Mysteriously, wonderfully, I bid farewell to what goes, I greet what comes; for what comes cannot be denied, and what goes cannot be detained.

Conditional
Tumblr media
It’s easy to trust God.
When you and I can see how things are going to work out. When we have what we think we need. When we can see the plan – step A, step B, step C. That doesn’t take much faith.
But what about when you and I can’t see how things are going to work out? When we don’t have what we think we need? When we can’t see the plan?
That’s a lot harder. Too often, when we’re faced with that, we get discouraged. We get upset.
We think things like, “God, what’s happening? I’m scared. I can’t see what you’re doing right now.”
There’s nothing wrong with venting to God. Sometimes we need to. As human beings, we’re not always able to see the big picture. You and I aren’t going to understand everything.
When that happens, there’s no one better for us to go with our worries, with our fears than God.
But there’s a danger when we get discouraged. When we get upset, we can easily slide into things like, “God, why aren’t you doing something about this? This isn’t happening like it’s supposed to. God, why haven’t you fixed this already?”
Now, we’re not venting anymore. We’re telling God what to do. Whether we mean to or not – we’re telling God we won’t be happy. We’re not going to trust Him. Until He does it our way.
What we’re really saying is that our faith, our trust, is conditional. Conditional on getting our way.
One of the problems with conditional trust (and there are a lot of them) is that there will always be things that you and I don’t understand.
Things that don’t work out the way we wanted them to. Things that don’t happen fast enough. Prayers that aren’t answered our way.
If our trust in God is conditional, then we’re going to spend most of our time upset and discouraged. Because the person that we’re really trusting isn’t God. It’s us.
We’re trusting someone who, if we’re honest, is horrifyingly effective at letting us down. At falling short. At not meeting our needs. Someone who has done this to us for years.
And every time we do, we set ourselves up to be disappointed. Again.
What’s the alternative to setting ourselves up like that?
Follow the call, like we see in today’s Gospel, to trust God for our needs. And to trust Him unconditionally.
To let go of needing to know how things are going to work out. To let go of trying to see around the corners.
To tell God what we think we need. And then to let go of our list, of our “have-to’s.”
To take the pressure off, by letting God be in control.
It’s a call back to Isaiah. Where God says, “My ways are higher than your ways, My thoughts are higher than your thoughts.”
And a challenge. To not just say the words. But to live the truth of those words. That’s God’s ways are higher than our ways. That we’re not always going to understand what God is doing.
It’s not always easy. To have that kind of faith. To trust that God provides.
But the simple truth is that God always does. Even when we can’t see how.

The thing with gods is that a lot of our strengths are conditional. To fight any god within their own realm is pretty stupid unless you are far more powerful than them. And even if you fight on neutral ground, there is a lot of difference between beating someone and killing them. Gods are notoriously hard to put down.

Quote
Do not be afraid of the past. If people tell you that it is irrevocable, do not believe them. The past, the present and the future are but one moment in the sight of God, in whose sight we should try to live. Time and space, succession and extension, are merely accidental conditions of thought. The imagination can transcend them, and more in a free sphere of ideal existences. Things, also, are in their essence what we choose to make them. A thing is, according to the mode in which one looks at it.

Butterflies
Butterflies, is that what I'm feeling? Butterflies when you say something endearing; a glimmer in your eye that warms the pit in my stomach. Even the weather feels warmer and I think I'm home. I grew up thinking love was earned, was won. Which eggshell will I clumsily stumble upon; what will grey out that shine in your eye; when will you find out I'm an imposter? One risky move and I'm clawing for a sign of life, desperately wondering if it is care I seek or approval. I know love should not feel so wretched, but I wonder for how much longer I can stretch this. I convince myself it hurts because it's true. I'll tell myself anything to feel subdued. It's Disney, it's the romance movies; It's all the brainwashing, that's what the truth is. Never that this has possible, probable toxicity. Never that my worth is proven if you're happy. Never that I needed more time to heal. Never that the butterflies are just actual fear. No, it shouldn't be so taxing, shouldn't feel like oxygen given or stolen. When will the tiptoeing end? This just isn't it, dear. Tough luck, let's try again, before we have more to ache over and lament; let's go and love ourselves a little more, before we have nothing left to mend. -Mai E.

A million times
The Lord’s Prayer. The Our Father. Whatever you call it, we’ve all said it a million times.
Not that we shouldn’t. It’s worth saying a million times. And more. It’s that good (considering the source, that’s no surprise).
But even with a prayer as good as the Lord’s Prayer, there’s a danger when you and I say a prayer a million times. Our brains go on autopilot. And the words slide out of our mouths without us really noticing them.
That’s why I’m glad that today’s Gospel doesn’t stop with the text of the Our Father.
It gives us one more verse. Where Jesus explains one of the parts of the Lord’s Prayer that we miss when our brains are on autopilot – “forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.”
Jesus is pretty clear, “If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.”
God’s love is unconditional. There’s nothing that we have to do – nothing we can do – to earn it. Because God’s love is freely given.
But God’s forgiveness? It absolutely is conditional. We have to earn it.
The thing is, God doesn’t want us to do anything for Him to earn that forgiveness.
God’s not looking for us to be perfect or sinless in order to deserve His forgiveness.
What God wants us to do to earn His forgiveness? Forgive other people who have wronged us.
If I am truly a Christian. If I am serious about being God’s, about being forgiven, then I do not have the luxury of carrying a grudge.
I can’t hold onto my hatred or resentment for someone else who has hurt me. No matter how deserved it might be. No matter what they did to earn it. No matter how right I think I am.
My favorite “but-you-don’t-know-what-they-did-to-me” claim? Is met with God’s perfect knowledge of exactly what they did. And God’s perfect knowledge of the impact it is having on me.
Knowing that, God is telling me that holding on to that wrong is interfering with my own salvation, my own forgiveness.
Not because God is petty or keeping score or using it to manipulate us.
But because holding onto that wrong will in the end come between us and God. And God loves you too much to ignore anything that would come between you and Him.
And yet, all of us struggle with forgiveness.
Which is a strong clue that our feelings and ideas about forgiveness are probably out of sync with reality, with what God is actually calling us do. More on this tomorrow.

the men and boys are innocent too.
we cry "the innocent women and children" to appeal to the masses, to try and force their sympathy, but the men and boys are innocent too.
I have seen sons crying out for their mothers, their fathers, their siblings. I have seen them break down at the loss of their families. I have seen them cling to their dead and grieve.
I have seen fathers cradle their dead children, seen them kiss their faces and hold their little hands. I have seen them faint with grief when asked to identify the dead. I have seen them carry their sons and daughters. I have seen them fasting to provide what little they can for their families.
I have seen men and boys digging through the rubble with just their bare hands, I have seen them comforting strangers, playing with children, rocking them, hushing them, even if the face of such imminent danger. I have seen them cry, seen them grieve, seen them break down into each other's arms, seen them be selfless, beyond selfless, becoming something I don't have a word for.
I have seen the men who are doctors refuse to leave their patients, even when they have no medicine or supplies to give them, even when they're threatened with bombings. I have seen fathers who have lost all their children pick orphans up into their arms and proclaim them their child so they are not alone. I have seen men and boys digging pets out of the rubble.
the men are innocent too. the men and boys are being hurt and killed too. the men and boys are grieving too. the men and boys are scared too. the men and boys are fighting to save their people too. the men and boys deserve to be fought for too.
