Set post first wizarding war. "Lily Evans disappeared just when the war with Voldemort ended. Nobody knows why she left. James Potter doesn't care. He hasn't missed her at all."
It reads like a character study. All of the repressed emotions are so well-portrayed that I could picture all their facial expressions and body language.
The dynamic between Lily and the marauders really illustrated how she wasn't just James' girlfriend - she was their friend too. I just wanted to give them all a hug.
Up In Arms by @mppmaraudergirl
When Lily jokingly tells her owl to deliver a letter to "the love of her life", i.e. Marlene McKinnon, her owl misinterprets the directive and, to her horror, her ode to James Potter’s arms lands squarely in his lap.
The banter in this one is so good that it made my friend fall back in love with jily's dynamic and read fics again

My procrastinating ass has finally decided to do something I’ve been meaning to do for months. I’ll start sharing some Jily fics that I love (old and new) so they can get additional love and, if you want, we can talk about them together! This isn’t meant to exclude anyone and, since I have bookmarked an absurd amount of stories, sooner or later everyone will probably end up here 💀 (I hope you don’t mind).
The song remains the same by @startanewdream : When James Potter grows up as friend of Severus Snape, and on the first day of Hogwarts, Sirius Black befriends Lily Evans, some things change, but fate is inevitable.
I know, I know, the premise is unusual, but it works perfectly!!! There's not only Jily to enjoy but also the beautiful development of James and Sirius' friendship because like the title says, the song remains the same.

Shades of Red by cgner : Lily Evans is just too distracting. Especially her hair - what color is it, exactly? 1 distracted James + 1 poorly attended cauldron = 1 fortuitous (?) accident.
This is so funny and delicious (there's James accidentally brewing a love Potion and NOT liking the consequences 😂)
The Rise and Fall of the Extraordinary Jilysanschilly: Including Excerpts of their Best Collected Works by @elanev91: James Potter and Lily Evans are both wildly successful YouTubers and Sirius cannot believe that people ship them enough to write erotic fanfiction about them.
I need to thank @practicecourts for recommending this.. I had TEARS from laughing.
Hold me like you mean it by @emerqldv : But out of all of those moments, large or small, the biggest mistake of all was Lily Evans sleeping with her best friend all in favor of soothing his heartache. (And falling in love with him in the process.)

6. Are there any fics from others you reread all the time?
In general, I reread all ongoing fics as they're being updated! For instance, anytime @takearisk-ao3 posts a new chapter to AG or TPFY, I will reread the last chapter, then the chapter that was updated, and then the same updated chapter again to catch anything I might've missed. The same goes for Beasts by @whinlatter. Then there’s Key Limes by cgner that I probably hit up about once a year, anything and everything by St. Margaret’s when I’m feeling nostalgic, such a beautiful blank (but smooth it) by pocketfullof (it's on LJ if you haven't read it! Go!), and currently I’m going through Someone Else’s Life by @ashotofogdensoldfirewhiskey again because the fluff is *chef's kiss*.
18. What’s one of your favorite lines you’ve written in a fic?
Off the top of my head, I think it’s this line from everything i am is yours:
She’s framed in the kitchen window that early August morning, and when she turns to greet him, she looks otherworldly, fae girl come to life, tinged in soft blue light and hair aflame.

Thought I’d share a few of my favourite older Jily fics for anyone that hasn’t come across them before, or wants to reminisce.
Purely Business by Zayz (oneshot, rated M) - head students-with-benefits angst
"They didn’t do it out of love. They were not in love, nor did they want to be. They barely knew each other. None of this was romantic, not even close. What they had together was purely business."

She's almost to the library when a hand grabs her wrist and yanks her into what appears to be an empty classroom. It is. They've been here before. She's intimately acquainted with the desk nearest the door. But it's a good thing she's not honest.
Kiss and Tell by SunshineDaisiesWindmills (multi-chapter, rated M)
The rules were simple. Provoke each other. Scream at each other. Snog each other. Do this as frequently as possible, but don't ever, ever kiss and tell.
If We Only Die Once by Apalapucian (multi-chapter, rated M)
Lily gets flak for dating James and gets sucked in to the belief that he's better off without her. She tells him she doesn't love him anymore, and after a while, she manages to make him believe the lie.
Bloody Shangrila by dorcasdeadowes (multi-chapter, rated M) - muggle AU
"The way she babbled on about the place made it seem like some sort of promised land, but James knew full well that is was nothing of the sort. Sowsworth was a wasteland that comprised of seven shops, a pub, and the incredibly bored shadows of lonely people. It was not bloody Shangri-la.
Love and Other Tragedies by Fancyeyes (multi-chapter, rated M) - Lily’s on a journey of self-discovery while trying to solve murders of students. This has one of the best plot twists I’ve ever read in fic.
And the Wolves All Cry by monroeslittle (long-shot, rated M) - AU angst (with a happy ending)

yes! I can!
@ghostofbambifanfiction has written Careless Texter, which is my fav love square fic of all time, as well as n00b, which I haven't read yet but I'm sure is amazing.
kristina, aka cgner on ao3, wrote Collaboration Squared which is jily but miraculous ladybug fanfiction-based, and I will be reading that right now... AND playing the hero, being the fool is by the same author! it's an actual miraculous AU!
also!!! I almost forgot! but @mppmaraudergirl is writing The Reckless Now, which is a love square!

Some Everlark writers I love are atetheredmind, HGRomance, and misshoneywell. Some favs from theirs include The Act, Electra, No Unicorns, Legend, etc. Their work was really formative for me growing up reading fics and expanded what I thought fic could even be. I think they're to credit with my love of an AU.
monroeslittle has incredible Everlark and Jily epics! Anytime I write a long af oneshot, I think of her.
sideraclara has a next-gen HP fic series called The Fred Weasley Memorial Scholarship that I love a lot. Not Jily but good if you like next gen HP fic with nerdy gays :)
cgner has many Jily fics I love, notably a Gilmore Girls-inspired oneshot that's lovely. GhostofBambi is also incredible!
These are all the ones I can think of off the top of my head/are on AO3 that I know of. Many of my fav Everlark/THG and Jily/HP fic that I read was on ffn.net and I didn't move to ao3 until recently! But if I think/find some, I'll come back to this post.

Hiya! Do you have any fics that you consider to be /your/ classics? Like old favorites or fics that helped shape your view of the marauders era?
omg this is such a cool question! (i was actually looking at my ffn account the other day so some of these fics are top of mind)
i have to say obviously TLAT, and the white album and haggis from algernon as well. cgner’s james really informs mine in particular, imo, and to live nobly and firelight waltz and key limes are some of my all-time faves. others that stick out are bloody shangri-la by firbolging, good, decent by bee daily, anything ever by october31st1981, and that elusive aha! moment by wilhelmina willoughby.
a special shout-out also to a fic called the marauder’s compendium which i think is now gone (rip) which was one of those parody fics where the marauders + lily read fic about themselves — i remember it never failed to make me laugh and the tropes it poked fun at also informed my characterisation way back when (in a what to avoid way, ha!)

Yes! I do like me a jily comfort fic, and @fetchalgernon is a fabulous writer.
I really need to reread that when where James is the PM and Lily is an MP. And that royalty one! tbh I could probably do with a reread of all of her works 😂

This fic is SO GOOD. I don’t usually like to recommend (or for that matter read) works in progress, just in case they’re abandoned, but there’s only one chapter left in this and I just couldn’t wait. Brought to you by Jily geniuses fetchalgernon and @ghost-of-bambi, this absolutely delightful fic is a modern Jily AU set on The Bachelor. James has been roped into the show by his mother and Lily by her boss. Supported by a beautifully fleshed-out plot and cast of characters, this fic is witty, warm, and poignant all in one. I have so enjoyed reading it and cannot say enough good things about it!! I’m torn between excitement for the last chapter and impending disappointment that it will be over, but I can always count on these authors for wickedly clever and perfectly characterized Jily fun.

The Virgin King 👀 I have to know about it lol
This fic is 100% inspired by the Key Limes fanfic by cgner/@fetchalgernon (which I LOVE and have reread a handful of times now and whoever hasn't read it should do so IMMEDIATELY), as well as the fast-paced romance of Prince Harry/Meghan Markle.
It's a modern, royal AU and Hinny-centric, of course. I'm really excited to get into it! Here's the beginning of the first chapter:

Every newspaper in the United Kingdom dedicated their front page to him on his birthday, and the Daily Prophet was no different. They partook in the event in their usual brash manner, crossing the line of common decency with a bold headline in gaudy, old English font, unable to be missed by anyone waltzing past a newsstand or making a stop at their local grocer.

The byline read Rita Skeeter, the ever present thorn in Harry’s side, and the blatant, money-grab of a title accompanied by an unflattering photo of Harry in his royal regalia, grim-faced and alone on the balcony of Potter Palace, all made sense. It was the cherry on top of this fine bit of kindling. If only it wasn’t the middle of summer.
(He could easily make one sweltering exception, though.)
