— It must be done by one who loved her in life. — I only liked her. — Close enough!

Mel Brooks as Van Helsing, somehow managing to be more accurate than most adaptations:

I just rewatched Dracula: Dead and Loving It and it’s as hilarious as I remember! I had a mini VHS collection of vampire movies I recorded from TV as a teenager and this was one of my favourites (my most favourite one was Shadow of the Vampire).
It’s mostly a parody of the 1931 film even though it tries to resemble Coppola’s Dracula, but I have a feeling Mel Brooks didn’t like it much, same as I.
It’s not book accurate, but it holds up very well as a concise story which is rare with similar comedies, although, well, it’s by Mel Brooks who is great for a reason. Multiple scenes had me laughing outloud even though I know how they go. (Fushta is my favourite joke. Chardash too.)
Peter MacNicol as Renfield was absolutely priceless. The only other part I remember him in was the henchman in Ghostbusters II. What a weird way to be a typecast.
Mel Brooks will always be my Van Helsing, despite my deep love for Peter Cushing in that part. He’s petty, confident and aware of being the only smart person in the room.
If you like jokes about the English being repressed, I really recommend this film.
