Chapter Two: The Princess and the Jester
Rating: T
Relationships: Chrissy Cunningham/Eddie Munson
Summary: It's fifteen minutes to showtime and Eddie's a nervous wreck when he sees a familiar face in the crowd.
I’ve been absolutely blown away by the response to the first chapter of this little fic. Thank you to all my fellow Hellcheer shippers for being so welcoming. I think I originally started writing this chapter in Chrissy’s POV before deciding that it would be more fun to see it from Eddie’s perspective. After all, there’s a reason this is tagged “Idiots in Love” *wiggles eyebrows*. Thanks once again to my beta, Ry, for taking a look at this chapter. You can find her at ryleighjosephinne on AO3 and at @dustinswill on Tumblr. I hope you all enjoy part 2! I think I've read through it about five times in the last two days, so I'm ready for it to be out there.
Chapter One. Chapter Two.
Read on AO3
As Eddie waited backstage with Jeff and Grant, he fiddled with the skull ring on his pinky finger. The din of the crowd, waiting for the concert to begin, rose behind the curtain. His heart raced in time with the clock above the stage manager’s station on the black cinderblock walls.
“I can’t do this,” Eddie blanched, butterflies dancing in his stomach. “This is the biggest crowd we’ve ever played for.” He crouched on the floor while the backline and lighting crew scurried past him as if nothing was wrong.
“Hey, snap out of it,” Jeff snapped a finger in front of his face.
“But what if I mess everything up?” Eddie wondered, eyes downcast.
“You won’t,” Jeff hauled Eddie to his feet. “You electrify a crowd when you play that guitar. You’ll be fine.”
“I don’t feel fine,” Eddie scoffed, straightening his leather jacket.
“Here,” Grant walked past the sound monitors and tossed him a water bottle. “You’ll feel better.”
“I sure hope so,” Eddie muttered, twisting off the cap to take a sip. The ice-cold water glided down his throat with each gulp.
“Hey,” Gareth mused, “is that Chrissy Cunningham?”
Eddie spewed water all over the floor.
He whipped around toward Gareth, who peeked past the curtain onto the pit.
“I thought she was only coming to the Indianapolis shows?” Jeff interjected.
“She didn’t tell me she was coming!” Eddie set down his half-drunk water and marched to the curtain, peering over Gareth’s shoulder into the crowd.
Chrissy stood at the edge of the stage, looking like a fish out of water in her matching pastel blue miniskirt, sweater, and white Keds. After she checked her watch, she ran a hand through her teased strawberry-blonde hair and fidgeted with one of her many necklaces.
His stomach flipped. Chrissy wore his ring on her hand.
“That’s definitely her,” Eddie mumbled.
“You don’t think she read the interview, do you?” Gareth asked.
Eddie’s heart plummeted.
“When was that supposed to come out?” Eddie questioned through tight lips. “I was supposed to tell her not to read it until she saw me at the Indianapolis show.”
“Last Tuesday,” Jeff replied as he and Grant joined Eddie and Gareth at the curtain. “Maybe she doesn’t read Rolling Stone.”
Chrissy took a poster from the dark-skinned girl in fishnets and combat boots beside her. Eddie waited with bated breath for her to flip it over.
His heart sank once more when he read, “EDDIE MUNSON WE NEED TO TALK” in Chrissy’s perfect handwriting.
“Ouch,” Grant patted him on the back. “Sorry, dude.”
Eddie glanced at the clock above the manager’s podium—still fifteen minutes to curtain.
He could fix this.
_________
He could not fix this.
While he waited for the security guards to bring Chrissy and her friend to their small green room, every tick of the clock reverberated against the white-washed walls. His heartbeat slowed to match; butterflies danced in his chest.
Eddie paced up and down the room, shaking his hands as he dodged the cherry coffee table in front of the couch.
“Dude, sit down,” Gareth called from the couch. “You’re gonna give yourself a headache.”
Eddie bit his lip. “Alright.”
He perched on the brown couch between Jeff and Grant, tapping his fingers on his bouncing leg.
He froze as the green room door creaked open.
Without ceremony, a security guard ushered Chrissy and her friend inside and closed the door behind them.
Chrissy glowed, her strawberry-blonde hair framing her face like a cover girl on a magazine.
The silence hung thick between them, so thick you could cut it with a knife.
Eddie sprang to his feet.
“Chrissy.” Eddie choked out. “Hi.”
“Hi,” she squeaked back.
Jeff broke the tension. “Chrissy, are you going to introduce us to your friend?”
“Right,” Chrissy shook her head as if in a daze. “Guys, this is my roommate, Stacey.”
Stacey waved behind her, her enthusiasm jingling the upwards of ten bracelets she wore on each arm. “Stacey, this is Eddie, Gareth, Jeff, and Grant.”
“It’s nice to meet you,” Stacey gushed, twirling one of her braids. “I’m a huge fan.“
“Any friend of Chrissy’s is a friend of ours,” Grant said as he shook her hand.
The room settled back into silence. Eddie studied Chrissy like a starving man at a feast, drinking in every last drop of her before she inevitably told him to go to hell.
Gareth slapped his knees and rose from the couch. “Stacey, how would you like to see the stage?”
“I would be honored,” Stacey tipped her head in a mock bow.
“Fantastic!” Gareth grinned. “Jeff and Grant, let’s give Stacey the full tour.”
Grant put down his water as he got up to leave.
“Shouldn’t you guys stay here so the crew can find us?” Eddie asked, fiddling with the edge of his flannel.
“It’ll be fine,” Jeff said through gritted teeth. “We’ll just let Rodney know what we’re doing.” He mouthed, “Talk to her!” while he filed out of the room, leading Gareth, Grant, and Stacey toward the stage.
As she left, Stacey turned back, gave him two thumbs up and winked.
“Have fun!” Chrissy called out to her without looking away, the foreboding poster still dangling from her fingers. Eddie gulped.
When the door clicked closed and they were alone, Eddie rubbed the back of his head, “Chrissy, I—“
“I read the interview—“ Chrissy interrupted him softly, “—in Rolling Stone.”
“Oh,” the color drained from Eddie’s cheeks. “You saw that. You weren’t supposed to see it until I could tell you myself.”
He crossed the room and grabbed her shoulders.
“Look, pretend I never said anything,” Eddie pleaded as her bright eyes filled with tears. “We can go back to the way it was.”
Chrissy shook her head. “Eddie, I don’t think I can.” Her voice wavered.
“No, no,” Eddie stepped back. “Please don’t, Chrissy. I can’t lose—“
The door to the Green Room slammed open.
“Five minutes to your set, Mr. Munson,” the PA said, not even bothering to glance up from his clipboard.
“Coming,” Eddie called as the PA walked away. He turned back to Chrissy but avoided her tearful gaze. “I’ve got to go.” He shouldered past her, continuing, “If you want, you can watch us from the wings. I’m sure the guys already dropped Stacey off. It’s a really great view and—“
“Edward Munson, would you stop talking for once!” Chrisy seethed.
Eddie whirled around in the cinderblock hallway, already halfway toward the stage. Chrissy stood in the green room door, tightly clenching her poster. An angry flush bloomed across her cheeks and bled down her neck into her blue sweater.
Eddie put his hands in his pockets. “I don’t understand.”
“I can’t forget,” Chrissy’s voice quivered, “because . . . because . . . Oh, gosh darn it!”
Eddie reeled back as Chrissy hurled her poster aside and flung herself into his arms. On instinct, he reached his arms around her waist to steady her as she cradled his head, pulling him closer. She jammed their lips together, and in an instant, every anxiety about the upcoming concert vanished.
The world slowed to a standstill around them.
She tasted like strawberries.
Chrissy pulled back with a lazy grin, holding onto the collar of Eddie’s jacket. “I would have said yes if you asked.” Her skin was warm where his hands crept under her sweater. “So now I’m asking you: will you go out with me?”
“What?” Eddie blinked.
“Mr. Munson, you’re needed on stage,” the PA tapped his shoulder, pulling him out of the daze.
“Right,” he grabbed Chrissy by the wrist and dragged her to where Stacey and the rest of the band waited in the wings just out of sight of the crowd.
Depositing her next to her roommate, Eddie fiddled with the hem of her sweater.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes,” Chrissy bristled. “Absolutely.”
“Just had to be sure,” Eddie smirked as he leaned in to give her a quick peck on the lips.
Stacey squealed as the rest of the band gasped. Eddied gave them the finger as he pulled back.
“Yes, Chrissy, I will go out with you,” he answered as the lights dimmed over the crowd and their intro music blared through the speaker system. The crowd roared in applause, chanting “Corroded Coffin” in time to the beat.
Chrissy melted, stars in her eyes as she watched him go.
“I’ll even be your man forever if you like,” Eddie shouted back to her as he backed away.
Giddy, Eddie jogged onto the stage behind his bandmates and assumed his position in front of his microphone downstage left as Jeff approached the mike center stage.
Grabbing his beloved red guitar off the stand, Eddie slung it over his back.
Out of the corner of his eye, he watched Chrissy in the wings, who blew him a kiss. Beside her, Stacey looked like she was about to faint.
Eddie tinkered with the frets on his guitar.
The backing music cut out. Gareth counted them in on drums as the spot came up on Grant. With precise fingers, he picked out the opening to “Unworthy”.
Eddie tapped his foot, waiting for his turn. In eight bars, he would come in with his signature riff.
He took one last look at Chrissy. She clasped her hands tight.
Eddie winked at her before ripping into his opening chord. The sound reverberated through the stadium as the spotlight above him blasted on, a blindingly hot beam of white light. Eddie closed his eyes. He glided across the strings, plucking out a melodious cacophony.
When he finished his riff, he opened his eyes and glanced at the crowd. They watched the band with rapt attention. Eddie settled into his element.
Jeff stepped up to the mike as the last spotlight blared on. The crowd was putty in his hands.
“We’re Corroded Coffin!” Jeff shouted. “Let’s get ready to rock!”
_____
“Thanks for being such a great crowd, Pittsburgh!” Jeff yelled into the mike. “We’ve got a couple more songs for you all, but I’m going to pass the mike over to Eddie to introduce this next song.”
Eddie glanced between Jeff and the audience without missing a beat.
Jeff nodded toward Chrissy, waiting for him in the wings.
She gave him two thumbs up and mouthed, “You got this!”
Eddie smiled and turned back to the booming crowd. The stage lights beat down on him—he could barely make out any faces beyond the first row.
“Hey, everyone,” he waved. “ I’m Eddie.”
The crowd roared.
“I love you, Eddie!” one guy screamed.
“Thank you,” Eddie joked, placing a hand over his heart. “I’m touched.” He leaned his bare arm on the neck of his guitar. He’d lost the jacket and the flannel somewhere halfway through their set, when he was singing lead on their cover of "11th Street Kids". “So funny story about this next song . . . And every love song that I’ve ever written. They’re all about my best friend—“ A cheer rose from the crowd as Eddie vamped the opening of the next song. “If you read our interview in Rolling Stone, I admitted I’ve been in love with her for years, and I never told her, even though she’s gotten demos of every song I’ve ever written.” He paused for dramatic effect—the crowd waited with bated breath. A rivulet of sweat darted between his shoulders. “She hasn’t heard this song before.” He winked; the crowd screamed. He plucked the strings with a gentle touch. “Whenever I’m in her presence, I am but a humble court jester devoted to a beautiful, unattainable princess, unworthy of her attention, only desiring to hear that melodious laugh for one more time.” Eddie sighed pathetically. “That’s all I thought I would ever be, her court jester.”
He waited again, the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand. He smirked.
“But apparently, I was wrong. She’s here tonight, and she just asked me out!”
Cheers and whoops rose from the crowd.
“I said yes, of course.” Eddie winked. “Guess I’ll have to come up with some new material for the next album.”
The crowd laughed.
Eddie picked up the tempo, queuing Grant on bass and Gareth on drums. The rhythm coursed through him like lightning as the lights flashed and smoke rose from the floor. It was a good thing they had been practicing to start playing this song after the Indianapolis show next year.
“This song is called ‘The Princess and the Jester’.” He glanced at the wings. Half in shadow and flushed with excitement, Chrissy bounced along to the song.
They locked eyes as time seemed to slow down. Eddie kept the rhythm but couldn’t take his eyes off her.
“Chrissy, this one’s for you.”

Now with a part two!
There’s a guy that comes to the cafe Eddie’s working at. Every other day, he comes to the counter, smiles at Eddie and gives him a post-it with “hi, an americano with two sugars please :)” written on it. He has a different color of post-it assigned for every day. Eddie smiles back and makes the americano, trying to keep his heart from jumping out of his chest.
Needless to say, the guy is insanely cute. He has swoopy chestnut hair, droopy, almost puppy-like eyes, and two moles on his neck that make him look like he’s been bitten by a vampire. Eddie’s not sure if he finds it more adorable or sexy; either way, he’s definitely developed a crush. And now, after months of trying to gather up his courage to say hi, after months of pining and staring from afar... He’s still nowhere near ready to talk to him. And Chrissy’s not letting him live it down.
“You’re insufferable,” she whispers to him frantically when the guy comes through the door on the first Monday of December. “Do something more than smile dumbly or I’ll fire you.”
“You can’t fire me,” Eddie hisses back as he tries to dust pastry crumbs off of his shirt.
“I’m the manager. I can do whatever I want,” she chirps back and goes on to cleaning the machines that don’t need to be cleaned, because Eddie did that twenty minutes ago.
The guy comes to the counter. There are snowflakes in his hair, big and soft. Eddie thinks that they compliment his eyes—then he realizes that it’s a weird thing to notice about a stranger.
The stranger smiles. Eddie smiles back. Today’s post-it is light purple.
Eddie makes the americano. It’s muscle memory at this point, he’s not even thinking about what he’s doing until he has to force a lid onto the cup and serve it to his customer. Hell, whatever. He grabs a sharpie and bends down to drabble something on the cup, trying not to spill the coffee. He manages to draw an ugly looking snake that was supposed to be a dragon, cringes, writes “Have a nice day!” underneath it and prays that it isn’t too weird.
Of course it is. But, miraculously, the guy looks at it, huffs a tiny laugh and smiles right at Eddie and – yeah, whatever, curse him – the whole room lights up. Yes, it’s sappy. Sue him. He could be sappy for this guy—if the guy wanted it.
He takes his coffee and leaves, but before he crosses the threshold, he turns back and waves at Eddie, using only three fingers. It’s a small wave, but a wave nonetheless, so Eddie sends him his best grin and waves back.
When he’s finally out, Eddie bends over the counter and groans. Chrissy pats him between the shoulderblades, mocking sympathy. “You’re on probation,” she whispers. Eddie groans once again. This is hell.
***
He has to call in sick on Wednesday. Now that he’s thinking about it, he kind of knew that the mayo smelled funny and it wasn’t good anymore. But he’s a broke college student and he had a choice: stale bread with mayo and a slice of tomato, or just stale bread with a slice of tomato. These weren’t even real choices. It was suffering or suffering.
Apparently, he’d chosen double suffering, and he had a whole night of hurling to prove it. Good thing he doesn’t have to send Chrissy any photos of what he had to deal with – when he calls, she cuts him off with “Just take my afternoon shift tomorrow and we’re even. You’ll miss out on your cutie, it’s a punishment in and of itself,” and goes on with her day.
Eddie’s so grateful for Chrissy. He wouldn’t get anywhere without her.
***
Eddie doesn’t expect his guy to come on Thursday, it isn’t his regular schedule, so he’s in for a surprise when his morning shift ends and turns into Chrissy’s afternoon shift, and then, some time later, his guy comes in—and he’s not alone.
He’s with a girl. With a pretty, pretty girl, who has beautifully curly brown hair, inquisitive eyes and kind but determined expression on her face. There’s something quite unique about her; Eddie thinks, briefly, that she looks like she’s from another era. Like if they were living in the 80s, she would have a perm, wear bold lipstick and have a whole wall of degrees and certificates in her office. She seems to be destined for great things. She’s a badass.
Eddie’s nothing like her. He tries to swallow down the jealousy as they near the counter. His – his? – guy looks surprised, but smiles either way, his eyes lighting up in a matter of seconds.
“Hi,” the girl says. Her own smile is so nice and warm Eddie can’t stay mopey for too long. “I’ll have a latte with two shots of espresso, and…”
She turns to the guy beside her, but Eddie doesn’t have to know the answer. “An americano with two sugars. On it.”
Their eyes lock for a second. The guy seems a bit shy, but he’s still smiling. Eddie counts that as a win. But he’s still quick with their coffees. He can sense the staring contest they’re having even while he has his back turned to them. He kinda wants them gone, but they didn’t ask for to go, so he just tries to stay calm. Focused. Sharp.
Fortunately, he doesn’t spill anything. They get their order and sit in a corner. It doesn’t look like a date, they pull out books and notes, scribble and sign from time to time. The girl clearly knows more than just the basics of ASL, unlike Eddie. Since the guy started showing up, he’s been trying to learn more about it, but now he makes a mental note to enroll on a course. It’s time to commit – to what, exactly, he’s not sure. But he’s gonna make it happen.
Hours pass, but they stay in the same position. Eddie steals a glance every now and then, trying not to let his jealousy get to the surface again, but it’s hard. The guy is cute, the girl is smart and beautiful. He decides to call Chrissy on his way home – if he has to pine, she’ll suffer with him.
The end of his shift is nearing when he hears a giggle from the godforsaken corner. He looks up from the cups he’s been rearranging and sees that it’s his guy’s girl who’s laughing. She’s laughing at yet another girl, who’s standing outside and drawing hearts on the dirty window. She has a goofy grin on her face, one that makes her eyes and her prominent cheekbones pop even more, and it’s the same grin that the girl inside is wearing at the moment.
Now, Eddie doesn’t know a lot about love, but he definitely recognizes heart eyes when he sees them. He smiles to himself – don’t judge a book by its cover, huh?
His guy looks exasperated about being completely ignored, so he taps the glass a few times. The girl outside looks at him, shocked, like she’s only just seen him now, sticks out her tongue at him, and goes back to blowing kisses at her girlfriend. The guy looks truly wounded. Eddie snorts; the dynamic here is immaculate.
In the meantime, the not-his-guy's girl has gathered her things and prepared to leave. She kisses his cheek on her way out, but the guy stays put, bending over his papers again. Eddie thinks it’s quite interesting. Then, he makes a plan.
When he’s done with work, his guy is still there. Which is perfect. Eddie fixes his hair one last time, trying to gauge whether his outfit is metal enough (it is) for the occasion, and grabs the americano with two sugars he’s made.
It’s alright. Everything’s alright.
His wildly beating heart isn’t so sure about that.
When he gets to his guy’s table, he sets the piece of paper on it first. “Looks like you’re swamped – it’s on the house,” it says. The guy looks up, surprised, his mouth opened in a tiny oh. His eyes go wide for a moment and then he smiles. Something warm settles inside Eddie’s chest.
The guy picks up a pen and writes “Thank you!!!” on Eddie’s piece of paper, but before giving it back, he changes his mind. “I’m Steve,” he scribbles, and then gives it back with a flash of smile.
He smiles a lot. It’s an amazing sight.
“Hello, Steve. I’m Eddie. Nice to meet you,” Eddie replies. “What are you working on?” he adds after a second, because he’s feeling bold and he really doesn’t want to go yet.
The guy – Steve – sighs. He makes some room on the loveseat he’s occupying and pushes his books to the middle. Eddie takes it as a cue to sit down. Their knees bump, Eddie gets goosebumps, but he doesn’t move away. Neither does Steve.
“I’ve got an assignment on modern fantasy and its mythological origins, but I’m not as nerdy as my friends so I’m struggling a bit. Nance helped, but she’s not an expert either and my other nerdy friends went for a trip. Maybe you have any experience?”
Eddie’s eyes open wide and he bounces with excitement, nodding his head along the way. “YES,” he writes, all caps, and Steve huffs another laugh. They look at each other then, Eddie all hyped and ready, Steve—soft? There’s no other way to describe it. His gaze is gentle, almost caring. Eddie can feel his cheeks warm up.
His phone buzzes aggressively in his pocket. He checks it – it’s Chrissy. She’s got her period and she’s out of tampons.
“Shit,” he mumbles. Steve bumps their shoulders.
“What’s up?” he asks.
Eddie picks up the pen. “Tiny emergency, I’m sorry. Tomorrow?”
He knows that his hopeful stare must seem desperate, but Steve reads his reply, looks up and smiles, nodding. Eddie wants to scream victory, but he only nods back and gets up instead. When he’s about to turn and leave, he feels fingers wrap around his hand, delicate but firm. Slowly, Steve opens up his hand and writes something on it.
It’s a phone number. “In case you get sick again :)”
Eddie can’t hold back his dopey smile any longer. When he looks at Steve, the corners of his lips quirk up too. He’s lovely.
Eddie can’t wait for tomorrow.

The gym is filled with girls dressed in their cheer uniforms, the color green is starting to give you a headache, just like the sound of giggles and hushed whispers as the girls next to you talk about the latest gossip. Another supposed breakup.
This time it’s Tommy and Carol again.
Just three weeks back, you heard rumors about Steve and Nancy’s apparent breakup,  which turned out to be just a rumor, considering you’ve seen them together – maybe less than before but they are still around each other, laughing and smiling just like before.
Clearly, they are still together.
But teenagers love to make up rumors – especially about people like you and Steve. Despite both yours and his fall down the social ladder, you are still the hot topics of the school.
They love to make up rumors about your relationship or past relationship with Steve and your friendship with Eddie – or as they still like to call him, the freak.
Apparently you and Eddie had been seen making out in his van.
Apparently you and Eddie have been in a secret relationship since august, last year.
Apparently you cheated on the king with the freak.
Apparently the satan worshiper had cursed your relationship with the king – so he could have you.
Apparently you are pregnant with Eddie’s baby and living in his trailer.
Apparently you and Eddie are in love and secretly married – at least, you understand that rumor. The matching rings on both yours and his ring finger may have been the cause of it.
The pregnancy rumor made you physically sick – it made you stand in front of the mirror, checking for signs that you had gained weight. You did not, it still made you feel nauseous and you had to cancel your dinner ‘date’ with your friends.
A sigh falls from your lips when you hear Teresa talking about her future in college – Princeton to be exact. Of course the cute brunette has it all, beauty and brains. The straight A student isn’t only one of the smartest students in Hawkins High, she is also one of the prettiest – cat eyes, a small nose and big lips, she is thin but her boobs are, well, they are huge.
You wonder why you were ever crowned as the queen when girls like her exist. When girls like Heather and Chrissy exist.
You wonder why Steve ever even looked your way.
You look down at yourself, your uniform is perfectly ironed, your skin is soft and glowing after scrubbing and lathering it in moisturizer earlier this morning. You reach for the mirror in your bag, wanting to check on your makeup, one more time before the photoshooting. Your hair looks good, your make up looks good and yet, you still don’t like the way you look.
“Well, don’t you look beautiful.”
The frown on your face disappears when you hear his voice. Looking over your shoulder,  you see Eddie leaning against the doorframe. He is eying you with a smile on his face. He ignores all the nasty looks from the other cheerleaders before they continue getting ready for the little photo session with Jonathan – who is getting just as many nasty looks as Eddie does.
You put the little mirror down and walk over to him, smoothing down your skirt as you take in the sight of him. He was forced to leave his leather jacket at home and he had already been whining about it since the early morning hours. Clad in his favorite jeans and a metallica shirt, you can’t help but miss the leather on his skin – it’s his staple piece but, it’s the end of May, much to Eddie’s dismay it’s too warm to walk around with vests and jackets.
You like seeing his tattoos though and his hair in ponytail or a bun when it does get a little too warm.
“Hi,” you say, giving him a sweet smile as you halt in front of him.
He smiles down at you, tapping your nose, “hey sweetheart.”
“Wanna join the photo session?” You joke, gesturing to the girls who are still getting ready as Jonathan is setting up his tripod and his camera.
“Yeah,” Eddie says, “give me a uniform and I’m in.”
Giggling, you shake your head, “your butt would look cute in a cheer skirt.”
“Oh, not as cute as yours,” he winks, grinning at you when you look away with a blush on your cheeks.
“Are you enjoying the last day as the cheer captain?”
“You have no idea how much I wanna get rid of that title,” you laugh, “I’m ready to give that position up to Chrissy.”
You haven’t been loving cheerleading as much as you used to. Things changed, especially this year.
“I’m ready to get the hell out of here.”
“You and me both, sweetheart.”
“You know, I always thought that I’d go to college after high school,” you say as you look around the room, “but now, I’m just lost. I wouldn’t even know what to major in if I did go to college a-and I don’t even know what college I’d go to – and why am I even stressing about it, it’s too late for that now–”
Eddie places his hands on your shoulders, “I thought we settled on not stressing about our future anymore.”
“Yeah but–”
“No buts,” Eddie chuckles, “you’re taking a gap year, you still got your job at the record store and I’ll work at the garage, we’ll save up some money this summer and then–”
“And then we’ll go on that road trip.”
“Exactly,” he smiles, “we’ve been planning it for weeks now, don’t let college ruin that.”
Your shoulders slump and you sigh, “I just, I hear all of them talking about college,” you pause, gesturing to the girls behind you, “a-and it makes me think that maybe it was a mistake not to apply to any.”
His eyes soften at the worry in your eyes, he shakes his head.
“I don’t think it’s a mistake.”
“It’s not?”
“No, you got all the time in the world to join all these boring people in the normal world,” he chuckles, pulling you closer, “let’s live in our own world for a little longer,” he smiles, tucking a loose strand of hair behind your ear before he fixes the bow in your ponytail.
“Our dreams will be crushed the moment we step into the real world, let’s not let that happen so soon.”
You eye his face and curl of his lips as he stares at you.
“Our own world,” you smile, nodding, “I think I like that more anyways.”
“Yeah?” He grins.
“Yeah.”
“Good.”
“Good,” you repeat after him, making him chuckle.
He tilts his head with a smile on his face, “did you do your make up differently?”
“Uh yeah, I did pink eye shadow today,” you chuckle, “I’m surprised you noticed it, guys usually don’t pay attention to these things.”
“I’m offended that you think I’m one of those guys,” he jokes, placing his hand on his chest, “I notice everything about you, sweetheart.”
He notices every slight change. A different hairstyle, new clothes, the new color of your lipstick, the slightest change in your behavior, your eating habits, your struggles. He notices it all.
“You look gorgeous.”
“Thanks,” you smile but the look in your eyes isn’t genuine and it makes him frown.
“Not as gorgeous as Teresa.”
“Who the fuck is Teresa,” he mumbles in confusion.
You point to the cheerleader and Eddie follows your gaze. You watch him closely as he looks at the pretty cheerleader.
Does he think she’s gorgeous? Does he think she looks better than you? Does he think she looks sexy in her tight uniform? Does he think her boobs look good?
The reaction you expected never comes, he scrunches his face up and a look of distaste crosses his features.
“That bitch threw gum in my hair.”
A laugh tumbles from your lips, you cup your hand over your mouth when the others turn to look at you.
“That’s not funny, y/n!” Eddie frowns, though his eyes are filled with amusement, “Wayne had to cut a chunk of my hair because I couldn’t get it out.”
“Your poor hair!” You pout, reaching out to touch his curls.
Both you and Eddie are unaware of the new set of eyes watching the two of you.
Steve just left the coach’s office, passing by the gym when he heard your laughter, he couldn’t help but peek inside the open gym.
His eyes fall on you, right away.
It’s been a while since you had talked, though you had been more present in his life since the night before your birthday, you were still far from actually being back in his life. The only interactions the two of you have are the ones in the hallway or in classes, greeting one another and saying goodbye. That’s all but he wishes he would see more of you.
Things haven’t been easy in the past few weeks, he barely passed the exams, sleepless nights haunt him and his days usually consist of reading and trying to better his cooking skills – he has nothing else to do. He has no one to talk to, no one to hang out with, no one to be with, not even his parents.
He had never been more miserable than he is right now.
There you are, pressing yourself against Eddie as you play with his hair, looking happier than ever.
Eddie, who wraps his arm around your waist and looks down at you like you are the most precious thing in this world.
Steve’s eyes are filled with nothing but sadness. He doesn’t even have the power to feel jealous anymore.
“Hey Steve!”
Shit.
All eyes are now on him, including yours and Eddie’s.
Steve tears his eyes away from you and turns to look at Jonathan who is walking towards him with his camera. By the look in his eyes, Steve can tell that he wants to do anything but talk to him.
“Uh – it’s good that you’re here,” Jonathan mumbles, holding the camera up, “Principle Higgins asked for a picture of you and y/n.”
Steve’s brows furrow and confusion takes over his face, “me and y/n?” He asks, “why?”
Jonathan shrugs, refraining from rolling his eyes, “cause you’re the captain of the basketball team and she’s cheer captain.”
“Oh.”
Jonathan looks away from Steve, glancing in your direction, waving you over.
You look just as confused as Steve does but you make your way over to them nonetheless.
“Hi,” you mumble to Steve before your eyes find Jonathan who stands between you two, awkwardly.
“Hey,” Steve smiles at you.
“Principle Higgins wants a picture of you two together,” Jonathan explains to you, “cause you’re both Captains.”
You raise your brows, “uh okay,” you snort, “what does the cheer captain have to do with–”
“Don’t ask me, y/n,” Jonathan chuckles as he motions for you both to follow him, “I’m just as confused.”
“That’s weird,” you mumble, glancing at Steve who’s awfully quiet.
“Let’s do it in front of the banners,” Jonathan looks over his shoulder, giving you a small smile but avoiding Steve’s eyes – you notice it.
Does he feel guilty about kissing his girlfriend? You saw them together yesterday, Nancy and Jonathan. They didn’t even bother to hide their affection. They kissed in the parking lot in front of everyone to see. All they got were a few weird looks, no one seemed to pay much attention to them – no one except for you. You stood frozen in place, a mix of confusion and anger rushing through you.
Despite the things that Steve had done to you, he still didn’t deserve that.
You didn’t know whether you should tell him or not, by the sullen look in his eyes, you can tell that he already knows.
“Alright, just uh–” Jonathan waves his hand at you and Steve, looking around awkwardly, “scoot a little closer.”
You don’t have to look around the gym to see all the eyes on you, you can feel them and you can hear the hushed whispers.
Steve ignores them but he can’t help but take a look at Eddie who is still standing in the same spot as before. He watches you.
You step closer to Steve, when he lifts his arm up for you. You place your hand on his back and he places his hand on your waist. Steve looks away from Eddie when the latter looks down.
Jonathan looks through his camera, squinting his eyes as he motions with his hand, “a little closer, y/n.”
Steve feels your body closer against his, your hand slides down to his waist, your touch fills him with a warmth that he hasn’t felt in a long time, it makes his heart beat a little faster, it fills him with life.
If a simple touch of your hand can make him feel such things, he wonders what a kiss from you would cause.
For a moment, he forgets about his surroundings and what he is supposed to be doing. The sound of chatter, whispers and giggles fly by him. His attention is on you and he basks in the feeling of being so close to you, of feeling your touch, of being able to look at you – not from afar but from such a close distance.
After a few snaps, Jonathan pulls back to look at the pictures he just took, he furrows his brows and glances up at the two of you.
“What’s wrong?” You ask, not pulling away from Steve just yet, “do I look okay?”
Jonathan huffs with a soft chuckle, “yeah, you look good but uh, Steve? You’re supposed to look into the camera,” he says awkwardly.
Your breath hitches in your throat when you look up to see him staring at you – now with a blush on his cheeks. Oh. He wasn’t looking into the camera because he was too busy looking at you.
He closes his eyes, furrowing his brows, “right.”
You can’t help but smile to yourself – a flustered Steve is not something you will ever get used to.
“Alright,” Jonathan mumbles after snapping a few more pictures, “I got it now.”
He looks up from his camera, giving Steve a tight lipped smile, “thanks Steve, you can go now,” he says before he steps away himself.
You feel the hesitation in his touch before he lets go of you, stepping away slowly.
“Alright uh, I’m gonna,” he mumbles, scratching the back of his neck as he points to the entrance.
“Yeah,” you whisper but you hesitate as well and you find yourself looking into his eyes again.
The sadness has taken over.
You know that he knows about Nancy and Jonathan.
Why is he still with her?
Why is he still with her after everything he said to you?
Why is he still with her when she is seeing someone else?
He gives you a halfhearted smile before he turns away but you stop him, reaching for his hand before he can take the first step away from you. You grip it tightly, unaware of the feeling in his heart that you had caused with yet another simple touch.
He looks down at your hand only to notice another, new ring adorning your hand. A skull ring on your ring finger – he doesn’t know why such a small item can cause him so much despair. He doesn’t have to ask to know where or who you had gotten it from.
“Are you okay?”
The softness in your voice matches the one in your eyes, it makes him want to cry.
How could he ever be okay without you in his life?
Now that he had finally dropped the act and let go of a fake love, he had nothing to hold onto anymore.
He lost his best friend, he lost the love of his life, he lost the one. All because he was an insecure coward.
The past few weeks have shown him how much he had truly ruined, how alone he really is without you in his life.
He needed to lose you to realize that you are all he ever wanted.
He doesn’t need a bunch of friends who don’t even care about him nor does he need girls chasing after him or the popularity that he no longer has or even wants.
You, he only wants you.
But he won’t fight for someone who he doesn’t deserve to have.
You look at him with worry in your eyes as you wait for him to answer your question.
No. No, he is not okay.
He has never felt more lost in his life than he does at this moment.
The emptiness in his chest is eating at him and he doesn’t know how to keep going when every day feels like hell.
Every night he stares at the bottles of expensive whiskey in his dad’s office, contemplating whether or not he should just drink until he no longer feels anything. Deep down he knows that the whiskey would just make everything so much worse.
Maybe it would lead him back to you, maybe it would lead him to the phone on his nightstand, maybe he would make the mistake of calling or even seeing you only to beg for another chance – which would only end in heartbreak.
You won’t take him back.
Steve will forever hate himself for losing you.
“Yeah,” he says, forcing a smile on his face, “I’m okay.”
And for a moment, it isn’t a lie. For a moment, he does feel okay when he still feels your hand in his, when he sees the worry and the softness in your beautiful eyes and the necklace around your neck, the locket that he gave you. You are wearing it. And that alone is enough for his heart to flutter and for the emptiness in his chest to disappear – even if only temporary.
He avoids your eyes and that proves to you that he isn’t okay but just like he never pressured you, you don’t do it either.
“A-Are you going to college?” You ask, not wanting him to go so soon.
Your question surprises him, it’s been a long time since you had initiated a conversation.
“No,” he says, shaking his head. “It doesn’t seem really appealing to me.”
“But you wanted to go to college, Steve.”
He runs his fingers through his hair, tilting his head with a small chuckle.
“That uh, that was our dream. I only wanted to go to college with you.”
His hand is still in yours, his sad eyes are still gazing into yours.
“You wanted to go to college with me?” Your eyes widen when he nods, “for me?”
“Yeah,” he breathes, “I couldn’t stand the thought of being away from you so,” he trails off as he watches the way sadness crosses your features.
Your heart jumps at his words.
“That’s uh, that’s funny,” you laugh, “cause I couldn’t stand the thought of being away from you so I always told you that I had this huge college dream when I never even knew what I actually wanted.”
Steve’s brows furrow and his eyes fill with confusion but also with amusement.
“Really?” He chuckles.
“Yeah.”
His eyes crinkle and his smile widens.
“Wow. We would’ve gone to college together not knowing that it’s something neither of us wanted,” he says, “unless it’s something that you want now?”
“Oh no,” you mumble, “I-I’m not going to college. For now, I’m stuck at the record store which is actually being moved to Starcourt soon.”
His eyes light up.
“Oh, the record store is being moved?”
“Yeah!”
“I guess we’ll keep seeing each other then.”
While the thought leaves him with excitement, it must leave you with annoyance – at least that’s what he thinks.
The look on your face is puzzled.
“I got a job at the ice cream parlor,” he clears his throat, “Scoops Ahoy.”
Suddenly, he feels embarrassed and his cheeks heat up. You used to date a king, a popular guy, the captain of the basketball team with his apparent bright athlete future.
And now he is just Steve Harrington who barely got his diploma, who threw his athlete future down the drain to work at an ice cream parlor. How humiliating.
Your jaw drops and your eyes widen, “no way! Scoops Ahoy?”
“Yeah..”
“Oh my god!” You giggle excitedly. “I’ll be your regular.”
Steve can’t help but laugh at your enthusiasm.
“You did love your ice cream.”
“Yeah, I still do.”
You are still smiling at him and he can’t help but smile back at you. This almost feels like a dream – standing here with your hand still in his, laughing and smiling with you like the past no longer matters.
“Y/n!” Chrissy calls for you.
You tear your eyes away from his and glance over his shoulder.
Chrissy motions for you to join her and the other cheerleaders – who are all trying to hide the fact that they were just staring at you and Steve.
“Come on!” She says as she glares at Steve’s back.
“Yeah, I’m coming.”
Steve’s face falls, though his smile still lingers when you look back at him. You remove your hand from his.
“So uh, I guess I’ll see you around?”
He nods, “yeah,” he mumbles.
You step away from him but this time, he stops you. With a hand on your wrist and your name falling from his lips, he makes you halt in your tracks.
You look back at him with raised brows.
His soft eyes make your heart race, his touch makes you feel warm.
“You look beautiful.”
“Thank you,” you whisper.
He knows you don’t believe it, you never did, no matter how many times he told you these words, you never believed them.
“The locket looks good on you,” he smiles.
You place your other hand on your chest, touching the locket, “thanks, I love it.”
Chrissy rolls her eyes, watching the interaction between you and Steve. Annoyed at the affection and the smiles you are giving him, she forces herself to look away.
Steve always finds a way to sneak his way back into your life. He doesn’t deserve you, not after everything that happened.
She knows that you might never stop loving him but she hopes that your love for him won’t stop you from letting another one in. She narrows her eyes, glancing at the metalhead who is still standing by the door, watching you with an intense look on his face, one that can only be described as jealousy.
It’s the same look you always wore when you saw Steve with other girls.
She sighs, shaking her head.
Chrissy might not be a close friend of Eddie’s but she knows that his feelings for you are nowhere near platonic and she knows that what you are feeling might be deeper than that too, though you are still oblivious, too focused on your feelings for your ex boyfriend.
She hopes that you will let go of them someday.

The first big summer storm hits the town of Hawkins on a Friday afternoon. The rain is falling down harshly from the sky, the wind is howling through the trees, the bright lighting lights up the darkened sky every few seconds as the thunder crashes loudly.
The streets are empty as the water flushes down the road.
Of course you had to come to the library today.
You should’ve come here tomorrow, you should’ve stayed home.
You tried to leave the library when the storm just started but the librarian, an elderly woman named Margaret, refused to let you leave. She forced a book into your hand and told you to take a seat by the window.
She didn’t even let you put up a fight. She offered you a cup of coffee and told you to wait out the storm.
It’s been an hour but the storm is still raging and you are becoming restless. You hate being stuck in public places.
You take the book that she gave you and leave the table, giving her a tight lipped smile as you pass by the counter.
“Don’t worry, I’m not trying to sneak out,” you whisper to her when she gives you a pointed look.
“You better not, young lady,” she says with a mean voice but her eyes are kind.
You chuckle at her, flashing her a smile before you disappear into the aisle where the shelves are filled with nothing but dramatic romances and sad love stories – your favorites.
The smell of paper and coffee, the sound of rain and thunder fills you with a nostalgic feeling. You love these types of afternoons, sitting down with a book you love, listening to the rain paddling down the windows after you light up your favorite candle and drinking a hot cup of coffee – too bad you did not stay at home, you could have done just that.
As you walk down the aisle and you trace the books, trying to find one that calls for you, you don’t find a story that you would love to read, instead, you find the girl that has been the cause of a lot of pain in your life.
You halt in your tracks when you find her sitting in the little nook by the window. A large book resting on her lap.
You don’t know why you freeze, why you don’t just walk away, why you keep standing there like a fool as you stare at the girl that stole your boyfriend – ex boyfriend.
She glances up from her book when she feels your eyes on her.
For a moment, she freezes too and stares back at you.
What are you doing? Just walk away. The angel on your shoulder whispers, trying to save you from the awkwardness of this situation.
No. Confront her. Tell her what you saw.
You were never one to let the devil win. You were always a good, obedient girl. Always listening to the things the good ones whispered to you. Always doing what you were supposed to do. Always being kind and sweet to everyone around you. Always doing the right thing.
Maybe that is where you went wrong, by doing the apparent right things.
But you never did what you wanted to do.
So you let the devil for once – or maybe the devil is actually the angel and the angel that has been whispering all these discouraging words to you, is actually the devil in disguise,  waiting for you to fail, changing your mind about the things that you want.
“Can I help you?” Nancy asks slowly.
You notice that her hair is shorter than it used to be, a few of her curls fall from the clip that is holding her hair together.
“No,” you shake your head.
She furrows her brows when you make your way over to her.
“But there’s something that I wanted to talk to you about.”
“You wanted to talk to me?” She asks, pointing between the two of you.
Surprised that you want to talk to her now.
You nod.
Nancy can’t help but feel nervous. Despite her dislike for you, she is aware of her wrongs. You have every right to be angry at her – if you are angry at her.
“I saw you with Jonathan.”
She tilts her head, eyes straying from you. She looks confused.
“What?”
You cross your arms over your chest, the bracelet around your wrist slides down a little.
“I saw you kissing him.”
“So?”
“So?”
Now you feel the anger rushing through you.
Does she not feel ashamed?
You scoff, shaking your head in disbelief.
“I should be the last person to care about this but I still care about him,” you start as you stare into her confused eyes, “what are you doing is disgusting.”
Nancy begins to understand a little but a part of her still leaves her with a big question mark.
“I shouldn’t be defending him but I know that he is a good person, despite everything,” you murmur the last part with an eye roll, “and I know that he is good to you.”
Nancy straightens her back, she pushes the book off of her lap and holds her hands up, “okay, uh I’m a little confused.”
“Oh, you’re confused?” You mumble, trying to keep your voice down, “you’re confused about the fact that you are cheating – openly?”
Technically, you are not wrong. She did cheat but not anymore.
“I’m not cheating,” she mumbles, “we’re not together anymore.”
Silence fills the space between the two of you. The only sound you both hear is the thunder and the rain outside before you speak up after a long pause.
“What?” You ask and Nancy realizes that you don’t know.
How do you not know about the break up?
How do you not know that he left her?
She stands up and crosses her arms over her chest, mimicking your pose.
“Steve broke up with me.”
You are stunned. These news are something you did not expect.
“A few weeks ago, actually,” she explains, “when he came back from you.”
Oh.
He broke up with her, the night before your birthday, after seeing you.
“I’m not cheating on Steve. Jonathan and I, we’re together.”
So, the rumors were true, after all.
They broke up – he broke up with her.
“Oh.”
Nancy looks you up and down. There you stand, wide eyed, confused and definitely unaware of the break up that happened so long ago.
“You didn’t… know?”
You shake your head and you lean your body against the shelf behind you.
“No, I-I didn’t know.”
You had almost forgotten about the raging storm when a bolt of lightning strikes through the sky and the lights in the library flicker for a few seconds.
You draw in a long sharp breath and look down.
Why didn’t he tell you? You wonder.
Nancy asks herself the same thing. Why did Steve not tell you about the break up? Why didn’t he call you the way he called her after he broke up with you?
The two of you stand in front of each other, shocked.
And as Nancy takes a closer look at you, as she sees the slight frown, the look in your eyes, the tension in your shoulders, the hand over your heart. She knows. She knows that there is still something.
You are still processing the news, she can tell by the way your eyes flicker back and forth as though you are trying to piece something together.
“Wait so.. you heard the rumors and you didn’t… think they were true?”
Your hair falls in front of your face when you lift your head, you don’t bother to push it away.
“I– well, I…I saw you two together a lot, so, it was hard to believe the rumors.. you know?”
Nancy nods in understanding.
“I get it… Then, the rumors with Eddie are not true?”
For a moment, you think about her question before you turn your head to look at her with a frown.
“The one I’m pregnant? The one where he sacrificed a lamb to get my undying love and devotion? The one where I cheated on Steve? Which one of them all?”
Nancy’s eyes widen.
She can’t help but snort at all those rumors. Shaking her head with an amused smile, she looks down with furrowed brows, “trust me, even I know Munson looks scary but probably is a fan of Garfield or something,” she chuckles.
A smile tugs at your lips.
“He does have Garfield pajamas.”
She looks at you with a stunned expression before you both burst into giggles.
Nancy shakes her head again as the smile fades away.
“And no, not the pregnant one either.. Jesus,” she sighs. Her eyes find your body again, she looks you up and down with a look that you cannot read.
Suddenly, you feel self conscious again. You feel the urge to wrap your arms around your waist, wanting to hide your body.
But her words aren’t ones that you expected.
“If you’re pregnant with a body like that, is the baby like smushed to the very back?”
Your breath gets caught in your throat. Your eyes widen at her words and you restrain yourself from gasping or holding your hand in front of your mouth or your stomach.
Nancy had spent so much time feeling jealous of you, of what you had – because at one point, she thought that you had everything. Beauty, popularity, friends and a guy who was hopelessly in love with you. You had it all and when she got a taste of what you had, she wanted it. She wanted him. She painted a false picture of you in her head, to make herself feel better about stealing from you.
Though, the false picture in her head didn’t stay for long, it started crumbling the moment she walked into the girls bathroom to hear you crying. She knew it was you, the backpack that laid on the ground had a pin of The Cure on the front, one that only you had.
After that, she began to pay attention to you.
She saw the way you looked at Steve, weeks, months after he left you.
She saw the sadness, the heartbreak, the pain in your eyes and the love that never left.
She saw the way you looked at the other girls and the way you looked at yourself. The way you stayed in the locker room, a little longer than the other girls.
The way you looked at her and compared yourself to her.
All because of him.
“Y-You look amazing is what I’m trying to say,” Nancy says nervously.
A flush creeps up to your face as you gape at her.
To hear it from Steve or even Eddie is one thing, to hear it from a girl who bashed on you, who belittled you is a whole other thing. It feels.. good.
“T-Thank you..”
Nancy clears her throat, suddenly feeling embarrassed. Desperately wanting to kill the awkward tension, she goes back to your previous question.
“No… The one where you and Eddie are dating.”
It takes you a moment to realize what she means. Your mouth falls open and recognition dawns your face.
“No, it’s not true either. None of them are,” you brows knit together, “wait, why did you think it was true?”
There’s amusement in her features as she takes in the sight of your confused face. She shrugs, “you’re always clinging to one another, and you guys literally kiss on the cheek! Like, who does that to a friend? And– you sit on his lap! It’s hard not to think you two have something going on!”
You press your hands together, laughing awkwardly, “uh, well, that’s how best friends interact,” you say these words with a twinge of pain in your chest but you don’t understand it, the reasoning behind the pain is unclear to you.
“Trust me, that’s not how best friends interact with each other – or look at each other,” she adds quietly.
“L-Like what?”
She stares at you in amusement, albeit a little bewildered.
“You’re a little oblivious, aren’t you?”
“Oblivious to what?”
She looks away from you with a small smile, glancing out the window, she pretends to be surprised, “oh, it looks like the storm finally stopped!” She points out.
The storm had indeed stopped, though the one inside of you, has just begun.
Nancy reaches for the book on the nook. She grabs her bag and turns back to you, “I gotta go home. Jonathan and my mom must be worried.”
You follow her with your eyes, staring at her desperately.
She looks over her shoulder after passing by you, “one piece of advice? Pay attention.”
And with that, Nancy Wheeler leaves you standing in the empty aisle.
“What?”

All through public school sex education classes, you were told that if you didn’t experience signs of presenting during a certain time period, you never would. Most people don’t. That was certainly the case for you. Puberty came and went without the slightest hint of a secondary gender.
Even as society around you exists in the midst of a massive fertility crisis, more than 91% of the population is classified as beta. Experts in the field predicted that with the rapidly declining birth rates that we might see a rise in alpha and omega pairings but so far that has not been the case. No viable differences were seen until last year when the number of known alphas increased by a meager .2%.
Still, many beta couples continue to seek assistance with conceiving a child, which is part of the reason why you decided that would be your field of study. Currently a third year med student at a university, whose promising research in the field is making headlines all over the world, you hoped one day to become a fertility consultant. Helping all those who wish to start a family achieve their dream.
Ever since you could remember you’ve wanted to help people. In grade school you helped the new student find their way around. You helped the teacher with everyday classroom tasks. Everywhere you went, if you saw someone in need of a helping hand, you provided. Reaching a box of cereal from the top shelf at the grocery store and placing it with a smile in the elderly man’s basket. Helping a lost little girl in the park, you saw on your morning jog, find her mother. Offering to spend your first weekend off in a month helping your roommate move into her new place. Even though that meant you were now a one income dwelling, who wouldn’t be sustained for long on your meager university coffee house earnings.
After helping her, you arrived back to your suddenly empty two bedroom apartment. The immediate urgency for you to find a replacement roommate became very real, very fast.
The next day you posted fliers all over campus, including the coffee shop, the library, even at the athletic center! You asked your friend Robin to stick some up on the bulletin board at her job as well.
“I actually might know someone,” her eyes flashed quickly from the flier to you, “Someone who could, in theory, move in before next weekend if that's cool with you.”
You practically leaped at her offer, “Absolutely! What’s her name?”
“His name is Eddie and he’s a—“
“Oh,” you’d never had a male roommate before. You considered this new development until glancing at the clock on the wall. You were going to be late for class! While voicing your thoughts about her proposal, you were already headed towards the door, “I guess as long as he’s not a total slob and pays his part of the rent on time that’s all that matters. Give him my number and tell him to call me, I gotta go!”
“Wait! There’s one more thing,” Robin tries to scream after you but you're already running out the front door of the Family Video.
She watches your car pull away and shakes her head as she forwards your contact info, “Oh well, she’ll figure it out on her own pretty quickly.”
Tuesday was always your longest day. First the opening shift with the morning rush of tired college kids desperate for their caffeine fix. Working what felt like nonstop until noon, followed by classes until after 8:00 at night. By the time you trudged your tired ass back to your apartment, all you wanted to do was sleep. Days like today were why you started leaving a pillow and blanket on the couch because sometimes taking those few extra steps to the bedroom were simply out of the question.
Collapsing into the cushions, you felt your eyes get heavy and all your muscles finally relaxed. Sleep would come easy tonight.
Until the buzzing of your phone brought you back from the edge of sleepy bliss. You had a text from an unknown number.
Hey, this is Eddie. Robin’s friend. She said you needed a roommate! That’s such a coincidence because I’m a mate who needs a room.
You couldn’t help the little bud of a smile that grew as you looked at the laughing emoji he added to the end of the text. Is it allowed to make first impressions from a single text? Oh well, your initial impression, he’s a goofball. Playful sort of boy next door, childhood friends in another life maybe. Meeting him in person couldn’t hurt right? Robin wouldn’t have suggested it to you if she didn’t think the two of you would get along.
Hi Eddie, I’m free tomorrow after 5 if you want to stop by and take a look. Try it before you buy it right?
You found yourself holding your phone waiting for his response. Eyes suddenly a little less heavy than before. He didn’t keep you waiting long.
It has four walls, a door, and comes with a sweetheart like you? Consider it sold!
Sweetheart? Sure Robin probably told him you're a nice person and all but that’s a little, buzz. Your thoughts were interrupted as he messaged again.
Sorry, I hope that didn't come across as pushy. I don’t want you to think I’m some stereotype. I try not to act like an entitled jerk all the time. It’s just, Robin showed me a picture of the two of you at the lake last summer and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think you were pretty.
The thought that he knew what you looked like and was still sending you cheeky messages made you happier than you’d like to admit. You remembered that trip and knew exactly what picture she must have shown him. It was one of the few where you actually felt good about yourself. With another yawn, you typed a response.
You could make it up to me by leveling the playing field? I should know who I’m expecting to meet tomorrow and possibly share a place with.
Within just a few minutes an image appeared on the screen. He was straddling a vintage motorcycle with a helmet in his hands. Oh.
You weren’t sure what caught your eye more, his soft looking curly hair, his dark chocolate eyes, or those dimples in his cheeks from the smile he was flashing the camera. He followed the picture up with another message.
Rob told me you were in class all day so I’ll leave you alone since you’re probably tired. Get some sleep. I’ll see you tomorrow around 5 roomie!
You should be annoyed. First he calls you sweetheart. Then he has the nerve to tell you to go to sleep, like you’re a child who was up past their bedtime. Then to top it all off, this man has the audacity to assume that just because you exchanged a few texts that he can move right in? Who does he think he is? You should be annoyed– but you’re not. Quite the opposite actually, you just got a little more excited for tomorrow. You fell asleep on the couch with that spout of a smile still growing slowly on your lips.
Heading home after class the next day felt different. Instead of going home stressing about an exam or worrying about how you are going to pay next month's rent, you feel a touch of nervousness mingling with the excitement for a first meeting. You secretly hoped that Eddie was as cute in person as his picture.
Fate was smiling on you today because class had gotten out a little early giving you just enough time to straighten up the apartment before Eddie arrived.
You hung a clean hand towel up in the bathroom, put fresh sheets on the bed that your old roommate left behind and smiled when you lit the pine scented candle that sat on the coffee table. Happy that you could get one more light out of it before it would need to be replaced. You fluffed the decorative throw pillows on the couch and finally closed the door to your own room before waiting to hear the knock on the door.
When that noise finally echoed through the quiet air you felt your body shiver with anticipation. You let out a reassuring breath, hoping it would calm your nerves and opened the door.
“Hey!” he smiled as brightly as the picture he’d sent you while he greeted you by name, “So? Am I as cute as my picture? Because you certainly are.”
Add big flirt to your first impressions. He was definitely laying on the charm but you were also falling for it hook line and sinker, “Hi Eddie, it’s nice to meet you. Come on in!”
You offered your arm in a welcoming gesture. He stepped inside and brushed past you ever so slightly. He must be wearing a strong cologne. Just that quick pass had your senses overwhelmed with the earthy, woodsy smell.
“So this is the common area,” you pointed out all the usual necessities, “Here’s the bathroom, there’s the kitchen. Off to the side there is a little dining table but I’ll be honest I think I’ve used it once. I usually end up eating on the couch.” He commented on how it was a nice place and that it was so close to his work he could walk when the weather got nice again.
“Where do you work?”
He closed the kitchen cabinet he’d been snooping in and turned to you, “I’m a mechanic over at Murray’s Auto Repair. Rob said you work at the coffee shop on campus, what’s your field of study, young scholar?”
“Medical. I’m studying to be a fertility specialist,” you made small talk with him as you walked over to show him where his room is… would be! Where his room would be, if you think he’d be a good fit, “Here’s the other room. My old roommate said I could keep the bed and the dresser but if you already have those we can donate these since they’re in pretty good shape.”
He nodded, “Nah they look alright to me. I’m currently crashing on a friend's couch so this would be a huge upgrade.” He inspected the door handle, “Does this door not have a lock?”
“No, mine doesn’t lock either. I always figured it was because they are interior doors?” you shrugged and joined him as he inspected the boring metal doorknob, “They make portable locks you could always use.”
“Yeah, those things aren’t very strong though and when I’m in rut I can get pretty–” you cut him off.
“I’m sorry, when you're in what?”
The complete shock in your eyes and slack jaw had him pulling back a bit from you. A dejected huff through his nose, accompanied by a shake of the head told you he wasn’t too pleased with your question, “I thought Rob told you?”
“She didn’t tell me anything besides your name and the fact you were looking for a place,” you swallowed hard. You were in your third year of med school, you knew damn well what a rut was but the problem here was that only alphas experience them so if he… the wheels clicked in your head and you suddenly felt small standing beside him, “You’re an alpha?”
He crossed his arms, “Is that a problem? I wouldn’t want to make you uncomfortable so you just say the word and I’m gone.”
His messages last night suddenly made a little more sense. He didn’t want to come across as a stereotypical hotheaded, asshole alpha. Truthfully though, he had been nothing but respectful so far. He had a steady job and already offered to pay your half of the rent for the first month! He even promised to do half the household chores. Honestly, he seemed like a great candidate for a roommate. Why should his status change any of that?
You shook your head, “No it’s alright.” You rocked on your heels with your hands held behind your back, trying to restore the conversation to its former comfort level, “So, when can you move in?”
His smile reappeared, but he didn’t answer your question. He instead turned and belly flopped onto the bed, you heard a deep sigh escape his mouth, “Shit, can I stay here tonight? I really don’t want to sleep on that couch again.” He turned on his hip and looked at you from the bed, “You know Rob’s friend Steve?” You shook your head, you’d only known Robin since the spring semester and hadn’t met any of her friends yet, “Well Harrington’s a great guy but he’s a family man now and can’t have a lonely alpha crashing on his couch anymore.”
You stood awkwardly in the doorway, unsure if you should intrude on the space he just claimed, “Is Steve also an alpha?”
“Yeah. He and I had been living together for years before he met that sweet Chrissy of his,” he collapsed on his back and stared at the ceiling, “They had a kid, cute little boy, a few months ago and I lost my room.”
“Is Chrissy an omega?” you were mentally taking notes. Before Eddie came waltzing through your door, you’d never gotten the chance to talk to someone with a secondary gender at length before. There were some alphas you knew of in your classes throughout the years, mostly because all of them were loud and obnoxious about it. But none that you ever felt compelled to converse with. If they were cool with it, maybe they could answer some questions for the paper your gender sciences professor just assigned. Having some first hand alpha/omega pairbond experience would be great for your research.
“Nah,” well nevermind, considering the low omega presentation rates you’d have been shocked if that was the case. You could always talk to Eddie about what it’s like to be an unmated alpha. He continued, “Never actually had the pleasure of meeting one. I hear they are crazy sweet though.”
You asked Eddie if he needed to go get anything from Steve’s place tonight, to which he just insisted he’d go tomorrow while you were in class. You had been so anxious for his arrival that you forgot to eat so you offered to cook dinner for him.
“You really don’t have to,” he tried to stop you but then his stomach growled loud enough that it was probably heard from the hallway by a passing neighbor.
You both looked at each other and you tried not to laugh at his embarrassed expression, but it wasn’t working, “So is ramen ok? If you’re going to live with a starving college student you’re going to have to eat like one. Not that you aren’t welcome to bring in your own food or whatever. I can clear a shelf off for you.” With that you got distracted reorganizing the sparse contents of the fridge, “There. We can put shared items in the middle, I’ll put the things I buy on the bottom and you can have the top shelf.”
You opened the door wider with a smile as he admired your work. You decided after dinner you’d do the same thing with the cabinets and clear a space just for him, “Ok now I’ve definitely worked up an appetite,” reaching up into the cupboard you presented him with two options, “Do you want spicy or regular?”
He gave in. Already, barely an hour in the apartment, and he knew he was no match for you, “Spicy. Thanks, sweetheart.”
You turned on whatever movie was already in the machine while you cooked and then just a few minutes later you were placing a simple bowl of noodles in front of him. He inhaled them, “That was delicious. I’m doing the dishes!” you were about to protest, “No, don’t even try to argue with me. You've already done enough and I’ve only lived here about 2 hours! I can’t have you doing everything for me. I need to pull my weight.”
“Fine, but sit down and finish the movie first.”
He sat on the opposite end of the couch from you. You chose to ignore the little tug that wished he sat closer to you.
“Is that candle what I’m smelling?” he asked abruptly.
“Probably,” you leaned towards the coffee table and read him the label, “Evergreen Forest?”
His brows furrow, “No, this is sweeter.” He laughed, “When I first stepped in here I thought you were baking cookies, it was so sweet. I still haven’t been able to figure out where it's coming from.”
“Maybe one of the neighbors is baking something?” You weren’t really sure how to respond because you also had no idea what he could be smelling. You weren’t one for perfume and none of your soaps, shampoos, or body wash smelled sweet. At least he didn’t say the apartment smelled bad.
“Sorry, I’m being weird,” he brought you out of your daydream, “Alpha nose,” he poked himself in the tip of his nose, “I’m really sensitive to scent.”
“It’s ok! I find secondary genders fascinating. It’s part of the reason I chose to study fertility.”
He laughed and twisted himself to face you more from his spot on the couch, “Ah, I see. That’s why you let me move in so fast. Using my body for science hm?”
You couldn’t tell if he was joking or not so you deflated a little, “No of course not. I just think the phenomenon is interesting. Growing up I always hoped one day I would present, especially after I was told I can’t have kids.”
His laughing faded. The familiar sad, almost pitying look appeared that everyone gives you when you tell them. You’re not shy about it and you don’t care who knows. Despite having been focused entirely on building your career since you turned 18 and got that news, you do get asked by outsiders quite often when you’re going to settle down and have kids.
Here comes the inevitable follow up question. He asks you if you want kids, “I’d love to start a family someday.” You shrug and anxiously rub your knees, “I’m painfully single though, so, one step at a time I guess.”
His laughter was quickly becoming your favorite sound in the world, “Me too! Do you mind if I ask how old you are?”
“I’m 26,” you smiled, “What about you?”
“27. I presented when I was 17 and after I finally managed to graduate high school I went to a trade school to become a mechanic.” He laughed again to himself, “Not that I needed any of it. Already learned all there was to learn from my uncle.”
The title screen of the movie playing in the background and the thought of your 6 AM shift were shoved aside as you spent hours talking with him on the couch. You learned where he grew up, that he played in a band for fun with his friends, and that he was a giant nerd. Everything from Dungeons and Dragons, to Lord of the Rings, to Star Wars. He loved all of it.
You told him about your hobbies outside of school as well. He asked you questions about what kind of music you like, what your favorite color is, and listened to you talk about the things that interested you. It was kind of alarming how comfortable you already felt with him. He was incredibly easy to talk to. Finally, your body knew you’d regret staying up any later than you already had. You yawned.
“Alright pretty girl I’ve bothered you long enough. Go get some sleep,” he raised an arm and rubbed the back of his neck, “Are you sure it’s ok if I stay here tonight? I know it’s short notice and I wouldn’t want you to feel like you had to let me stay. I can move in officially this weekend if that works better.”
You surrendered. Standing right up and following his order, “It’s fine Eddie. I offered you the room didn’t I? Besides,” you yawned again, “Since you’re covering rent next month you might as well get your money's worth. Although I don’t have any extra blankets,” another yawn became the final nail in your coffin, “All I had was that sheet. I might have some pillows in the linen closet,” you went to check but he stopped you with his words.
“You’re too kind, fair maiden. I don’t need much when I sleep anyways,” he gestured to himself, “Alpha’s usually run pretty hot.” You snorted and shook your head. As different as he is, you can definitely tell he’s still an alpha. He rose from the couch with a deep bow, “I look forward to our adventures together as roommates,” he flicked his hair back up and flashed you a great view of those dimples, “Good night sweetheart.”
Eddie moved in his stuff little by little, the whole process took nearly a week. When you returned home each day you would notice a few new additions here and there. He stuck his shampoo in the bathroom, there was a six pack of beer on his shelf in the refrigerator, and you could typically hear music playing from his room at night. Finally the last item, a second guitar amp, landed in his now fully lived in room.
It had officially been a week since he moved the last of his stuff in and the two of you fell into a routine. Eddie’s shifts at the shop were usually the same time you were in class. If he got home before you and made some food, he left you a container on your shelf in the fridge. The last few times he’d started leaving a note on the container labeled “Roomie!” a little heart with bat wings drawn with markers that he definitely swiped from your backpack.  Tonight you were getting home first and decided to surprise him for being the world's best roommate.
Your mind thought back to yesterday as you got started. You had just gotten out of the shower when he mentioned that sweet smell again. You figured he might have a sweet tooth so you decided to make cookies for him.
You tied your hair back and put on the apron you’d found on clearance after Valentine’s Day. It was pink with little conversation hearts scattered everywhere. A picture of a ladybug and the caption Love Bug written across the chest. After completing the scene with some of your favorite music playing softly in the background, you started to work.
After grabbing the flour and sugar, your cheeks felt warm. You had to check the clock to confirm, you’d only been working for a few minutes and you already felt flushed. As though you had been working in the summer heat for hours. You opened the small window that was situated beside your dining table and the cold winter air wafted into the warm kitchen.  It helped a bit.
Setting the heat in your cheeks aside, you forgot about it after a while. You didn’t even realize how focused on your task you’d become. You felt relaxed. Every care of the outside world was gone. After mixing the last ingredient, the chocolate chips, into the dough and scooping them onto the baking sheet, you put them in the oven.
“Hm,” you mused to yourself while looking through the cabinet. Wondering if you had the ingredients to make an icing to write #1 roomie on one of the cookies.
Your mission was successful and while the cookies baked you whipped up a small amount. Giving you just enough time to do the dishes before pulling the cookies out to cool. You checked the time again. It was just after 5:00 and you knew Eddie would be back soon. Scooping the icing into a small ziplock baggie, you tried your best to write on the uneven surface. He walked in just after you finished the last letter.
“Hi Eddie!” You smiled brightly, proud of your work. Then you held out a small plate to him with the cookie, “I made this for you!”
He froze. His body went rigid there in the door frame. For the first time since you met, there was an uncomfortable silence. He just stared at you for a moment. Then, without a word, walked over, grabbed the plate from your hand and went into his room. Leaving you standing there in the kitchen dazed, confused, and if you were honest with yourself, a little sad.
You didn’t see him again that night. He stayed in his room. Replaying that event in your mind you cleaned up, left the rest of the cookies in a tupperware container on the counter, and headed to bed.
You tried to sleep but the more you pondered, your sadness turned to annoyance. You needed to complain about him so you called Robin.
“Hey! What’s up?” she sounded cheerful, “Isn’t it way past your bedtime?”
You offered a curt pity laugh, “Haha, very funny. Can I ask you something?”
“Sure, I’m assuming based on your tone there’s trouble in roommate heaven?” She nailed it and your frustrations poured out like a waterfall.
“I made him cookies and he acted like I committed a crime. He gave me this look, didn’t say anything, snatched the cookie I offered him, and has been hiding in his room ever since. Is he allergic to chocolate? He might as well be with how upset he looked,” you mocked his non existence words, “Oh, I can’t believe the nerve of this girl, making me cookies, letting me move in with her on such short notice! Alpha Jerk.”
Once your rant was over she hummed, “Eddie’s always had a sweet tooth, that doesn’t make any sense. I need more details. What were you wearing?”
“Just my normal clothes I wore to class today. I did have an apron on to keep my shirt clean, but why should any of that matter?”
She laughed, “Sounds to me like you might’ve broken him. Let me guess you went full domestic goddess?”
“Well I wouldn’t describe it like that but—“
She interrupted you, “Eddie’s a simple alpha babe. An alpha who, by the way, has never been with an omega. You cooking things just for him? Classic omega behavior, you should know that Ms. Smarty-Science-Pants. On top of that, looking like absolute wife material probably had his brain sizzling like a piece of bacon.”
You listened to her but it didn’t matter, “I’m not an omega though.” Your words were more sad than you’d like to think about.
You could hear her exasperated sigh, “His brain doesn’t know that. I’m telling you that’s all it was. He’s probably hiding because he’s got a huge hard on!”
“Robin!” You yelled and immediately listened for any signs that he might’ve heard your yell. You tiptoed to the door and listened. Nothing. You waited until back in the safety of your bed before talking again, “I’ll admit, you might be right about the first part. But,” you heart sank a little, “I doubt he’s in there with a hard on. There’s no way he feels that way about me.”
“Why not?” Robin combated, “You’re fucking adorable! And If he doesn’t, he’s clearly not using those heightened alpha senses of his because anyone would be lucky to have you.”
You bloomed again, “Thanks Robin. I feel a little better. I’m gonna get some sleep. I’ll see you later.”
The next morning you went about your normal routine. If you hadn’t decided to grab some rations from the kitchen to stuff in your backpack in perpetration for a day full of learning, you’d have missed it. There on the counter where you left the container, now a lot more empty than before, sat a little note. Thanks sweetheart. He left his signature bat heart. You smiled to yourself and flashed your eyes to his door. As if it could’ve been anyone else who wrote the note for you.
A few days after the cookie incident, you and Eddie had resumed your normal interactions. Although, you hadn’t really stopped thinking about what Robin said. You were on the couch watching some random show on TV when he came in from work.
“Hey,” he sounded tired.
“Hey,” you checked the time, “Thought you got off at 5? I was surprised when I beat you home.”
He went, as he always does, to the bathroom and washed his hands. But this time he made a pit stop to set a small sparkly red bag on the coffee table in front of you, “I was supposed to, had to stay and finish fixing this stupid truck. Damn thing is just going to need to be fixed again in three months anyways.” He stood in the bathroom doorway and looked between you and the bag, “That’s for you.”
You felt the color appear on your face, “Me? Why?”
He replaced the towel he’d been wiping his hands on and walked back to the living room, “Dunno, I felt bad I guess about the other day and when I stopped at the store on my way home I saw that little guy and thought of you.” He spoke in a rushed manner like he was trying to get the words out without making a big deal out of it.
You looked inside the bag and found a small brown teddy bear with a red bow tied around its neck. It was so sweet. You held him in your hands and felt the softness of his fur beneath your fingers.
“I just wanted to say sorry. Not trying to you know, I don’t know. You can just throw it away when I’m not looking or whatever,” Eddie was rambling and it was absolutely adorable.
“No it’s fine. I like him,” you loved him. He was the same color as Eddie’s eyes.
He went to his room after that and must have gone right to sleep because you saw the light from under the door turn off and didn’t hear any music tonight. You sat there on the couch with your new friend for a bit longer and realized something. He only came in with this. If he just happened to see this while already at the store, what did he go to the store for in the first place?
It was one of your rare days off and you were catching up on some laundry. You knew he might view what you were about to ask similarly to the cookies but hey doing laundry in an apartment building is a pain in the ass. If you're going down you might as well bring some of his clothes too.
You texted him. Hey, I'm doing some laundry. You need anything washed?
He was at work but usually responded pretty quickly if they weren’t busy. They must not be busy.
Yeah uh sure. That’s cool. Thanks. There’s a little pile in the corner by my guitar.
You were usually really good about respecting the roommate code. You knocked if you needed to get his attention but hadn’t actually been in the second bedroom since he moved in. Only catching quick glimpses when he would enter or exit.
As soon as you entered, you thought to yourself, My period must be coming. The wall of musky, woodsy scent hit you like a ton of bricks. It was spicy and warm and distinctively Eddie. You stood in the door frame almost trying to catch your breath, Damn it’s probably going to be a rough one, I'm not usually this sensitive.
Once you regained your balance, you learned that Eddie had not one but two guitars. There was a red and black electric one hanging on the wall and a black acoustic one sitting on a stand beside his dresser. He didn’t specify in his message which one you should look by and both of them had piles of wadded up clothing near them.
Trying not to inhale too deeply for fear of passing out, you pulled the collar of your shirt up over your nose and grabbed the first pile under the electric guitar. A few shirts and what looked to be pants that he might wear under his coveralls at work.
With still a little room in your basket, you made your way to the second pile. Opting to just pick all of it up at once and drop it in with the other clothes. You instantly knew this probably wasn’t the one he wanted you to wash. Sitting on top of your now shared laundry were several pairs of crusty looking socks and balled up boxers that had been hiding under a shirt.
You knew you should put them back. Recreate the scene and walk away like you never touched them in the first place. Maybe he wouldn’t notice you had disturbed them. That's what you should do. You knew that. But something stirred inside you. You acted almost on instinct and before you could think too hard about it, you were picking up a pair of his green plaid boxer shorts and bringing them up to your nose.
When you inhaled the scent quite literally knocked you down. You fell backwards onto your ass. A euphoric feeling consumed you, it was like nothing you’d ever felt before. Suddenly your cheeks were flushed, your heartbeat quickened, and you knew you needed more. You smelled them again.
The room smelled like Eddie of course, it was his room. All his belongings were in here. He spent a good portion of his time here. But this, this was more somehow. More Eddie. Like someone had taken his scent and bottled it into a cologne. Then accidentally spilled an entire bottle onto this single pair of underwear.
Coming down from your high you knew you had to leave them here, he’d notice if the pile was completely missing. Thus knowing you touched his underwear like a weird pervert. But he might not notice one pair mysteriously going missing.
With the green pair still clutched in your dirty fingers, you replaced each soiled item one by one and covered them back up with the shirt. Then stood back on your feet, picked up the laundry basket, and continued your task as though the last few minutes didn’t happen.
He came home from work that night to a small pile of neatly folded shirts and pants placed carefully on his bed. There was also a small container of take out with his name on it waiting for him in the fridge. You didn’t have the courage to face him that night after what you had done. So you hid away in your room. Leaving him completely unaware of the thievery that had taken place or the hidden treasure that now sat tucked away in your nightstand.
It was officially one month that you’d been living with Eddie. If he noticed something missing from his wardrobe, he never mentioned it.
Tonight you were having your first movie night with friends that you hoped to make a weekly occurrence. Robin was already here and tonight you got to meet their mutual friend Steve for the first time when he came over with his partner Chrissy.
“I poured the popcorn into a few different bowls since it didn’t fit in just one,” Robin said with a smile as she held up two mismatched things of popcorn.
You feigned despair, “Oh no! What’re we gonna do? We can’t let people know that we live like this!” You turned to Eddie and held your cheeks, “What will the neighbors think?”
He laughed, “Your reputation as a good neighbor was probably lost the moment I moved in sweetheart.” His nickname for you became common tongue. You knew it didn’t hold any meaning, just Eddie being, well Eddie.
Robin didn’t approve of your shenanigans, she set the bowls down on the coffee table, “I never should have introduced you two. You're both menaces.”
“Au contraire!” Eddie defended, “It’s actually a crime that you didn’t introduce us sooner!”
Your heart swelled hearing that, “Aww, you really do care Eddie. Here I was thinking you just used me for my extra room. Is the big bad alpha going soft?
He smirked, “Nothing soft about me sweetheart.”
“Oh my god can you not make dick jokes for like 5 minutes please?” Robin threw up her hands, “Are we really about to bring another thick headed alpha in here? Seriously, how did you and Steve not kill each other?”
Your eyes tracked between them as they bickered. Eddie sat in his usual spot on the couch and Robin was about two seconds away from walking back into the kitchen.
Eddie laughed, “Relax! Steve and I have more sense than that. Besides, he’s got a girlfriend which calmed him down a little.”
“Good, this apartment can only handle one hot alpha,” You blurted out without thinking and instantly regretted it.
Robin, who was no secret to your massive crush on your friend and roommate, covered her laugh and retreated back to the kitchen. Shooting you a look that says you are so on your own with this one.
Eddie just looked at you, for a brief second there was some unreadable emotion there but it quickly turned to a smug grin. His arm swinging over the back of the couch, opening his legs as he crossed one over the other. “Aww you really think I’m hot sweetheart?”
You didn’t answer him. You’d be forever grateful to whoever just knocked on the door.
On the other side stood a man with fluffy, perfectly placed brown hair and a big smile. Even without the knowledge this man was an alpha, you’d know right away. From the protective arm around this girlfriend’s shoulders and the oozing confidence, this must be none other than Steve Harrington.
Which meant the cute redhead beside him must be Chrissy. She greeted you with a surprise, though not unwelcome, hug, “It’s so great to finally meet you. Eddie’s told us so much about you.”
“Really?” You looked back to Eddie who was uncharacteristically quiet. You decided to just file that in the back of your mind for now, “Come on in! We made popcorn and pizza should be here soon.” Robin had returned and gave Steve a hug. You couldn’t resist the urge to tease her once more, “I hope you don’t mind the mismatched bowls.”
The movie provided an anchor as you got better acquainted with these new friends. You learned that they met through work. Steve is a personal trainer and Chrissy teaches yoga at the community center. Steve was telling you the story of how his jaw literally dropped when Chrissy walked into his gym to inquire about offering classes there.
Your body language had naturally leaned in while listening to his story. You sat up a little straighter. Your arms braced against your knees as you gave Steve your full attention. Or at least tried to. The frequent twitches you caught from the corner of your eye kept distracting you. Finally you looked over and saw Eddie clenching his fists against his thighs.
You waited until Steve had finished to say something, “Eddie? Are you ok?”
His eyes were blown wide as he looked in your direction, “Hm? Yeah, I’m fine.” The white knuckles now braced against his chin and the point of his elbow digging into his leg said otherwise.
Steve spoke up before you could, “You sure man? You look like you’re ready to rip somebody’s head off.”
“I said I'm fine!” He snapped.
In an instant, the once friendly atmosphere turned sour and tense. No one really knew what to do. Everyone looked concerned. Searching for the cause of what had upset him. You however were feeling something very different. All you could think about was touching him. No, not touching, your brain supplied. Scenting.
You wanted nothing more right now than to nuzzle into his hair and neck. Somehow reassuring him that everything was ok.
Now your eyes were blown wide. Your brain all at once processed this intrusive thought. You knew it was nonsense. It must have come from your lessons during class today. Yeah that’s it. You were still just thinking about today's lecture during gender sciences because you shouldn’t be scenting. That’s something only done by alphas or—
“Who wants dessert?” You jumped up from the couch and headed into the kitchen. You heard footsteps behind you. Someone was following you. You didn’t need to turn and look thought. The sound of the footsteps, his smell, everything about him swirling around inside your very confused mind.
You opened the freezer and didn’t realize how much you needed the relief of a cool breeze. Standing there with the door open for a moment after grabbing the tub of ice cream felt incredible.
“Hey,” Eddie’s voice melted your insides. It sounded so soft and comforting, “Are you alright?”
You didn’t want to look at him for fear that just by making eye contact he would somehow know what you had wanted to do. Instead, you chuckled awkwardly and played it off, “Guess I’m just more tired than I thought.”
“No,” Eddie saw right through you, “I’ve seen you tired after a long day. That’s not what this is. Come here.”
Your mind and body were incapable of disobeying him. Even if you hadn’t wanted to, you turned on his command. Closing the freezer door and keeping your eyes locked with his feet.
He touched your forehead. Eddie had never touched you before. All the nights you spent wondering what the tips of his fingers felt like finally answered. They were calloused from playing guitar, the palm of his hand rough, most likely from his job. But nothing had ever felt more natural. It was fleeting thought because he pulled back already.
“Jesus Christ you’re burning up,” He went to the bathroom and returned the thermometer, “Holy shit 102?” He called for Robin.
She came running and you vaguely heard him telling her to go get medicine from the bathroom. He lifted your chin, “You are taking medicine and going right to bed. Do you understand me? No work or class tomorrow for you either.”
“But–”
“I think you should listen to him,” Robin said as she returned followed by Chrissy and Steve to check on you.
Standing became a labor. You braced yourself against the counter but Eddie caught you and lifted you into his arms. Robin opened the door for him as he carried you to your bed. Everything was starting to blur together. Somehow they made you take the medicine. You’re pretty sure Robin helped you change into some pajamas before you passed out on top of the comforter. That night you had your first dream of Eddie.
The next morning… afternoon? You weren’t sure until you blinked your eyes open. You felt awful. Your skin felt like it was on fire. If you were still running a fever that was not a sign. As soon as you summoned enough strength you ripped all your clothes off only to be horrified by what you felt on the bed beneath you. Your underwear, shorts and the top of the comforter were soaked. You brought your wet hand up to your face to inspect the source.
“Is that?” you spoke to the emptiness, “Slick?”
It should have been impossible. Everything you knew about biology was being thrown out the window and discarded to the wayside. Nothing made sense anymore. You had been and would always be a beta. And yet– your new and now ever present instincts told you otherwise. You were in heat.
Grasping at the shred of rationality that you regained, you tried to remember everything you’ve ever learned about heats. You knew a few things for certain. One, it was only a matter of time because you were lost to your desires and unable to think about anything except mating. Two, you needed food so that you didn’t have to leave your room again until it subsided. Last? Only omegas experience heats which means that only an alpha would truly make you feel better.
Tossing your wet clothing to the ground you wobbled naked like a newborn fawn towards your bedroom door. Dripping slick against your bare inner thighs as you tried to walk. You made it to the kitchen where, with fervent desperation, you dug through the cabinets for anything you could bring back with you. Then you went to Eddie’s room and without a second of hesitation opened the door. That was a horrible idea.
Where only the night before was just the scent of Eddie, now your brain was able to recognize it for what it was. Alpha.
Your knees buckled. It’s a miracle you didn’t fall over. Another rush of slick dripped from your aching hole. You didn’t have the luxury of considering whether he’d be upset that you were borrowing his clothes. You grabbed his leather jacket that he always wore outside of work from the bed and the few shirts that littered the floor. You could feel the fever returning. You needed to get back to your room.
Eddie didn’t want to leave you that morning. He peeked inside your bedroom before heading to work and you were sound asleep.
Robin had taken care of your obligations for you. She called your work and emailed your professors saying you’d be out for a few days with a fever.
Eddie knew he should just go back home because he wasn’t much use here today anyways. He’d already made a ton of mistakes thanks to his distracted brain.
“Munson!” Murray called to him from the office, “Come here boy!”
“Shit,” he tossed the rag in his hand and readied himself for an ass chewing.
Murray looked up from the desk, “What’s wrong with you today? You handed me an order form for the wrong part. You charged someone triple for a simple oil change and now I just watched you checking the engine on a car that was brought in for headlight repair.”
“Sorry sir, my roommate’s pretty sick right now and I guess I’m just a little worried about her,” a little worried was an understatement. Eddie was panicking that you, the absolute divine love and light of his life, were going to die in his absence.
He sighed, “Just go. Before I change my mind.”
Eddie tore at the buttons on his coveralls and nearly tripped trying to walk and take them off at the same time, “Thanks Murray!”
“You owe me!” was the last thing Eddie heard before he ran out.
He kicked the stand up on his motorcycle and got quite a few stares from people on the street and he hauled ass back to the apartment.
Normally he’d take the elevator up to your fourth floor apartment but in his mind his feet were faster and they’d carry him to you sooner. He was so focused on checking that you were still ok that he didn’t even feel winded after running up four flights of stairs.
He fumbled with his keys as he walked down the hallway. Then it hit him. He dropped the keys. They clattered loudly to his feet. He was still several doors down from yours and he could already smell it. He scrambled to pick them up and ran down the hallway.
His suspicions were confirmed as soon as he turned the key. That same sweetness that had greeted him everyday since the first time he opened that door to your smiling face, suffocated him. Though now it was a little different. It was sweeter. More you. Something he’d only ever dreamed of. An omega.
It got stronger with every step he took towards your room. He swallowed and failed to will away the hardness growing in his pants. All his hopes and dreams were answered when he pushed his way into your room. There on the bed in a very haphazardly constructed nest, naked, clinging to his jacket, surrounded by his clothes, and your brown stuffed bear, was you.
He inhaled deeply and could practically feel his pupils dilate with lust. You smelled so fucking good. He took another step and spoke quietly trying not to startle you, “Hey sweetheart.”
It hurt so bad. The ache between your thighs only worsened as you curled into the small nest you’d surrounded yourself with. The underwear you’d stolen from Eddie lost its scent long ago but you still pulled it out and threw it in the pile. The few items you were able to grab from his room were a mere wooden board in the dam against the rushing river that threatened to drown you at any moment.
You didn’t hear the front door open.
Your senses became more clouded with each passing minute. You clung for dear life to Eddie’s leather jacket but it betrayed you as it started to cling back now that it was damp with your sweat.
The click of your bedroom door knob alerted you and brought you back. Maybe it wasn’t the door. Maybe it was the smell or the sound of his voice as he spoke to you. You lifted your head and couldn’t stop the tears when you saw Eddie standing there at the foot of your bed.
“A-alpha? It hurts,”
Something awoke within Eddie. The deepest part of himself he’d never been able to fully satisfy. All those ruts spent uselessly humping into his hand or a pillow. “Again,” He growled, “Say it again little one!”
Your eyes pleaded with him as you whined, “A-alpha?” You pressed the jacked to your chest. How was he here? He was supposed to be working. Your fever must have taken over you and you were starting to hallucinate, “F-fuck, alpha, need you. Are you really here?”
The bed shifted, “I know, I know. I’m here now, sweet omega. I’m here.” He laid behind you and wrapped his long arms around you. “‘m so sorry I left sweetheart. I’m not going anywhere now.”
His presence eased the ache a bit. He rubbed your neck with his hand and whispered in your ear, “You smell so good, could smell you from the hallway.”
He felt you shudder with panic, “R-really?”
“Shh! No, don't worry. I locked the door and only other alphas or omegas would be able to smell it,” he leaned in closer, “Can I kiss you? It might help you feel better.”
You nodded but didn’t feel anything on your lips. He kissed your neck. Sparks of pure pleasure shot through your body. You whimpered helpless against the feeling, “Fuck more Eddie! More! Kiss me more, please!”
He couldn’t deny that his heart had wanted to hear those words since he first laid eyes on you but he knew it was just the heat talking. He also knew if he started he wouldn’t be able to stop, “I want to more than you know princess but, I don’t want you to hate me when you're more lucid.”
His kiss had breathed new life into you and gave you the energy to turn to face him, “I’d never hate you Eddie.” You reached into the piled up fabric that you had built up around you and pulled out the green plaid boxers, “D’you lose something?” you could feel your speech slurring.
“D-did you take my underwear?” his fingers curled and tickled against you lightly drawing out little giggles.
You grinned up at him with glassy eyes, “Sure did. Sniffed ‘em too.”
His palm came to rest on your hip and he ran his fingers up the curve of your waist. Then back down again. Savoring every dip, ridge, and shape your body created as it lay before him, “Did they help you feel better?”
“Nuh uh,” he was misunderstanding, “I took these a while ago. So see? Wouldn’t hate you. Want you.”
He kissed you again, on the lips this time, “I want you too. Shit, you taste so good. I wonder how you taste other places.”
He pressed his elbow up, giving him leverage to sit up and tear his shirt off. Next he was up hovering over you on his knees. You watched him, taking in every single one of his movements. He unzipped his pants and slid them down his hips. His thick length was barely contained by the fabric of his boxers. He was less than graceful as he shook them off.
He straddled your legs and lowered himself towards your neck again, so close to your skin that his chest grazed your exposed nipples as he turned you to rest on your back beneath him. His mouth was in your ear whispering, “I can see it in your eyes sweetheart, the heat is getting worse. Can you tell me what you need before that smart ass brain of yours is just mush, begging for my knot?”
“F-fuck me Eddie,” you looked up at him and knew even in your current state that your words had affected him. “P-please.”
“That’s all I needed to hear sweetheart,” he kissed you again. First on the lips. Devouring your moans, wet noises growing as you felt yourself drooling into him because of how good he tasted. Your slick lips gliding against his. He moved lower onto your neck and kissed the crook just above your shoulder, “This might be a little sensitive here but I promise it’ll feel good.” He sucked on your skin and in that instant you were writhing.
“Ah! A-alpha,” somewhere in the deep recesses of your mind you knew that he was sucking on the spot that both of your latent instincts told you was where he should bite down and bond himself to you. Where if he gave into his desires and bit down just a little harder you’d forever be his and only his. Bearing his mating mark for the world to see. As he continued sucking with just his lips and licking with his tongue that was suddenly all you ever wanted, “Mate me alpha! All yours, please!”
He puffed out his chest. His shoulders flexed. The muscles in his back tightened as he growled again into your neck. Straining to fight off every instinct that told him to give you what you wanted. His hand gripped the wooden frame of your bed so tightly you heard the wood begin to splinter and crack. “Maybe after your heat sweetheart. Such a good girl, my sweet little omega, all these big new feelings. Don’t you worry, I’ll take care of you.”
Throwing your head back you let the dam break, “N-need your knot alpha, Hurts. Make it stop.”
“You’re not quite ready for my knot yet baby. Gotta make sure I don’t hurt you.”
But you were an omega? That’s literally what your body was made for, why couldn’t you take him? First he wouldn’t mate you and now he won’t knot you? Were you a bad omega? He sensed your distress in the subtle change in your scent. He buried his face into your neck again, surrounding you with himself.
“You’re not bad! No no,” you didn’t even realize you’d said that out loud. He continued to soothe you, “It's just…I’ve never knotted anyone before and I don’t want to hurt you.”
You brought your hands up to his chest and touched him everywhere your fingers could reach, “Won’t hurt me. I know. Too gentle.”
You wrapped your arms around his neck and pulled him down on top of you. The weight of his body pressing into nearly every surface of your skin was intoxicating. Grounding you with his scent and his very presence. You’d pulled him into the perfect position to nuzzle into his neck and hair, kissing the same spot that he has just assaulted on you with his tongue. A warm feeling bubbled in your gut. This was different from the warmth of the heat. Then a sound hit both of your ears.
A sound that gave both of you delighted pause. The little noise that escaped your throat was somewhere between a whimper and a moan but something so uniquely omega. Eddie had never heard a more beautiful sound. You were purring.
He let you keep going but whispered into your ear, “You’re fucking perfect you know that?” you purred louder, “I’m going to make you come with my fingers and then I’ll give you my knot, ok?”
“Yes alpha! Thank you,” you whined as he pulled away but his hands never stopped touching you. He made his way down to the drenched area between your thighs.
“You look so beautiful for me sweetheart, you’re fucking soaked,” he moaned as his fingers began toying with your wetness and dipping in between the folds of your pussy. You encouraged him with all the moans and whines he could ever hope to hear. As soon as he deemed you thoroughly worked up, he finally slipped a finger in, quickly followed by another. They worked together pumping in and out fluidly, curling inside you, pressing all the right buttons. You wanted to thank him but all that would come out was broken bits and pieces of alpha and his name.
His hair brushed lightly against your inner thighs, sending shivers through your core as he lowered his head down. He spoke with a low hum right into your entrance, “You’re close. I can feel it. Let go for me sweet omega. I’ll take good care of you.”
One more curl of his fingers hitting that delicious soft spongy spot inside you had you screaming and convulsing as slick rushed out into his hand and surely getting some on his face. His fingers pulled out and were replaced with something wet and soft. You could feel his nose nudging at your aching clit as he licked up all your wetness with his tongue. It slid up from the hole and flicked your clit over and over again causing the muscles in your calf to twitch.
“K-knot alpha! Knot please, ‘m ready. So empty, hurts!”
He sucked on your clit before pulling away and lifted to release his throbbing cock from his boxers. You looked up at it, marveling at how impressive his length looked. The tip swollen and aching for you just as you ached for him. The shaft veins pulsed as he pumped himself with his wet hand, covering it in your scent and juices. The base just barely began to flare out as his knot already started to swell. He lined up the tip with your begging cunt and teased you as much as his self control would allow before slowly and carefully pressing all the way inside.
You cried out for him, “So good! More, more, more! Move alpha please!”
He couldn’t hold back anymore. Feeling his cock sheathed inside his omega’s pussy was too much. He began fucking into you with reckless abandon, each thrust hitting deep within your body, catching ever so slightly as his knot continued to swell. He grunted loudly, “Fuck! “M’gonna fill you up so good little omega. Gonna breed this beautiful pussy,” his instincts were now fully in control. His mind became almost as clouded as yours with nothing but want and desire to fulfill the purpose of your heat, “You’ll look so good knocked up sweetheart. Tits all big and heavy. My omega, mine!”
You echoed him, “Yours alpha! All yours! Breed me, wanna carry your baby! Please, please please,” you cries became so desperate and emotional as you begged and pleaded for him to give you something you’d wanted as long as you could remember. Tears fell from your tired eyes, “Make me a mommy alpha!”
“Yeah?” he looked down at you. Beads of sweat from his constant thrusting formed on his forehead. His bangs curled and swooshed out in every direction, “Beg for my knot again omega, tell me how much you want it!”
Your body was jostling up and down from his thick cock fucking into you harder and harder. Your senses became overwhelmed with the feeling of your alpha’s cock, his scent, his words, his love all around you. You could feel how much bigger his knot had gotten, your voice was wrecked, “Knot alpha, need it, knot me!”
Eddie came with a loud growl. You’d never felt so full. Your walls pulsated around him as you came again. He slammed his knot deep inside you, locking you together with him, forming a connection that as you floated down from your orgasm fully took shape in your mind.
“Eddie?” you looked into his warm brown eyes, “Th-thank–”
“Shh, we can talk later baby. Rest while you can,” he held a finger to your lips, “Once my knot goes down I’ll get you some water and something to eat. You’ll need it again soon so we both need to rest.”
Being locked together with him felt so right but it limited your movement. Twisting your torso you looked around the nest for the box of granola bars you’d grabbed earlier, “I,” words were still hard and your breath was labored, “box here somewhere.”
He looked around and spotted the corner of the box on the floor. He pictured what you must have done when you realized what was happening to you, knowing what you’d need, “You did such a good job. Now it’s my turn, we’ve got a long few days ahead of us. My first rut lasted three days.”
You chuckled, eyes closed, a blissful fucked out smile on your lips, “W-we might need more food.”
“I’m not leaving you again, I’ll have Rob drop some stuff off.”
You didn’t talk anymore after that. In fact you fell asleep with his knot still inside you. He kissed your forehead before pulling out when it finally went down, “Sleep my little omega.” He left the nest just long enough to text Robin and his boss, updating them and then curled up behind you, rubbing his face into your neck again. Picturing how good your throat would look with his mating mark on it before falling asleep beside you.

january fic rec
so i figured that instead of waiting until december to make a big long post of all the fics i read throughout the year, i'd break it down into monthly recs instead. i barely read anything at all last year, and it makes me feel awful every time i think about it, so hopefully this method keeps me on track so i can make some headway on the hoard of fics i have saved.
this also helps to boost fics that might've been missed or overlooked in the chaos and carnage brought by the passage of time.
these will include tumblr fics as well as ao3 fics!
general warning: smut will be included in these so please read at your own discretion and heed any warnings and tags!

“I’m surprised you’re still here,” Steve says as he leans into Eddie’s creeping touch, the little bit of contact more of a tease than anything. “Thought you’d be back at the hotel by now.” Eddie grins up at Steve and tugs him closer. “And miss the chance to congratulate you properly? To show you how proud I am of you?” Steve full on shudders at that, his mouth drops in a soft gasp and his hands push up into Eddie’s hair. “Eddie…” “I am, Stevie. So proud of you, my baby.” He leans in and presses a kiss to Steve’s jersey-covered sternum. “Tell me what you want, princess. Anything, and it’s yours.”

Drenched by a sudden downpour and locked out of the youth hostel they were supposed to be staying at, university students Steve Harrington and Eddie Munson find themselves unwittingly and very much against their will trapped in night-time Rome together, and sharing a cramped hotel room. And a bathtub. Things kind of escalate from there.

In his mind Steve goes over the things he knows. Eddie is a vampire. A vampire who killed another vampire to save Steve’s life. To save Chrissy’s life. Eddie is dying. He may already be dead, but it looks like vampires can die again. Permanently. Eddie wants his blood.

Steve is skeptical, until he comes across the profile of Eddie Munson, a music producer and the hottest guy Steve has ever seen. Maybe this wasn't the worst idea after all…

“Everyone expects a lot from Team USA captain Steve Harrington and his first alternate, Tommy Hagan, but everyone’s a bit shocked at the choice for second alternate. What do you have to say about Eddie Munson being the pick, Jack?” Steve already felt anger bubbling under his skin, the annoyance of the last few weeks finally reaching a boiling point. “Well, we all know he’s one of the best goalies out there, but it’s rare to see a goalie with an A or C. I’ll be honest, I was surprised he was chosen over Gareth Emerson, who showed us three shutouts in the last month at Boston University. Eddie’s been proving himself in the AHL, but I don’t think he’s got what it takes to get the boys to gold. I hope I’m proven wrong, but his careless attitude makes me think he isn’t leading these boys to a victory they want.” The tv in the hotel room snapped off and Steve stood up, pacing the carpeted floors with his fists clenched at his sides and a scowl.

The bow tie around Steve’s neck was choking him. It had to be made for children, but when he’d asked one of the waiters before they went on the floor, he shrugged and said they all were like that. But the lack of oxygen to his brain didn’t excuse the way he nearly dropped a glass of a half-shaken, half-stirred -yes, really- martini when the hottest man he’d ever seen walked up to the bar. He was chatting with a few people, smiling at them like he was truly happy to see them even though he was dressed like someone who was crashing the party. Steve had done a few events like this before and was never disappointed with the eye candy, but this guy was something else. His curls were perfectly maintained, falling just right along his shoulders. Did they say the hair was the curtain to the soul or was he just that enamored?

“Motherfucker,” he hisses, shaking his hand out, because it had hurt, and then he winds up to do it again, to make it hurt more, because at least he’s in control of that much, at least it’s anything but what he’s feeling right now. “That’s a good way to break your hand, y’know,” a voice comes from the doorway, startling Steve into pivoting and aiming his fist at whoever is coming after him now.

first kiss - T, complete @mcdynamite

Kissing has never done all that much for Steve, if he’s honest. It’s just not really something he’s ever given much thought to before - the way someone kisses - despite the fact that he’s locked lips with plenty of people. For him, kissing has always been something nice, but not particularly special. It’s never been earth-shattering. Never taken his breath away, the way people talk about in movies and books. It’s just a way to be closer to someone, and it’s nice, but it’s never anything more than that. Then, Steve kisses Eddie for the first time, and suddenly he gets it.

The two of them continued, kissing quietly. Chrissy wondered how far she could let this go before they realized she was awake. She ached to touch herself, listening to the panting and low moans now coming from the other bed. Fuck it. Chrissy rolled onto her back and Robin and Nancy froze. She looked over at them, Robin on top of Nancy, pinning her hands above her head. The kissing sounds Chrissy had heard were clearly actually Robin working on Nancy’s nipples with her mouth–both of the cups of the negligee had been pulled down leaving breasts exposed. Chrissy sighed. Slowly moving her hand down her body between her legs she said, “You don’t have to stop as long as I don’t have to stop.” Chrissy started circling her clit with her fingers, arching her back. “Are you sure?” Nancy asked, still panting. “Does it look like I’m not sure?” Chrissy said, using her other hand to fling the blankets back, spreading her legs and making sure Robin and Nancy could see where her hand had traveled.

It was all murmurs and unsteady breaths between them, and they barely touched. Outside the door the group laughed suddenly, startling the both of them. Just then they realized how close they were. Just a little step and their bodies would've touched. "Right, okay… " Robin coughed a bit, going slightly backwards. " …do you want to-" She didn’t get to finish that sentence. Chrissy, in full panic of losing the only chance she might have, threw herself at her lips, kissing her. It lasted so little that Robin had no chance to answer it, but it felt like eons. Chrissy opened her eyes, watching at her. Her cold hands on her face, her lips red, slightly parted to show these little teeth Robin thought were so endearing.

The beast stops, gaze narrowing at the pulse pounding in Eddie’s neck, and he quickly slaps a hand over it, trying to limit the temptation of the tasty-blood slash fresh-meat vibe he must be giving off. Robin scowls at Eddie, stepping forward to bury her hand comfortingly into the plush of its furry neck. “Don’t listen to him, Steve. He’s just being a big baby." Eddie has never been a normal type of guy, but he's owned it: he's a gay metalhead in the heart of small-town America and nothing's going to phase him. Nothing except being told that his recent demo-bat injuries might turn him into a shapeshifter like Steve Harrington.

He's just unsuccessful in his mission to woo a lady and get a New Year's kiss." "Really?" Eddie asks, leaning across the counter. "I think I'm coming across as desperate." "Because you are," Robin adds unhelpfully.

Eddie, fucking excited as all hell to meet his Omega finally, opens his envelope to find Steve Harrington's name starring back at him and Eddie just. He just can't. Steve's one of the biggest bitches at Hawkins high. And even if Eddie can, sort of, get past that, Steve's a snob. He lives in a fucking mansion and has a nice car and preppy clothes and yeah...Eddie is going to get rejected stone cold and that would be fair because he doesn't have a single thing to offer and Omega like Harrington. Eddie burns the envelope.

Steve who goes on a Bake Off type show after Robin, Dustin, and Max set him up as a contestant. He doesn't want to, doesn't think baking or cooking should be stressful, but he's been wallowing since his knee surgery took him out of work and basketball, since his divorce. His first day on set, he's totally gobsmacked by the sexy host with all the tattoos and long, curly hair. Just, cannot take his eyes off the guy, blushing and stammering whenever he comes around to do interviews, obviously can't stop starring.

“I think we should break up,” is what Eddie blurts the moment Steve opens the front door to reveal him. Steve’s first reaction is anger -how dare he?- but he doesn’t do anything with that anger. Instead, he takes a deep breath through his nose, crosses his arms, and looks Eddie over. He’s breathing heavily yet his van is parked along the curb. He didn’t run here. His hair, while never tame, looks rougher. He is fidgeting but in a nervous way, not his usual too much energy way. His eyes are wide and scared. It’s the last bit there that drains Steve’s anger. Something’s happened. He drops his arms and says, “well, you’re not dumping me on my porch. Get in here.”

when he gets there he’s met with two guys, freshman surely. letters emblazoned across their cutoff muscle tees and hats turned backwards and perched, very stupidly if eddie shares his piece, atop their heads. they stop him with a hand up and friendly smiles and mock bravado “three actives,” bro number one states. eddie barely holds back an incredulous laugh. “you cannot be serious.”

"Don't call me that." He chances a look over at Eddie, at the risk of appearing as vulnerable as he feels, and to his distress, he can't get a read on the man. His dark eyebrows furrow, brown eyes squinting slightly, and his lips part like he wants to speak. He licks them. Steve's eyes follow the motion unintentionally. "Call you what?" Eddie says on an exhale. "A brat?" Steve shakes his head. "Harrington. Don't like it when you call me that."

Eddie makes a soft noise and blinks down at him. “You should- you should do that.”

And then he gets into Eddie’s studio and like- okay, Steve has always had a type. Older men, men who wore suits, men who worked with his father. Unattainable, already mated. Steve sort of assumes this guy is mated too. He looks like it, has a bite that’s weirdly faded on his neck. But Steve can’t smell an Omega on him. Or a Beta or an Alpha. No one. Somebody to Love
@stcreators event 04: music
Steve/Eddie • rated G • 90s, no upside down, single dad Steve • read on ao3
Eddie loathed the early shift at the record store, but Allan had moved away and the new hire was a college student who had class every morning, so Eddie had begrudgingly agreed when Chrissy had explained the situation.
He was not a morning person. But he figured since the store was usually empty in the morning, he could use the time to write music or work on his D&D campaigns. Then go home and nap.
Everything changed the day the new customer walked in. It was just after nine, and Eddie had had about four sips of coffee when the bell on the door jingled.
“Welcome to Chrissy’s Classics,” he monotoned.
“Mornin’,” the guy mumbled, giving him a nod.
He tried his best not to stare as the man walked aimlessly around the store. He looked younger than Eddie, but had more laugh and worry lines. They suited him. Showed off that he’d expressed himself a lot. He appreciated those things about people. Scars and freckles and callouses and liver spots. Those were the things that made you real, the things that showed you really lived.
The customer’s hair was hidden under a beanie, but his sideburns and the too long tufts on the back of his neck were a gorgeous and intriguing copper color.
They made sudden awkward eye contact when the man looked up and Eddie immediately ducked his head down to his notebook. His closed notebook. He heard a small snicker and he winced. Caught.
Deciding to go for broke, he cleared his throat and looked back up. “You need any help finding anything today, sir?”
The man laughed, grinning over at him. “No, I don’t think. And lose the ‘sir.’ It makes me feel ancient.”
“You’re not ancient,” he argued. If he was ancient then Eddie was already dead.
“Thanks, I’ll take that today,” the man gave him a crooked smile. He held up a record and nodded towards a listening booth. Eddie waved a hand.
That was good. Let’s him off the hook of making small talk. At least until he’d woken up a bit more.
A few minutes later, though, he almost dropped his coffee cup when he heard singing coming from the booth. Not entirely on key, but belting out George Michael without a care in the world, and it brought a smile to Eddie’s face. So new guy assumed the booths were soundproof. They definitely were not.
But over the next couple weeks this became their norm. Usually the first customer of the day, if not the only customer Eddie saw during the morning, Crinkly Eyes would show up, they’d have some pleasant small talk about the weather or a new album release that week, and he’d end up in a booth. Where he’d sing. Usually some pop hit, but sometimes going rogue and choosing The Cure or Van Halen.
While Eddie would pretend like he couldn’t hear. Secretly serenaded while he mapped out his campaigns or doodled. Tried to decide when he’d gather the courage to ask out the hot guy who didn’t know he was putting on a concert for one.
When Chrissy stopped by early to do payroll, she heard him in the booth and raised an eyebrow. Eddie shook his head pointedly at her and she’d just shrugged.
“Whatever, weirdo. Your funeral when he finds out eventually,” she’d scolded quietly as she walked back to the office.
Then on a perfectly ordinary day, Crinkly Eyes walked in with his nails painted. All different colors and what had to be glitter, the sunlight catching on it just right. Eddie couldn’t drag his eyes away, the juxtaposition of the big manly hands and the pretty nails causing his brain to malfunction.
The man blushed so prettily, too. “Oh,” he murmured. “I forgot. Um, my daughter, she- well she only has twenty of her own nails to paint. She was upset that she couldn’t use all the colors.” He raked a hand nervously through his hair.
“Looks nice, very pretty,” Eddie offered with a lopsided grin.
“Hah, thanks,” he stuck his hand out finally and introduced himself. “I’m Steve, by the way. Thanks for letting me come here like every day and annoy you. My kid, she started half day kindergarten around the corner… and I didn’t want to be far, you know, if she needed me? And I can’t stand being home alone anymore. It’s too quiet.” The man, Crinkly Eyes, Steve, realized he was rambling and pulled his lips in between his teeth. Adorably.
“Oh, yeah, of course. It’s pretty boring here in the mornings, anyways. Chrissy would probably be happier if I sold you something, but it’s fine.” He laughed at Steve’s stricken face. “Seriously, it’s cool. At least you’re dusting off the record players for me, right?”
“Yeah,” Steve said a bit awkwardly.
“You should bring your artist daughter in some time. I’d love to meet her.”
“Oh? Y-yeah, that’d be okay?” He seemed to be asking a deeper question.
“I’d like it, or maybe we could do dinner just the two of us first. Before I meet the family.” He winked.
Steve sucked in a breath but recovered quickly. “Yes! I mean, yeah, uh, we could definitely do that.” His eyes crinkled up more as he smiled wide.
It wasn’t until after their dinner that he confessed to listening to him singing every day, and he’d watched mesmerized as Steve turned a brilliant red and stammered at him.
Title from the song Somebody to Love, Steve would’ve been stoked about the George Michael release.

Summary
Rockstar Eddie Munson needs a fake boyfriend after a scandal; enter high end escort Steve Harrington. Unfortunately Eddie's heart didn't get the memo on the 'fake' part of the deal, while the more time he spends with Steve the deeper he falls, the closer he gets to something that looks a whole lot darker than a college student just trying to pay off his student loans. “For you, your highness.” Eddie bent at the waist as he offered the cheap stuffed animal. Steve’s eyes went wide, but he accepted the little stuffed animal, holding it up for inspection. Some of the stitches were visible and his eyes were lopsided, but it didn’t change the way Eddie’s heart stuttered as Steve very gently touched its nose against his own, holding it like it were an actual small creature and not cotton and thread. “What’s his name?” “Bernard,” Steve said with such confidence that Eddie couldn’t help laughing. “What?” Steve said, looking mildly affronted. Eddie grinned. “No, it’s a great name, Bernard the Bat. Berry for short even.” Steve crossed his arms, but with the stuffed animal it looked more like he was hugging it to his chest. “Slushies?” Eddie said before he could do anything stupid.

MEET ME ON THE OTHER SIDE
PART ONE: THE PLAN
“There’s only eight of us here.”
Robin paces back and forth in the small living room of Max Mayfield's trailer. Wildly her hands gesture at the surrounding bodies of kids, teenagers, and young adults offering to do the impossible.
From the doomed silence that follows her observation, the tension is palpable.
Eddie rolls a metal skull ring aimlessly around his index finger, deep in thought. Not about Vecna. Fuck Vecna. Fuck everything he’s done to this town, to Chrissy, to Fred, to Max.
Lastly, fuck everything he's done to him. How much his uncle’s life has been flipped upside-down on the account that Hawkins thinks he’s a satanic murderer. How much he’s slandered Chrissy’s reputation just because she died in his house.
He shouldn’t be thinking about the impulse of calling anyone, much less you.
You don’t deserve to get caught up in his tornado of bullshit, not when you’re busy with your own life two hours away. Thriving in a state college, enjoying friends, being seen. He promised those first few trips at the beginning of your freshman year, happy to still be a part of your life even when it feels hopeless.
The Freak doesn't win the Valedictorian in the end, not in a world where he's repeating his senior year for the third time in a row and — oh right, potential murder charges loom in the horizon.
(Yet two hours in that damn caravan were next to nothing when he saw you beaming from the other end of the parking lot like he held the fucking sun, ready to run.)
He wishes he could run right now.
Run north and never look back, leaving this insanity behind with the town that hates him — except he knows he can’t.
Chrissy Cunningham believed she could trust him. That he was safe, somehow, in this grand scheme of satanic panic.
She believed.
If he’s running anywhere, then it’s to the phone so he can say his proper goodbyes in case all of this goes south — he’s not naive enough to think it won’t.
“I gotta take a piss,” he mumbles out of left field, standing from the sunken middle cushion of the couch. Steve gives him a look — god, can Harrington stop figuring people out before they say anything? — while Dustin shifts from his space on the wall.
All scared.
Everyone’s so fucking scared and Eddie Munson hates that he thinks he’s the most petrified out of them all.
“Right now?” Erica snaps, crossing her arms over her chest.
“What, a man can’t piss in this dire time of need?” Eddie replies with a flippant tone, forced but manageable. Erica rolls her eyes, waving him off.
Access granted from Lady Applejack herself.
Hastily he moves into the hallway, waiting a minute while the team curls closer to the coffee table in the middle of the room with the map of Hawkins in question. Another beat passes.
Instead of touching the bathroom door, his hand grabs the beige wall phone before furiously typing the number he knows by memory.
First ring. Silence.
Second ring. Silence.
Third ri—
The other side picks up.
He drops the unruly curls of his crown against the plywood wall. “Oh, thank fuck.”
“Eddie?”
He clutches both hands against the phone, angling himself away from the company in the living room to focus solely on the way you say his voice.
Melodic, like a hazy, eye-of-the-storm dream in-between a slew of nightmares.
“Hey, yeah, it’s me,” he responds as his eyes flutter closed. “Hey. Holy fuck, I missed your voice.”
“You sound strange,” you murmur on the other end, and he swallows thickly. “Is everything okay?”
. . . . . . .
You remember how terrified he sounded on the phone.
“Things got really fucked up here,” he croaks on the other line, causing you to leap out of your dorm bed with the phone line following.
“How fucked up, Ed?” you ask with a purposeful yank on the mustard-colored jacket hanging up on your wall.
“I don’t even know how to explain it to you without sounding like I’m losing my mind.”
“Try me,” you challenge.
He sighs on the other end, shifting the phone. “Has it been on the news?”
“Has what been on the news?”
“The whole… fuck, the whole Satanic cult shit with Hellfire?”
You pause, standing still in an empty room. “Hellfire? Something happened with Hellfire Club?”
“Chrissy Cunningham’s dead, kiddo,” Eddie supplies. His vocals strain against the syllables of her last name. “I saw it happen, but it wasn’t me. I swear, it wasn’t — Nancy Wheeler saw Fred Benson die, too, and things keeps happening—”
“Hold on.” Your stomach bottoms out as you interrupt in a cautious, small blurt. “You saw it happen?”
Eddie sighs, distorting the other end of the phone line. “I don't really have much time to explain, but yeah. I saw it happen. Something took her, alright? Something demonic, a Vecna’s curse-type shit, and I needed to call you because we’re going after it. I know this sounds insane, because I didn’t want to believe it, but when you’re kinda wanted for murder you don’t really have a choice—”
“You said ‘we’,” you interrupt again, swallowing the lump in your throat. “When you say ‘we’, do you mean the Hellfire Club is—”
“No. Fuck, I mean, kind of? Henderson and Sinclair and his sister are in the living room. And — get this, you’ll have a laugh — your old pal Steve Harrington’s sitting pretty on the couch.“
“Steve?”
Someone you once trusted. Someone you knew, before you high-tailed it out of town for school. From what you remember, he stayed behind to work the local stores after graduation. Not many people ever leave.
(Steve Harrington and Eddie Munson being friendly was never on your Hawkins Bingo card.)
“Yeah. For all the shit I used to give ‘em, he’s one tough son of a bitch. But listen, I gotta go. I just…” Eddie draws in a slow inhale from his nose, exhaling through his mouth. “...I needed to hear your voice again just in case this goes south. Sucks I can’t see you, but this is better than nothing. Thanks for indulging me.”
“Eddie?”
Click.
And just like that, Eddie Munson is gone.
(You refuse to let that be the final say in this conversation.)
Leaving behind your homework and study for a pair of keys and sneakers, you burst from your dorm room and run down the hallway to the stairs, to the student parking lot, and beeline to your car.
Hawkins is a two hour drive.
If you double the speed limit down the interstate highway, then you can make it in half the time.
Nerve endings set ablaze as your mind repeats the bizarre phone conversation like a broken record — demonic happenings killing students, Hellfire Club framed, seeing someone die in a gruesome fashion — but nothing adds up. How the hell did Steve Harrington get involved in all of this? Was Nancy Wheeler a part of the plan, too? Was this a bad trip with Gareth, or was seriously something wrong back home?
Nearly cutting off half a dozen cars to get to the Hawkins exit, it takes flooring two red lights to get to the trailer park where Eddie Munson and his uncle live.
You immediately notice two familiar cars: Steve’s, just on the roadway leading to the park, and Nancy’s, right outside of Max Mayfield's trailer.
The sound of a car screeching to a halt in the grass causes the front door to fly wide open, where two kids peer out with wide eyes.
You vaguely know of Dustin Henderson and Lucas Sinclair from how eager Eddie is to talk about his new Hellfire recruits. The descriptions match, with Lucas’ wide-eye stare and Dustin’s growing, excited smile.
“Eddie!” he screams, stomping his foot several times into the floor. "You gotta get out here, dude!"
The outburst summons several more faces in various states of confusion and height: Max Mayfield, the step-sister of the late Billy Hargrove, shoves Dustin out of the way to get a peek. Robin Buckley, Steve’s Scoops Ahoy co-worker, is the next to stand a foot above the rest.
Nancy Wheeler and Steve Harrington follow suit, both littered with dirt and blood and equally surprised expressions.
You slam the car door shut, exiting the driver’s side door to stare back without any real explanation in mind.
The last to arrive is Eddie, who comically pushes Steve by the shoulder in order to stand on his landing in perfect view of the newcomer in question. Eddie looks like he’s been through hell and back: his Hellfire Club staple raglan shirt is dirtied, hair matted, with dark circles under his eyes like he hadn’t slept in weeks.
Until he sees you, really sees you, and a lifetime of sorrow is lifted from his expression.
He bolts.
Skipping all three stairs to the dirt, he falters in landing but propels straight forward like a linebacker towards you. You take two steps to meet him, but Eddie Munson scoops you high into his arms in a twirl, holding you like he’s afraid you'll disappear like a ghost.
“Holy shit,” he murmurs into your shoulder, his palm cradling the back of your head. “Holy shit, holy shit, please tell me you didn’t—”
“Drive?” you ask breathlessly. “Two hours to get here? More like one. I may be wanted for speeding in two states.”
“Are you insane?” he replies, voice cracking. He sets you down to give you a once-over of disbelief. You hold his face palms on either side to steady the manic shock. “You’re not supposed to be here. It isn’t safe here.”
“You said you were in trouble.”
“Yeah, that doesn’t mean you end up in trouble right along with me.”
You shake your head, leaning your cheek into his palm as he moves to cradle your face close. Forehead to forehead, it feels like it’s the first time he’s taken a breath, a real breath, in maybe days. It’s scary to think so much has happened in your absence.
“You made me an honorary Hellfire Club member, remember?” you remind under your breath, a murmur, to keep it between the two of you. “You don’t get to do whatever this is alone.”
“You have no clue what you’re signing up for,” he warns, closing his eyes at the scent of your perfume. “Please, go home.”
“Munson!”
The sound of Steve Harrington’s voice carries as he drops down the front stairs of the trailer, walking barefoot and worse for wear in the grass. Around his middle is makeshift dressing, broad chest shirtless and speckled with hair.
He’s wearing Eddie’s Dio denim vest.
(What the hell happened to all of them?)
“I’m going to ignore whatever it is I just witnessed, alright, and say we should get inside.” Steve’s hair flops as he regards you with a smile, small and warm. “Hey. Long time no see.”
“Right back at you,” you reply breathlessly. “You look like shit.”
“Feel like shit,” he quips in return. “But, hey, I never made shit look so good.”
You laugh with your own tiny smile. “Glad you’re still the same Steve.”
Eddie finally lets go, gesturing to your car. “Harrington, tell her she shouldn’t be here. Maybe she’ll listen to you.”
Steve makes a face, lips pulling downwards. “Nah, I don’t think she’s ever listened to me, man. Not in school, not in life, not ever.”
“And we need the numbers!”
Robin shuffles out of the trailer, her gangly limbs waving a quick hello. Her vocal fry returns as she sheepishly motions to you.
“I mean, we… are one person down on Dustin and Eddie’s distraction team. Nine people, instead of eight. Three teams of three. It works.”
“Robin’s right,” Nancy confirms with her own subdued, honey-lemon tone. Her arms are crossed over her chest, shirt mangled and torn and matching the fabric around Steve’s torso. Nancy holds up a hand with a mouthed ‘hello’ to you. You mirror the softness of the greeting.
“Okay, but what about Eddie?” Eddie says, rubbing the bangs on his forehead. “Does Eddie get a say about how batshit it would be to bring anyone else into this insane asylum mission?”
“Three is better than two,” Nancy apologetically disagrees. “We don’t have El, we’re running low on time, and she’s willing to at least hear us out.”
You nod once, leaving Eddie’s side to decidedly make your way to the trailer despite the sounds of protests he makes by your car.
“Just fill me in on what’s happening,” you tell them. “I’ll see what I can do.”
The group of seven remaining at the door all turn inward, leaving an air of uncertainty with them.
. . . . . . . .
Vecna’s curse. Clock chimes and nightmares. Demogorgons. Demobats.
The Upside Down.
End of the world type of shit, according to Max. She wasn’t kidding.
You sit between Erica and Lucas as the adults of the group explain the last few years of what Hawkins has had to offer: how the disappearances of several students of the years, and the death of Billy Hargrove, weren’t mere accidents.
Everything was connected.
Everything in this town, this never-ending Hawkins curse, finally began making sense.
To your right, Eddie stands in the corner of the Mayfield living room. He’s white as a sheet and grief stricken when Nancy reaches the part where he comes in: how Chrissy Cunningham died on his very ceiling with her limbs mangled and eyeballs carved from their sockets. How the town blamed Eddie and went on a town-wide manhunt in Chrissy’s name against him.
How he hid in a boat house without a means of escape.
Now it makes sense why you hadn’t heard from him in days.
You finally speak up once the room simmers to silence, the tale coming to a close. “So you… managed to get into the Upside Down and get back to Hawkins?”
“Yes,” Nancy responds. “That’s… where we are in the plan right now. The only way this ends is if we go back in and kill him.”
“You mean Vecna?”
“Yeah,” Steve answers for Nancy, running a hand through his floppy hair. “Kind of our only option at this point so we can make sure Max doesn’t… y’know. Sorry.”
“It’s fine,” the redhead pipes up from the corner, fiddling with her cassette player at her hip. “He means so I don’t become his fourth victim. Everything’s happening in fours, so… makes sense that I’m still marked.“
“But we’re going to figure out how to kill him,” Lucas reassures with soft sincerity.
Steve pushes his index finger into the map where the red ‘X’ covers a drawing of a house. “Nancy, Robin, and I will be going to the house to kill Vecna. Erica and Lucas will stay with Max to ensure the bait plan stays that way.”
He blinks up at you, chewing the inside of his cheek with contemplation.
“Dustin and Eddie are a distraction in the Upside Down.”
“Which is why she’d be safer with one of you,” Eddie finally pipes up as he chews on his ring fingernail, staring intently at the map from a distance.
“I know I’m taking a crash course in Hawkins 101, here,” you start, rubbing your palms gently against the thighs of your denim jeans, “but I feel better if I went with you and Dustin, Ed.”
“And we have extra weapons!” Robin pipes up with forced excitement. “Well — we will have extra. See? Extra hands all around, it’s a great thing.”
“It’s not.” Morose, Eddie shakes his head.
You watch him for a minute, assessing and reassessing the news, before glancing back at Steve.
“Will… fighting this thing clear Eddie’s name?”
“Maybe?” Steve replies honestly. “That’s the goal. Kill Vecna, set things right. It’ll be… it’ll be a tough sell, but we have to try. Only other option is to let Hawkins cave in on itself.”
Max shifts awkwardly against the wall, fixing her headphones strapped around the back of her neck.
“Then I’m in.”
“Hey—”
Eddie removes himself from the corner to protest, but you lock eyes and shake your head.
He stops dead in his tracks, shoulders deflating with each passing breath at your determination.
“You need a third.” You glance around the room. “I’m your third.”
. . . . . . . . .
By the time you all return from the weapons and ammo store, the stolen mobile trailer finds its way parked in the outskirts of the park — not quite where it was hot wired, but close enough to feel familiar.
One by one, everyone files out and into the open field for their preparation stations.
Dustin drags Eddie off to make shields worthy of their campaign before you can ever say a thing. Erica and Lucas do their own thing with spears and leather in hand, while Nancy and Max take a spot to the far east to get to work on the shotgun modifications.
It leaves you with Robin, who already set up a spot at the mobile trailer to make homemade Molotov cocktails.
(Absolutely nothing to worry about.)
You’re in the midst of creating an inventory sheet when a tap on the shoulder surprises you from behind. Steve, still a dirty mess but at least covered by a new long-sleeved shirt and jacket, waggles his eyebrows in your vicinity.
“So… this is weird.”
“What is?” you ask, placing the pencil down on what little surface you had to write.
“Seeing you, of all people, in Hawkins again. You actually managed to get the hell out of here.”
“That was always the plan, Harrington. Wasn’t it yours?”
“Eh,” Steve scoffs, waving a hand. “I got a job at Starcourt… then Starcourt burned down because — well, now you know why — and then I just kinda… stuck around. What’s college like?”
“Peaceful,” you joke, placing your hands on your hips. “When you don’t have a sorority sister as a roommate, it’s very peaceful.”
“So what you’re really saying is: boring. I missed nothing at all. Gotcha.” Steve rocks on the balls of his feet. “Miss Valedictorian of ‘85 herself, in the flesh.”
“Oh, God, stop. Not the Valedictorian thing. It really didn’t make much of a difference, by the way, so studying all the time was for the birds.”
“Uh-huh. Still, I can’t believe you risked a speeding ticket for two hours to get here,” Steve teases, suppressing a smirk. “I didn’t think you knew how to break the law.”
You snort, leaning over to bump your arm with his. “Yeah, well, I don’t have to think to know Eddie would probably do the same for me.”
“Still, it’s ballsy. Where was this version of Vale-’85 when I knew you back in high school?”
“Oh, she was always there, Hair Harrington,” you grin as you watch Dustin follow Eddie’s lead in the field, pounding nails into the back of a metal trash can. “I guess you just do crazy things when you’re—”
Stop.
You freeze before you can finish the sentence, instead squaring your shoulders and trailing silent. Dustin dive bombs into Eddie with a cackling laugh, leading to Eddie hugging the little freshman into his side with adoration.
“Hey, I get it.”
Steve speaks up beside you, forcing you to turn to your left. He glances at you through his peripheral, giving a one-shoulder shrug.
“Trust me, I get it way more than you think.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah. We don’t have to talk about it.”
He swallows a lump in his throat, shifting in his stance to briefly look to his right. Belated you follow where it lands on Max Mayfield and Nancy Wheeler hovering over a crate, sawing off the barrels of shotguns.
I get it.
Maybe he does.
For a while, it’s like this: silent while the rest of the crew prepares their weapons, talking and bantering amongst themselves. Dustin and Eddie play their own version of in-person Dungeons & Dragons in the field, laughing to the sky.
If he hadn’t looked so petrified just a few short hours ago, then maybe you’d forget why you were even here.
(Why any of you are here, in this field, preparing for war you've only learned about hours ago.)
You lean closer to Steve, debating on your next question. “Are the odds good, Harrington?”
Jaw clenched, he rips his eyes from the two girls modifying weapons to look down at you. You press on.
“I mean it honestly: is fighting this Vecna person a pipe dream, or do you guys really believe this is possible?”
Steve waits, kicking a pebble of dirt with his newly-bought boot. “We’re kind of all Hawkins has left. And if I can do something about it? Then I won’t let this son of a bitch take anyone else.”
Your heart skips a beat when Eddie turns from his embrace with Dustin to search — until his eyes land on you. His shoulders drop in relief as his smile remains.
It’s Steve’s turn, now, to lean over in a murmur into your ear so the rest can’t hear.
“I know this isn’t my place, because I was today year’s old when I found out you had a thing for Munson — which, if we come out of this fight in one piece, then we’re gonna talk about that, but… I think if you were going to have any sort of talk? Now might be a good time to do it.”
“Calm before the storm?” you add, returning the smile in Eddie’s direction despite the heaviness of the conversation at the present.
“Something like that.” Steve nudges you with his elbow. “I’ll keep watch on Dustin-o. You just do what you gotta do.”
“And what about you?”
“What about me?”
“Got any speeches you wanna workshop before you dive head-first into some Upside Down hellscape?”
Steve snorts, waving you off. “Oh, way ahead of you. But we’ll get there when we get there. For now? You first.”
You first.
Yeah, there’s a lot here with not enough time to say it.
Once Eddie squints towards you, you jut your chin up and to the left where there are woods. Woods that you’ve frequented with him before in late-night meetings. Trees that have seen things, heard promises — what’s one more?
Eddie pauses, makeshift shield in hand, and tilts his head in response. You jut your chin twice to the left — woods, Munson — before he gets it: lightbulb turned on, he shuffles his shield to Dustin Henderson with a hasty goodbye.
Dustin raises his arms and drops them with disappointment, but you don’t get to see how the conversation plays out when you disappear into the wooded area.
Waiting.
“Harrington bothering you, angel?”
Angel. The nickname could melt your heart.
When you turn, Eddie Munson appears around a tree. Meeting you in the small circle of trees far enough to keep this conversation private, he still looks like the skittish little boy you met the first week of school all those years ago.
His hands are lodged into the back pockets of his denim jeans, eyes curious yet apprehensive. He still has spots of dirt all over his clothes — not nearly as bad as Harrington, yet enough to make you worry.
All this time.
All this time and you didn’t know he’d been in this much trouble.
“You two were talking an awful long time over there,” he adds, tilting his head with an unspoken question: wanna talk about it?
You shake your head. “Just old friends catching up. You… sort of surprised him with the whole PDA-thing outside your house.”
“Well you surprised me. I didn’t really have time to, uh, plot a course of suave action.” Eddie’s smile drops as he takes another step to minimize the distance between you. “You can leave, you know.”
“Ed—”
“Let me fin-ish,” he warns in a sing-song tone. “No one is going to fault you for hearing about a psychotic, telepathic Freddie-demon and wanting to go right back to college. I’d feel better, actually, if you did. Run, I mean. I’ll drive you back to your car right now.”
“There’s no way I’m going back now that I know that there are literally demon bats.”
“Seriously? That’s the first reason I would be high-tailing the hell out of here.”
“You’ve seen one?”
“Chyeah, I’ve seen one. Absolutely… fucking terrifying,” Eddie admits with a breathless laugh. “You got out of Hawkins, sweetheart. Like properly, actually, got to leave and—”
“My home’s still here, Eddie.”
There is a heaviness to your double-meaning confession that takes Eddie a second to recognize, but when he does?
His puppy eyes round in disbelief, taking one small step at a time towards you. Your nose scrunches to avoid the passing emotions from overwhelming you.
“If I had known about anyone calling you a murderer? Eddie, I would have ran home sooner.”
“I didn’t have any way to call—”
“And you’re fucking insane if you think I’m going to abandon you while you’re… gearing up like you’re Rambo to kill these things—”
“Wait.”
“—and there is so much I’ve wanted to tell you since I met you and the fact that I see Nancy Wheeler sawing off the barrel of a shotgun with my own two eyes makes me feel like I really need to set a few things straight, and I need to tell you—”
Eddie crosses towards you in three great strides, before pulling your head in with both hands. He presses a searing, desperate kiss to your lips, effectively dissolving your panic.
Clawing your hands into his hair, you pull him impossibly close. The force of him pushing into you knocks you back, barreling the both of you straight against a tree. Eddie pins you there, teeth grazing your lower lip with a sense of urgency.
“I can’t believe you’re really here,” he breathes against your mouth, left hand dropping to wrap around the base of your neck before diving back in to kiss you.
You rake your nails against his scalp, earning a whimper along your lips. “Wasn’t leaving you.”
“You need to.”
“Eddie, let me say this—”
“No.”
He lets go of your face and neck to place both hands on your shoulders, pinning you to the trunk of the tree. His matted, curly bangs fall forward until his headache presses to yours. Eddie’s eyes squeeze shut in his plea.
“Please don’t say something like we’re at the end of a… terrible fucking action movie where this is a goodbye. This isn't Rambo. I can’t let it be a goodbye, and I won’t run, but I refuse to let this be it.”
His eyes finally open, observing yours. Memorizing yours.
“Look, I’m not a hero. I’m never the hero, okay? I run, I always do—”
“—you’ve never run from me.”
Your interruption falters his shame, allowing the silence to envelop the forest surrounding you.
“Even when we were placed in different classes. Even when things were weird at Snowball. Even when I told you I was leaving Hawkins. Do you know the first thing you said to me when I told you I wasn’t staying in town?”
You allow a pause, but Eddie doesn’t dare speak.
“You said you’d run to me. You’d follow me up to state college. And you did. No one visits me like you do. No one makes the effort like you do. And we could say fuck Hawkins, but what are you doing instead? Fighting for them?”
His fingertips tremble against your shoulders.
“Because it’s the right thing to do,” he mumbles, regretting every word.
“People who run don’t care about the right thing to do, Eddie. Never did. You always try to be polite, to be kind, even when people are kind in return.” You brush wayward strands of hair from his face. “That is brave. That is heroic.”
And for what feels like hours, Eddie stands there, eyes downcast. Processing what you said, what you believe, when so many refuse to see beyond the unruly hair, chains, and metal skulls.
He never feels worthy.
You hate that he never feels worthy.
Eddie sucks in a sharp breath, holding it for a beat, before exhaling his resolve.
“Promise me that when we get back, princess, that you’ll let me tell you everything I’ve ever wanted to say to your face. I need to earn my little bat slayer wings, earn you, and if you confess shit here and now? I may not go.”
He drops a small kiss to your forehead, dragging you in for a tight embrace. You reciprocate, wrapping your arms around his shoulders.
He doesn’t need to earn you. He needs to know he’s never needed to earn you.
“But I’m not holding back, alright?” he murmurs into your hair. “We do the plan, I shred, we get the hell out of there, and I just… Fuck, I’ll tell you whatever you want, just not before we go back up there. Deal?”
You want to protest, but he presses his lips back to yours. Gentle this time, like he’s found his footing back on solid ground. You want to tell get everything off your chest before the final clock bell chimes, but it’s his only request.
(Let me earn you.)
After this is over, he’ll learn it was always the opposite way around.
You nod into the kiss, pulling away to reply.
“Deal.”

Terrible early 2000s stoner comedy AU called Weed College (a very dubious pun on Reed College in Portland, Oregon, where the story isn’t even set, probably). Details:
Argyle is a gentle soul who owns a head shop on the main drag of a college town. He lets his friend Eddie play music there sometimes, which proves to be a mistake when Eddie incurs the wrath of conservative Christian frat boy Jason by sabotaging his anti-abortion Christian haunted house on Halloween. Jason and his frat buddies vow to have the head shop closed down.
Jonathan, a stressed-out scholarship student, also works at the shop. He’s worried that his type-A longterm girlfriend Nancy will find out he smokes weed, and also that her douchey ex Steve, also Jason’s frat bro, is trying to persuade her to break up with him. Steve is trying to do this, in fact, and he does so by revealing in front of both of them that Jonathan smokes weed. Nancy is not impressed by this maneuver. She’s like, “Jonathan…I also smoke weed” and takes out a BIG JOINT. They embrace and Steve is moved. “May I try some weed?” he asks, and they say yes. The weed turns him all the way nice and they have a threesome. Also he defects and helps take down the frat.
Robin, a musically and linguistically talented lesbian who just started at college, abruptly goes from lonely closeted girl to (excuse my language) total pussy magnet. Her fun and flirty energy wreaks havoc on Jason’s frat’s sister house, because every girl gradually either wants to sleep with her or hang out with her or at least dress like her. She is literally just trying to study for her Russian final for most of the movie but life keeps happening.
Eddie finds out that Chrissy, Jason’s sweet girlfriend, is a total weirdo who feels stifled by all the conservative Christianity. They fall in love, which brings Jason’s rage to a fever pitch.
At one point, Argyle’s goth girlfriend Eden’s Mormon family visits, so she had to put on preppy girl drag and he has to disguise the head shop as an off-brand Hallmark Store.

MASTERLIST IN MY PINNED POST!!!!!
“Y/N, hurry!” you heard Nancy Wheeler screaming to get you. You could take your mom’s car to school, but you were too insecure and anxious about start driving. But hey! you were a dedicated student, with college plans, already having a job in a little boutique. It’s not like you were behind your age just because you didn’t know how to drive yet.
One last look in the mirror; floral shirt dress with colorful tights and baby flats. You say baby because of the mini heels they had, so baby flats.
“Sorry, I woke up with PMS and tender tits, I’m moody, I warn you” Nancy rolled her eyes at your words, and later she extended her hand to you as she started the usual route from your house to Hawkins High. “Cash?…”
“Just because you take me everywhere and I love you….fifteen bucks for gas from your favorite passenger princess” you state applying some brown lipstick on the mirror on your hand.
“Why don’t you make Eddie your chauffeur again?” at that you rolled your eyes. You weren’t exactly happy with him.
“I’m mad at him” Nancy turned to see you, curiously wanting to know more.
“What happened?” you sigh, grasping the hem of your dress.
“I’m ghosting him because I saw Chrissy Cunningham flirting with him. And he didn’t
Said anything to her. He knows how much she pisses me off” Nancy nodded. She heard you on several occasions accusing Chrissy of being too friendly with Eddie.
“Eddie never wants to accept when he’s wrong so I scolded him and now I’m ghosting him” Eddie’s van is parked in the lot once you enter the school property. He would try to reach you today. Yesterday you ignored him all day, and you sent Steve and Robin to fully attend your store, so he couldn’t see you.
“Good for you. He deserves it, but talk to him” you nodded at Nancy’s words. You couldn’t and wouldn’t ignore Eddie forever, just a little more. After opening the car’s door, your arm brushed against your breast, and you noticed how tender it was.
“Another fucking day…” After that, Nancy and you parted ways.
After English class, you were supposed to go to lunch with the Hellfire Club, not that you were going to do it. You were still mad at your silly boyfriend. Just as you started walking through the hall, you noticed Eddie talking with Jeff in his locker. And just as he saw you, he started jogging towards you.
“Hey! Sweets, come here!” You turned away, running to the second floor, jumping against a boy’s lunch a little. “Y/n, wait!”
You were in better shape than Eddie. So you were able to run faster and hide in an empty classroom. After closing and locking the door, you saw Eddie’s shadow passing. You heard him mumbling and cursing in a low voice.
You just didn’t want to hear him yet.
_
There’s a tap on your window in the night. You know it’s Eddie. You ignore it and turn up the volume of your player. You were mad at him.
“Jesus, y/n. I’m getting numb all over here!” he could bet you were giggling. However, he kept hearing The Zombies across your room. He tapped again, more violently.
“Is not that high, Munson” you say after opening the door.
“Yeah, not when my balls are getting strangled by the tree right here” you roll your eyes and finally let him in. “See?. Wasn’t that hard to let me in, princess”
“Why don’t you go to tap on Chrissy’s window?” Eddie thinks it’s cute when you are jealous. He can finally see you in a pink top and underwear. Looking all cute with your fluffy hair, soft belly, and hard nipples visible under the top.
“I’m sorry. I know she can’t tell I’m not interested. But you were right, I should have told her no in the first place” you narrow your eyes looking at him accusingly. He’s giving you lost puppy eyes, you can’t stay mad any longer.
“Fine. I forgive you… but you have to tell me what’s in the bag. Plus, a massage on my tender and swollen tits” Eddie smiles and gives you a naughty smirk. He places the brown bag on your desk and turns to seat on the edge of your bed.
“I might have stopped in our favorite place to get some burritos, fries, and two slices of bread pudding and red velvet cake” after ignoring him for two days you feel a little guilty now. “Robin told me you are about to start your period. So I also got some painkillers and a heating pad. The one you wanted from K-Mart”
“Oh, Eddie” suddenly you get your eyes teary. You feel guilty because it wasn’t the big deal and you created such a show for nothing. “I love you so much, baby”
“I love you too, princess. Now come here” he pats his lap and you go without hesitation. He handles you so your back is touching his chest, your legs spread and his hands wrapped around your hips. “Let me show you how sorry I am”
“Tell me where it hurts” you guide his hands towards your tits. Instantly feeling a wave of heat shatter your entire body.
“My nipples, they’re hard and swollen. I can feel my tits so heavy, Eddie” maybe you are teasing him with your naughty tone. Eddie can’t help but feel his cock getting hard.
“Get comfortable, doll…”
_
“Oh, Eddie!” you were lucky to have the trailer by yourself. Your parents are out every Friday night. Perfect to let your boyfriend sneak in and let him fuck you. In this case, finger you. “Fuck!. I need more”
“You look so fucking hot right now,” he said behind you. The left side of your bed was facing a big mirror that was a door for your closet. Being a witness of you naked with your legs spread out for your boyfriend behind. One of his skilled hands caressed one of your breasts, now covered in baby oil. While the other was mercilessly fucking you. “C’mon, baby. Make a mess on your bed and the floor for me”
“Eddie!” He could hear you moaning all day and night. Your sounds always being so pretty and erotic at the same time. While you were discovering a weird pain kink. The way Eddie pinched your nipples and make you squirm was a lot of pleasure. A mix of pain and pleasure. “Yes! There, ohh!”
“Say you love how wet I make you…” you spread your legs more, holding on to his tight. Giving him more moans until you are starting to get a little shaky. “Shit!. I love how wet you make me. Always making me gush”
“Aww, Can you hear it? Squirt, princess” the squelching sound of your pussy was driving you crazy, but Eddie was concentrating on your tits bouncing in the mirror. They looked bigger after almost an hour of pinching and groping. Maybe he was also discovering a kink. His perverted little brain would associate your swollen breasts with you being pregnant. Fantasizing with you, moaning while he made you ride him, with leaky swollen tits and a bump in the middle… He opened his eyes in time to look at you squirting so hard while high moans left your mouth. Tears falling and a big blush on your cheeks. Without a warning, cum flooded his boxers.
“Goddamit” you heard him say. Because your eyes were seeing stars. Maybe you were still squirting, but you felt like under a spell. “And that’s how we start to ruin your mattress too, baby. We have to get matching stains!” . . “You’re a dork, Eddie. But thank you, my baby cramps feel better” trying to catch your breath, all you can hear is Eddie and you panting. Both with a goofy smile while looking at each other.
“You made me cum in my pants, y/n” a soft giggle from you made him smile. Your legs felt like jelly, so he helped you. “I think I have a breeding kink. Well, not sure if a breeding kink or lactation kink”
“My swollen tits made you cum on your pants like a pre-teenager?” he rolled his eyes, taking his pants off. The wet feeling was uncomfortable. “Don’t say it like that, but yeah. Your gorgeous swollen tits made me cum in my pants”
“You know women can lactate without being pregnant?” Eddie’s eyes opened widely. His cock getting hard again.
“Is that possible?” You nodded. Looking at the big wet spot on his boxers, you could see a new erection. Another thing to love about Eddie Munson, he was so needy just like you. “Tell me what you need and I’ll get it for you”
“Shit, Eddie. You are having a kink discovery.” This time, he moaned when you started to palm him under his boxers. He throws his head against your headboard. “That’s why you suggested the baby oil in my tits, little freak”
“Stop making me feel so nasty. But… Would you let me try to make you lactate?” How can you say no to that dorky and beautiful eyes of his? it was barely impossible without hormones or therapy. But you would let him try…”Yeah. But you better in your best behavior. And that includes avoiding Chrissy Cunningham”
“I swear. On Monday I’ll leave it clear for her…” you nod, still palming him. “After you cum… Can we eat? I’m hungry”
“Sure, princess…” he leaned to kiss you on the forehead, and then he let his cock out.
_
On the high school hallways. Chrissy was retouching her gloss when he heard Eddie’s voice, making her smile with excitement. But when she turned around, you were by his side. And when you two passed in front of her, Eddie decided to say something to you.
“You still sore, doll? Guess I was too rough with you last night. Hopefully, you’ll be lactating in a couple of months” you instantly blush. Abruptly stopping Eddie at the entrance of the cafeteria.
“Eddie Munson! You can’t say that things out loud!” Eddie giggled, giving a big hug in the process. “But you wanted me to tell Chrissy to stay away from me”
“You nasty little pervert. I love you” he kisses you. Hoping he will let you know how much he loves you.

Eddie is a twenty three year old in college and living away from Hawkins. After the small town grew to hate him for something he didn’t cause, his own uncle was able to help him escape the hell hole of a town. Providing him enough money for a new place and to apply for college. Eddie didn’t see himself as a college man, too busy focusing on his Music and playing around with fifteen year old children with their D&D campaign.
Eddie knew that if he stayed longer in Hawkins, people would continue to hate him for the death of Chrissy. So, Eddie packed up his things and said goodbye to his uncle and to his friends. He promised them that he is to visit during the holidays and spend his time back here where his family and friends. But, so far Eddie has been too busy with his classes and trying to pass his third year there. He’s so close to graduating and he can’t allow his grades to slip.
He didn’t expect himself to become a straight A student, spending most of his time studying since he didn’t make many friends in the city. He did try to make some friends but it’s like people never understood his chaotic energy, causing him to close up and remain quiet whenever he was alone or with crowds. He told himself that he had one year left, one year of college before he graduates and then he’s finally able to leave. Maybe head back home to Hawkins and see his old friends or perhaps start over in a different state that’ll accept him for him.
Eddie was still growing up and his future was ahead of him. Summer break was approaching and his semester was ending, finals were approaching and he wasn’t doing good in Literature. The man never really liked the class, it was too boring and quiet, he never understood the assignments and his professor…
His professor was something else.
Eddie didn’t expect himself to fall in love with his literature professor, he never really cared about gender. Eddie rolled both ways and he didn’t mind that, he just didn’t expect himself to gain a crush on his twenty-five year old professor. One of the youngest professors on college campus.
Everyone knew who Professor Y/n was, he was the youngest and smartest man there. Every girl who took his class also had a crush on him, hell. Eddie wouldn’t be surprised if the guys fell for him too. Y/n was polite and patient and his voice was soothing, Eddie could listen to it all day but because of his distractions in class he was failing and badly.
Eddie continued to fail each quiz and if he didn’t pass his final he would have to retake this class again for next semester, not that he minded really—but he couldn’t see himself going down that road again. He didn’t want to fail again. So, Eddie stays after class, once the room is empty he approaches his professor who was busy packing up his things.
“Uh, professor Y/n?” He calls out, tilting his head to the side only to be startled back when his professor faced him. A smile on his lips as he puts his books in his bag. “How can I help you, Munson?”
Eddie gaps. “You know my name?”
Y/n chuckles. “Of course I do, why wouldn’t I know my number one failing student?”
Eddie didn’t know if he was being sarcastic or honest but the way his voice pitched and his smile widened made him feel like he was being mocked.
“Right, about that.” Eddie clears his throat. “I know I’m failing this class and wish to pass it so that I don’t have to retake it next semester. I was wondering if there is a way that I can still pass, maybe do some extra credit?” He asks, nervously fidgeting with his rings on his fingers.
His professor sighing deeply, leaning his hand against his desk as he thinks. “I can provide extra credit but I suggest finding a tutor who can help you.”
“Why not you?”
“I’m your professor, Munson. I can’t tutor you while grading everyone’s work.”
“I know, but just this once. A private lesson with you so that I can understand the assignments better.” Eddie pleads, he was desperate to pass this damn class.
Y/n latched his book bag, holding it in his hand before turning to face Eddie. “Alright Munson, just one lesson. In my office tomorrow after three.” He instructs, causing Eddie jump in victory. A smile crossing his face as he laughs, “you won’t regret it!” Eddie reminds him before bolting out of the classroom.
Eddie spends the whole day doing his assignments in the library, completing them in order to provide them to his professor for further feedback. He wants to make sure that he’s doing it correctly and to at least understand some of the work. He spends all day getting his work done until night falls, causing him to look up from his work and stare at the window. The sun was setting and the library was closing soon.
He takes his time packing up and remembers that he is suppose to contact Dustin today, catching him up on his daily life and listening to Dustin ramble on about his adventures in Hawkins or the weird shit that he and his friends got into. The good thing about being friends with the little bastard is that he’s able to help him communicate without having to use the phone.
Dustin gave Eddie a special radio that’s easy for them to talk through without him having to stand in an empty quiet hallway, talking to Dustin without thinking of other students eavesdropping on their conversation, the thought of people staring at him made him feel anxious. He’d rather have his conversation in private and enjoy the stories dustin tells him. It doesn’t take long for him to arrive back to his private room, he got lucky when he first came to the city. He had enough to afford a private room since he wasn’t willing to share and he wanted his privacy.
Approaching his desk he sets his bag on the floor and sits down, taking the radio in his hands and turning it on. “Earth to Dustin, earth to Dustin. It’s six-thirty our usual meeting time. Are you there?” He sits silently, hearing the static but no response back. “Dustin, you there?” Still nothing. “Anyone?” The static was back on, silence filled the room. It was strange for Dustin not to answer, but there could be a possibility of the kid being busy.
Eddie sighs in defeat after trying a few more times and still no response. So, he turns off his radio and sets it back down on his desk, leaning back in his seat as he stares at the blank ceiling. His room is quiet, the halls are quiet too, he’s spent the last few years like this, Locked away in his room and repeating the same routine over and over again. Nothing ever changed, he’s tried to go to parties or go out for drinks every once an awhile but no matter what he did he always felt Lonely.
Eddie yawns deeply as he comes to stand from his seat, walking over to his bed and falling down face first. Instead of waiting for Dustin’s reply he decided to get some early sleep, he wouldn’t have his first class until noon and had the rest of the morning to himself.
Eddie had forgotten about his private lesson with professor Y/n. He was too focused on getting things done that he nearly missed meeting the professor once it hit three, arriving to his office on time and knocking on the door. It only took a few seconds before his professor is letting him inside, pushing the door open to reveal his professor sitting at his desk while looking into his previous class work.
“Munson, your late.”
“By five minutes.” Eddie mumbled out, closing the door behind him and walking up to his desk, sitting across from him and dropping his bag down on his lap. He pulls the zipper open and digs out his notes and assignments. “I took my time to get some things done first—want you to check them first and see what it is that I’m doing wrong.” He sets the small stack of papers on the desk, pushing them forward as Y/n takes the assignments and hums. It only takes him a few seconds to look at the assignments before saying. “It’s not that you don’t get the assignment, you just don’t know what to say.” He takes one of the essays. “For example, your writing about the story, providing a summary.” He explains. “But you’re not explaining on how it made you feel—write it like you've experienced it and want others to know about it.”
Eddie sits back, taking in the information. Maybe his professor was right, every time they did a new assignment he would usually complete it by what he knows and not by what he learned. He sighs to himself, leaning forward and staring at his essays. “What do I have to do to get a passing grade?”
Y/n smiles. “Well, since your very determined to get a good grade how about this.” He pushed his chair back, opening his drawer and pulling out a folder, he digs through it until he finds the paper work he was looking for. He sets it in front of Eddie. It was all of his past quizzes “I’ll let you redo your quizzes, if you can at least pass five of these I’ll be able to change your grade—along with one of your essays. Once you show me that you can get this done correctly, then maybe you can pass your final.”
“And if I don’t?”
Y/n sits back in his seat. “Then you fail.” The professors honesty earned him a wince from Eddie. He looked tired and stressed, knowing what he has to do in order to get his passing grade. Eddie didn’t want to fail again, he nearly failed at school and they could have failed killing Vecna if it wasn’t for him distracting the bats along with Dustin. He looks at his assignments and with a soft nod he agrees to the terms. “How long can I take?”
“I’ll give you two weeks, give yourself some time to correct these. While also trying to ace my next quiz and essay coming up.” Eddie mentally groans to himself, not only is he correcting his work but he’s getting more work piled up. He felt behind in this class and he was so close to dropping out of it, but he’s in to deep.
“Alright,” Eddie stands from his seat, clutching the assignments in hand. “I’ll get these done before next week hits—“
“Eddie, don’t stress yourself.”
“How can I not? Finals is approaching, your class is the only one I’m failing and I can’t let that happen. I’m so close to graduating and I can’t have anything set me back.” Eddie was desperate to pass, he only had one year left before graduation. All of his classes were passing but this one, no matter how small the set back was.
Y/n was slowly feeling guilty. Yes, he was a strict teacher towards students and they always tried to find ways to get things done easily but Eddie was different. He can see the determination in his eyes of wanting to pass this year without having any failing classes. So, he stands from his desk and rounds the table, taking the assignments from Eddie and only giving him two.
“Why don’t we do this instead—you get these two done by tonight and tomorrow you see me again and I’ll grade them, provide feedback, and see what I can do to help. Will take small steps.”
“And the essay?”
“Essay comes last, focus on getting these done first and the upcoming quiz you have this Friday.” Eddie slowly smiles at his professor, glancing at the assignments before nodding. “Alright, Will see each other again tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow, same time and in my office.” He explains, watching Eddie nod before leaving his office. Y/n sighs to himself and leans back in his desk, smiling softly to himself, before putting the rest of the assignments away.
Eddie is quick to correct his work, setting it aside as he gets started on studying for the next quiz that is coming up this Friday. He’s distracted by everything that he doesn’t hear the radio going off, the sound of Dustin’s static voice as he calls out to him.
“—ddie.”
“Eddie!”
Eddie is startled out of his study, turning around in his chair to stare at the radio next to his bed, going silent as he waits for another response. Hoping that it wasn’t his imagination.
“Come in Eddie!” He hears Dustin’s annoyed tone, the same tone that reminds him of the kids big fat ego. Eddie sighs to himself, setting his stuff aside before standing from his seat and snatching the radio from his bedside, clicking the button down as he speaks back. “It’s late Dustin, this better be good.” It was nearing eleven and he’s been up all night completing his work and getting ready for his next quiz for this week. He didn’t have time rest or sleep, too focused on getting it done.
“Geez, can’t take a small break?” He hears Dustin ask on the other end.
Eddie chuckles to himself, shaking his head. “Not when I’m trying to pass a class. Do you want me to visit Hawkins or would you like me to stay here instead?” He questions.
The radio goes silent. He can already imagine Dustin’s frantic panic at the thought of him spending summer break in the city then back with him and his friends in Hawkins.
“Are you crazy?! You really think I can stand the others without you for the next four months?!”
Eddie responds back with a laugh, he know how well Dustin gets along with everyone else but the little bastard always found ways to find something annoying about them or get themselves into trouble. Henderson was a ball of energy and sarcasm, he was a genius but the kid was easily attached to him and if he missed this year to visit Hawkins. Dustin would for sure come after him.
“Don’t worry my little warrior, I’ll be there next month. I just need to ace this final and you guys can have me for the next four months out.” Eddie stands from his bed, walking towards his desk and putting his finished assignments away in his bag, he leaves the unfinished work to the side. It was easy to complete and could get it some during one of his other periods, right now he was mainly focused on professor Y/n’s quizzes.
Eddie froze at the thought of the Professor having to teach him everyday, privately. Everything was quickly coming to him, the thought of the two of them spending majority of the day together. He did have a crush on the Professor and knew that nothing is to happen between them. Eddie didn’t know if his professor even had a thing for men or women? He never heard or seen his professor with anyone romantically, maybe he was single and preferred to keep it that way?
Eddie was too distracted by his sudden thoughts that he doesn’t realize Dustin talking to him through the radio. The kid was rambling about Steve and his friends and what they are planning on doing for the summer. He shakes the thoughts out of his head and focused on the conversation, listening to Dustin talk.
“—anyways, oh! Steve said that a family friend of his was visiting town and that he won’t be around much.” He could hear the eye roll. “Son of a bitch promised to take us camping but he’d rather spend time with someone he rarely knows.”
Eddie hums. “Maybe he’ll ditch his guest and continue on with the camping plans.” He shrugs his shoulders, moving silently around his room and getting ready for bed. “Either way, talk to Steve about the plans and see if they got changed or if we can still do the camping idea. Right now, I have to get some rest—got to meet with my professor tomorrow and gotta get ready for my finals.” He lets Dustin know about his plans for tomorrow, before Dustin can say anything else he’s quick to turn off the radio.
He tossed it on the empty side of his bed, getting under the sheets and lying down in the darkness after he turned off the remaining lights, which was really his light desk. He tries to get some shut eye but the thought of seeing Y/n again keeps him awake for the rest of the night.
Eddie barley got any sleep once morning hit, dark bags under his eyes and hair all messy. It takes him a few minutes to get ready for the day, ignoring the way his eyes looked as he got his things and heads out of his dorm. He makes his way downstairs, ignoring any other morning students that he passed. After staying in the city for a few years he’s grown to distance himself from others he didn’t really like.
He’s been known as the ‘freak’ of Hawkins and he didn’t want to be seen as the freak here. He’s been doing fine on his own that he doesn’t need any friends here, once he’s done with school he’ll be able to return back home and find himself a stable job that he will enjoy. Eddie was still into music, playing his guitar whenever he had the time and writing music, he considered his music more of a hobby since the interest of engineering caught his attention. Before his dad left him he was taught how to take care of cars and what to look for whenever it broke down, he learned many things from his dad at a young age before he was left with his uncle.
He stopped messing around with cars and focused on his music, but now that he’s on his own he’s decided to pick up engineering again. Hopefully that’s able to help him out with his future just a bit. As he walks around the hallways, turning a corner he slams into a broad chest. He stumbled back surprised and ready to throw a fit at whoever he slammed into.
“Eddie?”
Eddies eyes widen, looking up to see professor Y/n standing in front of him. He squints his eyes at him, taking him in. His hair was messy and his clothes are all over the place, his tie loose while he holds some papers in his left hand. “You okay?” He hears him ask, snapping him back to reality as Eddie nods. “Yeah, just didn’t see where I was going.” He mumbled out, too tired to even process what was going on.
He hears Y/n chuckle. “Looks like neither of us got some rest.” He points out, also taking notice of the dark bags under Eddie’s eyes as he rubs the tiredness away. “Yeah, was up all night talking to an old friend and getting work done.” He explains, not knowing why he was telling him this.
Professor Y/n hums. “Can’t say that I relate. I was suppose to have these papers graded by today and forgot last night. So, I stayed up to finish.”
Eddie smirks. “Professor Y/n, slacking off? That’s not normal.” He teased, knowing how professional and ready Y/n is, he was the star teacher of college. Everyone knew who he was and what he did due to him being the youngest teacher ever. Both he and Eddie were only a few years apart and it wouldn’t surprise him if Y/n passed as a college student.
“Very funny, Munson.” Y/n smacks the top of Eddie’s head with his paper work, giving him a soft glare. “I hope you got your work done.” He was referring to the quizzes. Eddie swats his hand away, grumbling. “Of course I got it done. I’m trying to get my shit finished.”
Eddie was too tired to care about his language and Y/n was too tried to scold the man from the way he spoke. The Professor raised a brow, checking the time on the watch around his wrist. “Classes don’t start for another thirty minutes, if you like I can review your work before coming to class?” He offers, willing to push up their meeting time a little earlier.
Eddie is quick to nod, agreeing with the professors idea. “Let’s.” He adds, causing the other to chuckle before guiding them back to the professors office. The halls are semi empty, some students walking around in silence due to it being too early. Some students were either walking with friends or heading down to the lunch rooms to buy a morning breakfast or get themselves some coffee.
Y/n could go for a coffee right now, something to keep him awake—or perhaps he can cancel his class and head back home and sleep. But, he knows he can’t do that. Not when he promised his students that they would be getting their graded assignments back today or else all of that time he wasted without sleeping was for nothing.
Upon reaching his office, he’s quick to unlock it and pushing the door open. Allowing Eddie inside first who stepped inside the room, taking in the warm comfortable silence.
“Here let me Just—“ Y/n gets his desk cleaned up, setting the stack of papers aside and sitting across from Eddie, yawning tiredly. “Alright.” He murmured out while Eddie fished out his assignments, handing them over to his professor who takes them in his hands, scanning through the assignments and reading through everything twice. The professors tilts his head to the side at current parts of the assignment, questioning Eddie on how he got the result.
Once Eddie provided the explanation on his he got his answer it was easier for Y/n to understand what he meant. “At first I thought you were failing but, turns out that you just explain things in a different way. Sometimes they don’t make sense but after you explained to me the process it makes better sense.” He blurts out, setting the papers down and rubbing the back of his neck. “So far you’ve done well, I’ll still have to see how you get the rest done before your essay.”
Eddie gives a small soft smile, glad that he’s gotten it done. “I’ll give you a passing grade for those two but, here are the other two that you will be working on for this week.” Y/n fished out the folder and hands Eddie another two of his old quizzes that he is suppose to fix. Eddie takes them in his hands and sighs, “Thank you.” He whispers, putting the papers away before asking. “Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
“Why are you helping me?”
Y/n chuckles. “Eddie, I’m you professor I’m suppose to help.”
“No—I know, what I’m trying to ask is. Why help me? I mean, any student who has the chance to make corrections and fix their late assignments would be happy but you never allowed it until I came in. So why me?”
Y/n sighs to himself, leaning forward to cross his arms on his desk, focusing on the closed curtain to his right, wanting to remain distracted. “Because you remind me of myself.” He tells Eddie, giving him a glance. “I see your struggle and how much you want to get things down. I was like that when I was young, no one believed that I would make it this far and now look,” he says. “I’m the youngest teacher here and graduated early from high school and college only to become a professor here. I worked hard and focused on what I wanted.”
Eddie never really knew why Y/n became a professor, it wasn’t his business to know but the fact that Y/n was telling him this made him feel better. He wasn’t studying to become something big, no. He was afraid of failing everyone he knew, afraid of showing them his failure for school and college. He rarely socialized or spoke to anyone about his life.
Hawkins did leave a horrible scar on him, from being the towns freak to fighting off the upside down with his friends. Once they defeated Vecna he expected things to get better but they never did, the town still hated him for Chrissy’s murder. The police was able to sweep up the mess and covered up the story, letting the town know that Eddie wasn’t the person who got her killed and blamed it on drugs.
That didn’t stop the town from thinking of him differently. Even though he visited every summer he usually remained indoors and never went anywhere alone, afraid that someone would come after him and continue to blame him.
“Don’t stress yourself too much, Eddie. Everyone is allowed to be selfish every once an awhile.”
Y/n stands from his seat and gently placed a hand on Eddie’s shoulder, giving it a soft squeeze before letting go. “I should get going.” He added before leaving the office with Eddie alone. Eddie bites his lip, gripping his bag close as he glanced back to the door, deciding for himself if he was ready to leave the room.
The rest of the month went by quickly. Eddie spent majority of his time in Y/n’s office, getting the help he needed and passing his assignments. The longer he spent with Y/n the more he learned about the professors life, so far he’s found out that the professor has an older brother who’s a doctor while his parents live on the country side. He spoke highly of his parents and how hard they worked for their children to get into college and at least have an education. Y/n’s family sounded nice and comforting, Eddie enjoyed their time together.
Eddie had also taken notice of the way his professor spoke, with a soft tone full of knowledge, he spoke highly about his lectures and how much he wanted his students to learn and pass. Their were times where their hands would graze or fingers would touch whenever the Professor reached out for his paper. Eddie’s crush for the Professor slowly grew to the point where he didn’t know what to do.
Again, he knew that nothing would ever happen between them. But each time he sees the man he can he’ll but close up, getting flustered around him and skipping their meet ups every once an awhile, not wanting to be discovered about his attraction towards his Professor. Eddie knew he is to keep these feelings deep down and ignore them, but each time the professor entered the classroom during one of their sessions—those feelings would quickly come back.
Finals was this week before the year was over, Eddie had already taken his tests from other classes and won’t be getting the results back until summer break hits. So far, Professor Y/n’s class is the only one he had left, which is why he’s sitting in the middle row, watching Y/n as he passed out the test.
“Again, this test is worth half of your grade—once you complete the test feel free to bring it up to my desk and you are free to go. Your final grade will be provided before summer break hits.” Y/n hands the sheets out, reaching Eddie’s row as he sets the test in front of him. A small grin on Y/n’s lips. “Good luck.” He whispered before he continued handing the tests.
Once everyone and their final, Y/n stands in front of the class. “You have to rest of the class hour to get this complete. Good luck and begin.” He gives everyone a smile before the sound of rustling pages is heard throughout the room. Every student focusing on their own work while Eddie tapped his pencil, reading the passages and writing down his answers, he tries his best to take his time but his anxiety was making things worse, causing him to rush through the test.
Y/n was silently walking down the rows, keeping a close eye on all of his students. He held a book in hand that he wound read every once an awhile before focusing back on the class. After thirty minutes a few of his students have already finished, moving up to the front and placing their papers on his desk. Little by little the classroom grew smaller, students were finishing up and leaning the class.
As the room continued to grow empty, only six of his students were left and one of them was Eddie. Who sat alone in his room, focusing hard on his test. A pencil in hand and another tucked behind his ear while holding a concentrated expression. Y/n sighs nervously, moving to the front of the class to organize the papers, receiving the last few tests to the point where Eddie was the last to finish.
Eddie approaches Y/n. A completed test in hand as he holds it out to him. Y/n smiles and gently takes it. “If you want I can grade it right now?” He offers.
Eddie nervously shakes his head. “No, I’d rather wait.”
“Sounds find to me.” Y/n can tell how nervous Eddie is, so he randomly sticks his test in between the others. Letting him know that his test won’t be the first or the last to be graded.
“Enjoy your break, Eddie.”
Eddie’s breath hitched. “I—thank you for your help. I really enjoyed our time.” Eddie couldn’t say if he was ever going to see Y/n again, either he passed or failed the class he wouldn’t be seeing y/n again or spending anymore time with him. So, he enjoyed their last moments in his office before the final hit.
“Have a great summer Professor Y/n.” Eddie adds before rushing out of the classroom and heading back to his dorm room. His results won’t be come in until two days before break hits, giving him time to pack up his things and getting ready to visit Hawkins for the next few months. As Eddie walked further away from his classes and closed to his room, his anxiety was slowly seeping away. The minute he’s inside he’s quick to grab the radio from his night stand and reach out to Dustin to confirm their summer plans.
“The king is here!”
Eddie laughs as a group of teenagers throw themselves on him, hugging him and laughing in joy of seeing him again. He smiles widely when he pulls away from Dustin’s grip, holding him by the shoulders. “Never change Henderson, looks like you kept that promise.”
He flicks Dustin’s hat, causing the kid to laugh.
He’s quick to greet the others, giving Mike and Lucas a welcome hug. Eddie was considered an adult and if people knew that he hung out with teenagers younger than him, they’ll continue to find ways to avoid him and keep everyone away from him. But Eddie wasn’t the only adult who hung around them. Steve, Nancy, and Robin also grew close of the teens, after being on the upside down together it somehow brought them closer.
“Are you staying at your uncles?”
Dustin asks, following Eddie who rounded his van and pulling the side door open. “Nope.” He responds, pulling a bag towards him and unzipping it. “My uncle is gonna be gone for the whole month—got a special job of some sorts.” He shrugs his shoulders. “I’m going to be staying at a Motel for the first month and then I’ll be back with my uncle.”
Dustin frowns. “You’ll be okay on your own?” Dustin knew the terror Eddie went through when the town started coming after him, the poor man couldn’t go anywhere alone. But Eddie knew he can handle the town on his own if anything were to happen.
“I’ll be fine. I’ve dealt with monsters, I think I can handle Hawkins.” Eddie gives dustin a reassuring smile. He didn’t want to upset the kid after traveling so far to see him again.
“If you say so.” Dustin brushes off his concerns. “How were finals?” He finally asks while watching Eddie empty out his bag with some of his belongings, mainly food and water was in the bag he unzipped. “Good.” Eddie’s smile falters a little as he remembers waking up early on the day of test scores, rushing out of his dorm to get to the office on time where he was given his final grades.
Eddie had passed all of his classes, including Y/n’s. He didn’t know how to feel at the thought of never seeing the Professor again, well, not really, he still saw him everyone once awhile in the building but being able to speak with him again in private is something he won’t be able to do again.
He was upset on the ride here but was quick to tell himself that nothing was ever going to happen in the first place.
“I’ll be graduating next year.”
Dustin grows happy for him, knowing that he’ll be graduating soon.
“Anyways, what are the plans?”
Dustin nods. “It looks like we are still going to our camping trip for the week. Steve wants us go all meet at his house and drop our stuff off their, will be staying the week there until it’s time for us to head out.”
“Wait, I thought Steve said that he was having a guest over?”
“Yeah, well, this guest of his will be staying at his place for a month. Steve’s parents aren’t home but are letting this guy stay their to release some stress from work—whoever the hell he is.”
“And he’s gonna be okay with a house packed full of kids and adults?”
Dustin glared at Eddie. “I’m not a kid.” He bites out. Eddie can only roll his eyes as he closed the door from his van. “Well, I guess I’ll be spending the week with you all before getting my room for the month.” With that, Eddie begins to help the teenagers and loading their stuff into his van since he was the one driving them to Steve’s place. He helps Lucas and Mike with their things before they head out to pick up Will, El, and Jonathan. He’s told that the rest of the others would meet up at Steve’s.
So, he makes multiple trips around the neighborhood, picking everyone up and driving to Steve’s House. “Damn, Steve lives here?” Eddie whistles as he parks the van on the side of the road.
“Steve’s parents are rich.” Mike is quick to say as everyone gets out of the van. Eddie chuckles between groans as he steps out of the car and starts to stretch, popping his muscles and sighing in relief.
“Alright,” He watches the others unload the van. “I’ll go let Steve know that we are here.” He lets the others know before heading towards the door, giving it a few knocks as he waits, placing his hands on his hips and gazing at the others over his shoulder. Watching the teens argue with each other when they find out that they forget to pack certain things. Eddie smiles to himself before the door unlocks.
Eddie turns back around. “Hey Steve, where do you want the little lambs to put their—“
Eddie froze, stuttering as his eyes widen. When they land on his Professor, standing on the other side of the door wearing casual clothes, looking like a normal human being and not someone who always wore fancy clothes to class.
“Eddie?”
“Professor.” He breaths out in shock.

You and Mike are bickering like an old married couple, which wasn’t new. Your hand was wrapped tight around his wrist while you led him around, which also wasn’t new. No, what was new was that this was happening at a party, something Mike generally didn’t get invited to.
And he wasn’t, not really – neither were Dustin or Max, who were currently huddled up on the couch looking ridiculously uncomfortable; El was drunk, but at least she looked happy. Will found some luck talking to a guy on the patio. Lucas was more comfortable, leaning against the side of the couch also relatively drunk but at least able to talk to the teammates who came up to say hi.
The reason any of them were here, really, was because of you and Lucas – you’d made it a point to tell your group of student athletes that if they wanted you two anywhere, then the rest of your friends would be able to come too. Lucas nodded vigorously next to you, letting you do most of the talking.
It was a begrudging agreement (from both sides, honestly), but one flash of your puppy dog eyes had them all caving. Mike took a bit more convincing, but after promising him more movie nights in exchange for a party every other week, he caved.
And that’s how you’d ended up here, huddled in the center of Chrissy Cunningham’s living room with your best friends, some fellow cheerleaders, and a whole lot of frat guys, writing down all of your names on little slips of paper. You loved party games.
“Alright, losers, we’re playing seven minutes in heaven–” Chance’s voice rings throughout the room and you tilt your head up from where it was previously resting on Mike’s shoulder, “All of your names are in this hat, so we’re gonna pick two and then send you in a closet with whoever you get – no redos, we don’t care who you end up with, just, like, knock on the door or something if you guys are fucking when seven minutes is up.”
His friends laugh and you grimace, thinking distantly about how maybe Mike was right and you didn’t need to play every party game you came across, but –
“Okay, Y/N –” The sound of your name being called makes your eyes widen and your body tense. You feel Mike’s arm tense from its place around your shoulders, tightening almost imperceptibly.
“Aaaand – oh. Wheeler,” Mike’s name is called with much less enthusiasm than yours is, coated with distaste, “You lucky bastard.”
You feel your entire body heat up because oh my god, why does he have to flirt with you right now?, and also because you’re currently about to be sent into a dark closet with your best friend slash longtime unrequited crush.
You hear a bark of laughter at your side and give Dustin a withering glare (which of course doesn’t shut him up, but you tried). You’re immediately very aware of the fact that your knees are touching and his arm is around you, a position that was previously so comfortable now feeling so, so intense.
You want to scream, and maybe die, but you guys are getting hauled up way too quickly by some basketball players that are way too strong for their own good, then being led (and frankly thrown) into a relatively large closet. The last thing you see before the door closes is El giving the two of you a double thumbs up, bless her heart, while Dustin, Lucas, and Max laugh their asses off. Nice.
“And your timeeee starts – now,” You hear Chrissy’s girly giggle from outside of the door and make a mental note to throw a pompom at her during your next practice; she was one of the only people who knew about your crush on Mike and you just knew she was kicking her feet right now.
And then…silence. Save for the dull thud of the music blaring outside the closet, it’s just you two, breathing in the dark. You fish around for a light and as soon as it clicks on you both seem to realize that you are way too close.
You and Mike retreat to opposite sides of the closet and you busy yourself with looking at a pretty coat (it’s not pretty, it’s linty and has threads hanging off of it, it’s just pink). You hear him clear his throat and think about how hard it would be to fake your own death and move to Iceland.
“So, uh, hi –” Hus stupid voice breaks through the silence and somehow your humiliation is taken over by an overwhelming urge to punch him, “Crazy seeing you here.”
And that’s what sends you into a fit of giggles. You shake your head, already crawling forward so you can sit next to him, close enough to smack his head lightly, “You’re a fucking idiot.”
“Hey! I was trying to lighten the mood!” He laughs, swatting your arm away before pulling back to get a good look at you, smile fond. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad.
And then the reality of the situation sets in again and you both get quiet.
“What do we – what are we supposed to do?” His voice is soft, honestly kind of worried, and you can’t bring yourself to throw him a light-hearted quip.
“I mean – like, us in particular or the game?” His expression indicates the latter and you shrug, “Usually people make out. Sometimes they’re caught having sex, that’s why Chance said to knock on the door – you know, I have no clue how people have time to do that, but –”
You cut yourself off, realizing you’re rambling again, and offer him a sheepish smile. God, you haven’t felt this nervous around him since you were ten and figured out what a crush was.
“But, uh, yeah. That’s – usually what happens.” Why were you so nervous? You were in a closet with your best friend. So what?
“Okay, cool, cool, perfect, yeah –”  He nods, throwing his head back against the wall and running his hands down his face, “So what do we do, then?”
“Um – I dunno. Just sit here, I guess?” You grip his wrist to check his watch. The touch feels like it burns, “We have five minutes. You could start your ‘I told you so’ lecture about how I never should’ve dragged you to this party, we could devise a plan to kill the others when we get out of here, we coul–”
“Have you had your first kiss yet?”
You splutter, “W-what?”
“Your first kiss. You had it?”
“Well – no, but I don’t really see what that has to do with –”
“Why?”
“Are you insane?”
“Answer the question. You’ve had boyfriends.”
He’s right. You sit there and twiddle your thumbs, biting down on your bottom lip. How did you tell him that the reason those boyfriends had never lasted for more than a month was because they always ended up getting jealous of your nerd best friend, and you’d give them up in a heartbeat for him? How did you tell him you never had your first kiss because you were saving it for him?
So you do what you do best; you deflect.
“Well have you had yours?”
He has the audacity to look surprised. To scrunch his stupid eyebrows together and let his jaw drop. God, he’s so annoying.
“Well no, but I think that’s kind of irr–”
“Why?” Your tone is mocking, your nose scrunching up while you do a crude imitation of his voice. Whiny and grating.
“I asked you first.”
“I asked you second.”
“Okay, and you always told me first is better, so I don’t think its very fair of you to–”
“I was saving it!” Your outburst cuts him off and your hands shoot up to cover your mouth, eyes wide like you can’t believe you just said that (you can’t).
“Saving it for what? For who? You could’ve had, like, all of those meatheads on the football team by now. You’re literally vice captain of the cheerleading squad, pompoms, the hell are you saving it for?”
“For someone special. But he’s a fucking idiot and can never take a hint.”
He looks at you in confusion. You think you can physically hear the clock ticking and your eye twitches.
“Oh my god — you, dipshit! It’s you!”
His eyes widen and he jumps. Jumps back. You want to die. You feel your entire life crumbling – having to explain to your friend group that you’ve left the country because you finally told Mike you liked him and he didn’t accept it, having to learn how to translate cheer skills into farming, having to –
You feel the pressure of lips against yours and your mind goes blank. Mike’s lips. Oh my god. Mike is kissing you. He’s got his big hands on your waist, tugging at the fabric of your shirt insistently and you all but clamber to seat yourself on his lap.
You’re straddling him now, legs caging in bony hips, arms looped around his neck, and it feels nice. Right. Like two puzzle pieces. Millions of little butterflies erupt in your tummy and you think you’re shaking. His lips are so soft, everything you’d ever dreamed of and fantasized about and written in your stupid pink diary.
He pulls back. Looks at you with half-lidded eyes. Gives you that stupid, stupid dopey smile that you hate so much and lets his hands fall to your hips, “Woah.”
“Woah indeed, Mikey –” You giggle, feeling a bit hazy yourself. Is this what they feel like in the movies? “Such a romantic, aren’t you?”
He rolls his eyes, and you catch yourself counting the freckles across his nose. His voice snaps you out of it, “Sooo, we got –” He looks down at his watch, “Two minutes. Got any ideas on what to do for two minutes?”
Your lips curl up in a smirk and he almost groans when your hands tangle in his hair, long nails scratching against his scalp, “I’ve got a few ideas. Oh – wait up.”
He eyes you curiously, big brown eyes confused and looking like a lost puppy when you pull a hand from his hair, only to widen when you give one, two, three knocks on the door. A message.
Your smirk only widens to a grin at the commotion it immediately causes – you hear Max gag, then El giggle, hear the distinct sound of Lucas hollering, and a chorus of groans from a frat’s worth of men who now realized you were off the market. You hear Dustin say “Finally, it’s only taken our entire lives” and you decide to plot his murder another time.
You’ve got priorities.
You turn back to the boy of your dreams, leaning forward to press your nose against his and grin.
“Ever thought you’d have your first kiss and lose your virginity in the same night?”
“Nah, but I knew it’d be with you.”
“Oh, you asshole, don’t one up me like that.”
You cut off whatever he was going to reply with with another kiss, this time more passionate than the first one. Hungrier. You tug on his hair and use the opportunity of him gasping to slide your tongue against his, arching your chest into his with a whine. It’s perfect.
You’ve both got a lot of time to make up for.
