i can’t stop thinking about this weird little storm chaser AU my brain dreamed up where bill&ted are the POV characters but crucially not the main characters but the problem is that I truly don’t know anything about storms and I worry I’m not smart enough to understand if I do start researching LOL

#N posts stuff #like i have a vague fascination with storms but in largely esoteric/magical thinking ways VS scientific #but for some reason the idea is really sticking: full AU no Unite the World plot points #but they started off bc Liz and Jo wanted to photograph / video some storms as an art project thing #and bill and ted tag along to drive the van for them; and then instead of being a one off they just. keep doing it #and along the way somewhere they pick up Station — just two nonverbal dudes here — who are in it for the Science of it #and then background characters include Rufus and Kellye who man a radio station that focuses on reporting weather or whatever #and they pass along info to each other and they’re friends (weve also been very fixated on Radio lately)#and maybe the crux of the Main Meat of the fic is that Billie and Thea are also big on storm science and are finally old enough to start #tagging along on chases instead of being sequestered out in a shelter with either bill or ted (the other drives solo)#and there’s like. tension about it of the ‘it’s dangerous you’re supposed to do as i Say not as i Do’ variety #conflicting with how much the parents understand about how important it is to the girls #bill and ted being the POV means Technically i don’t necessarily have to Understand a lot bc they probably wouldn’t either #but to have all the other characters engage in coherent conversation we need to have a solid grasp of all the technical shit lol #and unfortunately i’m not the kind of writer who is willing to spin a yarn and make stuff up about it #but i also haven’t really Successfully studied any hard sciences since. uh. high school; most of what i read is nonfiction but it’s also all #like. ‘softer’ sciences — sexuality and disability and on and on ; storms and especially storm Chasing is a lot more technical i think

attempt at a meta or rather more incoherent gushing about these two

I love the contrast of the above scene, how Vash is joyous, all-smiling. While Meryl is wrecked, in tears. Most often, it seems that’s how they also remember each other.

Meryl likes to remember Vash happy and at peace. Vash remembers Meryl while she’s solemn and also a bit vulnerable. In a way, they inspire emotion in each other that’s hard for them to express. Vash has had a lot of sadness in his life, but while he will always wear a smile, I think he finds it harder to let himself be genuinely happy than to cry. Meanwhile, Meryl hates to cry. She hates to let down her guard and appear as if she can’t take care of herself, but with Vash, she really can’t help herself.

I ship WildeHopps (another goofy tall character hiding sadness with a smirk and a straight-laced, determined shorty. even their eyecolors are the same!) and I remember that there was a thing in the fandom about foxes that they can’t help but shout when they see their mate, and I don’t know how accurate the translations are, but even when they reunite again, Vash can’t help but shout out ‘Meryl!’ in happiness (seriously despite how surprised he was, he could’t help his smile. and he only called out meryl despite milly also being there, like rude, vash, if milly wasn’t such a sweetheart and loved you both to bits, but anyway, I digress…)

I really loved the fistbump (*cough indirect kiss cough*) scene so much because in asmuch as it was Vash comforting Meryl, it was also about him taking comfort in Meryl, which when we remember from his waterworks when Marlon called him out on it, he previously found really hard to do.

On Meryl’s side, we actually see that she has the same values as Vash. I love the Little Arcadia chapter/episode so much for this reason. Grandpa’s speech to Meryl about following your own path and your connection to your parents, resonated with her, but we as the readers also know that it’s something that would have also resonated with Vash. She wanted to resolve the conflict without anyone losing their life, and at first couldn’t understand why something like land would be more important than life. But push comes to shove, when she sees the resolve of someone to protect something, she puts her life on the line anyway. We even see traces of it in the anime with how she also shoots non-lethal shots, and that one time when she saved Vash, she shot the light to fall on the person instead of shooting the person. That sort of pacifism is present in her and Milly although they may not be as obvious about it as Vash, which is why despite himself, Vash finds himself growing closer to the girls and considering them as among his most important people despite the fact that he knew them only recently compared to the people from Home and Marlon. Even Milly’s principles regarding family bonds would also be something that would resonate with Vash, and it’s important that he was there in the shadows because I think that was the turning point in how he started to consider them his friends. So in a lot of ways, despite Meryl not wanting him to, I think Vash truly sees the vulnerability that she tries to hide. And I find it so believable and endearing that he would be drawn to her because of that similarity and connection between them.

they both inspire hope in each other

When I say that Vash inspires Meryl to be selfless, it’s in the way she will risk everything just so she can be there for Vash, to overcome fear and her own human limitations, just so she can hold him close. Vash (and through his connections with others like Luida) inspires in Meryl hope for a better world. At the same time, I always got the feeling that the type of love that Meryl felt was something she would be content to keep on giving to this person who always kept on giving to others, even when there was a chance that she would never get it back or have it returned. I imagine that she would have been fine with that as long as Vash felt that he was unconditionally loved.

When I say, Meryl makes Vash feel selfish, it is within the context that selfish for Vash is already a normal level or base desire of wanting to be happy in other people. I remember Legato’s observation of Vash, that he considered himself as having utterly no value in this world. Of course a person like that would be fine with dying!

But this person who considers himself worthless, eventually makes a promise like this.

Vash must know that there’s a high likelihood he’ll die. Someone as self-sacrificial as him wouldn’t want anyone, much less a person he cares deeply for, to be hurt by him. And yet he makes this ‘selfish’ request of Meryl anyways. And it matters so, so much that he does. Because it shows that he can consider himself as someone who can make another person happy. It’s a promise to her, as well as to himself, that he won’t let himself simply die. He wouldn’t anyway because of how much he values Rem, but with this promise, it feels like his wanting to live is finally something he wants to do for himself, and not just as a continuation of Rem’s memory. Like with the fistbump scene, this promise was as much for him as for Meryl. I know he still would have fought to live and to protect humans, but at the same time, in the wake of Wolfwood’s death, I also felt that he would have been at peace should he have died trying. So this promise was to tether himself (to her). It’s something to keep him fighting to live now that he knows there’s someone out there waiting for him, by his own actions at that. More than that or simply put, it’s just a simple thing of allowing himself to want something or someone.

And this is how Meryl inspires hope in him. All this time he’s loved humans, but it always felt like he was living beside them and not with them. He doesn’t know what it is with Meryl, maybe her sheer stubbornness, but somehow she ends up representing that hope, that possibility of finally living together with humans (with her). In contrast to Meryl’s hope, it’s a very simple and humane one. To have someone care for him, to have someone wait for him, to have someone to come home to, to have someone who loves him. And it’s funny that it seems that Meryl expects nothing in return for her overwhelming love for Vash, because Vash actually meets her halfway. He’s the one to initiate the kiss. He’s the one to make the promise and have her promise. Finally, he’s taking the chance of his happiness into his own hands and doing something about it. I just, I really can’t with them. No wonder I ended up being vashmeryl trash.

skip to loafer chapter 56 analyze + brief shima study // spoilers

summer vacation is over, which means we’re all coming back to tokyo. for some, it’s time to bask in the memories they created, however for others, the harsh reality comes creeping in again.

one thing that i absolutely love about takamatsu’s way of constructing a chapter is how she easily mixes the youth of the characters (the girls talking about crushes) with the obscure subplot she has been creating up to now (shima’s backstory). the change between subjects isn’t harsh or out of place: everything happens in a simple flow, ending in a calm scene to tie it all together.

so, let’s start from the youth: it’s amazing to see how mitsumi was the step that the other three girls needed to finally be free enough to be a teenage girl, something they prevented themselves from being before. she’s the one who manages to ease their worries and let them be free to talk about things teenage girls should be talking about — and they decided to choose one of the cutest subjects ever: crushes!! makoto being the one to bring this subject up just shows how she grew and how much she trusts the girls, since she was always apprehensive to touch on certain subjects. and this talk was the perfect opportunity for mitsumi to get a little more courage to talk about her relationship with shima with the girls, and choosing to do that in tokyo shows how much she cares about shima, since she doesn’t want the girls to think badly about him at any point.

ok, now let’s jump to the subplot, the one that i love to analyze so much. well, we all know that i had a gut feeling that shima didn’t say anything about the trip to his mother — first because we saw nao-chan talking to all the parents, minus shima’s, and second because, by the little we know about shima’s mom, it’s easy to say that she would never allow shima to go there empty handed. so i can’t say that i was surprised by the outcome of the confrontation.

i think first i have to focus a lot on shima's reaction towards his mother. the scene opens with shima entering his room and noticing that things were not the way that he left before the trip, showing from the beginning a breach of trust. even if his mother had the best of intentions (like, for example, keeping her son's room tidy), it is difficult for shima to understand this act as something affectionate and not as a way of showing that she doesn't trust him.

after that, we have the big showdown. there is no way to defend shima in anyway with the way he acted and what he did. he traveled miles from his mother, without her having any idea about it. this is extremely dangerous, any parent would be desperate to receive news like this after days. i don't blame her, on the contrary: i think she’s more than correct in confronting him about this.

but for shima, this concern doesn't come from a loving side, from a worried mother. shima still sees his mother as that manipulative and controlling person he grew up with and had so many conflicts with, so hearing all of this only a desperate need to get out of this situation as fast as possible. she already broke her son's trust as soon as he entered the house, so it's very easy for him to assume that this is another one of her controlling attitudes.

but there is an interesting point in all this. after the fight, shima begins to reflect on her mother's changes and asks a very important question: am i still mad at her or am i just being stubborn, like a child who expects something in return?

this shows a maturity in his character, as it is the first time he stops to analyze what all this means inside his chest. would it be rebellion? love? distrust? a cry for help?

shima's relationship with his mother is still something that requires a lot of growth and development for it to make a significant change. in my opinion, it won't happen now or in 5 chapters, but much later, something like an ending to shima's arc, a way to embrace all of his growth. it’s as if she represents the beginning and end of his journey.

aside from his mother, now we have two new pieces to this puzzle: the unknown man and a very new image of shima (the image of him walking with other boys, on the panel where he thinks about his feelings towards his mother). what we have left is to have an idea of how many pieces we still need to assemble the final image. what happened? who was responsible? is this the man who ruined it all? or he was just another victim of the circumstances?

(something that is not related to these questions but that made me think was the fact that ririka sent him the photo. could this be a form of provocation or just a way of finding comfort?).

crabs are no longer shima's only concern at the moment. his harsh and difficult reality came back to the surface with full force. and i, who thought we were close to the climax of his arc, am shocked to realize that we are nowhere near halfway there.

to finish: mitsumi's speech about how tokyo is finally being a new home for her. this is something that makes me so happy, that brings me so much peace, especially with nao-chan's happy and relaxed face next to her. tokyo is finally mitsumi's second home, and she's happy to be able to return to it.

another month and another amazing chapter, another reason to be so excited for what's to come. this is takamatsu-sensei's power. thank you for reading me rambling and for all the nice messages you guys have been sending me 💛 it means the world!!

My Trans-Lesbian-Awakening Characters lol

Haruka Tenoh (Sailor Moon)

I believe Haruka was my first introduction to a lesbian and gender nonconforming (gnc) character! Discovering she was a girl along with Usagi and Minako blew my mind. The idea of a masc presenting girl was a revelation and I also found the fact other girls were attracted to her to be enviable, even when I watched the English version where her queerness was erased.

Trixie Tang (The Fairly Odd Parents)

The episode "The Boy Who Would Be Queen" was cathartic for young me. Although the episode was about overcoming gender stereotypes, Trixie's story felt relatable from a trans perspective. Her male persona outside of school and her interests in doing "boy stuff" but feeling pressured to maintain a feminine image for social acceptance resonated with me deeply. It's a shame we never got to see this side of Trixie outside the one episode.

Kaoru Matsubara (Powerpuff Girls Z)

I remember her introduction was her dodging a flock of fan girls on her skateboard. I was immediately pleased that the anime version of my favourite Powerpuff girl was that of a womanizing gender-bending skater girl lol. I felt annoyed along with her that she was forced to wear a skirt in her magical girl form.

Yui Goido (The World God Only Knows)

Even with her out-of-nowhere appearance in the second season, I was immediately enthralled by her princely demeanor and the way she casually blurred gender roles. I had to read her arc in the manga that was tragically skipped over and it screamed trans. Yui's conflict was her being forced to be traditionally feminine. Her body swapping and getting to live as a boy seemed to have given her gender euphoria that when she returned to her body, she started wearing the boys' school uniform, changed her hair to make it more androgynous, and started using "boku" to refer to herself (which is a masculine pronoun). Her personality also becomes a lot more confident, it's like watching a trans masc person finally be able to be themselves! The show may not appeal to me now but Yui was a big comfort character.

Mettaton (Undertale)

Mettaton's unique and subtle trans story felt so palpable to me that it made me resonate strongly with his character. When I learnt about his backstory, I felt genuine sympathy for him and his cousins. I love his charisma and how much queer energy he exudes!

Pearl (Steven Universe)

Pearl will always be a deeply important character to me for how much she contributed to my queer actualization. I think it's because I grew up with her as the cartoon series ran throughout my entire teenhood that she has been the most pivotal character for me. Getting to see this character who epitomized lesbianism and growth felt integral to my understanding of the queer community and myself.

i think everyone focused so much about eleven character development that no one is talking about el season 1 anymore 🙁 I'm rewatching this season now, and there's so many things that needs to be spoken up and no one does it and i don't understand why. it's very important bc when we take a look at eleven now, her behavior, her feelings and worries, it's all connected to the little eleven from season 1. I have a couple things that i have noticed from basically two first episodes.

NUMBER 1: eleven is afraid of loud noises, i bet that it was really quiet in the lab, she was locked up alone (I'm talking about lab from season 1 not 4 to be clear) practically the only person she talked too is brenner, she was a scared kid and probably was scared of every noise bc she thought that papa is coming to her. Then we can see in season one how she reacts to every noise, she was afraid of the storm, she was nervous when Lucas and Mike were yelling at each other, we can see that she's scared and quiet all the time bc it's her first time at this world- we can't say that living in the lab was actually living 💀 she wasn't even treated as a human being but as an experiment. Everything is new for her, she's fascinating about everything, there are so many things she wants to see, try, learn but she's also scared of everything and then- we can see how she reacts to loud noises even when she's grown up, for example season 4- el is getting bullied in rinko mania, we can see how she's covering her ears bc the music is too loud-(also funny thing i have noticed, the first thing that Mike does when he finds out what's going on is yelling at Angela's friend to turn down the music, why? bc he knows eleven, and he knows that loud noises are hard for her so that's the first thing he does)

NUMBER 2: how useless eleven felt in s4 without her powers, remember s1? when she failed the experiment Brenner got mad and locked her up for a punishment, we can see that when eleven didn't have enough power to do something she was treated like an useless thing, so now, when she lost her powers she felt that she lost the only thing that makes her special, she was really insecure about herself, she thought that no one will love her without her powers bc for what? that's why I can't understand people who are defending brenner 💀like bffr.

NUMBER 3: her love language, she puts attention to words, why? bc all her life everyone lied to her, tricked her, "pretend" that they care using words but never actions, that's why she was focused on Mike's words and not actions, and here we have a problem bc mike is focused on actions and not words bc his parents probably use words but how their children can know that they are honest if there's no proof of actions? exactly. Mike cares about actions and expresses himself with actions, that's why the conflict between mileven was ever made. They have a different love language and they both didn't know what to do with that, so now, eleven though that mike doesn't love her bc he doesn't use words, and mike thinks eleven doesn't need him bc she doesn't use actions but words.

Also i would like to mention the fact that this poor girl didn't even know what privacy is. She wanted to get dressed in front of the boys and saw nothing wrong with that. The fact how bad she was treated in the lab needs to be spoken more

(btw i tried to put pictures in order to make it more clear but idk if it works 😭😭 it's kinda about mike tbh but let's focus about eleven here that's supposed to be about my beautiful girl this time)

Ghost Helpline part 3. Diana was shocked, hurt and elated all at once! “Your grandmother is Pandora?! I did not know that she even had a child! I am ecstatic to meet you Konstelacio. Oh my I call you cousin?” This was it! as far apart as the separation between Pandora and Themyscia may be Diana would take any family she could. The loneliness of childhood gnawed at her.

“Oh no! I’m not Pandoras Grandchild!” The girl crossed and uncrossed her arms into an X to show her dismissal, “She is a good mentor! And a wonderful family confidant! If anything she’s like my Nanny.”

Constantine began to sweat buckets.

Diana shouted, “Wait…is Pandora…” lips thinned.

“A ghost ? Yes”

- Tim stared at Konstelacio, she had begun to breathe deeply, averting her eyes from Wonder Woman, feet shuffling together. She was exhibiting shame. And Tim understood the feeling well, that you were too unworthy to even be held in comparison to someone else. Someone whose shoes you could never even dream of filling. “Do Demons have grandmas?” Uhhh speedsters.

“Yes”

“That’s so cool! Who’s yours?”

“I don’t know.”

Oh oh those golden eyes looked tired. As tired as Jason’s eyes had been after his first gala, Dick thought. They may have both been adopted but Jason was treated to so much contempt being from the streets, so much fake pity. /Oh poor kid doesn’t even know who his mom is./Dick knew Jason hated it all.

“I’m sorry!”

“It’s okay. It doesn’t matter.”

/It doesn’t matter Dick! Just drop it!/ the eldest robin frowned.

Damian tsked, “What about your parents? I would suppose even monsters need those? Also landing community service instead of some harsher punishment must mean you have some connection to authority in your ‘realm’ no?”

The little girl grinned, “Yes something like that.”

She has nearly everyone in the room duped, Constantine side eyed the Bats nearly. He knew that smile; a tad too wide eyes, a fraction to tight smile, the inexplicable about of understanding and kindness up until this point… this was the grin of a con artist.

- “I know quite a lot of important people! Why Pandora herself is my nanny! And my supervisor is my uncle.”

“Tsh- is that not a conflict of interest?”

“Doesn’t matter,” John wished he was allowed to smoke in space, “No more wasting time, now that we know you can help us what’s your price?”

“Hhhuuu what? Oh the price for the antidote will have to come later, after all you technically aren’t getting it from me. I’ll have to ask nanna and whoever else decides to help what the want. It’s only fair.”

“We see,” Batman’s low tone sounded. “And the dragon-“

Her hand stuck out shyly, “Tips are always welcomed tho…after all I am still providing a service.”

“We don’t …”

“It takes me a lot of energy and time to help you mortals so much. I’m so tired already.”

Batman’s mouth stilled, “We-“

A blur of red, “Oh are you hungry? Do you need anything? Let me get you a chair, snacks..”

“No no chair! Nothing is going threw that circle !” Constantine yelled, “Do you have any idea what could happen!”

“She’s a child!”

“She’s a demon!”

“Constantine is right.”

“Bats you can’t be serious, just look at her?”

“I know I know I just wanted one from you cuz you were nice to me.”

“That’s still doesn’t explain why you would ask for a favor as a tip?” Diana looked as the girl flushed in embarrassment. “I -I -I just want one to show my friends that’s all just to prove that I could get one that’s all! Uummmm cousin???” She hesitated regretful as soon as the word had come out.

“Oh I see are your friends giving you a hard time? Well I say the only one that would be appropriate to give you such a thing would be Robin… the youngest that is.”

The bats looked back at Damian oh dear lord sweat god don’t -

“Tch- here.”

Oh

Damian tossed a handkerchief towards the circle. “You just carry a handkerchief with you?” “Of course I do I’m not a heathen unlike you Drake.”

The toss was barely thrown in her direction when it disappeared entirely. “Where…”

“No worries I just put it in my inventory. Now then I’ll be on my way.”

“Wait!”

“Huh?” Big doe eyes blinked up at them all in confusion.

“The dragon! What about that thi- guy.” Hal scruffed out.

The girl brightened up, “Oh you don’t have to pay me anything for that! After all Aragon the one that broke his patrol. So I’m sure as soon as I send my report someone will come deal with it eventually.”

“Eventually?!” Hal’s hand hit the table, who was this kid?

“Well yes, tons of reports go in everyday! It is the INFINITE realms after all! Who knows when they’ll get to yours.” She shrugged as if it was all just a matter of convenience as if that very dragon haven’t terrorized and destroyed lives throwing its tantrum.

Superman chewed his lip, as this meeting contributed to drag on he had no doubt Aragon would continue to destroy everything in its path. “Wait what about your connection, surely you know someone that can help ? What about your supervisor uncle ?” Clark needed this to stop, he couldn’t even land a punch on this guy. Nothing worked and he was already weak to magic. This has to stop.

“Well I suppose I can but it’ll cost you.”

“Wait just a minute!”

“Do we even have anything you want?” Clark raked his mind over ideas in his head, for a tip all she had wanted was a handkerchief an old school way of showing off to her friends like any normal girl. “We don’t have much but I’m sure we could think of something???”

“It’s okay Mr. Superman.” Konstelacio lite up “I’ll just take something you mortals don’t really think about hhhmmm something small.”

Hal sighed as he leaned back, “You sure we can’t just give her a dog?”

“Ugh fuck this mate I need a light,” forget not being allowed to smoke up here all these idiot we’re getting on John’s last nerve, “Ugh drat! I could have sworn I had my lighter in my pocket.”

“Oh you mortals losing things in your own pocket. Oh that’s what I want in return!”

“A lighter? Smoking is -“

“I want your pockets.”

“What do you mean?”

The devil grinned, “Your pockets, empty them.”

I Read Azula in the Spirit Temple

And here are my thoughts:

Azula and Ty Lee's interactions are the best part of this comic. I generally don't like Tyzula but see why it exists. Azula's most compelling actions are with her female friends. And this comic builds a compelling foundation for Tyzula because Ty Lee is actually in a position of power here, as the one who understands What is Going On whereas Azula is still in denial about everything. There's a reason here that she appears in the temple but appears to be the only thing that's real. They have a nice Batman/Catwoman dynamic here.

I was right when I said Azula was using the Fire Warriors, and here she tries to use the fact that she broke them out of the institution to keep them loyal to her, but the point, that we see over and over again in Azula's story, is that you can't win loyalty and love through fear. The other girls have become fed up with Azula and leave her, and by the end of the comic, Azula also realizes that it was her own actions that drove them away, which is why I think she decides not to pursue them. The shot at the end of her watching them together is sad because we know Azula really does want friendship and love, but she still can't let herself admit this. Instead she declares that she will find her own followers again, because "I always do." I'm actually quite fond of this ending. Azula gonna Azula.

On that note, one of the central themes of this comic is Azula's awareness that she is responsible for driving the people closest to her away. The gist of this comic is that Azula essentially finds herself in a lotus eater's dream, but rejects it because she knows it's not real. Azula's main conflict is her desire for recognition and love from the people she cares about warring with not just her feelings of her own self importance, but her desire for the truth. Even when the spirit gives her what she wants, she doesn't accept it because she knows it's a lie. This actually is a really good insight into Azula's character because we know Azula before the series finale was content with the lie, she was able to convince herself that fear is the only way. But now she's getting to the point where she can't do that anymore, even at the expense of her own happiness.

Azula repeating in her sleep how she will make the fire warriors pay like a madness mantra is hilarious, and the comic intentionally plays up her pathetic self-delusions of grandeur in a way that is reminiscent of Zuko yelling at peasants to step aside in the show while he himself is reduced to a beggar.

The spirit does seem to want to help her, but since what it shows is controlled by Azula's own mind, it can't settle peacefully, because Azula can't find peace within her own mind. Everything the spirit shows her is really a reflection of her own inner conflict.

There's an interesting bit where Azula calls the spirit out and says something like "do you really think what I want is lies and manipulations?" The ironic thing is that Azula has built relationships on lies and manipulations in the past. Ty Lee at one point says that they were never friends, and that she was happiest without Azula.

At one point, Azula blames Mai for "breaking up the team for a stupid boy who didn't even want her" Zutara supremacy!

Azula wants the people she cares about to acknowledge how they hurt her and seek forgiveness, but she can't make the connection that she needs to acknowledge how she hurt others and seek forgiveness. Azula convinces herself that people can't live without her because she's afraid to be alone.

I've talked a lot already about Azula's visions of her family and the memory of the first time her parents see her firebend. I don't have much else to add here that wasn't said before.

There's a particularly interesting part where Azula destroys the spirit's monstrous vision of Zuko (who tells her that she needs to seek forgiveness from the people she's hurt) and the vision of her mother responds with a horrified "Azula, what did you do?" as Azula is standing over the spirit vision of her brother, dead from her lightning. Azula quickly dismisses this as the illusion that it is, but it's an interesting image and calls to mind how Azula did strike her brother with lightning and nearly killed him. Since we know that the things the spirit shows Azula are from her own subconscious, could this be an echo of Azula feeling guilty for how she's hurt Zuko?

Azula says that everyone turned against her except her father, and he's now "a pathetic shadow" without his bending. This is interesting because it's the first time Azula has acknowledged any fault with her father. This comic is also the first time she acknowledges that her father made her into a weapon. She says that she's the only one left to carry on her family's legacy. She's clearly conflicted about these two thoughts and even when she gets close to acknowledging that her father was abusive, she then turns it around and blames her mother and everyone else for "abandoning" her, and won't acknowledge that Ozai lost his bending as a result of his own actions, and instead sees herself as the only one left of any worth.

Azula's mother keeps telling her that she loves her, and since we know that what the spirit shows Azula comes from her own mind, we know Azula knows this deep down. Even in the moments when she admits that her mother was not happy, she knows her mother was scared for her and that she did care about her.

Overall, Azula is compelling in this comic because she's a villain who doesn't know what she wants, and is very close to having that "I'm the bad guy," moment, but still resisting change. And I kind of love it, to be honest.

I may post some more coherent thoughts later, but I just wanted to get this down for now!

okay, potentially stupid suggestion people much smarter than me already made

shouldn't the thing people as outsiders do about the palestine/israel conflict be to just. make their communities more welcoming to jewish people?

like, as far as i understand, the big thing about israel is that it's supposed to be safe for jews to live there. as in, they can be jews and not have to worry about schools and workplaces not accomodating their religious observances or the law just straight up making parts of being jewish illegal or being victims of antisemitic hate crimes, all of which seem very fair and reasonable concerns pretty much everywhere else in the world, and which seem to grow increasingly more important with the rise of antisemitic bullshit currently happening

but more jewish people moving to israel because they are made to feel unsafe and unwelcome everywhere else in the world is just going to add more tension to the situation? and is going to give more power to the bastards in power going 'see, we're the only ones who actually care about jewish lives, you have to support us or risk being killed in a hate crime or forcibly assimilated'? which seems to be the absolute opposite of what we actually want to happen?

like, jewish people are people just like everyone else. and just like everyone else, they'll want to keep living their lives, ideally in the places and communities they're used to. most people don't want to uproot their whole lives and move halfway across the world to a country where they don't speak the language and aren't familiar with the laws and customs and potentially have to re-do all their education and qualifications because their diplomas don't transfer, just for shits and giggles. they usually especially don't want to do that if they have siblings or children or parents who they might end up leaving behind

so if the goal is 'jewish people don't have any inherent right to israel and should not be there', well. don't give them a reason to go there? be polite and welcoming and accommodating and stop antisemitism when you encounter it, so that the jews around you, who are currently, in accordance with your goal, not in israel, will feel safe to stay where they are?

and if the goal is 'jewish people have all the same rights as everyone else, but they're weird and i don't want to be around them', that is absolutely your right, but the same is true for the horse girl in your class or the coworker who is far too invested in pro wrestling or the person at the gym who seems to subsist entirely on energy drinks and a questionable sleep schedule, and you're perfectly fine not needlessly antagonising any of those people, and defending their right to be as weird as they damn well please, and helping them if someone is actively trying to harm them, so just extend that same courtesy to jews? they probably feel the same way about you, and you can all just cheerfully avoid each other with zero effort expended on making anyone's life needlessly harder?

or maybe the goal is 'palestinians deserve better, and we should make the israeli armed forces not attack them', in which case. it's still in your interest to keep jewish people in your community to stay there? because compulsory military service is a thing in israel, and being a conscientious objector is invariably more difficult than simply being elsewhere and thus ineligible

regardless of how you, personally, feel about jews or israel or the israel/palestine conflict, or anything else connected to it, and regardless of what your ideal resolution looks like, and regardless of how little or how much you understand of the details, we can all agree that more jews migrating to israel will not improve the situation for anyone, so maybe. stop making jews feel unwelcome everywhere else in the world?

i'll defend javi and kate. my only Real problem with them is how they handle david in it like girl can you at least take off the wedding ring before we kiss 😭 my brother still thinks youre his wife (plus they did push it Really hard.. but like.. narratively i understand why they did. family is a running theme of the series and javi and davids relationship is like the main conflict). but like. kate and javis relationship Makes Sense. she had a shit husband (who wanted to go back to the army anyway). her and javi already had the beginnings of Something before the outbreak even happened. she was left with javi to take care of 2 children that werent even biologically hers (i enjoy the complex family dynamics in twdg as a whole). and together theyve been surviving for years as a family unit. i think javi having feelings isnt up for debate, its more just will he act on those feelings or will he respect his brother? and like.. fuck david am i right? kate was Not happy in that relationship and deserves better, and javi cares about her. but also the pressure from their dad to get along after hes gone. it all works for me even if it couldve been executed better

and i .... sigh .... Understand gabe and clem. BUT!!! i think they have different feelings towards each other and its an important distinction. gabe definitely has a huge crush on her, shes cool as hell, but i think her feelings in return are fueled by hormones and the fact that she hasnt been around anyone her own age since DUCK (sarah was 15 at the time). like. does she think hes cute? yeah. but he can also be kind of a huge jerk sometimes and acts recklessly. i think its those moments that snap clem out of it lol. seeing this response in S4 felt vindicating im taking it as sad loner clem having a hormone induced crush. like girl yes or no?? this is the most direct option??

personally i dont like them together because i Hate tropes where the more mature girl half has to teach the immature boy half to grow up and be capable and thats somehow romantic. 10 more of my possible unpopular TVDU opinions…

CW/TW: Racism mentioned, suicide as a topic in the shows.

I know nothing about the writers of these shows, but I assume that they have made some of the bad decisions degrading the shows! I don’t know ANYTHING about the production of anything, the opinions below are solely based on what I see on screen: THESE ARE MY OPINIONS AND YOU CAN HAVE DIFFERENT ONES AND THAT’S OKAY!

1.I hate the way Legacies changed the magic, or more like how the magic looks like. I loved the way how magic was kind of low-key in the TVD and TO but Legacies changed it to be a bit more childish. (Also, I heard that Legacies introduced Gods to the universe, and I cannot fathom how the lore got to that point.)

2. Like all of the people in the universe are horrible people and you still liking the more problematic characters are fine as long as you acknowledge that the characters are problematic. In this fandom you kind of need to pick whose problematic behavior you choose to ignore, and once again it’s fine as long as you realize that.

3. Season 7 of TVD had so much potential and at the start I really liked the first(-ish) half of the season. The heretics were really cool and I really liked their characters but the longer the season went on the less I liked it. (The heretic girls were really nice.)

4. It’s really weird how a lot of vampire media focuses on the fact that vampires can’t have biological children. In TVD there are multiple scenes that focus on the fact that Elena being a vampire fucks her life up because she can’t have biological children. I don’t know if this is the writers telling the viewer that they don’t see non-bio parents as real parents or the writers just trying to make poorly made conflicts or something.

5. It’s really weird, how the Mystic Falls gang is so against any of the villains killing anyone, but then are completely happy to kill like thousands of vampires just because they needed to do their own thing with the hunter’s mark and all. Like Jeremy killed so many people and they never had a moment of like “hey, us killing possibly thousands of innocent vampires because of Elena isn’t a good thing”.

6. I don’t hate Matt Donavan (at least not all the time). At first, he was an okayish character and his actions made sense because of what had happened to his loved ones and because he was a child. But I couldn’t stand him when he became a cop and started to be the number one supernatural hater.

7. Finn’s character is tragic but no one seems to see that. The man lost two of his siblings, got turned into a vampire against his will, got locked in a box for 900 years, was ready to die and died like twice (I think). And it seems like none of his siblings really cared for him, which is stupid when the siblings whole thing is the importance of family.

8. I’m sad that we barely see Marcel being a part of the Mikaelson family (Even in flashbacks.) I get that they had their own problems to deal with but still. I have two theories of why Marcel was treated as he was: 1. Racism 2. Writers not seeing non-biological families as real families. (It’s most likely a bit of both, in my opinion.)

9. I still don’t understand how at the end of season 8 everyone became humans again. (I have no interest in going back to watch how it happened.)

10. TW: Suicide!! I hate the fact that TVDU sees someone commiting suicide/letting themselves to be killed as okay because “they sacrificed themselves for someone else/the greater good”.

Leia Organa in Obi Wan Kenobi is the best thing

Okay I'm bringing this back because Leia in Kenobi has been reducted (by some fans) to “Leia and Anakin & Padme parallels” only.

When Leia in Obi Wan Kenobi has so much meaning, so much dept, so much importance than just being the rhyme of Anakin and Padme.

Her arc: Leia through all the episodes is just her taking her parents advices to the heart.

“There are many ways to lead, Leia, you just have to find yours” —Bail Organa

Then sh*t happens and Leia is dragged through this crussade with Obi Wan and she indeed finds many ways how she can become a leader and ends up adapting it into her own way of leadership.

“You get out what you put into it” —Breha Organa

In all this Leia, little by little, realize that she just needs will and effort to make a real change and help, everything else will come alone.

We can see such a beautiful arc in this 10 year old Leia Organa. She started as a little girl who doesn't know exactly what to do in general (not in a bad way, just normal doubt as anyone at any age could have), she seems a little bit conflicted about how to get to do things because she still pretty young and of course is understandable, but she ends up understanding her parents words, that she just needs to watch carefuly to what happens around and start taking steps.

Her arc in Kenobi keep beautifully proving that Leia is the best character in Star Wars.

Also this.

Her future: Bail and Breha's words being some kind of look into Leia's future and who she will become in a few years.

When Bail says “She's as important as he is” he's not overreacting, he's complete and absolubtly right, she became one of the most important members of the rebelion before and again after Bail and Breha's death, she striked the Empire down, she also mastered the force just like Luke, she was the one to bring the last (blood) Skywalker back to the light and who trained Rey and help her become the great jedi she became by the end of TROS.

When Bail tells her “you’ll probably be one of the best [senators]” again right, she became just as famous and respected senator like her father before her, she worked so hard alongside Mon Mothma to rebuild the Republic and she was one of the few to point the weakness and mistakes of it, the only one who really attacked the first order in the Senate.

When Breha says “I know who she's like” she's joking with Bail, telling him Leia is just like him, and she's quite right, because Leia is just the perfect mash up of them both, she really is just as much as Breha as she is just like Bail, she really took her leadership from both, being the one to found and fund the Resistence 30 years after the Rebelion and the Empire, being one of the strategic brains just like her father and leading with wisdom just like her mother.

Bonus: Obi Wan Kenobi saying Leia is the future of the galaxy, of the Rebelion, he was completly right

The deepening: the development of her relationship with Obi Wan is beautiful and it just adds so much depp not only to A New Hope but also to Leia naming her only son after him

First impression: oohhh she's kind of mean. i like that

Impression now: literally one of the greatest most lovable interesting protagonists of a kids' show of all time i love her so much it's unreal

Favorite moment: god that's so hard there are so many great moments to choose from. i guess my ultimate favorite moment is seeing her working at the aquarium. and yes i know that's like the last two minutes of the entire show, but it made me cry so hard ngl

Idea for a story: i'm really interested in how she and sasha grew apart in high school. i think they dated after marcy left, and by the time marcy came back to visit they had already broken up and didn't even tell her, and then sasha got a boyfriend in high school and that was really weird for anne, but she acted like everything was fine bc she didn't wanna seem biphobic lmfao. but they still hung out occasionally. so like, them navigating that kind of awkward dynamic as exes who used to be extremely codependent and are now trying not to be.

Unpopular opinion: i guess my unpopular opinion about anne is that her flaws are important to loving her character and they are what make her so lovable, so trying to erase them or victimize her is missing the point entirely. i guess all of my opinions about anne are unpopular since no one understands her, but still. mainly that.

Favorite relationship: i love all her relationships, but like. sashanne. come on. and her mom <3

Favorite headcanon: i have a lot but here are a few: she minored in film studies. serena williams was her first crush. as she gets older, at least a third of her wardrobe are things that used to belong to her dad.

SASHA

First impression: i guess this wasn't my first impression but pretty immediately i was like "wow her parents must be really terrible."

Impression now: white girl of all time <3

Favorite moment: all of her nervous breakdowns, especially in "barrel's warhammer." she was rly going thru it

Idea for a story: see above, also more about her home life, since we know relatively very little, but i have ideas...

Unpopular opinion: she never did anything truly wrong and even if she did all of her actions are excusable because she is a scared thirteen year old who has never had a positive role model in her life

Favorite relationship: anne duh. she is so obsessed w that girl.

Favorite headcanon: she gets a boyfriend in high school and anne can't stand his ass even tho he is literally so inoffensive and nice to her. she finally understands how sasha felt about sprig.

MARCY

First impression: i would've been such good friends w her as a kid

Impression now: truly my best friend my silly rabbit

Favorite moment: when she's like "of course i remember your names, spring, molly" she's so funny (that was a deliberate joke on her part to be clear. she absolutely knows their names)

Idea for a story: i feel like i kind of know everything about marcy i would like to know, since we do get insight into her adventures in newtopia from her journal. something i think could be nice is just a story about her first week of highschool, how she's afraid that she's not gonna make any friends, and immediately finds a group of likeminded nerds who share her interests and validate her way of thinking about the world. i actually think she'd be really popular in high school, at least among her friend group. not a very good story since there's no real conflict, but yknow. it would be nice

Unpopular opinion: marcy is a character who is best utilized in small doses. she is not the main character, nor should she be. i also wish people would acknowledge her arrogance more, since it's a great character trait but i feel like people don't wanna admit that she has flaws that aren't cute or palatable. even though it's what makes her character good. lol

Favorite relationship: anne!! their friendship reminds me so much of my best friendships from childhood. they're so sweet together :')

Favorite headcanon: her parents made her do so many after school activities. kumon, violin lessons, etc. she was good at them, but she hated it because she knew that anne and sasha were hanging out without her while she was stuck in a little room, practicing.

listen it's like day three of Witch From Mercury brain poisioning and i am still not over it so I'm gonna go over why I think this gundam series specifically is a big deal.

1. THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

obviously the most prominent feature of this series is the female protagonist, and the precisely-delivered normalisation of queerness in this gundam timeline. lots of people have already said lots of words about it, so we'll yadda yadda here.

2. WAR NEVER CHANGES

Gundam, as has been pointed out again and again, is a very politically-charged anime franchise. The original was a critique of imperialist japan dressed up as a critique of nazi germany, and pulled no punches when it depicted war as a horrific and brutal practice. Subsequent seasons have been just as unflinching and not shyed away from showing human conflict as cruel, wasteful, and pointless. Yes, the robots ARE cool, but not when they are used as tools of brutal oppression and ethnic cleansing by a totalitarian state.

This is important to do, but it has gone on for so long that a sort of outrage fatigue has been engendered in Gundam viewers. The constant parade of warcrimes, state-sanctioned atrocities, and brutal murders of beloved characters have achieved meme status among fans, and people aren't taking the biting political commentary as seriously. People need a break, and it's my understanding that Build Divers was an attempt to provide that with harmless Angelic Layer-style fun (more on Build Divers later).

While Witch From Mercury's prologue has shown us that this series will not be shying away from the traditional depictions of war as an atrocity, it looks to be focusing on a more low-stakes school life plot that borrows elements and pacing from shoujo anime - especially with so many female cast members. There is definitely an over-arching anticapitalist aesop looming in the background, but the moment-to-moment action is mostly low stakes highschool drama about the new girl and her attempts to fit in (and why the Cool Robots are part of it). This is a refreshing change of pace for Gundam.

Back to Build Divers. The reason why Witch From Mercury is notable as a palate-cleanser over Build Divers (which as far as I know contains 100% less attempted shuttle bombings) is that it is not selling gunpla as aggressively.

Yes, I know. Gundam exists to sell the toys, and the robots look Like That because it's easier to make little plastic figurines for them. Merchandising is baked into this franchise at the deepest levels, regardless of how important the anti-war political commentary is, and there is no getting away from it. However! That does not stop Build Divers being a shamlessly naked cash grab that attempts to drum up demand for mass re-releases of older kits. Build Divers is literally about buying and playing with gunpla in a way that makes it clear to customers (including kids) that this is a pastime they should pick up in real life.

It's something other anime franchises like Beyblades and B-Daman have also done, yes, but in these other cases there was not already a large and established industry to provide complimentary marketing and worm their fingers into peoples' brains until their wallets opened. Build Divers was on the nose, and was uncomfortably close to being a 30-minute commercial for gunpla. Witch From Mercury's primary focus is back on the plot, the characters, and the storytelling, which makes it much more digestible if you are not ten years old.

WFM gay, novel palate cleanser, less cringe than BD.

You ever think about how we had the chance to see so much more of Astrid in the six seasons of RTTE? I mean, where was her beef with one of the villains (imagine how cool that would have been.) Why didn't we learn more about her hobbies? Or about her family? Her house burnt down but her parents were safe but WHERE WERE THERE?? Why didn't we see more of those relationships? Where were the Astrid-centric (without Hiccup) episodes that made us learn more about her. Don't get me wrong, we still saw her do a lot of cool shit and there were like 2 episodes about that but Fishlegs got an episode every season, so did Snotlout, and so did Heather. But what about the girl who indirectly caused the chain of events that led to there being dragons on Berk? She's such an important character to the universe, and we got to see very little to nothing of her

It seems to me that the writers of rtte demonstrate a "special attitude" to Astrid primarily because she is the love interest of the main character. Like many screenwriters, they simply do not understand that "three-dimensional character" and "love interest of the main character" are not mutually exclusive concepts.

If the creators of the show perceived Astrid, first of all, as a person, and not as a Hiccup girl, then they would not erase the unconventionally attractive features of her appearance – uneven tan, big ears, uneven teeth, sloppy hairstyle, long arms, angular physique. They would most likely have given Astrid a temporary love interest (she had a lot of potential with Throk, Heather, and even Fishlegs), like most other racers. They would show more personal struggle, would reveal Astrid's relationship with any of her family members. Her fighting skills wouldn't be exaggerated or downplayed for the sake of the plot. At least one of the many conflicts between Stoick and Hiccup would be replaced by the conflict between Astrid and Hiccup. Instead of all this banal romantic nonsense (sorry), we would have more "team", "interpersonal" moments between these two. I would really like them to create an antagonist specifically for Astrid. However, this is my arrogance

it's not my preferred method of dealing with the conflict but im not as mad at it as i feared i might be with an ep 11 ending. it at the very least isn't going to sour the series for me (most likely, we still have to give ep 12 her chance obvs) and i understand most of the thought process.

BUT i understand you not feeling it so i'm here with a distraction. now that jimmysea are the it-girl of the month and i think we can assume them getting a new series has a good likely hood: what type of show would you most like to see them tackle?

personally i'd love to see them in a period piece. i just think they have the longing down so perfectly and their outfits in ep 8 were a true inspiration on many fronts. OR something supernatural since we're giving those away in 2024 anyway.

more important than genre tho is sea being allowed to be the overtly flirty one and jimmy to be the shy one this time around :))

I HAVE SO MANY KIND OF SHOWS I WANT TO SEE JIMMYSEA STAR IN THO IT'S SO HARD TO PICK ONLY ONE GENRE!!!!!!! part of me really wants that teacher x single parent romcom to happen because i NEED to see more of them with kids, but at the same time i would love to have them play in something more challenging and completely different like a thriller. im kinda obsessed with the idea of jimmy being the witness of a murder and having to be put under protection until the trial and sea being one of the police officer assigned to keep him safe OR something like the fugitive with sea being framed for a murder he did not commit and managing to escape while being taken to prison and jimmy being one of the correction officers who was on the bus and who ends up being taken 'hostage' by sea but eventually helps him prove his innocence

but also i would LOVE an historical setting for them because like you said they are SOOOO GOOD at longing and pining and restraint and subtle touches that carry so much weight and i need more of that too!!!!!! also the medical drama of my dreams!!!!!! or a good horror!!!!!! JUST GIVE THEM 100 SERIES FR SO THEY CAN EXPLORE ALL TYPES OF PLOT AND GENRE!!!!!!!!!

so yeah, tl;dr: if i had to pick i think i would go for a thriller as their next series, but im honestly fine with anything as long as they do get one.
