genuine fandom question I am very curious abt people's opinions?
if u go on just abt any fandom space on the internet -- typically with more left leaning groups and teens -- u notice there's usually a bias towards the male characters over their female counterparts
to expose myself, here's some examples that come to mind for me
hazbin (angel dust, vox, and alastor are more well regarded than Charlie or vaggie)
danganronpa (notice most talked abt characters are usually male)
alien stage (even with a 3 girl-3 boy case, most discussion is abt male characters)
spiderverse (way more talk abt Miles, hobie and Miguel over gwen)
bsd (I didn't even know Female characters existed)
I'd like to pretend I'm better but I'm not this is also a self call out lol 😅😅
and more often than not, these male characters are shipped with other male characters, usually by female fans (ofc, major generalization here as well, and no hate to young fans having fun)
but when I look at some of these series, I feel the franchise themselves also just lean on the male characters for the dramatic, exciting, or emotional scenes way more than female characters. like yeah do love Charlie and vaggie, but their individual writing and romance were so blandly executed compared to the exploration of angel or the mystery of alastor. so most of my love comes from headcanon, not the show itself.
so yeah, is this bias from the audience's own internalized misogyny, or the fault of writing made by people who carry that similar bias as well?

anyway tell me why in their first encounter with one another, all gintoki and hijikata notice about each other are their eyes
like cannot be more obviously the love at first sight trope (they're literally insulting each other)
we def just missed the slow mo cut of their eyes meeting each other (theyre trying to take the other one out)

not sure but a neat subversion I noticed is how Gintoki doesn't always rely on his wooden sword when it comes to climactic fights
like most characters have strong associations to their weapons:
kagura connected to the yato through her use of her umbrella
tsukuyo and her introductions usually involving her using her kunai
the Shinsengumi having two arcs (Shinsengumi crisis and Excalibur lol) regarding their swords
just off my top of my head. kinda like how most Shonen function where characters have strong attatchements to their weapon of choice
but gintoki's wooden sword not only is based on a fabricated story and easily replaceable -- subversion of how iconic weapons are used in most action stories -- it is not always used to deal the killing blow
take for example the benzikura arc where gintoki easily accepts tetsuko's weapon to deal the killing blow. I feel there are other examples that I can't think of off my head but it shows gintoki's adaptability and the story's overall theme of change :P
it shows gintoki's strength through the actions he chooses to make, not the weapon in his hand
