If you had to eat a bug, and it has to be living and at least an inch big, what bug would you feel the most comfortable eating?
I’ve had crickets and scorpion before but they were cooked and crispy.
Hmm…
Would larvae count? Could I just eat a non-poisonous caterpillar?

nah, you've got to explain what crawfish dip is now
i kind of figured i would wake up to at least one of these? i wasn’t expecting you to ask tho.
damnit ivy 😂
okay so i don’t know if other people eat it around here or if it’s just something my dads mom came up with but it’s literally just mayo, ketchup, and yellow mustard mixed together.. sometimes i’ll add hot sauce or sometimes i’ll add minced garlic and a little of the juice that comes out of the jar. just depends on what i have at the time.. i’ve been doing garlic bc i havnt had hot sauce in a minute.
i call it crawfish dip bc when we have crawfish boils at the house it’s a thing that’s always been on the table.. along side butter for the potatoes and corn that are also in said crawfish boil.

warnings: angst, fluff, hurt/comfort, manipulation of someone's feelings, hypothermia which I did my best to research, near death experiences, reader has familial issues, mental illness, self-hate, terms of endearment, backstory heavy, no use of y/n, unedited, the love triangle that was never really a love triangle

“What do you think would have happened if this never happened to us, if it was just you and me, at home?" Conway’s voice pierced through the night air, you could hear every breath as you laid on his shoulder. Desperate for some type of body heat.
A question that you could answer truthfully, “Eventually we would have gotten married and you'd have taken over your family business, your sisters and I would have absolutely made the most out of everyone in the marketplace.” As much as it hurt you to think about, you doubted Finnick would have come back to you if none of this had occurred. He'd leave you alone to “protect you" as he claimed without an obvious reason and your love would have faded into an unfinished fairytale of what could have been in the back of your mind. You hated to think about it, but Conway was the person you would settle to be with if you couldn't have the love you wanted.
“You really think so?" His fingers were tracing something on your sleeve that you weren't focused enough on to try and decipher. “My family, everyone at school always thought so, but you could have anyone you wanted." No you couldn't, the person you'd wanted most in the world had pushed you away, the only person your soul ached for.
“You could've had anyone to Conway."
“No, I couldn't have." He shook his head with a bitter smile.
“Yeah, who was that one girl?" You scrunched your eyes shut trying to recall her name, “Meena!” Your eyes snapped open,"You dated Meena, she was sweet.”
"Only to try and make you jealous.” He muttered, softly. Finnick had always remarked how Meena looked like you, how Conway was unbelievably entranced by you, for reasons you'd never understand. You didn't know what to say back, it hadn't worked, you'd actually been ecstatic for him to have found someone. "I wouldn't have picked Meena.” He wanted you to say you wouldn't have picked Finnick, you could tell, but you couldn't say that.
"Then, it would've been you and me, and I would have driven you mad.” You averted, giving a breathless laugh.
There was a glimmer in his sad eyes and he gave a slight smile,"No you wouldn't have.”
You smiled and nodded, "Oh I would have, I'd want to do this and that, when all you wanted was to stay home. Then you'd want to go crawfishing and I'd grumble to stay in bed.” It would have been good enough, satisfying enough, but it would never be what you and Finnick could've had. You were both creatures of extraversion, you'd go where he went and make do, if he wanted to fish you'd go along to read or let him convince you to join, if you absolutely refused he'd eventually yield to you. If you'd decided to rot away in your head Conway would desperately want to help, but Finnick would, he'd take care of you, but also force you out of it. If Finnick was everything you needed, everything you wanted, everything you yearned for, Conway was perfect for everybody else.
“That would've been okay with me." Okay. Not like puzzle pieces fitting together, just two books sitting by one another. “Kids?" There was the other thing, Conway would be a great father and needed to be in a sense, but it scared you. How could you raise a child if they were constantly close to being thrown into the predicament you were in now? You would have loved to have kids if the government was different, if none of these chains were locking that up, and Finnick was the same. Children would be perfect in another world, another time.
Yet you humored him, “How many?" No kids would be in danger since both of you wouldn't be able to come out of this alive.
“Four?" Conway leaned tilted his head to the sky, “Two boys, two girls."
“Five, three girls, two boys, take it or leave it." If you tried hard enough you could somewhat convince yourself it was just the two of you, back home, living the life everyone expected you to live. To imagine you'd just settled. He was handsome, so handsome any girl would have adored him, he was sweet and hardworking. His family cared so deeply and was basically your own. The universe stretched itself thin for you and Finnick, if it stayed still it would've been you and Conway.
He laughed and looked back at you, “I'll take it, any day, I would have taken it." He had to know, if you got out you would run right back to him, but the fantasy was better than thinking about that, at least it was easier at some points to tell yourself Conway knew. “Would you take care of my family?" He whispered, face settling into some type of seriousness.
“Of course I would." Even if you'd never be able to look at them again after what you were doing which they surely knew about, you would pour as much money into their pockets as you could.
He looked away from you, his eyes glossy with unshed tears as he stared into the dark. Like he was ashamed to say what he was going to, “It's just, it's always been all of us. They begged me to come home and I don't know, I don't know what I'm supposed to do. And you-" Conway choked on whatever he was going to say, “I'm sorry, I don't want to be an ass, I'm just trying to be honest." He wiped his face of the tears that weren't even falling, but you could see it all on his face. It made you absolutely ill with yourself, he was right, his family was so tight-knit it would be a major hit to all of them if he was gone. Yet here you were playing with him like some sort of toy to get you to the top. He was spilling all of his heart to you, saying what was hard to say and you pulled strings. You buried your face in your freezing hands.
“It's okay." Your voice was muffled, eventually pulling away as you looked at him. “You're right, you don't have to say it. But even if they aren't like yours it doesn't mean they don't need me, I'm the one in the markets, Conway. Mom’s too sick to do it, Dad has to go out and work, and Avonlea has to take care of Mom. No one else is going to do it and they wouldn't have to worry about that anymore.”
It was unsaid that even if that happened it didn't mean you'd break the seemingly impenetrable walls of their bond, a trio you weren't meant for. Maybe it wasn't worth it, if you got out you'd help them, but wouldn't be part of their team, you wouldn't be able to look at Conway’s family without being eaten by guilt on the spot, your best friend would be dead and it would be your fault, all you'd really have is Finnick. But maybe that was enough for how desperately your soul longed for him.
“I'm sorry."
“It's not your fault." You didn't blame the Games either, as far as you were concerned you were the only one to blame. You didn't know when you'd begun to cry, but the way the biting cold hit your wet face made you shiver.
Then his arms were pulling you closer, “No, that was wrong of me, I didn't want to make you cry. Your family is just as important as mine." That only made you cry more. If you weren't so unpleasable you could have been content with him, happy even, that wouldn't have stopped this from happening, but maybe you would have felt less guilty or let yourself die with him, the way you would die for Finnick.
“You're too good to me, Conway. Much too good, you deserve a Meena." You were trying to wipe away your tears, but they were coming much too quick.
" I don't want a Meena.” Then his lips were on yours and for a second it was comforting, which only fueled your nausea. It didn't matter that you were young and confused because you knew he wasn't the one, that this had been what you wanted from him just so you could be with someone else. That beautiful, kind Conway was a means to an end and this was all supposed to end one way.
𓈒⠀𓂃⠀⠀˖⠀𓇬⠀˖⠀⠀𓂃⠀𓈒
It was hot, sweat was clinging to your skin, and your head still stung. You almost couldn't bear to be too close to Finnick and his unnatural heat that was usually so comforting, but he was hovering around you so much that it was nearly impossible to get a few steps away as you all ran through the jungle. Cannons began booming off one by one as everyone finally decided to sit down. There was more guilt this time, most of these people you knew pretty well and had spent time with in some capacity over the years. Even if you hadn't killed any of them, you were still alive when they were gone, how was that fair? Nothing was, nothing had been for so long, never in your lifetime.
“I guess we're not holding hands anymore." Finnick laughed and it caught you so off guard that you couldn't help it when your scoff turned into a laugh as well. Hitting your forehead on his shoulder. The irony of it all, how you'd held hands in solidarity against the Capitol only to tear each other's throats out down here.
“You think that's funny?" Katniss asked, you understood why she was so appalled by his comment, you truly did, but his comments had always evened out your thoughts before they became all consuming. His humor brought light to the dark.
"Just a little bit.” You demonstrated with your fingers, even though it was definitely more than that.
“Everytime that cannon goes off it's music to my ears. I don't care about any of them.” He pointed at the sky, shrugging his shoulders.
“Good to hear." Katniss pulled some weapon out of her quiver to point his way. You couldn't help yourself when you tossed one of your knives up to catch it, as badly as you needed Katniss out of the arena you wouldn't let her attack Finnick. Even if he could defend himself, which he demonstrated perfectly well as he held his trident right back at her. At the end of the day you two were still the team, you could only get her out if she'd cooperate and it would be very unlikely if she went for Finnick that she'd trust anybody after that.
“Wanna face the Career pack alone? What would Haymitch say?" Finnick’s brow quirked, you briefly made eye contact with Peeta. He looked so uncomfortable, looking for an opportunity to decrease the tension.
“Haymitch isn't here." Katniss replied, not backing down. Peeta began to stand.
"Let's keep moving.” His voice broke the tension when Katniss stood as well, maintaining her own eye contact with Finnick, she looked so untrusting, so angry. Finnick grabbed your free hand as you stood. Then he was behind you, slightly grabbing the back of your head.
“We should have cleaned it, you could get an infection." Finnick frowned.
“I'll be fine, Finnick." You smiled, it wasn't like the plan was supposed to take longer than a couple days. You doubted you would die of an infection in that time. Planting a light kiss on his cheek before you tugged his hand to keep walking.
“Let's not tempt the fates." He muttered, silently insisting to be the one who pulled you along instead. Peeta was cutting down the vines as you all walked forwards, making way to see ahead. You glanced at Finnick, how could he still be so breathtaking when he was dripping with sweat? Maybe you were too lovesick for disgust at this point, but it amazed how despite all the grime the bronze of his skin still shone and you would have bet people would still line up for a minute of his time.
“Take a picture, it'll last longer." He flashed those pearly whites at you and you rolled your eyes despite feeling your cheeks get somehow hotter.
“You're a real comedian, Odair, I'll give you that. I mean I'm basically dying of laughter." You deadpanned, rather unsuccessfully, when you stumbled over some branch. Finnick's hand helped you maintain balance, but he was laughing at you just as quick.
“Angel, you don't need to fall for me, I'm already your husband. There's really no need to be so desperate." You playfully hit him.
“And you're just so helpful, I could have died.” You shrugged, over exaggerating as much as you probably could.
"That would have been a rather pathetic way to go, don't you think?” He teased, "And after all that talk about how you could take care of yourself.” Finnick tutted and you shoved his shoulder again.
Katniss' scream instantly tore you out of the moment," Peeta, no!” The machete hit some sort of forcefield ahead and he flew back, roughly hitting the jungle floor. She was immediately scrambling for him, grabbing his face. “Peeta?" Her voice shook and it hit you that maybe it wasn't an act like you and Finnick had theorized, maybe the bare bones of it all showed there was a pure, raw love there even if it didn't always seem that convincing to people who weren't Capitol citizens desperate to eat up any act. “He's not breathing. He's not breathing, he's not breathing! Peeta!” Katniss cried out and Finnick immediately ran to him, pushing Katniss away.
She'd pulled out her bow when you ran up, “Katniss he's just trying to help." You put your hands up as you slowly approached her, she looked panicked, confused and Finnick's lips were on Peeta’s. It looked like her brain was running so fast it hadn't even registered that it was CPR. Finally it looked like it had clicked and she put the bow down, running back over Peeta. You followed, cautiously placing your hand on her shoulders. “It's okay, he's gonna be okay.” You couldn't know that, but it was all you could think to say.
“Peeta, Peeta." She was begging, voice trembling and you saw yourself in her. You'd be the same way if anything happened to Finnick, her desperation proved to you that beyond all else she truly was in love with the boy from the arena.
“Come on Peeta." Finnick said gruffly, doing rough compressions on his seemingly limp body.
“Peeta, please wake up." Katniss was cradling his head and you squeezed her shoulder trying to be as reassuring as you could.
“He will, Katniss, he will." You nodded mostly to yourself. Her body was shaking from her tears.
"Please wake up.” Her body rocked back and forth as Finnick muttered continuous "come on’s,” continuing his attempt to revive Peeta. Suddenly he was gasping for air and Finnick sighed in relief. “Peeta! Oh my god!”
“Be careful, there's a forcefield up there.” Peeta said softly and Katniss laughed through the tears before kissing him. By now you doubted anyone could think their love was all a performance, it made you want to cry as well. Finnick's hand slid back into yours, squeezing it. Telling you that you were in fact on the same page, it amazed you how with looks and touches it was as if nearly every thought the two of you shared could be communicated.
“Oh my god, you were dead. You were dead, your heart stopped.” She stroked his hair, like she was terrified she'd never get too again.
“It's okay, it's working now." Katniss hugged him before they worked to get him standing up again. She was so soft, so caring, which you knew from the act with Rue the year before, but it was so moving to see in real life. All the things that really made her such a good symbol of the rebellion, not the hate for the Capitol, the love for other people.
𓈒⠀𓂃⠀⠀˖⠀𓇬⠀˖⠀⠀𓂃⠀𓈒
By day 3 it was pouring down freezing rain, buckets of it. Only a few more cannons had gone off and you couldn't reason how this would make the games more interesting, watching people die of pneumonia or something of the like. You'd figured out the boots were made to be pretty resistant to water and prevent as much sliding in the mud as possible, but it was basically up to your ankles in muck. Trudging along was a chore within itself, you couldn't even start a fire to keep warm, even if you'd strung up the tarp to keep it from the rain the wood around was all soaked. Every once in a while the four of you would string a tarp in the bare trees, one on the ground, huddle together for some sort of heat, lay the small plastic covers on you and pass the match between your hands as quickly as you could. Before they could burn out and you were terrified you'd run out, that all sense of heat would be gone.
You'd been so cold and exhausted that it took everything in you not to groan as the four of you picked berries. Grateful that Conway had paid enough attention at that station to know which one's were poisonous. Your hands were so numb it was nearly impossible to grab them, nevermind the fact that you were being soaked in the frozen droplets since it was Marlowe and Birch's turn with the plastic covers.
“Your lips are blue." You were startled when Conway was suddenly in front of you, staring at you with concern. You tried to move your hand to touch your lips but it refused to do what you wanted. Then you mumbled something so incoherent you couldn't even tell what you'd been trying to say. His hand pressed to your face, which you only knew from being able to see it. “She's like ice." He looked at the other two anxiously.
“Me too." Birch muttered and Marlowe shot him a glare before approaching you. Fingers touching your neck, searching for a pulse.
“We should set up the tarps, get her out of the rain.” Marlowe advised, looking at the two boys. "I think she's hypothermic.” Everything was a rush to you, it was so confusing. Why were you out in the woods? Conway was here, but who were these other people? It was hard to walk when Conway had led you into the makeshift shelter. “Her jacket is soaked through, hopefully her shirt isn't as much, we should take it off."
“That'll make her more cold." You were pretty sure that was Conway's voice.
“Water makes it worse anyways." The female voice rang out in your ears. Before some other ringing sound came through, this time you were sure you weren't delusional when everyone else's heads looked around. Conway instantly stood up to search for whatever it was.
When he came back it wasn't him you were seeing, there was Finnick. Gorgeous, sunshine Finnick. Your lips tried to move to say something to him but it was too difficult. By the time you felt them move an inch he was gone and it was Conway once again.
“This is huge." He remarked, bringing in some sort of package. Were you ok the boat? None of your surroundings made sense.
“Must have incredible sponsors." Another male voice rang out, who was that?
“It's a blanket!" Your jacket was being torn from your stiff muscles as something surrounded you. Was wrapped around you and your head was laid down. “You're gonna be okay."
"There's a broth too.” The female voice said again, you were seeing Finnick again standing over you, wait no it was your father. Hovering over you as if you were your mother. You just wanted to rest, this was all so overwhelming. Whoever it was was urging you to open your mouth to put a spoonful of something inside. Which was extremely difficult but eventually you managed to, the swallowing was even harder, but it did fill your insides with a pleasant warmth. Everything was such a rush you didn't know when you'd slipped into sleep.
You knew eventually you'd woken up, feeling somewhat warmer, more conscious. You knew people's names at the very least. Conway had his arms wrapped around the blanket, providing even more heat. Marlowe was laying by your side, trying to exude more heat even though she cold herself and Birch was by her side.
“You're lucky to have a mentor who could get you something like that and the sponsors to support it, most people die of hypothermia in under an hour, at least back home." Marlowe said when you'd looked at her. She wasn't bitter or angry about it, at least not at you.
“Yeah." Your voice was so hoarse you almost didn't recognize it. “Thank you for not leaving me for dead. I wouldn't have blamed you, the probability of me dying and dragging the group down waiting for me was pretty high.”
Marlowe just shook her head, "No us four until the end, we'll talk about it more then.” She looked back at the top of the tarp, listening to the rain drops. " When you're done being on the brink of death you'll share the blanket though, right? It's freezing out here.”
You let yourself smile a little,"Yeah of course.”

What Is and Isn't a Fish: a List
A list of the animals I discussed in my fish essay, but for those who don't want to scroll through paragraphs of text to find out if an animal is or isn't a fish. Just CTRL+F your way through here!
I'll add onto here more animals whenever I get asked about them being fish. See my fish essay here!
Some notes before you proceed:
Yes, all tetrapods are fish! We are phylogenetically fish, as we are and our ancestors were lobe-finned fish! "Fish" in the phylogenetic sense is a paraphyletic group if you try to exclude tetrapods, so it is frankly impossible.
How come tetrapods aren't listed as fish then? Long answer, read my essay. Short answer, me and other fish accounts tend to operate on the morphological definition of fish, so does most of the world. Here I use the morphological definition of "fish".

✰⋆⁺warnings: alastor(!) ace alastor and reader(!) cussing(!) its hell man idk what to tell u(!) very cultural (!) reader has a strong accent(!) reader is more modern than alastor(!) black reader NOT CAJUN SHE IS NEW ORLEANIAN (!) mentions of gore and blood(!) fem reader(!) angst(!) grieving (!) fluff(!) comfort(!)
✰⋆⁺Im so sad that the only new orleans part of alastor we got to see was a few of his music preferences, and the overused dish jambalaya (as good as it is, its referenced too much when mentioning Louisiana and i sorta hate it-) soooo, as an artist i took matters into my own hands 😈 btw, this is long, so enjoy a piece of my culture!!!
fun fact: did you know that Louisiana has about 400 festivals and events annually? (my favs are strawberry fest, mardi gras, and crawfish fest) btw if anyone is struggling to read it: mardi gras is pronounced madi-grahs. (like ice spice grah 🤪🤪/jj)
✰⋆⁺ Oh what a joy!! Your love Alastor is in hell with you!!! After a whopping 58 years after Alastor's death at 33, with you dying barely at 88 before your birthday, you've finally have found your soulmate!! You're a bit different though, you have a stronger accent, and your tone is..."slangy". Times have changed, but has your love? Of course it does! Alastor couldn't love you more, lovers being apart for too long is straining to one's mental afterall.
"His sister's black, but she is sho'nuff pretty. Her skirt is short, but Lord her legs are sturdy. To walk to school, she's got to get up early. Her clothes are old, but never are they dirty. Living just enough, just enough for the city." You sang, walking along the streets of hell. That song by Stevie Wonder had always brought you comfort...
It gives you a sense of memory, deja vu if you will. Not that you could remember. But you being a young black girl, in the struggles of 1916 brings a comfort to your heart.
...
You closed all eight of your eyes, your afro bouncing as you walked. Walking walking walking. Your dark dress would lift up slightly from the ground, wisping away curiously.
It was pitch black, like your gloves that ran from the tips of your fingers, to the upper part of your arm. If you squint, one could see hints of clear web being shown by light.
People would question why you still wore black even years after your husband's death. Now in hell, you had black skin, and spider appendages on your stomach and hips. How ironic.
You still never answered the question.
Alastor had died at the young age of 33, leaving a 30 year old widow to mourn his passing. That man chiseled his way into your heart and croaked years later. All you could do to keep your emotions in check, was continue your dear husbands work.
The radio station he worked at had begged you to host his morning shows. The town was distraught of his absence. And there's a depression? People were sad, now even more broke, and at the hands of phoney mayors and presidents.
Alastor left a big hole in the role he had as the "Darling of New Orleans". And so did the Bayou Butcher...
What else could you do? Each life you blew off was in honor of your amazing husband. Soon radio was bigger than ever! You'd broadcast the annual 8 killings of casualty due to the new 'Wynoriffic Widow.' This had led on for about 20 years before old age came into play.
You killed 162 people in the name of your love. Never caught, yet never forgotten. You became a big shot, killer and announcer.
While you never had the intrusive thought to do so, you finally understood why Alastor felt a rush of righteousness when he came home after his activities with Mimzy.
Damn Mimzy, the hooch she is. (💀💀)
Let's be honest, the name "Widow" hit too close to home due to recent events, but thats why you only killed eight people per year! And to make things even better, you set 8 things that would happen. 8 games. 8 lines all connecting into a web. And to make things worse for the police, your extermination cravings were sporadic, and not so scheduled.
But it all played out the same.
Something subtle. like a box of rotting spiders at the victim's doorstep.
Next would be a missing, or perhaps "disappearing" passport and driver's license...if they could even afford one.
Now there would be 3 warning letters, the classic "i know what you did". Simple as that.
The second one would be more detailed. Writings of the person's actions would be made for a week before the last and final warning was made.
"Im coming" you wrote in squirrel blood, giggling everytime the person panicked, not knowing it was you all along.
Then nothing....for 2 weeks or so. To lower suspicion per say.
Then its the time to strike. Waiting until exactly midnight to knock out and drag your victim to the very same swamps your beloved died in. You'd take the damned soul, and torture them for as long as you pleased. No matter how many screams, how much blood, their life was in your hands and yours only.
Finally, you'd pray. Pray that this offering of love would suffice for being ripped apart for so long. and as for cleaning up your mess, you'd thank the gators and the wolves for "aiding" with your hobby.
But you began getting old, despite exercising regularly and eating the things your body needed. You couldn't go out and fufill your duties. The one thing that made you happy, second to Alastor. And soon enough you died, welcoming your new fate.
The only thing you questioned was your young appearance. You died of old age, so you didn't understand why you looked like you were 30 again.
You hummed, mimicking a trumpet as you continued your short strides. And here you are now! On the way to reunite with your love once more... it's been far too long.
Welp, it won't be long before you see your life again (despite being dead). Adjusting the big puffs and coils on your head, as well as smoothing down your dress, you knocked onto the hotel door.
Your smile was so big! (You cheeks were starting to hurt from subconsciously doing so much, trying to keep memory of something you once lost).
You looked around yourself as you waited. There was a golden fountain of a majestic dragon creature, with building itself huge yet comfortable. Despite the lights in the front being a bit bright, this place pleased something in your mind.
The door opened for you to see...a short blond man?
"Hello? Is this the Hazbin Hotel?"You asked, restraining and chaining the accent you had, not wanting to be perceived as "ghetto" for the first time.
"Why yes~ Welcome my dear, and what brings you to this place?" The half-pint of a man reached for your arm, kissing it three times before hooking your arm. Your face involuntarily scrunched a bit before coming back to that neutral smile you has once before.
"I would like to see the hotel manager. Alastor, correct?" You asked as the man who tried to pull you forward, even though his head barely surpassed your chest. And surprisingly, for his height i mean, he pulled you along easily.
The lobby was a plethora of shades in red accented with bits of gold, black, and white.
"ugh His office is near the top of the hotel or something Can't miss it. The place sorta looks like a swamp."
"Of course" you mumbled. Thinking about the greenery and fireflies Alastor would take you to see.
"What was that?"
"Oh nothin'!" You smiled, already make your way to the prolonged destination.
Thank god there was an elevator, or you would've screamed. If this place was lavish and beautifully decorated, yet no easy place of transportation for inclusivity, or simply to better convenience of the people living here...
Thought pisses you off.
Hearing the elevator dig, you adjusted yourself again before walking out and looking towards the hallways. Ah, you could see what he meant. While every other door looked like a basic hotel door, the one at the end of the hallway was covered in green glowing floorboards.
It made you tear up, knowing he still had some kind of connection to his home. The fireflies danced around the entrance, enticing you to walk quicker in those heels of yours.
Reaching the door made your body paralyze and vision blur for a second or two. You took a deep breath, and knocked 2 times with a pause, knocking 3 times slower.
It was something you and Alastor did to ensure that the police wasn't at the door, back when you weren't interested in killing.
You hear shuffling, then came a fall and a thump. You hear a woman exclaim in worry. With rushed footsteps came an open door, revealing the one you lost so long ago.
He looked much different, much more red ('to hide the blood' you giggled to yourself'). His skin was more gray than that toned brown, you look up to his head to see...
'is this mf wearing a bob?'
"Alastor! Are you alright?" A doll-like woman came out, in a red suit but the brightest aura.
"Love...?" He ignored her, his knees trembling slightly with his eyes watering.
Next thing you knew you were tackled to the wall, embraced with such longing, infatuation, and a whole new level of care.
"Hello sweetheart..." You combed through his hair, brushing over some antlers, making Alastor shiver in your hold. You smiled, embracing him back with a somber sigh.
"Soooo- The Dappa Demon gotta milf for his troubles?" A white and fluffy man in pink stroller over.
"Um Angel- I dont think now's the time for that-" The Doll woman tried.
"And who is you?" You asked, genuinely curious. Alastor was still hugging you, silent, which is disturbing for a man with a voice like his.
"Da name's Angel Dust sweetpie!" He smirked, looking you up and down. "Why you cuddlin' up to Raspberry Daddy(™) like that?"
"Well, Angel, this raspberry daddy is my husband!" You explained, watching the lanky spider (which you now noticed looked like a spider), blanch before guffawing.
The woman, who you keep on forgetting about, gasped with, which you really hoped wasn't, all of her chest and possibly lungs.
"ALASTOR HAS A WIFE!!! WOW! ITS SUPER NICE TO MEET YOU!!!" She bounced up and down, her blond hair flew up along with it. Speaking of, the short man has blond hair too... welp, aint non of yo business so- "MY NAME IS CHARLIE!! THIS IS THE HAZBIN HOTEL!! AND- AND-"
"Charlie, suga mallow, pause pause! Its nice to meet you too baby!!" You started, "Can we just talk about this, as well as the hotel, in a better setting?- I think doeball needs a moment"
You looked down at Alastor, seeing his ears pinned downwards as well as feeling a small damp puddle on your shoulder.
"Oh! um- okay!! That's completely fine!! Yea! Go do your husband, and uh, wife things!!" Charlie said, pushing you towards Alastor's office once more, prompting you to hold your husband bridal style. You would hate for him to have fallen.
"So we aren't gonna talk about how Alastor isn't an edgy inhuman prince of darkness, gifted to the immunity of normal mortal affection?" Angel asked, still in shock.
The door promptly shut. You looked around his office, which was more of a radio station with shelves and a desk. Everything was in tones of brown, red, and burgundy.
The only thing that set it apart was the glowing green floor, with pale green tree moss around the corners. You smiled as a group of fireflies flew past you two.
You walk towards the chair, sitting down with Alastor's body in your lap, head in your shoulders, like long ago.
You move your hands to his ear, running your fingers through his fur, as well as using your bottom row of arms to turn on the radio, sitting so silently on the desk.
Luckily, for the both of you, calming slow jazz was playing.
"You ready to talk now?" You whispered quietly. His ear twitched before he sat up.
"Yes dear..." He said, his voice barely carrying through the air.
"Well... I wanna start with- where'd you go-?...that night i mean."
The room went silent. You continued to rub his back, feeling his boney spine despite the layers of clothing he dubbed.
Soon words flowed out of him. Like a radio host.
The story he told was one of improv, one he hadn't expected to share for a long time. About his killings, the dogs, his last sight. How his last wish was to kiss you one the lips once more.
And once he finished you told yours.
How much grief you were in. The sudden bloodlust you took after you figured everything out. The way you played with the town's mind. How every body you took was in sacrifice for him. The hope that your love would one day be connected once more, never severed again by dimensions.
The night was filled with silent sobs of two deceased lovers.
In the brief morning, you two caught up with each other. Alastor still liked a lot of the same things he did in the past, but you have changed a lot.
You have an accent. Sometimes you'll replace the word 'are' with 'is' and other times you say 'ain't', or nickname drop people. And when you get angry the accent gets even stronger, humoring him to your irritated dismay.
You can cook now! Before Alastor died, he would cook for the both of you. You managed to burn an expensive pan he got from his mother, he never let you lay a hand on the stove ever again.
You also were more...modern. Luckily not to the point where you were addicted, but it still pissed off Alastor that you had some form of flat screen. You listened to rap occasionally, as well as musicals.
But yet, he couldn't judge you for these new qualities you have. You still have that lovey fro, your beautiful and plump lips, and the way your eyes flow across the room almost brings his rotting heart back to life.
Right now in the kitchen, you two were making beignets in coconut oil. As you rolled the dough out, Alastor questioned your uniqueness of cooking.
"Darling, must you stuff the pastries with dark chocolate? Wouldn't the powdered sugar be enough?"
"Don't worry Baby! m'Made these several times!" You replied. You grabbed the strainer, tossing the raw dough into the hot oil.
"And why coconut oil specifically?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. You rolled your eyes with a loving smile.
"Cuz! It makes it taste better! Not sure how to 'xplain it, but it just does." You flipped the beignets, ensuring they were golden brown before placing them on the brown paper.
"If you say so, my Dear."
You began to hum softly, to a jazz song you heard on the streets, swaying slowly as you worked. Your husband then held you from behind, swinging with you.
His head was buried in you neck, ears flicking with each tickle of your hair. His arms came underneath yours, holding and pressing your hips.
Plating the food, you set it down in favor of dancing with your love. Dancing to the silent song of adoration, fondness, and care.
Behind the kitchen door, which was slightly propped open, you could hear the excited ramblings of the hotel's owner, making Alastor groan quietly.
"WOW!! They're so cute!!! Omg, they are so sweet together!! EEEEK!!" Charlie exclaimed, struggling to keep her voice down. this made you chuckle sweetly, making the woman utter an apology before leaving.
This is all that you wished for. Your husband, loving and dancing with your soul again. Even if it took a couple of bluenoses to accept it. (cough cough Angel and Husk)
All you could think about were those bands, the trumpets, the parades, Alastor, the food and feel of your homeplace. All of it brang you back, and now you have even more to appreciate.
Dreams do come true, down in N'awleans. Even if it takes years to achieve it.

For the confession dialogue prompts can you do 11 and 20 with Jake?
11. "don't make me say it. i can't say the words." & 20. "it hurts me, just how much i ache for you."
Tumblr media
"Would you still love me if I was a worm?" Jake looked up from the book in his hand, glancing at you with a raised eyebrow.
"Would I also be a worm in this hypothetical?" he asked.
"Mmm, no, just me. You'd have to be my caretaker, build me a terrarium and all that." you watched Jake consider her answer.
"Yeah, I'd probably still love you if you were a worm." he shrugged. "I'd miss human you a lot though."
"I would miss being human too, I think." you nodded, going back to your e-reader. One of the few thing you and Jake disagreed upon was your use of the e-reader. He preferred the physical book in his hand, while you would use the electronic copy, and purchase the physical book later if you liked it enough. But if he aggravated you enough about it, you were always quick to point out the horribly wrecked and dog-eared pages of his books.
"What prompted this question?" Jake asked, glancing over at you again.
"I don't know, just saw it online and was curious." you shrugged. You didn't notice Jake dog-earring his page, and setting the novel down on the arm of the couch, you only noticed him plucking your reader out of your hands and tossing it behind him onto the cushion before latching himself to you.
"Jake!" you giggled, as he rolled you from the couch onto the living room floor. He continued to roll the both of you until you were on top of him, your hair cascading around his face. He looked drowsily up at you, his smile making your heart flutter.
"I would love you if you were a worm, a duck, a crawfish...even if you were an ant." Jake told you, his hands on your thighs.
"Really?" you laughed. Jake sighed, his face softening, but becoming more serious.
"Don't make me say it, I can't say the words." he muttered softly.
"What words, Jakey?" you hummed, leaning down and pressing kisses along his jaw line, making him groan underneath you as you giggled. "What can't you say?"
"How much I love you," Jake hummed, pushing your hair back and out of your face.
"You just did, you dingus." you chuckled at his offended face, and he rolled you both over so you were the one on your back now.
"Dingus?" Jake gasped, sitting up as he straddled your hips, hands over his heart, clutching it like you fatally wounded him. "That hurts, I profess my love for you, and you call me a dingus?" Strands of hair had fallen from his small bun, and framed his grinning face.
"I called you it out of love, you know." Jake leaned down, kissing your cheek before giving it a soft nibble. Suddenly, he straightened up again, clutching onto his body and groaning, falling over to the side. You couldn't help but laugh at his dramatics, watching as he reached out for you.
"Yes Jake, what's wrong baby?" you cooed, coming over to him as he pretended to gasp, a small smirk tugging at his lips as you cupped his face and coddled him.
"It hurts," he rasped out.
"What baby, what hurts?" you urged him along.
"Just...how much I ache for you, my love," he sighed, before closing his eyes and played dead.
"Oh noooo, Jake!" you held back your laugh as he lolled his tongue out of his mouth, his head turned to the side. "Oh no, whatever will I do to bring you back?"
"Fla sure this" you furrowed your brow, leaning closer to hear exactly what Jake was murmuring under his breath.
"Hmm? What was that?"
"Flash your tits," his voice was high-pitched, making you giggle.
"Oh I don't know, the last time I flashed my tits to a dead guy, he turned out to be a real stiff." you muttered, and Jake fought a laugh, his chest bouncing giving him away. "I have heard a kiss can wake the dead, though, maybe I'll try that." you giggled again as you turned Jake's face towards you, watching him lick his lips in preparation for your lips. Leaning down, you grazed your lips against his, seeing his fingers twitching on the hand on his tummy. Before you knew it, that hand was lifted and in your hair, deepening the kiss.
When you pulled back, Jake blinked his eyes open, gasping in another dramatic fashion.
"Oh my god, I thought I was a goner!" he sat up, grabbing your face and kissing your cheeks. "Thank you for saving my life, baby!"
"Of course, my love." you giggled.
"How about I take you upstairs, and as a reward for saving my life, I'll reenact whatever was in your book that made your thighs clench earlier." Jake smirked at you.
"How do you-"
"I watch you sometimes. You make the best faces when you read."
"Shut up!" you gently swatted his arm as he tugged you up, scooping you in his arms and carrying you towards the stairs.
"So, are you gonna tell me or do I have to pick up that damn device?"
"Well, there's this tattooed mafia boss who's dark and twisted but secretly has a heart of gold..."
"Say no more." Jake winked at you, kicking the bedroom door shut with a thud.

Sineala Stony Podfic List
One of my minor beefs with AO3 is that’s there’s no good way to search for works inspired by a specific author. So if, for instance, you want to find all the podfic readings of fics written by a favorite author (@sineala) for a favorite ship (stevetony) you’ve got to do some digging.
Or rather, I had to do some digging and now you can sit back and enjoy the fruits of my labor. There’s 33 podfics on this list, so plenty to choose from!
All-Time Low read by AudioSilks (@whenas-in-silks) (Length: 1.5-2 Hours, Explicit)
Summary: Tony's lost his company to Obadiah Stane. He's lost it all: his money, his friends, his Avengers team... and his sobriety. Drunk, homeless, Tony is living on the streets, and when he runs out of liquor money, he sells the only thing he has left: his body. And one day, he has the exact wrong customer.
Backhand read by Cathalinareads (@cathalinaheart) (Length: 10-20 Minutes, Explicit)
Summary: Tony always knows what Steve needs, even before Steve does. But just because Steve needs something doesn't mean he likes needing it -- especially when what he needs is to hit Tony.
All the rest are below the cut!
Breaking Point (The Abort, Retry, Fail Remix) read by watery_weasel (Length: 20-30 Minutes, Mature)
Summary: Here's a fact about Captain America that the entire world knows now: the last thing he did was commit murder.
Convention Exclusive read by cookiemom6067 (@cookiemom6067) (Length: 10-20 Minutes, General Audiences)
Summary: "I'm interested in commissioning a sketch," Iron Man said. He leaned forward, edging into Steve's personal space, splaying his gauntleted hands on the table. "I'd like you to draw me wearing only a tiny thong, with Captain America staring at my nearly-naked body in horror." (Or: Steve Rogers, former artist for the Captain America comics, is signing autographs at a comics convention when he meets his biggest fan. Not an AU.)
Do It Over read by miss_marina95 (@missmarina95) (Length: 20-30 Minutes, Teen And Up Audiences)
Summary: The last words your soulmate says to you are written on your skin, and you won't know who they are until they die. The thing is, Steve and Tony die a lot.
Follow in Your Footsteps read by paraka (@paraka) (Length: 45-60 Minutes, Teen And Up Audiences)
Summary: When Tony is twelve, his soulmate's name appears on his wrist. Unfortunately, it's hard to find out anything at all about Steve Rogers. It turns out there's a reason for that.
Get Some Now read by where_thewind_blows (@flowersthroughthecracks) (Length: 1-1.5 Hours, Teen And Up Audiences)
Summary: Avengers Mansion has a mysterious feline infestation. Meanwhile, Steve just can't figure out how to ask Tony out on a date. And the thirteen teleporting cats sure aren't helping matters any.
Heart Covered in Smoke read by GoLBPodfics (@godoflaundrybaskets) (Length: 10-20 Minutes, Teen And Up Audiences)
Summary: And now Tony's standing here, at the end of the world, and Steve's coming to kill him. Honestly, he can't think of a better way to go.
Hidden Facets read by cookiemom6067 (@cookiemom6067) (Length: 20-30 Minutes, Mature)
Summary: The weirdest consequence of Tony's unexpected telepathy is not the fact that he now knows Steve has secret gay fantasies. It's not even the fact that Tony has a starring role in them. That's absolutely fine. Better than fine, even. But what Tony can't figure out is why all of Steve's secret gay fantasies about him are so goddamn sad.
How to Date a Robot read by crawfishing (Length: 5-6 Hours, Mature)
Summary: How do you date a robot? Even the twenty-first century doesn't have the answers to every question. Steve will have to figure this one out for himself -- after he politely rebuffs Mr. Stark's interest, of course. Sure, Mr. Stark is handsome, but Steve would rather be with his bodyguard. So when Iron Man agrees to go on a date with Steve, Steve couldn't be happier. He loves Iron Man with all of his heart, and their relationship rapidly grows serious. But why does Mr. Stark hate Iron Man so much? And why in the world is Mr. Stark trying to tear Steve and Iron Man apart?
Job Satisfaction read by The_Casual_Sounds (@the-casual-cheesecake) (Length: 20-30 Minutes, Explicit)

Like a Comet Streaming On read by RsCreighton (@rosecreighton) (Length: 3.5-4 Hours, Explicit)
Summary: Tony escapes Afghanistan with a functioning Iron Man suit and a perfectly normal heart. He even manages to bring Ho Yinsen home safely at his side. But he may as well have lost everything... because his wolfbrother is dead. Six months later, the Avengers find Captain America, frozen in ice, miraculously alive. Everything and everyone Steve has ever known is gone -- except his wolfsister, the recipient of the lupine version of the super-soldier serum, who was frozen in his arms. Tony has everything but his wolf. Steve has only his wolf. This is how their lives fit together.
Love Across the Multiverse read by Cathalinareads (@cathalinaheart) (Length: 1.5-2 Hours, Explicit)

Never Too Late For Love read by Cathalinareads (@cathalinaheart) (Length: 10-15 Hours, Explicit)
Summary: Steve has always believed that a soulbond is a blessing -- a rare and beautiful miracle, joining the thoughts and feelings of two people forever, from the first time they touch. Steve knows he's not going to be one of the lucky ones. He knows Gail isn't his soulmate. But he loves her, even if they're not soulmates, and he's going to do right by her. After the war's over, he's going to marry her, and they're going to settle down. They'll buy a house. They'll have children. He'll see his family again. Maybe Bucky will live next door. It's going to be a good life. He doesn't need a soulbond. He'll be fine without one. Then Steve wakes up sixty years in the future to find that his wonderful life has moved on without him. His family is long dead. His fiancée married his best friend. And the only purpose he has left is leading the Ultimates, a misbegotten team of superheroes with flaws too numerous to count. Summary: Steve hasn't seen Tony since he was rescuing him, drunk, from a burning building. But Tony's sober now, he's at Steve's door, and he wants to make amends. Though maybe "want" isn't exactly the right word for it.
Nothing Pure Enough read by grrreed_pods (Length: 10-20 Minutes, Mature)
Summary: You shouldn't be able to develop a Hanahaki fixation on someone you've never met who's been dead for decades. But Tony has always been special.
The Opposite of a Problem read by exmanhater (Length: 10-20 Minutes, Teen And Up Audiences)
Summary: "I promise to love, honor, and probably not obey you, and, uh, take you as my totally-unlawfully-wedded husband, in sickness and in health, forsaking all others, until death do us part, or for at least the next seventy-two hours." Slipping off the Page into your Hands read by RsCreighton (@rosecreighton) (Length: 7-10 Hours, Explicit)
Summary: Soulmates have their first words to each other written on their wrists. This should make it easy. For Steve and Tony, it is anything but. Steve's problem is that the future he has awoken into is nothing he was ever expecting: he has a soulmate now. Who might be a robot. And if his soulmate is Iron Man, how can he be so attracted to Tony Stark? It should be impossible. Tony's problem is that he is Iron Man, his soulmate is a man whom he in no way deserves, and he is going to fight everything in his heart and do his best to make sure Steve never, ever finds out the whole truth.
So Far Away From Me read by cookiemom6067 (@cookiemom6067) (Length: 20-30 Minutes, Teen And Up Audiences)

Note
I already know the right answer bc im also from Louisiana but real question is seafood gumbo or chicken and sausage gumbo
“Personally, seafood is the best,” Bo answers. “Love making it.”
Vincent snaps his head. ‘No. Chicken and sausage!’
Bo looks offended. “Seafood!”
Vincent stands. ‘Chick and sausage!’
As they argue back and forth, Lester boils a pot of crawfish. “It’s a house divided, friend.”

Snippet - Forward, but Never Forget/XOXO - A Fine Line
Tumblr media
Vi slowly wins over Caitlyn's parents...
Forward, but Never Forget/XOXO
Snippet:
The kitchen is a modest sunlit geometry. Vi gets started on breakfast. Caitlyn handles the tea-brewing and the clean-up. After moving in together, they've developed a system. Vi has taught Caitlyn how to hang her towels, do the dishes, fold the laundry. Caitlyn has taught Vi how to pick wines, deposit a check and write 'Thank-You' cards. The slow ramp-up of domesticity is sweetened by a shared sense of novelty.
It’s a freedom neither of them has enjoyed before.
Cracking two eggs one-handed against the bowl, Vi begins whisking. Into the silky saffron froth, she sprinkles a pinch of sea salt and a dash of cayenne. Poverty and pickles go hand-in-hand—that's the saying belowground. Yet Piltover is the real loser when it comes to zesty cuisine. All the premium produce in the world doesn't compensate for their lack of spice.
Since moving in together, Vi has shown Caitlyn a dozen ways eggs can be served. There is no wrong way to cook one, so long as it's flavorful. Ditto for stews, soups, sandwiches.  Her sump-vole fritters—a barbarism to most Topsiders—have won the highest praise. Since then, Caitlyn has sampled all the dishes in Vi's repertoire: a charcuterie board of pickles, rice and onion pilaf, crawfish stuffed with cheap macaroni.
Last week, she'd invited her parents on a tentative dinner. Their first together in a month.
Councilor Kiramman had stared at her plate with polite revulsion. But as the wine flowed and Mister Kiramman proffered genial compliments on every dish, the matriarch began to thaw.  Midway, she'd tasted a forkful of Vi's sump-vole fritter. A startled smile had softened her severe face. In that moment, the resemblance to Caitlyn was uncanny.
"Where did you learn this dish, child?"
"Down-low, Councilor," Vi replied, smiling.
"Is it always so spicy?"
Vi cocked her head. "There's a fine line between good flavor and a hole in your gut. You gotta walk it."
Caitlyn had stifled a snort. Mister Kiramman hid a smile behind his handkerchief. The Councilor was less amused. But the food had woven its magic, and by the time dessert was served—a tart berry crumble, the only dish Vi could make without setting off smoke detectors—she'd unbent so far as to ask Vi directly for the recipe, instead of addressing Vi obliquely through her husband.
Vi had given her the recipe: a personal gift.
Afterward, Caitlyn grinned with unabashed pride, Vi's hands clasped in hers. "I think she's warming to you."
"Like mother, like daughter, huh?"
Caitlyn's kiss was all the answer Vi needed.

there's a loneliness in midwest gothic. not from the style itself, but from the assumption that everyone who lives like this must be lonely. empty.
i grew up in a one-room schoolhouse turned into a home. it was called barrens when it was built; the ground was so clay-rich even our apple trees didn't survive after a single winter. even after a hundred years, someone still tried and found the same result as those who named the land. still, day lilies sprung up by the concrete foundation of what used to be the coal storage.
my parents probably knew the name of every single family that lived on that gravel road. i probably tried to sell candles to everyone that was home. a little kid riding a bike with a catalogue crumpled between fingers and handlebars, knocking until someone would give in and answer the door. the prizes for those school fundraisers weren't even worth it, but winning them was.
i went for walks with anyone who would go with me until i was old enough to go by myself. down the road, not towards the highway but towards the creek, there was a house only a few years from falling in on itself. my older sister went with me, past the "no trespassing" sign and into a grove with dead vines, spanish moss, and pink and blue african violets that were the prettiest flowers i had ever seen. sometimes i wonder if those pictures still exist on an old phone somwhere...
there was a time before that house was torn down, the man who owned it was there. he and my dad stood around talking about whatever was new while my mom and i sifted through a falling-down shed on that property that the man just wanted to get rid of. you couldn't see the floor of that shed, it was covered in sea of glass jars, many of them broken. my mom picked through the pieces and handed me unbroken jars so i wouldn't hurt my hands. in my house now there are still old old mason jars, blue and clear, scattered about and finding different purposes. that house's foundation still sits there, but the shed is long gone. i wonder if it was his parents' land, once upon a time.
there's a cattle farm not too terribly far from where i live now that has two old houses on it. one of them is for rent, runs on filtered well water but i wouldn't drink it if you asked me. the man who owns it grew up in that house, and it really hasn't changed that much from the 70's. he offers extra crawfish sometimes. and the other cute little house house right next to the one for rent is small, so small i can't imagine what it was for. hunter lodging, maybe. but it doesn't matter much anymore, it's not in good enough shape anyway. there's a hole in the east side, the siding is peeled back, and you can hear the buzzing of a honey bee hive from far away. no one lodges there anymore, but it's still a home. there's still life. there's still life.

How does the team react to Graves’ Gumbo? Do they ask questions about his southern culture?
Stole this format from my wife @lanaartsiebby (love you!)
~~~~
Soap: Apparently a lot of traditional Scottish foods are coated in black pepper, so man was unaffected by the spiciness. He really liked it, even if he refused to tell Graves that. Has questions but won't ask them. Bonus: he seems like the type of person to be really thrown off by crawfish until he eats one
Ghost: Remembers his time in Texas. It wasn't the fondest of times, but he did like the food. Probably doesn't ask questions because he knows enough in his opinion.
Rodolfo: The man can respect a good cook. Definitely talks with him about the differences in food. Graves mentions the different Mexican influences in southern culture and food and Rudy liked that.
Alejandro: Refuses to eat it. Is betrayed when Rodolfo and Valeria does. Will just ask Alex.
Price: Nearly kills him the first time. Learns to like it. His spicy tolerance has increased a lot while dating Graves.
Gaz: Coughed when he breathed it in and had to sit down for a minute. Likes it but was definitely thrown off. Has a few questions.
Graves: Disappointed it doesn't taste like his mom's. Wishes he could ask her for her recipe. Answers any questions as openly as he can because he's really interested in theirs and is hoping for a culture exchange
Valeria: Likes southern food. Doesn't ask questions because she doesn't care. Doesn't need to forgive Graves as she isn't mad at him but she takes the food regardless. Bonus: She has never felt fear about food in her life. Has eaten a chocolate covered scorpion (they're mildly spicy! I love them!)
Farah: Was excited to try it. Really liked it. Asked a couple of questions about the culture and Graves was happy to ask her questions back.
Alex: My boy is from TEXAS I do not take CRITICISM and he is used to this food. Answers some questions with Graves so they can compare the differences. Almost come to blows over the pronunciation of kolache and proper cooking of beignets
Laswell: I'm thinking of co-opting her for Southern people as well. Gives me Georgia vibes so gumbo isn't something she'd be terribly familiar with. Likes it. Stays out of the fist fight until she hears one of them bash peanut brittle. Wins.
Roach: Mildly afraid because he is a British person. Ended up liking it but it was very spicy to him. Graves and him have a language barrier but they're working on it. He writes down a bunch of questions Bonus: Would complain about the crawfish making eye contact with him.
i thought i used to hate wings. like, the food. they're messy and hard to eat and they hit on so many little autistic pain points that i have with food. i used to dread getting them with my family, and as an adult i never went out of my way to get them.
but i finally let myself try them again tonight... and it turns out they're pretty good! but that's because i got to try them on my terms.
i got boneless wings.
"now sky!" you might say. "those aren't really wings. they're basically chicken nuggets."
Yeah, I Know. i heard that every time we got wings as a family – and that's exactly why i never got to try them. i always got the regular wings instead... and i hated it!
i've always struggled with eating meat with bones in it. when i have to pick at my food in order to eat it, my stomach begins to shut off and say that i'm not actually hungry... so i only get through half of it before i can't eat any more. plus the fact that they're already messy means that all that picking makes my hands greasy and i don't like how it feels when my hands are a mess and—
"why don't you just Eat Them," my dad would say. how do i answer that? i am trying to eat them. it is not good for my autism. (i did not have the words for this as a child.)
this isn't even the only food i have this struggle with – i live in the south where crawfish boils are a crowd pleaser, and as much as i love the taste, i can't eat enough of them before my body shuts off. it takes me too long to peel each one to reach the meat on the inside!
so why didn't i just get boneless wings, if i have this problem with so many foods? i still don't fully know. but the echoes i hear from my memories tell me that it's because they're "just chicken nuggets," and if we're gonna get wings, we should get wings.
so the one thing that would've helped my autism was simply shamed out of my life.
...to my dad's credit, he did use that mindset to get me to try a lot of things that were outside my comfort zone as a kid. him telling me "you don't go to a chinese restaurant to get chicken nuggets" is one of my formative memories, and choosing the cashew chicken that day is a big part of why i love chinese food as an adult!
but i didn't choose to go to that chinese restaurant. and i didn't choose to get wings back then either. i might have handled it a lot better if i had chosen it on my own terms. and what better proof do i have than tonight, when i finally chose to try boneless wings, despite the shame it was associated with?
i could have shared their joy for wings as a kid if i had simply had that chance... but at least i can enjoy them now.
Soft Boy Hours
(WTTT New York One Shot)
New York was actually feeling in a decent mood. Everything was going well enough for him and people were leaving him alone. But then he noticed... No interruptions from Florida. No raging from Texas. No loudness from Massachusetts. No neurotic behavior from California or Gov... What was going on? He had to get to the bottom of it. First stop was Massachusetts' room, since it was the closest to his.
New York gently knocked on Mass' door, to which it already slowly swung open. Mass answered with an angry sigh when New York asked him "What's up?" He didn't like the sound of that.
"Nothin'... Except my sucky roads as of late. More construction & traffic accidents have been happening. Also, Gov won't get off my case about gathering votes for— Wait, why do you care all of a sudden?" Mass asked in a genuinely shocked & confused manner.
"I just noticed that yous guys haven't been a thorn in my side as of late. I wanna know what's going on with you & the others before it gets too quiet" New York responded.
New York listened to Mass ramble on about his issues for a little while. Then, after about 5 minutes or so, Mass' demeanor changed. He seemed a lot more welcoming and pleasant overall. He even shook New York's hand politely, thanking him for just being around to listen to his problems. As he didn't want solutions, he could figure those out for himself later on. Up next? Gov.
Gov was frantically sorting through papers as per usual. He seemed very out of it as New York just walked into his room. Louisiana was already there, looking for some sort of discussion with Gov. New York went behind Gov's chair & shut the man's laptop. He looked at a rather confused Gov with a stern expression. Gov asked him what was going on, to which New York crossed his arms. He asked Gov when the last time he ate was... Gov shrugged his shoulders a bit, remaining silent. New York took the man, by his wrist, to the kitchen
New York sat Gov down and asked him what he wanted to eat. Gov politely asked for some steak and potatoes, knowing New York could cook really well. New York jumped at the opportunity, cooking and listening to Gov ramble on about work related issues. Once he finished up, New York plated up the food & gave Gov some water to go with it. Gov thanked New York as he dug into his steak. Now? Florida.
Florida and Louisiana had a fight, that much was clear. Because when New York walked in, he could immediately sense the tension. New York thought of a solution for him: Making Loui some crawfish and a nice daiquiri as a peace offering. The two of them spent some time together, making this "tall order" for Louisiana. Once they finished, Florida immediately hugged New York.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Florida said excitedly.
"You're welcome, Pal. Lemme know how it goes" New York responded, hugging Florida in return.
Texas. New York didn't really care for the guy, but he still wanted to hear from him. He went into Texas' room, looking around. Texas was on his bed, staring up at the ceiling. He demanded to know why New York was here. New York was fairly transparent, saying he wanted to make others feel as good as he did right now. Texas smiled softly. "Mighty noble of ya" he replied, as New York sat next to him on the bed. Texas just rambled on as well, stating that him and Oklahoma had a fight. Oklahoma vocalized some anger against Texas that was pent up & ready to burst. As a result, Texas just stepped away.
New York suggested that he just take time to really think about all that was said between the two & figure out how to best "shake hands and make up". "I know you don't wanna do that, but sometimes we just gotta be the bigger man" New York said, looking Texas in the eyes. Texas nodded, thanking New York for helping him.
Last but not least, California. New York immediately knew what to do. He tapped California on his shoulder, asking if he could have a hug. New York was bombarded by a tight hug by California. The two hugged for quite some time, as New York played with California's hair. After a while of listening to each other, California thanked New York for paying attention to him. "You're the best"
After a long while of walking around, New York saw some gifts from the other states. They all thanked New York for his time & went back to their own business.
