another today.
SORRY IT TOOK SO LONG! BUT HERE IT IS I HOPE YOU GUYS ENJOY IT. SO MANY OF YOU LIKE MY ORIGINAL POST SO I HOPE YOU ENJOY THE REAL DEAL!

a little jealous
A/N: this was requested by anon, I hope you enjoy, let me know what you think!
request: Could you write a fic post it chapter 2 where Richie and Eddie start dating, but then Richie starts to feel jealous of Eddie with an attractive coworker?
warnings: a few curse words, a very brief mention of homophobia, a bit of self doubt
Tumblr media
They’ve been officially dating for two months when Eddie invites Richie to join him on a work related business party. It’s not the first one Eddie has had to go to, but up until now he had always made up an excuse so that he only had to stay for about an hour, not nearly long enough for Richie to tag along to.
The difference between this one and the others he has already been too, is that this time he needs to stay to the end. Eddie might be up for a promotion if his boss takes a liken too him, which is why he is determined to make a good impression. If Eddie gets turned down, he’ll probably leave his job and search for another one, Richie thinks, since Eddie had been going on none stop about quitting.
Richie has been to his office before, on more than one occasion, when Eddie was so stressed he forgot his lunch, so it’s not his first Rodeo. He knows a few people that will attend, like Anisa who is the secretary on the bottom floor, Emmet who is Eddie’s coworker and works in the office adjacent to his, and Karen who is about as much a pain in the ass as Eddie’s mom, but Richie loves to fuck with her.
Anisa is his best friend in the office, well of course besides Eds, but whenever he stops by, he always leaves some form of candy on her disk, a references to the first time the two met, when Richie accidentally dropped all the candy he was planning to surprise Eddie with. It had been Halloween, and even though Eddie didn’t celebrate it, none of the losers actually, Richie still felt the need to do something. They hit it off straight after, especially when Anisa confided in him that she had never seen Eddie smile as much as when he got together with him.
Emmet is a bit of a hardass, work till he drops, party till he drops kind off guy. Full-on in everything he does, which sometime is a little of putting, but it can also cause hilarious comedy gold moments, which Richie has used multiple times in his sketches.
He’s pretty sure his winning Karen over aswell, since he has even managed to get a small smile out of her, which is a hell of a lot more than he ever got from Sonia.
The others he knows only vaguely by the nicknames he gave them, ranging from boss man to toilet man, the latter spending all his time on the toilet if Eddie is anything to go by.
Still, Richie is very excited when he gets permission from Eddie to go with him, so much so that he’s practically bouncing on his foot whilst he gets ready. Eddie is less keen on going tonight, but that has nothing to do with the fact that Richie is going.
Ever since returning from Derry, the two of them don’t go out much. They meet up with the losers, but apart from that they usually spend their time inside of the confinements of their home, either fighting over he gets the remote, cooking, working or annoying the shit out of each other.
Neither of them want to either, they enjoy each other’s company, and those of the other members of the losers club. When they do go out, they always seem to run into someone they know giving them shit about being gay. ‘Oh Eddie, I thought you were still married to your wife?’ or ‘If it isn’t the trashmount with a boy. What happened couldn’t get enough girl anymore?’
Most of them don’t mean bad, and Eddie nor Richie are ashamed of their love, they’re just tired of having to explain over and over again, so they stay in.
Work parties are the worst for Eddie, who doesn’t even like most of his coworkers to begin with, but sometimes they are mandatory, and he has no choice but to drag his ass over there.
So Eddie grumbles his way through getting ready, shaving and brushing his teeth with a stern look on his face, picking out his and Richie’s cloths. ‘There’s no way I’m letting you dress yourself, you’ll look like a walking Christmas tree.’
They lose some time while they get ready because Richie tries to cheer Eddie up a bit, by threatening to dose him in cold water, welcoming the snappy warning Eddie sends his way.
By the time they make it to Eddie’s workplace, where the party is going to be held, it’s a quarter past nine, while they were supposed to be there at nine.
This does not do any wonders for Eddie’s mood, who’s scowl turns impossibly bigger. He almost trips over his own two feet in his haste to make it inside, but before they do, he tugs Richie aside by the hem of his sleeve.
‘Please act normal, I need this job alright?’
‘My Eds, you wound me. You think I would throw away your honor just for a few laughs from a couple of lads, I could never.’ Richie’s British voice thick his words with an accent, having the intended effect. A smile tugs up the sides of Eddie’s mouth, even when he desperately tries to hide it, rolling his eyes extravagantly.
‘See that’s what I mean dickhead, don’t do the fucking British guy or I’m dumping you.’
He’s clearly joking, so Richie doesn’t dignify it with a response, though he does snort a little in amusement. ‘Sir, yes sir.’ He calls out long after Eddie has turned his back, cackling when Eddie flips him the bird behind his back. Fondly, Richie follows him through the long corridors, first turning right, then left, left again to eventually enter a massive open space, not to far from the bathroom Richie always uses when he comes to visit.
‘Hey, if you want to get out of here, just use the word salmon for whatever, than we’ll skoot on right out of here, Eddie Spaghetti’, Richie whispers inconspicuously to Eddie, trying to avoid being heard by somebody else. He hopes he succeeded, but by the looks of it, he did.
Eddie shakes his head fondly, his hand interlocking with Richie’s with a warning squeeze.
‘Shut up you idiot’, he mumbles fondly, the look in his eyes radiating nothing but love for the man in next to him.
They spot Anisa first, the sour look on her face melting away when she sees the two of them entering. She grabs two more drinks, balancing a total of three drinks in two hands, and offers it gracefully to them.
‘What took you guys so long?’ The voice of Bon Jovi booms through the room, originating from a djs-table in the left corner, making it hard to understand what she’s saying.
Mister clean over here had to be completely dosed up for this occasion, I think he changed cloths like three times, isn’t that right Eds?’ to be fair though, Eddie looks horrendously handsome, it’s almost criminal. His suit accentuates all the good features of his body, which is everything, his dress shoes make a squeaking noise every time they walk over the floor, and his hair is neatly combed back, making him look even more attractive than he already is daily.
A huff is forced out of him when he feels Eddie’s elbow dig slightly into his side. Eddie glare is turned up to a hundred.
‘Do you know how unsanitary it is to not wash every day? Do you know how many germs are transferred onto your hand by just touching a doorknob? If I didn’t wash up you know statistically speaking I have a 40% change of catching a disease? You know this asshole, why would you need to-‘
He’s intercepted by Anisa; ‘you two are so cute together’, and Richie couldn’t agree more. He takes a sip of his drink; which is champagne apparently, and is seconds away from asking Eddie who his boss is supposed to be, when a man Richie has never seen around the office makes an appearance, sliding in front Eddie’s left to give him a tight hug. By doing so, he breaks the link that Richie and Eddie hands still had, rudely shoving Richie slightly back.
He frowns, but does nothing as he waits for Eddie to introduce them. Anisa, who is still standing with them, looks to be as flabbergasted as he is.
‘Eddie, look at you. Handsome as always’, the man compliments while pulling back, his eyes shamelessly raking over Eddie’s form.
Eddie laughs politely, thanking him while reaching for Richie’s hand again. ‘Yeah, good to see you to Seth, this is my boyfriend Richie Tozier’, Eddie explains when the guy, Seth, makes no move to introduce himself.
Seth forces a curt nod towards Richie, not so much as a hello. It irks Richie to no end, but this might the one Eddie’s trying to impress, and Richie is not enough of an asshole to ruin Eddie’s chances because he’s annoyed.
‘I’m going to find Emmet, I’ll see you guys later’, Anisa tells them, as she turns around and walks off, something Richie would love to be doing now too.
He stays rooted to his spot though, trying to make himself as big as possible. It must look a bit ridiculous, but he can’t help it, there’s something about this guy.
‘So, have you managed to talk to the boss man yet? The guy really likes fresh workers.’ He tries to joke, but it falls flat, and Richie can’t help but feel smug and a little sympathetic towards the guy, so he laughs a bit awkwardly. It’s better than not responding at all, he argues, but then Seth levels him with such an annoyed look that Richie can’t help but feel a little intimidated by.
He hasn’t seen that sort of look since Sonya, and for all his joking about her, he really was terrified that she would manage to convince Eddie to stay away from for good. Uneasiness sweeps it’s way through Richie’s body, the only thing keeping him slightly calm and stable, is the hand he’s holding.
Richie tries to change the subject, to distract himself from how weird he finds the guy, by asking how he and Eddie know each other.
‘We collaborate on projects from time to time, Seth works for one of our client companies.’
‘Yeah, and we wouldn’t be coming back to the same firm if it wasn’t for Eddie over here,’ he gestures to Eddie as if Richie didn’t know who the fuck that was, ‘I’ve never had a more dedicated, ambitious, articulated, clever –‘
While he continues to dish out compliments, Richie reaches his arm over Eddie’s shoulders, pulling him flush to his side. Obviously it’s wonderful to hear compliments, and god knows Eddie deserves nothing but that, but it’s quite off putting that the same guy keeps praising him at every turn, and not even acknowledges his boyfriends presence instead being rude.
Eddie response by pressing a kiss to Richie’s cheek, which is a lot of PDA for him, maybe to sooth Richie, maybe because it was an automatic reflex, either way, Richie takes a deep breath and manages to hold his tongue till the guy is finished talking.
‘Yep, that’s my Eds, nothing but the best. I’m lucky to have him.’
He looks up from Eddie’s face to smile brightly in Seth’s vicinity, not even trying to compete with him, just being brutally honest.
‘He’s just as ambitious at home by the way, you should see the poses he can bend into when we’re-‘
‘Beep beep, Richie’, Eddie’s voice, sharp as the edge of a knife cuts in. ‘Don’t you dare finish that sentence you prick. And don’t call me that.’
Richie cackles, gripping his stomach with the one hand that isn’t occupied to stop himself from doubling over, Eddie’s angry face only making it worse.
‘Why do you call him Eds? He told you he doesn’t like that.’
Richie’s head snaps back up again, and this time, he feels actual anger. It’s one thing to flirt with Eddie in front of him, or be rude to him, Richie can deal with that, at least on the outside. But insulting their nicknames? He knows for a fact Eddie only tells him to stop calling him that out of habit, Eddie having admit to that himself, but this guy had no right commenting on it.
Eddie himself seems agitated now, in a truly fashion, one that he has never used to talk to Richie, but before he can say anything, another man steps their way, extending his hand and waiting for Eddie to shake it.
‘Mister Duke, how are you sir?’ Eddie asks a little nervously, and Richie lets his arm drop down. He refuses to let Eddie be denied this opportunity by homophobia, even if he isn’t sure that the man is homophobic, he’s not ready to take any changes.
With a gesture over his shoulder, Eddie follows who Richie presumes is his boss over to a table with man who looked like they stepped right out of the TV show suits, but Richie declines to walk with him.
Eddie needs a chance to prove himself, and Richie was just going to support him from where he was standing.
For a minute, he forgets Seth is still standing with him, until he opens his mouth again.
‘You know you’re only dragging him down right?’ He asks cruelly.
Richie frowns at him, his hands closed in fists, trying to lure himself away from his breaking point.
‘He would do much better with me. What do you have to offer? Money? I’ve got plenty of that, and at least I have status. Some small town comedian who flunked at his show that one time, and still hasn’t made a comeback yet. You look about as disheveled as a homeless men, and I can’t say I see much love between the two of you. You annoy him, and you might find it funny, respectable people don’t. Leave him before you ruin him like you ruined yourself. I could take better care of him than you ever could.’
After his monologue, he stares Richie down with a cocky expression, seemingly daring Richie to respond. When he doesn’t get one in ten seconds, he trudges on, probably to on to the next person to bother.
Richie feels like all the bones in his body have turned to liquid as he struggles to stay upright. For a moment he gazes around the room in shame, because it seems like a scene from a movie where everyone looks on to the bully annihilating some nerd, as that is the exact same emotion Richie comprehends, before he realizes that everyone is caught up in their own conversation, and he too walks off, going to the bathroom.
He knows Eddie will search for him when he’s done with his conversation, but for a moment that thought is put on the back-burner as he starts to get a little faint. It takes longer than it usually does to reach the toilet door, in the meanwhile he’s had to shrug Emmet of and ignore Anisa’s callout, but none of that matters when he finally gets there.
As soon as the door closes behind him, a loud sob leaves his throat. Only one sob is allowed to leave his lips, he argues with himself, so he resumes to silent tears only after that.
Overreactor, his traitorous mind hisses at him, and he knows it’s right, but he can’t help how he feels. He survived a fucking clown alien attacking him, and even that didn’t make him cry until he thought Eddie might have died.
However, he knows that Seth had a point, Richie is really not good enough for Eddie. And maybe Seth could be, at the very least, he did have a stable job, and he thinks highly of Eddie, maybe he was right, and he should leave Eddie so he can grow to his full potential.
Some times goes by while he’s thinking it over, and in the meanwhile he has moved to wash his face by the washing bins, scrubbing the area around his eyes to make it appear like he wasn’t crying. As he’s doing this, he hears Eddie call out to him. ‘Hey dickhead, you in here?’
The door whips open, clashing against the wall with a loud bang so hard that Richie flinches for a moment. A worried looking Eddie is standing in the door opening, his tie undone atop his blazer, and his frantic eyes searching the door, calming down slightly when he sees Richie.
‘Hey, why are you taking so long, you fall in the toilet or something?’ Eddie tries, a futile attempt at ignorance, Richie can clearly see how perturbed he is, but he’s kind enough to let Richie come to him.
Instead of telling Eddie the things that are on his mind, Richie tries to force a way around the topic, by using humor and creating a joke. ‘Well Eds, I was just about to call your mom, to declare my love for her.’
‘Richie’, Eddie sighs, running a hand over his face like he’s trying to mentally prepare himself? By the tone of his voice, Richie understands that Eddie is asking him to tell the truth, to speak what’s on his mind, but that can be so hard sometimes, so in lieu of having a conversation with Eddie, Richie starts to cry.
A hand pushes it’s way up to his mouth, trying to desperately to muffle the cries of despair, shame was again white hot present in his mind. Eddie looks shocked for about a second flat, before rushing over to Richie, grabbing his neck and pushing his head against the crook of his shoulder, rubbing his own hand up and down Richie’s back, and the other one through his hair.
‘Rich, it’s okay. You can talk to me dumbass, that’s what boyfriends are supposed to do.’
There’s nothing but silence for a few minutes, which Eddie grants Richie, just trying to get him to calm down.
‘do you ever doubt our relationship?’ Richie finally asks, feeling the way Eddie’s entire body freezes up as if he was told Pennywise was back.
Richie hurries to continue. ‘I mean, if I’d had to choose between me and Seth, I’d pick Seth too. He has a good job and I might be out of one after waiting so long to go on stage again, and I look ridicules, and I push your buttons,’ Richie takes a break to gulp in a large gush of air. ’I’m just saying, I’d get if you would want to break up with me.’
Yet, when Eddie pulls back slightly, Richie panics before letting him get too far. Eddie laughs again, still close enough that their noses are pressed together with Richie bend down the way he is.
‘Hey Rich, you’re really fucking stupid you know that?’ Eddie says with a voice so incredibly soft and fond, Richie nearly melts to a puddle. He’s still stroking curl after curl on Richie’s head, comforting him best he can when they’re in a public bathroom.
‘You’ll have a job. You’re so good at being funny Richie. Even if I don’t say that enough. Besides, let’s say you don’t, you will but just hypothetically, I don’t care about that. I only want to spend time with you. You dress like a toddler, but I like that, it makes you look goofy, just like your personality.’
With a smile that’s showing his teeth, Eddie presses a quick kiss on Richie’s mouth, pulling back fast and firing two more in rapid succession.
‘I love you Rich. Not fucking Seth, Fuck that guy. I could never want to be with him, ever. I mean it when I say I love you dickwad, despite my questionable decision, I choose you.’
Richie giggles, hearty when Eddie stands on his tippy toes to kiss his forehead, and for a moment he feels like he’s five years old. He’s glad to have Eddie, and he’s even more satisfied that Eddie wants him back. Not amnesia could stand in their way, he’s so idiotic to believe a guy from Eddie’s fucking job could.
‘Now, come on. First I have to kick Seth’s ass for making my boyfriend cry. I have to set an example here. Then we’ll go home and cuddle okay? We'll clean the salmon or whatever the fuck sentence I'm supposed to make with that and skoot on home’
Richie shakes his head negatively, ‘what about your job promotion?’
As if suddenly remembering so, Eddie grins like a cat that go the cream.
‘Don’t worry about that, I got the job.’
When they cuddle at night in their bad, after a heavy make out session, and a small skype party with the losers in honor of Eddie’s promotion, Richie falls asleep, safely knowing that Eddie was with him, and he no matter what, he wasn’t leaving.

Reviews 344: Oto No Wa
I’m overjoyed to write again about Music for Dreams’ “Serious Collector Series,” not only because this run of compilations has produced some of the best vinyl sets of the past few years in the form of Jan Schulte’s Tropical Drums of Deutschland, Moonboots’ Moments in Time, and Basso’s Proper Sunburn, but also because the newest such collection, Oto No Wa: Selected Sounds of Japan 1988 - 2018, features a trio of curators who have all influenced this blog in significant ways. Listed first on the breathtaking cover is Ken Hidaka, who in addition to having a storied career as a DJ, journalist, and international record label liaison, has had a significant hand in coordinating many of my favorite reissues from the past few years…things such as Gigi’s Illuminated Audio on Time Capsule and Yutaka Hirose’s Nova + 4 on WRWTFWW, not to mention facilitating serenitatem…that spellbinding collaboration between Yoshio Ojima, Satsuki Shibano, and Visible Cloaks released last year on RNVG Intl. Then there’s Max Essa, one of the premiere practitioners of the balearic beat, whether it’s remixing tracks into euphoric seaside cruisers or producing expansive original works such as “Panorama Suite” for Is It Balearic?, the Lanterns LP for Music for Dreams, or his recently concluded trio of EPs for Hell Yeah Recordings: Themes From The Hood, The Cad & The Lovely, Haz Zan Roc, and The Great Adventure. And finally comes Dr. Rob, a far-ranging musical adventurer and gifted wordsmith whose reviews, interviews, mixes, and stories spread across Test Pressing and Ban Ban Ton Ton showed me entirely new ways to write about music, with his expressive poetics, deep references, and inimitable sense of cleverness rising far beyond standard music criticism and going a long way towards inspiring the creation of this very website.
As far as the music comprising Oto No Wa is concerned, Dr. Rob gives some background at Ban Ban Ton Ton, where he speaks of the trio meeting after one of their Lone Star nights at Bar Bonobo and compiling an initial list of some 200 hundred fantasy selections, which was miraculously whittled down to just 20 tracks. But then, the typically unflinching Japanese record label ecosystem slashed that list to all but nothing, leading Ken, Max, and Dr. Rob to reconsider the entire experience. I like to think that this was ultimately for the better, for in reworking the concept and flow of Oto No Wa, our trio of selectors struck upon the brilliant idea to, in the words of Dr. Rob, ”plot a course from pioneers, through to younger generations who`ve picked up the baton,” resulting in a spectacular set of balearic eclecticism focused on the 90s and 00s, which are periods often missed in the world of Japanese archival reissuing. Indeed, in contrast to the environmental ambiance, city pop, fusion, and jazz so often considered, the sounds here lean much closer to the romantic seaside vibrations of Flower Records’ Silent Dream CD mixes and the Ibizan chill out comps of React, as house beats are repurposed for summer fusion sways, sun-dappled ivories seek out a panoramic horizon, strummed acoustics jangle in an island breeze, electric guitars slide across cinematic deserts, dubwise basslines stroll down white sand beaches, chamber strings play themes for impossible sunsets, and steel pans bring touches of Caribbean splendor. Elsewhere, balafons dance through tropical forests, oceanic soundbaths wash the spirit clean, deep sea explorations transmute into Berlin school magic, and ceremonial drum layers surround barely there violin reveries, with the entire experience being bookended by a pair of kankyō ongaku drifters.
Oto No Wa: Selected Sounds of Japan 1988-2018 (Music for Dreams, 2020) Yoshio Ojima’s “Sealed,” the sole track here from the 80s, comes from the second volume of the producer’s now legendary Une Collection Des Chaînons: Music For Spiral collection and sees glowing hazes moving in slow motion…these harmonious swells mimicking the motions of some celestial sea while textures of digital crystal twinkle overhead. The vibe is hopeful and soothing, though there are moments where the swelling drones turn minor key and melancholic and the glass and gemstone atmospheres get caught in hyperspeed delay trails. But we always return to the floating stretches of major key majesty, with the music perfectly suited to scoring the motions of clouds across the sky or leaves drifting down a stream. And like many of Ojima’s tracks, there is a false ending…a fade to silence preceding a rebirth, wherein the melodic textures from before are reconfigured into mysterious forms…as if the cerulean sky scene mentioned earlier has been washed out by moody grey rainclouds. The original mix of Olololop’s “Mon” revels in washy 90s post-rock atmospherics, with increasingly free ambient jazz drumming underlying cascading pianos and plucked harps. And while the “orte Remix” by Kumi Hayashi and Takaaki Suzuki preserves many of these elements, the vibe here is more oriented towards classical chill out. The beats are rigid and slamming as they lock into a mechanized seaside swing, with the original’s jazz drumming fluidity replaced by pounding kicks, panning ride taps, and sketchy shaker patterns. Piano and harp flow into the stereo field, dropping plucked rays of golden harmony and washes of ivory ethereality before settling into a balearic dreamdance, one carried by gentle trance electronics and layers of droning bass positivity. At some point the rhythms pull away and we find ourselves in an extended beatless bliss out, wherein melodies of ocean crystal pulse around melodious harp motions, abstracted kick taps flutter on echo breezes, and pan-pipes sparkle in the distance. And later, the mix reduces to an industrial downbeat drum sway and a ceremonial hum of subdued choral mesmerism as the piano continues merging vibes of new age fusion and beachside romance.
Tumblr media
Among my favorite cuts here is Kazuya Kotani’s “Fatima,” coming from the 2007 CD Made in Love. Seed shakers and rainsticks roll through echo machines, oceanic string panoramas shift in phase, and bongos and congas beat out a seaside beat as a cooing voice whispers sweet nothings in a way reminding me of Sth. Notional’s “Yawn Yawn Yawn (Dream… Another Reality Mix)”. Bulbous basslines bring touches of gentle dub exotica and a glorious chill out breakbeat swings with infectious forward momentum even as it lands like air, while pianos shimmer and shine via wavering chord mirages and prismatic delay leads that presage Coyote’s use of the instrument. The way everything locks in is so perfect, with hand drums bopping alongside the seaside breakbeat cruise and angelic strings glowing beneath sparkling ivory dreamspells…the whole thing coming together like some prototypical cut from one of José Padilla’s Cafe del Mar compilations or a Phil Mison curated Real Ibiza collection. At some point the drums pull away, leaving behind soft piano flutters, breathy whispers, and overlapping waves of orchestral resonance. And when the beats return, they are joined by heartwrenching chamber string progressions…a sort of swooning dance of cinematic sunset majesty before the track effortlessly glides back towards beachside chill out perfection. The B-side opens with “N.I.C.E. Guy” by Scha Dara Parra, who Dr. Rob describes in the liner notes as “Japan’s answer to the Beastie Boys.” The “Nice Guitar Dub” of the track presented here takes us into the world of the Major Force dance collective, and sees house kicks, hand drum loops, and clipped snares underlying lysergic repetitions of “feel good / checking things out” before dropping into a summery groove led by walking sunshine jazz bass, Hiroshi Fujiwara’s acoustic guitar strums, and Hirofumi Asamoto’s piano…a sort of ambient honky tonk cascade scoring some lagoon adjacent saloon. Occasionally, heavenly strings blow through the stereo field to envelop the vocal samples and there’s a strange midtro given over to urgent stick clicks and rimshots while towards the end, b-boy drum cut-ups and turntablist flourishes disturb the flow.
Little Tempo is an ever shifting group of dub and reggae explorers led in part by Takeshi “Tico” Toki and his shimmering steel pan. The collective has played the world over and released an impressive number of albums since the mid-90s, one of which is Ron Riddim, a 2xLP from 1999 containing the track “Frostie.” A stoner beat moves beneath a tropical panorama of steel drumming, with hi-hats occasionally opening, shekeres scraping, and snares pushing through granular reverb, and as we drop into the groove, liquid dub basslines pulse and slide while a piano glistens in the moonlight. The ivory performance is powerful and awash in twilight romance and noir mystery, sometimes dancing in solo and other times accented by glimmering steel pan flourishes. Elsewhere, the pianos are replaced by electric guitars, which let loose bluesy slides and space western leads…the mixture of desert twang and equatorial riddim strongly evoking the dubbier sides of Tortoise. There’s a moment where the track gives over to martial snare intensity as amphibian lasers and telephonic tracers fire across the sky, with the latter sound pulling my mind to the work of Eddie C. And eventually, the track settles into a sort of bluesy reggae zone out, with subsonic basslines skanking and dubwise drums smacking while wavering steel drum mirages surround spaghetti western slides in the style of Doug McCombs. Karel Arbus & Eiji Takamatsu will of course be well familiar to readers of this blog, both for their amazing Some Backland Plaze tape on Max Essa’s Jansen Jardin and for that completely stunning rework of Cantoma’s “Kasoto” from last year. “Coco and the Fish,” taken from the aforementioned cassette, sees idiophones splashing through sea spray while enigmatic electronics swirl in the background…like a vortex of kosmische wonderment pulsating in colors of deep purple and blue, one that occasionally opens up to reveal deep house chord stabs. It’s hard to say whether the main instrument played is marimba or balafon, but either way, it’s a hyperkinetic performance exuding an energy at once meditative and ecstatic...all while phaser wisps, starshine sparkles, and hidden voices swirl in the distance.
Tumblr media
I first heard globetrotting DJ and Flower Records alum Kentaro Takizawa courtesy of Phil Mison and his Pure Ibiza 2xCD set released by I Label in 2008, which included the “Silent Dream Version” of the song taken from the aforementioned Silent Dream compilation. Originally though, the track closed Takizawa’s album Gradual Life from 2006, and this is the version included here. Ride cymbals shine amidst glorious murmurations of ambient synthesis while percussive eco fx mimic the songs of lizards and toads. Elecrosnares rocket across the spectrum, beauteous acoustic guitar arps fall like summer rain, and further six-string solos move in counterpoint, with subdead leads mesmerizing the mind. As psychoactive threads of static surround decaying triangles, sundowner string orchestrations ascend towards the clouds, causing the heart to soar in that Sacha Putnam or Vangelis kind of way, and when the beat drops, it’s a lackadaisical sway led by rolling bongos and tapped cymbals. Guitars dance playfully over a backdrop of fourth world alien magic and ever so often, filmic string themes diffuse into the spectrum. Elsewhere, the drums wash away, leaving e-pianos to execute breathtaking descents before disappearing into a synthesized mirage. Rainsticsk flow over the stereo field as the track evolves even further towards new age bliss, with a harmonious conversation of acoustic guitar sunshine proceeding in a fantasy jungle, wherein sunlight reflects off of glistening palm fronds and tropical birds sing intoxicating songs. And after returning to the bopping rhythms and tapestries of chill out exotica, the tracks ends with guitars being replaced by pianos while mermaid pads whoosh through a sunbathed rainforest setting. Mystical percussionist Yoshiaki Ochi inhabited similar circles to Yoshio Ojima, releasing through NEWSIC and seeing his music played, like Ojima’s, at the arts center of Wacoal lingerie company, otherwise known as Spiral. In “Balasong,” taken from 1990’s Natural Sonic, balafons bounce playfully while executing Steve Reich-style pattenrs of minimalist exotica. The drunken daydream motions and otherworldly idiophone polyrhythms are occasionally interspersed by fast motion twiddles and rapid fire rolls, while at the edge of the mix gourds buzz and textures of metal sparkle…perhaps the ghostly chiming of temple bells.
Tumblr media
Kaoru Inoue is a hugely influential figure who for decades has been perfecting his own esoteric combination of house, techno, ambient, and spiritual world music. “Wave Introduction” was originally released on the artist’s 2006 album Slow Motion before being repurposed as the opener for one of my favorite albums ever released: Inoue’s horizontal masterpiece Em Paz released in 2018 on Groovement Organic. The track features the relaxing sounds of waves crashing to shore, joined by twinkling synths, distant foghorns, and psychosonic liquid drips, which eventually transmute into a Reich-ian dream sequence awash in textures of mermaid crystal. Undulating bass arps support slow moving pads that drift like cosmic fog while rhythmic wisps of laser static tickle the mind and the whole thing takes on the feeling of a drunken dream dance that slowly moves towards ambient rapture. The influential Flower Records and its founder Eitetsu Takamiya are represented here by the highly sought after “Scuba” under Takamiya’s Little Big Bee alias. Psychedelic bubble clouds blow over Kenji Jinguiji’s slithering bass guitar romantics and the e-pianos of Plaza Fujisaki glow with a sort of new age spirituality while Hawaiian guitars slide across a sunburst sky. A hushed house beat is accented by gentle clacks and seed shaker pulses as Jinguji’s lowslung basslines lock into a balearic fusion dance replete with vocal slides up the fretboard and as the pacific breeze guitar slides swim between solar organ dub chords, spaceage arpeggiations flitter all around. I detect a definite lean towards The Orb’s early merging of dub, ambient, and techno, with a stereo field colored through by cut-off motions, resonance flares, and whalesong pads that settle into a haze of golden light. The beats cut away momentarily, leaving filtering cosmic synthetics, pulsing organ accents, and emotive basslines while stick clicks build a rainshower rhythm. Seafoam siren synths swell in strength and subsume the entire mix as angels breath rainbow mist across universal expanses and eventually, a liquid guitar slide reintroduces the south pacific chill out groove, which now features hyperkinetic click cascades.
Coastlines, the duo of Masanori Ikeda and Takumi Kaneko, are huge favorites around here and given that I reviewed their cover of Ralph MacDonald’s “East Dry River” when it was originally released as a 7” back in 2018, I’ll present a modified version of my words from that time: Joyously ascending piano chords and deep vocal bass percussions set the scene before we smash cut into a smooth coastal fusion jam, as tambourines and toms pound beneath radiant piano strokes and synthetic steel drum dances while four four house kicks and luscious sub-basslines move the body. Angels bring touches of pure euphoria as they rain down from the sky, and elsewhere, fretless bass solos wiggle above the island rhythm dreamscape…the Motohiko Hamase-style note clusters and liquiform slides trailing under subtle ping-pong delays while colorful hand drum accents evoke slow-motion dancing on some fantasy beach. There’s a brief moment where everything washes away, leaving lush piano chords and sparkling steel pans adrift in solitude, and later, after returning to the seaside house rhythms and melodic textures of jazz fusion fantasy, we are treated again to a crazed fretless bass solo, one that grows ever more frantic and chaotic before finally dispersing. Though beloved producer Susumu Yokota is no longer with us, his memory lives on via his profound influence and his intrepid bridgings of academic ambient and techno body pressure, not to mention archival projects such as the Jon Tye-assisted Cloud Hidden from 2019. “Uchu Taniyo” is taken from Yokota’s 1999 album Sakura and begins with a voice pushing through clouds of reverb as ritualistic percussion builds from the depths. Hand drums and wooden clacks lock into a ceremonial dance kissed by cosmic fx and growling ambient forms swirl into the stereo field…these morphing tremolo gurgles imbued with atmospheres of melancholy. Voices continue babbling as a violin enters the scene, letting loose folksy melodies and post-classical whispers that barely break through the layers of rhythmic repetition. And as the track comes to an end, the exotica drum webs fade out as frogsong electronics decay into the void.
Tumblr media
The vibe continues to spread out towards horizontal ambiance in “Time and Space,” a track exclusive to this compilation from the duo of Isao Kumano and Kenichi Takagi, who are often found working with Alex from Tokyo in Tokyo Black Star, but who here appear in their “secretive” Chillax guise. Crystallized sequences, smoldering static waveforms, and hazes of ocean either intertwine as chiming melodies ascend on unseen currents towards a sun soaked sea surface, and I can’t help but think of the underwater kosmische of Iury Lech and Miguel Noya, as well as the seafloor ambient excursions of Shelter on Profondeur 4000 and Private Agenda on Île de Rêve. Soft focus chord bursts breath ambient house ether into the mix while tick-tocking arps build slowly in the background, eventually growing in strength and taking over the mix as the vibe flows from deep sea drifting to Berlin school melodrama, wherein searing filter motions surround the spirit and vocoder cyborgs chant amidst subsuming chord decays. I’ve said much about Takashi Kokubo across this blog, though thus far everything has been focused around his hugely influential Get at the Wave. And given how well mined that album is by now, I’m quite thankful that Ken, Max, and Dr. Rob have opted instead for “Quiet Inlet,” a track appearing on Kokubo’s Eternity from 2006. Waves lap gently against the shore of some hidden island scene...a place of peace and picturesque beauty known only to the fish, reptiles, and birds. A calming piano lullaby enters the scene, marrying Satie-like ambiance and Riley-ian minimalism while digital colorations and e-piano bubble clouds flit all around. A choir of angelic sirens bathe the mix in vocal radiance while bell trees mimic sunlight refractions on the ocean’s surface and after a false ending, the dreamscape ivory cascades, pointillist e-piano melodies, and heavenly choirs return, with everything shrouded by pearlescent pad layers and gaseous blankets of reverb. Windchimes blow on a sea breeze and periodic swells of mermaid magnificence work into the mix and as the sampled waves continue their motions, they lull the mind towards daydream visages of the titular seaside paraiso.

A Decade of Horror Recommendations
With 2020 approaching, we’re reaching the end of a decade that has been uncommonly good to the horror genre, especially the last few years. Here’s an overview of some of the stand-out titles and my recommendations. Feel free to ask me about any of the titles on this list and I’ll happily share my more in-depth thoughts on them!
Note that, of course, I have not seen every movie that’s come out in recent years, so I’ve probably missed some titles -- feel free to jump in with your own recommendations!
Also this post is really long and has gifs, so I’m putting it under a cut. Sorry for the dash spam, mobile fam. Tell Tumblr to fix their shit.
Tumblr media
2010: Supernatural Horror Starts Making a Comeback
Some stand-out films:
Insidious: An important film for modern horror history, helping to usher in the new wave of paranormal/hauntings/demon films. It lays the tropes for a lot of the films that would get big in upcoming years. I thought it was pretty solidly decent.
Devil: A clever script about being trapped on an elevator with the devil. It’s a bit too ambitious and doesn’t quite live up to those ambitions, but it’s solidly decent and refreshingly original. A hidden gem for the year.
Black Swan: Maybe the height of Darren Aronofsky’s career as a household name. Not my favorite of his movies, but a pretty solid psychological suspense.
Frozen: No, not that one. This is a clever movie that embraces a narrow scope: some teenagers get stuck on a ski lift and have to endure the elements and some hungry wolves below. Not a great movie, but worth watching as a study in what you can do with limited resources.
Black Death: Quick shout-out for a dark and grisly historical horror involving witchcraft and torture. It’s not a fun movie to watch, but it’s got Sean Bean and Eddie Redmayne, and I feel like both original screenplays and historical horrors are rare enough to warrant support.
2010 also had its share of predictable franchise tie-ins (a Saw movie, a Resident Evil movie, remakes like I Spit on Your Grave and The Crazies, etc.) The Horror Renaissance was a few years in coming.
Tumblr media
2011: The Year of the Predictable Remakes
So many franchises getting flogged to death this year -- tripe like SCRE4M, Final Destination 5, Human Centipede 2, a Hellraiser reboot literally no one watched, and Paranormal Activity 3. Blech. BUT. 2011 also brought us a couple of my favorite movies ever:
You’re Next: I would credit You’re Next with re-defining the “final girl” in horror. Also it’s a damn good home invasion movie with buckets of gore and a smart script.
Cabin in the Woods: This one’s a bit divisive -- some folks really hated it I guess -- but it’s such a loving deconstruction of horror, and it’s wholly original even while being comfortingly familiar. Also it’s hilarious.
Tumblr media
2012: A Few Important Titles
I feel like 2012 was full of movies nobody has actually ever seen or talked about. But some of the good ones that I’d recommend:
Sinister: Like Insidious in some ways, but maybe better.  Also, “Snakes don’t have feet.” Honestly just a very good, solid demon/haunted kid movie.
V/H/S: A must-watch for horror buffs. It didn’t invent the found footage genre, but it did refine it and really show off what it could do best.
Smiley: OK so like. This is not really a great film, but I think about it a lot and recommend it a lot. It’s stuck with me quite a bit somehow, and in some ways it feels very much ahead of its time as a creepy prediction of what internet culture would be like at the end of the decade. “We did it for the lulz.” Seriously, watch this movie today, and remember that it was made eight years ago, and see if it gives you chills too.
I guess I should also mention Prometheus here, which lots of people liked. I was not one of them, but it was a heavily talked-about film I feel like and of course an Alien franchise tie-in.
Tumblr media
2013: The Year the World Remembered It Liked Horror
This was a big turning point year, launching some new franchises instead of just re-treading old ones:
The Conjuring: I personally hate all of these movies, but they are huge and you can’t swing a dead cat in the modern horror fandom without encountering one of them. The first Conjuring film was at least decent. For extra credit, watch it as a triple feature with Insidious and Sinister and do a compare/contrast.
The Purge: Not only the start of a successful franchise but also a pop culture phenomenon and a damn good movie to boot.
Mama: I love this movie. I have this movie on DVD. It’s kind of bittersweet and may not completely follow through on all of its promises, but it’s still quite good and has some lovely performances.
Warm Bodies: Not really a horror -- kind of a romance -- but it warrants mention here because zombies were a hot item in 2013, and that’s a current special interest of mine on account of having a zombie book of my own coming out that is more than a little influenced by this story. (the film is a pretty good adaptation of the book, although honestly you could just skip the movie and read the book and get a better experience.)
Willow Creek: I feel like I recommend this movie a lot, but that’s just because I think it’s very good and a very smart use of its own resources. A found footage mockumentary that actually manages to make Bigfoot frightening. Totally worth the watch.
Mr. Jones: Here’s another hidden gem, also in found footage style (I feel like that was a prevailing theme in the years after V/H/S) but it’s surprisingly fresh. It’s a folk horror piece that doesn’t go at all where you might expect despite its thoroughly well-trodden ‘couple in secluded house’ setup.
A bucketful of remakes and sequels this year too, including an Evil Dead reboot, V/H/S sequel, Insidious sequel, etc.  I should also probably mention World War Z, which was not actually very good and also had nothing in common with the book of the same name, but does mark an important moment in the mainstreaming of the zombie revival, especially considering it came out the same year as Warm Bodies.
Tumblr media
2014: Fuck Yeah People Actually Like This Shit Let’s Make More
I feel like maybe our current horror renaissance started this year. Some recs:
The Babadook: No surprises to anyone who follows my blog, but I love The Babadook and I will defend it to the bitter end against its detractors. It is one of my favorite horror films of all time and one of the best of the decade.
It Follows: Ok confession, I actually did not like this movie at all. I thought it was ridiculous and over-hyped. But it makes the list because a lot of other people really, really loved it, and I accept that they saw something in it that I didn’t. Watch it and make up your own mind (and report back with your findings).
As Above, So Below: This may be the most claustrophobic film ever made, and it deserves to be studied on that merit alone. It’s also pretty creepy and I suspect a lot creepier for folks who are unnerved by Christian horror/mythology (I am not, but I know lots of folks really are).
Housebound: A hidden gem from New Zealand, this one is worth a watch because it takes a familiar haunted house premise and gives it a surprising and honestly delightful twist.
Jessabelle: Not a great movie, but deserving of a spot here because it’s a Southern Gothic and features a main character in a wheelchair, which I think is neat.
13 Sins: I feel like I’ve written about this movie for the blog before, and I recommend it a lot. But it’s clever and is a great early example of the “killing game” genre that has become increasingly prevalent (I mean, aside from the Battle Royale/Hunger Games version).
It was neat to see so many original horror stories (as opposed to reboots/franchises) coming out, and that’s a trend that would continue (and is something that makes horror one of my preferred genres - there are more original stories in it than in many other types of film).
Tumblr media
2015: Hell Yeah Let’s Ride This Horror Train
So many excellent movies this year! Ahh!
Crimson Peak: Guillermo del Toro’s love letter to the Gothic. What I love about this movie (aside from Tom Hiddleston) is it plays all the tropes straight. It’s not trying to be a new spin or reinvent the genre or break all the tropes. It’s just a gothic horror story, told exactly like what it is, by a guy who makes damn good movies. I felt like that was really brave and surprising at the time.
The Visit: M. Night Shyamalan had basically made a joke of himself after a string of awful movies, but this movie was enough to earn back a bit of respect in my book. It’s a clever premise and a smart use of found footage.
The VVitch: Creepy-ass slow-burn supernatural historical horror, sign me up. I actually don’t like this movie as much as a lot of people (see above: religious-themed horror doesn’t push my fear buttons much) but it’s beautifully made, thoughtful, and artistic in a way that makes people sit up and pay attention to just how good the horror genre can be.
Krampus: This movie is extremely silly and I love it. A holiday favorite I watch every year now. It’s hilarious, and imaginative, with some really creepy visuals and a thoroughly satisfying conclusion.
The Invitation: For me, some of my favorite horror movies are the ones where the film is uncomfortable to watch before the actual horror stuff starts up. This one has an almost unbearably tense build-up and pays off in an incredibly satisfying and creepy manner.
Tumblr media
2016: Horror Goes Hella Mainstream
I feel like 2016 was another year of just...lots of kind of fun unique premises tossed out like spaghetti to see what would stick. And I am here for it.
Don’t Breathe: Home invasion gone wrong is a great trope, and this one gets extra points for having the single most disturbing sequence utilizing a turkey baster I’ve ever seen in film.
Hush: Speaking of home invasions. This one is pretty standard fare -- homeowner fights back! -- but the deaf main character is a neat twist.
Lights Out: It’s pretty cheesy at times and the plot sort of falls in on itself, but the opening sequence is genuinely frightening and the movie almost literally killed @comicreliefmorlock so that’s a commendation I guess?
Train to Busan: An Asian take on the zombie survival story. It’s a really good movie (if horribly bleak) and it does such an excellent job of making you genuinely care for all of the characters.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe: A really neat premise with some wonderful slow-build horror. The storyline kind of goes off the rails, and it asks a lot of questions it doesn’t answer, but it’s quite good regardless.
The Forest: I was disappointed with this one -- it just failed to live up to my expectations -- but it’s decent, and it’s a good attempt at capturing the creepiness of Japan’s Suicide Forest.
Before I Wake: This one was sad more than scary, I thought, but it fits so neatly into a certain aesthetic that I am always a sucker for -- dreams and nightmares bleeding into reality, yes please.
Split: Say what you will, I thought Split was amazing, and James McAvoy deserves a goddamn Oscar for his performance in this movie.
The Monster: A hidden gem that’s worth watching to see how well it delivers on its premise: two characters stuck in a car with a monster outside. It’s not amazing, but it’s neat, and sometimes it’s nice to have just a straightforward creature feature with a bit of emotional heft for good measure.

2017: Did Somebody Say Blockbuster?
In hindsight, they’ll probably say 2017 was the start of the horror renaissance, but we’ll all know they’re a few years too late. Still, this was another great year:
Get Out: Funny, dark, deeply uncomfortable and with some real meat to it -- Jordan Peele knows how to make a great movie. This absolutely deserves all the awards.
It: Not a perfect movie, but a good adaptation of a difficult-to-adapt book. The kids are great. Pennywise is menacing, but that fucking flute lady is the scariest part.
It Comes At Night: I didn’t like this one much, but a lot of folks did so it makes the list. See above re: It Follows.
Gerald’s Game: Everything that’s wrong with this movie (ie, the ending) is wrong in the original story, so where this movie fails it’s a matter of sticking too close to its source material. But the premise is truly, genuinely horrifying, and the degloving scene almost made me vomit. So that’s cool.
Happy Death Day: Another horror-comedy, with a healthy dose of self-awareness. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s what allows it to be fun.
The Babysitter: This movie is hilarious. It’s also super bloody and clever and clearly made by people who love slashers, and the affection shows.
The Ritual: So-so in the acting and pacing, but the creature design is A+ and the concept is really neat. Seriously just watch this one for the monster, it’s super cool looking.
I should probably mention Mother here, but I can’t speak for it as I haven’t gotten around to watching it yet. It’s a very divisive film. One of these days I’ll watch it and let you know.
Tumblr media
2018: There’s More Where That Came From
If 2016 was the year of filmmakers just trying stuff for the hell of it, 2018 was the year of talented filmmakers and studios realizing that, oh shit, you can make really good horror movies with mass appeal.
A Quiet Place: I’m glad I caught this one in theaters, because it really deserves to be watched in a dark, quiet room where no one dares to make a sound. The ending left a lot to be desired, but it was a clever premise.
Hereditary: The best horror movie of the year imo. Painfully uncomfortable - I’m not sure I could watch it again - but highly recommended.
Apostle: Watch this one in a triple-feature with The VVitch and Hereditary. A really good period piece with a character you actually want to root for.
Bird Box: I didn’t like this movie much, but it was hugely popular. I bought the book recently and suspect it is much better. Still, it’s worth a mention for its impact on mainstream viewers (lots of people who don’t like horror really liked this movie). I won’t budge from my initial opinion that it’s just A Quiet Place meets The Happening, though.

What Does 2019 Hold?
We’re only halfway through the year, so we’ve got some time to see what is coming down the pipe. Lots of things to look forward to! But some solid titles so far this year that I’d heartily recommend:
Us: Jordan Peele is at it again. It may not be as good as Get Out  -- there’s some plot holes where the internal logic of the world is at odds with the message it’s trying to send -- but it’s thoughtful and gives plenty to chew on. And there are places where it’s just unbearably tense and creepy.
Brightburn: I had high hopes for this movie and was not disappointed. This is a super (ha, ha) good film.
The Wind: A Gothic on the American frontier. It accomplishes what I think It Comes At Night was supposed to do, but more effectively (for me anyway). Bonus points for being written and directed by women. Double bonus: Caitlin Gerard, the main actress, is also the lead character in Smiley.
I have not yet watched Velvet Buzzsaw, Ma or Midsommar this year, but I really want to. I’m also looking forward to the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark film despite having some reservations about the whole concept.

Promises - Part One
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: I do not own or claim to own any canon characters in this fanfiction, I do claim ownership of the original characters featured and mentioned in this work. This is an au / alternate timeline fanfiction for the TNT drama Animal Kingdom and will feature characters and events from that show. ( This is a rewrite of promises part one, which i posted a few months ago. I went back and reread it, and absolutely hated it, so here we go, hopefully this is better ).  (gifs and photos are not mine unless stated otherwise. this gif belongs to the lovely @demctozdemir and can be found here ).
Summary: Marley Dossier is lost. Her mother has just been arrested, her dead beat father won't pick up the phone, and her grandmother wants nothing to do with her. Unsure of what else to do, she tracks down her childhood friend, J Cody. Little does she know, she's going right back into the world her mother fought so hard to keep her from, and the world that destroyed her family before it even started. | This fanfiction takes place six months after the death of nineteen year old J Cody's mother Julia. J and his best friend Marley have been reunited, though their reunion might bring more heartache than either can handle.
Content Warning: Mentions of Absentee parents, drug abuse, jail/prison, homelessness. | My main character Marley is in a wheelchair, please keep that in mind.
Word Count: 1.5k
The hot California sun beat down on me and my muscles throbbed in protest. He better fucking live here. The house was nice, which made me think I had the wrong place. Those suspicions were confirmed as I approached the front door. An older woman, probably in her sixties, came out the front door before I even had a chance to knock. Dressed in those obnoxious printed yoga pants with short blonde hair and oversized sunglasses she reminded me of one of those "cool" grandma's you saw on tv.
"Can I help you?" She looked me over. Starting at my slightly worn sneakers to my braided hair. She barely stopped to take in the wheelchair, which honestly surprised me.
"I'm sorry, I think I have the wrong place." Turning away, I didn't get far before a familiar voice brought my attention back.
"Marley?" I turned to see him, a smile erupted over my face. It was so good to see him, especially since I hadn't seen a familiar (nevermind friendly) face in over a week.
"Hey J..." He didn't look half as happy to see me as I was to see him.
"What are you doing here?" His question confirmed it. He didn't want me here, and I couldn't help the confusion and hurt that worked its way into my chest.
"Well, you stopped visiting, so I thought I'd come out here, see if you were still alive." I didn't want to tell him the real reason, not yet.
"Uh, Smurf...This is Marley, she and I grew up together." He introduced me to the older woman, who'd taken a step closer to me. She reached out her hand, and I offered mine. She didn't shake it, instead, she just gave it a gentle squeeze and gave me a smile.
"He's being modest. Our moms actually used to do smack together."
"Marley, this is my grandmother. Smurf." Shit, I just insulted this woman's dead daughter. Instead of appearing insulted, she just nodded, her smile growing slightly before letting go of my hand.
"You kids hungry? I'll go and make you two something to eat." Before either of us could answer, she disappeared into the house.
"So did you really come all this way just to check on me?" He questioned once she was gone. I contemplated lying to him but realized there wasn't any use, he'd have seen right through it.
"It's a long story, so I hope you've got time."
"Credit card fraud? How did that even happen?" I'd just got done telling him all the gory details of my mom getting arrested and charged with credit card fraud. We were sitting in the backyard, his feet dangling in the pool. "And this all happened two months ago? Why didn't you call me?"
"I tried. Your number was disconnected or something." I leaned back in my chair, looking him over for a moment. "She was dating this guy Jimmy, you know, the manager at the restaurant. He's a real piece of shit. He was running some fraud scheme and she got caught up in it." I wasn't defending my mom. She'd been stupid, but if Jimmy hadn't dragged her into his shit she'd have never been arrested. "Her lawyer's advising she take a plea deal."
"And how much time is she looking at?" His question had an answer I didn't want to think about.
"Five years. Minimum." I sighed, leaning forward. "I can't believe this shit. The relapse, now this."
       "Relapse?"
"Oh. I didn't tell you about that." I took a deep breath, staring down at my hands. "Yeah, about five months back, less than a month after your mom died...I got a call from the hospital. She relapsed. Clean eight years and then that shit."
       "Why didn't you call me?"
"Cause your mom just ODed and died. You had enough stuff to deal with." I finally glanced up at him. "Besides, we weren't really talking."
"Where are you staying?" He asked, changing the subject, which I was grateful for.
"I was staying with Claudia. But she kicked me out after realizing I wasn't going to be able to pay rent." Claudia, my grandmother (if one can even call her that) hadn't wanted me there in the first place. "Rita let me stay at her place, but her grandkids needed the room cause her daughter got evicted. I tried contacting Charlie-" My dead beat dad. "But he didn't even bother picking up the phone. So, this past week I've been at that shelter over on Granger."
"Shelter?" He stared at me for a moment. I could almost see the gears in his brain working to solve my problems, something he'd done since we were kids. "What about your uncle Eddie?"
"Eddie's in New Mexico or something. I haven't heard from him in weeks. But don't worry, I'll figure it out." I take his hand in mine, glancing down at his knuckles. Bruised, which wasn't anything new. "You can't fix all my problems J, and I not here because I need you to. I'm here because I've missed you, and I needed a familiar face."
He didn't get a chance to answer before Smurf popped her head out the sliding glass door beside us. "You kids come inside, I've got lunch on the table."
The house was nice. Way nicer than anywhere I've ever lived. Nicer than anywhere J's ever lived too. For as long as I could remember, J's lived in the shitty apartment above the one me and my mom lived in.
"Thanks for the food, Mrs. Cody." I leaned back in my chair, popping the last potato chip on my plate into my mouth. I couldn't help but stare at the place. The kitchen and living room itself was almost as big as my apartment.
"Call me Smurf." She sat down at the table beside me, and I gave her a smile. "And you're welcome." I glanced over at J, who seemed to be watching us closely. I furrowed my brow, and he just shook his head.
"So, how long have you two know each other."
"Almost twelve years." It was so weird to say out loud. "Me and my mom lived in the apartment below him and Julia."
"And how long have you two been dating?"
"We're not." J and I spoke in unison. He looked to each other, a small smile forming on both of our faces.
"We're friends. Best friends." Thankfully, someone opened the sliding door, breaking the awkwardness.
"You fucking asshole." I glanced behind me. Holy shit. The person I should have been thanking for breaking the awkward silence was...hot...And covered in bright orange and blue paint splatters. Dark hair, tattoos, facial hair. I probably should have checked to make sure I wasn't drooling.
"Oh Craig, did your brother shoot you with the paintball gun again?" I didn't have to know Smurf well to detect the mock concern in her voice.
The door opened again, and another guy, blonde, definitely shorter than the other one, and also covered in paint came inside. "Don't even think about crying to Smurf. You shot me first."
"Twice. You literally emptied yours into my back." He turned around, revealing large red welts on his back.
"Don't start shit you can't finish." At that comment, the taller one, Craig, grabbed the blonde around the neck, putting him into a chokehold.
"Boys, enough. Can't you see we have a guest." They stopped, both looking down at me. The blonde just stared a moment, but the brunette managed to muster a small smile.
"Who's this?" He asked, staring at me long enough that I could feel my face heating. Jesus, stop acting like you've never seen an attractive guy before.
"I'm Marley, J's friend." I offered a small smile to both him and the blonde, but neither of them smiled back. Instead, the blonde when to the fridge, and the brunette continued to stare at me.
"Jesus Craig, you look like you've never seen anyone in a wheelchair before," J commented. He's done in it the past, especially when we were in high school. Anyone who looked my way wrong heard it.
The blonde snickered, and the brunette turned away from me, also heading towards the fridge. "What're you making for dinner?" He grabbed a beer, tossing the cap into the sink.
"We're having salmon. Marley, are you staying for dinner?"
"Actually I have to get back." I looked at J, "Do you think you could give me a ride? I'm pretty sure my arms are going to be spaghetti tomorrow from the way over here."
"Do you still live in J's old building?" Smurf asked.
"Actually no." I wondered exactly how much more I wanted to say in front of a bunch of strangers. "I'm actually in-between places right now. There's this...Home, I'm staying at that has a curfew."
"Like a shelter?" She questioned, and before I could answer, "Why don't you stay here until your new place is ready?"
"That's probably not a good idea," J answered before I could.
"Of course it is. You don't want your friend staying in a shelter, do you?"
       "I don't want to be a bother."
"Of course not. You're staying, end of discussion. I'll get the couch set up for you. Do you have anything you need to go get?"
"No. All of my stuff is with one of my mom's friends." She got up, leaving the kitchen.
"What just happened?" I asked, watching after her.
"Smurf." J didn't seem happy, "Smurf happened."

Hey! Do you remember the meaning of the crickets Eddie and Myra heard under their house? I'm rereading the book and I can't remember. Love your content 💗
@violetti-spaghetti wrote a post about the crickets that was really good - here is their post and here is the same post with my addition to it.
So the crickets probably represent, in one way or another, Eddie’s marriage being built on a lie that he tries to keep hidden away and also possibly his inability to like, ‘perform’ in that marriage (they’re in the basement, disrupting the foundation of the house aka the marriage, and they make noise at night, disrupting a time when couples are typically intimate). I really can’t summarize it in a way that matches the perfection of that original post, so definitely give it a read!

Eddie Kaspbrak does not manage his own Twitter account, andtherefore he does not immediately know when the news breaks.
It’s a Thursday, sometime in May. He’s not particularly keepingtrack of the date because his latest project is in post-production and he’s notdue back on set until late July. Six whole weeks without obligation. He’s treatingit as something of a vacation – not necessarily because he wants to, butbecause Stan refused to send him another script until he swore to take it easy.
So, he’s taking it easy.
He rarely has the time to cook for himself these days, so he’smaking breakfast. What was originally an omelet has turned into scrambled eggs, made colorful by diced up green peppers and red onions and ham. He takes apicture, uploads it to Instagram – the one social media he handles himself –and then doctors his plate with hot sauce and sour cream.
He eats outside on the porch because the weather’s nice. Theweather is always nice in Los Angeles. It’s nothing like back home, where itwas mostly cold or mostly wet or mostly cloudy. He misses New York sometimes, but not now. Now he’s more than happy to stretch his bare legs out into the sunshine.
It’s probably too hot to wear black, but Eddie can’t be bothered to changehis shirt. It’s the same shirt he always wears around the house, an old bandtee that does not belong to him. Richie left it behind a couple of years ago, like the egotistical bastard he is – because, really, who wears their own band’smerchandise unironically? Richie insists it’s pride, not narcissism, but Eddiemakes fun of him for it regardless.
Richie plays guitar for Gunslinger,a surprisingly successful neo-punk band. Their last amphitheater tour sold outwithin the hour, and the window display of the Hollywood & Highland HotTopic is entirely dedicated to them. Eddie only knows this because Richie snapchattedhim a picture of it, insisting it was the peak of his career.
Eddie and Richie have known each other for awhile. It started withBeverly. Bev Marsh was the wardrobe supervisor for one of the first moviesEddie ever filmed. She’s a small firecracker of a woman, taller than Eddie onlybecause of her heeled boots, all red hair and orange lipstick and black humor. Shemoved to California from Chicago the year before, and spent her first fewmonths in the city searching for coffee that suited her New England tastes. Whenshe met Eddie, she was more than happy to share her secret. The tiny coffeeshopin Pasadena had a quiet little bookstore attached, and both were owned by MikeHanlon, the kind of man who was successful enough to hire someone to manage hisestablishment but who insisted on doing it himself. He was originally fromMaine, but his accent had been muted by years in the city and he teased Eddierelentlessly for the way he pronounced cawfee.
Bill Denbrough spent most of his afternoons in that coffeeshoptyping rapidly on his laptop, and Bev, who had never met a stranger, eventuallyroped him into their conversation. He was sweet and sensitive and painfully heterosexual, exactly the kind of boy Eddie would have had a crush on in high school. Eddieliked him in spite of this.
Bill’s roommate was Ben Hanscom, a man even sweeter and shyer thanBill, who wrote poetry and played the bass guitar and knew more about the city’sarchitecture than the rest of them put together. He was the entire reason theapartment he shared with Bill was decorated with any modicum of taste. Ben couldbe best described as a good man: well-kempt, polite, and honorable.
Ben introduced them all to his bandmate Richie, and Richie… wasnone of those things.
Richie was a shock to the system. He was loud, and his presencewas huge, as big as his hands and hisstupid glasses. He towered over Eddie – well, he towered over most everyone, but especially Eddie – and he used some iteration of fuck in almost every sentence. He was painfully unstylish, and hishair was perpetually swept up into a messy bun, sometimes with flowers orribbons laced through it. He wore Velcro shoes so often that none of them werereally sure he knew how to tie his laces. He liked to get drunk off fruity drinksand flirt with anyone who looked his way.
Eddie adored him.
They had become friends almost on sight. Since they met, most ofEddie’s time in Los Angeles has involved Richie in some way.
It’s a little different, now that they’re both famous.
It’s a little different, now that they’re sleeping together.
Well, to be fair, they’ve been sleeping together for a long time, but. No one knows, not even their friends. Eddie has been very careful aboutthat. It’s just not the sort of publicity he needs.
So, when Beverly calls him that sunny Thursday morning, the lastthing he expects her to say is, “You’refucking Richie?”
