Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs (1954) proposed a five-tier model of human needs, depicted as the hierarchical levels of a pyramid. The first tier are physiological: air, water, food, and shelter. Then come the essentials of safety: personal security, employment, and resources. Third are needs of love and belonging: friendship, intimacy, and a sense of connection. Then there is esteem: status, recognition, strength, and freedom. And finally, it asserts, comes self-actualization: the desire to become the most one can be. This makes a lot of sense.
But not, we would argue, total sense. Because whoever this Maslow guy is, whatever his credentials, he was clearly deprived of the daily nourishment that @only-cat-memes can provide. Shelter, intimacy, status, employment et al. are all well and good—but it is evident Maslow was deprived of shark cat plushies, 4x4 images of the famous "Kitty Stretch," or four kittens investigating the inner workings of a 90s PC :(
