Leveragetober23 Day 3: family
Soon after Breanna came to live with Nana, she got a visit from one of her new big brothers. Nana was all in a tizzy for a few days beforehand, when she first learned one of her children would be coming back home for a few days. Apparently Hardison was a legend around here. Nana was baking like crazy, and when Breanna built up the courage to ask why she was making so much food, she learned that her "big brother and his partners" would be coming to stay with them.
Now, Breanna was pretty open minded, her parents raised her well, but she will admit she did a slowblink when she was first told. No one else seemed to have any thoughts on that topic, no weird or judge-y faces from any of the other children in hearing range, so she shrugged and went with it.
When they finally arrived, she was only more intrigued. Hardison could best be described as a whirlwind. He moved fast and talked faster. His two friends, on the other hand, were the direct opposite. They both smiled when talking to others, and answered rather succinctly, but otherwise they didn't move very fast, and in the scheme of things, barely talked at all.
Breanna wasn't quite sure what to do with them. She had accepted her parents were gone, and her definition of family had to change rather quickly, but every time she met a new child of Nana's, it hit her again how much her life had changed over the last two-ish years. Therefore, she was back in her room, decompressing a bit after meeting Hardison and his "partners."
(After meeting them, she honestly couldn't tell if they were romantic-partners or business-partners. They talked about work, a lot. They were vague about it, but they obviously worked together. On the other hand, Parker was a very clingy person with both Hardison and Eliot. Inevitably she would be hanging off one of them, touching them in some way. Hardison and Eliot were known to share a knowing look with each other too, whenever Parker did something. Parker and Eliot always made sure an orange soda was in Hardison's reach, and Parker and Hardison would make googly eyes whenever Eliot even just talked about cooking.)
A knock on her door distracted her.
She opened her door to reveal a slightly nervous looking Parker, who kept checking over her shoulder while she asked if she could hide in Breanna's room for a little bit. Breanna was unsure about this new person, but eh, why not? When she said as much, Parker beamed and thanked her while sliding inside and sitting on the ground behind where the door would hinge open.
Okayyyy. Breanna hesitantly sat down criss cross apple sauce, facing her. "Not to, like, stop you or anything…but, why are we sitting on the ground, exactly?"
Parker looked at her with a sharp eye. "Well, I'm sitting on the ground. You just decided to do it because I did. Sophie says that has to do with psychology, but I don't remember which theory right now."
"Hey! It feels perfectly reasonable right now to go to ground when the only adult in here right now is doing the same!" Breanna pouted, but all she got back was a small smile from Parker. "And hey, don't distract me! Why are we on the ground?"
Parker laughed, then suddenly went quiet. Breanna started to open her mouth to ask her what was happening when Parker suddenly whipped her hand up to stop her from speaking. A few moments later Breanna heard footsteps walking down the hall, pausing at the end, then turning around and walking back to the main part of the house.
Once she was sure whoever it was was gone, she lowered her hand. Breanna was even more curious now, and slightly worried. She knew Nana, and she knew how she raised her children, but either way there was another woman in her room, an adult, who seemed to be hiding from the other adults. Breanna needed to know what was going on.
Parker must have been able to read her face because when she turned her head back towards the younger girl, she immediately started to explain.
"Okay, so to be honest, I've gotten wayyy better with people. Like, way better. I haven't stabbed anyone with a fork in two months, Hardison and Sophie are really proud of me. But there are still a lot of people out there, and they were starting to get loud, and I don't like loud. Loud means notice and I don't like to be noticed, so I went to the place I was sure no one would check because I know Hardison, which means I know Nana, which means I know they will give you privacy because new people are around, which means people are way less likely to come looking for me in here, and when Nana introduced you, you were really quiet, so you are not likely to be as loud as it is out there. So, safe space."
Breanna's head was reeling from trying to keep track of…all of that but yeah, it made sense, in a weird way. She was the newest kid, and one of the previous kids was coming home to visit for the first time since she arrived, plus they were bringing other people too, so Nana was likely to quietly tell everyone to give her some space.
Breanna nodded definitively. "Okay, that makes sense. But…floor?"
Parker nodded, very serious, "First lesson: even when you're hidden, don't assume you're safe, always hide somewhere in a hidden place. Then you're way less likely to be caught" She paused, eyeing Breanna's head speculatively. "You have really curly hair. That's good. You can hide a lot of things in there, lots of pins, maybe even a key or two." Another pause, Breanna felt like her soul was being weighed. "Do you want to learn how to pick a lock in less than 5 seconds?"
Oh, they were going to be friend-friends. "Okay!"

Prompt 19: job gone wrong
When a job goes wrong and falls apart, Eliot, Hardison and Parker lay low at Nana's house for a bit. (Under the cut.)
Eliot felt blood well up in his nose and begin running down his face into his mouth. More blood ran down his face from a cut on his forehead. He spat out a mouthful of blood and turned to face the last of the mark's goons. The job had fallen apart so fast that Eliot wasn't sure what had initially gone wrong.
Parker and Hardison had already made it out safely and were waiting for him in the van, but their cover was blown and Eliot still had to fight his way out. These guys were good. Much better than average. Eliot had already taken out five of them, but not before sustaining several hard blows to the head and a few cracked ribs. He was pretty sure his shoulder was dislocated too. His head was pounding and his vision was starting to get blurry. The world seemed to tip and spin around him, but he couldn't pass out, not until he was absolutely sure Parker and Hardison were safe. If he passed out now they'd try to come in after him and risk their own lives. He couldn't let that happen.
The last goon rushed towards him and Eliot threw his hands up to block a punch. He caught the goon's arm and managed to twist it behind his back then shoved the goon into the wall. The goon hit the wall hard but didn’t go down.  Eliot drove his knee into the goon’s stomach then used his elbow to hit him in the head. That did the trick. The goon collapsed to the floor.
Eliot stumbled to the exit, blinking in the sudden sunlight.
Parker was waiting by the open door of the van and Hardison was in the driver seat. As soon as she saw Eliot exit the building she ran to him.
“Here, lean on me.” she said, slipping his arm over her shoulders, and helped him walk the rest of the way to the van.
***
Nana sat by the window reading a book and sipping her warm tea. Occasionally she'd glance out the window to watch the snow falling silently outside. She hated the cold but she loved the way the falling snow looked under the orange glow of the street lights at night.
She looked up from her book when she heard the phone ringing. She sighed and got up to answer it. If someone's calling this late in the evening it better be important.
"Hello?"
"Nana, it's me." She heard Hardison's voice on the other end of the call.
He sounded stressed.
"Alec, it's late. you should be in bed."
She knew her son was almost never in bed before midnight, but she had to try.
"No, Nana. We were doing a job and things went south. We need a place to stay and lay low for a couple days. Can we come over?"
"Are you close?" Nana thought they were all the way in New York for a job the last time she checked, not anywhere near home.
"We're a couple hours away."
"Well, why didn't you tell me you were in the area?"
"We were going to, I promise. We were just gonna wait till we finished the job."
"Well hurry up and get here then." Nana ordered. "I'll have a couple of beds made up for you by the time you get home."
"Thank you, Nana!" Hardison said
"We love you, Nana!" She heard Parker call.
"Love y'all too." Nana chuckled to himself as she hung up the phone.
Alec had found himself a good couple of people to be with. She was glad they were there to have his back.
***
Hardison and Parker both helped Eliot out of the van and up the front steps to Nana's house. He was almost completely relying on them to keep him upright.
Hardison rang the doorbell and they waited. Only a few seconds later Nana was at the door. She gasped when she saw Eliot bleeding from several cuts on his face.
"What happened to you?" She demanded.
"Long story." Eliot muttered.
"Well, come in quick! It's freezing out." Nana stepped aside to let them through the door. "But be quiet. The kids are sleeping."
The three of them followed Nana inside to the living room. There was an air mattress in the middle of the room and  blankets and pillows on the couch. Nana took Eliot's arm and helped him to the couch.
"Alec, go get the first aid kit. Parker, go get a bag of peas from the freezer." She ordered.
"Ya'know I can do this myself." Eliot said as Nana took the first aid kit from Hardison and opened it up to begin treating Eliot's wounds.
"No you can't." Nana glared at him. "Because I’m not going to let you.”
"Okay." Eliot knew there was no point in arguing.
Nana looked up at Parker and Hardison.
"Do you two really let him treat his injuries all by himself?" Nana scolded
"We try, Nana. I promise. But he almost never lets us help."
Nana turned her scolding look on Eliot.
Eliot opened his mouth, trying to come up with a defense, then closed it again, looking sheepish. Nana had that effect on people.
When she had finished helping Eliot with his injuries she took the bag of peas from Parker and pressed them against Eliot's head.
"Hold those there." She said, before heading for the kitchen. "I made you guys some dinner. Parker, why don't you come help me carry it to the living room."
Parker followed Nana obediently into the kitchen. You never said no to Nana.
“Parker, be honest with me. How often does this job put you guys in this much danger?” Nana asked as soon as they were out of earshot of the others.
“Only occasionally. But we always keep Hardison safe. We wouldn’t let anything happen to your son.” Parker promised
Nana smiled.
“Well that’s good. I'm glad to hear that you look after him, but Alec isn’t the only one I’m worried about.”
“We take care of Eliot too. I promise.” Parker added quickly. “We all look out for each other. It’s rare that Eliot gets hurt this bad. Me and Hardison make sure of that.”
Nana nodded as she filled four bowls with warm soup.
“Okay. That's all I needed to know.”
She handed two of the bowls to Parker and took the other two and they carried them back to the living room.
Eliot was laying down on the couch with the bag of peas on his forehead and Hardison was sitting on the arm of the couch by Eliot's head. They were quietly bickering about something.
“Here, sit up.” Nana said and handed one of the bowls to Eliot. Parker handed a bowl to Hardison and they all crammed onto the couch next to Eliot to eat.
"Alright, you guys get some sleep." Nana said when they had all finished eating. "The kids'll be up around nine for breakfast, but you guys are welcome to sleep later than that if you want. I’ll try to keep the kids quiet for you.”
Nana took the dishes and left the three of them to settle down for bed.
Nana tried not to worry about them as she laid down for bed.
They’re strong and smart and they know what they’re doing. She told herself, but it didn’t help much.
They were part of her family, all three of them, which meant she would never stop worrying about them. At least she knew they would always have each other’s backs when a job went wrong.

Hardison was all self-conscious about living with Nana in The Rashomon Job, but it was five years earlier, and Nate says he's 24 in The San Lorenzo Job, so he was like . . . 19. Honey, you don't gotta be self-conscious about living with your mama ever when you're 19.

i was thinking about how i wished leverage had a birthday episode for some of the characters cause that would be sweet, but then i realised something and basically…. okay here’s my thoughts in quotes form, just for fun
hardison: so when’s your birthday? i could plan something for us and the team to do and-
parker: i dont know
hardison: you don’t know… your own birthday?
parker: no, how would i know? pshh, cmon, you’re telling me you remember EXACTLY when you were born? watch this - hey, eliot, do you know your exact birth date?
eliot, innocently passing by, who was canonically anonymously dropped off at a hospital as an infant: no, how would i know?
parker: that’s what i said!
hardison: excuse me?? what is going on right now
sophie, walking into the apartment: whats wrong?
hardison: parker and eliot- well, okay, when’s your birthday? i just have to prove something.
sophie: …….july 12th
hardison: why did you pause? wait, is that your birthday or sophie devereaux’s birthday?
sophie: ………… (guilty silence)
parker: see, no one knows their real birthday! haha you’re so weird sometimes, hardison
hardison:
hardison: what the fuck guys
#leverageposting#wren speaks#leverage#parker leverage#alec hardison#nate knows his birthday i guess so i didn’t include him. if he was watching the whole time he would probably say ‘idk’ to mess w hardison#they’re having this convo in nate’s apartment but it’s like 3am & he’s asleep & they’ve all broken in to hang out#parker doesn’t know either bc of her ridiculously neglectful foster parents or bc she’s parker & her priorities are simply different to most#people. her birthday is irrelevant to thievery. and sadly probably not related to fun happy memories anyway.#sophie obviously is a good enough grifter to answer confidently but she feels a little bad abt lying to her family by now#meanwhile hardison had a normal foster nana who would have known his bday. most kids aren’t safe-surrendered like eliot so assumably#hardison would have a known bday. and he likes birthdays!#and he wants to throw parker a little party even if it’s a very unconventional parker bday that involves rappelling & jumping off buildings#but he is once again thwarted by the leverage team members having the strangest possible lives#he IS gonna give them each birthday parties tho. even if he has to make up some dates & stuff#sophie’s can be the fake date she gives if that’s what she rlly wants. nate’s real birthday is on file somewhere even if he’s being annoying#rn so hardison just has to do some basic hacking. eliot would have an approximate bday such as the day he was surrendered that his parents#would have celebrated throughout childhood. and parker’s would be april 1st bc that’s alice whites bday (and YOURE ALICE!!!)#as in it’s canonically in the online info abt alice white shown in the juror no.6 job & obvs that’s april fools so it’s funny :)#and hardison has a NORMAL bday unlike SOME ppl and yes he DOES expect presents you heathens!!

What if Hardison naming his van Lucille is a shout-out to watching Fresh Prince of Bel-Air after school and, like a lot of latchkey/lonely kids, forming an attachment to Uncle Phil while daydreaming about being wanted and loved and chosen, the way a lot of kids in the system feel.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!
Friendly reminder today Eliot is making a feast and slapping Parker's hand away from all the desserts.
Breanna and Hardison are sitting there judging Eliot's food making skills.
Harry and Sophie are drinking wine.
And Nana is the only other one helping in the kitchen.
All for a proper Thanksgiving!

I know that Aldis Hodge is busy and can't be here much this season, but between getting some of Sophie's backstory and Eliot's? I really feel like this might be the season we finally meet Nana. Especially since it could reveal as much about Breanna's life and childhood as it could Hardison's

Thanks for the ask! One headcanon about Breanna coming right up!
Once Breanna realized she was gay she got really worried about trying to keep it a secret from Nana. She wasn't sure how Nana would react if she found out, but she also knew it would be really hard to keep anything a secret from Nana. She had heard several of the other foster kids saying things like "Nana always finds out." Or "can't keep a secret from Nana." (Not in relation to Breanna being gay, just in general.)
Eventually Breanna felt comfortable enough to talk it over with Hardison. Hardison assured her that Nana would be fine with it, so she decided to come out to her. After that Breanna was really glad she did. It was a huge weigh off her shoulders plus Nana was really supportive in all the right ways.

So this thought occurred to me and I need to share it.
Harry gets to meet Nana (maybe Thanksgiving or something?) and the old girl likes what she sees. Nothing real comes of it of course but she flirts with him for fun. You know how old ladies will do the whole "What a strong young man you are" and "oh, if I were twenty years younger" and Harry is more than happy to play along to make her smile.
Then he realizes how uncomfortable it makes Breanna and Hardison and there's no way he's not gonna use that.
He sits next to Breanna at the briefing tables and puts his hand over hers.
"I know you're too old for a dad. But I hope we can be friends."
"Boy, if you don't."
Spots Hardison playing video games.
"Are ya winnin', son?"
"You better stop all that nonsense."
"C'mon. Why don't you take a break and come throw the old pig skin around?"
"I'll knock you out. Eliot taught me how, I can do it."

At least for the aspec part of the leverage fandom, I’m guessing it’s the heavy themes of found family between the entire crew and the queer platonic vibes of the OT3
yeah. yeah. oh man. like we have a story that prioritises relationships that aren't shown to us as romantic just as highly as the relationships that are, and we have parker who regardless of how you interpret her can be read as a-spec and loved and supported by the people around her and that's great, and we have a happy ending that says "actually, our tough guy (who doesn't seem to settle down with anyone romantically, though we see him date) would be most fulfilled with hardison and with parker, with no explicit romance, but with a lifelong promise of mutual devotion."
(it's a very important thing to me that the story works like that, with parker+eliot+hardison being totally platonic. I love other readings. I do. but what we were given, viewed through the least shippy goggles available, works. and it packs a hell of a punch.)
and listen, I've said it before but "my nana used to say that what's normal is whatever works for you" is such a beautiful sentiment to be applied to SO many things (gender, neurodiversity, queerness, polyamory, queerplatonic relationships, choosing a life of crime instead of a 'proper' career, etc), and it is lovely.
which is to say… yeah. agreed. it's great. and it does make sense. :D
