okay thoughts on Umineko 1 through 4.
Um
Um
Um
What.
Genuinely I don't know.
That was something unlike anything else.
I think the best way that I can describe it is by saying it was the first time in a long while that I found myself physically stepping away and spending hours just processing what the heck was happening before continuing.
Reading some parts of it caused me physical pain, in a way that I genuinely can't quite describe, but was certainly an incredible achievement of storytelling.
I think this is the most a story has taken me for a ride in, well maybe ever. The whole time I was on a roller coaster and all the story beats and twists hit me fully without me seeing them coming at all. I mean wow.
I don't even know how I feel about the characters which is usually what my strongest impression is from. There are some characters that I think I should probably hate...but I just can't. I think that is probably amazing character writing. Like wow.
It also retroactively made me appreciate Higurashi's ending a lot more (with a disclaimer being that I've only watched the anime. Y'know this makes me want to go back and read the source- I haven't even finished Umineko yet don't let me get ahead of myself.)
Moral of the story is I don't know what the heck Umineko did to me, but it did something that I probably won't be able to understand for a good while. But whatever it was was wholly unique and probably incredible and I can't wait to read the rest of it.
Would I recommend it? No probably not.

Both Pride & Prejudice and Much Ado About Nothing work so well as enemies to lovers because despite surface animosity, it's clear that both end couples really respect each other and for good reasons. I think you could even argue that with Beatrice, she spars with Benedick because she considers him a worthy opponent.
When Hero and Ursuala plot to make Beatrice fall in love, Hero instructs her to speak of Benedick and "praise him more than ever man did merit" and yet when Beatrice finally speaks, she doesn't disagree with their high praise, she says of Benedick:
For others say thou dost deserve, and I Believe it better than reportingly.
Benedick likewise after his eavesdropping on Don Pedro, Leonato, and Claudio's praise Beatrice says:
They say the lady is fair; 'tis a truth, I can bear them witness; and virtuous; 'tis so, I cannot reprove it; and wise, but for loving me; by my troth, it is no addition to her wit, nor no great argument of her folly, for I will be horribly in love with her.
Similarly in Pride & Prejudice, once the misunderstanding about Wickham is cleared away, Elizabeth is able to acknowledge to herself how much she respects and likes Darcy:
She began now to comprehend that he was exactly the man who, in disposition and talents, would most suit her. His understanding and temper, though unlike her own, would have answered all her wishes. It was an union that must have been to the advantage of both: by her ease and liveliness, his mind might have been softened, his manners improved; and from his judgment, information, and knowledge of the world, she must have received benefit of greater importance.
Darcy also finds that he admires Elizabeth, after initially dismissing her:
But no sooner had he made it clear to himself and his friends that she had hardly a good feature in her face, than he began to find it was rendered uncommonly intelligent by the beautiful expression of her dark eyes. To this discovery succeeded some others equally mortifying. Though he had detected with a critical eye more than one failure of perfect symmetry in her form, he was forced to acknowledge her figure to be light and pleasing; and in spite of his asserting that her manners were not those of the fashionable world, he was caught by their easy playfulness.
All of these characters also hear and accept criticism of themselves. Both Benedick and Beatrice hear they are too proud to accept love, which they both overcome. Elizabeth learns that she judged Darcy without sufficient information and Darcy that his behaviour was not that of a gentleman. Their mutual acceptance of this criticism and their growth as people leads to their ultimate happiness.
Unfortunately, those who reproduce this trope often forget to build this foundation of respect and the acknowledgement, either personally or publically, that the characters have been wrong. Instead we get characters who mid argument begin ripping each other's clothes off. No growth, no understanding how they have been wrong, it just becomes "thin line between hatred and love" instead of "we grew towards each other".

what are these "best fics youve ever read that barely have any hits" you mentioned? can you give us a top 5 or sonething?
Oh God, you've really shamed me here because I read a LOT of random fics from fandoms I'm not even part of and the stories I was referring to largely come from there.
However, in the interest of practising what I preach, I sat down today and read a bunch of Warrior Nun fics I'd never read before so I could rec you some. To be totally clear, these aren't necessarily going to have "hardly any hits" but are fics that I think could use more love in general.
In no particular order:
I was seeing black and white (and now I'm living in color) by gayestcatra - 1281 words, a beautifully soft fic set in Switzerland with gorgeous description. By the same author I also enjoyed (your life was) my life's best part, an angsty Mary/Shannon exploring Mary's (heartbreaking) grief after Shannon's death.
Cat’s Cradle security checkpoint logs by @jtl07 - 518 words, have I raved enough on tumblr yet about how much I love their writing? No? Oh okay I'll do it again then. JT is one of my favourite writers in the fandom and I love this series of fics they did giving creative looks into the characters - this particular one is the contents of their bags but the whole series is worth checking out (and everything else they write too, obviously).
Lauds by @sisterdivinium - 3152 words, Mother Superion/Jillian Salvius. WE LOVE A RAREPAIR. Gorgeously written fic where you feel the weight of every single action. The author has a TON of fics if you liked this one too.
you're my best friend (in a world we must defend) by @daisychainsandbowties - 3980 words, avatrice and Pokemon. Beatrice's characterisation in this drives me insane. I MUST know more. If you know nothing about pokemon here's your primer: they're funny little guys you catch and make fight, exactly like the Catholic church did to Ava. There, now you've got no excuse not to read it.
Dead People Don't Shiver by waterintheshadows - 2068 words, avatrice soulmate AU set in a morgue FUCK YEAH. This is the kind of shit I live for. Great concept, great execution.
Where The River Bends by @itchyouchyz - 100,750 words, avatrice 1960s midwife AU. Full disclosure - it's 100k - I haven't finished it yet. But I LOVE what I've read so far, tender and lovely. Check the tags for trigger warnings on this one!
keep me in your mirror (but don't take your eyes off the road) by minutetuna - 26,343 words, avatrice season 2 road trip au. It made me feel this precise emotion: hnnnnnnghhhhh. There is a particular style of writing which is just bouncy and pacy and still draws you into every single emotion and this author has it in spades. LOVE.
This was so much fun! If anyone else wants to hit me up with some recs I'd love to hear them - even if (especially if) they're your fics. It's a long weekend, might as well spend it reading fanfiction.

Give me the hot Elisabeth and Rebecca takes!
Sure thing! (Oh boy this turned out long.)
Elisabeth disclaimer: this is purely based on vibes. I have some knowledge of the historical background, but it’s not really my field of study.
Rebecca disclaimer: this is my field of study and I have very strong opinions on it, though I do not claim that I am always correct. I do however maintain that I could back up many of my claims if I had the time to do proper textual analysis and read secondary sources.
I genuinely think Elisabeth (the musical as it was written) is a masterpiece. The framing device, the way certain melodies mirror each other to foreshadow events or indicate character development — it’s amazing! Plus, the music is ridiculously good. 100/10. I love this musical.
Most stagings/recordings of Elisabeth since 2012 though? More than questionable. Levay/Kunze musicals in general appear to be following a pattern where the original production and a maybe one or two productions after it are full of nuance and complexity, only to have that complexity broken down and reduced over time. That is no fault of the musical itself, but a worrying trend of not trusting audience to be able to handle nuance and trying to make every element of a production more palatable and easier to handle. I hate it. Both the 1992 and the 2005 Wien productions have so much to recommend them (I can’t speak for the German productions but would humbly turn over the questions to more Elisabeth-versed mutuals like @fitzrove), but it all seems to be going downhill.
HOT TAKE: I think bringing on more and more “Broadway-sounding” performers to do both Elisabeth and Rebecca is a mistake. For me, Levay/Kunze shows have a very specific sound to them, a sound that fits into European musical theatre and makes sense for when and where they were created. Hiring almost exclusively people with a way more modern, belt-y sound is not a direction I personally like for these shows. Don’t get me wrong, this is not about any specific performers, it’s about trying to change the sound of these shows into something more akin to a big Broadway musical and that really doesn’t work for me. Both Elisabeth and Rebecca are so idiosyncratic in how they sound and how they’re written, trying to make them fit into a mould they don’t belong in does them a disservice. (Looking at you, VBW.)
Maybe not a hot take: but I love the 2005 Wien production of Elisabeth so much. It was my first exposure to the musical and remains my go-to cast album. It certainly has faults and I totally understand why people might gravitate towards different productions, but since I haven’t listened to the full 1992 Wien and 2001 Essen (?) productions yet, I can only compare it to 2012.
REBECCA HOT TAKE: Michael Kunze has stated that he views Rebecca as first and foremost a love story and I think he is WRONG. Daphne du Maurier herself would probably think he was wrong (seeing as she hated the story being described as a romance). This is a core problem with Rebecca das Musical. There are many things to love (Danny, Danny, Beatrice, and did I mention Danny?), but in my opinion, the whole “this is a great love story” angle does it a huge disservice. Let’s make it weirder! Let’s make it as bleak as it fucking is! (Probably not a crowd pleaser but let me have my fun).
Rebecca the musical could have done with some serious editing.
The Magdeburg production of Rebecca, which I am aware was not very accessible to a lot of people, might be one of the best productions of Rebecca ever. Kerstin Ibald absolutely knocked it out of the park with her Mrs Danvers and gave her all the nuance and emotion we so desperately crave. Her Danny is so broken, so lost. Patrick Stanke’s Maxim strikes the perfect balance between the haughty upperclass Englishman who takes kind of a fatherly tone with his young wive, and the haunted, jealous husband who absolutely did murder his first wife. Also in this production Maxim and Ich finally have some chemistry! This production’s Ich (Sibylle Lambrecht, I think) has such a great character arc and it is completely believable that she is into Maxim, even (or especially??) after his confession. Plus, the set design was amazing!!!
More Rebecca hot takes that I’ve definitely brought up before: I know we all like to write Ich as a repressed queer woman who ends up not being all that into Maxim, but honestly, she probably is very attracted to him. We can speculate about the why, but like, it is strongly implied that they have sex for the first time shortly after Maxim’s confession. She wants him.
I maintain and will die on this hill that making Danny sing “Ich liebte sie, doch sie hat mich verraten” is a mistake. I mean, yes please let Danny tell us she loved Rebecca, but come on. Danny doesn’t lose her faith in Rebecca. She doesn’t stop idolising Rebecca. Whatever her reasons for setting Manderley on fire may be it’s not that she thinks Rebecca betrayed her. I don’t even think Danny thinks highly enough of herself to even consider feeling betrayed by Rebecca. Rebecca is god to her.
I definitely have more, but this post is really long and I’m running out of steam… Hope you enjoyed!

another fall is upon us! another woevember is coming!!
what is it?
woevember is an asoue fanwork event week, that will take place from november 12th through november 18th, 2023. last year there was a different group of characters each day, and this year, each day of the week is dedicated to a different location for a series of unfortunate events or all the wrong questions.
what do i do?
the prompts will be revealed now, so everyone has time to make something. between now and the week of november 12th, you’ll create fanworks about the prompts, and then post it on the corresponding day during november 12th - 18th!
don’t forget to tag this tumblr (asouefanworkevent) in the post so i can find it and reblog it, and tag the post with #woevember !
what do you mean by fanwork?
everything! fanfic and fanart are of course allowed, but woevember has always been meant to be an event that is as big or as little effort as you want! fanwork also means edits, gifs, analysis posts, headcanons!! your cosplay!! your photography!! your photosets!! your web weaving!! your super short fics!! your sketchiest drawings!! your most ramble-y half-fic idea posts!! your wip scenes!! you merely saying 'lemony snicket, though. am i right?????' (and you are. you're so right.) whatever you are moved to make from the prompts! i want people to be encouraged to and be able to create even something small that didn’t exist before for the snicketverse, and share it with other people!
are there any rules?
to keep the event open and comfortable for everyone, no explicit content. also, as always, sibling romance and age gaps will not be tolerated.
do i have to make something for every day?
only if you want to! feel free to just make something for one day if you want :) the point of having a different theme for each day is so some part of canon that you like comes up eventually, and you can at least make something for one of the days. or you get struck by an idea you might not have considered before! i want to get people thinking about all the intriguing people and places in asoue and atwq and the exciting different ways we can interpret and create from the same idea.
what are the prompts?
the description under each prompt is just some ideas to get your brain going -- feel free to take them in another direction too!
november 12th - olaf's mansion
to celebrate the 24th anniversary of the bad beginning! what becomes of the house post-canon? was it olaf's family home? what sort of nefarious, or, perhaps, completely innocent shenanigans have occurred here, pre-canon? does this house also have a secret passage somewhere?
november 13th - the baudelaire mansion
did beatrice and bertrand build the mansion? what sweet pre-canon moments have we missed with the baudelaire children and their parents? what visitors came there? do people still think the mansion remains are haunted post-canon? what sort of new home do the baudelaires make for themselves when they return to the city?
november 14th - the clusterous forest
the wild and lawless place. what was it before the water was removed? what sort of beach or shore was there? where did the water go? does it ever come back? what does lemony, or anyone else, find in there? does another train ever come through after the thistle of the valley? do the stain'd-by-the-sea crew ever go in to investigate it? what sort of rumors might be created about a place like the clusterous forest?
november 15th - the hotel denouement
the last safe place! is it vfd-owned, or denouement-owned? what happens down in the archives? are the archives ever found? what sort of firefighter or firestarter meetings have taken place here? what relationship might they have with the preludio hotel? what were the denouements up to at the hotel? what hotel, or what sort of home in general, might frank and ernest create for themselves post-canon, with dewey's absence?
november 16th - the masked ball
the duchess of winnipeg's masked balls have so much potential! what happened at that last one, where lemony tried to contact beatrice? when was that? what happened at past balls? what is the duchess's relationship with the parties? (whether the duchess is jacquelyn or r or jacquelyn is r's daughter is up to you, dear reader!) what costumes do they all pick! or is there even a different masked ball you might have in mind?
november 17th - the reptile room
to also celebrate the 24th anniversary of the reptile room! what becomes of this house post-canon? how did monty come to own the reptile room, where does his herpetology career fit into vfd? why was the quagmire mansion connected to it? how did jacques get there and find quigley? what other moments with the baudelaire children in the reptile room might we have missed -- or pre-canon moments with the baudelaire parents? do not forget about our beloved, the incredibly deadly viper!
november 18th - free space!
there's tons of other locations, too! prufrock prep, heimlich hospital, 667 dark avenue, paltryville, caligari carnival, the city, the punctilio, veblen hall, the orion observatory, the opera, the sewers, the hemlock tearoom and stationery shop, the museum of items, the museum of bad breakfast, the snicket mansion, the quagmire mansion, the island, the mortmain mountains, lucky smells lumbermill, wade academy, killdeer fields, anwhistle aquatics, the queequeg? or do you care not for locations! use the free space to write about the character or relationship or thought of your choosing!
if you have any questions about anything, feel free to drop me an ask or a message!
happy creating, and i hope to see lots of you november 12th-18th!! ✨

20 questions for fic writers!
Tagged by @feralrookie! :D Thank you for the tag!!
1. How many works do you have on ao3?
10! (technically, kinda)
2. What's your total ao3 word count?
379,547
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Just Bungou Stray Dogs! It's also the first fandom I've written for, actually. :D
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
This is how it feels to take a fall (Dazai goes feral, time shenanigans)
Plate :( (Dazai breaks a plate, experiences emotions)
Dazai and the Moving Detective Agency (Howl's Moving Castle AU)
Chuunyaa's Pawsitively Catastrophic Day (Chuuya is turned into a cat, it's short and pretty much just shenanigans)
Wish in one hand (First fic I wrote, and the first one I posted — Dazai has emotions about handholding)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to, but I've been absolutely terrible at it lately — whenever I'm particularly stressed I start worrying that the negative emotions are going to leak through into what I'm writing and make my tone sound weird, so then I end up turtling in on myself and not saying anything at all, no matter how much I want to engage with people. It's a bad habit, and I want to work on it, so I'm gonna try to catch up on comments! (I treasure every single one of the ones I receive, so for anyone who has left a comment and hasn't gotten a response from me yet, thank you and I am very sorry about my inability to form words in a timely manner skdjfksd)
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably An Unsent Letter, since it's pretty much just a short snippet of Dazai being sad while he's leaving the mafia. And even with that one, I have in my head that skk still get together after the four years apart, I just didn't write it. I am dreadful with sad endings — although the ending to "This is how it feels to take a fall" is a little bittersweet, perhaps.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Hmm...I'm gonna say Dazai and the Moving Detective Agency, because it's the one with the longest buildup, so I think it has the most catharsis, at least for me! But I tend to give all of my fics happy endings because, as established, I am a wimp when it comes to hardcore angst. I will say that Zut Alors I Have Missed One is probably a contender for happiest as well, just because that fic had no angst whatsoever and was just Unhinged
8. Do you get hate on fic?
Nope! Everyone's been lovely! I have gotten some for my art, but honestly it was pretty toothless and I couldn't take it seriously lol
9. Do you write smut?
...Yeh. :0 There was an attempt, at least — one fic, and I made it anonymous (so on the extreme off-chance that anyone notices a discrepancy between my total ao3 wordcount listed here and the summed up wordcounts of the fics viewable on my profile, that's why!) It's also another fic I need to finish, I hit my writing roadblock with that one at the same time as all my others, and it's almost doneeee I just need my brain to cooperate >:|
10. Do you write crossovers?
Not any proper crossovers, only things like the Howl AU and the Little Mermaid AU, where I took the settings/plots and put in BSD characters.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
...Possibly? I'm not actually sure, I've given a couple people permission, but I'm not sure if anything came of that, I haven't heard one way or another :0 I do have a tendency to use puns, which I realize might make things difficult for translations
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, not so far — and given how tempestuous my schedule has been, it'll probably be a while before I attempt anything like that! Sounds fun, though
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
...I mean, it's gotta be soukoku, because for all that I've enjoyed a lot of fictional pairings before (for example, Howl and Sophie specifically from the HMC books, Beatrice and Benedick from Much Ado About Nothing — I like bickering duos, what do you know — Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane, currently falling down the Hualian rabbithole because I'm reading Heaven Official's Blessing with my friend, and there's lots of other ones), for as much as I like all those, I haven't really had much of an urge to write anything for them.
So, purely in terms of me wanting to mess around with two characters and write them over and over and over again, it's really only skk! They hit the exact right combination of braincells, I guess lololol
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but probably won't?
Hmmm...honestly, most of my WIPs I still intend to finish at some point or another — first priority being the ones I've already started posting, of course! Although...just due to time constraints, I might not get around to writing the thief!Chuuya/detective!Dazai one I was planning a while back. (and I mean a WHILE lol) I didn't write very much of it, and honestly most of the reason I wanted to write it was for comedy — so maybe I'll turn it into a short comic series instead, because I do think some of the bits were funny :0
16. What are your writing strengths?
That's a hard one; I tend to look more at the ways I want to improve my writing then at what I like about it, and I nitpick just about everything I create, art and writing alike. But if I had to pick something, I would probably say dialogue? That tends to be what I write easiest, at least. I still want to get better at that too, though.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Descriptions and action scenes. I've been making myself write them more, so I think I'm slowly improving (the Howl AU has been great for that! It pushed me to write all sorts of scenes I wouldn't have normally :D ), but those two things remain what I get bogged down by the most.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Depends on the circumstances, I think? I'd include translations if I did. I do tend to include Japanese honorifics when I'm writing in the canon universe, because there's not really english equivalents and it feels like I'm leaving something out when I just do their names straight — although I did take them out when I was doing the Howl AU and the Little Mermaid AU, just as a setting thing.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Bungou Stray Dogs — like I mentioned in the ship section, this is the first fandom where I've really felt the urge. Although I did write things when I was little that very blatantly yoinked in various creatures and concepts from the things I was reading and watching, which resulted in stories with pirates and weeping angels and Ringwraiths all running around in the same place. But I didn't usually bother with bringing in actual characters from those pieces of media, or even using the settings, I just made ocs and had them run around in my own made up world.
20. Favorite fic you've written?
I like all of them for different reasons, but I think my favorite overall has to be Dazai and the Moving Detective Agency. It's the longest thing I've ever written, and when I started out I wasn't sure I'd be able to do it — so the fact that it's most of the way done (currently chipping away at the epilogue, it is getting to be a LOT of words) makes me really happy. And it's just been so much fun! Writing characters I hadn't before, piecing the world together, working out the magic system, writing Dazai being a mess and Chuuya being cool, it's all been a blast. And I seriously need to finish the epilogue, because the followups are living in my brain and they demand to be freed aksdfjksdjfk
But yeah! I'm not sure how many writers I know on here have already been tagged, so I'll just go open tags on this one! :D If any of y'all write and feel like doing this, then go for it!

I just saw your account and can I request Tobias x Reader?
Reader is from Erudite and she and Four are the same age. Both of them were top of their class and became trainers. The reader goes by the name 2 sometimes, as a joke. She has a younger sister who also join Dauntless and Reader and Four are just a total power couple. Reader is also Divergent and knows Four’s real name and that he is divergent too. So the day when Tris kissed Four, he moves so she only kisses his cheek. Tris then thinks that Four is shy and likes her. But the next day the reader is very tired from staying up all night helping a kid who was sick, comes and Four kisses her and gives her his jacket. So Tris is really heartbroken since she was the only one who didn’t know about their relationship. Reader and her sister ( who are really close) also hate Tris. Reader is pretty shy and sweet but she has a bitchy face that scares people away a lot.
I hope I am not bothering you… Feel free to tag my name
do you ever think about how tris is really just a y/n in disguise
masterlist
Tumblr media
Tris does not know what is coming for her.
Some time in the future, she may be able to look back on all that happened and realize what she never did back then. She’ll connect the dots with far more clarity than she ever could at the time. Hindsight is always easier to understand than the present moment. Tris cannot be held accountable for that, and neither can you.
At the moment that Beatrice Prior became just Tris, your story had already long since begun. She was still in denial back in Abnegation when you made a decision in your own round of the Choosing Ceremony. She would not have been there to see how it all went down, but you were.
Perhaps she heard about what happened through word of mouth. Most new Dauntless come from Dauntless with the exception of a wayward Candor or two that decide the truth is beneath them. You were an exception, then. When Beatrice heard about the sharp-eyed Erudite girl who dashed her blood into Dauntless’ vessel, do you think she thought about it later that night when no one else was watching? Do you think she heard about what you did and realized that she could do it too?
No one will know for sure, none but Tris herself. After what happened, you doubt she would ever be so candid as to let you know. You can guess, though. You can take your time and wonder about what might have gone down in a grayed out faction where a girl heard for the first time that she might be able to have a life outside of endless sacrifice.
There is one story that she most certainly did not hear at the time, however, and this one would hit a little closer to home. At the very moment that Beatrice Prior was wondering what would become of this year’s round of transfers, another boy was making waves by switching to Dauntless. He was Abnegation too, and at the moment that he let his blood plummet into Dauntless’ bowl, he was as good as dead.
Later, Tris will wonder how she didn’t connect Four to the boy she had met before, Tobias Eaton. In truth, it’s because every step was taken to ensure that nobody else would. Marcus Eaton’s son died the moment he got the chance to leave his old life behind. Tobias Eaton was buried in a shallow grave under the cover of night, left to the mercy of scavengers like time and poor memory to make up his legacy. Abnegation did not want its followers to think that escape was an option, so he was covered up.
Perhaps, then, the only one Beatrice heard about was you. Tobias was simply one in the crowd at that point, nameless and utterly without character. Every single facet of him had disappeared the second he chose to step away from Dauntless. The boy standing by your side in the Dauntless section of the Choosing Ceremony was staring at his bleeding palm and wondering whose history he could end next. He was no one, not until he remade himself again upon entering Dauntless.
Regardless of what Beatrice did or did not think of the two of you at that moment, your future was set in stone. You bid Erudite goodbye and ran out of the city center with the rest of the assembled Dauntless once the Choosing Ceremony was over. You had analyzed your decision over and over in the preceding months, so you had no regrets at the moment. All there was to do was run free and wild in the sun, and let your body think that it could do whatever you asked of it.
Like Tris, you also had to leap from the roof and deal with the aftermath of what you found when you fell. Like Tris, your first encounter with the boy who was once called Tobias Eaton and would later be whispered of as Four was life-changing. You were one of the first jumpers, he was one of the second. It was the two of you in an empty hall, lingering by the edge of the net and watching the graduated Dauntless pace back and forth at the edges of the room. The horizons seemed to shift where the black-suited faction lingered to watch, and in the middle of all of it, you found one point of stability.
Four.
You don’t remember what name he gave when he first jumped down, if he even gave a name at all. He didn’t seem to use one until he progressed into the fear landscapes and was able to be rewarded with his famous nickname. Perhaps he had gone by Tobias all that time before then, but if he had, it had never seemed real. Tobias was a prop to be discarded at a moment’s notice. It suited Four no more than the gray cloth still clinging to his back.
In the time to come, you would watch with the same awe as the rest of the faction as Four quickly rose up through the ranks of initiates. Obviously, no Abnegation would ever have a chance to learn how to fight, but that didn’t excuse Four from being uncannily good at it. He knew how to throw a punch from the moment he arrived, although that could have just been from watching someone else do it. Sometimes lessons are learned from watching the imprints of your own bruises flower on your skin.
Dauntless forgave Four of his Abnegation heritage quickly. You doubt most people even remember he once wore gray instead of black. To suggest that cold, deadly Four could ever have been giving or merciful is laughable. Dauntless’ Four is the pride of their faction. He makes no mistakes and he tells no secrets. No one could ask for anything more.
Why, then, would you? Why would you seek him out after that first meeting? Was the fall from the roof not enough of a rush for you, that you had to track down the one person capable of making your head spin? In the end, you suppose you’ll never really know why you chose Four, only that you did and it is the best thing you could have ever done for yourself.
Choosing Four was choosing survival. You were Divergent and so was he. Maybe that’s why everything went so south so quickly. You were never meant to live past discovery. You should have woken up to a gun pointed at your head the moment someone found out that the dots weren’t connecting for why you were here and not in your home faction.
You always thought that the first person to figure you out would have been someone back from Erudite. They were always too damned clever, every single one of you. They delighted in figuring out people’s past mistakes, every single loophole they’d ever tripped. Death knows what they would have done to you had they known.
The only thing that might have saved you also damned you. See, Erudite was as sickly brilliant as a smoking gun, but so in turn were you. You knew the perfect answer to say to every question. You knew what to do in the aptitude test so no one would question you. To any onlooker, every bone of yours seemed to be laid bare, when in reality you hadn’t given a thing away.
It was the only thing you could do, but it was exactly what revealed you. Four knew you were as sharp as a blade, both in violence and in mind, and he knew that no one like you would have ever left Erudite if you didn’t have something to hide. What is the only thing in this world that would ever make you fear discovery? Why, the same thing that made him flee to Dauntless’ shadows as opposed to any other place to hide. Divergence.
He had to be the first one to say it aloud. You would never expose a weakness in yourself unless you had a choice. That was the initial moment in which you finally laid down at least part of your armor. In the weeks to come, you would shed more and more of it, until at last the young woman that you became could be the first one to say ‘I love you’ instead of having it be the other way around. You are not the Y/N that came into Dauntless, and you don’t know that you could ever be her again.
That is the wonderful thing about this faction, what it can do to change you. Beatrice learned this as well, you know. You were there to see it start to happen for the first time. She was just the right sort of ember to fanned into a flame around here, and you let it happen.
You should have known from the moment you saw Beatrice Prior become Tris that she would be a threat to you. Instead, you saw a girl not unlike yourself and you welcomed her with a smile. You had been trying to be more forgiving. That is Four’s worst curse on you.
Perhaps it’s because Tris reminds you of your sister. They’re the same age, they both jumped around the same time. In some better world, perhaps Tris would have turned to your sister for a source of friendship instead of looking to your boyfriend for some sort of comfort. That way, far less troubles would be raised, and perhaps you and Tris could see each other as hesitant friends instead of whatever has become of the two of you now.
The worst part is that you could almost see it happening. You and Tris are damned near identical. Both first jumpers, both Divergent, both fleeing a home that could never be truly yours, and worst of all, both in love with Four. How is Tris any better than you? How are you any worse? She made the exact same choices you did, but because you got there first, you get everything and she gets nothing. It is relentlessly unfair, but that is Dauntless; that is life. Nothing in this world will be yours unless you take it. In her defense, that is exactly what Tris tried to do.
Four told you the first time he suspected she had feelings. You and Four are nothing if not honest with each other. He wanted to let you know that something may happen, partially as a warning and partially also in the hopes of using you as a tool to stave off Tris’ crush. You’re a training instructor alongside Four and Eric, so it wouldn’t be difficult for Four to let you handle Tris instead of trying to teach her himself to encourage some distance.
That’s what you did the first few weeks, at least, but Tris got clever. She really is like you, isn’t she? You can’t possibly hold that against her, but it’s not like you have any other choice. Tris tried too hard to have what she could not. There was no way the two of you could be anything other than enemies. That is what becomes of our doubles, cruel universe; you see yourself in another body and you cannot do anything but despise it.
Four dropped by your place late one night, later than usual. He had a haunted look in his eyes, the sort of guilt you only see on him when he wakes up with a nightmare, muttering the name of a boy long since dead. It wasn’t his fault, he says. He didn’t know what she was trying to do until it was already done.
Here is how it went down, from what Four tells you and what you can pick up from his social cues alone:  Tris had been in trouble. Four has always been a savior, he was certainly yours enough times for it to stick in your head. When Four had come across the scene, he would be able to do nothing if not help. Tris had been grateful, both for the rescue and what she took as a final confirmation of Four’s feelings. She had tried to kiss him. He had moved so she only kissed his cheek. Still, it was a touch that was not yours.
What can you do about that? Tris is not going to go away. Even after initiation ends, she will be a strong member of your faction. Obviously, Four doesn’t want this, but how does he put a stop to it? Eventually, the two of you brainstorm a solution, and go to sleep with no more guilt curled up on the inside of each other’s throats.
You’re helping in the medical wing the next day. Tris is there as a check up to make sure that she was alright after last night’s incident. You don’t treat her, as there are enough patients to fill up anyone’s schedule, but Tris is still there to see what happens when Four drops by. In a perfectly orchestrated move, he gives you his jacket the second you shiver and presses a kiss to your lips. It is a neon sign in the dark, she cannot miss it.
And she doesn’t. You can see Tris’ face crumble across the room, and she quickly turns away to hide her surprise and anguish. You had thought that everyone in Dauntless knew about you and  Four, but it turns out that is only true now. Tris might have been the last to know, but she’s learned her lesson now. You don’t have the heart to hold it against her.
At the end of the day, how could you? Dauntless trains its soldiers to fight for what they want. It is not Tris’ fault that you already did. She will go about her days with a sinking feeling in her stomach, a bit of blood spilled where her heart had previously been healed, but eventually she will be able to act as if nothing ever happened. Soon enough, it will almost be true. Tris will find a new meaning to fill her days.
How do you know this with such certainty? It is exactly what you would have done.

Inspired by this because @missamyshay is a menace
MJ is exhausted.
She’s not sure what she expected about becoming the lead— the grueling rehearsals and back and forth and back again from fickle directors is something MJ’s been more than aware of ever since she started auditioning.
She’s worked her way up from the chorus to the secondary, never really getting the chance to be front and center until her last play Turtle Drive became a runaway hit— surprising everyone, least of all herself, with how well people responded to it.
Critics were divided, as to be expected from a biopic of a forgotten 90s singer but audiences were engrossed— the one bright spot consistently done in reviews being that of MJ’s performance as the stereotypically sassy Black best friend, having a song that felt on the nose in its satire despite how much MJ tried to sell it.
And sell it she did, with every ounce of her being— determined to prove that she had the chops to make it and move above the bit parts she’s always been relegated to.
Tuttle Drive’s success paved the way for her role now as Edith in Taking Flight, a monstrous beast of a thing that sought to combine all of Shakespeare’s works together in a fictional town out of New England.
Edith was a difficult character, an impossible amalgamation of Juliet, Ophelia, Katharina, and Beatrice that made MJ’s head spin. When she first read the script, she had thought it was daring and inventive— interesting and so very different.
Now, after weeks of rehearsal on a spinning turn table and going over numbers that felt less innovative and more confounding— MJ was beginning to wonder if she had made a mistake.
It’s what she’s thinking of, amongst other things like what she’ll finally get to eat today when she sees a shadow pass over her— glancing up and seeing a familiar rush of red and blue.
“How you doing tonight, ma’am?” Spider-Man asks, MJ smirking as she glances up and then keeps walking.
“Just fine, spidey,” she says, imagining the look on Peter’s face underneath the mask. He has a habit of doing this, finding her on his patrol in what the calls an attempt to make sure she’s okay.
What MJ isn’t so fond off are the Daily Bugle reports later, hating the idea that her new play might get even more press in all the wrong ways as she hears him snort.
“What’s the hold up, lady?” He says, his voice shifting until it’s that odd mix of a Transatlantic newscaster and old-school New Yorker. “You got somewhere to be?”
“I do actually,” she says, glancing up as he hops from one branch to another. “My husband’s waiting for me.”
“Is he now?” Peter asks, MJ seeing some tourists out of the corner of her eye. “Must not be a good one then.”
“Excuse me?” She asks, glancing up only for Peter to make his presence known in the weirdest way possible.
He knows that she loves him entirely but the more spidery parts of him were her least favorite.
Which is why Peter— hanging upside down right in front of her— was all but an act of war as she frowns.
“Pretty lady like you, walking the streets all by yourself?” He clicks his tongue in disapproval. “What kinda man is that?”
“Are you saying I can’t walk home by myself?” She asks teasingly, watching as he tilts his head.
“I think you can do anything you set your mind to Miz Watson,” he says, his tone still joking even if MJ can still hear the sincerity in it. He knows how much she’s been worried about the play and while he can’t say as much here and now— with a family of tourists staring at the two of them intently. “Why, you’re a famous Broadway star.”
“Not that famous.”
“Famous enough that it can be dangerous, walking here all by your lonesome,” he says, hearing the laugh in his voice.
MJ glares at him, the white eyes of the mask staring back at her.
“Well, miz Watson?” He asks, MJ holding back the urge to laugh from his dumb accent. “What do you say?”
“I guess,” she says with a laugh.
“Trust me, ma’am. No sirree, you won’t regret it,” he says, seeing the bystanders around them turn.
This will definitely end up trending somewhere, seeing the phone angled in her direction.
Never have, she thinks to herself as Spider-Man loops his arms with hers and leads them forward— trusting him to take her home.

“Marcus you really didn’t have to.” she tells him once she is done sending Rooster the message, frowning a bit because he hasn’t replied - anxiety goes brr immediately - but hides it as she grins at Marcus, “I love it,truly.”
Marcus grinned, his eyes lighting up with satisfaction. "Anything for you, darling. It suits you perfectly, and it's not just about the blazer; it's about reminding you to embrace a bit of color."
Beatrice smiled appreciatively at Marcus's thoughtful gesture. "I needed this, Marcus. Sometimes we get so caught up in the, well, mess that we forget to find joy in the little things. Thanks for reminding me."
As she spoke, her phone buzzed, and Beatrice's heart skipped a beat. She quickly checked it, relieved to see a message from Rooster.
Roos (15:15)
Gorgeous, meeting with Cyclone went as expected. Will update you soon. Love you.
A sigh of relief escaped Beatrice's lips as she read Rooster's message. She replied quickly.
Bea (15:16)
Take your time, Rooster. We'll be here when you're ready. Love you too.
Marcus watched her with a knowing smile. "Everything okay?"
Beatrice nodded, slipping her phone back into her pocket. "Yeah, just Rooster messaging me, he’s in the middle of something trying to unravel some mystery. He uh,he also liked the blazer."
“Well, I'm glad he approves. And, you know, if he's caught up in a mystery, maybe the lavender will bring a bit of serenity to his day."
"You might be onto something there, Marcus. I hope so." she looks down at her kids who were now napping in the baby room, and she sighed, “...can I ask you something?”
“Sure,darling.”
“Have you ever had to deal with…weird…people? You know, nosy people.”
Marcus's expression turned thoughtful as he considered Beatrice's question. He leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. "Well, darling, the world is full of all sorts of characters. In my line of work, I've encountered my fair share of nosy individuals. It comes with the territory, you know?"
Beatrice nodded, chewing the inside of her cheek "Yeah, I can imagine. But how do you deal with it? Especially when it gets too intrusive?"
Marcus chuckled, propping his hand against his cheek. "It requires finesse, my dear. First and foremost, maintain your composure. Don't let them see they've struck a nerve. People like that thrive on reactions."
"Right," Beatrice agreed, grimacing a bit. "What else?"
"Choose your battles wisely. Not every nosy person deserves a confrontation. Sometimes, it's better to let them have their curiosity and watch them tire themselves out," Marcus advised.
"That makes sense," Beatrice mused. "But what if it's someone who's not just curious but seems to have an agenda? Like, they're prying into things that shouldn't concern them."
"In that case, my dear, it's time to set boundaries. Politely but firmly let them know that certain matters are private and not up for discussion. Be assertive without being aggressive. It's about making them understand that they've crossed a line."
Beatrice took mental notes, grateful for Marcus's guidance. "And what if they persist? What if they don't take the hint?"
"Ah, persistence. A tricky one," Marcus mused, holding his index finger up. "In such cases, escalate the response gradually. Increase the assertiveness of your boundaries. If they still don't get the message, then you might need to be more direct. Address the issue head-on, but always maintain a level of civility. Remember, you're in control of the narrative."
She nodded, absorbing the advice while tapping her phone against her palm. "Thanks, Marcus. I just... I've been dealing with someone like that lately. Rooster warned me about her, and now it seems she's trying to dig into things she shouldn't."
Marcus's gaze turned sympathetic. "Oh, the persistent one. Well, my dear, trust your instincts.”
“Yeah,I’ve been hearing that…a lot.”
He just smiled, holding his hand up Well, darling, you've got to protect what matters to you, whether it's your personal life or the people you care about. And if this nosy individual is causing you distress, it's time to take a stand."
“But I did.Several times.”
Marcus leaned forward, his expression more serious. "If you've already set boundaries and the person persists, it might be time for a direct conversation. Let them know, without ambiguity, that their actions are unwelcome and causing you distress. Sometimes, clarity is the key."
Beatrice frowns, rubbing her knuckles nervously. "You think so?"
“Well.” Marcus patted her hand reassuringly. "Conflict is inevitable, my dear, especially when you're defending what matters. But it doesn't mean you have to go looking for it. Handle it with grace, and if the person still doesn't relent, well, then you've done what you can."
Beatrice sighed, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders for a second, smiling down at his hand on hers. "Thanks, Marcus.I just want to protect my family from unnecessary drama."
"You're a strong woman, Beatrice. You'll handle this with grace, I'm sure. And remember, you've got friends who'll stand by you. Like Shells."
‘Well,Shells wants to beat this woman up, not talk, hah.” she rubs her neck “Shells is more of a 'knock some sense into them' type. But yeah..."
Marcus nodded, a twinkle in his eye. "Sometimes, a good friend who's ready to throw a punch can be quite reassuring."
The laughter eased the tension in the room, and Beatrice felt a renewed sense of determination. She glanced at her phone, realizing she needed to get back to her responsibilities.
"Thanks again, Marcus. Your advice is always valuable."
"Anytime, my dear. Now, do you need to go? There’s so much I’d like to talk about and the kids are sleeping so nice in here."
Beatrice smiled, appreciating the warmth of Marcus's company. "I'll be back, promise. The kids adored their time but I have work tonight, and I need to call my parents."
The fashion designer chuckled, tilting his head in agreement. "Well, very well, let me help you out then."Marcus gracefully stood up, extending a hand to Beatrice. "I'll walk you all out, my dear. And don't forget, fashion advice is just a call away. We've got a wardrobe to update for the Lavender Blazer Committee."
Beatrice chuckled, picking Nicole up while Marcus pushed the twins’ strollers forward.
As they reached the entrance, Marcus paused, his eyes twinkled once more. "And when the drama gets too overwhelming, remember, a fabulous outfit can be a powerful shield. Strut in confidence, my dear. Strut." he snaps his fingers, “And make them wish they were you.”
“Ha,I’ll try Marcus.” Once outside, the vibrant cityscape greeted them. The hustle and bustle of the streets contrasted with the tranquility of Marcus's studio, well, partially since there was enough hustle and bustle there too. She smiles when he helps her putting the kids inside, “Thank you,Marcus.”
Marcus grinned, a theatrical flair in his gestures as he bows down to the waist. "Anytime, my dear. Now, remember the power of a well-strutted exit. Drama may try to follow you, but it'll have a hard time catching up with fabulousness."
Beatrice laughed, cheeks burning a bit, feeling a genuine sense of upliftment from Marcus' words. "I'll keep that in mind, Marcus. Thanks for the advice, the blazer, and just being the fabulous person you are."
"Flattery will get you everywhere, darling," Marcus replied with a playful wink. "Now, off you go. Conquer the world."
Beatrice waved goodbye to Marcus, she drove back home. She shouldn’t be surprised at all to who was sitting outside. She found Shells waiting by the front steps, she immediately noticed the lavender blazer and raised an eyebrow.
"What's with the fancy get-up?" Shells asked, a playful smirk on her face.
Beatrice blinked, she barely parked the car,Jesus. "A gift from Marcus. You noticed it from afar??”
Shells shrugged nonchalantly. "Yeah, the blazer practically screams 'look at me.' Figured you were getting all dolled up for a special occasion. What's the occasion?"
"No special occasion, just Marcus being Marcus. Help me get the kids out, please.” she walks out, fixing the blazer with care and smiling at herself, “They are still asleep Shells,so. I’ll get the twins and you get Nikki?”
“Sure, hey, gimme a ride to work?”
“Oh?” she asks while grabbing the babies, “..why?”
Shells shrugs, picking Nicole and closing the door for her friend, “My car broke down,so.”
Beatrice chuckled, shaking her head as she grabs her house keys from her back pocket. "Honestly, Shells, I think your car has finally decided to stop you from drifting around the streets."
Shells laughed, adjusting Nicole in her arms. "Yeah, seems that way. But hey, a ride to work means I owe you one. Maybe you can cash in the favor when I'm dealing with the aftermath of this car disaster."
"Deal. Let's just hope your car doesn't turn into a recurring character in our lives."
As they settled walked inside, greeting the three dogs along the way, Shells couldn't help but notice the lavender blazer. "So, the blazer isn't for a special occasion? You're just casually strolling around in it?"
Beatrice shrugged, waiting until Shells and Nikki were inside to close the door. "Marcus being Marcus, you know. You don’t like it?"
Shells chuckled, glancing down at her own casual attire. "Well, I didn't get the 'dress up for no reason' memo. But hey, you look good in lavender. Very...grown-up."
Beatrice shot her a teasing smile. "Grown-up? “
“Yeah…uh..momwear you know.”Beatrice settled the twins into their playpen, ensuring they continued their peaceful slumber, while Shells released Nicole to nap alongside her siblings
"Seriously, though," Shells continued, plopping down on the couch, "Marcus gives you a lavender blazer out of the blue, and there's no special occasion? That guy works in mysterious ways."
Beatrice joined her on the couch, trying to stifle a yawn. "Yeah, he's something else. Probably just his way of saying, 'Hey, you can be fabulous without a reason.' You know how he is."
Shells grinned  "True that…also I lied."
“What?”
“I’m not only here because of a ride…I have steaming hot gossip.” she smirks, “From Mirandaaa…”
"Miranda gossip? "
Shells leaned in, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Okay, so apparently, Miranda has been snooping around, asking questions about you and Rooster."
Beatrice's fatigue transformed into a surge of alertness. "What? Why? “
Shells shrugged, a sly grin on her face both hands up. "Well, I think she's on a mission to uncover the great mystery of your relationship. Maybe she's writing a novel or starting a detective agency. Who knows?"
Beatrice rolled her eyes. "Come on, Shells. This is serious. What did Miranda say?"
Shells smirked. "Relax, Bea. I'm just messing with you. She didn't say much, just asked about your connection with Rooster. I gave her the classic 'none of your business' response, of course." she pauses, “Then she went to my aunt who also basically told her to fuck off.”
Beatrice sighed, rubbing her temples. "...makes sense.”
“What?”
“...well…Mark might be…uh…involved in things.”
Shells mouth dropped “What?!”
Beatrice leaned back on the couch, running a hand through her hair. "Yeah, I don't have all the details, but apparently, there were some …stuff? Rooster's investigating, and Miranda seems to be poking around, trying to piece things together what we know."
Shells whistled, her eyes widening. "...holy shit.”
"That's what Rooster is trying to find out. It's all hush-hush, classified stuff. But Miranda being Miranda,i just think she's digging around, asking questions. Rooster warned me to be cautious around her."
"So, Miranda is basically trying to know..what you know about it?”Bea nodded “Great."
Beatrice sighed. "Yeah, we need to be careful about what we say and who we share information with. If Mark is involved in something sensitive, the last thing we want is for Miranda to use what we know against us….if it’s true.”
Shells leaned back, crossing her arms. "This is getting messier by the minute. And here I thought our biggest concern was your mom giving Vice-Admiral Simpson a piece of her mind."
Beatrice chuckled, the tension momentarily easing. "Well, that's still a concern, but with Miranda snooping around and Mark's mysterious…mystery, it feels like we have to be extra alert.”
“Hm…well then maybe I uh…shouldn’t share the other part of Miranda’s questions.”
"Other part? What else did Miranda ask?"
"Okay, promise not to get mad."
Beatrice sighed, "Just spill it, Shells."
"Alright, alright. So, besides asking about your connection with Rooster, she also inquired if uh…well…the kids…." she licked her lips, clearly not wanting to continue, “Were…you know…”
Beatrice's eyes narrowed, "If the kids were what, Shells?"
Shells winced, realizing the sensitivity of the topic. "She asked if the kids were Rooster's."
Pause.
A long and heavy pause.
“..what.”
Shells raised her hands in a placating gesture. "I know, I know! I told her it was ridiculous, and to fuck off and considering how much you and Rooster fuck–I mean uh–shit you are mad as fuck."
Beatrice's gaze was icy,  and Shells recognized the signs – the calm before the storm, the quiet anger that was often more dangerous than an explosive rage. Beatrice's voice, when it finally cut through the silence, was deceptively composed.
"You...told her what?"
Shells winced again at the controlled fury in Beatrice's tone. "I…I told her to fuck off Bea. She didn’t ask outright and–where are you going?!” she saw Bea pace around the room while dialing her phone.
“I need Michael to come over.”
“...why?”
“I can’t leave my kids alone as I beat a bitch up.”

Warrior nun prompt: Jealous Ava. We can't get enough of Jealous Ava.
thank you, anon!
It starts simply enough.
The first time, Ava’s behind the bar. She’s in the middle of a long, long conversation with Hans—the product of a dead Tuesday afternoon. She’s just been right about something completely unimportant and is poised to gloat when a customer enters.
The woman is probably in her twenties. She’s got short brown hair and a bunch of tattoos and piercings and Ava thinks: this girl is cool. A cool new friend.
“Hey! What can I get you?” She says with the best welcoming grin she can manage.
The girl is aloof too, which adds to the cool. She orders a negroni and stands at the bar with her back to Ava while she makes it. Thing is, a person can only be so aloof before it gets objectively not cool, and Ava’s picked up on the vibe before she puts all her eggs in the friend basket. She’s cracking open a new bottle of Campari when the rest of the metephor-eggs fall right out.
Bea’s posted up in her little corner like always, going over the books like there's nothing more important. She goes over the books like, eight times a day, but it’s Beatrice and Beatrice never does anything by half-measures. She fills every cup to the brim, every line of every page in perfectly-spaced script.
And without her knowledge, this woman, this once-cool woman is leering at her.
If Beatrice could wrest her focus away from a task without a fight breaking out, like, ever, then maybe she’d see. Maybe she’d give the woman one of those looks that could cut glass and send her running. Ava’s seen it before—that’s what real cool is.
But Beatrice has her nose in the binder, maneuvering her pen through her fingers with the expertise of someone who can knife someone between the eyes from across a room. Ava drops her orange twice.
“Negroni,” Ava announces, none too kind.
She starts cleaning and the fucking woman doesn’t even turn to look—doesn’t even thank her. She just grabs her drink and walks right over to Beatrice and sits at her table.
That’s Bea’s fucking table, Ava thinks. That’s her personal space.
Obviously they’re going to have a situation, because Bea is going to knock the shit—
Bea closes her binder, smiles—smiles at the woman.
Does she know this asshole? Beatrice is an excellent judge of character, there’s no way she’d give the time of day to—
They’re talking.
“Uh… Ava?”
She doesn’t take her eyes off the table. “Huh?”
It's Hans. “The, uh—the glass is clean.”
…so it is.
~
The woman is back.
She’s lucky they’re busy and Hans is the only one that can take her order for her stupid idiot negroni because if it were up to Ava? Oh—
Discreet, she hears Bea’s voice in her head.
Yeah, but she can get into a little bar fight. It’s just that this woman is rude. She sees her being rude to Hans too, from across the bar. Same bullshit as last time.
Luckily, Bea doesn’t have to field this woman today, because she’s retreated to her hidey hole upstairs. She goes up there when they get busy, this Ava knows. Maybe if Ava popped up to check on her, to let her know not to come down until the woman is gone—
Bea’s coming down the stairs. Shit.
Ava watches the exact moment the woman clocks Bea, and Bea—ever perceptive—notices her too.
The woman raises her glass towards Bea, and Ava wants to throw up. Lame. Lame, lame, how stupid and lame.
But—and this is maddening—Bea walks right up to the woman and accepts a hug.
“Excuse me?”
She feels like her head’s going to detach she whips it around so fast. “What?”
The patron looks affronted. “A beer. Give me one.”
Ooooh she does not have a wherewithal to fight this man and the woman bothering Beatrice. She shoves a beer into his hand and when she turns to look, both Bea and the woman are gone.
Something cold slips down her spine, and she doesn’t stop to think about what it might be.
~
The third time it happens, Ava has to do something.
Twice is a coincidence. Thrice? No.
The woman doesn’t even go to the bar first, she heads right for Bea and Bea gives her a hug and for fuck’s sake.
“Hey Hans?” She’s not really going to ask him. “I’m going to take a break.”
It’s four in the afternoon and her shift started thirty minutes ago. Hans is probably saying as much as she stalks towards Bea’s table, but she's not listening to anything but the blood rushing in her ears.
“Hey, welcome,” her voice is too loud, too grating. Whatever. “Did you need something from the bar?” The woman opens and closes her mouth like a fish, and Ava doesn’t give her a chance to respond. “Beatrice? Can you help me grab some more beers?”
Bea is on her feet in a second, which is excellent, but apologizes to the woman for leaving, which is not.
“Ava?” Bea’s asking, right behind her as they climb the stairs. “Ava, what is it? What’s wrong?”
“Who is that?”
“Who is—the woman I was sitting with?”
“Yeah. Yes. She comes around here all the time and sits with you! I just—I want to know who she is.” The moment it comes out of her mouth, the moment she can hear what she’s been thinking… Ava realizes how insane it sounds. “I mean. You—you know who I hang out with, right? Hans… uh. Jakob from the pool… that one time.”
Bea looks at Ava like she’s been slapped.
“Help me to better understand this, Ava.”
“Sure. Yes.”
“You brought me up here in… in a frenzy, as if something terrible had happened and you want to know—“ She stops, and in the moment of silence, Ava has a chance to… reflect. Beatrice takes a breath. “Her name is Ana,” Bea says, measured, “she’s a new friend.”
Ava nods like her head’s come undone, unsure of what the hell else to do.
Beatrice looks away. “She’s… she’s experienced many of the same things I have.”
Ava doesn’t realize until Beatrice speaks that she’s been holding her breath. It comes out in a rush, a sigh of relief, maybe? She hasn’t totally fucked up.
“Like what?” She tries.
Bea won’t look at her. “Our upbringings were… similar.”
The cold, ugly little thing in Ava’s spine makes itself known again. Beatrice doesn’t talk much about her childhood. Ava knows the basics: her education in the UK, the fact that she’s an only child, the shitty shitty reality of her parents—
Oh.
“Oh,” Ava says, dumb.
Beatrice nods. “It’s… comforting. To be understood.”
I understand you, the little ugly thing screams, smashing its shitty little fists against Ava’s ribs.
“I'm glad,” she says instead, and means it.
Bea looks at her then, and Ava can’t imagine that she doesn’t see what Ava’s feeling. She feels exposed. If Bea does, she doesn’t comment on it then, just smiles.
“Thank you, Ava,” she says, and it's enough.

Over The Garden wall = People aren’t as bad as you think
Earlier today I stumbled upon a Youtube video analyzing the animated mini-series Over the Garden Wall.  For those unfamiliar with it, Ove the Garden Wall is an animated TV mini-series from 2014 that told the story of two boys, Greg and Wirt, lost in a mysterious forest called “The Unknown.”  The story that plays out is very Wizard of Oz-esque and nearly all the visuals are based on vintage, turn of the century, New England postcards- particularly postcards from the late nineteenth century to 1930s for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and even Christmas, though mostly depicting autumn.  The characters and visuals from these vintage postcards adds to the surrealness of the setting.             Now this particular Youtuber happened to be a very Christian individual who seemed pretty certain that the black cat (Enoch) that we first see in the Pottsfield story was actually God.  And though I understood why this Youtuber believed this I did not agree with this particular stance.
Tumblr media
Yes, the people of Pottsfield are dead and happily enjoying their afterlife much like the dead in Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride but I do not think Enoch is meant to be God.  Again, I understand how he came to that conclusion but not everyone is C. S. Lewis.
One thing the Youtuber pointed out that I DO agree with, however, is the stance that Over the Garden Wall teaches us that people aren’t as bad as we’ve been made to think, that things aren’t always what they seem and aren’t always as dark or as sinister as they seem and I was a little surprised at myself that I hadn’t quite realized this was a recurring theme throughout the mini-series.  But as soon as he said it I knew it was true.      I hadn’t even consciously made this realization before but yes, this is one of the many reasons I love that mini-series. It’s so anti-cynical and wholesome.
Pretty much everyone and everything that Greg and Wirt encounter and Wirt thinks is a threat turns out to be benign, or out-right good, kind, and helpful.  The only characters that actually turn out to be evil and dangerous are Adelaide of The Pasture and The Beast.
First Greg and Wirt come across the suspicious woodsman and he’s just a sad old man being manipulated by The Beast.  Even the creature that attacks them is just a semi-possessed dog (Beatrice’s dog).  And the dog is harmless and no longer possessed by the end of the tale.
When the boys come to Pottsfield, first Wirt thinks the towns people are going to severely punish them for what they did. Instead they get a very minor punishment.  Also when Wirt thinks Greg and Beatrice have abandoned him, they were still there helping him get free.  And in the end the residents of Pottsfield were not a threat at all (despite the reveal that they were all skeletons wearing Pumpkin and straw bodies). Even at the tail end of the Pottsfield adventure, when the boys are invited to stay there’s no pressure or threat to it. The Pottsfield residents are genuinely decent (though dead) people.
Soon the boys find the old-fashioned schoolhouse with anthropometric animal students playing out a Shirley Temple-esque movie scenario.  It, at first, looks like the school teacher’s father is a classic style bad guy of the story.  Also the teacher’s lover has run off on her and abandoned her.  By the end of this story you find out her lover was just stuck in a gorilla costume that he had been wearing to earn money to marry her and her father had actually been afraid they’d have to close down the school. The school is saved by a charity concert and the teacher and her lover live happily ever after.
In the next chapter of Over the Garden Wall, the boys get to The Dark Lantern Inn.  And at first it looks like the people in the inn might be a threat.  Nope. The innkeeper is a Betty Boop-esque character and all her patrons seem to be self-aware storybook characters who expect everyone to be playing a particular (though easily explained) character role.  And they are eager to help you find your role in your story.
Then the boys meet the wealthy (and very eccentric) Quincy Endicott (who may or may not be a ghost as you see his tombstone later in the “Real world”).  Endicott thinks his mansion is haunted.  Fred the Horse (yes, a talking horse) is very suspicious and briefly gets Wirt to believe that Endicott might be a murderer who killed the lady of the house and will murder them.  No, he’s just a lonely old man who ends up falling in love with his business competitor (they both run tea companies and their mansions are accidentally connected).
Then we come to Adelaide of The Pasture who actually is evil.  When we, the viewers, meet Adelaide, it appears to us that she’s deceiving poor Beatrice. Not only does she want the boys as her slaves but also we get the chilling thought (as most modern viewers may) that she’s lying about the magical scissors that would turn Beatrice and her family human again (they were cursed to be bluebirds).  The easy assumption is that Adelaide was cruelly lying and that cutting off Beatrice’s wings (and her family’s wings) won’t turn them human.  It will just leave them mutilated birds who cannot fly.  But even the sinister Adelaide is not as bad as we are lead to think.  Yes, she’s a villain.  Yes, she wants the boys as her slaves.  But even her darkness is limited.
Tumblr media
After Adelaide is defeated Wirt takes the magical scissors and later gives them to Beatrice.  He only withheld them from her for so long because he was angry at her near betrayal.  And if we trust the epilogue in the last episode of Over the Garden wall, the scissors actually worked and Beatrice and her family are human again.
Tumblr media
Now we meet Lorna and Auntie Whispers.  At first it looks like the very weird looking  Auntie Whispers is a Baba Yaga-style witch who has been eating people and using Lorna for slave labor.  She even reveals that the evil Adelaide is her sister. The fact that Aunt Whispers is voiced by Tim Curry, who usually plays villains, also aids in the illusion.    Again we are misdirected.  Auntie Whispers is just trying to reign in the demon that is inside Lorna. She has been controlling it with the aid of a magical Bell. At first she looks like a cannibalistic witch or even crazed religious fanatic who has convinced Lorna that she’s evil, or somehow both.  No, she was just trying to protect Lorna from herself and others and to keep Lorna from killing other people.  She just didn’t consider that perhaps the magical bell to compel the demon might also be be used to banish the demon but Wirt figured it out.
It’s also revealed that Auntie Whispers is really just lonely and wanted Lorna to stay as her live-in companion and ultimately that’s the quiet life Lorna chooses.
Tumblr media
When the Woodsman finally finds out where the Adlewood trees really come from he turns against The Beast to help our protagonists.
Even Jason Funderberker, who Wirt kept building up as an attractive jock that he was jealous of, and insecure against as a rival, was revealed to be nothing more than an awkward nerd and not at all the way Wirt described or saw him.
Over the Garden Wall pretty much shows you that Greg’s innocent and trusting mindset is the better view to have.  It’s the opposite of most stories that tell you to be suspicious and to embrace cynicism.  And pretty much every time Wirt assumed the worst about someone (except in regard to Adelaide and The Beast) he was wrong.
Over the Garden Wall teaches you that often people are not as bad as you think.  Things aren’t always as they seem.  And though there are terrible people out there like Adelaide and The Beast, usually people aren’t as bad as you think they are.
I think this precious lesson has been lost for a long time.  People aren’t as bad as you think once you really get to know them.  No wonder I think of Over the Garden wall as comforting and chicken soup for the soul.

I love a avatrice with all my heart but sometimes we need bealil and God bless you and your dads fic!!
oh anon, darling, i think you meant this for my very talented friend @birgittesilverbae but while we’re here i’m 🤝 with you about dads it’s everything to me i think it’s so so brilliant, astonishingly beautiful in how it takes bea and lilith and understands them. there’s nothing i like more than a fic that (picture me crying) makes me go “oh god, oh fuck. she would fucking say that wouldn’t she?”
dads bealil is everything to me. these girls are divorced, they’re dating they share one whole braincell. their vibes are immaculate they’re the two biggest losers you’ve ever seen.
it’s the growing up so entangled with each other that they hardly know how to breathe alone. (it’s the learning to do that. alone so they can be together) it’s the please leave your scarf behind in my life but it’s a #1 dad mug and it’s oh, i left myself behind in your life but we can never go back
(you can’t take loved away)
fic: dads just gets bealil, i think. more importantly it understands both characters and it loves loves loves loves both characters. it’s lilith who cares so much, the “if i loved you less, i might be able to talk about it more.” how she just wants so loudly and both of them tripped up by their tongues.
the ache of loving so much and so long it sets you on fire and touching fans the flames and not touching makes the dead heat of longing sit under your skin. the inescapable gravity of them, two lives locked in orbit around what they both love (their daughter, each other) and the endless refrain of bealil that is the love didn’t change anything, it didn’t save anyone, but it still matters that the love was there.
it’s beatrice sifting through the ashes of their life it’s how impossible i find it to tell which of them is more in love. the quiet loud impossible affection bea has and holds, scalding her. (as long as we both shall live) holding a mug in the kitchen and broken by the brokenness of this love that’s as vital to her as a heartbeat.
dads just understands them both so much. they’re stupid, they’re married they’re divorced i hate them they love each other. they’re gentle and scalding and they can communicate in touches, without words when they speak the words run roughshod over each other they’re meant to be together they’re doomed (it doesn’t matter) they’re a two-body problem to which the solution is a three-body problem.
so, yeah, fic: dads is a masterpiece it’s a beautiful piece of storytelling and i’m glad you adore it because i do too

10 some # of characters | 10 some # of fandoms | 10 a negotiable number of tags
thank you for the tag beloved @poetikat <3 <3 <3
1) Hange Zoe + Levi Ackerman -- Attack on Titan. (They're a unit to me, okay?) Hange is an energetic ruthless clever jovial skilled enby who has captured my whole heart. Levi is crude and harsh and strong, someone who needs and deserves love AND HE WILL GET IT.
2) Beatrice the Golden Witch -- Umineko When They Cry. My ultimate "I support women's wrongs" character. Queerqueerqueerqueerqueer. I can't explain too much because MASSIVE SPOILERS but she is everything. ahahaha.wav (Her Japanese voice actress is freaking incredible.)
3) Renne Bright -- The Legend of Heroes series. My beloved Angel of Slaughter. What you've been through. How you've fallen. How you've gotten back up. How you've faced the demons of your past and the unexpected family in your present. You're loved for who you are, not what you could have been, and that's one of the most precious things I've ever seen.
4) Lloyd Bannings -- The Legend of Heroes series. I don't know where to start with this guy. I love him. I know I'm cheating by not choosing a different fandom here (even though he was introduced in a different game from Renne), but he is MY BOY. He sees the good in people and ensures that his actions are driven by evidence and truly cares about those around him. Part of my inspiration for OC Shion Miller tbh.
5) Toothless -- How to Train Your Dragon. Flying black cat who breathes fire. 'nuf said. :D
6) Mara Jade -- Star Wars. Female Force-using badass with a lightsaber and a dark background and red hair and falls for Luke and and and AUGH. She is why I fell for the Expanded Universe. She is why I fell out of love with Star Wars when Disney made those novels not canon. I still love Star Wars. I just can't engage the same way I used to.
7) Qifrey -- Witch Hat Atelier. I'm not even four volumes into this breathtakingly-drawn manga but this man provides one of THE best examples of a mentor-mentee relationship that I've ever seen in fiction. He sees his apprentices as individual, unique humans each with different strengths and different needs. And he teaches them magic in line with those strengths and those needs. While acknowledging that they're human and don't need to be perfect. He's the kind of mentor I want to be to my students.
8) Saeki Sayaka -- Bloom Into You. Oh girl. You deserve the world. And yet you fell for a girl who would ultimately fall for someone else. Despite all the things you did for her. It's fine. You're fine. You'll be okay. You'll find someone new. Who will love you and challenge you and and and I JUST LOVE HER ARC OKAY?
9) Anora Mac Tir -- Dragon Age. Queen. I love Loghain and she loves Loghain and SHE STANDS UP TO HIM. Yet her behavior UNDERSTANDABLY changes depending on whether the Warden spares her father. She deserves the world and more.
10) Ashley Williams + Kaidan Alenko -- Mass Effect. The one-or-the-other Virmire survivors (someday I may install the mod that enables both to live. SOMEDAY). I've romanced them with different Shepards. I've had those Shepards rekindle their relationships post-Horizon or never try. They're amazing wonderful nuanced characters who deserve more love.
Honorary mention: Lae'zel, Shadowheart, and Karlach from Baldur's Gate 3. I'm still in Act 2. There's so much I still don't know about these women. But I love them and I will defend them until I'm out of breath. And someday I will get to know Minthara and fall hard for her too.
no-pressure tagging @saraptor @spindleweedss @mxkelsifer @milesmentis @blightcaller @druckkugelschreiber @nightingalesighs @korblez @dr-paine @captastra @perhapsrampancy @socially-awkward-skeleton @valiantvillain and anyone else who might like to play~

Much Ado About Nothing: Count Claudio falls in love with Hero, the daughter of his host. Hero's cousin, Beatrice, and Benedict are each duped into believing the other is in love with them. Claudio is deceived by a malicious plot and denounces Hero as unchaste before they marry. Benedict wins Beatrice’s love defending her cousin’s honor, and to his surprise, Claudio is reunited with Hero, who he believed to be dead.
The Rover: During Carnival in Naples, anything can happen, especially when it comes to love. Florinda, a Spanish noblewoman, is in love with Belvile, an English cavalier who once saved her life. But her brother Don Pedro believes that Florinda should marry his best friend, Don Antonio. While Don Pedro goes out with his friends to celebrate, Florinda’s sister Hellena convinces the despondent woman to go out on the town in celebration--she might have a chance encounter with Belvile along the way! Belvile, an exiled Royalist, surrounded by his friends, pines for Florinda. Hellena, looking for some fun before she takes her vows at the convent, is attracted to Willmore, the rover and a scoundrel. But in addition to flirting with Hellena, Willmore also captures the attention of the beautiful courtesan Angellica Bianca--a woman desired by both Don Pedro and Don Antonio.
Propaganda under the cut!
Much Ado About Nothing:
if you have to pick one shakespeare play please let it be this one
Two idiots. Absolute morons. Neither of them like each other but get pranked so hard that they end up marrying. Also: Catherine Tate and David Tennant (of course). I love them. Any casting is brilliant, ALL the characters are fools.
A silly little play about a silly little group of people. Also it has enemies to lovers, some very extra people, and is a goldmine for good insults
if you watched this and didn't love Beatrice and Benedick I don't know what to say
The original enemies to lovers, “god that I were a man I would eat his heart in the marketplace” goes harder than any line ever, it’s also really funny
It's a very funny play about two people who do not wish to fall on love(Benedick and Beatrice) but during the seven days before the wedding of Hero and Claudio, the rest of the characters decide to make Benedick and Beatrice fall in love. In the end, they do end up falling in love with eachother.
Beatrice and Benedict are the blueprint for so many couples that came later
Enemies to lovers, but it's hijinks
The Rover:
carnival! comedy! restoration-era female playwrights don't disappoint!
Female playwright alert

i want to highlight the importance of warrior nun besides of the obvious (and incredibly important) wlw representation, because i see little pieces of myself everywhere in the show.
i see myself in ava, trying to enjoy a world that’s done nothing but show me how awful it can be. because i’ve never been quadriplegic and bound to a bed for twelve years, but i’ve been too depressed to leave my bed and know a portion of the pain of wondering if i’ll ever get to be outside again. i’ve fought demons no one else can see, and i’ve tried to run away from them even though i knew they’d catch up to me eventually, because living a tiny bit of life might make the eventual loss against them worth it.
i see myself in beatrice, trying to be good at everything i do and taking on more than i can handle to make sure i’ll still have value even when people realize i’m not who/what i’m supposed to be. because i, too, believe that hiding my feelings and being strong for everyone else will make me worth of their love. because maybe, if i hold back on what i really want and let others have it instead, maybe then their happiness will be enough to make me happy too.
i see myself in mary when i get out of my head and remember i need to fight for myself before fighting for anyone else. and like her, i also struggle to let people help me, because i’ve made myself believe i need to fight my battles on my own even if i refuse to let others do the same.
i see myself in lilith, fixating on one goal because if i can reach it, if i can be what i’m supposed to be even if i lose myself in the process, maybe then i’ll be enough to make people proud.
i see myself in camila, trying to see the best in every situation and hoping something out there will help me through it. because even if there is nothing or no one hearing my prayers and cries for help, maybe the hope that there is can be enough to guide me through the bad towards the light.
i see myself in vincent, running from a past i can never escape and putting my trust and hope in what/who i shouldn’t with the hope that it will redeem the pain and hurt i’ve caused with my mistakes.
i see myself in mother superion, fighting my own greed and resentment of people having what i lost because even if i don’t have it anymore, it doesn’t mean others don’t deserve to make the best of it and enjoy it while they have it.
and it’s not just the main characters that i see myself in. because i also see myself in chanel, figuring out who i really am and doing the efforts to love the true me while also seeing myself in jc, because loving the outside world with all of my being might make me forget that i don’t like who i am and where i come from all that much. and i also see myself in the town from 1x06, appreciating the new days because i don’t know when the darkness will come again.
warrior nun is so much more that the main relationship or an action show, and i need people who reduce it to just that to see that it’s also about hope and faith and fighting your pain and living another day because you never know when will be your last. it’s a show about figuring out who you are outside of what people want you to be, it’s about fighting the pain instead of succumbing to it. it’s about realizing that someone out there will see the true you, and one day you won’t have to hurt alone anymore.
warrior nun deserves so much praise and recognition for everything that it is and can be if given the chance, because very little shows have the ability of telling you exactly what you need to hear (directly or indirectly) no matter what that is, and warrior nun is one of them.
thanks to warrior nun i realized that, maybe, death doesn’t have to be the end, and i’ll forever be thankful for that.
