I'm not super into modern AUs, but every now and then I get a hankering for some hardened-tattoo-artist-with-ennui-meets-baby-gay-bookseller-who-still-has-dreams. You know, as you do. Also I've pretty much read everything else while getting over the plague, and I gotta say to people who will understand:
I love that super niche interest AUs exist. Just the IDEA of them. I love that someone took their specific career, passion, hobby, graduate research, diagnosis, and that one long strange trip down the Wikipedia rabbit hole, and came to the conclusion that what this meet-cute needs, in explicit detail, is a(n):
X-ray technician
Urban mushroom hunter
Speech pathologist
Venomous snake milker
Crime scene cleaner
Prosthetic painter
Infectious disease specialist
Haunted house zombie
etc...
Even if I don't understand it, ESPECIALLY if I don't understand it. You clearly did when you wrote it.

i think a lot of writers including me need to embrace the fact that sometimes your work is recognisably influenced by something and that's not a bad thing! i took the scent of magic from holly webb's rose series, my worldbuilding is inspired by leigh bardugo's six of crows, phillip pullman played a huge part in inspiring me to write grand, sweeping arcs like in his dark materials, tolkien made me want to write about travellers journeying across treacherous land, the list goes on and on and on. and i hope that people can see some influences in my work, that means i'm doing it well! and they stretch all the way back to when i was a tween just getting into fantasy and "grown up" books. would love to hear about who has inspired other people's writing: if you write gothic, what books have you infused your work with? fellow fantasy writers, what have you borrowed and tweaked from?

a list of crimes committed by alison cooper:
assault (technically not committed on purpose, but could’ve been construed as such by the builder who she, very violently, threw a mug at)
failure to comply with building regulations (was told the house was structurally unsafe after building work and not to have X-amount of people in one room at any one time, but lied about it for monetary gain which then led to a workplace accident)
blackmail (knew about barclay’s tax avoidance and used it against him to save herself money in legal fees)
confidence trickery/fraud (conned several paranormal investigators)
criminal damage (punctured a guest’s tyres)
bribery (to stop her driveway being “fixed” by the council)
told the captain he couldn’t sing (isn’t actually a crime but should be)
bonus morally dubious behaviour:
genuinely thought barclay was going to die and was happy to let him do so without helping him as long as he didn’t die on her land

SO MANY HEADCANONS
- aang is pansexual
- he has a decent singing voice
- him and ty lee are besties, ty lee teaches him how to braid hair to surprise katara. These hair sessions are also their Gossip Hour.
- i personally rlly like the idea of nonbinary aang, or gender fluid aang.
- he has a sweet tooth, sokka sometimes tries to bribe aang with sweet treats to let him borrow appa for the day
- aang knows how to play a few musical instruments (mainly flute and mandolin)
- him, sokka and zuko have a consistent bet running on whether or not katara will pick a fight with a fire nation official during a meeting. She always does, currently sokka has made the most money out of this bet
- aang and toph often have sparring matches to get rid of pent up rage, toph beats his ass every time
- i've said this a million times before but aang swears like a sailor. #Let Aang Swear 2023.
- the tlok official art of adult team avatar already kind of confirmed this but i imagine when Aang hit puberty he just grew like a fucking beanstalk. Like as an adult he's just massively tall for no reason and Sokka was seething at it for a good 5 years til he got over it.
- aang and katara don't actually enter a long term relationship at age 12 & 14 respectively. Instead they realize it was a bit stupid to start out that young and they both go through their respective journeys when it comes to love, only for their romance to be rekindled once they're 20 & 22.
- aang isn't just a good dancer, he's amazing at it.

WIP Wednesday
A bit of a character study/me skipping ahead/dynamic fun stuff etc?
This is so far down the line for the price x single!mom verse it's not even funny, but I wanted to write it out and see how I feel about it when we actually get to this point in the fic. John goes a wee bit off the fucking deep end :)
Y'all know the drill! No pressure, feel free to post a snippet of something you're working on.
“You won’t always be around, you know.” Michael has apparently decided he’s not partial to being above ground anymore.
The smoke from John’s cigar coils in him before he exhales slowly. Realistically he knows that Love is a sore spot for him and he’s willing to do anything for her, and yet he’s still caught off guard by the depth of the rage that washes over him in an all consuming fire.
“Would you like to clarify that for me?” Wouldn’t want to go flying off the handle after all if this is simply a misunderstanding.
“You talk a lot of shit for a guy who fucks off the second your phone rings. That clarify things for you? I don’t know what you or the blonde did to fuck with those results, but I know Sam is my fucking kid and I’ll be damned if you twats are going to get in my way.”
As Michael throws down his inane gauntlet, John exhales his now-final drag on the cigar, eyes flicking across his surroundings to gauge who is looking.
The man sure has a knack for picking the worst fucking spot to threaten the family of a man whose job is to work outside the constraints of red tape. They’re just secluded enough that Kate can see them if she looks but no one else can. And Kate certainly won’t give a fuck about what John’s about to do.
Without doubt, John knows that Michael expects to buffalo his way through this conversation and stalk off feeling he’s done something. Because the average citizen cannot do what John is about to- wouldn’t even consider it.
It’s the sheer confidence that John won’t put his hands on Michael that lets him snatch the other man up by his collar and shove him further out of sight from any prying eyes.
He opens his mouth to protest John’s grip on him, the perfect opportunity for him to shove the smoldering end of his cigar into the man’s mouth.
John has just enough impulse control to not extinguish the damn thing on the back of his throat, settling for the knowledge that the flurry of movement has knocked the ash loose into the other man’s throat.
“I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page before we have this little talk,” John snarls. “I can be on the other side of the world and it doesn’t fucking matter, am I clear? If I catch wind of you sniffing around when you think I’m distracted, you’re going to find out exactly what I am capable of for a guy who fucks off the second his phone rings.”
John pulls out the cigar and shoves the other man away from him. “If we have to have this conversation again, I’ll be shoving the barrel of my service weapon in your mouth next and painting the fucking walls, understood? There will be a point where I decide you’re more hassle alive than dead.”
He’s not mollified in the slightest by the way Michael’s legs shake and he suddenly can’t look John in the eye- all the bravado sucked out of him with the realization that John is not beholden to the same rules he is.
“You’re fucking insane,” he sputters, hunching over and trying to cough up the ash.
“If you’ve got any sense to you, you’ll stay off my shit list.” John advises before tossing the remains of the cigar in the bin.
“Now if you’ll excuse me- I’m taking the missus and the rugrat out for lunch.”

What are some random headcanons about Janis you have?
HOHOOO DUDE YOU CAME TO THE RIGHT PERSON
disclaimer these are all based on the musical version of her and from a list i made to base her personality off of before i started writing in 2021 so some have changed and whatnot anyhoo
-she met regina in ballet class when they were three. they went to the same preschool too (but different elementary schools)
-the ‘on wednesdays we wear pink’ also started in preschool
-she started working out in her senior year for the SOLE purpose of clocking bigots with as much force as possible
-her dad died when she was four (i haven’t included it in any of my fics but he died from some heart disease kinda shit bc why not)
-she’s GREAT at english, okay at history and piss poor at math and science
-in college she starts dyeing the blonde bits of her hair funky colors with temporary dye and then just before she graduates she cuts it all off and has shoulder-length hair for a solid 10 years lol
-she reads about alien conspiracy theories in her spare time
-she has a WILD sweet tooth
-she’s clumsy AF
-her dad was french so she actually speaks french fluently but pretends not to so she can stay in an easier class (and also stay in damian’s class)
-she’s lactose intolerant
-she refuses to acknowledge this
-she sent flowers to regina after the bus without putting her name on them
-she and kevin have a secret handshake
-she steals damian’s and cady’s jackets a lot, most of the time without realizing. and cady’s doesn’t fit so she uses it as a blanket most of the time
-she’s terrified of needles so she gets all her tattoos and piercings on impulse when she gets random bouts of courage
-she’s secretly kind of a horse girl
-the blonde hair used to be all blonde bc she dyed it when she was plastic but now it’s grown out and she just plays it off as part of her lewk ✨✨
-she’s wildly claustrophobic
-afraid of lots of little stupid things (geese, nougat, etc)
-likes horror movies bc they make her feel tough
-her birthday is october 17 :3
-she does yarn crafts (like knitting and crochet and cross stitch and shit) to get her angries out bc stabby stabby

I really hate the way a lot of people on here discuss the batfam because it seems to only revolve around entirely ignoring the existence of female characters while stealing their traits to impose upon male characters and taking whatever details they DO know about male characters to place them in a state of perpetual victimhood and call it "representations of the female experience" as though there could be nothing else to what being a woman is outside of victimhood. As though there aren't any actual female characters who could represent it better.
A lot of it stems from you guys not actually reading the comics you're talking about and saying "fanon is fun" when really all most of you do is perpetuate plotlines and characteristics added in for a couple chapters that seem to only have the common characteristic of being written by and for bigots! Why not just create OC's so you don't have to blindly cosign prejudice for the sake of create "angst" and perfect victims?

something something the owl house has a theme of conformity and how so many of the characters feel pressured to conform to environments that don’t support them and make them feel uncomfortable and not valid in their interests and personality, something something about how philip is a prime example of how conformity can completely ruin a person and fill them with so much self loathing and ruin their lives where instead of embracing their true selves and being surrounded by people who support them they are forced to hate it and destroy it.
