Heather: Alright, Billy, it's your turn.
Billy: This game is stupid.
Chrissy: You didn't think so when beer came out of your nose when I said I'd rather fuck Goth Sam and kill Carol.
Billy: I was surprised by your improving taste.
Chrissy: *giggles and shoves him* Fuck you.
Billy: No thank you.
Barb: Okay let's keep this going already before my mom comes down here again with more sweets. Billy, you have to answer. Argyle, its your turn to ask.
Argyle: *wide-eyed and chewing on the last double chocolate chip cookie* Mmm oood?
Billy: *knowing Argyle just went 'my dude'* Just ask Argie.
Argyle: ... N-
Billy: Kill Nancy, Fuck Steve, Marry Steve
Barb: Hey!
Argyle: Whoa Billiam I was gonna say Nancy Reagan. Are you reading my mind? Are we finally psychically linking up? *reaches for Billy's head*
Billy: *swats the hand to protect his curls* Fine. Kill both Nancys, Fuck Steve, Marry Steve.
Barb: *punches Billy in the tit*
Billy: Hey! *punches her in the tit right back*
*tit punching and rolling on the floor commences while Heather answers Chrissy's picks and Argyle cheers on the tit punching*
Mrs. Holland: *yelling from upstairs* Pizza! Come and get it!
*the tit punching and cheering and the Fuck, Marry, Kill game pause... and then five hungry teens push and shove and trip each other up the basement stairs*

Queer Books Challenged in Florida Schools and Libraries
There are some affiliate links below in case you want to support MQH.
Gender Queer: A Memoir, Maia Kobabe: Now, Gender Queer is here. Maia's intensely cathartic autobiography charts eir journey of self-identity, which includes the mortification and confusion of adolescent crushes, grappling with how to come out to family and society, bonding with friends over erotic gay fanfiction, and facing the trauma and fundamental violation of pap smears.
The Color Purple, Alice Walker: Separated as girls, sisters Celie and Nettie sustain their loyalty to and hope in each other across time, distance and silence. Through a series of letters spanning nearly thirty years, first from Celie to God, then the sisters to each other despite the unknown, the novel draws readers into its rich and memorable portrayals of Celie, Nettie, Shug Avery and Sofia and their experience. The Color Purple broke the silence around domestic and sexual abuse, narrating the lives of women through their pain and struggle, companionship and growth, resilience and bravery.
Julián Is a Mermaid, Jessica Love: While riding the subway home from the pool with his abuela one day, Julián notices three women spectacularly dressed up. Their hair billows in brilliant hues, their dresses end in fishtails, and their joy fills the train car. When Julián gets home, daydreaming of the magic he's seen, all he can think about is dressing up just like the ladies in his own fabulous mermaid costume: a butter-yellow curtain for his tail, the fronds of a potted fern for his headdress. But what will Abuela think about the mess he makes -- and even more importantly, what will she think about how Julián sees himself? Mesmerizing and full of heart, Jessica Love's author-illustrator debut is a jubilant picture of self-love and a radiant celebration of individuality.
Drama: A Graphic Novel, Raina Telgemeier: Callie loves theater. And while she would totally try out for her middle school's production of Moon over Mississippi, she can't really sing. Instead she's the set designer for the drama department's stage crew, and this year she's determined to create a set worthy of Broadway on a middle-school budget. But how can she, when she doesn't know much about carpentry, ticket sales are down, and the crew members are having trouble working together? Not to mention the onstage AND offstage drama that occurs once the actors are chosen. And when two cute brothers enter the picture, things get even crazier!
Cemetery Boys, Aiden Thomas: Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can't get rid of him. When his traditional Latinx family has problems accepting his true gender, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo. With the help of his cousin and best friend Maritza, he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free. However, the ghost he summons is actually Julian Diaz, the school's resident bad boy, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death. He's determined to find out what happened and tie off some loose ends before he leaves. Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave.
I Am Billie Jean King, Brad Meltzer: This friendly, fun biography series focuses on the traits that made our heroes great--the traits that kids can aspire to in order to live heroically themselves. Each book tells the story of one of America's icons in a lively, conversational way that works well for the youngest nonfiction readers and that always includes the hero's childhood influences. At the back are an excellent timeline and photos. This volume features Billie Jean King, the world champion tennis player who fought successfully for women's rights. From a young age, Billie Jean King loved sports--especially tennis! But as she got older, she realized that plenty of people, even respected male athletes, didn't take women athletes seriously. She set to prove them wrong and show girls everywhere that sports are for everyone, regardless of gender.
This One Summer, Mariko Tamaki: Every summer, Rose goes with her mom and dad to a lake house in Awago Beach. It's their getaway, their refuge. Rosie's friend Windy is always there, too, like the little sister she never had. But this summer is different. Rose's mom and dad won't stop fighting, and when Rose and Windy seek a distraction from the drama, they find themselves with a whole new set of problems. One of the local teens - just a couple of years older than Rose and Windy - is caught up in something bad... Something life threatening. It's a summer of secrets, and sorrow, and growing up, and it's a good thing Rose and Windy have each other.
Marriage of a Thousand Lies, Sj Sindu: Lucky and her husband, Krishna, are gay. They present an illusion of marital bliss to their conservative Sri Lankan-American families, while each dates on the side. It's not ideal, but for Lucky, it seems to be working. She goes out dancing, she drinks a bit, she makes ends meet by doing digital art on commission. But when Lucky's grandmother has a nasty fall, Lucky returns to her childhood home and unexpectedly reconnects with her former best friend and first lover, Nisha, who is preparing for her own arranged wedding with a man she's never met.
And Tango Makes Three, Peter Parnell: At the penguin house at the Central Park Zoo, two penguins named Roy and Silo were a little bit different from the others. But their desire for a family was the same. And with the help of a kindly zookeeper, Roy and Silo got the chance to welcome a baby penguin of their very own.
More Happy Than Not, Adam Silvera: In the months following his father's suicide, sixteen-year-old Aaron Soto can't seem to find happiness again, despite the support of his girlfriend, Genevieve, and his overworked mom. Grief and the smile-shaped scar on his wrist won't let him forget the pain. But when Aaron meets Thomas, a new kid in the neighborhood, something starts to shift inside him. Aaron can't deny his unexpected feelings for Thomas despite the tensions their friendship has created with Genevieve and his tight-knit crew. Since Aaron can't stay away from Thomas or turn off his newfound happiness, he considers taking drastic actions. The Leteo Institute's revolutionary memory-altering procedure will straighten him out, even if it means forgetting who he truly is.
Melissa, Alex Gino: When people look at Melissa, they think they see a boy named George. But she knows she's not a boy. She knows she's a girl.
Melissa thinks she'll have to keep this a secret forever. Then her teacher announces that their class play is going to be Charlotte's Web. Melissa really, really, REALLY wants to play Charlotte. But the teacher says she can't even try out for the part... because she's a boy.
With the help of her best friend, Kelly, Melissa comes up with a plan. Not just so she can be Charlotte -- but so everyone can know who she is, once and for all.
A Quick & Easy Guide to Queer & Trans Identities, Mady G, Jules Zuckerberg: In this quick and easy guide to queer and trans identities, cartoonists Mady G and Jules Zuckerberg guide you through the basics of the LGBT+ world! Covering essential topics like sexuality, gender identity, coming out, and navigating relationships, this guide explains the spectrum of human experience through informative comics, interviews, worksheets, and imaginative examples. This Book Is Gay, Juno Dawson: This candid, funny, and uncensored exploration of sexuality and what it's like to grow up LGBTQ also includes real stories from people across the gender and sexual spectrums, not to mention hilarious illustrations.
Little & Lion, Brandy Colbert: When Suzette comes home to Los Angeles from her boarding school in New England, she's isn't sure if she'll ever want to go back. L.A. is where her friends and family are (as well as her crush, Emil). And her stepbrother, Lionel, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, needs her emotional support. When Khalid unexpectedly passed away, he shed what was his first skin for another to live down by the bayou in their small Louisiana town. Khalid still visits in dreams, and King must keep these secrets to himself as he watches grief transform his family.
It would be easier if King could talk with his best friend, Sandy Sanders. But just days before he died, Khalid told King to end their friendship, after overhearing a secret about Sandy-that he thinks he might be gay. "You don't want anyone to think you're gay too, do you?"
Sorted: Growing Up, Coming Out, and Finding My Place: A Transgender Memoir, Jackson Bird: An unflinching and endearing memoir from LGBTQ+ advocate Jackson Bird about how he finally sorted things out and came out as a transgender man. When Jackson Bird was twenty-five, he came out as transgender to his friends, family, and anyone in the world with an internet connection. Hi! I love reading your opinions and I have just started The Sign. What are your opinions on the show and what route are you hoping it would take for the second half of the show? Take care and happy new year!
Hello anon! You picked such an interesting moment to send this ask. We’re halfway through the show and I think its strengths and weaknesses have become fairly clear. Let's talk about it!
Strength: The Chemistry
Tumblr media
I think this is the thing that had all the girlies losing it right out of the gate: Phaya and Tharn are hot and their interactions are hotter. The pull and chemistry between them is palpable and the set up for their romance is compelling. Kudos to whoever found Babe and decided to pair him with Billy: you, sir or madam, are incredible at your job and deserve a fruit basket. We are all dying for these two to finally fuck.
Weakness: The Pacing
Tumblr media
Which is why it's kind of frustrating that the show is dragging its feet on letting their relationship advance. The first four eps were delicious tension-building, but as the show starts to stall and use dream sequence fakeouts to provide smut without actual relationship development, the audience is clearly getting antsy. The show's pacing is all over the place in general, with wildly varied episode lengths and inconsistent action and plot advancement from week to week. And the desire to drag out the romance without a compelling alternative plot to fill the show in its absence is causing some damage to the characters, most notably Tharn, who is just starting to seem unreasonably antagonistic to a person we know he likes, not to mention unperceptive in his continued inability to notice what is going on around him.
Strength: Production Values
Tumblr media
This show is absolutely gorgeous; you can tell most of the money went into making every frame of it beautiful. The strength of the production values and hard work of the crew to create the look and feel of the world was evident from the first episode with all those beautiful training sequences on the beach. And this is used to particularly strong effect whenever we visit Phaya and Tharn's past lives and see the magical world that exists around them come to life.
Strength: The Supporting Cast
Tumblr media
The show also has a great ensemble, with Yai especially a standout character who brings a lot of fun to the show, along with his girlfriend Sand and the police squad bros. This is not surprising, as big, messy, chaotic, endearing queer friend groups are an IdolFactory staple. As of last week, we officially have a lesbian side pairing! Tharn and Phaya also have interesting family histories with sweet grandmas and loved ones who lend depth to their characterization.
Weakness: The Copaganda
Tumblr media
It was perhaps too much to expect that this bl about cops would have a more sophisticated perspective on law enforcement, institutional corruption, and the so-called "justice" system, but that does not stop me from groaning out loud every time they pause the story to let these characters wax poetic about the nobility of their jobs.
Strength: Thai Folklore
Tumblr media
This show is teaching all of us some things about real Thai folklore about the garuda and nara, including local customs associated with celebrating these tales, and the depiction of these stories in the show is just beautiful. Despite it basically being a tourism advert (complete with couple shirts for no reason??), I really enjoyed the episode that took us to Nong Khai and the Mekong River to see how modern Thai folks interpret and celebrate the myths at the center of this show’s story and ground us in something real.
Weakness: An Underdeveloped Take on Toxic Masculinity
Tumblr media
This show uses violence quite a lot in its story, including violence in interpersonal dynamics, and it sometimes seems to want us to be alarmed by uncontrolled male anger, and sometimes impressed by it. At this point, Tharn and Phaya have both struck each other in anger during personal disagreements, and there hasn't been any real reckoning with the fallout of that. On top of that, the show has given us some crime cases that highlight the harm of toxic masculinity while also seeming to glorify and revel in it, most notably in the framing of a man who kidnapped and retraumatized sexual assault victims as a hunky folk hero. It's a confused take, to say the least, and I'm not sure the show has the depth and precision necessary in the writing to take on some of what it's throwing at the wall.
Strength: Villains
Tumblr media
All I can say is Heng was born to play an evil snake god. The show has done a good job at making him feel like a real threat and building the antagonism between him and Phaya to the point where Phaya has been isolated from support and made to look crazy in front of Tharn. Dr. Slow Motion is very good at this.
So, what's the TL; DR? This show is a lot of fun, but has some obvious weaknesses in the writing, so do your best not to take it too seriously if you can. I am ready to see Phaya and Tharn get together and finally start working as a team, for the full backstory and epic battle they are waging to come out, and for the motivations of the rest of the cast of characters to become clear (I just know there are some additional past life reincarnations waiting to be revealed). It's a great time if you don't think about it too hard, and I really hope the back half will pick up the pace so that we can all just enjoy the ride.

He didn’t mean to hightail it straight to the nearest bar. He didn’t even know what a dive bar a was doing out in the fucking backwoods of Indiana, anyway.
Billy’d just gotten in a big fuckin’ fight with his old man, shimmied out the window of their new house, and started walking.
And he happened across a bar.
He didn’t have his wallet on him, rookie move, but he figured his black eye and three-day-old moving stubble might help him out a bit here.
The bouncer gave him an odd look, glaring him down as he approached, but let him pass without asking for identification.
There were motorcycles parked in the gravel lot, along with some sensible looking Mom Cars.
It was dim inside, and the floor was kinda sticky, but they were playing Patti Smith on a shitty jukebox, so he decided to stay.
He took a seat at the bar.
The bartender gave him the same funny look the bouncer did. She was one hell of a woman, her leather jacket had a pair of handcuffs sewn onto the front, she had her nose, lips, and eyebrows pierced. Her hair was greying and cropped into a very similar crew cut to Neil’s.
“What’ll it be?”
“Whiskey, please. And maybe a beer, Darling.” He winked.
She laughed.
“Honey, you know where you are, right? This is a fuckin’ dyke bar, and you’re no older than sixteen. You’ll have a pop and you’ll be grateful for it.” She had a slight southern drawl to her voice. Texas. Like his mom.
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Okay, quit it with that shit.” She scooped ice into a glass, and poured him a cola from the well. “Why you here? It got somethin’ to do with that shiner?”
He took a long drink of the soda.
He didn’t know if it was her voice, or the fact that for the first time in a long time, he was with his own people.
“Yeah.”
“Someone at home?”
“Yeah.”
“‘Cause you’re a homo?”
“Yeah.”
She smiled at him, although this one wasn’t the sad one he’d been expecting. It was understanding.
“We’ll, Baby. You come here if you ever need a safe place to roost, okay? We all know when one of our own needs saving. You come here, and you ask for Susan, and we’ll get your mind off that bruise.”
He took another long drink of his soda, but this time, to try and swallow down the stupid sob that was trying to force its way out.
“Thank you. I’m, I didn’t realize what kind of bar this is. I didn’t really know that people like us were out here. My dad, he, uh, moved us here. From California. He caught me with a boy.” He averted his gaze from Susan’s face, making patterns in the condensation on the side of his glass. Patti Smith turned over to The Runaways. Some women were dancing by the jukebox now. “He told me we were coming here so I couldn’t do any of that fairy shit.” He furrowed his brow on the last line, puffing up his chest in an imitation of his father.
“Just because people hate us more here, doesn’t mean we don’t exist. Queers live everywhere, whether people like your daddy like it or not. He can’t stop us from living any better than he can stop the sun from rising.”
Susan scooped some ice into a clean bar towel, securing it closed with the yellow crunchy around her wrist. She slid it across the bar to Billy, and he put it on his eye gratefully.
“Don’t lose that scrunchy. That’s my wife’s favorite one, and she won’t speak to me for a month if I give it to some kid.”
“Yeah? Your old lady a hardass?” Billy grinned.
There was something, so fucking good, about talking to Susan. Talking to an actual fucking grown up. Someone with a life, and a partner. A queer, like him, who actually found love. And, by the dreamy grin on her face, had found happiness.
“Hollie would yell herself hoarse is she heard you call her old. She don’t look a day over thirty-five, she’ll tell you. We’ve been together for over twenty years. That’s why she’s my wife. We can’t get married yet, but she’s not my fucking girlfriend. We’re not silly high schoolers goin’ to the prom, and shit. No offense.”
“Nah, I may be a silly high schooler, but I’d rather be dead than go to any prom. Especially with a girl. No offense.”
“Hey, you’re in my bar, and we don’t allow bad talk about women. Unless you ex-girl fucked you over. Then we talk a whole lotta shit.” She refilled Billy’s soda. “But you could always go with a friend.”
“I’ve lived in this town for four days, I don’t have any friends, let alone a beard. Maybe if I did, my dad wouldn’t’ve popped me tonight.”
Susan’s smile faltered a little bit.
“Sweetie, I don’t like to interfere. And I know that most of the time, getting CPS involved makes it worse. But Baby, are you safe? I know he hits you, but do you think he’d-” she trailed off. “I’ve just seen some shit, you know? Boys like you with fathers like yours. Boys that didn’t survive.”
“Everything my dad does, is because he’s scared of how people see him. He’s terrified that people won’t think he’s a great father or a respectable citizen. I don’t think he’d get that low.”
But, in truth, Billy didn’t know.
He’s been getting hits from his dad since he was a kid. And there are times when Billy had thought well, this is it.
But Susan was right. CPS never did anything but piss off his dad.
Susan looked thoughtful.
She grabbed a napkin, and pulled a pen out of her leather jacket.
“I’m giving you the number here. You call if you need anything. We take care of our own, okay?” He nodded in response. “Finish your pop, and get back on home. I’m sure you have a curfew to mind.”
Billy winced, looking up at Susan, feeling like such shit after her kindness.
“I don’t have my wallet.”
“Yeah, you don’t have shoes on either, Dumbass.” She winked at him again. “Holl!” She shouted towards the group of women dancing by the jukebox. “This little birdie needs a ride!”
A short woman came drifting over. Her hair was dark black, and swept clear below her ass. She could’ve sat on it and not noticed.
The scrunchy made sense.
She was short, much shorter than Susan, but she beamed up at her, turning to smile just as warmly at Billy.
“What’s your name, kiddo?”
“Billy.”
It was kind of nice, being called terms of endearment by these two women. He liked that they weren’t trying to pull one over on him. He felt safe.
Susan slid a set of keys to Hollie.
“Take Billy home, please. We don’t need him walking around outside.”
Hollie ushered Billy out of his seat, climbing in the stool herself to lean over the bar. She and Susan kissed over the bar, and that funny hopeful feeling washed over Billy again.
“You’re welcome here whenever you want, Baby. You’re not the first little gay boy we’ve had in here, and you won’t be the last. Don’t be a stranger.”
“Thank you, seriously, I-thank you.”
Susan beamed at him, sliding Hollie’s yellow scrunchy back in her wrist.

Oh boy... OH BOY... I was reading through comments and tags under that Flint vs. Stede post (and before that in Silver vs. Oluwande post) and OH BOY RANT INCOMING
Feel free to ignore. No, I'm prickly about this.
I LOVE how people are like "Black Sails fans are so mean why are they like that T.T ?" in the tags and comments.
LET ME TELL YOU.
So we have this show that has been marginalized and has been pushed to the side for years. A show that has excellent plot, wonderful intrigue, magnificent representation and well-written, 3D characters that are complex and relatable. You get your edgy queer men (whether you want to characterize Flint as gay or bi, doesn't change the fact that he likes dick whichever way), you get your edgy queer girls (Anne), you get your flamboyant whatever-the-fuck-Jack-Rackham-is (<3), you get sweet gays (Thomas), you get confused bisexuals (Eleanor, Silver), you get straight sweets (Miranda) and straight angery dicks (Woodes Rogers), and competent, edgy straights (Vane). Oh! A competent, master-of-the-house lesbian? Check (Max). You even have asexuals, or that is what I shall forever classify Billy as. You have a f/f sex scene in the first damn episode, ffs. You get threesomes (sexual, romantic), you get couples, you even have Silver in a brothel orgy.
But sexual representation is not ALL! You get goofy pirates (Jack Rackham), you get serious pirates (Blackbeard), you get balls of rage (Flint), you get chill, laid-back sea dogs (Gates), you get competent little weasels (Silver), you get incompetent rats (Dufrense). You also have marvelous extras and side characters (Beauclerc the marksman, Captain Fruit-Fruit, Idelle... OHMYGOD IDELLE <3333).
There's the political plot that's historically accurate, the story's plot that's Flint's big gay rage, there's the sociological context of being painted as a monster, there's the gold hunt, there are ships correctly operated by crews of more than five fucking people, there are guns, blood and realistic injuries. You get quotations and allusions to Shakespeare, Cervantes, Julius Caesar, Marcus Fucking Aurelius, a metric ton of other classical writers. You get so many tropes done right it's astonishing and too effing long to list them all here.
On top of that, there is the picturesque landscape, absolutely gorgeous ships and very accurate portrayal of how life looked back then.
We had to defend that show when it first came out, the actors had to fucking fight homophobic assholes upon the airing of season two (IMAGINE THAT), people who loved it had a hard time going around, although admittedly it's a "fandom" hard time, not a "real life" hard time. We persisted, we persevered, and now we're here, clinging to what's left of our fandom, because we are admittedly all over the place and we don't have "troops" on any one social media, which makes our numbers small in comparison to other fandoms, and makes fandom interactions very limited.
Now imagine that there aired a show... a pirate show promising a lot. And then the show turned out to be an office-type comedy with no lesbian/bi women representation (I may be wrong, but I did watch it out of curiosity, didn't see any, just guys). A show that the whole plot of is just a rendition of the Beauty and the Beast for pirate times with so many historical inaccuracies (couching your crew like a bunch of office workers? Plz. The way they speak and the concepts they talk of that weren't there? It's like they were sitting around a fire, holding hands and singing kumbaya). And don't get me wrong, there's place for those shows as well, and maybe it works for you (and great for you too!).
We tried to ignore it, really we did. We basically gave it the eyebrow-raise-huff-ignore thing that you do on the internet when you want someone to enjoy their stuff and are not interested in it yourself.
But you know what happened? Suddenly there were people on twitter tagging everyone and their dog from Black Sails with renditions of Flint/Izzy (Izzy who comes across as an extreme asshole at best and a homophobic shit at worst and you can't fault people for reading it like this). Let that sink in - our fandom babe Flint, who had his whole life ruined due to homophobia and homophobic assholes is suddenly being shipped with a guy who suspiciously fits the description a bit too much for our tastes. Wouldn't you get angry? Of course you would, we're all very protective of our babes. We are, you are, everyone is. We asked you not to do this, and while I admit that hurling curses your way might not have been the most polite way of asking you to stop, the message was clear enough. What does OFMD fandom do? They all double down. Double fucking down on fanfiction and tagging everything in BS again, pairing Flint and Izzy together, writing things way out of the realm of any possibilities because most of the writers didn't watch BS (I did read their comments on that. They weren't even sorry). If you take such character and throw him into a work of art that can and will be seen as controversial, you should at least have the decency to do your homework on the original work he comes from. Otherwise, to our eyes, you're taking the most wronged man from our beloved show, wronged due to his sexuality, and throw him together with a literal asshole just to see them fuck because they would look pretty (and that's an actual comment from one of the artists, I shit you not). Wouldn't you feel a bit angry about that? I bet you would.
What's worse, people loving Black Sails and not liking OFMD usually point out how narrow the representation is, how improbable the show is and how they're not remotely invested in the plot. It's a cheesy show for your average Sunday afternoon, don't make it into something it's not. It's not a political statement any more than Guess The Tune is.
What's more, when I've seen attempts at people pointing out the obvious flaws in plot, in logic (how many people crew that ship exactly? How is he not dead after being stabbed clean through with a sword?), all we've gotten was "Oh it's not that type of show, OBVIOUSLY", "it's just a comedy, duh" and my personal favorite "you just DON'T UNDERSTAND IT BOOMER". (I'm a late Millennial, thx). Every attempt was chucked out the window. What got me most, tho, was the high praise of OFMD IS THE FIRST SHOW TO [insert whatever queer thing it did supposedly]. No, it's not. There was even a post on twitter that debunked all those claims one by one. I get it, you're happy that you got your gay pirates, good for you. But give credit where credit's due, otherwise you're gonna piss off a lot of people. People who watched our show struggle and crawl so that your show can run today and be fine and accepted widely.
And personally, I felt disappointed watching it because of the lack of representation. Disappointed that Ed turned out to be just as rainbowy as Stede. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against rainbowy, ultra-sweet characters that are big softies. I love them. But not everyone in the lgbtq community is like that. Actually, it's the minority. There are your sweets, there are your glittery rainbows, but the majority is on the more... inconspicuous part of the scale. And there are edgy people (like myself) who don't like glitter, pink, feathers, fluff and a shitton of other things this show had in abundance. You know what made me wince while watching? When I realized that the only person who I could remotely like for the way they weren't so glittery-rainbowy-sweet was Izzy, and I hated him because he was an asshole. Even Jim got the fluffy af oranges arch. So not my (and others') cup of tea.
So yeah, our recent anger and rabidity is not based solely on one post about an insignificant poll (that you're winning only because our fandom is significantly smaller and most people are dispersed between different sites). It's all those things combined and it's the result of them.
And no, I'm not going to finish it with a "please forgive us if we seem a bit angery, we're coping". Flint wouldn't.

WREN 'OZ' OSWIN  / athlete / lesbian / they + them / brigette lundy paine
raised by a couple of zoologists who named all of their children after animals and dragged them around the world for their work, one of seven kids, grew up homeschooled and therefore chronically online in search of community and it shows, a goober who just happens to be tall and surprisingly athletic, the world's biggest romantic but they try to keep that on the low, in the wnba .
WYATT KILMER  / student / lesbian / she + they / sophie thatcher

why does it seem like every tv character with an established shitty relationship with a parent (whether abusive or otherwise) has to reconcile with them lol i hate it so much
[context: this post on billy and eliot]
i have no fucking idea, other than that lev:red found ways to insist on your current (queer) found family is not enough to soothe one's soul. there is no true going forward, if you havent gone backward in order to fix something that we didnt see as broken; instead, it was a complexity that humbly fades into the background of the cool characters we love to untangle in our own projections.
reconciliation is not always the answer. the pressure to reconcile (and specifically to do so before i was ready) did irreparable damage. sometimes things happen where we came from, but we find our people. it is not a wish fulfillment fantasy i feel is necessary for leverage. archies first episode ended with difficult parent relationship done right: parker, realizing archie is not who she wanted him to be but settling into the fact that she has family now. real family. they backtracked in the last dam job, sadly.
billys wife, eliots mom, the REASON billy gave up on eliot due to the funeral absence.... she didnt warrant a first name.
they also did the billy&eliot from the other side with sophie and her first crew, but especially sophie with her stepdaughter. sophie didn't need to have a mothering role thrown on her after six seasons without it being mentioned or hinted at. (dont you think that when nate was grieving once against over sam, sophie might have mentioned ANYTHING about being a parent??). sophie suddenly became a Bad Mother that we had to just accept haunted her. and then astrid (A FUCKING SUPER COP, UGH ACAB, HATE THAT LEVERAGE LOVES COPS SO MUCH) had to just.... reconcile with the woman who broke her father's heart, broke her heart, and is still working with the tools that helped deceive her father.
is that was redemption is to lev:red? tracing back the supposed "core" of you (bio/in-law family) so you can confess your wrongs and get a stern pat on the back? maybe nate is there as a ghost but as the earlier version where he was a priest, cuz this is all sounding mighty catholic to me......

9, 12 ,14, 25 for the end of year asks !!
9. best month for you this year?
june! i did the most writing i've ever done, saw newsies with my friend ceriann, met ryan kopel for the first time, started to genuinely engage with fandom after years, made a bunch of great friends, got a massive boost in my confidence - spectacular, really.
12. talk about a new friend you made this year
DAVEY!! my dear friend davey you are so skilled and so hardworking and so genuinely kind that it actually surprises me. i have been the most obnoxious nihilist for,,, years and it's quite rejuvenating for the soul i think to be surrounded by kind and genuine people, and you're a big part of that. i'm so grateful for your constant support and i'm so happy i got to support you in return by delivering your art to the newsies cast at musical con and get you that video of them, too :) and i still can't get over the manhattan wv drawing you did!! was not expecting it at all but oh my god it's wonderful. you're such a creative and hardworking person davey, it keeps on inspiring me. i hope good things keep happening to you - i'm so grateful for all your support and to have you as a friend :)
14. favorite book you read this year?
WRANGLESTONE!! yeah i read a lot of more Classic and Scholarly books for my classes but wranglestone was my 'treat myself' book - i got it when i went to see billie the kid because i wound up walking past 'gay's the word' by pure accident so i decided to make a big queer day of it and treated myself to a fun little gay zombie cowboy novel. and god i love it. i'm not a Classic and Scholarly writer and i've always been a little ashamed of that but this book reminded me i don't need to be :) there are people who want and need the kind of stories i want to tell, and i'm one of them. this book's so special to me for that. and yknow, it helps that it's a genuinely good adventure with a cute romance, a compelling mystery and excellent worldbuilding.
25. did you create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year? describe one
i think the only characters i created this year were alice, maggie and florence for run boy run... i HAVE been noodling an oc for a children's book series concept i have though! haven't decided on a name or design but i know i want him to be a cowboy who rides a utahraptor and has a little hunting crew of smaller velociraptors he's rescued (i actually had this idea before reading wranglestone btw. cowboy media just calls to me)

My media this week (12-18 Feb 2023)
Tumblr media
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊 "List of People Who Disappeared Mysteriously at Sea" (Jen Myers) - nicely eerie short story
😊 In The Market For Murder (Lady Hardcastle Mysteries #2) (T.E. Kinsey, author; Elizabeth Knowelden, narrator) - again, I'm a fan of the breezy 'not-super-serious-about-historical-accuracy-in-the-small-details' tone; I really like that Flo & Lady H have this backstory/history that we only find small bits about here and there
😍 Same As It Ever Was (QuokkaFoxtrot) - 62K, Steddie - EXCELLENT time-loop fixit AU
🥰 Cabin Pressure - Series 1: Abu Dhabi to Fitton (John Finnemore, author; Stephanie Cole/Roger Allam/Benedict Cumberbatch/John Finnemore, voice cast) - entertained again by the crew of MJN Airlines
😍 Matchmaker, Matchmaker, Make Steve a Match (BlueSimplicity) - 209K, shrunkyclunks - omegaverse (but fairly nontrad, no mpreg) - the slow burn tag is not inappropriate but also it kind of doesn't FEEL that slow! deep worldbuilding, excellent epistolary component, incredible OC's, the differences/subversions of trad omegaverse tropes gave me clowfish AU vibes, which I loved
😍 Will Wonders Never Cease (PorcupineGirl) - 56K, zimbits AU, You've Got Mail/She Loves Me fusion - magic's real, Bitty's a tech witch with a very cute familiar - read this in one sitting and my face hurt when I was done from smiling so much
🥰 Luke and Billy Finally Get a Clue (Cat Sebastian) - novella, set in 1953; to paraphrase the official description: two best friend pro ball players finally figure their shit out, featuring: inclement weather, only one (real) bed and some hurt/comfort. Technically this is set in the Cabot Universe but there are zero Cabots in this one. Cat continues to score home runs on vibes alone. I love her books so, so much!
💖💖 +189K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
I Want You to Find Me (PorcupineGirl) - Check Please!: zimbits, 23K - canon-divergent AU where Bitty's a camboy that catches Jack's attention (while also still being his former teammate and all)
Ruin me (rainbow_nerds) - Stranger Things: steddie, 11K - absolutely cannot get enough of a reunion/2nd chance fic!!!!! fluffy AF!
Critical Feline Mass (Kryptaria, zooeyscigar) - MCU: stucky, 39K - no-powers AU where they're both retired military, Steve rents an apt to a still-struggling-to-reintegrate Bucky & sparks (and feelings) fly. also there are a lot of adorable kittens.

Gemstones Episode 1.6 Review, Continued: Scotty flirts, BJ is spanked, and Kelvin says "Let's hook up."
This is a continuation of Episode 1.6 Review: Kelvin sees Keefe's cock, and gets a big head.  Sounds like a fun evening
Earlier in this episode we saw a lot of innuendos about Kelvin and Keefe's relationship going to the next level.  Now it's time to concentrate on Gideon and Scotty.
Tumblr media
They are very rude: Since the van is gone, Scotty has to live in a tent. Why doesn't Gideon spring for a cheap hotel?   Gideon tries to help him set it up, but he goes dark again: "I'm tired of this shit, and I'm tired of your fucking family! They are very rude people!"  But at least he looks hot in a black vest with no shirt.
"It's in my uncle's garage," Gideon tells him.  Completely ransacked, with all of Scotty's stuff taken.  Scotty is irate: he needed that stuff!
Cut to Jesse and Kelvin informing the crew that they have the van. Inside they found a sleeping bag, tongs, a copy of L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics (so Scotty is a Scientologist?), some potato chips, some beans, soiled Q-Tips, and yellow, crusty paper towels. Conclusion: the blackmailers are "fucking amateurs."
Suddenly all of them get a phone call from Scotty.  He wants his van and his stuff back, or "I'm a fuck your life in the ass."  I'm surprised no one riffed on that.  "I'm a release the video."  Scotty and Gideon clasp hands.
Jesse doesn't think he has the video, and tells him to fuck off.
My Slim 3: After scenes with Baby Billy and Judy at the Salvation Center, rehearsing. and Jesse and his crew (without Kelvin) throwing their ceremonial coins into the swamp, we return to the campground.  Gideon has brought lunch for the two of them (Subway-type hoagies). but Scotty goes beserk, destroys his sandwich, and yells that he's going over to the Compound right now to kill Jesse.  Gideon points out that this will keep them from getting the millon dollars.  Scotty gives up the plan, and grabs Gideon's sandwich, a "Slim 3."
Tumblr media
Kelvin comes out on top: Meanwhile, no doubt as a reward for his success with Dot Nancy, Eli has assigned  Kelvin the job of learning enough Swahili to greet the Kenyan refugees who will be welcomed into the church on Sunday   He's already learned fuju karibu, which means "mess around," "have sex."  (He wanted karibu, welcome."  Uh-oh.)  Judy disapproves, and physically assaults Kelvin.
Why Kenya, when it's a haven for refugees, not a source  (it's the 13th largest asylum country in the world, with 650,000 refugees)?  Maybe because Swahili is the most well-known African language (viewers might not recognize Hausa or Xhosa). Or because it's 60% Protestant, so joining the Salvation Center makes sense.
Jambo instead of Karibu: After a scene where Jesse tries to reconcile with Gideon (they admit that they "like" each other), we cut to the church.  As the Kenyan refugees file onto the stage. Kelvin says "Jambo!" and tries to make small talk with each ("I like your outfit!"), and Keefe hands each a white rose.  Two takeaways here: Kelvin is pushing up the flamboyance, and he and Keefe are already inseparable.
Meanwhile, Eli yells at Baby Billy for stealing his daughter ("Just like you took Aimee-Leigh").  The incest runs hot and heavy with these guys.
The full review, with a nude Kenyan bonus, is on RG Beefcake and Boyfriends

do you think that Elvis’s rumored affair with Nick Adams has any validity to it? personally; I think no but I guess no one really knows except for them. I think Nick Adams followed him around for a little while the same way he did with James Dean (for exposure and fame). I think it was Billy Smith who said Elvis felt bad for Nick because he was an outcast and Elvis had a whole crew of outcasts and he related to them. And the fact that Dee Stanley did that dumb tabloid article saying that it was true makes me believe it is completely not true because I don’t trust anything Dee says. I wondered if you have done research about it and what do you think? It’s def interesting imo
Dearest Nonnie non a non non,
Today, I do not... but I also have not thoroughly researched this topic so take everything I say with a grain of salt. I'm definitely curious to hear what others who have been fans longer have to say...
Maybe you are asking because of my fic The Only Sure Thing, and some scenes with Nick.....while I did at one time think maybe Elvis had been bisexual after reading this piece, the more books I read based somewhat on real research, even accounting for bias, the more I just don't think that is the case.
I stand by those scenes because I do believe that Nick was probably bisexual, that Elvis worshiped James Dean and liked that connection with Nick, and Elvis probably associated Nick with his early break through and fame... i think a part of Elvis was always nostalgic for 1955 - 57 when he was first really breaking through on a national scale and it was new and exciting, and Nick was a part of that. It is also my impression that Elvis would be intensely close or intimate with people he felt comfortable with, seeking out love and friendship and approval, and that, combined with his flamboyancy and emotional and sensitive nature , these things can make Elvis seem bisexual or seem somewhat androgynous. But I don't think he had affairs with men. I do think its possible that Nick was attracted to him, while also being jealous of his success and resenting him. I also don't see him pop up in stories much after the initial return to Hollywood in 1960, but I haven't read his daughter's bio.... However, I think if Elvis had bisexual there just would be more stories about it by now, I do. A lot of that stuff comes out after death, consider Rock Hudson or Liberace. I liked using Nick Adams in TOST because I like showing this side of the industry and Hollywood history and also because it fit my narrative goals.
For me, it wouldn't matter, and I believe fic is here for people to have those fantasies if it brings them pleasure.
OH and I will say that even though I don't think E was banging dudes, he is such a queer icon.... leather daddies, lace shirts.... tell me "Jailhouse Rock" is not the GAYEST song you ever heard? Is there any doubt that #47 and # 3 are both men? The song writers Leiber & Stoller were always going overboard on purpose with their lyrics to intentionally be camp and ridiculous. This is a reading of "Jailhouse Rock" I stand by.
thanks for sending this, curious to hear from others who know more,
xoxox

I'm reading the script for episode 1 and the one interesting change is that the Scarborough showing up is in the original script immediately much bigger a deal. It's why the crew want to turn against Flint. It makes people of Nassau nervous. Eleanor wants The Walrus to sink it. It's a bigger deal than the show initially ended up making it in the episode.
Billy has much bigger presence in the script. There's a moment with Billy at R. Guthrie's house where he's nervous and trying to part his hair which idk is a nice bit of characterisation. There's few extra moments that hint at the conflict between Billy and Flint later on. Also they have a bigger fight with the Scarborough crew at Guthries. Billy and Flint have quite a few conversations in the script including Billy trying to gauge Flint's motivations in all of this (Spoilers: it's queer rage buddy).
And there's more hints to Flint's cultured background. He recognises Oliver Cromwell painting. He also has an easel with unfinished landscape painting in his cabin which... Flint PAINTS?? And the captain's log that Silver is looking for is under a loose floorboard along with few OTHER books. Which you know exactly which book he's hiding there. The one that he cherishes the most.
Tumblr media
Excuse me this exchange is making me slightly insane!!! They moved this speech to episode 2 and he says it to Eleanor which to me doesn't hit as much as when he says it to Billy.
There's a moment where Gates does a weird blood oath with Mosiah, the black leader, that gets killed later in the episode, and I'm glad they cut that out 'cause it feels out of place and idk like orientalist. But also Gates is already clocking that Eleanor giving him the money so willingly is weird.
Eleanor has few moments with both Gates and Max where you see how she's doing this to keep her operation going 'cause she knows all of this is falling apart. It is a good characterisation they should have kept in. She comes of weird in the first episode when you don't really understand her motivations.
They describe Anne Bonny as "kinda hot" which is and UNDERSTATEMENT. But they also don't forget to mention "Something is very wrong with this lady" which i love as an introductory description of Anne.
They made Max religious??? Trying to think how that would impact her storyline down the line.
A big divergence from the plot is that in the script they don't actually manage to take Richard Guthrie hostage. And also Vane was about to straight up start shooting at Walrus if Flint wins the fight with Singleton and Eleanor stops him by using the fort's cannons to shoot at The Ranger. The end of the episode ended up quite different from the draft actually.

Cus I'm in too deep I gotta write out my thoughts on Billy Hargrove from Stranger Things.
I think the biggest divide between Billy fans and those that hate him only depend on what vision for the character you follow. Either the Duffer bros or Dacre Montgomery's. The Duffer bros wanted a classic human villain that everyone hates. A jackass who is unredeemable and you cheer when they get their comeuppance. Someone you might hate even more than the supernatural villain.
Dacre saw a traumatized kid who was redeemable and was a product of his abuse. Someone who acted out because of his father was a shitheel and beat him. Who was trying to prove his masculinity to his father and possibly suppress anything seen as queer. He was in charge of 'caring' for max which meant enforcing his father's rules and expectations. He became an extension of his father.
Billy fans usually go with that portrayal. Someone who could be redeemed and been a major part of the crew. A kid who broke a cycle of abuse and learned to embrace himself. A kid that learned and apologized and bettered himself. And maybe a kid who got to beat the shit out of his shitty father too.
So if you hate Billy that's OK. You are allowed to hate characters it was just something I had been thinking about.
Also there is a great article of Billy being queer that resonated deep which is another part of it for me.

Hey! I wanted to ask you what do you think about robin in general/how the duffer brothers handled her ""romantic"" story.
In my opinion
1. She doesn't seem the same character from season 3. Many people on tumblr say that she's coded to be neurodivergent. Idk, I'm not neurodivergent so I can't say if it's true or false. But I didn't like her that much not bc of that but bc she seems a completely different character (at least to me) and I was expecting s3 robin.
2. I didn't like Vickie at all. And she had a relationship with a jock that was from the crew of the psycho bullies. And like she was shopping at the war zone (or however that shop was called) to hunt an high schooler, so I think she has something in common with him. I couldn't care less about her. In the last episode I hated how she reunited with robin. I thought that robin was going to have a crush on the cute black girl that gave them things to do to help. I would have preferred a new character to fall in love with, and hopefully to know better the next season. Vickie just complained that she dumped her jock bully bf and then talked awkwardly about the sandwich she made. Like, I know that was supposed to mirror robin gay panicking and we should feels sympathy, but I hated it. I want a nuanced queer romance, like all of the straight couples. But yeah, the duffers also did will so dirty, so I have no expectations.
Btw I was also disappointed by the whole finale, but that's another rambling
I do think she has anxiety, I just don’t know if that classifies as being neurodivergent. I did feel like she appeared way more in season 3, and her personality felt more “light” I guess compared to her on season 4.
I didn’t have anything against Vickie until that scene with her boyfriend. She really seemed like she liked Robin in a romantic way and it’s kinda confirmed that after she catches Robin looking at her at the store. Her character it’s just a shame, she barely appears in the entire season.
And yeah! I really thought Robin was going to have something with that girl. If Vickie liked Robin in a more than friends way, it was a weird thing talking about her bf/ex bf to Robin.
Will’s arc infuriated me even more. He was just used for Mike and El’s relationship. I cried seeing that scene in the van between him and Mike.
From the way the duffers were talking about the finale I thought it would be a way more sad ending. I was expecting one of the main characters to die. This season felt like a part 1 of season 5, you know? The other seasons didn’t give the same vibes. Like, season one is focused on getting Will back and introducing El, season 2 focuses more on El finding her sister and all of that, season 3 focuses on the Russians and the weird things happening with Billy and other people, but season 4 and 5 (as it seems) will both focus on Vecna/One. I think it will be too repetitive.
