Day 29: Massive

Tom is raising his chin, mouth curling into an awed grin as he properly appreciates how brutally massive the Basilisk truly is. It’s hard to determine its length, coils wrapping and twisting and surrounding him as they are, but he’d be willing to bet on it being longer than forty feet. What he can determine is that its head is bigger than Tom’s entire body and it could certainly swallow him whole in a single bite.

Death stares him down and Tom stares right back.

a funny but slightly angsty trope i want to write for those tomarry time travel to the 40s aus is: when tom just… doesn’t gaf about the new transfer student. like imagine how funny that would be. harry thinking tom is just evil all the time, and trying to catch him in the act, but really, Tom is just studying super hard, and doesn’t have time to come up with any schemes.

Tom helping the first year students and Harry’s suddenly reminded that he was a good student and a role model, so if Harry accuses him of something he’d look insane.

Harry trying to join the K.O.W but pureblood supremacy being so much worse and Harry’s not allowed to join and is told hes worthless by fuckin’ walburga black or something. Since he’s not great at dueling in a formal setting, tom doesn’t take notice of him at all. He gets so frustrated, he can’t even punch tom, because tom would curse him so badly and harry would look crazy.

harry trying to confront Tom and telling him that he’s a time traveler and the prophecy and that lord voldemort becomes a joke in the future and Tom is like: woahhh, that’s crazyyyy, anyway, ten points from slytherin for being up after curfew. Tom doesn’t take him seriously at all!!! dude doesn’t CAREE. He has more important things to do like gossip with abraxas malfoy and smoke with alphard black.

harry finally thwarting tom from killing myrtle and tom’s just like: ‘phew, atleast dumbledore wouldn’t have a legitimate reason to expel me’ and moves on.

and Harry’s just relieved, but SO SO irritated that tom doesn’t gaf about him, so he kinda starts to not care about him at all and talks to hagrid or something, and then when he least expects it,

the basilisk ends up fucking killing him.

i’m rereading ootp (to my own horror) and like. knowing what happens in that one and the next two books makes that intense, bubbling frustration of being a teenager whose worries are disregarded so much worse.

like, surprise?? the kid whose childhood you’re trying to preserve lost that innate innocence years ago. you want him to be a normal 15 yr old boy but if you keep quiet about the dangers he might not live to see his 16th birthday. and congrats on keeping him safe, i guess—you’ve accidentally ruined the last piece able to tether him to his childhood, but i’m sure those months of torture were worth the farce of normality you craved for him. i don’t think you know that your apologies are like sticking band aids on a fracture. i don’t think you’re aware of how you’re ignoring the breaks, but i’m certain you’re expecting them to heal on their own.

oh, they didn’t? and now you’re treating him like he’s a bubble made of glass, waiting to shatter? but you’re the one to have turned him into that bubble, aren’t you? you’re the one who’s holding him, and it’s not his time yet. not for another two years. and shards of glass dulled with time cannot fell a monster, can they? so please be careful. you still need him. he never asked to be a martyr but he’ll do it because you expect him to; you just need to watch your step because your hands are slicked with guilt, and he’s heavy. he’s struggling. he’ll fall as well, if you let him go now.
