if i can be corny for a second i wanna talk about the greatest strengths of the 2003 tmnt series and why it speaks to me (esp as a queer person)

so i might have alluded to this before, but let me say it outright: each show is definitely a product of its time, and the ideals of whatever generation its from. whether talking about the humour, the story, the dialogue etc, its always important to remember that these shows will always come off in a way due to the generation theyre from. and thats not a bad thing! it just means its important to think about them from that perspective.

2003 is a show of my generation growing up, and a thing about that era that maybe some people younger than me wont understand is there is so much more language commonly available to describe yourself now than there was then. you can take this in any context; mental health, sexuality, gender identity, or even just the ability to describe your relationships with more (idk if this will be the right word) therapist language.

in 03 we have a family unit of splinter and his sons, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. we have a splinter who hasnt opened up to his sons about the trauma hes experienced, but not in a way of shutting them out, simply because it isnt their responsibility to know as they are teenagers. he tells them of the mutagen that created them, but not of his past with his master yoshi, who he calls father when by himself, but never around his sons which is just an interesting concept to think about.

(i do not intent this next sentence as ragging on the two shows after this when i say it, simply from a character standpoint) this is the splinter who completely doesnt make his problems his sons problems, but he also is very willing to tell them the truth when he knows they're ready. this is is the most idyllic version of splitner out of all of them, even when comparing to his mirage counterpart (who hes the most based on) due to that splinter raising them to be ninja specifically to make them fight shredder. this one is just their father who loves them and wants to keep them safe the best way he can, and he was never a human in the first place to even know how to be that. so this whole family dynamic starts with him, and the way he raised his sons reflects his parenting.

so, the setting and year this show is made is 2003. something very relatable here is how there isnt a lot of language for the personality quirks of the turtles. there's so much evidence here for mikey having adhd, his brothers will say things like "why doesnt mikey have to help?" and the answer is "well, he'd be bored. and whats worse, mikey not helping or mikey being bored?" its this beautiful moment of, "hey, we know its not fair, but thats how mikey is, and its better for everyone if we just respect that thats how he is" mikey cant keep his hands off stuff, they know this they dont yell at him for behaving that way, they just stop him. this coding feels the most specific, but like i said. its 2003. we dont have the words to describe what this is yet, and if we do its not common knowledge.

another example is in the classic episode where raphael meets casey jones. raphael is sparring with mikey, and he lashes out and nearly kills mikey. everyone reacts to this by getting him to stop, and no one is more upset than raphael himself. they all tell him to go get some air, which he does. theres no moment of any of them screaming at him for losing his temper, its very clear that they all know he's going to do that himself. and he does go get some air. they all know thats what he needs. he goes and meets casey jones, another hot head, and raph has to help coach this hot head on his anger. when he comes back at the end of the episode after having let out that aggression, he apologizes and no one is upset with him. there's a very clear understanding among his family that he cannot help it, but the best thing they can do is give him his space when he needs it. watching this from a 2023 perspective (20 years later) im sure we could analyze this as a few things going on with raph, my mind comes to autism but at the end of the day it doesnt matter why he behaves like this, the point is that he does and the best thing his family does is just...help him. which they do. and they never hold it against him.

when leo is going through his ptsd arc hes at his closest to raph as a character, the show draws a lot of parallels (like having him go let out some aggression with casey) and we get to see the dynamic in reverse. in "i, monster" (the rat king episode) leo is losing it, taking on rat king alone and not wanting to let up. raphael is actively holding his brothers back when they say "we shouldnt leave him to fight alone", raphael says "if leo gets in trouble i'm the first one in there, but right now it looks like leo's got more than one monster to work out of his system" raph doesn't exactly know what leos going through, but he recognizes it. he knows he needs to fight alone, so raph lets him. its only when the building collapses and leo is no longer in a safe position that he says "leo lets go", which leo wordlessly agrees with and actually listens.

this is what i think is the best part of these guys, the unconditional understanding they have for the way they are. we still have our "raphs a big hot head" "mikeys annoying" jokes, but they feel like genuine good natured sibling ribbing because they know each other on that level.

and to go back to the fact that this show is set in 2003, there's something so specific about the way mikey constantly makes references to liking women's clothing, to being fine with feminine language, and to being open about being the pretty turtle who "has that effect on minds of men" speaks to me as a queer person. this could easily be intended as homophobic jokes and probably is, because again.... its the mid 2000s, thats very much what media was like, thats what the jokes were. especially with the girly screams mikey does being one of the first jokes of this nature.

but theres something that happens in season 4, where an alien is attacking mikey, and donnie rushes in and says "hey, thats my sibling" that sticks out. and it happens again in fast forward. when talking to the dark turtles leo says "you and your brothers" "me and my siblings"

because of the way this family unit just understands each other without ever having a conversation about things, it feels like its not a joke. theres some kind of affirmation happening here. even if it seems like i could be reading into it too much, its specific! and it keeps happening!

and by the end of the show, when mikey says he wants to be maid of honour, even if that line in the media itself was intended to be a joke, no one in their family treats it like one. of course mikey is the maid of honour, he asked to be one! the only real offence taken is when april says bride's maid, to which he is offended because hes so much more important than that!

so from a story standpoint, this show doesnt have the intricate complexities and butting heads of latter iterations, there isnt much relationship growth to be had (in fact once we get to around season 5 the flanderization of the characters kind of begins and it loses some of the more complexities) but thats because its just not the focus of the story! the story is more about what they go through together, and thats fine! thats what our shows kind of were at the time. not saying there isnt any relationship growth, but its very much not the focus because these turtles? they already understand each other in a healthy way.

so to me, these guys are kind of the most wholesome family unit

gray's return in the show and how it defines gray as a truly morally gray character

i just gotta ramble more abt this scene, with it being one of my favorite scenes in the show. but really i just wanna talk abt how this scene encapsulates gray's ... grayness... of the moral variety

especially since it is done so effectively since, like i mentioned in other posts, our screen time with actual gray and not graham or whatever is limited.

this scene sees the return of gray in the plot, picking up directly where we leave off from all the way back in episode 2

Bye-bye, Black Sheep...

I assume you prefer I continue to call you "Carmen"?

as i stated previously on other posts, because of the silly brainwashing plot, much of graham scenes can be thrown out. in a sense, it's the writers' way to put a big old pause on his character

and these are only one of the two conversations carmen and gray have in current day as themselves -- with no mind wiping or brainwashing (not including flashback cuz the actual issues of the relationship that need to be addressed havent been established yet)

so resuming directly right where we left off with gray trying to kill carmen, we return back to gray trying to kill carmen :D

but this time he did recongize carmen's name, alluding to his change ... even tho he is waving his electric stick around -- mirroring their last encounter in paris

side tangent: something i, additionally, love about this scene is just how it is blunt and honest. much of carmen sandiego's drama/conflict is built of misunderstanding and misdirection and mistrust of the characters. Which while, yes, i am eating up, but unfortuntely can cause many characters relationships to be burdened with a lot of things that can be easily cleared up with a talk. gray for once just bluntly takes a stance.

something that i do like is that in their only two scenes with each other as themselves, carmen (the pilot flashbacks) and gray (this scene) open up so fast with one another. there's never any miscommunication between them during these scenes .... well until vile barges into the conversation....

ANYWAY here we get revealed gray's full perception of himself and his goals very explicitly, especially since his memories and alliances was the biggest question over the viewers' head for most of the show

here gray explains that he believes that he is not a good person, someone incapable of change.

from his perspective, the only way he was able to be a "good" person was when he was brainwashed. and he had just had however long with his chats with maelstrom emphasizing that he has always been a bad person by nature. with the knowledge vile will forever have full control over him -- either as a vile operative or as a mindwiped civillian -- gray essentially accepts his fate as a bad person, because at the very least he is himself.

carmen may have gotten away from vile, but he is told by maelstrom it is due to her being a naturally good person. because his own perception of himself is as somebody who is incapable of good, he will never be able to leave vile now

and carmen is right there in front of him. it was his hesistance that landed him into this debacle, and with maelstrom and bellum both just past the door and carmen alone, gray has every chance to right his wrong.

but he doesnt. because he realizes that the very least he can make the choice of is never hurting carmen. as i stated in other posts, gray's main motive is to be free from any standard that could get in between him and his success. but his want for this freedom ironically got him trapped within following vile's orders. he had been so caught up in following vile that he had lost sight of himself and what he cares about.

so now he explains to carmen his absolute refusal to hurt her again, begging her to give up in stopping vile

selfish and selfless

But I'm begging you, give up trying to stop us, because I don't ever want to be put in a position to hurt you again.

gray's plea to carmen here is so perfectly two-sided

he is acting out selflessly in not allowing his alliances against carmen blind him. i mean that is what he fucked up last time in the train, where it was clear gray wanted to spare carmen - with giving her time to share her side of the story and providing the offer - put unwilling to stand against his mission. like an actual human being, gray acknowledges his mistake and is trying to amend it by stating clearly that he cares abt carmen.

he, in essence, is apologizing for trying to harm carmen by expressing his major regret. moreover, he acknowledges their chat in the pilot, accepting carmen will not return to vile. it stems likely from the ink blot scene earlier, where maelstrom speaks about nature, making a distinction between vile, and by extension, gray's, and carmen's morals. he is finally reconciling that he and carmen will not be on the same side, no matter how much he wants it to be otherwise.

it can also be viewed as a sense of wanting to protect carmen. because he feels so small compared to vile, he barely can ponder how anyone can actually succeed in going against them. i mean they brainwashed him and easily gave and took away his civilian life. in his eyes, carmen staying far from vile is the only way she could be safe

however, viewing it from another perspective shows gray's selfishness in his plea. when he speaks about never wanting to be put in a position to hurt carmen again, he kinda places such a responsibility on carmen, not recongizing he himself is capable of changing that.

Essentially saying "hey quit while you're ahead so you don't gotta make me feel guilty when doing crime" while ignoring that he is making the choice join vile

It kinda stems from his lack of faith in carmen or his own cowardice against vile or a combination of both. What may just be the only way he can protect to protect carmen comes off in his own lack of faith in her ability. as i mentioned earlier, this practically is his own resignation to his fate that vile cannot be fought against. he took his own defeat as the only way to be safe, refusing to believe carmen can successfully fight them.

while he was able to get past the hurdle of accepting carmen changing and no longer standing alongside him, he cant seem to understand his own responsibilty in this.

he's being selfish by demanding a change in carmen's behavior while he continue along with his own desires. While yes, i did just detail the various factors that led to him to such a conclusion, the window was LITERALLY OPEN for him to leave

following carmen blowing up the facility and rejecting gray's demand -- SHE IS SO REAL FOR THAT I LOVE HER SM IN THIS EP -- the wall LITERALLY IS OPEN FOR TO LEAVE CARMEN WITH

Goodbye, Gray

Idk how intentional this is, but the framing shows carmen literally, by her own will, forcing an opening for herself out of vile (both figuratively in the past and literally right now lol) while gray watches on idly, too scared to leave the grasp of vile but just watching on.

and his cowardice is followed through in the finale, with after months of idly watching carmen slip deeper into evil by the brainwashing, he actually takes actions against vile by actively choosing to work with acme, abandoning tigress, and being the one to land the memory recovery thing on her.

it is what makes gray such a stand out character in this show, admist his frustrating back-and-forth and selfishness and sometimes wasted writing. he keeps making a mistake but proceeds to fix it right after. his growth into a better person requires him to make these mistakes, because unlike carmen and most people in the show on the side of good, gray doesn't work on any moral compass. he is not actively evil and wishing to inflict harm and conflict like paper star or vile facilty, nor is he driven by morals such as team red and julia. he is driven by whatever he selfishly cares abt. and from what we see of him both in the pilot and this ep, he makes as many mistakes as he does have slivers of good actions

basically gray is an interesting character cuz he literally fucks up his personal goals, but he makes an earnest attempt to make it better lol

I really don't want to seen rude, but as a form of advice, i think oliver is at risk of becoming perfect, really he is patient, calm, collected, humble, kind, organized, etc. I love him as a character, but he doesnt seen to have many flaws who are really important for anrealistic character and breakes the ilusion of a perfect guy.

I mean he doesnt seen confortable talking about his past which isnt really a flaw but aside from that i really don't see any flaws or bad habits.

Really REALLY don't mean to be rude its just an observation I've made and maybe he has more flaws that I didnt notice

I understand the thought process there, but Oliver does have flaws they just aren't as obvious as characters like Sammy or James; Sammy is allergic to asking for help even if on the edge of death, and James is insecure about his worth and coming to terms with the fact that he used to be abusive.

Oliver on the other hand is usually written as the contrast to these sorts of characters; from their perspective he is unwaveringly kind and brave, so it's something that forces them to reconcile with their own behaviors and be better. This also means his flaws aren't seen as often because their flaws are focused on.

Oliver is flawed in a quiet way; something others don't see or recognize because from the outside looking in he seems perfect.

Oliver self-isolates. He masks. He tries not to let anyone's perception slip through his facade or else.

[To his coworkers he was known as a good worker; polite, well-received, compassionate. He wasn't friends with anyone though.

This didn't upset him in the slightest. He liked his quiet life, and whenever he got close to others they ultimately ended up discovering his past, rumours would spread, and then everyone would treat him differently again.]

The 'again' part there is important. Even though he says that it doesn't upset him in the slightest, his self-isolation was learned after getting close to someone before and that not going well.

[So things were fine like this. Quiet. Sometimes a bit lonely, but nothing Oliver couldn't handle. He stuck to his routine and that was that.]

His routine is a coping mechanism; it represents safety and comfort and allows him to not ever face his own issues until something breaks that routine (namely, James).

It's only after meeting James and seeing James be vulnerable that Oliver opens up about things in his own past, and he's always quick to move on from it. He always preaches about sharing your feelings without fear but when it comes to his past he deflects.

[Oliver cut himself off abruptly, remembering once again that his cousins were missing…and probably not even alive. Oliver turned his head to the side, brows furrowing in upset.

"Well… that's that."]

A lot of his flaws are still a mystery because they aren't shown as often, but obviously I as the writer are aware of them. In some unfinished stories he dissociates, drinks, and goes into self-loathing spirals (but obviously, because those are unfinished and unpublished I wouldn't expect people to know what I haven't shown lol).

Both human and borrower Oliver were told by their mother that they should have died instead. Borrower Oliver was told that mostly in reference to his sister when she drowned— and he blames himself for not being there when she needed him. Human Oliver's family all got in a car accident instead, and so he instead wishes he had been in the car (and he was originally supposed to be going in the car too) and died there, which is what his mother said.

He should have been there.

When his cousins went missing, Oliver just happened to be missing Sammy's birthday that year (both human and borrower Oliver), and he wishes he hadn't. I'll show a bit of an unfinished story;

[If Oliver knew that would have been his last chance to see them it wouldn't have mattered what he was doing— he would've been there. He should have been there.]

To James when he saw Oliver's wall of notes and pictures he saw it as a memorial of sorts; he found it sad but didn't recognize what it actually was; a constant reminder of the mistakes he made and who suffered because of it. Because yes, Oliver does blame himself even though he had very little control over how those tragedies played out.

[Oliver looked upon the note that he had attached to the wall as he sat at the edge of his bed; a mug of tea clutched so tightly in his hands that the tips of his fingers were turning white. It was no longer hot. He wasn't sure how long he had been reading and rereading the note, but it continued to taunt him again and again.]

Anyway. I hope that helped explain him a bit better— Oliver isn't supposed to be perfect, but he is definitely supposed to seem perfect. That's why I usually have other characters being the perspective of the story and actively thinking about how perfect Oliver is— when Oliver is alone and it's his own perspective, that's when you get the juicy bits.

AH. Idk if my ask went through so, I’ll just ask again in case. I don’t remember how much you care about Chosen and the Dark Lord as a dynamic, but I’m not an expert on them and you seemed to post about them quite a bit SO. May as well ask for your opinion. I can’t send links in anonymous asks, but Sweet Hangman by Elliotly to me feels like a song from the Dark Lord’s perspective about Chosen.

I care about them a whole lot and GOOD LORD does that song fit my intepretation of Dark very well

To me, theyre a pair of overpowered ultraviolent codependent freaks who had zero socialization outside of eachother. They had nothing but eachother for years and even so theyve yet to learn a lot about eachother. They know goddamn near everything about eachother, their little quirks, their icks, their fears, their violent moments, but they never really grow as people just by being with eachother. They dont agree on everything, in fact they disagree quite often and those disagreements often end in violent fights, theyre both godawful at communication and arguments often devolve into fists, but they cool down at the end and move on with their day, its just how they worked with eachother. They got a lot of issues tangled in each of themselves and the other party isn't very well equipped to untangle them so things just stay tangled or get even more tangled. They consider eachother their best friend, no one else in the world gets them because they've never gone out much into the rest of the world, they dont let people in easily, and their social skills are so fucking shot.

Now individually, Dark has a tendency to follow and serve people even if she doesnt realize that herself, she was created with a purpose and followed that purpose until it got her cornered and ever since Chosen took her hand shes just been following and doing what Chosen was doing, and she didnt really realize Chosen's change of heart and thought that he was just being a gloomy weirdo and pulling away from her for no reason so she tried to earn back his affections by planning to destroy the rest of the internet. Because thats what Chosen wouldve wanted, right?

Chosen is a gloomy weirdo who has trouble empathizing and has a tendency to be in his own head too much, he does genuinely care about Dark its just that he doesnt really see what she actually needs and doesnt really think of himself of any importance to have his actions have an impact on others. When he realized the destruction he created with Dark was going too far he hadnt thought to really communicate that to Dark because he just assumed that Dark would get it, because theyve always went off the little clues they get from the other instead of saying anything directly, so itll be fine, right?

Anyways the entirety of AvA 5 was just a gigantic lack of communication and misunderstanding and Dark had created the virabots and plan to destroy AlansPC with Chosen in mind but turns out Chosen wasnt cool with that!! And of course like every other time they disagree they Fight instead of communicating like well socialized people 😭

I still don’t understand the logic behind everyone urging guts to go on his own path and leave griffith after they rescued him, it annoys me to no end. It makes sense from a pushing-the-plot-forward standpoint but as in-universe logic i cant make sense of it. Casca saying if you want to be griffith’s friend and equal you should leave liiikkeee..….i dont think griffith gives a fuck about that anymore hes crippled!!???? The only explanation i could come up with is not so nice….and its that they dont care about making sense they just want guts out of the picture because it benefits them personally, like casca not having to share griffith with him anymore, and judeau maybe not having to see casca and guts together all the time? Idk it sounds mean so i dont want it to be that lol, but its like why is everyone acting like griffith lost all agency and doesnt get to have a say in who he wants in his life? why is everyone deciding for him knowing full well that's not what he would want? everyone knows how dependent his well being is on guts and yet….they dont care?

Just a heads up, it's my understanding that the term "cripple" or "crippled" is often considered dated and offensive these days when not being reclaimed, so it's probably better to say Griffith is disabled.

But anyway yeah I get what you're saying and I get why it can feel contrived. I've talked to other Berserk fans who have the same issue with these scenes.

But like I actually do think it makes sense both from a characterization perspective, and thematically.

Thematically everyone has to tell Guts to leave, because that's the consequence of the decision he made. And it does make sense imo because he did a very good job convincing Judeau and Casca that it's what's best for him and what he desperately wants and needs to do for himself and his own sense of worth etc. While they do theoretically have enough knowledge to realize that Guts doesn't need to strive to be Griffith's equal after he spent a year in a torture chamber because of Guts, it makes sense to me that that's not what they're thinking. They're not reading the story and picking up on the subtext, after all, they're just trusting what someone told them about his own goals without overanalysing it. Guts said he wants to pursue a dream the way Griffith did because he feels inadequate, and it makes sense to me that they take that at face value.

So to them it makes sense to think that Guts offering to stay and take care of Griffith isn't him realizing that the whole equality thing was bullshit, but him sacrificing his future potential glory because he feels like he owes Griffith.

Then on another level you do have those darker characterization notes that also, imo, make sense and help make it believable that Casca and Judeau would tell Guts to leave. Judeau has been trying to get Guts and Casca to hook up for a while now, he's personally invested in them having a relationship, and the two of them being in a relationship is contingent on them going off together without Griffith. We can deduce from a few clues that Judeu is invested in this because he doesn't feel good enough for Casca himself and he wants her to be happy, and he thinks Guts can make her happy.

So Judeau telling Guts to leave with Casca while he takes care of Griffith himself is basically Judeau making a sacrifice for Casca's sake, as well as thinking it's probably better for both Guts and Casca, based on what he knows about them. It's not better for Griffith, but his priority has never been Griffith, it's been Casca.

And Casca telling Guts to leave also fits their love triangle, and Casca's own jealousy and residual feelings for Griffith. Even if she could potentially put two and two together and realize that Guts genuinely wants to stay with Griffith, it makes sense to me that she wouldn't want to make that leap, because the three of them together spell jealousy, and if only two of them can be together without devolving into resentment, well, Griffith just demonstrated that he needs her the way she's always wanted him to need her, and Guts has his own dream to pursue, so this way she at least gets to have something she wants. And she can tell herself that Griffith will get over Guts, that Guts isn't good for Griffith anyway considering what happened, etc.

But yeah ultimately the reason they tell him to leave is because Guts made his bed and now he has to lie in it. So it is to drive the plot towards the Eclipse at the end of the day, but idk, it works for me. Both Casca and Judeau have their own priorities that aren't Griffith and Guts living happily ever after together, and those contribute to them telling Guts to leave, and setting off the Eclipse. I find it believable and interesting for the characters.

arguments with jeonghan rarely happened, but when they did there was a reason. I see him as someone who can be very stubborn during arguments, and will usually argue in order to make his point clearer to the other person, if he had started the argument he would apologize first but if it were you who had started the argument he's not gonna be the one to apologize first!

the tension between the two of you was thick and palpable. it hung in the air, almost stifling at times. you could feel your skin crawling with irritation at his constant staring, but you knew that if you said anything out loud you'd only make things worse.

"I didn't mean to upset you," he finally spoke up, breaking the silence. "I'm sorry," he spoke again

you gave a nod in response, not bothering to look at him. he sighed before giving you one last glance before standing from where he was sat down on the sofa. he made his way into the kitchen, presumably to make some tea for the both of you. you took this moment to sit there, trying not to think about why you were even in this situation to begin with.

after a few minutes or so of sitting in the living room you got up and went into the kitchen as well. wrapping your arms around his waist. you rested your chin on top of his shoulder and he stiffened immediately after. "i love you" you reassured him.

he turned around and cupped your face in his hands. he brought your forehead together and leaned forward pressing your lips against his. it was sweet and gentle. "i love you too"

again; arguments with joshua are rare. even rarer than jeonghan but i see joshua as a very calm and collected, he doesnt lose his temper or raise his voice and instead, he listens to your side and tries to see what your perspective is and how it could be improved. he's never been one to judge you for being upset!! he's someone who always tries to apologize first! arguments with him usually end in hugs joshua is a very great communicator

joshua was nodding along as you explained your side of the argument and why you had gotten so upset with him . he just nodded, his face unreadable and didn't reply right away when you finished speaking.

"are you still listening to me?" you asked looking at him a little worried that maybe you'd said something wrong, "it's stupid I know" you spoke quickly. "no, it's not" he shook his head quickly then cleared his throat, "you made some valid points" he stated calmly.

ah wonu,, in my opinion this man views arguments as pointless. so when they do happen they come off as a nuisance to him. he gets annoyed by them and just ends up being more irritable, so sometimes he can come off as cold during arguments. which isn't the case, though with that being said most of the times he's quiet and will let you argue with the wall. it's not that he doesn't care about your feelings because he does. he just doesn't think arguing with him is a good way to let your feelings be known. he almost never apologizes first; he waits until you've calmed down and apologized to him before he manages to apologize to you and make it up to you! arguments with him end in kisses 9 times out of 10

wonwoo turned around, a scowl already forming on his face. your voice carried throughout the room and he was trying very hard to ignore you . he wasn't particularly fond of the sound of your voice. it made him feel as though his ears were going to explode any second now. he was irritated and you could tell by the look in his eyes. you gave up on him when he started walking away from you.

you stood there for a moment before throwing your hands into the air and making your way over to your bedroom door you cleared your throat, he didn't bother looking back at you as he started typing something into his phone.

your fingers tapped against the wood nervously. you wanted so badly to talk to him but you knew that he needed space right now. you decided to leave him alone. you slowly shut your door behind you before going to sit on your bed the sound of music filled your esrs. he was probably playing a game again.

it had been around an hour later when you finally got up and went into the living room to where he was sat. he seemed to be engrossed in whatever he was doing and you walked around to him to sit in his lap

he jumped a little when you took his hand, looking up at you he smiled slightly before turning his attention back to his game. "m sorry wonwoo..." you sighed , wrapping your arms around his neck. he hummed and put his controller on the table before putting his free arm around you. "are you okay?" you asked softly, leaning down to kiss his cheek before pulling away.

he nodded, smiling a little. "i am...just really stressed out lately." you nodded "is there anyway I can help?" he grinned "i think some kisses would help"

you giggled and kissed him lightly. you moved so your back was resting on the sofa and sat with your legs wrapped around his waist, he smiled and kissed you once more, this time moving his hands to rest on your waist after awhile he pulled away and rested his forehead against yours "i love you"

SPOILERS THE ENTIRETY OF IN STARS AND TIME FOR THIS RAMBLE. im covering acts 1-6 so theres your warning now but the ramble is under the cut. fair warning, may not make much sense either

ok trust me on this. this song right here makes me think of siffrin because of the isat brainrot but IT WORKS. AND IT FITS SO WELL AND LET ME TELL YOU WHY

(this is also my interpretation of it and how i understand the song and link it to the thoughts and ideas in my head. im also picking out certain lyrics because its easier to explain, so i would recommend listening to the song for the full thing)

"And I placed my palm upon your collarbone, and I wished to fall asleep deep in your marrow."

siffrin craves closeness with the rest of the party and in the memory of bad touch and the garden room, for example, its clear that they have no clue how to ask for it, and their way of getting that closeness can be odd or just plain weird. like how the song says that "they wish to fall asleep in their marrow", its a very odd way of achieving closeness with somebody, almost like trying to melt into them. (this may be far fetched but it makes sense to me stick with me here)

"There's a hunger under my skin and its gripping at my bones. There's a hunger like a lions and its ripping right through my bones."

its that feeling of hunger that is mentioned over and over again starting at the beginning of act 2 leading all the way into the end of act 5 that siffrin feels and just cant get rid of

"I'm as calm as a baby lamb that is being led. I'm as blue as blood before the blood goes red."

since finding out about the loops, siffrin just accepts the fact that they wont stay dead when theyre killed, and they use it as a way to delete their mistakes. hes incredibly calm about touching tears, about slipping on the banana peel, about using the dagger, all of it. siffrin gets so used to the depression hes falled into and just feels bad all the time. the glass shard that siffrin repeatedly keeps cutting their finger on, and later in act 5, the same glass shard they use to carve stars into their skin. and it ties with the red that continues to pop up throughout the game.

"And how it hurts even in the sun. Its a goddamn joke how we can hurt even in the sun."

everything is fine from everyone elses perspective and theyre completely oblivious to the fact that siffrin is looping through time, spending actual weeks in a hellscape of their own making. hes dying repeatedly and nobody else is aware that this is happening and theyre all blissfully ignorant

"For a heart beats the best in a bed beside the one that it loves."

isabeau refuses to confess his love for siffrin, and siffrin refuses to admit that they crave touch, and yet, both sides love the other unconditionally. (not to mention they literally sleep next to each other every night.)

"Yes, a heart beats the best when in a head, death becomes irrelevant."

after a while, siffrin has become so used to death and dying that it doesnt even matter to him anymore. killing themself is just another necessary evil they have to face in order to get to the end, have the "perfect" loop, and find answers. since they found out they could loop, it has stuck itself in siffrin's mind that "oh i can just erase all my mistakes and start over again" without so much as blinking at the fact that it means dying repeatedly.

"Cause if you're dreaming about dying, then you're not really living, darling."

siffrins entire existence starts to revolve around the dying, the loops, and escaping them. he cant even be happy with the rest of his party because of how terrified he is of messing up. theyre practically conditioning themself to loop at any mistake they make, and they harshly berate themself for it too.

after doing the friendquests a couple times as well, siffrin has those thoughts of "your friends would hate you if they knew why you were doing this" and "if you mess it up, you can just loop back and try again". siffrin stops even paying attention to the present and is so anxious about getting the "perfect loop" that he isnt even concerned about the present but rather the outcome. i think that is ultimately what went wrong with the attempted friendquests in act 5 as well.

"You've gotta be starving, you've gotta be starving for it."

again with that hunger that cant be satisfied with anything. as the game progresses, siffrins thoughts surrounding the snacks and the food always come back to how hungry he is and how its just never enough. it keeps coming back and siffrin is literally starving during the game and it gets especially bad in acts 3-5

"And if you're crying by the moon, in the sun you better lift up that chin."

siffrin was so depressed for the entire game, but then after act 5, its like the sun rises again and they can finally escape the loops and understand that the rest of the party loves them. he doesnt have to bottle it all up until it becomes too much and he can actually begin to enjoy life again after the loops end.

"You've gotta be starving, you've gotta be starving for it."

everything is over, and siffrin can finally rid themself of those feelings of hunger. the feeling is replaced with a want for love and siffrin is finally opening up and letting themself be taken care of by their friends family after all that they went through. the raw emotion in the singers voice when she sings these lyrics also feels very fitting for this

if i could animate, i would definitely make an animatic of this song and the characters to show what i mean because it makes more sense in my mind. i have so many ideas in my head in regards to this song specifically and its infesting my brain

im debating whether or not i should actually post this because its a bit confusing and strange but fuck it we ball

-Hermit purple is such a good pick with tallulah. Im imagining phil sighing as he pulls out another camera for her to destroy before they eventually start having super cheap ones on hand for that exact purpose

-Listen i see purple haze for leo, i get it i can see the vision. But my fugo loving brain refuses to let go of what purple haze means for him as a stand symbolically and wants to give it to q!cellbit EVEN THOUGH WERE ONLY TALKING ABOUT THE EGGS.

Anyways in context of only assigning stands to the eggs 100% i think she should get out purple haze, but if were talking about everyone i also think born this way would be a really good fit for her and i cant quite explain why outside of the vibes just mathcing in my head

Anyways during it the author had the reason ungalo’s life became so shit was because he accidentally used his stand to make the story of holes come true with him acting as the main character and now every tine i think about that stand i cant not think of that.

But anyways him and roier would abuse the fuck out of his stand and it would in fact be hilarious

-As a giorno lover, dapper is so giorno coded. He would be so fucking unstoppable with that stand even without it being its requiem version. I can so see him using it to fuck with his dad for funnsies too.

-Pomme would be so sweet to the pistols too, she would make sure they get the best treats. I think at first she would struggle with keeping them in line but with etoiles help she would be the perfect balance of stern and sweet.

-richas with heavens door would be the absolute worst. Like the biggest menace ever. He would use it on his parents to make it so they could never give him a bath again and then they would have to find a work around for what doesnt count as bath but still technically got him clean until their able to convince him to reverse it.

Jay B

Love: I really can’t tell when it comes to his situation, as he doesnt feel like he is in a relationship but at the same time he isn't single either. from what i can gather, i think JayB is having some type of affair but it's something that he is keeping under the low radar, something he doesn't want anyone to know about

Career: So he is in military, however i do see that JayB has already worked on a few projects before he left for his service, probably to get things ready for when he would come back

Self: He isn't in his most perfect form physically speaking. i believe that he is doing well mentally and emotionally and as a person, but physically his energy is restrain and he probably wakes up with sore muscles on the mornings

Mark

Love: He is seeing someone but things aren't going well between them. there’s some money issues involved in the relationship and Mark has also been focusing more on his career than on his love life which often brings problems

Career: things have also stopped for him. Mark has been working on a few things but he has no green light in releasing what he wants. Mark has also been fighting some issues when it comes to relationships while working, as many people don't appreciate him as much as one could think which puts a lot of stops on his goals.

Self: Overall he is okay despite having some turbulence on his emotions. Mark is someone who can get easily affected by things around him and as far as i can see, he has been clinging onto things that aren't good for him. he needs to be careful in order not to dive into something darker

Jackson

Love: Without any doubts, this man is dating someone and the relationship seems to be going well. It's someone he had a crush on for a long time and they are finally going through their life together. also it feels like they have been together probably for 9 months? although i cannot be sure

Career: however career wise things aren't going well and they aren't going as planned. Jackson probably got into arguments with either his company or a high up which is costing me a lot of money in projects that he had already invested in. also i feel like his sponsor is reclent when it comes to his promotions

Self: he is divided. on one hand his relationship brings him comfort and happiness but on another hand, his career means alot to him and benign unable to do what he likes and wants kind of puts a restrain on him, chains that could pull him under the bus

Jinyoung

Love: He also is in a relationship but things aren't going as planned. i feel like Jinyoung had plans for his partner and him (probably a moving together, a marriage or anything he would put the relationship higher) however his partner has not accepted it. they are still together and working out things by his partner doesn't seem to share the same goals than he does

Career: his sponsor is his worst enemy at this point because everything that he has been working on for, all the things she has invested his energy on has been monitored by his sponsor and not his company which often provides little insight. basically i believe that his sponsor doesn't want to promote or invest in things he does because they believe it wont bring any earning to them

Self: however despite all of that Jinyoung is someone positive, and he is someone that likes to keep their head high no matter how hard things are. Thus, he has been trying to see things from another perspective.

Youngjae

Love: Yougnjae is equally in a relationship with someone but i believe that he likes insight on this person. I feel like he is with them because he loves them, because they find them attractive but he doesn't know anything about them in an intimate and close way. Youngjae is probably only invested through his own feelings without taking in consideration his partner

Career: when i say i feel the dark energy of wealth here, isn't something to brag about. everything that he does has to do with money and Youngjae isn't doing any project that won't bring him earnings. it doesn't feel like he is here for the liking of music but mor its earnings and its fame

Self: he lacks long term success perceptive which will probably come to bite his butt. the end of the group in a way has affected him and pushed him in roads that he should have not taken

BamBam

Love: he is probably single at the moment we speak, mostly because bambam has crushed all over but he is unable to commit to one person in particular. also i see that his ex has been very present on his life but on a negative way (they probably stalk them or blackmail him in a certain way) which also impacts the way he relations himself with others

Career: there’s good things coming for him and his career, and he has been working on a few things. bambam will try to use his image to promote his music and his projects but hr needs to be careful this year because everything that he will publically say will be used against him

Self: mentally i don't think he is doing well, he feels vulnerable and low in energy. bambam probably struggles a lot with mental health and he hasn't been searching for any professional helps which is a mistake

Yugyeom

Love: he is single at the moment, he went through a very hardore breakup not long ago and that impacted him a lot as a man and as who he believes he is (like ego wise). Yugyeom will need some time to heal form this

Career: he juggles too much, he doesn't know what he wants in life or what he needs for his career. Yugyeom is the type to work out for the status instead of the music but at the same time he doesn't have any particular goal as long as it brings hm money which can often cause some complications when it comes to going projects

Self: despite everything that has been happening t hi, he seems to be holding on pretty well and as always he is focused on his well benign and on how he enjoys his life. he doesn't want to stay behind and cry for things that no longer serves him

this is fumiya . the charisma of good and evil . hes the one who brought everyone in the house together for Reasons i guess . he looks very normal at first glance (especially compared to the design of everyone else) but hes the one everyone in the house is scared of. reason being he has zero sense of morals. he doesnt properly distinguish between right and wrong nor good and bad . he may sound terrifying but hes also really fucking chill . all of this combined makes him someone you can never completely trust nor distrust and its kinda funny . he also loves sweets and candy and pastries he like eats them excessively . every social situation hes in he always looks disinterested and in his own head . hes so neurodivergent They all are ngl

this is rikai . the charisma of order . unlike fumiya he has A Very Clear Sense Of Righteousness and fights for order among the members of the house everyday of his life . unsurprisingly this gets annoying as fuck when you actually dig into his usual methods . everyone in the house can agree that everything he does for righteousness is like very fucking exaggerated (like his obnoxious ass whistle he keeps using everytime order is slightly disturbed) but he couldnt care less . he wants order and control over everything and everyone . omg i forgot how hot his main official art was mffffgfhhhh SORRY SORRY SORRY S . getting derailed here . he may look and Act like hes the only normal person in there but in many senses hes one of the worst ones .

this is terra . the charisma of self-love . he . really likes himself . he Loves himself . he stares into the mirror for literal hours without problem . he Bleeds From His Nose Very Often looking at himself . he also has very low empathy for others that arent himself actually He couldn't care less about other people aside from himself . he's the one and only person worth it in the entire world in his perspective and honestly thats kinda real of him . also has a very complex relationship with gender and all that stuff . hes the only one from the whole cast with two main outfits . automatically proves his point that hes better tbh

This Is Ohse . the charisma of self-punishment . you know how terra is all about loving himself and all that well Hes the exact opposite. the very extreme opposite. he has severe depression and attempts to end his life several times throughout the series . he cant bear other people being nice to him because he feels like he doesn't deserve it at all. he barely leaves the room because he doesnt want people looking at his face he legitimately thinks it would be too disgusting for everyone . when he does leave he covers his face with a plastic bag so people dont look at his face . he often goes on tangents about how much he sucks. aside from all of that he really likes art and is actually very skilled at it he just doesn't notice this because hes too busy thinking nothing he does is worth it at all . he ruined my life

this is kei . the charisma of rebel. one day he went Damn i should start being a bitch and he never once stopped . if there's anything he can oppose at all he Does he never wants to agree with anyone or anything at all . rikai fucking hates him sometimes . everyone fucking hates him sometimes . he also likes street fights despite being fucking incompetent at them and always losing . he loves violence . its like his one solution for everything . unfortunately for him hes also one pathetic ass guy veeeeery deep inside even if he wants to put on this tough guy front. hes really truly miserable he just doesnt want anyone to ever find out

You Know How This Is Kinda Insane Right . he loves doing chores and being ordered around . if anyone ever offers to help him he like goes insane . he also . uhm . he also wears this . dog collar . so people ...... pull at it ........ and stuff ....... also hes like .............. very much a masochist ....... hes also ...... sometimes when they get Too Charisma ! they transform have a whole musical number and then collapse in exhaustion . this is called a charisma break . they get it from being actual weirdos .

uhm my only warning for if you ever decide to watch charisma house is Number One amahiko as a whole and Number Two rikai's first song has literal nazi imagery unfortunately . Fortunately though thats like the only weird in the bad way mv . because the other mvs are also weird . i just don't know if i should describe them as weird in a good way . whatever. specific drama track episode for the song is number 27 but its only by the end . the rest of the episode is good to watch❤️

8.) common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about

sig being extraordinarily angry with pebbles. like to the point of just outright bullying him! its completely in-character in some cases (like TLAI or RW CHAOS AU by weepinglilvessel), but i feel like people take sigs anger waaay too far with him reminding pebbles at every opportunity or never acknowledging what pebbles was doing to himself.

sig isnt obligated to forgive pebbles for killing his friend, like EVER; no one is. but him being angry forever and never letting pebbles live it down by joking about it is just. not him?

sig and pebbles are neighbors from the same local group, and were likely friendly at some point. sig lost two friends in the midst of a horrible, tragic accident and i feel like that doesnt get acknowedged as much. its REALLY fucked when combined with their "but i stay silly :3 (tormented)" attitude after the fact.

16.) you can't understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)

pebbles just being mean for no reason, or meaner than he really is! went over this recently but i need to drill it into peoples heads.

i get it, its not fair that he kills you when you simply dont leave him alone, so its easier to see him as more of an Asshole than he really is, but thats uhm. thats the point? this is rain world, you are an unimportant slugcat, so if you die for reasons you cant understand or reasons that are unfair from your perspective, thats The Point.

now, pebbles is only irritable and prickly as he is because, i dont know, he has like literally every problem? Hes dying like every iterator is, but Faster and more agonizingly because of his own actions, which killed his sister as well; he feels incredibly guilty about that and deeply regrets hurting his closest friends; hes, well, depressed in general (important point when it comes to irritability) and still has that same fucking problem that his creators left his kind to solve, or die trying. and now these rats make it a point to keep distracting him with visits for whatever fucking reason. i think youd be a bit pissed off if that was you!

that irritability is an iconic part of him, but once all the reasons for this are removed hes just a pompous asshole for no reason (this is why hes still sick and depressed in ruff&ruff lore, because i dont want him to be irritable for No Reason or else id feel itd be ooc), so i can see why most players come away from this thinking hes just mean before they start looking at loredumps from moon. I certainly did back when i was 13!

HI just wanted to comment on something i see frequently in your writing! A recurring motif ive noticed you like to use is like... xue yang waiting for something to hurt- expecting pain (usually physical) and either enduring it when it happens or being surprised when it doesnt. And i think that is just so chef kiss- i think xue yang as a character is on some level always waiting for the other shoe to drop, waiting for things to start hurting, ready to cut and run or lash out when they do, and i think that recurring motif of yours is just Extremely him and its always stuck with me when i reread your work. 10/10 thank u for giving me xue yang brain worms

you're welcome for the xue yang brain worms, just sharing my own when I don't have any more room for them in my own head. it's how I cope

anyway though I love when people like...specifically mention recurring Motifs they notice me playing with with a character, because I both worry that it's too obvious and also unclear at all times. but yeah!! this is definitely one of those where...I've talked before about how I think Xue Yang is very used to existing in a constantly precarious state.

Nothing is certain, nothing is stable, and his expectations of the people around him are in the basement. He pretty much lives by the expectation that he can't trust anybody else to look out for him except for him, and when they do it's always contingent and going to end eventually. I don't think Xue Yang was surprised to get kicked out of Jinlintai, however it happened; there was always an expiration date on that arrangement, from his perspective, and it was just going to be a matter of how and when it happened, and how well he could land when it did. He is very much always waiting for the other shoe to drop, because it's just a matter of time and he has to be ready when it happens.

(He wasn't ready when he was a kid, he didn't see it coming, but he's never making that mistake again. He will, in fact, bite first if it looks like there's something anywhere nearby that might possibly hurt him. Caught off guard once, death on the entire Chang Clan, caught off guard twice, that's just embarrassing.)

I also think a lot about how Xue Yang simultaneously spends all the time in anticipation of his own imminent death and carries himself with a certain attitude of invincibility and total indifference toward consequences. Bad shit's going to happen and eventually it will kill him but in the meantime he's going to live life like it won't.

Basically: pain and suffering is not just a fact of life but the rule; anything else is the exception.

And this is what kills me about two specific moments in the Yi City arc. The first is the one where Song Lan first calls Xue Yang's name, and the second is during the argument with Xiao Xingchen where Xue Yang tips from trying to get Xiao Xingchen to understand to on the attack. They're moments where I think it shows how much Xue Yang did relax during that period of time, and how much he at least...stopped being quite so ready for the flip side, and that's part of why it hits so hard when it does arrive, and part of why he goes after Xiao Xingchen as viciously as he does.

(Like I said, caught off guard twice...stupid, stupid mistake, and look what happened. Nobody's supposed to be able to hurt Xue Yang anymore but somehow Xiao Xingchen is doing it, and he should have known this was coming, when did he forget to watch for it?)

There's something too, though maybe this is also me reading forward in the MXTX extended universe, that looks at the way Xue Yang treats Xiao Xingchen in particular and wonders if he is, at least in some way, testing his hypothesis. I definitely think the way he goes after Xiao Xingchen isn't just about personal revenge; the way it's tailored is very specifically making a point about how Xue Yang's worldview is right and Xiao Xingchen's is wrong. Xiao Xingchen thinks he can alleviate suffering and make the world better; Xue Yang is here saying that there's no such thing.

Regarding the five star four star and 2 three stars for each unit thing they tend to do my biggest wish is for himeru/kohaku and tatsumi/mayoi centre. Idk how to explain it but hiiro and rinne were the focus of the main story and aira and niki felt like they got a bit of character from that too (more than their other 2 members at least) so this just kinda feels. Right? I've seen people theorise that they'll address kaname or that he'll wake up and I don't doubt that logic, I just hope if so kohaku and mayoi can be of some significance. I think kohaku and mayoi are decent to bring attention to because despite himeru trying to be distant at first I think he definitely is most fond of kohaku, and don't ask me about tatsumi and mayoi you're talking to a ttmy shipper I'll be here all day. Basically I just think if himeru and tatsumi were to go through the horrors their unit mates would be there for them but those two in particular somewhat understand them a bit better. Before anyone tells me these 4 were in the romantic date scout I know. I've simply decided to remove it from my memory because I could never hate a story more than that one.

Im hoping for niki to have a really big moment in the tour personally, as well as aira, in a different light than what we've seen so far. I just...wish i cared more for them than i really do. And I wish i could make myself care, but alas, i can live with it just fine actually. The card distribution, well, im trying to keep track of when they've had cards last already/who's still due. Tatsumi still needs a ts2 so im counting him out of the possible tour 5stars (could be a 4star), but everyone else i think is eligible from that perspective. Oh......ohhhh.....it just came to mind, but you know how they did the altered and graduation tours? Tatsumi's ts2 could totally be running during the alkakurei tour, and be related to the story in that manner. Im willing to bet on this actually, nevermind, he's definitely getting a tour 5star in the gacha. And kohaku getting his fs2 then as well would be so cruel...higgles. rip alkakureiPs. Himemayo tour 5stars sounds plausible. But so does amagi bros to parallel their main story 5stars, or any other combination... idkidk im going to stop speculating until we have more information. Um. Checkmate anime is coming out first and i will be focusing my attention and obsession there, sorry. My knightspilled checkmateholic eichip swag.

Im not sure if you meant you actually hate romantic date /srs or if it was said in a "omg i hate x thing its gonna be the only thing i think about for days" way. I feel like you meant it /srs but im personally a fan of the story poking fun at fandom behavior, giving into and critiquing at the same time, as well as the insights into himeru's psyche. The game with affinity points from the other characters is just in himeru's head and a manifestation of his subconscious, where he thinks no one's love for him can grow as he doesnt let them actually know Him, the person beyond the himeru persona. Only tatsumi who loves everyone could still love him. And thats also pissing him off.

They both approach and view things, relationships, motivation etc so differently, a lot of himeru's internal monologues are filled with "negative" feelings (jealousy, pride, paranoia etc. Even the earliest we know of him is that he ran away from home because his dad remarried and he couldnt accept it, he's been like this forever. And yet, these feelings arent fitting with the perfect ido persona, so he bottles them up, with the occasional slip ups. Himeru's presence and slow opening up in crazy:b of all units, the group driven by their feelings and desires, is so so important to me.) whereas tatsumi just...has so much love and acceptance (although as much as they're an important part of his character, it's just as important that he also has his own wishes and desires and he does act on them, moreso than himeru at least. Like his hobby of driving recklessly, which he doesnt do because he cant drive well, but because he wants to do it like that and to experience the fun even if it's unconventional or incomprehensible to others). And this gap in their mentalities and approaches to life is scary for himeru. It's a hundred times harder to love and save another than to hate or break someone down (paraphrasing from another enstars quote lmao), i can empathize with himeru having complicated feelings about tatsumi's character that he doesnt understand himself, so he defaults to calling him unpleasant rather than having to unpack it. Let aside that beyond the difference in approaches they also have a complicated past, it's easier to just blame tatsumi who can take it seemingly unscathed. I think romantic date is fun to read both before and after having experienced obbligato...especially moreso after, when youre aware of the foreshadowing and further developments (this has been my experience with most of akira's gacha stories he's written in es2 era)

Im not a tthm shipper in the traditional sense of "i want to see them date" cuz i think what they have going on is much more fascinating and nuanced than that and it'd do the relationship a disservice imo. I was gonna say it's also fun to put these characters who struggle with understanding each other and actual romance and love in general actually in every sense of the word together but thats kind of the entire cast. A lot of my favorite dynamics at least, that have had varying degrees of success and development. However, it is something i enjoy, obviously, so i will always remain fond of romantic date...wah i rambled about this for a very long time, i'll stop now!

TSATS thoughts

spoilers obviously, you have been warned

yeah wow i am glad i didnt spend money on this book

im not sure if it was the WORST rrverse novel but uhhh,, its definitely up there

ive read fanfictions that better captured the vibe of the rrverse and solangelo specifically than this book did

so many different things about tsats bothered me so im gonna list them off to make myself feel better

will felt ooc, not in the way annoying ppl who only like fanon solangelo say he was but in the i actually read TOA and enjoyed it way

i get that going through the underworld and tartarus was going to be rough on will but he was just SOOO whiney and judgey it was really annoying to read at parts

also the whole storyline of will being a hater about the underworld was so uneccesary like youre telling me will solace, bisexual 2000s/2010s texan boy, healer to a couple dozen diverse kids at chb, literal battlefield medic, would find death and darkness inherently bad and untolerable?? rather than something to reconcile and make piece with??? even though hes literally dating the son of hades????????

like, something very interesting COULDVE been done with will’s character and his feelings towards nico’s past/trauma

picture this:

will, who bases his self esteem on how ‘useful’ he can be to people feels that he has to care for and ‘fix’ nico for nico to love him, he feels inferior because he cant fight as well on his own but he CAN heal people but nico isn’t letting him do that so he feels rejected and insecure

whilst nico doesnt want to let his trauma consume or define him, he also feels like its an inescabaly horrible part of himself that he cant get rid of, and will’s urge to ‘fix’ him makes him feel both unaccepted and that he cant share the worst parts of himself with will

they argue because from nico’s perspective it feels like will is trying to be his therapist and not his boyfriend, and from will’s perspective it feels like nico is pushing him away and if will isnt able to be ‘useful’ to him he fears he wont be loved any more

reconciliation comes in the form of will learning that his self worth isnt determined by how much he can do for other people and that nico loves him for him, and nico learning that part of accepting his darkness is letting people see the worst parts of him and trusting them to still love him not in spite of, but because of who he is

boom, i just came up with a way better, more in character, relationship conflict storyline off the top of my head if i do say so myself

okay back to the other shit that bothered me

why did will not have a weapon?? like??? we literally have that scene of him and chiron stress packing for tartarus and neither of them thinks that will should be armed in some way???

yes obviously will is primarily a medic not a fighter but still, its just such a dumb choice narratively

related to will’s abilities or lack thereof, what was with all the singing will did? he literally said himself in BOO that his sonic whistle was one of his only ‘musical’ abilities and that his talent lied with healing, we’ve seen him heal people w/out siging numerous times, why was this a thing??

also, the fucking care bear stare light blast thing, WHAT

will giving nyx hay fever also bothered me but i’ll admit that has more to do with me just not vibing with plague!will as a concept rather than it being a bad writing choice

speaking of nyx she was so boring

boring villain, boring motives, boring fight, all just boring af to me

the pacing of the book was so weird too

like the jumping back and fort between the trip to/through tartarus and the flashbacks with gorgyra was grating but dealable

but the fact that it took like HALF THE FUCKING BOOK to even get to tartarus was excruciating

there was NO need for all the underworld shit to take that long im sorry

nico also felt ooc, like over the course of TOA he obviously gets a bit softier and dorkier and i really genuinely like that but in TSATS i swear he was laughing or crying every 3 paragraphs and traumadumping to anyone who was (or wasnt) willing to listen like it just didnt feel like nico

all the solangelo pet names, gags

like significant annoyance and glow in the dark boyfriend and will’s various ‘death boy’-esque nicknames worked because they were (affectionate) digs at each other and not used every other sentence, ‘my little ball of darkness’ had the same energy as pookiebear

hazel only getting mentioned like twice was a fucking violation and im genuinely mad that reyna was only kind of mentioned once

like,, i already think thanks to fanon the friendship between jason and nico was/is given way more relevance than it actually has, but reyna was the one who felt all of nico’s pain, who shared her own trauma with him, who watched him kill bryce lawrence, who joined the hunters just like bianca, youre trying to tell me she wouldnt be on nico’s mind literally just as much as jason???

nico and piper have literally never been friends any idk why this book tried to make it seem like they are

im not against a nico/piper friendship or anything but like,,, nico ‘will not share my pain with others unless its literally forced out of me’ di angelo calling up a girl hes barely friendly accquiantances with and crying in front of her as he tells her all about his latest traumas, as her gf who is quite literally a stranger is also there? wack

speaking of bad writing and ooc-ness from nico the story of how he asked out will was terrible

‘i wanted a private date but the dyrads misunderstood and set up a big extravagant public gesture’ feels like something id find in a wattpad fic circa 2015

also theres no way nico went from his levels of internalised homophobia and shame and self loathing in HOH/BOO to publically coming out in front of the entirety of chb and asking will out in literally less than 6 months tf

the real-but-not-real dream with bianca and maria felt so uneccesary and disingenuous to nico’s character like he’d already accepted bianca’s death and that his old life was behind him and to have hades somehow ‘break the rules’ to bring them back to talk to nico was just so fucking jarring

also HADES being the one to send nico the prophecy, putting the responsibility of rescuing bob on his shoulders and retraumatising him and putting him in a position where he could very much die??? the fuck happened to ‘i want you to be happy’???

yet another instance of bizzare ooc-ness in this book ig

bob reffering to nico and will as his sun and star is just,, never rlly explained lmao

also bob is just, kinda, there, despite being the driving force behind the quest in the first place

i thought we’d get some actual will backstory, get to know more about his relationship with lee and micheal and his time at chb or his experiences growing up queer but no

all we got was that will used to travel around the country with his mom and they were attacked by evil pidgeons in nyc once which is how will’s satyr found him in the first place, cool i guess

i didnt mind the story of will and nico’s first kiss as much as their getting together but it still felt really fanfiction-y and cliche ngl

percabeth were WAYYY too fucking chill about solangelo going to tartarus and shouldve tried much harder to disaude them from going

also ik obviously the book isnt about them but it wouldve been nice for their survior’s guill re: bob to be expanded on a bit more, or even just,, better than rick and mark did it

i fucking hate the cacodemons i hate them SO much its SUCH a dumb narrative choice like literally who tf convinced them this would be a good idea and how can i fight them

i refuse to call them cocoa puffs, the REAL nico di angelo would never, do you hear me

also for a hot second there i thought the implication was that nyx had sexually assualted nico and i was like WOAH thats a bit much for a book for 11yros

honestly it still kind of reads that way since taking nico’s trauma, a part of him, and making something else living out of it without his consent is certainly a violation

not necessarily saying an SA-esque storyline has no place in the rrverse or middle school fiction, i think those topics can be tackled in a way thats appropriate for kids, but it felt out of place in TSATS to me

tartarus want nearly as scary or despair evoking this time around, it was just a dredge to get through and only a bit less boring than all the underworld stuff

i do appreciate that rick and mark were obviously having fun with all the body horror elements

i find it weird that will was, like, THAT broken up about him and nico ‘murdering’ octavian when in BOO he literally spoke about how he’d shoot him if he was better at archery lmao

i get hes a healer obviously there was gonna be some complex emotions there but idk it felt uneccesarily melodramatic

why was chb empty?? no like genuinely why

it contributed nothing to the story and doesnt even make sense since surely some of the year rounders have dead or abusive guardians

like??????? im genuinely confused by this writing descision what purpose did it serve to have chb empty????

i genuinely laughed at the geryon reveal because it was so out of left field, gay rights i guess

the fact that will didnt tell nico abt his talk with persephone felt weird and the talk itself was weirder

yeah overall id give the book a generous 4/10, it if was a fanfic id probably rate it higher but this was a real published book written by rick so im pretty disapointed

heres to hoping chalice of the gods is better

(i lied, im still enjoying the group dynamics. in fights, people are hurtful but truthful, so fights give a huge insight into the characters which is wonderful for analysis and picking the character apart)

this is the second episode in a row that three has lost his temper on the others a little bit and left the room at the end and zo has said ‘ill check on him’ and followed after him

anyway i love zo for it

bro their relationship is so freaking healthy

zo asks for permission to enter the room

he ignores the response, but only to keep him company. and i suspect that he knows him really well and knows that three should have someone with him, just to be there with him and help him relax

and he tries to bring three’s attention from the thoughts swirling around his mind and onto his physical presence, and three gets a little angry

but he communicates with zo, he tells him that he will answer questions, just not at that moment. he’s telling him that he’s willing to talk and communicate, but he needs time to understand so that he can explain his thoughts and feelings coherently. and he doesnt push zo away, either physically or verbally, so he tells him without words that he appreciates his presence, and he’s glad to have him there. he just cant really verbally communicate what’s going on right now, and that’s okay!

and then zo speaks to him. he gives him words of comfort, affirmation, support. he also provides the perspective of the others, a snippet of an insight into life outside of his own mind. “we all really did our best.”

“just because we lost once doesnt mean we will lose forever” ITS SO COMFORTING AND PERFECT how does he always seem to know the right thing to say
