🕷️Meet Joe Arguelles, a comparative biology Ph.D. student in the Museum’s Richard Gilder Graduate School. His research focuses on understanding the molecular drivers of the incredible mechanical properties of spider silks.
🕸️He also studies the evolution of “prey capture systems” (silk, venom, and vision) in active hunting spiders, and how these genes have changed in response to the loss of web-spinning behavior.

The touch-me-not (Mimosa pudica) folds its leaves in when touched or exposed to really any mechanical stimulus: heat, electricity, etc. It shows a simple form of learning where repeatedly being exposed to a stimulus that doesn’t hurt will cause it to stop reacting, which lasts for at least 28 days. Plants raised in low light, because they have less energy and a greater need to reduce unnecessary movement, learn faster.

welcome to emo moss’s menagerie of animal facts !
commencing today because i’ve finally stopped putting this shit off
today’s animal is the FLAT HEADED CAT (Prionailurus planiceps)
the flat headed cat is a small wild cat with reddish-brown fur. they prey mostly on aquatic animals and are extremely elusive, sometimes dubbed “the most unknown cat in the world.” these guys were first recorded in 1827 and despite efforts since then, they are remarkably elusive and hard to find. they are critically endangered, with <2,500 estimated to be left in the wild. they are normally nocturnal, but captive specimens have been known to be crepuscular. they are known for their wide, close-set eyes, small ears, short legs, and (obviously) flat head.

flat headed cats are very unique because of the nominal flattened shape of their heads. it’s unclear why their heads are shaped that way!
their eyes are very large and set very very close together, giving them the appearance of some sort of extraterrestrial cat thingy. it’s likely because they are nocturnal. these things can look you straight in the eyes if they wish (but they probably won’t, because they’re very shy)
they share a characteristic with cheetahs and fishing cats ! their claws are not fully retractable and they have about 2/3rds of their claws protruding at all times.
these guys are ITTY BITTY TINY. they have a head and body length of about 13-20 inches (41-50 cm) and a very short tail of 5-6 inches (13 to 15 cm)!
their diets are mostly aquatic and they have been known to wash their food in water like raccoons!
both males and females scent mark by raising their leg and spraying urine in their territories.
captive adults were observed groping and pawing along the bottom of a pool with their front paws spread, again very similar to raccoons !
their vocalizations, although we do not know much about them, have been reported to be similar to that of a domestic cat’s. kittens meow similarly and adults have been recorded exhibited purring noises that sound remarkably similar to a domestic cat’s!
after they catch their prey, which is aquatic, they usually take them at least 2 meters away from the body of water so that the prey cannot escape again.
another consistent weird body feature: from what has been recorded, their teeth are unusually long for a feline!

Today’s Exhibit of the Day? The Museum’s giant amethyst geode. Standing 9 ft (2.7 m) tall and weighing around 11,000 lbs (5,000 kg), it’s one of the largest specimens in our halls. How did this dazzling geode come to be? About 135 million years ago, the continental plates carrying South America and Africa began to separate. Magma poured out from fractures in Earth’s crust and large gas bubbles escaped from within the magma—becoming trapped in the rock as it solidified, forming cavities. Groundwater flowing into these spaces brought dissolved silica, which crystallized into quartz. Over millennia, most of these quartz crystals turned into rich purple amethyst. Spot this and other amazing specimens in the Museum’s Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals!

i have unaveragely good knowledge of conditions that affect pigment in animals, and i dont really know why
so fun facts with gold (take with grain of salt):
we all know about the albino condition, but what about lutino? the lutino mutation affects birds that can have a yellow color. it is genetically identical to albinism, but instead of making the bird white, it makes them yellow. Together they are known as the Ino mutation. Other animals can have this too but it most commonly occurs in birds, and the term lutino mainly refers to birds. Other animals are called xanthochromistic.
There is also leucism. In leucistic animals, the pigment cells rack up defects during their growth. Not all pigment cells are affected, meaning that leucistic animals can still have color and often retain color in parts of their skin and eyes. This is where piebalds come from!
Melanistic animals are completely black. They produce an excess of melanin, darkening their features drastically. This is the condition black panthers have.
One bird takes it further: the Ayam Cemani chicken breed. They have hyperpigmentation, which makes their bones and internal organs black as well. pretty metal little birdies
Abundism and pseudomelanism can make an animal appear completely melanistic, but they are not. They will usually have some lighter patches, which melanistic animals do not have.
Melanism and associated conditions are usually much less dangerous for the animal than albinism. Albinism basically means some animals get fuckin cooked real quick by the sun. Gators and crocs with albinism, for example, don’t last very long outside captivity. 24 hours tops.
Also fun bird color fact: The darker a bird feather is, the more resistant to damage it is. This means that albino birds get raggedy feathers much quicker. You might see a lot of birds with black feather tips specifically because that keeps them from getting damaged as easily. You may find that a lot of worn seagull feathers still have the black tips intact, or at least more intact than the rest of the feather.
colors is cool

I’m reading a thread of interesting word etymologies, and here are my favorites:
The etymology of "tawdry" is a real ride. There was a 7th century Anglo-Saxon saint named Æthelthryth. Now, nobody, not even 7th century Anglo-Saxons, wants to go around trying to pronounce that dense forest of th's, so she was commonly known as St. Etheldreda, and later, linguistically lazier people called her St. Audrey. St. Audrey was the patron saint of a town called Ely, and the folks of Ely held a fair every year in her name. One of the primary products on offer at these fairs was lace. "St. Audrey's lace" was said a few too many times, and got slurred down to "tawdry lace." Over time, the lace fell out of favor. It was mainly made by peasant women, and thus viewed as cheap, and the Puritans looked down on lace garments of any kind as ostentatious. "Tawdry" then began to be used to describe other things that were cheap and ostentatious, and the modern definition of the word was born. tl;dr: "Tawdry" comes from the fact that Æthelthryth is really hard to pronounce.
...
The word "quintessential" has one of my favorite etymologies. You can break it down into "quint" and "essential." Quint as in "five." "Essential" as in "essence," or "element." To be quintessential is to be the fifth element of something. To be the thing's *spirit*.
...
Etymology of the word clue: The word clue originates with the myth of Theseus, who used a ball of yarn to find his way back out of the minotaur's labyrinth. The middle English word for a ball of yarn was clew (or clewe); when the myth was popularized in England by Chaucer, people started using the word clew figuratively to mean a hint or guide to solving a problem.
...
The phrase "hands down" comes from horseracing and refers to a jockey who is so far ahead that he can afford drop his hands and loosen the reins (usually kept tight to encourage a horse to run) and still easily win.
