Another day/week/hour of accumulating thoughts which haven't marinated enough.

That Zzinu guy (I can't remember his actual name) is really hanging out with everyone relevant in the industry, he's everywhere 👀 I saw him with RM on IG and at some concert, had no idea they were buddies.

Why did Jungkook come back just for a few days? What was that damn urgent to fly to Seoul only to go back to US in no time? I thought someone would enlist, but nope.

I took the bus downtown twice today instead of calling for a car. I have to stop being delusional and accept that I'm not rich.

I'm not gonna write a review of Tedros' album cause I don't feel there's a point, but I do have like a few things to say. Why is it being talked about like he started working on Layover 3 years ago? I mean, he started working on music, yes, but this thing that came out? That's like some team who probably put together the music a lot more recently. But hey, I'm just babbling so what the fuck do I know? Slow Dancing sounds good. I mean, nice enough to have it in the background in a playlist. All the songs feel too short, like they're some samples and they just decided to release them that way. Since his contribution was mostly singing the actual songs, it feels like he gave Min Hee Jin a pinterest board of who is Taehyung and from that entire thing, she created the Kim Taehyung artiste aesthetic. It's her vibe all over it. Just as it's her entire shtick all over NewJeans. It screams more MHJ than the actual idols.

I tried so hard in the past 30 min to stop myself from being bitchy, but I can't help it. To those who think that they got out of the jikook cult and now they're smarter and feel the need to still use the tag to post their bullshit? Wake up, you're still in a cult, you just switched to another. Absolutely pathetic. I wish I could fuck with pjms cause I admire the way they stand up for Jimin and they're like the most organized fanbase. But the moment they started using cult/tkkr narative and making Jimin sound like a puppet, I just knew they're not better. And a sign that I cannot affiliate myself to any group in this fandom, I'm riding on my own like I always have.

You know what's ironic though? Jikookers are basically the only ship fandom within bts who since the beginning and especially in the latest years, should have just sat back and relax cause they're so damn privileged. No other pair in bts is giving what dumb and dumber (I call them that with all my love) are doing together, but there's not a day in which I don't see stupid anons or jikookers fighting and bringing arguments. Waste of time!

And in that vein, pjms would only have to learn from their god damn classy bias who is no doormat and act accordingly. Fight for him without acting so damn stupid. In terms of artistry, he's the best out there out of this group and others in his generation. Isn't that fucking cool? And look at his behavior. Let army and kpop stans get frustrated thanks to Jimin's achievements and how you can contribute to that, not using the same foul language which only trashy stans are using. Do better ffs. Fix that attitude. And stop believing you know Jimin's brain and soul inside out. No one does. It only makes you sound like any other delusional kpop stan.

Key's Good & Great is out. I only had time to watch the mv once during actual work hours (fitting) and I can't get into anh details, but I liked the idea of workaholism tied to a simulation. There's tons of layers and stuff to be analyzed there, perhaps some other time.

Chrissy Cunningham, Edissy and Grace Van Dien

I don't usually make long text posts on here - hopefully I will make more about awesome female characters in the future - but I feel this situation requires it.

There are spoilers under the cut.

First off, I really liked Chrissy Cunningham as a character when she appeared. A lot of people did, and a large part of that is the actress making her so likeable. I assumed we were going for the bitchy head cheerleader stereotype when they introduced her, but I was wrong. She was really sweet, kind and had immediate chemistry with Eddie.

Obviously, the actors (Joseph Quinn and Grace Van Dien) made their characters so amazing and their acting made the characters have undeniable chemistry. Whether you see that as platonic chemistry or romantic chemistry, it's undeniable that it's there. The scenes they shared were wonderful and I actually got very attached to Chrissy in the short time we had with her.

Now, I ship 'Edissy' (Eddie x Chrissy) and I shipped them immediately. However I understand that some people see them as platonic and see a friendship there, which I totally understand. We don't all ship the same things. I also ship 'Steddie' (Steve x Eddie), and I love both those ships. They're great.

What is NOT great is the fact that a lot of people within the Stranger Things fandom - most of whom seem to ship Steddie as well - seem to think it's okay to post nasty and hateful things about Chrissy, Edissy and Grace herself. A lot of them have even sent Grace hateful messages on social media and genuinely made her fear going to conventions because she's worried about in person hate.

They are also claiming that Edissy is paedophilia because Eddie is around 19/20 and Chrissy is 17/18. They are both SENIORS, which means they are around the same age and even though Eddie has been kept behind a couple of years, he's still a teenager, like Chrissy. That age gap is NOT PROBLEMATIC and if you think it is, you need to log off the internet and go the fuck outside into the real world.

Edissy is a perfectly fine and valid ship, as is Steddie. If you don't ship it, awesome. Just move on with your life and don't harass people who do.

Moving on from people being gross about the ship, the fact that some of you think it's okay to harass and bully the actress who plays Chrissy on social media because you've decided you don't like the ship is vile and horrific. And a lot of people doing that are

a) super weird Steddie shippers who remind me of the horrible Lokius shippers in the Loki/MCU fandom who harass Sophia Di Martino for playing a female character that 'gets in the way' of their white mlm ship and

b) obsessed Eddie Munson/Joseph Quinn stans, who, a lot like the Tom Hiddleston stans in the Loki fandom (who send hate to Zawe Ashton, Tom's real life fiancée, as well as Sophia), or Robert Pattinson stans in The Batman/Twilight fandom (who send hate to Suki Waterhouse, Rob's irl girlfried, and a lot of whom seem to hate BatCat and Zoe Karvitz), seem to hold up their favourite purest bestest boy fictional character and the actor who plays him, but hates any woman who is close to him irl or in the shows/movies they're in, and seems to think they have some weird claim over them

You DO NOT have ANY CLAIM over a fictional character NOR THE ACTOR WHO PLAYS HIM.

The fact that you all have decided to bully and harass and young woman over a fictional romance that NEVER happened (both ships guys, BOTH ships) and are insinuating that the friendship between real people (the actors) is fake because you can't handle a a woman being friends with a man you see as your possession, is absolutely disgusting and you are all scum.

Also, so much of it stems from misogyny, and what's worse is that a lot of the people hurling this misogynistic abuse are other WOMEN. That is vile. It disgusts me. Women are people, and male/female ships are VALID. Also, the fact that you only harass the ACTRESSES in these situations tells so much. You all still see women (other women for many of you) as obstacles to what you want and as lesser then you. Go and revaluate your misogyny, internalised or not.

Also, while I'm here, all the people crying about Eddie being queer - you do realise bisexual and pansexual people exist? As well as a wealth of other sexualities where it's possible to love/be attracted to more then ONE gender. People in male/female relationships CAN BE QUEER. Eddie can like Chrissy AND Steve. It's possible.

Anyway, I got distracted. Chrissy is a wonderful character, Edissy is a great ship (romantic or platonic) and Grace Van Dien seems like a lovely young woman.

If you have been hateful towards Grace, or any other female actor, for playing a female character that you perceive as 'stealing' a male actor/character you like, or as 'getting in the way' of your gay ship? YOU ARE THE ONE WITH THE PROBLEM. You need to work on yourself and your misogyny and you need to leave social media and stop harassing real people.

I am ashamed to ship Steddie because so many abusive people ship it too and have decided that this is the 'superior' ship and they need to harass people who ship a different ship or need to harass the actress who plays one part of the other ship. I'm also ashamed to love Eddie Munson as a character because so many hardcore Eddie 'stans' (who also obsess over Joseph Quinn) are also being abusive towards Edissy shippers and Grace as well.

I adore Chrissy, and Grace, and I ship Edissy. I needed to say that. And the rest of it needed to be said.

To all those antis, haters, whatever you call yourselves. If you've harassed and bullied Grace or anyone on social media for liking Chrissy or Edissy, I wish the worst fates on you. Grow up, put down your phone and go and revaluate yourself and how you think.

The Book of Job chapter 6

Job offers a rebuttal

So Job is not nearly as angry with Eliphaz as I was. I guess Job is too tired to be angry. Instead he disputes the notion that G-d will punish him for what he's saying. He's already destroyed. What is G-d going to do to him? Killing him would be a mercy at this point.

I would be much less poetic to the "happy is the man who God reproves". Certainly I wouldn't be talking about calamity heavier than the sands on the sea and arrows of the Almighty in me.

This might prove more difficult than I thought. There's a LOT of great poetry in this book (even in the not terribly poetic JPS translation). I am reminded of my Theater History class in college where we got to Hamlet and everyone just started talking about how much they loved the poetry. Like every other work we could talk about themes, characters, staging, etc. But Hamlet just hypnotized everyone and the professor noted that almost every class has very little to say about Hamlet when they are first introduced. Which is weird since there is way MORE to say about Hamlet than Oedipus Rex or the Revenger's Tale.

His words go from general to specific. He notes that only the suffering cry out. Then goes back to the "If only God would destroy me" before pointing out that his friends are useless. Worse than useless. Sure first he compares them to melting ice, but then he goes "do you devise words of reproof but count a hopeless man's words as wind? You would even cast lots over an opran, or barter away your friend."

But continually he is going "tell me that I'm wrong"

So this is getting long, but today I was reminded of a particular noxious individual that I considered a friend before Obama won and then still considered a friend until the fact that every time I said hello he just glared at me. I later learned that he told mutual friends about how much he hated me. He was always a creepy dude so I wasn't terribly concerned about him cutting ties with me, but he founded a publishing company and his family still runs it so it's annoying that he publishes some cool Jewish books that I would love to buy if I wasn't giving that mamzer money.

Anyhow on the way home, I looked him up to see what he's been doing. Jumping from job to job. Had a time as a pulpit rabbi (left after a year so probably molesting some congregants) and a lot of articles about how abortion is murder complete with taking that Project Veritas "abortion" video at face value.

I found his LinkedIn account (I swear it only took 10 minutes to look all this stuff up) and saw that he responded to a post about how "Man, that's tough" being a good thing to say to someone being overwhelmed with a bitchy self-aggrandizing post about how he needs PRACTICAL ADVICE when he's feeling overhwhelmed. He even said that he's playing devil's advocate.

So I told him that he sounds like Eliphaz the Temanite (he's a rabbi so he should get the reference) and that I have advice for him, stop being a noxious lying little shit.

I'm not proud of myself for that.

But it's fascinating to see that this guy (who also used to post articles on Facebook about how you should be EMOTIONALLY STRONG) is still about as knowledgeable about human emotions as he was back when he was the glaring asshole of Washington Heights.

Oh shit. It's not even about him. It's about another friend who just sent me an email inviting me to her philosophy group at Columbia. We haven't talked since she went off the deep end stanning for the CCP.

Oh. Damn.

Anyhow. Job is wondering why his friends have nothing to help him beyond reproof and bullshit statements like "happy is the man who God reproves" And as a reader, I'm wondering why these guys are acting that way.

But I miss a friend and because I can't really talk to her and there's really no way I see us ever being friends again, I look up a shitty dude that I never liked that much in the first place.

Can you believe I write term papers for a living? One thing I have over ChatGPT is the fact that I'll never start throwing in these personal asides.

What I Read in September 2022

NOVELS/LIGHT NOVELS:

The Executioner and Her Way of Life Vol. 1

I can't really summarize this one without spoiling the first twist, unfortunately, so no summary for this one. However, it's an isekai and it's a yuri. I've wanted to read this one for a while, and a friend (@cronchadile follow them for great art!!) ended up giving me a copy by pure chance.

I LOVED it. I knew the first twist going in, but the second got me SO HARD. I was HOOKED. If you're at all interested in light novels/isekai/yuri, you gotta check this book out. So good.

Kuma Kuma Bear Vol. 1

Another light novel oTL. A girl who's a genius shut-in gets isekai'd into her favorite game, the twist being that the only gear she has is a bear onesie. My standards going in were rock-bottom, but this was pretty funny.

MANGA/COMICS:

Arata, The Legend by Yuu Watase

A completely forgettable isekai/shonen thing.

Can't Stop Cursing You by Kensuke Koba

I've never read or watched Death Note, but I have been around anime-watching teens for the majority of my life at this point, and so I feel fairly confident making a Death Note comparison here. A charismatic high-school boy with a hidden dark side makes a contract with a curse god in order to carry out murders easily. Unfortunately for him, his biology teacher is an undercover curse-killing investigator.

This was a really fun one! I enjoyed it a lot. Lots of fun exaggerated faces, and I'm pretty terrible at picking up on foreshadowing sometimes, so the twists managed to get me (if you are better, you might see them coming). I'm excited to read more.

Cherry Magic: Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You A Wizard Vol. 5

A BL about a guy who has the thing in the title happen to him, and one of his coworkers. This story is sweet, and can be pretty funny. The drama in this volume was good, but I do hope the story is close to the end, honestly, because I'm not sure how much longer I wanna see it go on.

Eniale and Dewiela by Kamone Shirahama

A devil and an angel are bitchy besties. And Kamome Shirahama's art is beautiful. Would recommend.

Manly Appetite: Minegishi Loves Otsu by Mito, Vols. 1-3

Read this bc overweight character rep and it is solidly fine. A salaryman BL romance.

Heaven's Design Team Vols. 1-2

A manga I got on a whim because they had the first volumes at HPB. A team of designers fulfill the requests of God and create animals. Enjoyable! I like comedy manga, and this is a pretty good one of those, with very pretty art.

Phantom of the Idol Vol. 2

This is a deep and meaningful manga about the ability to stan two different musical acts. Okay, so maybe it's not deep. An idol who died and came back as a ghost haunts a guy who's an idol but sucks at it. The comedy in this manga genuinely makes me laugh aloud, and I like the character dynamics a lot.

The Other World's Books Depend on the Bean Counter Vol. 2

This is a very fun BL Isekai manga, where a salaryman is sucked along in an isekai event with a teenage girl (who was the intended target.) I really love this manga. It's funny and sexy and the main characters intrigue me.

Witch Hat Atelier Vol. 3 by Kamome Shirahama

Another volume of Witch Hat Atelier! This is still a beautiful and charming manga about a girl at witch school. Always lovely.

The Sandman: Preludes and Nocturnes written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Sam Keith, Mike Dringenberg, Malcolm Jones III

Look, it's pretty obvious why I read this one, right? The titular Sandman is trapped by an Occult group for 70 years, and after escaping, must reestablish himself. It's PHENOMENAL. We actually started watching the show, and bounced off it, but man, the comic...Can't wait to read more. I really love the subtle twinges of the DC universe.

That's all for September! Kinda an oops, all manga this time, but that's okay. Guess I just gotta read War and Peace in the back-half of October to make up for that.

You winced at the pain of foundation touching the sensitive bruise on your neck. Your boyfriend, Dylan, had too much to drink and put his hands on you last night. This wasn't the first time he'd done this, it was nearly everyday that this would happen.

Even though Dylan treated you terrible, you always took him back. You two were always in the media for arguing in public; one time it was because you were driving drunk.

Your dad, Sebastian, was always concerned, but you would lie. You would say that it was all rumors. It didn't mean that your MCU family wasn't concerned either.

You had been part of the cast since you were casted to play Silk in Captain America: Civil War.

You and Dylan arrived at your dad's house for the cast dinner he'd planned.

"Hi Daddy" you said as you gave your Dad hug and a kiss on the cheek.

"Hi Sweetie, Dylan" Sebastian responded, hugging you back. "Dinners almost ready, and Tom and everyone else are on there way. Go make yourself at home."

Thinking that everyone wasn't gonna come for a while, you decided to show Dylan your old room.

After that, you both went back to the living room. It wasn't long until the cast arrived.

Elizabeth, Paul, Anthony, Paul Rudd, Robert, Tom Holland, Chris Evans, Scarlett, Chris Hemsworth, and Jeremy Renner, had all showed up.

"Hi everyone" you greeted them. "Tommy" you and Tom gave each other a hug.

You and Tom have been friends since Civil War. Everyone on the cast had thought that you two would get together, but you guys kept telling them that it was strictly platonic.

"How's Dylan? You haven't talked about him for a while" Tom asked.

"He's doing great, actually he's like right behind me, on the couch" You answered.

The cast were never liked Dylan, they didn't think you guys should have gotten together. Every time they brought up arguments caught in the news, you would change the subject.

You didn't think it was there place to tell you who you should or shouldn't be with. In the end, everyone else was correct, and you hadn't realized it.

You all gathered around the dinner table and sat down.

You sat between Dylan and Tom, and Dylan was right next to Robert.

"I brought wine, who wants some?" Chris E said.

"I'd like some wine please" you spoke, holding up your glass.

"Me too" Dylan held his glass up also.

"You can't have any Dylan, one of us has drive" you told him.

"I thought that you were gonna drive" Dylan responded.

There it goes, beginning of your next argument. In front if everyone.

"You always do this, Dylan. You always have to be the one that gets drunk and I'm the one that drives us home." You argued with him.

"Because you always act so bitchy when I drink at home." Dylan's eyes were filled with anger.

"You really want to do this in front of everyone." You got up from your seat at the table, "I'm going to the car."

You left the table and Dylan quickly followed after you. You barely made it to the car before Dylan grabbed your wrist.

"What the fuck is your problem, Y/N?" He yelled at you.

"What's my problem?" You looked at Dylan with anger in your eyes. "Everytime my dad invites us for dinner, you always argue with me."

You pulled your arm out of his grip. You checked your wrist to see if he left any marks. Luckily, he didn't.

The car ride home was silent, and that was a good thing. You were sure that if one of you were to say a single word, then another argument would start.

"We need to talk at some point" Dylan spoke, breaking the peaceful silence.

"Talk about what? The fact that once we get home you're gonna choke me" you said, calling him out about the way he treats you.

"I said I wasn't gonna do that anymore, remember." Dylan put the car in park and got out.

You followed him out and into your house. You slammed the front door and threw your purse and jacket on the couch.

"You said that yesterday, and the day before that, and the day be-" you were cut off by Dylan grabbing your shoulders and pushing you to the floor.

You quickly got up and slapped him. Dylan punched you in the face and you punched him back.

You were tackled down onto the couch. Dylan's hands wrapped around your throat.

"Stop acting like a little bitch" Dylan started to say. He started muttering cuss words under his breath.

"Stop, y-you're hurting me" you said very weakly as you tried to break free of his grip.

Dylan let you go and you ran to your bedroom. You locked the door. You looked in the mirror and saw a bruise on your face and a small one on your left shoulder.

You walked over to the mini fridge that was in the room and grabbed an ice pack for your face and a bottle whiskey that you kept in there just in case.

"What am I gonna tell everyone?" You asked yourself, holding the ice pack to your face.

The bruise on your face was gonna be to hard to cover up and it would hurt more in the morning then it does right now.

You took a drink of your whiskey until your realized that you were completely fucked

You walked out the front door of your place, passing Dylan on the way out. You made Dylan sleep on the couch last night after your fight.

You were rushed with paparazzi and didn't have your sunglasses to hide your face. One of the reporters noticed your face.

"Y/N! Y/N! Is it true that you and Dylan hits you?" The reporter asked

You ignored all of them and kept walking to your car.

"I'm fucked" you said to yourself before driving away

That’s it. That’s the post. Pack it up everybody, we just cracked the case and cleared up one of the most compelling fights in the PJO fandom since forever. Good job everybody, clap it out and there’s the door! Don’t forget ordering the drinks at Starbucks, Mitch! They’re on me!

Okay, but on a more serious note: YES. YES EXACTLY.

And before some of you roll your eyes or grab your pitchforks – put your biases aside and hear me out for once. I like Annabeth. She’s my in my top three characters only second to Percy himself. I love Percabeth. It’s my favorite ship in the entire series and to be frank, the only ship that I care about PJO wise. Hell, I spend my time creating my own headcanons or writing my own fanfics with Percabeth being the star in them.

But that is not to say that I’m unable to see how certain things have developed over the years or where they stand now in regard to Annabeth. I’m not here to ignore things that have been said and/or done due to or in the name of Annabeth and I’m not here to vilify anyone that doesn’t like her. And I’m here to admit that I’m guilty of some of the things that may be addressed in this meta essay that you will read in just a second. However, I try my best to assure you, that I’m for once able to recognize my own bias.

Warning: a monster essay lies right upon you.

This should count as a paper of its own.

Back to the statement on top: I would go out even further to reframe your claim, anon:

Annabeth Chase is a good character but not a nice or pleasant person.

Annabeth is a wonderful character but she isn’t a nice one. Or at least not nice to everyone. She is (construction wise if I dare say) the best character out of the series. She has her positive traits (she’s caring, she’s emotional, she’s encouraged and volunteers, she fights for what she believes in, she forgives (even if doing so begrudgingly)) but she also has her negative traits (she’s stubborn, she’s brash, changing her mind takes forever, she is prejudiced, she baits others). That balances things out. She is branded as the intelligent kid but does irrational things (like I’ve just said a) she’s a kid and b) she’s not a robot). She should probably know better, but we all make mistakes and hopefully grow and learn from them. The clouds in the sky do blur and cover our visions sometimes.

Annabeth had clashes with other characters or was about to have fights due to her stubbornness or jealousy (Rachel, Reyna, etc.) and has of course her problems with the mortal world and her family but she also found new friends, some things cleared up throughout the narration and she was/is quite popular in Camp Half-Blood.

The thing is: she doesn’t have to be nice or pleasant (as a character). Or at least not all the time. Her character is humanized. That is what or who she is. Human. She does stand out as a character, not just because she’s the (future) love interest. She feels like someone you could meet in real life and either adore from the top to the bottom or declare as your biggest enemy. And that’s totally okay if you lean either way – liking or disliking her. Or even feeling indifferent about her. Also great!

To say that she has been the best character that Riordan has crafted is easy to say, because she has been sculpted after Riordan’s wife. He had a model he could rub some of real-life events or traits on. That’s not the problem. The problem truly doesn’t lie on Riordan’s side for the most part for once.

The problem is inherently on the fandom’s side. What the fandom does, how it acts and how it treats Annabeth as a character is the problem. The problems vary but it’s mostly the mischaracterization of Annabeth, starting fights and fan/ship wars, internalized misogyny (in some cases) and how some of the Annabeth stans lash out (ha, got firsthand experience in that field among many of my friends and mutuals!). There is a reason why many people are wary of people that have Annabeth or Percabeth related URLs.

The fact that we see Annabeth mostly through Percy’s lens and (until the Heroes of Olympus saga hits) we never really see her in chill everyday situations is essentially Riordan leaving the back door of the house open, ready for all of you asshats to rob his mansion in Boston. Because a frame on a character means that we don’t get to see the character in its entirety (unlike we do with Percy in PJO for the most part). That means a bunch of stuff is left open for interpretation which is the reason why Annabeth gets so many polarized headcanon and opinions tossed around. I think that is one of the true appeals of Annabeth. You can add on stuff and it necessarily doesn’t have to contradict itself.

We have people calling her abusive due to a (n admittedly stupid and unnecessary) judo flip and we have people that act like she’s never done anything wrong. People sorta use this excuse to form and shape Annabeth however they want and distort her characterization.

People in the fandom act like Annabeth is some weird prized possession. We perceive Annabeth mostly through the eyes of others (Percy, Apollo, etc.) and when we had some sort of insight in her ways (MOA, HOH) it felt… weird? Somewhat? Like Riordan left two bullet points of her characterization and told the ghostwriter: aight, fuck it up, gringo, see you on Tuesday and greet Fred the next time you see him for me.

There have been many posts lately (by Tharini, Simi, Sawasawako, Jewishpercy and Annie I believe?) that HOO Percabeth felt weird. That they felt weirdly constructed, that there was no conflict, no growth. It felt stagnating, like we’re turning back. We had five books prior where we had Annabeth and Percy slowly shifting from disliking to liking and crushing each other. True development. And when we finally got the cake it felt… dissatisfying. Like the cheap box stuff and not the delicious exquisite taste that we were promised.

I said it previously in my Percabeth ship roast, but let me repeat myself: many Percabeth related things are straight up fanon. Some of it is very old fanon so that’s been unable to distinguish unless you’ve read the books recently and subtract nearly 99,9% of things you see on Tumblr (and occasionally the other shitty parts of the fandom like Reddit, IG, Twitter. Although they mostly steal and recycle tumblr stuff oh well. But back to the topic).

The way people treat Annabeth is so strange. She’s either an innocent fluffy smush baby that’s never harmed a fly and all that she wants for Christmas is being Percy’s lapdog or she’s the devil incarnate, broke into your house, killed your parents Batman style, kicked your puppy and didn’t flush the toilet on the way out. I think this is what mostly makes people hate her or the ship Percabeth. And both extremes are wrong and right at the same time? She is multifaceted so both stereotypes are true and untrue and sorta cancel each other out in the same way.

The true reason why people dislike Annabeth is because the stans are doing the most. (The haters as well, don’t get me wrong, but oh boy. Piss of a stan and you’ll know what I mean). That isn’t inherently new. Are you guys old enough to remember the ship wars that have happened cross platform? Perachel vs. Percabeth? Oh boy, oh boy. I saw some kids on tumblr a few months ago trying to infiltrate both tags and start shit (and also fail). The fact that Rachel still gets used as the bitchy (ex) girlfriend in fanfics? It’s 2020 guys. I know this apocalyptic year is far from perfect and over but I think we can let this trope die, right? Right? I thought we’ve established that Rachel is a pretty chill charcter by now… right?

If you posted your stuff on FFN back in 2010-2013 and it wasn’t the typical cutesy Percabeth story (Goode High, the gods read TLT, punk/prep Percabeth, college AU, etc.) people would’ve come for your fucking throat. Not because the story or the narration was shit. But because the pairing wasn’t Annabeth and Percy (in the sense that Annabeth had to be paired with Percy. I mean Percy gets shipped with everyone and their mother but for Annabeth it was strictly Percy. As annoying as this whole Connabeth thing is – the people behind it actually had a point. She never had a different love interest unless it’s a Percy centered story and he goes off dating Athena, Artemis and Zoe at the same time for some odd reason. Yeah, FFN Percy ships are something). Or it wasn’t the action filled canon compliant story or it wasn’t an AU that was popular.

People were really stubborn, snobbish and wanted their stuff in the four five boxes that were the most popular ones and that’s it. People have been bullied off the site in many fandoms, so it’s not a PJO-only thing but it’s still sad that it happened. (Off-note: most of these FFN tropes are still alive and well and thriving on AO3. Don’t be so snobbish and pretend that every piece you’d find there is a holy grail. There’s a lot of trash you have to waddle through. Same with Wattpad, Tumblr or anywhere else where fanfics get posted. Also had this discussion with Annabeth stans. Sigh).

And Tumblr back then? Forget it, wasn’t much better.

That view has sorta changed (at least for people that have been in the fandom for several years or have managed to find a way to navigate through it) but some of the negative sentiment from back in the day has survived. Be it by new fans coming in or from old fans that never let their stance die. The aggression feels differently and somewhat not. (I don’t know if the anon function had been abused that much back in the day. I was an observer not a participant in the fandom).

Crack a joke at Annabeth’s expense (Kal’s famous “Annabeth is a Republican” post or Dee Dee’s and many others “Annabeth has the education of a second grader, chill with the college plans, girlie” stance) and you have people insulting you, making callout posts, unfollowing and blocking you (based on only that? Okay, honey), making aggressive counter-posts, etc. in a minute. If you respond with “It’s a joke, it’s not real” you have a 50/50 chance of either getting blown off or embarrassing them so that they apologize for once.

This isn’t just about jokes. You can make a headcanon that’s not the cozy cute convenient mainstream saga and people would react the same way. Or art piece (no, not including the whole Tannabeth Blackchase shtick done by Viria and others) or fanfics.

People project so much onto the unfinished canvas that is Annabeth Chase that any form of negative sentiment as little as someone not liking her to straight up criticism, regardless of how tiny it may be, seems like an affront. Like an invitation to a fight. Like an insult to them, their character, everything they believe in. Let me state something:

You are NOT Annabeth Chase. Annabeth Chase IS NOT you. Annabeth Chase is NOT real. Her feeling cannot be hurt. Someone criticizing, disliking, joking about her or even insulting her will not bother her. Someone making a statement about her is not an insult to YOU.

Let me repeat that:

Annabeth Chase isn’t real. Annabeth Chase isn’t you.

So think a little before you act? I get it when you’re a kid and new to fandoms or haven’t been up with fan cultures in the past and are back in the scene. But if you’re in your late teens or even older as an adult and you’re unable to understand that you aren’t what you like – you aren’t the extension of a fictional character – I feel incredibly sorry for you. Because that’s just incredibly sad. Someone disliking something you like isn’t an attack of your character. It shows you that you are you and the other person is a human just like you. That they just have different taste. Disliking something you like isn’t a crime, you know? But me feeling sorry for the way some of y’all act won’t mean that that’s even remotely okay. Especially if you’re no longer in the intended audience for PJO age wise and should know better.

This isn’t a “white stans” only thing. I’ve seen and witnessed firsthand how people of color, mainly women of color, act the same or not even worse when it comes to her character. People have projected their problems and real-life occurring events into her character (I’m sure that she isn’t the only character nor that this is the only fandom where this is happening) and in some cases like I’ve said cannot separate their own personality from the fictional world. Fights with woc happened because of Annabeth fucking Chase. So many things have happened in the fandom the past few months, mostly due to people being forced staying at home because of the quarantine but I’d say it’s 10% on quarantine and 90% on people for acting up like this.

So here’s a little story: There was the act of Riordan blowing the fandom up because of his own stupidity and being unable to apologize for his mischaracterization and lack of research (the whole Piper fiasco) back in June (?) and admits the upset fandom, people on Twitter, Tumblr and Discord legit thought that none of that mattered and that the outcry was destroying Annabeth Chase’s birthday. That’s right. People thought that Annabeth Chase’s non-existing birthday because she’s a fictional character had a higher priority than the rupture and prevalent racism in the fandom. Okay. This isn’t a great look, Annabeth stans. And this of course pissed a lot of people off. I made a post about it and someone not only berated three other people on said post but no, we had a mighty argument which had disrupted many friendships in our circle which haven’t recovered until this very day. We both had our parts in it and no one is innocent. But the cause of this still remains Annabeth Chase or how people prioritize her non-existing well-being. Anyway. I’m getting agitated just thinking about it.

Let’s go back to the characterization thing with Annabeth. Let me remind you:

Annabeth Chase is an asshole. There I’ve said it in a post ages ago (too lazy to look it up, sorry) and I’ll say it again. And that’s not me insulting her. That’s me actually loving that about her. Annabeth is one of the very few unapologetic female characters that really showed all young readers across the world that you can be a girl, a badass, smart, strong, standing up for yourself and what you believe in. You don’t have to be nice. You don’t have to hide your feelings. You don’t need a man in all cases but it’s also okay to accept help and defeat.

A large reason why I think she’s an incredibly important character in children’s literature/YA because many other novels (mostly (sadly)) have the “Oh, I’m a white skinny dark-haired girl that likes unconventional things like READING. I’m not like the other girls, that take care of themselves and pamper themselves by enjoying shopping and wearing make-up. No, I’d rather be one of the boys but a sweet cute little boy and not the jock fuck that drank vodka shots out of a filthy shoe once. Despite me calling myself hideous every man in a 10-kilometer radius falls in love with me and tells me I’m oh so sexy and by the way I’m only 16 years old” shit going on for no goddamn reason.

Yes, I do blame Twilight for this mostly in recent years, but this trope isn’t by any means knew. Pretty sure that you could even use classics as Pride and Prejudice and dissect them in the same manner (Bold statement: Lizzy Bennet is the OG Bella Swan. There. Go fight somewhere in the corner, people). The new wave of YA focuses on girls belittling themselves and only starting to believe in themselves because someone else (mostly the male love interest) tells them they’re worth it. And these books hit the mainstream because they’re incredibly bland and picture perfect white.

With Annabeth it’s different. She shows up for the job and is done with it. (Brie Larson would probably be the perfect in real life version of her. You either like or dislike her. Or you really don’t care). That is what is so refreshing about her. Her unapologetic nature. Can it be off-putting? Yes. Is it annoying? Yes! Hell, every time I read The Lightning Thief, I want to rip her goddamn head off. And it’s just so well written. Her shift from mistrusting Percy but secretly still believing in him to her opening up. Wow, Riordan did something right there.

Annabeth Chase isn’t a young character. She has existed along with PJO for 15 years. She’s on her way to the second decade. I’m pretty sure that with the success of Percy Jackson (and Harry Potter) many lives have been warped and shaped.

But when I say the problem lies mostly in the fandom, it doesn’t mean that Riordan’s completely innocent. The only problem that I have with Annabeth lies not truly with her but the fact that Riordan is only able to produce three variations of female characters:

The sweetheart (Hazel, Silena, Calypso, Hestia)

The strong feminist (Annabeth, Piper, Thalia, Reyna, Artemis)

The bitch (Drew, nearly every female goddess in the goddamn Riordanverse next to every female monster)

And these female characters only know three endings:

End up married with a mortgage, three kids, two dogs and a cat somewhere in Connecticut by the age of twelve

Get dumped into the hunt

Chill on Mount Olympus and only come down to be a nuisance and/or give a cryptic message before going back and doing a godly rave party or something

We know Annabeth as the badass strong female first (or the bitchy character we’re supposed to actually like. Choose your approach), the blueprint so to speak, so some of the other characters feel almost pale in comparison and almost not needed? Doesn’t mean that other characters can’t behave similarly, but it feels kind of redundant especially if their character arcs end in a rather anticlimactic way (Thalia, Reyna). The new additions are the much needed woc as the main story with PJO was inherently white (anyway stan black!Percy and Grover, folks). So it’s not to bash on the new characters, it’s more Riordan’s fault more than anything.

Since Riordan only knows three female character arcs it feels like he tried to copy the formula several ways with different nuances. Some more or less successful. This is where fandom actually comes in handy and helps create more distinguished and fleshed out characters in form of headcanons or fanfiction.

But even in these cases people still make it about Annabeth when it’s time for characters of colors to shine. Remember that whole spiel and discussion that broke out when people (Kal, diver-up, Caitlyn, Bee, reynaisalesbian, etc.) joked about or criticized that Annabeth thinks that she’s having it harder because she’s a blonde? In front of Hazel and Piper? If she would’ve been a real person that’s an invitation for getting decked. And then all hell broke loose because Annabeth stans couldn’t accept the fact that in the real world and/or in fictional worlds the woc/coc have it harder? That the white woman wasn’t the victim that needed the coddling? Yeah, that was mad pathetic.

I hope you people get my point?

Well fuck. I wrote so many things and have the feeling I’ve said nothing. Anyway, I hope I made sense. This is way too long.

TLDR: Chill about Annabeth please. She’s an important character but that doesn’t mean that everyone has to like her, regardless of being a character in the books or a reader/fan of PJO in real life. She isn’t nice or a sweetheart all the time. She also isn’t the monstrous asshole that some try to make out of her.

Why does D agree to certain things? It’s probably because the alternative is worse but then I still don’t understand why he agreed to the sham. He could not have right? Idk what would have happened had he, but I feel anything is better than being married to her. All she does is ruin his reputation, and give him a straight image (to his team), so I genuinely wonder what image he wants for himself because if he didn’t go along with it, what else could they have painted him as that they haven’t already and continue to?

There are endless opinions on this, depending on who you ask. The m/iarren stans and the fans who believe that every message from D’s SM are actually from him will tell you that there was nothing to agree to because he loves her and wanted to marry her because he can’t live without her. They have a love that’s truer than true and are #couple goals. They are perfect for each other in every way and he adores her every breath and she’s just as devoted to him, which is why she follows him everywhere he goes. There’s nothing odd about the length of their relationship and the fact that no one involved in it can give you a consistent time frame. You ask 5 people how they met or when they started dating, you’ll get 5 different answers. All those pics of them together where she’s grabbing onto him and clutching at any limb within her reach are just her being affectionate. The fact that they sit like strangers on a subway during one part of an interview and when it’s noticed, the next part that’s released has both of them being all touchy feely is just coincidence. The dude bro slang and emoji filled posts are just him having fun and being spontaneous. They’re cheeky and silly. Its just him living his best life and there’s nothing forced or untoward about it. He loves only hanging out with her trashy besties and spending nights entertaining the masses in her piano baby/lifelong dream business that she can’t be bothered to promote or run while he accompanies her on the piano looking completely lifeless as she drunkenly butchers one of the 4 songs she knows and thinks she can sing. He’s just being a supportive partner when he talks about the awful branded merchandise from the strip bar during a tv segment that’s supposed to be about his career and then models it later on in a cute coupley pic where he looks like his soul has just left his body. Having her accompany his every move is just what married couples do or didn’t you know that? It’s not natural for one partner to do something without the other, especially if it’s career related. All celeb couples are joined at the hip once they officiate their own wedding. All celeb couples have a wedding - or a great party as it’s sometimes known as - that is corporate sponsored to within an inch of its life. All celeb couples who have one person say they didn’t want to be in a public relationship have a cover story done in Vogue magazine and then have their pr team make sure the link to that article is noted and shared in practically every print interview done for the other person for over a year. This is all completely normal behavior for a 100% believable couple.

There are no such things as contracts that dictate behavior and managers and pr teams don’t post things on their client’s behalf. Lavender relationships and marriages are a thing of the past. No one would dare impose something like that on a celeb in 2021. It must be nice to be that naive. Or sad. Mostly sad. If you believe that, then you haven’t been listening to the stories of celebs who’ve been closeted and decided to come out at the risk of their career. It’s a thousand times easier to market someone as straight - there’s no denying that. And when you’re young and just starting out, you have no leverage whatsoever and will go along with what people tell you to do. If you don’t, you don’t have a career. It’s as simple and evil as that. They hold all the cards and if you want to be a musician or an actor, you have to play by their rules. You sign a deal and before you know, everything has snowballed and you’re in so deep, you don’t know how to begin to climb out. Look at Taylor Swift and the mess she’s gone through with her songs and she’s one of the biggest singers on the planet. Whether you’re a fan or not, you know who she is. If she can’t get control over songs that she freaking wrote because of a shitty contract she signed when she was like 16 without massive amounts of legal issues, what hope do the people who are less famous have? Look at what D said about his lack of input on the evolution of Blaine’s hair and how he didn’t want to rock the boat. Something as simple as that and he didn’t feel like he could or should speak up. Now apply that same mentality to a legal document and think about how hard it would be to try to countermand any part of it, especially when you’re as young as he was then.

D’s team is particularly troublesome because they’re lazy and incompetent and have no interest in marketing him as he really is. The easy way out is the straight way out and that’s their lane. That’s the one they’ve chosen and they will ride that till the wheels fall off. Let’s be honest: D is all RR has. He’s going to milk every drop he can out of D while he can. There’s no celeb out there with an established career who’s considering new management who looks at D’s situation: the circus that is always around him, the garbage that’s posted on his SM in his name, the endless ads for things like ugly ass jewelry and a paid promo pic for a 5 star hotel in the Philippines from the group honeymoon (not a thing) that they crashed after D spent days sifting through garbage with women who live in abject poverty and will never make the kind of money that even a meal at that hotel would cost which totally makes him look awesome - and think “yes! This is what’s been missing all along. Where do I sign?” He’s not getting a free home reno and some TV time from the girl who played Luna in the HP movies and B/ecca T/obin - someone who played a forgettable and unremarkable bitchy blond cheerleader (def breaking the mold there, totally not a trope that can be found in every 80s high school movie or tv show) and now hosts a ridiculous podcast. So he’s going to push his own agenda and make sure that everyone knows his client is straight at every opportunity that’s presented and foist his bride in our faces at even more opportunities just in case it wasn’t clear because oh my god did you hear that D is straight? And he’s been dating this super cool rockstar woman since he was an embryo so there’s no way anything could have ever happened between him and someone else from this show he was on for a while. It wasn’t a big deal or anything. He had a small role and a love interest but they weren’t real popular. I mean if you’ve seen one gay teenage romance, you’ve seen them all. The show’s been over for 5 years and they’re hardly ever mentioned now so there’s no point in keeping them alive. It’s not a role that meant anything to him and it’s certainly not something he would want to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of. I wonder if he was allowed to do that as long as managed to shoehorn in a mention of his lovely ball and chain of many moons. Because that’s what always happens. Doesn’t matter what the topic at hand is - it always seems to come back around to her. And she just smirks and flashes her fake engagement ring at the camera and eats it up because he does all the work and she reaps all the rewards. Like RR, she’ll never give him up without a fight because what then? No one will write articles about what a badass she is. No one will be there to do free promo for her strip bar. No more red carpet pics or designer duds gifted to her. No more free trips to Europe or last minute weekend getaways with his stylist. No one will care about her super secret Instagram account and post pics from it that she’s forwarded over so they get picked up and pumped out to news blogs for maximum coverage. No more pics with actual famous people because who’s inviting a career less nobody to events? She’s a woman in her mid 30s who behaves like an 18 year old on spring break and thinks nothing of it. She doesn’t give a shit how her behavior reflects on D because she doesn’t care about him. All she cares about is what he can provide her and that’s secondhand fame, money, and the image of the best wife to ever wife. But if he was single, then there’d be even more questions about his sexual orientation than there are now and no way to refute anything. So we get this clusterfuck. What they fail to understand is that the harder they push, the more holes they create and the more distasteful this all becomes. I just want to be a fan of D. That’s all I want. But I can’t do that because he comes with a front and center “work family” that I can’t get away from.

I sometimes don’t know what he wants for himself image wise but I truly don’t think it’s this. The difference between in person D and SM D is too great for me to believe he’s really cool with all of it. I don’t know how many more times he has to say that he’s rarely on SM, which should be the reddest of red flags that most of the stuff posted is not coming from him. The fact that he’s taken to SM to rebuff things said in his name that are patently false and insulting reinforces that belief for me. He’s not perfect but he’s not the fake barely literate guy he’s portrayed as. I wouldn’t still be here if I thought that’s who he really was and I wouldn’t care at all about his personal life if it wasn’t shoved down my throat ad naseum.

Well this post kinda got away from me. 😊. I’m so very tired of all this and if I’m tired, D must be exhausted.

i hardly recognized you

dynasty was almost a sexy financial drama which i genuinely forget all the time until i rewatch it from the beginning of the series. i remember hearing about it pre-production because of being a liz gillies stan and i vaguely understood what the original dynasty soap opera was (but hadn’t watched it at that point) so when the first trailer was released / when i finally watched the first episode i was embarrassingly excited about it. not to be a ‘no show is improved by sex’ headass but i am still going to take a moment of silence for the business drama aspect that once was. i find myself rolling my eyes every time someone complains about how dynasty ‘used to be better’ because i still love it very much but rewatching it from the beginning is always wild because of just how different it is now. it’s touched on so many different genres and styles and moods over the last four-ish years that if you were to put, say, 1.01 and 4.22 beside one another you could probably convince me that i was watching two different shows (which makes the pilot title so much funnier).

one of my favorite things about rewatching season 1 is remembering how there was a time where the fandom was divided between shipping fallon with jeff or fallon with culhane - while i avoided shipping wars, i loved jeff. i haven’t gotten over incestgate. there were also a handful or so outliers that were like ‘i don’t know, maybe we should see what this liam guy is all about’ - by his second or third episode, that number had obviously multiplied itself over tenfold and he had already become the (majority) fan favorite. i was hardly interested in or impressed by liam and i will admit that i did not expect him to be sticking around.

while the spy work with disguises and wigs that make appearances later in the show are fun, i love looking back on a time when fallon was actively able to hide in plain sight - and did, on purpose. the political message wasn’t nearly as subtle or clever or groundbreaking as people sometimes liked to pretend it was, but the reminder that women are underestimated and therefore effective for corporate espionage was perfect the way that it was. i sort of wish that we’d gotten a few more seasons worth of examples of that. fallon being able to stand in a room full of her business rivals and have all of them assume she can’t keep up is a superpower of hers that i wish they’d kept in the stable plot-wise.

i miss steven so much on a daily basis if for no reason other than he and fallon are my favorite stereotypical gay son hoe daughter trope. their combined brand of bitchiness has always been so beyond, writing-wise, and there has never been a suitable replacement for steven’s half of that dynamic since. i also really love, as a sidenote, how much dynasty wanted to hammer home that since this show was more politically aware, steven would not be the victim of homophobia in his household - which ends up translating to him having a strained relationship with his father because he’s the mouthy liberal that starts an argument with grandpa at thanksgiving.

two of my favorite lines to look back on are in this episode, too:

“you’re not going to scare this one off, fallon” is such a great line from blake because it implies that there were women between alexis and cristal that we never got to see. obviously no other fiancees or wives but i would love to hear snippets about fallon terrorizing blake’s other girlfriends.

“he pays me 200k a year, and i’m banging his daughter” is the FUNNIEST culhane line of all time, not to mention how fallon reacts to it. i still can’t believe this was the controversial sexism that i was hearing about when the episode finally aired. that line alone almost sold me on the ship over jeff.

i’ve mentioned before also that i think having one ‘good’ character in a show full of grey or bad characters does more harm than good. season one of dynasty did seem to understand that, so that is one thing i do really miss about it. characters that leaned-good without being perfect suited the world much better and also made their corruption less ‘character arc killing’ and more ‘understandable and dynamic’. cristal, steven, and even culhane were all really great examples of this.

additionally i’m just now realizing that the matthew - cristal - claudia storyline stretched across the entire season without becoming too dull. i miss that style of plot, it would be cool to see something similar come from season five (for specifics, i mean a long running thread throughout the entire season with actual developmental focus). there was real dread and drama that had been slowly built up here; i definitely miss this show playing the long game. they have the audience, they have our focus. they don’t need to speed through 10 b-plots per season to keep us tuning in each week with something ‘fresh’. they also built up the relationship between fallon and cristal beautifully. i’ll cling to her offhandedly mentioning in season 2 that she also felt she had ‘lost cristal’ until i’m dead and buried. fallon’s mommy issues have so massively skewed her relationships with women - specifically in positions of authority - that watching that development slowburn was an absolute gift.

one of the big reasons i loved jeff and fallon so much, aside from how much i shipped them together, was that it gave us insight into fallon in high school. i loved all the little snippets of information about how she stuck up for and hung out with jeff and monica despite them being ‘low income’ was really interesting because it’s not that it shows that fallon wasn’t stuck up but it shows how smart she was. she was fine with being edgy and making bold choices (her chloë sevigny phase also comes to mind) because jeff was a genius, monica was her friend, and she didn’t care about anything else. she wanted to be an engineer, she dressed as rbg for halloween, rode horses, and hung out with the kids way below her tax bracket because she liked them. between that, then later going on to get a dui (1.02), apparently being an herb enjoyer (1.12), and also being a billionaire the entire time - that was an exceptionally dynamic character. also to tie back in to what i’d said earlier about enjoying the slow burn plots, jeff and fallon were so deeply slow burn that it set my teeth on edge in the best way. they’d interrupt their flirting to discuss business which i couldn’t even be mad about because i was also so interested in that side of the show that i couldn’t decide what i wanted more of any time they were on screen together. this first episode literally made me crazy.

this is literally the most explosive pilot of any show i’ve watched in the same genre / for this demographic. i’m obviously biased but i was really blown away the first time that i watched it, and while i don’t tend to rewatch as often as i used to, showing this show to people for the first time is one of my favorite things, and a large part of that is due to how quickly the pilot (and 1.02 as well) can suck someone in. i rarely have to even ask ‘do you want to watch the next episode?’ after showing someone the pilot before they’re rushing to hit the ‘next’ button. when i talk about the show changing so much over the years that is obviously in large part due to basic character development and plots moving along as they should, so it’s not necessarily out of a place of negativity. i do think it would be a little difficult to sell this show to people the same way if i were to show them an episode from a later season, even with a full understanding of the characters and plots ahead of time just because of how weirdly perfect 1.01 is overall.

also before i abruptly end this post i want to say that my favorite tidbit from this episode is the bouquet toss at the end of blake and cristal’s wedding. it passes hands from cristal to fallon, who disgustedly throws it again, caught by steven; the exact order that these three characters get married in during this season. (here’s a really low quality gif from an illegal recording of said shot)

Tangled Salt Marathon - You're Kidding Me

So we’ve finally come to the last of season two’s filler episodes. Let’s see if we can knock this one out real quick.

Summary: The front door of the mysterious seashell estate vanishes, trapping the group. They try to find another way out but find a spinning top whose magic regresses Cassandra and Lance into toddlers and Shorty into a baby. They’ve only have an hour to find the top and reverse the effects or the changes become permanent. Unfortunately neither of Rapunzel’s or Eugene’s parenting methods keep their now childish friends on task.

So Why Did No One Stand Watch Last Night?

They were all sleeping right next to the entrance, and after the run in with the mirror monsters, you would think that they would have taken turns standing watch.

But nope, the front door vanishes when no one was looking cause they don't have any foresight.

A Low Budget Doesn’t Excuse Filler

Like most of season two, this is yet another episode that adds very little to the overall story. It’s slightly better than the Return of Quaid or Curses, but not by much. I put it on the same level as The Forest of No Return, as I do like the mains’ development, but there’s really no reason why such episodes exist to begin with.

The meta reason for staying in certain places for three episodes, instead of only one or two, is because of budgetary reasons. The crew have to build new sets and models for every new location or person the cast comes across. This costs money to make, so the higher ups wanted to reuse assets. Which is understandable, but not an excuse for utilizing them poorly.

If you need to stay in one area or have characters reappear, then you need to give story reasons for that. Ones that tie back to the overall narrative and/or the mains’ character arcs.

The shell house and Matthews should be more important than what they are as they both have connections to the ultimate big bad of the series.Adria shouldn’t be wasted for a whole episode when she’s the only one driving the plot in season two and has limited appearances. Vardaros and its people shouldn’t be a one and done thing if you’re going to spend so much time setting them up. And there’s still one off episodes, locations, and characters who aren’t brought back and add nothing

Not only does this make for a weaker story, it also undermines the cost saving measures that you tried to implement to begin with.

This Isn’t Representation!

She’s totally gay, but like not really, cause this can also be interpreted as a dominatrix joke, and there’s no other real indication of her orientation outside her like smiling at her best friend/crush/sister sometimes and keeping that rose her creepy ex-boyfriend gave her.

And don't give me any bullshit excuses about Disney not letting the crew make Cassandra canonly gay/bi.

The Owl House aired just this year, the same year as Tangled’s final season. Also Globby and Carl from Big Hero Six were both confirmed to be a couple on screen a month after this episode came out. Both shows would have been in development at the same time as Tangled was. Both would have been subject to the same regulations and restrictions while writing their stories.

It isn’t “Disney” that stopped the storyboard artists from having Cass be a confirmed lesbian, it’s Chris and Ben, the head writers themselves, who failed to write it into the story properly, if at all.

Chris is the one who made Raps and Cass “sisters”. Chris is the one who wouldn’t tell the crew about his ‘twists’. Chris is the one who had Cass crush on Andrew, even after he tried to kill her. Chris is the one who made Cassandra ‘straight’ and has since used gay baiting to keep her fanbase in his pocket.

Like I am really damn sick and tired of Casspunzel stans defending Chris on twitter, when he’s the very one who sunk thier ship to begin with. I’m also really fed up with certain fans trying to bully others for not accepting their “Cass is a lesbian” headcanons as fact because what the storyboarders say on twitter after the show is over with isn’t gospel and isn’t real rep.

I don’t care if you ship Cass with Raps or headcanon her as being gay. Ships and headcanons are great and can be a lot of fun. But fuck you if you ever try to shame people for not sharing your ships/headcanons. Not only is it biophobic and acephobic to insist that there’s only ever a binary option when it comes to orientation and shipping, but it also reinforces harmful stereotypes and tropes about people in the queer community.

Like, yes, I personally may be an introverted angry bitch who’s an LBGTQA member and activist, but that doesn’t mean that every introverted bitchy woman in media is a lesbian. What kind of message does that send people when that’s the only character archetype that’s given representation or is loudly proclaimed as ‘gay’ by the wider audience? Fuck that noise!

I Know Humor is Subjective but...WHY?

Why did we give the baby a beard? How does that logically work? Did anyone outside of the crew actually find this funny?

TTS has like this one out of touch dude throwing out jokes that don’t really land with the target audience. Fans have called it ‘boomer humor’ but it’s actually ‘Gen-X’ humor. Not only because Chris and Ben are Gen Xers but because this is the type of crap my older brother would find hilarious.

Gen Xers are between Boomers and Millennials and so their humor is this weird blend of gross out shock humor, ironic nihilism, and out of date stereotypes that are only mildly better than those of the previous generation before them. They’re the generation who gave us Beavis and Butthead, South Park, and Clerks.

That’s not a criticism of Gen X as a generation, but rather just an acknowledgment that they’re worlds away from the neo-dada absurdism, more socially conscious, and globalized humor of Gen Z.

So Why Is the Bad Guy Telling the Heroes How to Foil His Plans?

Like he not only tells them how to fix their problem and how long they got in order to do so, but he also informs them how it happened in the first place. This goes directly against his plans. Had he simply said nothing and stayed out sight, then Raps and Eugene would have been lost for the full hour and most likely not have saved everyone on time.

I like to headcanon that Mathews is just “that asshole” that loves to taunt and tease but in a that manner that gives him plausible deniability. He also may just be bored, since he’s a ghost trapped in one place all the time. Yet that still doesn’t change the fact that he shot himself in the foot here.

Raps and Young Cass’s Relationship Is the Same as Raps and Adult Cass’s, and That Is a Problem.

Condescending, manipulative, hypocritical, and bossy is the way Rapunzel treats everyone. She doesn’t understand the actual difference between a child and an adult. She only understands who she who she can and can’t boss around. And those people that she can’t place under her thumb are labeled antagonists by the show.

Nor does she actually care about what either kid Lance or kid Cass has to say. She’s just being proformative, and young Cass can see through that BS, which why her methods do not work. It’s not because she’s not ‘strict’ enough; it’s because she’s not being honest.

Meanwhile Child Cassandra is just as combative, rude, bullying, and entitled as Adult Cassandra. In season three she regresses even further and becomes more violent than before.

Unlike Rapunzel, Cassandra wasn’t trapped in a tower for 18 years with zero human contact outside of her abuser. She escaped that fate and was raised in a loving home. That doesn’t mean that there won't be scars, but I still expect her to be more mature than her seven year old self. Just because she’s whining about not being special enough at 24 instead of screaming about the floor being lava doesn’t mean that she’s still not throwing a temper tantrum.

Like I should not be seeing a replay/foreshadowing of their main conflict here. They aren’t children. They’re dynamic isn’t that of a mother and child. It’s not even a big sister looking out for a little sister type relationship. Its two immature women dragging innocent victims into their bitchy cat fight for dominance over the other.

If you want me to take their issues seriously then give them real stakes to disagree over, mature behavior that I can root for, and a resolvement that doesn’t reverse any potential development that they could have had.

Matthews Plan Makes Zero Sense

For starters, half the group being kids isn’t enough of a reason for Rapunzel to stay at the shell house. Even if the effects of the time top became permanent, then Raps and Eugene could just leave and take the kids with them. Either to finish the road trip, or go straight back to Corona. Not that there’s any real reason to get the Dark Kingdom anyways, nor is there a ticking clock stopping Raps from trying again later if she chose to.

Rapunzel also is not obligated to become anyone’s mother. If she took them back to Corona than Cap would undoubtedly raise Cassandra all over again, and Lance and Shorty could be adopted by someone else. Any of the pub thugs might take them or even perhaps the King and Queen since they missed out on raising their actual daughter. Though for my money I’d get Monty or Xavier to take them in. They seem the most mature and both are shown to be good with kids.

Then again Rapunzel has been shown twice now to not give a damn about abandoning orphans, so even the ‘dump them at an orphanage’ or ‘leave them alone in the woods to fend for themselves’ isn’t entirely off the table either. I wish I was joking, but I’m not. Sadly, only Eugene’s love for Lance might be the one thing to stop her from doing just so, and even that’s iffy.

As for the missing door from earlier, if that was all that was stopping them from leaving then the time top shenanigans were fully unnecessary altogether.

I Actually Like Eugene and Rapunzel’s Conflict Here; I Just Wish It Was In a Better Episode.

Each of their viewpoints stem from their upbringing.

Rapunzel is unique in that she was simultaneously emotionally abused and neglected while being physically spoiled. Especially once she found out that she was princess, where she was then handed nearly anything and everything she wanted. She doesn’t recognize that getting your every possible whim come true can be damaging. Nor does she have any comprehension of what living in poverty is like and how this many toys is wasteful to someone like Eugene who had so very little and stole to survive.

She does however associate limits, boundaries, and orders with abusive behavior because she’s been denied autonomy and respect her whole life. She’s never seen what healthy parenting looks like and how rules can be applied correctly.

To Rapunzel no orders is ‘freeing’ and ‘validation’ is all that is needed to get a child to listen to you. Which doesn’t work for her because she doesn’t understand that real communication is more than just giving a compliment now and then.

Meanwhile Eugene lacked any sort of anchor at all. He was left to his own devices at a young age and had no one to rely on for emotional needs and, after leaving the orphanage, no one to provide physical needs either.

It’s telling that he and Lance latched onto Quaid as the only authority figure in their life, despite Quaid never out right adopting them. He was the only sense of stability that they had who they could trust wouldn’t hurt them, despite being strict with them.

And now that Eugene has gotten older and is reformed, he can probably understand why Quaid was so harsh on him and Lance. Quaid probably did more to try and help them turn from a life crime than even Rapunzel did. Like meeting Rapunzel was the inciting incident that inspired Eugene to make that leap, but the groundwork was already laid out for him to do so elsewhere. Things like his good communication skills, respect and empathy of others, and understanding of boundaries had to be learned from somewhere, and if not from the Sheriff of Vardaros than who?

What I’m getting at is that, while Rapunzel rejects her parents methods but then fails to break her learned habits from them anyways, Eugene is the reverse. He’s come to embrace his mentor’s teachings, but he fails to implement them correctly because he’s not Quaid. Being authoritative isn’t his strong suit. It goes against his usual nature as the easy going person that he is and so any attempts to come across as forceful fail as they’re hollow.

Kids know authenticity and genuineness when they see it. The children reject Rapunzel because she’s not being real with them, yet they also reject Eugene cause he’s not being honest with himself.

It’s a complex and mature conflict. Neither person is fully right nor wrong, and only by learning from each other and adopting both methods can they achieve their goal.

TTS can be deep when it wants to be. There’s a good foundation here for mature themes and complex characterization. It’s just the series doesn’t ever commit to it.

Whatever personal drama going on here about two young adults trying to cope with their past traumas and how that affects their current life and future goals is completely lost in the magical goofy antics and low stakes situation. Even the stuff about Eugene and his relationship with Quaid is reduced to nothing but a one off joke rather than being genuinely explored as a point of development.

Imagine how much more powerful things would have been if Angry and Red were brought along on the trip. If this argument was over them and whether or not they should adopt the two girls themselves or consider other options. That would be something with real weight. Something with a choice that had actual consequences attached to it. Something that would permanently affect all involved parties. Something that wouldn’t make the two leads look like outright dicks for abandoning two children for a second damn time in a row.

You Have 70 Feet of Magical, Indestructible Hair! Why Are You Afraid of a Bunch of Dogs!?

You’ve fought off giant monsters, killer robots, and supernatural beings with magical powers. What do you mean you can’t hold off a pack of guard dogs while busting down a stuck door? Why is Eugene the shield for everyone and not the actual unbreakable hair that you use as a shield all the damn time? And Why did we have to rely on Shorty again to be the deus ex machina of the episode?

At this point the writers should have just made him Demantius instead of the monkey.

What Happened To This New Dream? Where Did It Go In Season Three?

Most fans who do enjoy season two happen to be big New Dream fans as this is by far and away the best season for them. I’ll admit that the series, up to this point, had me actively liking them together, despite being originally lukewarm to the pairing in the movie.

Their conflicts were for the the most part mature and real. They learned from one another equally and had open communication when it didn't involve ‘marriage is a trap’ BS. Things, like compromising on differentiating future goals, honesty and communication, and making time for one another and extending effort into a relationship while being true to yourself are all relatable issues.

Even today's episode featured the topic of having kids and parenting. Which is a discussion you absolutely need to have with your prospective spouse before entering into any long term commitments and signing any legal contracts. For real, I’ve seen marriages fall apart because they didn’t agree on whether or not they wanted children.

I don’t know what went down between writing season two and season three, but things quickly took a sharp turn away from this dynamic and nosedived into a pit of uncomfortable bullying and gross sexist implications here after.

Matthews Plan Goes Against Zhan Tiri’s Plan

Yeah so Matthews is one of Zhan Tiri’s disciples, but he apparently doesn’t know of her goals/plans, cause she needs Rapunzel and company to reach the moonstone, not stay stuck here.

The meta reason for this that the Zhan Tiri’s story was altered at the last minute and the writers failed to make sure there was any sort of consistency between what they already set up and where they actually wound to actually taking the plot.

The in universe reason is that Zhan Tiri is an impotent moron, but that’s not what the writers were going for so it’s a fail.

Conclusion

I like the New Dream stuff, and Matthews is at least entertaining despite being incompetent. Everything else about the episode is ‘meh’ tho.
